Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. 9. Reason for selecting area of research
The Researcher has been living in the community of Claremont Drive, St. Catherine for the
past 10 years. During this time it has been observed that Juvenile Delinquency is a major issue
in the community. As such the researcher has decided to conduct an investigation to find out
the causes of Juvenile Delinquency in the community, how it affects the residents and what
measures can be taken to solve, prevent or reduce this problem.
10. Method of Investigation
In order to collect data from the survey the researcher has decided to use printed questionnaires
along with letters and assistance from the internet and books.
The questionnaire has a tool/instrument for collecting data as numerous advantages such as:

11. Produces used to collect data
As stated earlier, Claremont Drive has approximately 200 households. It was calculated that a
sample of 15% was necessary in order to ensure accurate conclusions on the number of juvenile
delinquency in the area. (15% of 200 = 30)
A total of 40 questionnaires were prepared for distribution to the residents. It was expected that
at least 30 of these will be returned.
The Research therefore decided to choose the households by a process of random selection
which will crater for all the requirements mention above. The numbers of all houses in the
community was written, each on a slip of paper. Each slip of paper was folded and placed into a
box. The box was closed and shaken vigorously to ensure a thorough mixture of the numbers. A
total of 40 slips were then drawn from the box, one at a time, while shaking the box in the
process.
The thirty households thus selected were then supplied with questionnaires. In instances where
members were not at home, the questionnaires were left in the mailbox at 46A Claremont Drive,
Old Harbour.

A total of 40 questionnaires were distributed to the residents, out of which 30 were returned. Of
these respondents 50% were male and 50% were female.

Figure 1 shows how long respondents were residing in Old Harbour. It can be seen that 50%
were living in the area for over 10 years, (30%) between 6 to 10 years, (15%) between 2 to 5
years and (5%) under 1 year.

It was agreed by 100% of the residents on what are some of the causes of juvenile becoming
delinquents. Figure 2 shows the percentage on what are some of the causes of juvenile becoming
delinquents in Claremont Drive. It can be seen that the major cause is Dysfunctional families
(50%), psychological problems (30%), low self-esteem (15%) and others (5%).

Figure 3 indicates how juvenile delinquency affects the residents of Claremont Drive. It can be
seen that use of obscene languages (50%), stealing about (25%), defacing of properties (20%)
and disturbance of space approximately (5%).

Figure 4 shows what measures can be taken to reduce juvenile delinquency? Educate juveniles
on building self-esteems (60%), provide community based activities (20%), Recreational

16. Fig. 5 what have the residents of Claremont Drive done to reduce juvenile delinquency in the
community?
There was a 100% response from the residents what has the residents of Claremont Drive done to
reduce juvenile delinquency in the community. Figure 5 shows the percentage on what have the
residents of Claremont Drive done to reduce juvenile delinquency in the community. It can be
seen that the most suitable and recommend solution is Calling authority personnel (60%),
Scolding (20%), Beating (15%) and Counseling and prayer fasting (5%).

17. Interpretation of data
There was consentient between the residents of Claremont Drive, Old Harbour about causes that
contribute to juvenile delinquency. These left residents with a number of substitutes about what
are the causes of juvenile delinquency and how the residents can reduce juvenile delinquency in
the community. The cause of juvenile delinquency and other question was shown to the resident
via questionnaire in which 50% of the residents said dysfunctional families, 30% said
psychological problems, 15% said low self-esteem and 5% said others. 50% of residents said
dysfunctional families because in a family were they are conflicts, misbehavior and often child
neglect or abuses on the part of individual parents occur continually and regularly, leading other
members to accommodate such actions. 30% said psychological problems because psychological
problems that can contribute to impulsive, acting-out behaviors include certain mental illnesses,
which have been directly correlated with criminal activities.15%, said low self-esteem because
low self-esteem had poorer mental and physical health, worse economic prospects which can
result to conflict easily. And 5% said others.
Fig 3 indicates how juvenile delinquency affects the residents of Claremont Drive. 50% of the
residents said use of obscene languages because it gives the community a bad brand, 25% said
stealing because residents complained about missing items that has been stolen from their’
homes, 20% said defacing of properties because defacing residents properties is consider as
offensive and disrespectful to residents properties and 5% said disturbance of space because it is
ill-mannered and disrespectful to invaded residents privacy.
Fig 4 shows what measures can be taken to reduce juvenile delinquency 60% of the residents
said Educate juveniles on building self-esteems because teaching juveniles on building and
managing self-esteems will help them to become less indignant, 20% said provide community
based activities because it keeps the juvenile preoccupied and out of trouble, 17% said
Recreational activities because recreational activities allow juveniles to connect and socialize
with other adults and children in the community and 3% said provide counseling for juveniles
because counseling help the delinquent use their existing problem-solving skills more
effectively or to develop new or better coping skills.
Fig 5 shows what have the residents of Claremont Drive have done to reduce juvenile
delinquency in the community. 60% of the residents said Calling authority personnel because the
authority personnel have more prerogative to improve a delinquent, 20% said Scolding because
scolding is an act of offensive language which can play upon the juvenile mentally; in other
words it might hurt their feelings, 15% said Flogging because flogging is the act of punishment
which if delinquent did something inappropriate and got scolding they will remember and tends
not repeat the behavior once more and 5% said Counseling and prayer fasting because the
juvenile delinquent tends not to care about counseling and prayer fasting.
18. Findings
1. The major cause of juvenile becoming delinquency in the community of Claremont Drive
is dysfunctional families.
2. The major effect of juvenile delinquency in the community of Claremont Drive is the use
of obscene languages.
3. The most recommended solution in the community of Claremont Drive to solve juvenile
delinquency is educating juveniles on building self-esteems.
19. Recommendations and Implementation
In the community of Claremont Drive the researcher recommends that seeing that the community
is poor community, persons are to ensure that they have jobs in order to support their children
financially so that they won’t have to become a delinquent. If the child is old enough and cannot
function in then it is recommend that they learn a trade in order to make life easier for their
family.
The major effect of juvenile delinquency in the of community of Claremont Drive is use of
obscene languages. The researcher recommends that this parents or guardians are to ensure that
their children are practicing going church and devoting their life to God. And becoming a truth
Christians.
The best solution for juvenile delinquency in the community of Claremont Drive is educating
juveniles on building self-esteems. The researcher suggests that this is indeed an effective
method of solving the problem.
