Anglo-Saxon Poems The Seafarer And The Wife s Lament
Anglo Saxon poems revolved around the threat of exile. The writings reflected the fear that many
faced when exile threatened them. The Seafarer, The Wanderer, and The Wife s Lament, each have a
source of Anglo Saxon anxiety of exile. This shows up in their writings and their emotions. Anglo
Saxon concepts of exile include the loss of a remembered home, it could be forced upon or chosen,
and it can be used as a punishment; because Anglo Saxons believe in kinsmanship. Along with the
belief of kinsmanship came the belief that one should be physically and mentally strong. Anglo
Saxons feared to be exiled and this was shown within many Anglo Saxon poems. This was seen as a
punishment. After exile a Anglo Saxon would feel lonely and lost. ... Show more content on

He is forced into exile which is another thing that many Anglo Saxons would fear. He remembers the
loss of his loved ones and his old village. He feels lost and wishes he could go back home. He knows
that he has no one to talk to. At the end of this poem the Wanderer talks about how sad he is and how
thinks about the slaughter of his loved ones everyday. He is upset that he knows he has to keep his
thoughts to himself because of the death of his loved one. This reflects the Anglo Saxon fear of exile
because it shows how they would feel if they became exiled for any

College Experience In College
After high school ends, most young people take the track to college. The college experience can be
both exciting yet scary. There are so many new adjustments to make and there s a whole lot more
responsibility on your shoulders as an adult. However, there s no need to stress out about the process.
As you begin your collegiate career, it s best to remember a few key tips to be successful. Implement
these tips as soon as you possibly can and they will serve you well in your college years.
1. Maintain an income stream.
Many people will discourage you from working during your first semester in college. The intentions
are well meaning. They don t want you to struggle with juggling work and school at the same time.
However, college is your first opportunity into the real world. In the real world, adults have to take
care of themselves. If you have a car, you re going to need to purchase gas. If you ever want to fly
home for the holiday breaks, you re going to need to purchase a plane ticket. You ll also need toiletries
and necessities for daily living. In this case, it s wise to maintain a simple part time job or side hustle.
Whether the side hustle involves babysitting once or twice a week, freelance writing gigs or working
in the cafeteria at school, make sure you have a way to earn a bit of money on a consistent basis.
2. Develop a morning ritual.
The morning is the the time when you have the most control. As the day goes on, things happen and
your schedule gets crowded.

Simulation Strategies For Reducing Recidivism Risk
Taxman, F. S., Pattavina, A. (2013). Simulation Strategies to Reduce Recidivism Risk Need
Responsivity (RNR) Modeling for the Criminal Justice System. New York, NY: Springer New York.
Currently, there is little use of evidence based programs or best practice within correctional settings.
There is some consensus that offenders programs do not produce expected outcomes. Valid risk and
assessment tools should be used, being able to identify is an offender is open to altering their behavior.
Using cognitive programs, and use quality programming and focus on recidivism programs. This work
seeks to expand the idea that offender needs be identified and program placement should mirror needs.

Criminology Public Policy, 13(4), 503 533. doi:10.1111/1745 9133.12097
Reflected in this work is a step by step recommendation to end the issues that have created mass
incarceration in the United States. It reviews and suggests that many laws and practices were passed
that have not served humanity well. These works ask for fair and effective sentencing and the repeal of
three strikes and mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Studies suggest that many offenders after the
age of thirty five are less likely to commit crimes. Therefore, age should be a factor in release
programs based on offenders age. This paper is important because it provides a background to
practices that have resulted in the United States mass imprisonment of its citizens
Vollaard, B. (2013), Preventing crime through selective incapacitation*. The Economic Journal, 123:

This research suggests that crime can be prevented through selective incapacitation. This paper
supports mandatory sentencing as a method to reduce crime and prevent future crime. Increasing
incarceration lengths by harsh sentences especially for habitual offenders has been known to lessen the
return to prison. Repeat offenders are presumed to be more likely to commit a future crime. High cost
with the little outcome, since crime would naturally decrease when an offender matures. Incarcerating

The Catholic Social Teaching Principles are a tool to...
The Catholic Social Teaching Principles are a tool to achieve the common good. In the past and in
today s world the common good is short of being what is good for the whole world and has become
what is good for a single society. The Cherokee Indians face the common good of the United States
culture being forced on to them. Due to this they have lost what their culture was about, along with
hundreds of lives. We can see how the Catholic Social Teaching Principles a line with their past ways,
and how their institutes and society have changed over time in the modern society, while adapting a
new meaning to these principles.
The first Catholic principle to be discussed is, Life and Dignity of the Human Person. This simply

Many of the speakers made it clear that children that had parents in the boarding schools were terribly
abused. These children turn into adults and did not know how to display love, and have anger issues.
This in turn is taken out on their kids and then their kids making a chain of abuse within the
generations. Not knowing how to deal with the abuse, and how to let go the abused turn to alcohol or
drugs to deal with the emotion and trauma that come from it, and become addicted.
Alcohol and drugs are also the number one way to cope for the Cherokee who have grown up with no
identity too. They know their name but not who they are. They belong to a culture that is being torn
down, and being forced into the United States culture. For a while it was even shameful to be a
Cherokee and some generations could not eve tell others who they were in fear for their own and their
family s safety.
The health care institutes on the reserve reach out and help the Eastern Band of Cherokee s deal with
their identity loss, their trauma, to help them cope, heal, remember and forgive. To make sure that the
treatment is convenient for everyone they have a rehab center, and hospital right on the reserve. So
that the individuals that need help can receive it and continue to contribute to and be a part of the

