Essay On Effects Of Discipline On Children
Spanking has a positive effect on children
For many years parents have been disciplining their children in various ways. Discipline is
required to train a child in doing what is right and staying away from what is wrong and
dangerous. Discipline has always been used in order for the child not to grow up spoiled and
choosy. Giving children what they want always is never a good thing, while teaching them that
they cannot have everything teaches them patience. Discipline is very critical in a child s life
because it is a determining factor on how that child is going to turn out in the future. People will
always relate bad parenting to a child s bad behaviour and good parenting to a good behaviour. So
how must parents discipline in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The researchers also found out in a survey that 30% of parents believed that spanking was not
harmful to their children, 60% believed it harmful to their children, only 10% believed it would
lead to severe problems. These statistics raise a startling flag when you think of the nature of this
form of correction.
Parents should be learned about how their form of discipline affects their child because
punishment does not have a sense of discipline as the only outcome. Sometimes children are less
responsive to a certain form of discipline than others. It cannot be helped that a child is unique and
different from others. The child is also a factor in terms of discipline and punishment it is not solely
dependent on his/her parent and the way they discipline. There are other alternatives to punishing
the children for their bad behavior. Less severe punishment besides spanking. They can take away
their television privileges, computer use, and playing outside with their friends, they could ground
them for the weekend and cancel plans, or they could take the time to sit and talk to their children
about their bad

Essay about Innocent Man by John Grisham
The innocent man is the story of Ron Williamson who was unjustly convicted of murder and spent
twelve years on death row before being exonerated by DNA evidence.
Ron Williamson was born in Ada, a small town in Oklahoma. His future looked bright when he
was young and he was an exceptional athlete who was drafted by the Oakland
Athletics. After an unsuccessful career in the minors Ron Williamson became a drug addict and
an alcoholic whose life steadily got worse. He could not keep any job and he began spending
most of his time in bars, and living with various friends. He soon accumulated a criminal record
that included DUI?s, check fraud, and two rape charges that did not result in conviction. He
became a heavy user of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book starts of with a very brief biography of the victim, Debbie Carter and
takes us to the scene of her murder describing the manner of her brutal rape and death. Following
this first chapter the book follows the attempts of the Ada police department as they try to solve
the murder of Debbie Carter, and also the abduction of Denice Haraway a few years later.
From Grisham?s perspective it seems that the prosecution team was only
concerned about pinning the murder on someone and they really didn?t care who it was.
Interrogators literally forced Williamson to make his dream confession and this was the basis for
the entire prosecution even though the defendant was obviously mentally incompetent The
prosecution team used other unreliable sources of evidence, mainly hair samples, and ?jailhouse
snitches? who received reduced sentences as a reward of testifying against the defendant.
Eventually they manipulated an inexperienced jury into believing their insignificant evidence and
Ron Williamson was sentenced to death. His friend Dennis Fritz was sentenced to life in prison,
mainly for being the only friend Ron had when the murder occurred.
Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot went through a similar process. Even though there is little
evidence to say they did not murder Denice Haraway they have never received

We Are What We Eat Analysis
The importance of food to identity formation is certainly not unique to the immigrant experience.
Whether a part of invisible majority culture or deviant minority culture, food environments
influence our constructions of credos and categories. Generally speaking, eating preferences and
behaviors are part of familial and societal legacies. We may prepare the signature dishes of
deceased relatives to mark holidays or guard the secret ingredients of a family recipe. In other
instances, particular spices may evoke strong emotions or memories in us. Even in disordered eating
behaviors, we tend to reflect social values and constraints.145
In her culinary history of ethnicity in the United States, We Are What We Eat:

Incidentally, food is one of the habits that immigrants in the US often maintain to some degree,
even as many other cultural practices slowly decline. 147 Several factors support this phenomenon,
including food s ability to: provide the immigrants with a daily portion of home, communicate
cultural values and social economies, as well as aid in the process of economic mobility. Food
literature expresses this legacy of migration, reflecting these same beliefs and their consequences.
For this reason, the identity discourse on food and survival resembles the lived experience of early
Arab immigrants.148 Like many other immigrant populations, they formed ethnic enclaves, in
which they continued many of their previous cultural practices, including those that involved food.
As Naff chronicles in her detailed history, Becoming American: The Early Arab Immigrant
Experience, Each settlement was, in fact, a stage on which the memories of village life were
reenacted. 149 Naff goes on to describe the eating habits of these early settlements, which
preserved Syrian foodways as much as possible. She writes: Their preference

Average Systole Level
Results: The results show that my average pulse rate is 65.7 beats per minute. My average systole
level is 140.7 mmHG, and my average Diastole level is 61.2 mmHG.
Discussion: Systole is the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood
from the chambers into the arteries. My partner measured my average systole level to be 117.
They measured it by using a blood pressure cuff, and listening with a stethoscope and the steps
are discussed previously in the procedure. An average systole level of 117 is considered normal
and a healthy level. Diastole is the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and
allows the chambers of the heart to fill with blood. My partner measured my average systole level
to be 61.3.

Essay on Reasons to Stop Fighting Aganist Terrorism
For more than a decade US troops are fighting against terrorism in Middle East especially in
Afghanistan. Soon after the worst terrorist attack in the history of United States occurred on
September 11 2001, War of Terror began. President Bush declared war against terrorist groups like
Al Qaeda and Talibanthat rooted in Afghanistan. The war just did not disturb the families of the
troops, but to all Americans and Afghanis. Every hours tax payers are paying millions of dollars
for the war. Thousands of troops have been injured and died since the war began. Loss of money,
environment, and deaths are the three key factors that makes me believe that Afghanistan war

The vanishing of trees has led to severe droughts in Afghanistan. In past three years the
groundwater level has fallen down by 1.7 4.6m. The drought has severely affected the agriculture.
The less production of food have sky rocketed the price of the groceries. The water supply has
decreased significantly due to the leakage. Kandahar s network that serves 30% of the city six
hour supplies loses 70% of water through leakage (UNEP). As a whole, Afghanistan only uses only
one third of its potential resource. Unproductive practice of water usage leads to the water scarcity
in Afghanistan. Environmental conditions of Afghanistan have made its citizens life miserable.
The credit goes to the Taliban and also the United Statesgovernment. Instead of sending more
troops to fight against Afghanistan, more scientist and researchers should be sent to improve the
environmental conditions. Use of harmful weapons resulted in depletion of the natural habitation
deforestation. US government should stop or at least decrease the use of ammunition. Afghanistan
is very rich in water resources but no appropriate plans have been made to utilize the water
usefully. Therefore United States should help Afghanistan to make and execute the water related
plans. Wars are very costly, its records can be seen in the history; World War II, Vietnam war etc.

Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi Essay
Captivity in Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi, is a strongly emphasized theme. Fideaus
the protagonist is constantly constrained and surveilled within the realms of the Egyptian society
subsequently being emotionally, and twice literally, captive. The significance of captivity in
Woman at Point Zero is not only for plot or dramatic effect. In the writing of WomanAt Point Zero
Nawal El Saadawi wishes to inform the reader about the captivity felt by some women in
suppressive countries. In this way, she means the protagonist Firdaus to not only represent one
woman but many. Captivity in Woman at Point Zero is not only that of the literal, lock and key.
Throughout the novel Firdaus is subject to varying forms of captivity, emotionally... Show more

On describing her captivity in marriage Firdaus also states A virtuous woman was not supposed to
complain about her husband, her duty was perfect obedience. , thus, in order to be good one must
be totally submissive. This description of a virtuous woman shows how ingrained social
expectations were in the society of 1970 s , if one must be perfectly obedient to one other person
at all times, then obviously they are captive in both expectations and duty, a duty that was for
Firdaus, forced upon her. The captivity is not physical, but rather mental and inflicted onto Firdaus
from societal expectations. Firdaus later reflects upon the captivity she felt in her marriage stating I
would rather be a free prostitute than an enslaved wife. The adjective enslaved shows that Firdaus
believes wives to be, literal slaves, captive in their marriage. Stating she would prefer to be a
prostitute instead of a wife is shocking to a western reader, as generally being a wife is thought
to be freer and safer than having to sell your body. Al Sadawi in this phrase not only shocks the
reader, but further introduces the reader to the foreign paradigm of a middle eastern wife and the
sheer desperation due to captivity experienced.
Literal captivity in Firdauses life is experienced under Bayoumi, who entraps Firdaus and prevents
her from having physical and emotional freedom as he traps her in his apartment, using her a sex
object for himself and his

