Introduction
1983 Charles Hull invents Stereolithography (SLA) Charles
‘Chuck’ Hull was the first to develop a technology for creating
solid objects from a CAD/CAM file,inventing the process he
termed ‘stereolithography’ in 1983.
WHAT IS ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING?
Additive Manufacturing by ASTM (American Society
for Testing and Materials ): “Process of joining
materials to make objects from 3D model data,
usually layer upon layer,
as opposed to subtractive
manufacturing methodologies, such as traditional
machining”
General Principle
Steps involved in Additive Manufacturing:
1) Modeling
2) Printing
3) Finishing
1.) Modeling
 a.) Creation of CAD model using:
 CAD package ( eg. CATIA, SOLID-EDGE), 3D scanner,
camera & photographic software
b.) conversion to .STL format :
 3D models are converted printing software readable format.
2.) Printing
a.) Processing .STL file in slicer
 SLICING model into series of thin layers (depending upon
resolution up to 16µm).
 Produces G-Code file.
b.) Layer by layer construction
3.) Finishing
a.) Removing manufactured part from machine
b.) Removal of extra material such as supports.
c.) Minor cleaning, surface treatment, painting if required.
Advantages Of
Additive Manufacturing
1. Design flexibility.
2. Cost of geometric complexity.
3.Dimensional accuracy.
4.No need of assemblage.
5. Time and cost efficiency in production run.
DISADVANTAGES
 1.Slow build rates
 2.High production costs
 3.Considerable effort required for application design
 4.Discontinuous production process
 5.Limited component size.

Bioprinting
1.Bio printing refers to manufacturing artificial biological organs and
body parts capable of working like original ones.
2.In this process, layers of living cells are deposited onto a gel medium
or sugar matrix and slowly built up to form three dimensional
structures including vascular systems.
3.The first production system for 3D tissue printing was delivered in
2009, based on NovoGen bio-printing technology.
4.In 2013, Chinese scientists began printing ears, livers and kidneys,
 with living tissue.
CONCLUSION
• The process of joining materials to make objects from
three-dimensional (3D) model data, usually layer by
layer
• Traditional subtractive machining techniques rely on
the removal of material by methods such as cutting
or milling
• Manufacturing metal components with virtually no
geometric limitations or tools offers new ways to
increase product performance or establish new
processes and revenue streams

  • 3. Introduction 1983 Charles Hull invents Stereolithography (SLA) Charles ‘Chuck’ Hull was the first to develop a technology for creating solid objects from a CAD/CAM file,inventing the process he termed ‘stereolithography’ in 1983.
  • 4. WHAT IS ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING? Additive Manufacturing by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials ): “Process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies, such as traditional machining”
  • 5. General Principle Steps involved in Additive Manufacturing: 1) Modeling 2) Printing 3) Finishing
  • 6. 1.) Modeling  a.) Creation of CAD model using:  CAD package ( eg. CATIA, SOLID-EDGE), 3D scanner, camera & photographic software b.) conversion to .STL format :  3D models are converted printing software readable format.
  • 7. 2.) Printing a.) Processing .STL file in slicer  SLICING model into series of thin layers (depending upon resolution up to 16µm).  Produces G-Code file. b.) Layer by layer construction
  • 8. 3.) Finishing a.) Removing manufactured part from machine b.) Removal of extra material such as supports. c.) Minor cleaning, surface treatment, painting if required.
  • 9. Advantages Of Additive Manufacturing 1. Design flexibility. 2. Cost of geometric complexity. 3.Dimensional accuracy. 4.No need of assemblage. 5. Time and cost efficiency in production run.

AM - FutureAspects Bioprinting 1.Bio printing refers to manufacturing artificial biological organs and body parts capable of working like original ones. 2.In this process, layers of living cells are deposited onto a gel medium or sugar matrix and slowly built up to form three dimensional structures including vascular systems. 3.The first production system for 3D tissue printing was delivered in 2009, based on NovoGen bio-printing technology. 4.In 2013, Chinese scientists began printing ears, livers and kidneys,  with living tissue.