Stereotypes In Favor Of School Uniforms
School uniforms are a topic that has been talked about a lot, and many people have mixed emotions
about them. I believe that school uniforms should not be expected in schools, and that students should
have the freedom to wear what they want.
Children come to school to learn, and making them wear uniforms, may not make school enjoyable to
them. Some kids might not pay attention in class, because school has become boring and useless to
them, and their grades will go down as a result.
We have the right to express ourselves, and during school, clothing is really the way you can. Some
people believe that school uniforms are a good option, because it lowers the risk of bullying, but not

Analysis Of The Film Snowpiercer
The plot in the film Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon Ho, follows lead actor Chris Evans, who
stated in reference to the film, I absolutely think it should be seen on a big screen. But I read
something where someone from RADiUS that said, A screen is a screen is a screen (Daniels). This
quote is significant because it relates to the current expansion of entertainment delivery systems in the
world. Nonetheless, Snowpiercer is a film that was directed for the cinema screen. When it was
released in 2013, the film made approximately eighty seven billion dollars internationally, and it was
considered one of the first films of the year in the competition for an Oscar (Pomerantz). Furthermore,
this film was produced by SnowPiercer, Moho Film, Opus Pictures, Stillking Films, and CJ
Entertainment ( Snowpiercer ). In terms of the story, the setting of Snowpiercer is 2031where the
entire earth is frozen except for a train and its survivors. The train is divided into a class system where
the poor are at the back of the train, and the wealthy are at the front. With this to say, the poor are
treated appallingly, forced to live in cramped and dirty spaces, and are given scarce supplies of food.
Thus, the story follows Curtis, led by actor Chris Evans, as he devises a revolt from the back of the
train to fight through the enemies guarding the front (Snowpiercer). Snowpiercer is a diverse film
adaptation that uses vivid imagery and a compelling narrative to exemplify the spectacle,

Juan Rulfo s Pedro Paramo
The main universal theme of Pedro Paramo is that death is inevitable. This is shown by the fact that
everyone is dead in Comala. The author of Pedro Paramo is Juan Rulfo, he was born in Sayula,
Mexico. His book collections such as The Burning Plain (1953) and the book Pedro Paramo made him
a big literary figure. In Pedro Paramo, Juan is sent on a journey to find his father (Pedro which who
the book is written after) who sent his mom away because she kept asking continually to see her sister.
Juan gets to Comala where he meets Abundio (the Mule driver) who sends him to Dorotea. Juan ends
up dying of fear from the voices and shadows and dead people. Juan Rulfo, author of Pedro Paramo,

with echoes it s like they were trapped behind the walls, or beneath the cobble stones when you walk
you feel like someone s behind you, stepping in your footsteps. You hear rustlings. And people
laughing. Laughter that sounds used up. And voices worn away by the years Sound like that. But I
think the day will come when those sounds fade away (Rulfo 41). This quote supports the tone by
offering that one day it might Fade away Damiana Cisneros assumes that this will happen through
time. In this scene Damiana takes Juan to tell him that Comala is filled with voices and when one time
she heard a fiesta and it was no one there and how her sister Sistina Begs for her to pray for her. The
following quote uses the symbol voices to express a gloomy tone. Because he feared the nights that
filled the darkness with phantoms that locked him in with his ghosts. That was his fear (Rulfo
124).This quote supports the tone by showing that Pedro is not expecting to be around a bunch of
ghosts for a night (voices). In this part of the book Pedro is killed by his own son Abundio the mule

The Importance Of Alcoholism In Beowulf
Alcohol has been observed in countless works of literature throughout history. It has been seen a tool
of an assailant, the preferred drink of unsavory character, or maybe even a symbol of peace. The
versatile concoction has taken many forms, and at times it seems to be specifically praised and at other
moments it is just a convenient transition to the next viable part of the narrative. Yet there are some
narratives that expose alcohol as an important part of their ceremonies and rituals without calling
undue notice to this feature. While glory, fame, and reputation are significant elements to the overall
foundation of the Warrior society that is explored within Beowulf, there are other less obvious
elements that hold crucial substance as well. The ceremonies such as the feasts, the passing of the beer
horn, and gift presentations are saturated with ritual demands that must be observed. This analysis will
take a deeper look at the significance of beer drinking that is exposed as a crucial element to the ritual
completion during two different moments with the text. The first will be the Feast after Beowulf s
arrival at King Hrothgar s court and the second will be during the feast as which Freawaru is observed
distributing drink and gifts. Could the drink be used as a formality of displaying alliance and safe
boarding or could it be a be a way to temper reactions during more emotionally charged moments?

Improving the Situation of the Black Underclass
The history of America is one that can t be discussed without talking about the Negro. Whether we
want to admit it or not, the Negro has played an integral part in making what America what it is today.
If it wasn t for the profits generated from slavery, there would have been no way that America would
have been the country that it is today. The slavery that the Negro endured has produced some positive
and negatives, but it is the negatives that have been something that the Negro hasn t been able to

black minds in history to create solutions to these problems. Minds such as Crummell, W.E.B Du Bois

Like what was stated before, the slave system created in depressing moral dilemma in the Negro race.
This has, as stated by Alexander Crummell, created a need for a great moral revolution which shall
touch and vivify the inner life of a people, which shall give the dissatisfaction with ignoble motives
and sensual desires, which shall bring to them a resurrection from inferior ideas and lowly ambitions
(p.14). The message that is to be taken away from this statement, if anything else, is the fact that as
stated by Crummell moral elevation should be the highest ambition of our people (p.13). The high
crime rate among the Negro race and the high number of Negros institutionalized in today prisons
attest to the fact that this social evolution within the Negro race is something that is greatly need. The
high rate of pregnancy among young Negro women also attests to this great need. Although one can
understandably make the argument that some of the Negros problems have been caused other outside
forces, does this fact mean that we should ignore this fact or rather wait until those outside force
somehow miraculously change. Firstly, the option of the Negro not doing anything isn t even an
option. Such statements are made by children before the reach the age of adolescence, not by a race
that is past the time of maturity. How came one just not respond to such a dilemma such as

