Academic vocabulary refers to words used in academic contexts across many subjects. It includes general words found in reports, technical words specific to subjects, and words common to multiple disciplines. Academic vocabulary can be found in sources like books, journals, websites, lectures, and more. The best way to learn academic vocabulary is through repeated exposure in context, such as by noticing new words while reading and writing them and example sentences in a vocabulary journal. Practice matching informal words to more formal academic synonyms. Using academic vocabulary effectively means choosing clear language over impressing with complex terms.

My Beginning in America
When I joined the American community for my university education, I faced a lot of changes that I partly anticipated but they came in way that in never expected. After commencing studies at the college, it was time to start getting familiar with my neighbors, lecturers, students that we were pursing the same course, and also students within the college pursuing other courses as well. One of the things that I learned was that I had communication challenges since by English accent being a foreigner was entirely different from that of Americans and people from other countries. After few weeks, I had met a few people from my country and the fact that we shared the same accent made it easy for me to interact with them.
When I started my studies in college, I did not speak English very well, some people did not understand me because, I have different accent. The weather was so cold, I could not go anyplace, and I was at home all time. Sometimes I talked very well, and sometimes I did not. My cousin helped me the first week, and I had no American friends. After two months, I begin improving in my English language I got a lot of friends. we decided to start a small group with the overall intention being to play soccer, and volleyball with American students. I like my friends in my college, they helped in a lot of times such as my studies and in my English language.
To support and encourage each other as well as make sure that we attained our goal, I like used a phrase which says “I have two rules in the life, first: l never give up, second: if I give up I return to the first rule.” This phrase means me a lot in my life, when I study or if I have a big challenge. Sometimes when I am close losing in soccer, or volleyball my friends told me you will lose, I was just telling them “I do not give up”. Also, when we want to buy something like a car, house, get a job, or something else, we never give up before we get something we want to. I want to be a big Electrical Engineer after getting better in English language, and I graduated from University I will never give up. That phrase means believing in yourself. It means willingness to accept “failure” so you can learn the critical skill of adaptation. It means not compromising on your most important values, and walking the walk, rather than just talking the talk.
The good thing about this selected phrase is that it can be used in multiple ways by the group. To start with, apart from the phrase encouraging us to come together and face our common weakness, which is English language, it can also be used by the team to handle other situations and challenges that may arise. For instance, being in a foreign country comes with its challenges like financial challenges and social issues. The phrase can be used by members of the group to bring members together during crisis and support the affected person. When one receives support from p.

Understanding a Constructivist
Prior to beginning this assignment, please review all the required readings, videos, and any relevant Instructor Guidance. It is suggested that you review the recommended resources for this week as a number of them may assist you in creating this written assignment with links to applicable articles.
Please note that for many of you, this might be the first time to write a paper about someone you have no current information about. Thus, it is very important that you know how to synthesize information so that it is your work, and not accidentally someone else’s. One suggestion as you begin to read about one of the researchers is to just jot down notes about them as you read. Be careful not to copy paste information into a document with intentions of re-writing it. Sometimes areas get forgotten and when your writing matches other sources, it can negatively affect not only your grade, but also your entire academic journey, so please heed this advice and ask for assistance from your instructor if you need it. Thus, we have included a link to a guide that could be very assistive in your success.
Over the past weeks, you have been introduced to Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism in relationship to learning psychology. Canons of Rhetoric Speech AnalysisSo what are the characteristi.docxhacksoni
Canons of Rhetoric: Speech Analysis
So what are the characteristics of an effective public speaker?
When beginning public speaking, students are asked the above question. It is often met with responses such as a strong voice, charisma, gestures, addressing the audience in a friendly tone, use of humor, and eye contact. These responses are very similar to one another; they are addressing a speaker's ability to perform for an audience. But this performance is complex, often including other important attributes, such as reasoning with solid information, explaining complex ideas clearly, and providing the audience a clear direction of where the presentation is heading.
Situations similar to this one are not uncommon. Many people think of public speaking as the ability to control nerves in front of a group but neglect considering the importance of having ideas well organized before presenting them or practicing a lot to reduce those nerves. Some people think that because they have apprehension about speaking in front a group, they are completely inept in a public speaking situation. They are often surprised to find out that they are only looking at one piece of the puzzle.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle and his contemporaries began writing about what has become the field of communication today. In writing about what was called the canons of rhetoric, they were laying the foundation for public speaking as we know it today.
Four canons, or categories of criticism, were established:
· invention,
· arrangement,
· style, and
· delivery.
Invention looks at the creation of ideas. When evaluating a speaker from this point of view, the critic may note whether or not the speaker was found to be an authority on the subject matter. This was known as ethos. The critic also may question the use of evidence presented by the speaker (known as logos) and whether the evidence seems to prove what the speaker leads the audience to think it proves. A speaker's credibility would be examined under this canon, and though opinion based, it plays an important role in a speaker's success.
Questions asked under the invention canon might include the following:
· How well informed is this speaker?
· Does the speaker support claims with reliable evidence that is current and from a credible source?
Arrangement allows a critic to analyze the components of a presentation to determine whether or not they accomplish what the speaker intends. For example, a strong introduction usually allows the speaker to capture the audience's attention, to address a central message concisely, and to provide the audience with a clear sense of what path the presentation will be taking. A critic looking at arrangement would be examining the arrangement of ideas and how they contribute to the overall message the speaker intends.
Questions for this canon might include the following:
· Were things presented in a way that was easy to understand and follow?
· Do the introduction, body, and conclusion .

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. What is it?
Academic vocabulary can be hard to define
It can refer to:
1. General words that are considered academic e.g. “The aim of this report
is…”
2. Technical words that are only found in your subject, such as language in
laboratory reports
3. Words that are found in many different academic subjects or journals
In your writing, you are expected to use all three types
3. Where can you find it?
• In your subjects it is everywhere: books, journals, specific websites,
articles, presentations, lectures………..
• There are also websites that list academic vocabulary, and one good
example is The Academic Word List which lists the most common academic
word groups (see the link on this Canvas page)
• The more you read, the more vocabulary you will see (and hopefully learn)
4. How do you learn it?
Well there is no easy way to do this (sorry!), but remember:
Firstly, vocabulary is only learnt in the context, so you need to notice
particular words or phrases that are used in your subject
Secondly, if you are serious about learning new vocabulary then you need to
write any new words / phrases down
By doing this, you can build a record of new words
(and example sentences) that you can refer to
when you write
5. Practice
There are lots of examples of academic vocabulary, but this is a simple
introduction to it. Match the informal word with its academic equivalent:
Informal Academic
as we know a contentious issue
a hot topic it is generally agreed; it is widely accepted
good attain; receive
getting advantageous; preferable
large becoming; growing
more and more significant; important
bad ineffective, undesirable
get (this has many different meanings) an increasing number
6. Answers

bad ineffective, undesirable

7. Also, be clear…..
Remember, using academic vocabulary doesn’t mean you are there to impress
the reader by using complicated language, so you still need to be clear
For example, compare the two sentences:
a)“the company’s practice is contrary to policy and it should cease and desist
immediately”
b)“the company practice is contrary to its policy and so should be stopped
immediately”
Both are grammatically good, but sentence b is clearer
8. Extra Help
I could put lists of words in this presentation for you to remember, but this would
not be useful to you. Why?
Because, for vocabulary to be useful, it has to be:
- in a situation (context) that means something to you
-and to actively remember the word, you need to use it regularly
Look at the links on the Canvas page for further practice and vocabulary ideas