Taxation Is An Issue That Has Plagued The United States Essay
Taxation is an issue that has plagued the United States even prior to the founding of the
nation and the issue at hand is fair taxation. American Colonists were being taxed unfairly
without parliamentary representation, and now ordinary modern Americans are being taxed
unfairly without legal representation. There is a sector of the citizenry that hold the belief that the
progressive tax code, employed by the United States, and is fair as the wealthy pay a higher
marginal tax rate with the operative word being marginal. Typically, wealthy Americans have a
much lower effective tax rate as they have the financial means to employ shrewd accountants
and tax attorneys who find and leverage the many deductions buried within the language of the
70,000+ pages of our current tax code. These are a multitude of deductions of which average
citizens are unaware. A prime example of someone able to lower his or her effective rate of
taxation is the former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney. According to CNN Money, Mitt
Romney made $21 million dollars in one year, but only paid an effective rate of fifteen percent,
which was far lower than the rate he should have paid. Our progressive tax system is one that is
littered with loopholes that allow for the wealthy to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Again,
the loopholes require detective work by qualified attorneys and accountants as the federal tax
code spans 70,000+ of pages of archaic and convoluted text. Not even

Jim Jones Cult Theory
Sociologists view cult behavior as a deviance from society s norm. There are many theories as to
why a cult leader forms a cult and how they garner such complete blind devotion from their
members. While researching Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple I discovered that this particular
cult adhered to several of the proven theories. Jones had few societal bonds and used fear and
intimidation to control his members. He was an extreme socialist turned communist; when his
original goals were met with resistance, he chose the path of rebellion, which was to reject society
s goals and seek to provide his own goals and means to accomplish them (Henslin, 2015). Jim Jones
was born in a small town in Indiana. His father was a disabled WWI veteran who... Show more

utopian commune, more than 1,000 members followed Jones to Guyana (Rosenburg, 2016).
Unfortunately, there was nothing utopian about Jonestown. The commune was run like a prison
camp and Jones was in complete control of all members; no one could leave, phone calls to the
States were scripted, letters in and out were censored, and armed guards stood at the perimeters
(pbs.org). Since communications were severely restricted, Jones began preaching fear to maintain
his control; the Ku Klux clan was taking over American cities, nuclear war was on the horizon,
and concentration camps were being built to house blacks and political activists (pbs.org). He
would preach constantly over the loudspeaker, sometimes all night long, and initiated suicide
drills, which he termed revolutionary suicide. These so called, white nights , where he would give
the members a cup of red liquid that they were told held poison, which they were then ordered to
drink. Later, they were told it was not poisoned and they had passed the loyalty test
(Biography.com, 2014). Jones told his members that, their deaths would be honored by the world as
a symbolic protest against the evils of mankind. He would further tell them that the faithful would
then be transformed and go to live with him on another planet (Harary,

Martin Luther, John Calvin And The Protestant Reformation
One theme present during the reformation, was smaller churches breaking off from the larger
church, and establishing their own forms of christianity. Many people were unhappy with the way
the church was running and sought to reform these flaws by making their own forms of the
church. People such as Martin Luther and John Calvin, were unhappy with how the church was
being run created their own religions. Martin Luther created Lutheranism, which did not believe in
the selling of indulgences and believed that salvation was granted by faith alone. Both of these
ideas went against the Church at the time and his ideas were highly disputed. John calvin had
created Calvinism, which believed in predestination, which meant that God had already decided
who was saved, and who was damned. The idea of predestination also went against the church s
idea that faith and good works lead to salvation. 2. Immorality, ignorance, and pluralism all gave the
church a bad name, but immorality hurt the church the most. Immorality in the church consisted of
gambling, drinking, and promiscuity which cast a bad light on the church as the clergy were
supposed to be men of god and were not to engage in such devious acts. The clergy was also highly
ignorant with many preaches not knowing latin, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Similarities Between Marionettes Inc. And Dark They Were...
Ray Bradbury is an exceptionally great writer, who has written countless stories including The
Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451 . Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois in 1920 and
at age 14 moved to Los Angeles. In 1937 he joined a SciFi league and had his first book
published at the age of 18. He often writes about nostalgia for childhood, social criticism, and the
hazards of runaway technology. These are ideas the Bradbury believes in and feels strongly about.
This is shown in two of his short stories, Marionettes, Inc. and Dark They Were and Golden Eyed .

A Constructivist View of North Korean Nuclear Proliferation
Since the end of the Korean War, the United States has enacted policies to isolate and undermine
the Kim Dynasty in North Korea. A key development took place in the past several decades where
North Korea broke away from the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to develop their own nuclear
weapons and while lacking launch capabilities, they have been successful in their development.
During this process, the United States took active policies to deter the North Koreans in pursuit of
their goals. It is easy to assume that the United States took this stance in order to maintain a military
edge in the region. But under closer examination, this neo realist perspective does not explain why
the United States pursued this policy. In reality, North Korea... Show more content on

The reason the US did not take military action against North Korea was precisely because there
do exist constraints, even presuming anarchy exists in the first place. It is very clear that anarchy
as such is not a structural cause of anything (Wendt, 1995). Anarchy is a social construct that is
ever evolving through changes in norms and identities. The reasons that the US was constrained
did not result from anarchy. Rather, it resulted from a changing international structure that
affected the identity and interest of the US. This conflict began in a time of great upheaval in
the world of international relations. The USSR had collapsed a mere two years prior to North
Korea announcing that it would withdraw from the NPT. This created a sudden gap in what had
been driving American foreign policy up until that point. Prior to the Soviet collapse, the US
policy was simple. It would use all military and diplomatic capabilities to stop the spread of
communism throughout the world. The United States saw itself as the protector of democracy and
freedom throughout the world. Without the USSR, the US needed to construct a new foreign
policy towards the rest of the world and specifically towards North Korea. Whereas the US would
have acted more aggressively if Soviets placed nuclear weapons in North Korea, they were much
more diplomatic in this instance. The difference is that North Korea was no

Hello everybody. My name is Elchin. Today I will talk about Greet Hofstede`s cultural dimensions.
Every manager should have deep knowledge about culture because we live in globalization time.
What is culture? Culture is a system of values, beliefs, and norms shared among a group of people.
People`s culture affect the values in the workplace. That s why management processes should be
different according to cultures and according to the people from different cultures in the workplace.
The most famous study about how culture relates to values in the workplace was conducted by

Individualism and collectivism. In individualistic cultures people focus on their individual goals.
Everyone looks after himself or herself. Every individual think about his or her own success and
happiness. Every individual makes his or her choice. But it is the opposite in collectivist cultures.
Individuals view themselves as the members of groups and think about their group, community
and family needs and goals. For example we have a group assignment in our university. If
someone does not work on assignment, student from individualistic culture would tell it to
professor that he or she doesn t do anything, doesn t work on assignment. Because for him or for
her individual goals and rights are more important. But in collectivist culture if one of the students
doesn t work on assignment, the group would support him or her. They would not tell it to
professor because for the group members group goals are more important. Another example. In
individualistic countries a person chooses his future wife. No one can tell anything to him because
of his choice. But in collectivist countries parents choose or advice wifes for their children and that
individuals agree with it because they believe it is the best way

Effects Of Physical Abuse On Elderly

kind of domestic abuse that deals with children, elderly people, and even married couples. About
4,000 women each year die due to physical abuse and approximately 75 percent of women who
are killed by their spouse are murdered when they attempt to leave or after they have left their
abusive relationship. Abuse is a pattern of behaviors; some are physical, mental, emotional and
they are even sometimes like episodes people go through every day. Around 1 in 10 Americans