The Role Of Ethics In The Great Gatsby
Ethics and Morals
Morals are the principles on which one s judgments of right and wrong are based. Ethics are principles
of right conduct. These two words are closely related. I think morals and ethics should be followed. In
the book The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald characters display immoral actions. The
characters simply aren t bothered by some of their bad choices with work ethics, marriage, and
common sense. In the book, good work ethics are poorly disregarded. Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he s a
gambler. (Fitzgerald 73) Gatsby tells Nick this at lunch and explains how Wolfsheim is responsible for
the fixing of the 1919 world series. He gambled knowing the outcome would be in his favor, and he
got a lot of money off of cheating. Wolfsheim s act clearly shows how much he cares about work
ethics. Tom brings up the fact that Gatsby was a bootlegger and he infers that s where all his money
came from. I found out what your drug stores were. He and this Wolfshiem bought up a lot of side

Neuron Synthesis
The papers Integrating the molecular and cellular basis of odor coding in the Drosophila antenna and
The receptors and coding logic for bitter taste try to understand how sensory neurons interacting with
chemicals produce the sensation of smell or taste in the brain. With chemosensation, a chemical
molecule binds to a receptor neuron, where transduction occurs. An action potential can be generated
which can travel along interneurons until it reaches the brain, which can process the information and
perceive a specific smell or taste. While all the steps from reception to perception are important, both
papers focus on receptor neurons and their role in chemosensation. Integrating the molecular and
cellular basis of odor coding in the Drosophila antenna looks at mapping the olfactory system using
Drosophila as a model organism. Or genes encode olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) which map to a
neuron class. The neuron projects to a specific glomerulus, and the signal eventually gets to the brain.
This paper demonstrates three methods of mapping a receptor to a neuron and odor and uses them to
show that Or22a receptor maps to the ab3A neuron and that Or47a receptor maps to the ab5B neuron.

systems that axonal pathfinding of ORNs to glomeruli occur at different life cycle stages and that the

The Multistore Model of Memory Essay
The Multistore Model of Memory The multistore model is a representation of memory based on
having more than one different kind of store for remembered information. Atkinson and Shiffrin
(1968) proposed this model based on evidence related to the separate stores of memory (e.g. serial
position: primacy recency, forgetting etc.). It suggests that memory comprises of three separate stores,
the sensory memory store, the short term memory and the long term memory, each store having a
specific and relatively inflexible function:
Information enters and is initially stored in SM which holds information for very brief periods of time
if the information is not concentrated on. However, if a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later, he frequently asked about his uncle and, on each occasion, reacted again with the level of grief
appropriate to hearing the news for the first time. KF, a motorcycle accident victim investigated by
Shallice and Warrington (1970), suffered from the reverse of this memory impairment. He had no
difficulty in transferring new items into LTM but had a grossly impaired digit span. Cases such as
these lend support to the Atkinson and Shiffrin model, in that they seem to point to a clear distinction
between LTM and STM. There does seem to be fairly strong support for a difference between LTM
and STM in terms of duration, capacity and effects of brain damage. However, there are problems
with the model of Atkinson and Shiffrin. The model is too simple and inflexible and fails to take
account of factors such as the strategies people employ to remember things. It also places emphasis on
the amount of information that can be processed rather than its nature. Some things are simply easier
to remember than others, perhaps because they are more interesting, more distinctive, funnier, or
whatever. The multistore model cannot account for this. Furthermore, alternative explanations can
account for the empirical findings e.g. the levels of processing model. This model was put forward by
Craik and
Lockhart (1972). According to them, processing varies in terms of depth, Trace

to abuse by bodybuilders, weightlifters, and athletes in other sports. Abuse of anabolic steroids can
cause acne, breast development in men, heart attacks, and liver cancer. Most side effects are reversible
if the abuser stops taking the drugs, but some are permanent, such as voice deepening in females.
Possible health consequences for men are infertility, shrinking of the testicles, and male pattern

Relationship Between Ownership And A Sense Of Self
Anywhere in the world, someone acquires something, whether it be money, a car, or even an idea. We
can own many intangible and tangible items in life, but how does ownership relate to a sense and
development of self? This question has been constantly answered for centuries through intelligent
people like Plato, Aristotle, and Jean Paul Sartre. However, the question has received no agreeable
answer. In the end, people will agree that there is a strong and positive relationship between ownership
and a sense of self because the things you own will define and develop who you are positively by
exhibiting what you like, what you can and cannot do, and in the end, characterizes you, as long as
you use the things you own properly. Jean Paul Sartre argues that intangible items such as skill and
knowledge is something that we own and defines who we are, since acquiring skill and knowledge
makes us better in different aspects of life. He also argues the tangible aspects of life that we own also
defines us. By saying this, Sartre is agreeing that when we own something such as knowledge, it will
shape our sense of self and identity since it makes us a better person when we use our own knowledge
to benefit our own selves and others, thus showing a strong and positive relationship between
ownership and sense of self and identity. Aristotle would also agree with both Jean Paul Sartre and the
statement that the relationship between ownership and sense of self is strong and positive

