Acknowledgement
With sincere gratitude and appreciation, I firstly want to thank my teacher, for her guidance
through the process of completing my School Based Assessment. Her enthusiasm for the
subject kept me engaged with my research.
I also want to thank my mother for her continued support and encouragement.
Statement of the Problem
What are the causes of truancy among students attending online classes at a high school in St.
James?
Reason for Research
The reason for selecting this area of research is because the researcher observed that in
classes students are breaching virtual class protocols and are displaying ttruant behaviour.
The researcher is curious as to why students are frequently flaunting online rules. The
researcher will be conducting a survey to gather data related to this topic.
Method of Investigation
The researcher chose an online questionnaire as the method of investigation. A questionnaire
is a research instrument consisting of a series of question for the purpose of gathering
information from respondents.
It is also a simple method collecting of data information from large number of people to
relatively to analyze.
1. It is a simple method of collecting information from a large number of people
relatively easy.
2. Internet connectivity can delay the return of form use

Procedures Used to Collect Data
A questionnaire was used online via Survey Monkey as the data collection. It had a total of
twelve multiple choice questions. It was calculated that about 1.5% percent of the school
population of about 13,000 students received the instrument. The instrument was sent to a
total of twenty students, ten boys and ten girls. The instrument was sent to students from all
age groups. The data collection period was a day, November 10, 2020. The instruments were
distributed and collected by the researcher via the internet.

ATTENDING ONLINE CLASS?
Series 1
Analysis and Interpretation of Data
The researcher has observed that there has been a significant trend with truant behaviour on
online classes in an effort to assess the topic “What are the causes of truancy among students
attending online classes at a high school in St. James?” questionnaires were distributed to
students as a means of collecting data. From the data collected 50% were males and 50%
were females.
The research revealed that in figure 1, most of the respondents (75%) attended online classes
while 25% of the respondents did not attend classes. This shows that majority of the
respondents do attend online classes. Figure 2. Illustrates that, (50%) students display non
participation while being on online classes, (25%) respondents said students were being
disruptive and another (25%) said students displayd disrespectful behavior to the educator.
This is pointing out that majority of the students who attend classes do not participate. The
graph also outlined that (49%) said the cause for them displaying such truant behavior is
because of no supervision at home, (43%) said that they are bored and a small amount (8%)
said they are having learning challenges. It pose the question that, who should supervised
them at home? Those who are online needs to be supervised and because of parents having to
go to work, students will need to be self disciplined in order to attend their classes. In figure
4, (65%) respondents said that because of no internet access students are unable to attend
classes, (25%) respondents chose no access to devices and (10%) respondents chose no
regards for education.
Findings
The researcher found out that:
 Most of the students attend online classes which accounts for 75%.
 The main reason for students displaying truant behaviour on online learning is
because of the lack of supervision, which accounts for 49%.
 The main reason for students not being able to attend online classes is because they
have to access to the internet, which accounts for 65% respondents.
Recommendations and Implementations
After careful analysis of the data collected, the researcher is now making the following
recommendation to reduce causes of students displaying truant behaviour on online classes.
 Parents can ask the educator to be apart of the virtual classroom environment.
Implementation: Different parents could join the class at different times. If students are
displaying truant behaviour a parent can remind them that they are a parent here and that they
should conduct themselves in a good manner.