Childhood Immunizations and Why Some Children are not Getting Vaccines:

Abstract
Recent outbreaks of measles has promoted renewed interest in childhood vaccinations. However,
lingering doubts about the efficacy and safety of popular and recommended vaccines, specifically
the DTP and MMR vaccines, remain. It is not necessarily the attenuated virus portion of the
vaccines, but the ingredients which assist in the performance of the vaccines, that brings about
concern. Some studies report that, at various times and in certain populations, vaccines may pose

One reason that is resurging in the media is the notion that vaccines can be linked to autism. In
the middle is the result: cases of measles, mumps and rubella are occurring and populations of
children are at risk to contract these preventable viruses. It is therefore important to examine
whether vaccinations are indeed safe, if such vaccines pose adverse health risks, and exactly what
the nature of reasons are as to why some children do not receive their immunizations. Much of the
controversy initially arose out of a study published originally in 1998.
The Center of the Questions of VaccineSafety In 1998 Wakefield et al. published the results of a
study in the British Journal Lancet titled Ileal lymphoid nodular hyperplasia, non specific colitis,

presenting at a hospital with various complaints. These included a loss of acquired skills including
language, and diarrhea and gastrointestinal pain. These children underwent extensive tests which all

Tourism has several impacts on many different aspects of Bali s society. Tourism has impacted on
the already existing, social, economic, cultural and environmental processes of the island. For
example, as a result of tourism the pace of urbanisation has rapid increased and tourism has sped up
the process of economic development.
There are large economic consequences on the economy of Bali. One significant impact on Bali is
the foreign exchange earnings. Tourism is the fourth largest income earner for Indonesia at around
US 5.5 billion (2003). Tourism is very labour intensive, with the influx of tourists more services are

The social and cultural processes are also significantly impacted. Tourism has helped develop and

behavioural impacts, for example; nude sunbathing by tourist is widely disliked by the locals, as
well as that lack of respect is shown by tourists in scared places such as temples. Another negative
impact is the social development of Bali. There are constant conflicts between local villagers and
developers who want the land for hotels and attractions like golf courses. These social impacts have
led to a loss in culture and heritage. Another significant impact is the turning of Balinese culture
into a commodity. The major influx of tourists has plagued Bali s culture. Dances, ceremonies and
arts and crafts are all now adapted to tourists timetables and tastes, and are mass produced to reduce
cost. Also because more people are choosing to work in the tourism industry, this has meant that
fewer are available doe traditional ceremonies and communal tasks, placing more pressure on
traditional community organisations.
As a result of tourism Bali has suffered a lot. In my opinion tourism has plagued Bali and it s

Alopecia Areata
My daughter was a year and a half when she was diagnosed with Alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is
considered an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the
body from foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, the
structures from which hairs grow. This can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere (https:/
/www.niams.nih.gov/Health_Info/Alopecia_Areata/default.asp). Alopecia areatais not a life
threatening disease but it is a traumatic disease.
When my daughter was eight months old she had a high fever. I was working nights and had my
older sister watching my daughter. On this particular night I got off early and when I walked in
the house I heard my daughter crying in her crib. My sister informed me that I was babying my
daughter too much and she had to learn how to go to sleep by herself and self soothe. That is how
she raised her kids and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Last Man By Thomas Campbell Essay
The Encompassing of Solitude and the Manifesting of a Post Apocalyptic Prediction The Earth s
apparent boundary between tangible existence and conceptual objectives consequently ignites
curiosity throughout humanity, while the beckoning of man kind s search for reason throughout
the unexplained components of life, thus, has become inevitable. In contrasting demeanor, some
individual beings have lavished in the comfort that is granted to them through faith and religion.
The repression of one s inquisitive behavior reaps growth in acceptance of trivial mysteries
regarding life. Likely, humanreactions to genuine solitude vary and are ultimately subjective in
accordance to each human s differing perception. Debuting during the Revolutionary era in
literature, The Last Man by Thomas Campbell embraced societal speculation, and provided
interesting documentation that regarded the termination of the human race. The narrator of
Campbell s poem, who presumably lacks the mortal conditions of the human species, garners a
pessimistic outlook upon the forced separation between he and all mortal beings. Opposing
Campbell s dreary attitudes on the topic, Wordsworth delivered a speaker within his poem titled I
Wandered Lonely as a Cloud who insistently, and gleefully observed and portrayed nature from an
area of chosen detachment. Within these poems, Wordsworth and Campbell centralized the concept
of the complete isolation of man from all but the nature that surrounds him. In

Analysis Of The Book The Heidi
Pirandellian Dark Comedy in Wendy Wasserstein s
The Heidi Chronicles
The main aim of this paper is to study Wendy Wasserstein s The Heidi Chronicles (1988) as a dark
comedy in the light of Pirandello s definition of dark comedy. The line between tragedy and comedy
is often thin and at times barely discernable. Certain playwrights have a gift for blurring this line,
which allows audiences to receive their message without often knowing if they should be laughing
at what appears to be a serious topic. Wendy Wasserstein(1950 2006) is one of the contemporary
female playwrights who makes use of dark comedy. She is an excellent example of the genre
dark comedy in the late twentieth century. She has won critical acclaim, Pulitzer Prizes and
numerous additional awards for her writing. Wendy Wasserstein was the first woman in history to
win the Pulitzer Prize as the author of an original play. In a 2001 Harper article on a new
generation of women playwrights, the first sentence reads When you think of female playwrights,
two words invariably come to mind: Wendy Wasserstein (334). Feminist Sally Burke writes that
the feminist playwrights who began their work in the 1970s, even those who won Obie Awards,
were virtually ignored except by scholars of feminist drama; this list includes Wasserstein (1). She
is one of the most important playwrights of our time, yet her work lacks the critical and scholarly
attention it deserves. Tragicomedy has been, in

investigators may have overlooked evidence, and that evidence could be found in the
photographs. After taking photographs of the scene, they will start to collect clue and evidence

fingerprints which can be done using colored powder and a brush, other thizngs such as blood,
firearms, hair, glass and many more things that can be found in the crime scenes. After doing
their job in he crime scene, the evidence they took will be taken to the forensic scientist. Crime

attract potential suitors. Unfortunately, this use of Lily s artistic nature is never wholly

Lily is desperately holding onto her place in society when she goes on a cruise with the Dorsets.
She is working hard to maintain her looks. As Mrs. Fisher says, [Lily] looks ten years younger I
never saw her so handsome (146). Mrs. Fisher also remarks on how the Crown Princess is very
partial to Lily s good looks and charm. However, her skill at the art of beauty ruins her life
because it causes men to be aggressive and women to be jealous. This ignites scandalous rumors
of Lily having affairs. The most fatal of these rumors is started by Bertha Dorset when she
accuses Lily of having an affair with George Dorset. This is a devastating blow for Lily her
whole reputation is ruined. These rumors are believable because, if given the chance, George
would love to have an affair with Lily. In fact, Bertha wanted Lily to join the Dorsets on their
cruise because she knew how attracted George was to Lily and she needed a distraction from
her own affair with Ned Silverton. But once Bertha s affair was unmasked, Lily was no longer
considered useful, and therefore disposed of. According to Louis Auchincloss, Lily s beauty is
the light in which each of her different groups would like to shine, but when they find that it
illuminates their ugliness they want to put it out. Once Bertha unleashes her jealousy (coupled
with her influence and money) on Lily, no amount of artistry can help Lily regain her footing in
society. As she says to Seldon, What can one do when one finds that one only fits into one hole?
One must get back to it or be thrown into the rubbish heap (240) Lily cannot get back to it

Essay on Life in Southern Mill Villages, 1900s
Life in Southern Mill Villages, 1900s
The Industrial Revolution in America began to develop in the mid eighteen hundreds after the Civil
War. Prior to this industrial growth the work force was mainly based in agriculture, especially in the
South ( Industrial Revolution ). The advancement in machinery and manufacturing on a large scale
changed the structure of the work force. Families began to leave the farm and relocate to larger
settings to work in the ever growing industries. One area that saw a major change in the work force
was textile manufacturing. Towns in the early nineteen hundreds were established around mills,
and workers were subjected to strenuous working conditions. It would take decades before these