are so similar in appearance and content, but their intentions and purposes differ dramatically. These
two paintings, both relating to the virgin and the child, are the Master of the Straus Madonna s Virgin
and Child (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), dated c. 1395 1400, and created much later, Antoniazzo
Romano s Virgin and Child with Donor (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), dated c. 1430 1512. Within
a hundred years, these two artists, as well as many others, developed pieces of grandeur that have been
the subject of speculation and analyzation to this day. Why? Because of their nuances that make them
traditional in their own isolated ways. Whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Straus Virgin and Child portrays a woman gazing at the child in her arms as if she is not actually
holding him. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, there is an extreme level of reverence being
related to the child from the virgin, who seems to have almost no personal relationship with the baby.
In turn, the baby seems to be holding a dove in his hand in such a way that causes him to appear in
perfect control of himself complete awareness of his own actions, despite his evident age. In the times
of the middle ages, it was difficult to view Jesus as a close and personal being because of the current
religious system that was in effect. Religion often acted as a method of conviction and manipulation,
therefore, depicting Mary as the virgin with baby Jesus as the child in a loving embrace was unheard
of. Having a personal and loving relationship with Christ had not yet become accessible. Romano s
Virgin and Child with Donor, on the other hand, was completely different. The virgin is seen lovingly
caressing her child with a gentle touch as the child clings to her in kind. The baby is held upright by
the mother, being more realistic to the apparent age, and seems at perfect peace as he presents the
dove in his hand like a toddler might present a toy. With the coming Renaissance era, as well as the
uprising of the Protestant Reformation, a relationship with Christ became

The Consequences Of Waste In Henry Thoreau s Food Waste
Every year the planet loses 30 percent of its food, which is an astonishing 1.4 billion tons. This issue
is faced by every developing and developed countries in the world. Food waste continues to grow at a
rapid pace as population increases. The numerous causes of food waste occur at the stages of
production, processing and retailing. Food waste is a highly critical issue that affects the world and
many should understand the consequences this issue has on the environment. In Henry Thoreau s
Where I Lived and What I lived For essay, depicts that living small is the key to happiness. He became
close to nature and valued it. He emphasizes that one can change their lives and awaken to the earnest
possibilities of everyday life if they become nature. One of the main ideas in the essay is that having
an excessive amount of things does not make one happy. This can be applied to food, many purchase
more than they can consume. Thoreau wants readers to value nature and understand how our actions
will affect us in the future. This links to food waste because more land is needed to produce food;
which consequents in forests that are killed, to produce larger amounts of food that will be wasted.
One of the country s that produces the most food and wastes the most food is the United States. A
major reason is because food is cheaper in the United States than anywhere else in the world. Fruits
and vegetables have the highest wastage rates of any food. The obsession with the

Essay on Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence At a time when computer technology is advancing at a rapid pace and when
software developers are convincingly hawking their products as having artificial intelligence, the
inevitable question has begun to take on a certain urgency: Can a computer think? Really think? In
one form or another this is actually a very old question, dating back to such philosophers as Plato,
Aristotle, and Descartes. And after nearly 3,000 years the most honest answer is still uncertain. After
all, what does it mean to think? On the other hand, that is not a very satisfying answer. However, with

All the questions the human asks are responded to appropriately, such that the Chinese speaker is
convinced that he or she is talking to another Chinese speaker. The conclusion proponents of strong AI
would like to draw is that the computer understands Chinese, just as the person does. Yet, Searle asks
us to suppose that he is sitting inside the computer. In other words, he is in a small room in which he
receives Chinese symbols, looks them up on look up table, and returns the Chinese symbols that are
indicated by the table. Searle notes, of course, that he does not understand a word of Chinese.
Furthermore, his lack of understanding goes to show, he argues, that computers do not understand
Chinese neither, because they are in the same situation as he is. They are mindless manipulators of
symbols, just as he is and they do not understand what they are saying, just as he doesn t. Searle s
Chinese Room Argument seems to be logical initially. Yet, in a view of a system, it is clear that though
Searle himself does not understand Chinese in the thought experiment, it is perfectly correct to say
that Searle plus look up table understand Chinese. In other words, the entire computer would
understand Chinese, though perhaps the central processor or any other part might not. It is the entire
system that matters

Gary Soto Accomplishments

Period 2
Gary Soto
Gary Soto was an amazing poet. He was quite famous and had many achievements throughout his
current life. His poems are easy to understand and literal. The poems are usually about events that
have happened to him. Soto is definitely a great poet whose style of writing is unique.
Gary Soto was born on April 12, 1952. He was raised in Fresno, California. Married to Carolyn Oda,
he s now 63 years old. Gary had a tough childhood. His father died when he was five years old. Soto
received very little motivation from his family. As a result of this, he did poorly in school. But, during
high school he found an interest in poetry. Soto received the 1993 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Film
Excellence when he produced the film The Pool Party . He also attended Fresno City College, and
California State University. There, he earned his B.A degree in English. At the University of
California, Irvine, Soto did graduate work in poetry. He was also the first Mexican American to earn
an M.F.A. in 1976. Gary Soto had a hard childhood but made it up through his achievements in
writing and school. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His poetry focuses on past or daily experiences throughout his life. One of his poems mentioned him
when he was twelve years old. Another mentioned his dream of moving away from home. His topics
seem random, in the sense that there is no clear connection between the poems. The only thing that
connects the poems is that Soto had experienced the topic of the poem. Another thing these poems
have in common is the fact that most of them are relatable. Overall, Gary Soto s poetry was interesting

o The most obvious function, governments rely on bond markets to fund the gap between spending
and revenues. o Bond yields are essential elements in the pricing of other long term assets, ranging
from equities and real estate, to gold and foreign exchange rates. For instance, most ways of assessing
fair value of the stock market require some long term interest rate, either to discount to the present a
flow of corporate dividends or to compare to a given price earnings ratio. o Long term interest rates
are the basis for the cost of borrowing to both firms and households. It is the price of leverage. They
determine how much households need to pay on their fixed rate mortgages and importantly, corporate
treasurers use them to assess the value to shareholders of expected flows of revenue on real
investment projects. o Long term sovereign bonds are the core investment for long horizoned
investors, such as pension funds and insurance companies. o Futures and options based on long term
sovereign bonds are widely used to hedge other long term bonds. For all these reasons, if the long
term bond yield is in some sense off, if there are questions about their valuations, then lots of other
valuations will also be off, and lots of financial, business and households decisions will also be off.
My theme tonight is that understanding the developments in bond markets can help us to think about
the global economy, where we are going and where we should

Comparison Of Judges And Genesis
Each member of the human race is a unique individual; no two people are exactly alike. There may be
similarities among various people but with those similarities there will be at least one characteristic
that separates one from another. Although there is not one distinct difference that may be used to
distinguish one person from another, there is one universal similarity which all of humanity shares. All
people are united in that they are made in the image of God. This trait which bonds all people is given
by God to all, even those who do not believe in the Lord. Therefore, being human means one has been
created in God s image. In order to discuss how all people are made in God s image, it must first be

judge (Judges 2:18). The judge was God s mouthpiece in which He spoke to His people and gave them
the orders by which they could regain His helping hand and be released from the clutches of their
enemies. His guidance is needed by the Israelites, and once a judge dies, they lose sight of the one and
only God and return to apostasy. Their repeated use of idolatry shows humanity s rejection of their
proper vocation of being made in God s image. They favor the works of human hands as opposed to
the works of His hands, and through these actions are going against God and His image. The people

Musee des Beaux Arts by W. H. Auden starts his poem by honoring painters who painted about
suffering and society s arrogance to the nature of suffering. People focus only on their lives and
children continue to play, all unconcerned with the suffering of others around them. Auden brings the
painting of Icarus to show the indifference of humanity to individual suffering. The central point is to

In J.R.R Tolkien s Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the character of Gollum has quickly proven to be the
single most important character to the plot. This is due partly to his role in the destruction of the One

disgusting and repulsive creature who had entered the story later than most other characters, embodies
the strongest allegory in the entire trilogy. Gollum is an allegory for the depravity of Man because he

Literary Analysis Of Maya Deren s Meshes Of The Afternoon
Maya Deren s Meshes of the Afternoon, (1943) is a 14 minute black and white 16mm film that
captures simple realities like walking around one s house, cutting bread, etc, and turning that narrative
into a warped and surrealistic reality that is eerie and chilling, but ultimately there is still familiarity in
it s truth and sensibility. In addition to it being cinematically masterful, Deren s approach in the
choices she made were remarkable and iconic in terms of editing because of the time period s limited
technological advances. Not only were the choices relating to the piece s aesthetics ambitious and
experimental, actually being able to act on those artistic impulses or inquires was a conscious

In hanging it up, she wants to come out of this dream that is slowly beginning to develop into a
dissociative nightmare. With the knife, I enjoy its image alone without any symbolic attachment to
them because I find knives to be aesthetically lovely on behalf of their elegance in how they shine, but
there is also the inherent phallicism and violence that is attached to it s image as well. Through this
symbol, Deren expresses the frustration she faces with herself and identity, in that she isn t being seen,
understood, or respected, in the way she wants to be through the perspective of men whether that is
through her personal wedded life, or through her professional life in a male dominated field. With
each subtle change different from the last, Deren triggers memory and familiarity and in her repeating
the images, Deren is asking her viewers to pay attention and think deeply about what it is that she is
presenting so many times. The use of repetition aside from its symbolism and iconism, and instead
approaching it through an analytical lens in terms of how they re executed in editing are outstanding
artistic choices as well. Whether it is the key turning into a knife, slow motion running, or her final
shots of her feet walking through several scenic platforms everything about her cuts and aesthetic

The Threat Of The Industrial Control System
NIST SP800 82 section 3.2 contains a table showing Adversarial Threats to ICS. For your discussion
this week, you need to pick two of these and explain it in your own words. You also need to include an
explanation of the potential risks to ICS s due to the threats. This means the impacts, consequences,
and likelihood associated with each threat type. If possible, include an example of the threats. There
are many threats which have the potential to impact industrial control systems. These threats can vary
in type and in the potential risks and impacts to the industrial control system. Understanding the
threats to industrial control systems along with the threats risks, impact, consequences, and likelihood
is essential for proper risk assessment. Preforming risk assessment on industrial control system is
essential for ensuring their security and reducing the risk of attack to a level which is within the
organization risk tolerance for their industrial control systems. One of common threat agent to

Being A Computer Software Engineer Is Best Suitable For Me...
Introduction I have always been in love with technology and it s concepts. Over the years, I have
watched computer videos, phone reviews, etc, and I can get lost on Youtube doing that for hours. Just
recently I built myself a new computer from scratch, by ordering all the parts separately, then one day,
I put it all together. Ever since that day, I feel so accomplished that I was able to do something like
that, and I get compliments from many people all the time. That led to me looking into my future
career, and I found being a Computer Software Engineer is best suitable for me and my lifestyle. It
will allow me to do what I love everyday, and make a comfortable living doing so. Upon looking into
colleges, I chose Ball State as they have been emailing me for awhile now, and doing my research, I
found that Ball State offers a major in Computer Science, which has all the necessary skills to be
successful in my career of choice. I believe that by taking Computer Science at Ball State will prepare
me for the future workforce, and live a comfortable life doing it.
Education Requirements It is expected that most software developers have a bachelor s degree in
computer science ( Education ) of some kind, because it covers a wide variety of topics. Sometimes
employers accept a degree in mathematics ( Education ) if you have one already. Employers look for
people that have a strong set of skills in computer programing ( Education ). At Ball State University,