For a small income these women would sometimes produce a product for a company out of their
homes. These cottage industries were all that was needed at the time.
After the Civil War, the South did not want to rely upon the North for all their textile needs despite
the North being the major textile manufacturer at that time. More and more factories were built in
the South. Cotton mills were built along rivers for their hydropower, usually in rural areas (Glass
14). Mills were also commonly located near railroads to send their finished products throughout the
states (Ulrich 15).
Mill owners did not rely slave labor for their work force. The price of purchasing enough slaves
to fill the many factory positions was too high. This objection also had racist undertones as well
as economic ones. It was believed by some at that time that slaves were not smart enough to
learn even the simplest of tasks. Also it was illegal to teach a slave a trade, even one as simple as
spinning yarn (Glass 19). Factory owners were forced to rely on the poor people in the
surrounding areas for their workforce, especially women and children.
While the new textile industry was growing, the agricultural economy at the time was stagnant. It
became harder and harder for farmers to pay off their debts. Many farmers lost their land and had
to find a new means to support themselves and their families. The factories and

These kids are indeed the protagonists of the storyline. They are extremely relatable characters in
both their fears and tribulations. In the beginning of the film, Georgie is afraid of the dark, and
must conquer his fear to retrieve some wax from the cellar. Nothing was there when Georgie went
into the cellar, but he thought there was something there because his fear made his brain imagine
that something was hiding in the dark. The movie does not start off with jump scares and
creepiness like a majority of horror movies. Rebecca Lewis praises the movie when she writes,
Director Muschietti uses horror tropes such as the young boy afraid of the dark empty cellar and
the pouring autumnal rain to put you on the edge of your seat before you ve even met Pennywise
the Dancing Clown, (Lewis). By starting the film off this way, Muschietti creates an environment
that almost every person to watch the film could relate to. Most people used to be afraid of the
dark when they were young. Georgie s fear of the dark enticed the audience, bringing them into the
experience and reminding them of their own fear of the dark. This is an extremely clever device
used by King and Muschietti to captivate the audience. Aristotle comments in Poetics that the
audience can relate to the protagonist through fear. Joe Sachs comments that, Fear can obviously be
an insidious thing that undermines life and poisons it with anxiety, (Sachs).

Persuasive Essay On Destroying The Earth
If you were informed at a young age that you must reside in the same house until you pass away,
would you lead a lifestyle that results in the destruction of your only permanent shelter? Would you
shatter the windows, smash the appliances, and wreck the structure almost to a point of no return?
Your answer to these questions would most likely be no, because any logical person would see the
absurdity in irresponsibly ruining the one place you are confined to for your entire life. Why, then,
does the humanrace have such difficulty applying this same concept on a larger scale? Why do we
struggle to realize that the collective choices we make affect our surroundings in a monumental
way? Why do we not take the utmost care in preserving the only home we have ever known? If
Earthis the sole place in which living organism can dwell, why are we are steadily destroying it?
The simple answer to these questions is that people naturally have difficulty fathoming what does
not physically manifest. If an issue is not concrete, heated debate over its legitimacy ensues. Even
so, the deeply concerning problem with waiting until the impact of our decisions is visibly
apparent is that it will be too late to reverse the effects by then. Environmental catastrophes
triggered by the actions of humankind are already creeping up on our world like a sluggishly
approaching grim reaper, and we need to take the initiative to ensure our longevity and safety. Of all

How Did John Locke Influence The American Revolution

John Locke John Locke is a well known enlightenment philosopher. He is known for writing Two
Treatises of Civil Government and Thomas Jefferson is known for using his ideas in the
Declaration of Independence. His Treatises heavily influenced the United States and numerous
other republics (A republic is a form of government in which power is held by the people and their

(who are mostly republics) are the strongest countries on Earth and all of them are heavily
influenced by his ideas. The Enlightenment was a time during the 18th century that stressed the
belief that science and logic give people more knowledge and understanding than tradition and
religion. [2] In essence it was a time of self government and logical reasoning instead of relying on

Living In A Small Town Essay
Living in a Small Town in a Big City
Everyone has a different opinion when they have to choose between live in a small town or a big
city. Some people think that living in a small town is peaceful because they feel much closer to the
nature, while the others choose to live in a big city because of its entertainment such as cinemas,
shopping centers, club, and concerts. Also, there are several similarities between small town and a
big city which is history, mission, vision, values, and goals to make their place become much
better. However, most people still do not know how to decide whether they want to live in a small
town or a big city and one of the ways to solve this is to compare them at several points.
Living in a big city can be very different from a small town. Since there are a lot of opportunities
to find a job in a big city, most people have their own variety of occupations. In the morning,
people are wake up and get ready to work. There are several occupations that most people in a big

The reading begins with two researchers Aserinsky and Dement, researching into why humans need

They both came up with a new theory about dreaming, which was in essence, was that dreams are
nothing more than your attempt to interpret random electrical impulses produced automatically in
your brain during REM sleep. (Hock 2013). Basically what they were saying is that while we

androgen itself, is made it the adrenal gland after puberty. Therefore, some scientists and
researchers believe that there is a direct correlation between higher levels of testosterone and
prostate cancer. Although the intention of this paper is to focus on increased... Show more content

The pathway begins with an androgen receptor, which binds different androgens, such as estrogen
and testosterone. (Estorgen is the hormone mainly found in women although, men also have it.
The form men have it in is called estradilol) The androgen receptor is recognized by the ligands
5О± dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone, which are both present in male sexual
development. After the testosterone is formed it is bound to a serum sex hormone binding globulin
(SHBG) and begins to circulate through the body. However, just because the SHBG is bound to
the testosterone only the free form of testosterone can enter into the prostate. Once inside the
prostate, the testosterone has changed into a more potent form of itself, allowing the prostatic cells
to begin to grow. When these cells begin to grow, the prostate does as well. [2] Since testosterone
is derived from a cholesterol molecule, it can easily pass through membranes, like the plasma
membrane, because it is hydrophobic. Other studies believe that a mutation in the androgen
receptor is found to increase the cancer stage. These mutations are found between zero to four
percent in the latent stage and stage B prostate tumors. (Stage B prostate cancer is a cancer that can
be found during a digital rectal exam and is limited to the prostate. It is also

William Carlos Williams This is Just to Say
poem (p m) noun:
1. A verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and

and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme.

Admittedly, form, length and literary devices are not requisite to a poem, as many fine free
verse poems illustrate, but this poem does not compensate for its lack of structure by enhancing
its other aspects. In Mary Oliver s poem Morning, there are no devices aside from alliteration,
yet Oliver s poem is much more complex and interesting for other reasons. The imagery is more
artistic, the words more creative, the syntax more fluid. Oliver describes the linoleum, the wild
words, and the curvaceous response of the lightly leaping cat. The only adjectives Williams uses,
delicious, sweet, and cold, are so common as to have been rendered banal in every reader s mind.
Rather than making the ordinary appear extraordinary through the clarity and discreteness of his
imagery, as the Encyclopaedia Britannica asserts, Williams succeeds only in making the ordinary
appear well, ordinary.
In fact, the whole poem is rather dull. There is no intrigue, no unusual phrase which catches the
attention, no unexpected yet perfect images such as Emily Dickinson s idea of quartz contentment
in her poem After great pain, a formal feeling comes . One might argue that Dickinson s poem
would naturally be more weighty because she was discussing a great pain, yet it is neither the
simplicity of Williams poem nor the