Strategies Used by American Security
American Security
After the September, 11th terrorists attack, the United States government 9/11 commission
recommended that biometric entry exit screening system was ideal for travelers who were leaving and
entering the United States. They reiterated that this was essential for national security. Border
screening systems were to be consolidated with United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator
Technology (Haddal, 2010). This was supposed to streamline border inspections. Legislations were
instituted that were geared towards enhancing airline security, visa border security, and maritime
security.
The Aviation and Security Act of November 2001, the PATRIOTIC Act, and Border Security and Visa
Entry Reform Act of May 2002 were geared towards enhancing homeland security (Haddal, 2010).
The Homeland Security Act of 2002 merged border and interior enforcement functions of Department
of Agriculture, the INS, and the U.S. Customs service to form Directorate of Border and
Transportation Security within the Department of Homeland Security (Haddal, 2010). Free sharing of
information and resources was made possible between USBP and CBP. The land, rail, and
transportation network became secure save for Transport Security Administration.
Alternative strategies that can be used to enhance border security can be effective collection, use, and
sharing of intelligence by exploiting networked intelligence. This should be done by sharing both

Homecoming Poem
Wilfred Owen s Anthem for Doomed Youth and Bruce Dawe s Homecoming are thematically
connected poems which explore the futility of war and the treatment of deceased combatants. Both
Owen and Dawe served in the military and were controversial condemners in all that they penned on
World War One and the Vietnam War respectively. Despite this, these texts do not explicitly state these
views, but rather evoke the sympathy of the audience utilising subtle poetic techniques including
contrast, flesh imagery and death imagery.
Contrast is one of the most apparent devices within Homecoming and Anthem for Doomed Youth and
is used to create a pervading sense of war s irony. The very title of Dawe s poem, Homecoming , has
the positive connotations of family reunion but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This quotation is heavy with religious imagery of the passage to heaven, impressed upon the reader by
the purposeful placement of commas. Throughout history religion has been misused as justification of
the military institution, and Dawe considers the contradictory nature of these ideologies; one
preaching peace and the other incentivising the indiscriminate killing of one s neighbour. These
shadows, however, do not simply pass over untouched land but the countryside they have scarred;
metaphorically envisioned as steaming chow mein and likened to Australia s knuckled hills and desert
emptiness . The irony of this poem truly peaks when in spite of all his condemnation, Dawe
momentarily admires the mash, the splendour of war, emphasising its eternal allure. Anthem for
Doomed Youth shares this ironic contrast, comparing traditional funeral rites to war. From the opening
stanza the audience is immersed in cacophony of battle, with Owen utilising the alliteration of rifles
rapid rattle to emulate the sound produced by the monstrous anger of guns . Personification is

Hamlet And The Basic Human Need For Truth
Hamlet and the Basic Human Need for Truth Marcus Aurelius is quoted as saying, Everything we hear
is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth. This idea is examined in
William Shakespeare s Hamlet, a play full of warmly delivered lies and completely intentional deceit.
Hamlet himself shows how a life full of lies and deceit breeds a desire for something real. In the
beginning of the play, authenticity is introduced as a rare trait and the Ghost reveals treachery to
Hamlet setting him on a path that leads to his demise. Hamlet s actions are motivated by a search for
something real and true in both his life and himself and in this search he comments on the nature of
truth itself.
Within Shakespeare s Hamlet resides a strong theme of illusion and reality shown in the attention that
is drawn to the seeming and being within the characters. The play itself is about acting because not
only are actors required to act out the parts that are written, but also the characters themselves are
acting. They put on a facade just as an actor assumes a role on the stage (Bloom 11). Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern seem to be concerned friends. Instead, they are simply acting as such because they are
charged by the king to find the origin of Hamlet s peculiar behavior. Gertrude seems to be the dutiful
queen that married Claudius for the benefit of the kingdom itself while she has simply failed to grieve
her husband, dishonored his memory by marring so soon after

reference, Hemingway assists the reader in visualizing Zelda s physical attributes and mental makeup
without directly expressing her appearance or state of mind. Because hawks typically have beady

can picture the gap in Zelda s mind by visualizing the vacancy behind her eyes. After