It Is Time to Replace the Electoral College Essay
It Is Time to Replace the Electoral College In 1787, the framers of the constitution assembled and
decided how the new nation would elect its president. It took the framers little less than a month to
accomplish this task. During that month they considered various methods ranging from direct
election of the president, to selection by legislators, to selection by electors. Finally, they settled on
selection by electors, most commonly known as Electoral College. There were various reasons why
Electoral College ultimately won out. We will explore some of the reason later in this essay. I
believe that the reasons which were legitimate at the time are no longer valid and the time has
come for us to replace the Electoral College with a system... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Before we talk about replacing the Electoral College, we must understand how it works. The
Electoral College consists of total 538 electoral votes. Of the 538, 425 votes go to the House of
Representatives, 100 votes to the Senate, and 3 go to District of Columbia, granted to them by the
Twenty third Amendment to the constitution. In the Electoral College system, each state is given a
set number of electoral votes. The number of electoral votes a state receives is determined by the
state population from the latest census records. On Election Day we are voting directly for the
electors, not the presidential candidates. So who are these elector that choose our president and
how are they selected? An elector can be any person except for a Senator or Representative or any
person holding federal office (Edwards III 3). Each state has its own method of selecting an elector.
The most common procedure used in thirty four states is for state conventions of the parties to
nominate the electors. In ten other states and the District of Columbia, the statue party s central
committee makes the nominations. One state, Arizona, authorizes nomination of the electors in
primary elections. The remaining five states use a combination of methods. The most unusual
nomination law is Pennsylvania s, which authorizes each party s presidential nominee to select
electors on his behalf. (Edwards III 2 3)
The framers idea of an elector was someone who would be

Sunshine And Light In The Scarlett Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The Scarlett Letter is a satire based around a Puritan culture
published in the 1850 s. The novel is based around Hester Prynne, who commits adultery against
her husband Roger Chillingworth. Hester s sin causes her daughter Pearl and her to be treated
wrongly by the Puritans. The Puritans are ruthless and harsh towards sinners such as Hester Prynne,
unlike the natural world which is merciful and kind. The novel tells a story of characters trying
to find their way into the sympathetic light or lose their way into the deep despair of darkness.
Hawthorne uses sunshine or light as an element of forgiveness and innocence, while using the
darkness to symbolize the evil. The contradiction between the light and darkness can be depicted
between Pearl who is favored by the sunshine, Hester who is later favored, and Chillingworth who
is enveloped by the evil darkness. Hawthorne s use of sunshine to favor Pearl presents the
understanding that Pearl is innocent and pure. Pearl was brought into the world out of sin and the
Puritans view her as a child from the devil. The use of sunshine and light to Pearl s favor
contradicts these assumptions made by the judgmental Puritans. Supported in the text by Hester
telling Pearl to acquire her own sunshine, No my little Pearl! Said her mother. Thou must gather
thine own sunshine. I have none to give thee! (Hawthorne 96) The text from the novel supports
Hawthorne s use of sunshine to favor Pearl because her mother

Essay on The Dream
The Dream
In the early twentieth century, film maker and producer Adolph Zukor met Jesse Lasky, owner of
Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company. The two men admired each others previous work and, in
1916, decided to combine forces. They created Paramount pictures and had one of the most familiar
slogans in the film industry, If it s a Paramount Picture it s the Best Show in Town . Proving their
slogan true they started turning out more than two pictures per week. During it s peak in the silent
film making era, Paramount was making 5 million dollars a year more than other production
companies such as Warner, Fox, and Universal.(Paramount)

including a Star Trek theme park in Las Vegas.(Viacom)
Entertainment is not all Paramount has provided for the telecommunications and film industry.
Since the company began, the decisions it has made have influenced others in the industry. Even
though they may not have always been the most profitable movie making company, they have
always been interested in broadening their horizons, and the sky was the limit. Not long after
Paramount was created Zukor decided to maintain his company s supremacy in the industry. He
began a theater buying campaign that amassed single houses and entire circuits... By 1930, the firm
s movie house division had grown to include almost 2,000 units and was named Publix Theaters
(Huettig). Paramount helped establish the neighborhood movie theater, along with providing
hundreds of award winning quality movies to view. Paramount has also contributed to the
competitive aspect of the movie industry, forcing actors and directors to do their best work. Stated

A Comparison Of All Quiet On The Western Front
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and actual happenings from the war
display many similarities. The book does go much more in depth with the war than any other
resource or letter, but there is similarities in everything in the book to any other info about World
War 1. Looking from All Quiet on the Western Front
to actual happenings in the war you can bring
them together and see the similarities in living as a soldier in the trenches, and how the men passed
time during World War 1.
Life for a soldier in the trenches in WW1 as described in actual letters and as described as in the
book sounded very alike. In the book it talks about the human eating rats, trench foot and leaving
the dead bodies lying on the ground just for something dry to walk on. Killing each separate
louse is a tedious business when a man has hundreds. The little beasts are hard and the
everlasting cracking with one s fingernails very soon becomes wearisome. (Remarque, 1929, p.
75) This is an example in the book that can be connected to real life is when Paul and all the
other men are sitting around the fire picking lice out and burning them in a tin. Since then we
have learned better than to be shy about such trifling immodesties. (Remarque, 1929 p. 8) In that
sentence Paul is discussing the toilets, or latrines, saying how when he first started using the
them they were nasty and it was embarrassing, but now he s comfortable with using them. I
cannot bear to look at his hands, they are like wax. Under the nails is the dirt of the trenches, it
shows through blue black like poison. (Remarque, 1929, p. 15) Paul describes the trench mud as
poison, because it is. It caused men to lose limbs, feet and sometimes their lives because it
caused gangrene. The rats here are particularly repulsive they are so fat the kind we call corpse
rats. (Remarque, 1929, p. 102) The trenches could be very muddy and smelly. There were many
dead bodies buried nearby and the latrines (toilets) sometimes overflowed into the trenches.
Millions of rats infested the trenches and some grew as big as cats. There was also a big problem
with lice that tormented the soldiers on a daily basis. (Heirs, 2014). In the article it

What Is Jerry s Symbolism In Through The Tunnel
JERRY s CHALLENGE Tunnels can be strange for some people, but seeing a tunnel at the bottom
of the ocean is very strange for Jerry. Jerry is on a vacation with his mother and goes out every
morning to the rocks diving and swimming with the older kids throughout the day. Doris lessing
describes Jerry as a kid who challenges himself against a strange looking tunnel in her story
Through The Tunnel through the use of symbolism in the setting, the trip through the tunnel and
the wild bay. The safe beach symbolises Jerry s connection with his mother. It s the only place
outside their home they can be together. Jerry prefers having fun alone without his mother rather
than with her. The safe beach also symbolises a safe place for Jerry because he s with his mother.
Of course Jerry, when you have had enough, come to the big beach (Lessing, 3). This quote

Supposing his head went around?, in the hot sun, he almost gave up (Lessing, 4).. Jerry had asked

tunnel. So, going through the tunnel symbolise Jerry facing his fear. He knew he must find his way
through that cave , or hole, or tunnel out the other side. First he thought he must learn to control his
breathing (Lessing, 4).. This helps describe the kind of challenge Jerry put himself by going
through that tunnel. Jerry s trip through the tunnel symbolise a big challenge young jerry had

Rhetorical Analysis Of Franklin Roosevelt s Speech
A president who led the United States out of the great depression into a new world and then
through a terrorist attack to be know to have given the most memorable speech of the United
States history is named Franklin Roosevelt. On December 7th, 1941,Pearl Harbor was attacked by
Japan and the following day Roosevelt stood in front of the United Statessuggesting to declare war
on Japan for their actions. Within Roosevelt s speech he uses the audience s emotion to bring
them together against Japan with anger but also with hope. Then Roosevelt goes into the facts
that are leading the country into danger to try and get congress to declare war; Roosevelt s use
of logos becomes a model for other speeches, like Bush s speech after 9/11. Finally, Roosevelt is
determined to show how unethical Japan was during the attack and how declaring war is truly
moral to protect the country. Roosevelt s infamous speech strives to bring the nation into unity to
declare war on Japan through emotion, reason and virtues. Franklin Roosevelt uses his authoritative
credentials, somber tone and selective word choice to direct his audience into an emotional
response toward his speech. He first gets his audiences attention with addressing the higher powers
and then discussing the day that will live in infamy (Roosevelt). Roosevelt wants the emotional
response of congress and the American people to begin to rally in unity toward a war effort against
Japan; he started to obtain unity and emotion of the

My Dog Is The Best Friend
Golden eyes, brown fur, four legs, and a long tongue, what am I? If you haven t guessed already, I ll
tell you, I am a dog, well, I m not actually a dog, that s just the answer to the riddle. More
specifically, I was describing my dog. He is my living artifact, I say that because he is old, and
because I have on other artifacts (that I know of) in my family. I guess we just aren t the
sentimental type, at least not in a, this object represents what we are kind of way. However, to me,
my dogholds a lot of sentimentality mostly through our experiences. I ve never had a human best
friend, and that makes Roscoemy one and only best friend, that is why I choose to make him my
artifact. So, he represents to me hard work, responsibility, friendship, and loyalty.
By now you probably want to know my dog s name, right? His name is Roscoe, and he is a pure
breed chocolate Labrador, and he was born on November 2, 2012 in Spokane, Washington.

I have been raising Roscoe since he was a puppy and I realized that there isn t much of a
difference between the two. They both rely on you to feed them, clean up after them, and love
them, they also whine and have accidents. However, a human child will grow up, and be able to
take care of themselves while a dog will always rely on you. That is a lot of responsibility that,
unfortunately, not a lot of people can handle, which leads to neglect, however, that is a different
essay. I wasn t a very good dog trainer when I got Roscoe, so I didn t house train him correctly and
I barely was able to teach him to sit. However, I always fed him twice a day, tried to give him
daily walks, and cleaned up the yard after him. Having a dog has taught me to be responsible
which gives Roscoe that much more sentimental value. He is not just valued by my found sense of
responsibility, he Is also my best

  • 2. Essay On Effects Of Discipline On Children Spanking has a positive effect on children For many years parents have been disciplining their children in various ways. Discipline is required to train a child in doing what is right and staying away from what is wrong and dangerous. Discipline has always been used in order for the child not to grow up spoiled and choosy. Giving children what they want always is never a good thing, while teaching them that they cannot have everything teaches them patience. Discipline is very critical in a child s life because it is a determining factor on how that child is going to turn out in the future. People will always relate bad parenting to a child s bad behaviour and good parenting to a good behaviour. So how must parents discipline in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The researchers also found out in a survey that 30% of parents believed that spanking was not harmful to their children, 60% believed it harmful to their children, only 10% believed it would lead to severe problems. These statistics raise a startling flag when you think of the nature of this form of correction. Parents should be learned about how their form of discipline affects their child because punishment does not have a sense of discipline as the only outcome. Sometimes children are less responsive to a certain form of discipline than others. It cannot be helped that a child is unique and different from others. The child is also a factor in terms of discipline and punishment it is not solely dependent on his/her parent and the way they discipline. There are other alternatives to punishing the children for their bad behavior. Less severe punishment besides spanking. They can take away their television privileges, computer use, and playing outside with their friends, they could ground them for the weekend and cancel plans, or they could take the time to sit and talk to their children about their bad ... • 3. Essay about Innocent Man by John Grisham The innocent man is the story of Ron Williamson who was unjustly convicted of murder and spent twelve years on death row before being exonerated by DNA evidence. Ron Williamson was born in Ada, a small town in Oklahoma. His future looked bright when he was young and he was an exceptional athlete who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics. After an unsuccessful career in the minors Ron Williamson became a drug addict and an alcoholic whose life steadily got worse. He could not keep any job and he began spending most of his time in bars, and living with various friends. He soon accumulated a criminal record that included DUI?s, check fraud, and two rape charges that did not result in conviction. He became a heavy user of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The book starts of with a very brief biography of the victim, Debbie Carter and takes us to the scene of her murder describing the manner of her brutal rape and death. Following this first chapter the book follows the attempts of the Ada police department as they try to solve the murder of Debbie Carter, and also the abduction of Denice Haraway a few years later. From Grisham?s perspective it seems that the prosecution team was only concerned about pinning the murder on someone and they really didn?t care who it was. Interrogators literally forced Williamson to make his dream confession and this was the basis for the entire prosecution even though the defendant was obviously mentally incompetent The prosecution team used other unreliable sources of evidence, mainly hair samples, and ?jailhouse snitches? who received reduced sentences as a reward of testifying against the defendant. Eventually they manipulated an inexperienced jury into believing their insignificant evidence and Ron Williamson was sentenced to death. His friend Dennis Fritz was sentenced to life in prison, mainly for being the only friend Ron had when the murder occurred. Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot went through a similar process. Even though there is little evidence to say they did not murder Denice Haraway they have never received ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. We Are What We Eat Analysis The importance of food to identity formation is certainly not unique to the immigrant experience. Whether a part of invisible majority culture or deviant minority culture, food environments influence our constructions of credos and categories. Generally speaking, eating preferences and behaviors are part of familial and societal legacies. We may prepare the signature dishes of deceased relatives to mark holidays or guard the secret ingredients of a family recipe. In other instances, particular spices may evoke strong emotions or memories in us. Even in disordered eating behaviors, we tend to reflect social values and constraints.145 In her culinary history of ethnicity in the United States, We Are What We Eat: Ethnic Food and the Making ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Incidentally, food is one of the habits that immigrants in the US often maintain to some degree, even as many other cultural practices slowly decline. 147 Several factors support this phenomenon, including food s ability to: provide the immigrants with a daily portion of home, communicate cultural values and social economies, as well as aid in the process of economic mobility. Food literature expresses this legacy of migration, reflecting these same beliefs and their consequences. For this reason, the identity discourse on food and survival resembles the lived experience of early Arab immigrants.148 Like many other immigrant populations, they formed ethnic enclaves, in which they continued many of their previous cultural practices, including those that involved food. As Naff chronicles in her detailed history, Becoming American: The Early Arab Immigrant Experience, Each settlement was, in fact, a stage on which the memories of village life were reenacted. 149 Naff goes on to describe the eating habits of these early settlements, which preserved Syrian foodways as much as possible. She writes: Their preference ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Soon after the worst terrorist attack in the history of United States occurred on September 11 2001, War of Terror began. President Bush declared war against terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and Talibanthat rooted in Afghanistan. The war just did not disturb the families of the troops, but to all Americans and Afghanis. The drought has severely affected the agriculture. The less production of food have sky rocketed the price of the groceries. The water supply has decreased significantly due to the leakage. Kandahar s network that serves 30% of the city six hour supplies loses 70% of water through leakage (UNEP). As a whole, Afghanistan only uses only one third of its potential resource. Unproductive practice of water usage leads to the water scarcity in Afghanistan. Environmental conditions of Afghanistan have made its citizens life miserable. The credit goes to the Taliban and also the United Statesgovernment. Instead of sending more troops to fight against Afghanistan, more scientist and researchers should be sent to improve the environmental conditions. Use of harmful weapons resulted in depletion of the natural habitation deforestation. US government should stop or at least decrease the use of ammunition. • 8. Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi Essay Captivity in Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi, is a strongly emphasized theme. Fideaus the protagonist is constantly constrained and surveilled within the realms of the Egyptian society subsequently being emotionally, and twice literally, captive. The significance of captivity in Woman at Point Zero is not only for plot or dramatic effect. In the writing of WomanAt Point Zero Nawal El Saadawi wishes to inform the reader about the captivity felt by some women in suppressive countries. In this way, she means the protagonist Firdaus to not only represent one woman but many. Captivity in Woman at Point Zero is not only that of the literal, lock and key. Throughout the novel Firdaus is subject to varying forms of captivity, emotionally... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On describing her captivity in marriage Firdaus also states A virtuous woman was not supposed to complain about her husband, her duty was perfect obedience. , thus, in order to be good one must be totally submissive. This description of a virtuous woman shows how ingrained social expectations were in the society of 1970 s , if one must be perfectly obedient to one other person at all times, then obviously they are captive in both expectations and duty, a duty that was for Firdaus, forced upon her. The captivity is not physical, but rather mental and inflicted onto Firdaus from societal expectations. Firdaus later reflects upon the captivity she felt in her marriage stating I would rather be a free prostitute than an enslaved wife. The adjective enslaved shows that Firdaus believes wives to be, literal slaves, captive in their marriage. Stating she would prefer to be a prostitute instead of a wife is shocking to a western reader, as generally being a wife is thought to be freer and safer than having to sell your body. Al Sadawi in this phrase not only shocks the reader, but further introduces the reader to the foreign paradigm of a middle eastern wife and the sheer desperation due to captivity experienced. Literal captivity in Firdauses life is experienced under Bayoumi, who entraps Firdaus and prevents her from having physical and emotional freedom as he traps her in his apartment, using her a sex object for himself and his ... • 9. Taxation Is An Issue That Has Plagued The United States Essay Taxation is an issue that has plagued the United States even prior to the founding of the nation and the issue at hand is fair taxation. American Colonists were being taxed unfairly without parliamentary representation, and now ordinary modern Americans are being taxed unfairly without legal representation. There is a sector of the citizenry that hold the belief that the progressive tax code, employed by the United States, and is fair as the wealthy pay a higher marginal tax rate with the operative word being marginal. Typically, wealthy Americans have a much lower effective tax rate as they have the financial means to employ shrewd accountants and tax attorneys who find and leverage the many deductions buried within the language of the 70,000+ pages of our current tax code. These are a multitude of deductions of which average citizens are unaware. A prime example of someone able to lower his or her effective rate of taxation is the former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney. According to CNN Money, Mitt Romney made $21 million dollars in one year, but only paid an effective rate of fifteen percent, which was far lower than the rate he should have paid. Our progressive tax system is one that is littered with loopholes that allow for the wealthy to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Again, the loopholes require detective work by qualified attorneys and accountants as the federal tax code spans 70,000+ of pages of archaic and convoluted text. Not even ... • 10. Jim Jones Cult Theory Sociologists view cult behavior as a deviance from society s norm. There are many theories as to why a cult leader forms a cult and how they garner such complete blind devotion from their members. While researching Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple I discovered that this particular cult adhered to several of the proven theories. Jones had few societal bonds and used fear and intimidation to control his members. He was an extreme socialist turned communist; when his original goals were met with resistance, he chose the path of rebellion, which was to reject society s goals and seek to provide his own goals and means to accomplish them (Henslin, 2015). Jim Jones was born in a small town in Indiana. His father was a disabled WWI veteran who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Land was purchased in Guyana and The Peoples Templerelocated with the intention of forming a utopian commune, more than 1,000 members followed Jones to Guyana (Rosenburg, 2016). Unfortunately, there was nothing utopian about Jonestown. The commune was run like a prison camp and Jones was in complete control of all members; no one could leave, phone calls to the States were scripted, letters in and out were censored, and armed guards stood at the perimeters (pbs.org). Since communications were severely restricted, Jones began preaching fear to maintain his control; the Ku Klux clan was taking over American cities, nuclear war was on the horizon, and concentration camps were being built to house blacks and political activists (pbs.org). He would preach constantly over the loudspeaker, sometimes all night long, and initiated suicide drills, which he termed revolutionary suicide. These so called, white nights , where he would give the members a cup of red liquid that they were told held poison, which they were then ordered to drink. Later, they were told it was not poisoned and they had passed the loyalty test (Biography.com, 2014). He would further tell them that the faithful would then be transformed and go to live with him on another planet (Harary, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Martin Luther, John Calvin And The Protestant Reformation One theme present during the reformation, was smaller churches breaking off from the larger church, and establishing their own forms of christianity. Many people were unhappy with the way the church was running and sought to reform these flaws by making their own forms of the church. People such as Martin Luther and John Calvin, were unhappy with how the church was being run created their own religions. Martin Luther created Lutheranism, which did not believe in the selling of indulgences and believed that salvation was granted by faith alone. Both of these ideas went against the Church at the time and his ideas were highly disputed. John calvin had created Calvinism, which believed in predestination, which meant that God had already decided who was saved, and who was damned. The idea of predestination also went against the church s idea that faith and good works lead to salvation. 2. Immorality, ignorance, and pluralism all gave the church a bad name, but immorality hurt the church the most. Ray Bradbury is an exceptionally great writer, who has written countless stories including The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451 . Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois in 1920 and at age 14 moved to Los Angeles. In 1937 he joined a SciFi league and had his first book published at the age of 18. He often writes about nostalgia for childhood, social criticism, and the hazards of runaway technology. These are ideas the Bradbury believes in and feels strongly about. This is shown in two of his short stories, Marionettes, Inc. and Dark They Were and Golden Eyed . A key development took place in the past several decades where North Korea broke away from the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to develop their own nuclear weapons and while lacking launch capabilities, they have been successful in their development. During this process, the United States took active policies to deter the North Koreans in pursuit of their goals. It is easy to assume that the United States took this stance in order to maintain a military edge in the region. The reason the US did not take military action against North Korea was precisely because there do exist constraints, even presuming anarchy exists in the first place. It is very clear that anarchy as such is not a structural cause of anything (Wendt, 1995). Anarchy is a social construct that is ever evolving through changes in norms and identities. The reasons that the US was constrained did not result from anarchy. Rather, it resulted from a changing international structure that affected the identity and interest of the US. This conflict began in a time of great upheaval in the world of international relations. The USSR had collapsed a mere two years prior to North Korea announcing that it would withdraw from the NPT. This created a sudden gap in what had been driving American foreign policy up until that point. Prior to the Soviet collapse, the US policy was simple. It would use all military and diplomatic capabilities to stop the spread of communism throughout the world. The United States saw itself as the protector of democracy and freedom throughout the world. Without the USSR, the US needed to construct a new foreign policy towards the rest of the world and specifically towards North Korea. Whereas the US would have acted more aggressively if Soviets placed nuclear weapons in North Korea, they were much more diplomatic in this instance. The difference is that North Korea was no ... Another negative impact is the social development of Bali. There are constant conflicts between local villagers and developers who want the land for hotels and attractions like golf courses. The major influx of tourists has plagued Bali s culture. Dances, ceremonies and arts and crafts are all now adapted to tourists timetables and tastes, and are mass produced to reduce cost. Analysis Of The Last Man By Thomas Campbell Essay The Encompassing of Solitude and the Manifesting of a Post Apocalyptic Prediction The Earth s apparent boundary between tangible existence and conceptual objectives consequently ignites curiosity throughout humanity, while the beckoning of man kind s search for reason throughout the unexplained components of life, thus, has become inevitable. In contrasting demeanor, some individual beings have lavished in the comfort that is granted to them through faith and religion. The repression of one s inquisitive behavior reaps growth in acceptance of trivial mysteries regarding life. Likely, humanreactions to genuine solitude vary and are ultimately subjective in accordance to each human s differing perception. Debuting during the Revolutionary era in literature, The Last Man by Thomas Campbell embraced societal speculation, and provided interesting documentation that regarded the termination of the human race. The narrator of Campbell s poem, who presumably lacks the mortal conditions of the human species, garners a pessimistic outlook upon the forced separation between he and all mortal beings. Opposing Campbell s dreary attitudes on the topic, Wordsworth delivered a speaker within his poem titled I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud who insistently, and gleefully observed and portrayed nature from an area of chosen detachment. Within these poems, Wordsworth and Campbell centralized the concept of the complete isolation of man from all but the nature that surrounds him. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Book The Heidi Pirandellian Dark Comedy in Wendy Wasserstein s The Heidi Chronicles The main aim of this paper is to study Wendy Wasserstein s The Heidi Chronicles (1988) as a dark comedy in the light of Pirandello s definition of dark comedy. The line between tragedy and comedy is often thin and at times barely discernable. Certain playwrights have a gift for blurring this line, which allows audiences to receive their message without often knowing if they should be laughing at what appears to be a serious topic. Wendy Wasserstein(1950 2006) is one of the contemporary female playwrights who makes use of dark comedy. She is an excellent example of the genre dark comedy in the late twentieth century. She has won critical acclaim, Pulitzer Prizes and numerous additional awards for her writing. Prior to this industrial growth the work force was mainly based in agriculture, especially in the South ( Industrial Revolution ). The advancement in machinery and manufacturing on a large scale changed the structure of the work force. Families began to leave the farm and relocate to larger settings to work in the ever growing industries. One area that saw a major change in the work force was textile manufacturing. Towns in the early nineteen hundreds were established around mills, and workers were subjected to strenuous working conditions. It would take decades before these issues were ... These cottage industries were all that was needed at the time. After the Civil War, the South did not want to rely upon the North for all their textile needs despite the North being the major textile manufacturer at that time. More and more factories were built in the South. Cotton mills were built along rivers for their hydropower, usually in rural areas (Glass 14). Mills were also commonly located near railroads to send their finished products throughout the states (Ulrich 15). Mill owners did not rely slave labor for their work force. The price of purchasing enough slaves to fill the many factory positions was too high. This objection also had racist undertones as well as economic ones. It was believed by some at that time that slaves were not smart enough to learn even the simplest of tasks. Also it was illegal to teach a slave a trade, even one as simple as spinning yarn (Glass 19). Factory owners were forced to rely on the poor people in the surrounding areas for their workforce, especially women and children. While the new textile industry was growing, the agricultural economy at the time was stagnant. It became harder and harder for farmers to pay off their debts. Many farmers lost their land and had to find a new means to support themselves and their families. The factories and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the beginning of the film, Georgie is afraid of the dark, and must conquer his fear to retrieve some wax from the cellar. Nothing was there when Georgie went into the cellar, but he thought there was something there because his fear made his brain imagine that something was hiding in the dark. The movie does not start off with jump scares and creepiness like a majority of horror movies. Rebecca Lewis praises the movie when she writes, Director Muschietti uses horror tropes such as the young boy afraid of the dark empty cellar and the pouring autumnal rain to put you on the edge of your seat before you ve even met Pennywise the Dancing Clown, (Lewis). By starting the film off this way, Muschietti creates an environment that almost every person to watch the film could relate to. Most people used to be afraid of the dark when they were young. Georgie s fear of the dark enticed the audience, bringing them into the experience and reminding them of their own fear of the dark. This is an extremely clever device used by King and Muschietti to captivate the audience. Aristotle comments in Poetics that the audience can relate to the protagonist through fear. Persuasive Essay On Destroying The Earth If you were informed at a young age that you must reside in the same house until you pass away, would you lead a lifestyle that results in the destruction of your only permanent shelter? Would you shatter the windows, smash the appliances, and wreck the structure almost to a point of no return? Your answer to these questions would most likely be no, because any logical person would see the absurdity in irresponsibly ruining the one place you are confined to for your entire life. Why, then, does the humanrace have such difficulty applying this same concept on a larger scale? Why do we struggle to realize that the collective choices we make affect our surroundings in a monumental way? Why do we not take the utmost care in preserving the only home we have ever known? If Earthis the sole place in which living organism can dwell, why are we are steadily destroying it? The simple answer to these questions is that people naturally have difficulty fathoming what does not physically manifest. If an issue is not concrete, heated debate over its legitimacy ensues. Even so, the deeply concerning problem with waiting until the impact of our decisions is visibly apparent is that it will be too late to reverse the effects by then. Environmental catastrophes triggered by the actions of humankind are already creeping up on our world like a sluggishly approaching grim reaper, and we need to take the initiative to ensure our longevity and safety. The rationale behind evaluating high levels of testosterone and prostate cancer is testosterone is necessary for the development of the prostate. Elevated levels are needed for adolescent males can form their reproductive system, in which the prostate is included. In addition, testosteroneis important in the formation of the adrenal gland because testosterone, being an androgen itself, is made it the adrenal gland after puberty. The pathway begins with an androgen receptor, which binds different androgens, such as estrogen and testosterone. (Estorgen is the hormone mainly found in women although, men also have it. The form men have it in is called estradilol) The androgen receptor is recognized by the ligands 5О± dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone, which are both present in male sexual development. After the testosterone is formed it is bound to a serum sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and begins to circulate through the body. However, just because the SHBG is bound to the testosterone only the free form of testosterone can enter into the prostate. Once inside the prostate, the testosterone has changed into a more potent form of itself, allowing the prostatic cells to begin to grow. When these cells begin to grow, the prostate does as well. [2] Since testosterone is derived from a cholesterol molecule, it can easily pass through membranes, like the plasma membrane, because it is hydrophobic. Other studies believe that a mutation in the androgen receptor is found to increase the cancer stage. The imagery is more artistic, the words more creative, the syntax more fluid. Oliver describes the linoleum, the wild words, and the curvaceous response of the lightly leaping cat. It Is Time to Replace the Electoral College Essay It Is Time to Replace the Electoral College In 1787, the framers of the constitution assembled and decided how the new nation would elect its president. It took the framers little less than a month to accomplish this task. During that month they considered various methods ranging from direct election of the president, to selection by legislators, to selection by electors. Finally, they settled on selection by electors, most commonly known as Electoral College. There were various reasons why Electoral College ultimately won out. Of the 538, 425 votes go to the House of Representatives, 100 votes to the Senate, and 3 go to District of Columbia, granted to them by the Twenty third Amendment to the constitution. In the Electoral College system, each state is given a set number of electoral votes. The number of electoral votes a state receives is determined by the state population from the latest census records. The most common procedure used in thirty four states is for state conventions of the parties to nominate the electors. In ten other states and the District of Columbia, the statue party s central committee makes the nominations. One state, Arizona, authorizes nomination of the electors in primary elections. • 42. Sunshine And Light In The Scarlett Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The Scarlett Letter is a satire based around a Puritan culture published in the 1850 s. The novel is based around Hester Prynne, who commits adultery against her husband Roger Chillingworth. Hester s sin causes her daughter Pearl and her to be treated wrongly by the Puritans. The Puritans are ruthless and harsh towards sinners such as Hester Prynne, unlike the natural world which is merciful and kind. The novel tells a story of characters trying to find their way into the sympathetic light or lose their way into the deep despair of darkness. Hawthorne uses sunshine or light as an element of forgiveness and innocence, while using the darkness to symbolize the evil. The contradiction between the light and darkness can be depicted between Pearl who is favored by the sunshine, Hester who is later favored, and Chillingworth who is enveloped by the evil darkness. Hawthorne s use of sunshine to favor Pearl presents the understanding that Pearl is innocent and pure. Pearl was brought into the world out of sin and the Puritans view her as a child from the devil. The use of sunshine and light to Pearl s favor contradicts these assumptions made by the judgmental Puritans. Supported in the text by Hester telling Pearl to acquire her own sunshine, No my little Pearl! Said her mother. Thou must gather thine own sunshine. I have none to give thee! The book does go much more in depth with the war than any other resource or letter, but there is similarities in everything in the book to any other info about World War 1. Looking from All Quiet on the Western Front to actual happenings in the war you can bring them together and see the similarities in living as a soldier in the trenches, and how the men passed time during World War 1. Life for a soldier in the trenches in WW1 as described in actual letters and as described as in the book sounded very alike. In the book it talks about the human eating rats, trench foot and leaving the dead bodies lying on the ground just for something dry to walk on. Killing each separate louse is a tedious business when a man has hundreds. The little beasts are hard and the everlasting cracking with one s fingernails very soon becomes wearisome. (Remarque, 1929, p. 75) This is an example in the book that can be connected to real life is when Paul and all the other men are sitting around the fire picking lice out and burning them in a tin. Since then we have learned better than to be shy about such trifling immodesties. (Remarque, 1929 p. 8) In that sentence Paul is discussing the toilets, or latrines, saying how when he first started using the them they were nasty and it was embarrassing, but now he s comfortable with using them. I cannot bear to look at his hands, they are like wax. Under the nails is the dirt of the trenches, it shows through blue black like poison. (Remarque, 1929, p. 15) Paul describes the trench mud as poison, because it is. It caused men to lose limbs, feet and sometimes their lives because it caused gangrene. The rats here are particularly repulsive they are so fat the kind we call corpse rats. (Remarque, 1929, p. 102) The trenches could be very muddy and smelly. There were many dead bodies buried nearby and the latrines (toilets) sometimes overflowed into the trenches. Millions of rats infested the trenches and some grew as big as cats.