  • 2. Anglo-Saxon Poems The Seafarer And The Wife s Lament Anglo Saxon poems revolved around the threat of exile. The writings reflected the fear that many faced when exile threatened them. The Seafarer, The Wanderer, and The Wife s Lament, each have a source of Anglo Saxon anxiety of exile. This shows up in their writings and their emotions. Anglo Saxon concepts of exile include the loss of a remembered home, it could be forced upon or chosen, and it can be used as a punishment; because Anglo Saxons believe in kinsmanship. Along with the belief of kinsmanship came the belief that one should be physically and mentally strong. Anglo Saxons feared to be exiled and this was shown within many Anglo Saxon poems. • 3. College Experience In College After high school ends, most young people take the track to college. The college experience can be both exciting yet scary. There are so many new adjustments to make and there s a whole lot more responsibility on your shoulders as an adult. However, there s no need to stress out about the process. As you begin your collegiate career, it s best to remember a few key tips to be successful. Implement these tips as soon as you possibly can and they will serve you well in your college years. 1. Maintain an income stream. Many people will discourage you from working during your first semester in college. The intentions are well meaning. They don t want you to struggle with juggling work and school at the same time. However, college is your first opportunity into the real world. In the real world, adults have to take care of themselves. If you have a car, you re going to need to purchase gas. If you ever want to fly home for the holiday breaks, you re going to need to purchase a plane ticket. You ll also need toiletries and necessities for daily living. In this case, it s wise to maintain a simple part time job or side hustle. Whether the side hustle involves babysitting once or twice a week, freelance writing gigs or working in the cafeteria at school, make sure you have a way to earn a bit of money on a consistent basis. 2. Develop a morning ritual. The morning is the the time when you have the most control. As the day goes on, things happen and your schedule gets crowded. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Criminology Public Policy, 13(4), 503 533. doi:10.1111/1745 9133.12097 Reflected in this work is a step by step recommendation to end the issues that have created mass incarceration in the United States. It reviews and suggests that many laws and practices were passed that have not served humanity well. These works ask for fair and effective sentencing and the repeal of three strikes and mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Studies suggest that many offenders after the age of thirty five are less likely to commit crimes. Therefore, age should be a factor in release programs based on offenders age. This paper is important because it provides a background to practices that have resulted in the United States mass imprisonment of its citizens Vollaard, B. The Economic Journal, 123: 262 284. doi:10.1111/j.1468 0297.2012. 02522.x This research suggests that crime can be prevented through selective incapacitation. This paper supports mandatory sentencing as a method to reduce crime and prevent future crime. Increasing incarceration lengths by harsh sentences especially for habitual offenders has been known to lessen the return to prison. Many of the speakers made it clear that children that had parents in the boarding schools were terribly abused. These children turn into adults and did not know how to display love, and have anger issues. Not knowing how to deal with the abuse, and how to let go the abused turn to alcohol or drugs to deal with the emotion and trauma that come from it, and become addicted. Alcohol and drugs are also the number one way to cope for the Cherokee who have grown up with no identity too. They know their name but not who they are. Analysis Of The Film Snowpiercer The plot in the film Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon Ho, follows lead actor Chris Evans, who stated in reference to the film, I absolutely think it should be seen on a big screen. But I read something where someone from RADiUS that said, A screen is a screen is a screen (Daniels). When it was released in 2013, the film made approximately eighty seven billion dollars internationally, and it was considered one of the first films of the year in the competition for an Oscar (Pomerantz). Furthermore, this film was produced by SnowPiercer, Moho Film, Opus Pictures, Stillking Films, and CJ Entertainment ( Snowpiercer ). In terms of the story, the setting of Snowpiercer is 2031where the entire earth is frozen except for a train and its survivors. The train is divided into a class system where the poor are at the back of the train, and the wealthy are at the front. With this to say, the poor are treated appallingly, forced to live in cramped and dirty spaces, and are given scarce supplies of food. Thus, the story follows Curtis, led by actor Chris Evans, as he devises a revolt from the back of the train to fight through the enemies guarding the front (Snowpiercer). It has been seen a tool of an assailant, the preferred drink of unsavory character, or maybe even a symbol of peace. The versatile concoction has taken many forms, and at times it seems to be specifically praised and at other moments it is just a convenient transition to the next viable part of the narrative. Yet there are some narratives that expose alcohol as an important part of their ceremonies and rituals without calling undue notice to this feature. While glory, fame, and reputation are significant elements to the overall foundation of the Warrior society that is explored within Beowulf, there are other less obvious elements that hold crucial substance as well. The ceremonies such as the feasts, the passing of the beer horn, and gift presentations are saturated with ritual demands that must be observed. This analysis will take a deeper look at the significance of beer drinking that is exposed as a crucial element to the ritual completion during two different moments with the text. The first will be the Feast after Beowulf s arrival at King Hrothgar s court and the second will be during the feast as which Freawaru is observed distributing drink and gifts. • 16. Neuron Synthesis The papers Integrating the molecular and cellular basis of odor coding in the Drosophila antenna and The receptors and coding logic for bitter taste try to understand how sensory neurons interacting with chemicals produce the sensation of smell or taste in the brain. With chemosensation, a chemical molecule binds to a receptor neuron, where transduction occurs. An action potential can be generated which can travel along interneurons until it reaches the brain, which can process the information and perceive a specific smell or taste. While all the steps from reception to perception are important, both papers focus on receptor neurons and their role in chemosensation. Integrating the molecular and cellular basis of odor coding in the Drosophila antenna looks at mapping the olfactory system using Drosophila as a model organism. Or genes encode olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) which map to a neuron class. The neuron projects to a specific glomerulus, and the signal eventually gets to the brain. The Multistore Model of Memory Essay The Multistore Model of Memory The multistore model is a representation of memory based on having more than one different kind of store for remembered information. Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) proposed this model based on evidence related to the separate stores of memory (e.g. serial position: primacy recency, forgetting etc.). It suggests that memory comprises of three separate stores, the sensory memory store, the short term memory and the long term memory, each store having a specific and relatively inflexible function: Information enters and is initially stored in SM which holds information for very brief periods of time if the information is not concentrated on. He had no difficulty in transferring new items into LTM but had a grossly impaired digit span. Cases such as these lend support to the Atkinson and Shiffrin model, in that they seem to point to a clear distinction between LTM and STM. There does seem to be fairly strong support for a difference between LTM and STM in terms of duration, capacity and effects of brain damage. However, there are problems with the model of Atkinson and Shiffrin. The model is too simple and inflexible and fails to take account of factors such as the strategies people employ to remember things. It also places emphasis on the amount of information that can be processed rather than its nature. Some things are simply easier to remember than others, perhaps because they are more interesting, more distinctive, funnier, or whatever. The multistore model cannot account for this. Furthermore, alternative explanations can account for the empirical findings e.g. the levels of processing model. This model was put forward by Craik and Lockhart (1972). • 19. Relationship Between Ownership And A Sense Of Self Anywhere in the world, someone acquires something, whether it be money, a car, or even an idea. We can own many intangible and tangible items in life, but how does ownership relate to a sense and development of self? This question has been constantly answered for centuries through intelligent people like Plato, Aristotle, and Jean Paul Sartre. However, the question has received no agreeable answer. In the end, people will agree that there is a strong and positive relationship between ownership and a sense of self because the things you own will define and develop who you are positively by exhibiting what you like, what you can and cannot do, and in the end, characterizes you, as long as you use the things you own properly. Jean Paul Sartre argues that intangible items such as skill and knowledge is something that we own and defines who we are, since acquiring skill and knowledge makes us better in different aspects of life. He also argues the tangible aspects of life that we own also defines us. By saying this, Sartre is agreeing that when we own something such as knowledge, it will shape our sense of self and identity since it makes us a better person when we use our own knowledge to benefit our own selves and others, thus showing a strong and positive relationship between ownership and sense of self and identity. Although there is not one distinct difference that may be used to distinguish one person from another, there is one universal similarity which all of humanity shares. All people are united in that they are made in the image of God. This trait which bonds all people is given by God to all, even those who do not believe in the Lord. Therefore, being human means one has been created in God s image. In order to discuss how all people are made in God s image, it must first be understood how humanity came to be and ... His guidance is needed by the Israelites, and once a judge dies, they lose sight of the one and only God and return to apostasy. Their repeated use of idolatry shows humanity s rejection of their proper vocation of being made in God s image. This is something that could be changed in a leadership environment. ENTPs tend to have a perverse sense of humor as well, and enjoy playing devil s advocate. This sometimes confuses, even angers, those who don t understand or accept the concept of argument as a sport. ENTPs are basically optimists, but in spite of this (perhaps because of it?), they can become petulant about small setbacks and inconveniences. (Major setbacks they regard as challenges, and tackle with determination.) ENTPs have little patience with those they consider wrongheaded or unintelligent, and show little restraint in demonstrating this. In general, however, they are genial, even charming, when not being harassed by life. People focus only on their lives and children continue to play, all unconcerned with the suffering of others around them. Auden brings the painting of Icarus to show the indifference of humanity to individual suffering. The central point is to show that everyone is caught up in his or her own lives and enjoyment that they ignore the suffering of the world around them. Strategies Used by American Security American Security After the September, 11th terrorists attack, the United States government 9/11 commission recommended that biometric entry exit screening system was ideal for travelers who were leaving and entering the United States. They reiterated that this was essential for national security. Border screening systems were to be consolidated with United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (Haddal, 2010). This was supposed to streamline border inspections. Legislations were instituted that were geared towards enhancing airline security, visa border security, and maritime security. The Aviation and Security Act of November 2001, the PATRIOTIC Act, and Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of May 2002 were geared towards enhancing homeland security (Haddal, 2010). The Homeland Security Act of 2002 merged border and interior enforcement functions of Department of Agriculture, the INS, and the U.S. Customs service to form Directorate of Border and Transportation Security within the Department of Homeland Security (Haddal, 2010). Free sharing of information and resources was made possible between USBP and CBP. The land, rail, and transportation network became secure save for Transport Security Administration. Both Owen and Dawe served in the military and were controversial condemners in all that they penned on World War One and the Vietnam War respectively. Despite this, these texts do not explicitly state these views, but rather evoke the sympathy of the audience utilising subtle poetic techniques including contrast, flesh imagery and death imagery. This quotation is heavy with religious imagery of the passage to heaven, impressed upon the reader by the purposeful placement of commas. These shadows, however, do not simply pass over untouched land but the countryside they have scarred; metaphorically envisioned as steaming chow mein and likened to Australia s knuckled hills and desert emptiness . The irony of this poem truly peaks when in spite of all his condemnation, Dawe momentarily admires the mash, the splendour of war, emphasising its eternal allure. • 39. Hamlet And The Basic Human Need For Truth Hamlet and the Basic Human Need for Truth Marcus Aurelius is quoted as saying, Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth. This idea is examined in William Shakespeare s Hamlet, a play full of warmly delivered lies and completely intentional deceit. Hamlet himself shows how a life full of lies and deceit breeds a desire for something real. In the beginning of the play, authenticity is introduced as a rare trait and the Ghost reveals treachery to Hamlet setting him on a path that leads to his demise. Hamlet s actions are motivated by a search for something real and true in both his life and himself and in this search he comments on the nature of truth itself. Within Shakespeare s Hamlet resides a strong theme of illusion and reality shown in the attention that is drawn to the seeming and being within the characters. The play itself is about acting because not only are actors required to act out the parts that are written, but also the characters themselves are acting. They put on a facade just as an actor assumes a role on the stage (Bloom 11). Rosencrantz and Guildenstern seem to be concerned friends. Instead, they are simply acting as such because they are charged by the king to find the origin of Hamlet s peculiar behavior. Gertrude seems to be the dutiful queen that married Claudius for the benefit of the kingdom itself while she has simply failed to grieve her husband, dishonored his memory by marring so soon after ... • 41. Criticism And Symbolism In Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway My physical science professor showed my class a picture diagram of the three pronged iceberg that sank the Titanic. A fellow peer of mine immediately said, How did that small iceberg sink a huge ship? My professor let the class debate back and forth for awhile before she zoomed out of the diagram to reveal a hulking mass of ice below the surface of the water. She then went on to explain that less than 10 percent of an iceberg rests above the water s surface. Ernest Hemingway models his writing in the form of an iceberg. Hemingway s style of writing, called the Iceberg Theory, divulges the facts essential to understanding the plot without explicitly stating the underlying structure, allowing the reader to sense the story s details. Hemingway demonstrates the Iceberg Theory in his memoir Moveable Feast. In one instance in Moveable Feast, Hemingway uses the Iceberg Theory to reveal a character s disposition through symbolism. This theory prevails in Hemingway s comparison of Scott Fitzgerald s wife Zelda to that of a hawk. Hemingway says, Zelda had hawk s eyes ... (Hemingway 154). In this reference, Hemingway assists the reader in visualizing Zelda s physical attributes and mental makeup without directly expressing her appearance or state of mind.
