Strengths Of Un Peacekeeping
WHAT IS PEACE KEEPING?
Peacekeeping has proven to be one of the most effective tools available to the UN to assist host
countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. Peacekeeping has unique strengths,
including legitimacy, burden sharing, and an ability to deploy and sustain troops and police from
around the globe, integrating them with civilian peacekeepers to advance multidimensional mandates.
UN Peacekeepers provide security and the political and peace building support to help countries make
the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace.
UN Peacekeeping is guided by three basic principles:
 Consent of the parties;
 Impartiality;
 Non use of force except in self defence and defence of the mandate.

In absence of a well regulated and monitored Police Administration, the need, goal and aspirations of
the people and also of the Government cannot be achieved systematically. Whenever there is war, the
first casualty apart from the battlefront is the disturbance of normal functioning of the Civil Society.
Due to war, Army is involved in fighting battle at the front. The Para Military force and the police
have to take up additional duties such as guarding the border and supplementing the army. Due to lack
of police manpower, the Civil Administration is burdened with ever increasing requirements to
maintain Law Order in chaos. The Civil Administration and the Judiciary depend upon the role of the
police to maintain peace, harmony and tranquility. Auxiliary Police Units like Home guards and Civil
defense are pressed into service to supplement the depleted police force. When war or external
aggression takes forms of defeat or invasion by enemy country, the local police set up, civil
administration and judiciary function under the alien power. In such a situation police and law

The Ten Commandments
The purpose of this paper is to examine three of the Ten Commandments. The focus will be on the
strengths and weakness of first, second, and fourth commandment, as well as a which commandment
should be rewritten for the 21st century Christian. The First Amendment of the United States
Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government
interference. The Freedom of Expression consisted of the rights to freedom of speech, press, assembly
and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and
belief. The Supreme Court then explains the extent of the protection afforded to these rights, the Court
has also explained the First Amendment as applying to the entire ... Show more content on

The Fourth Amendment also lengthens further security by demanding that warrants be issued and
empowered by law to allow a search and seizure. Furthermore, a warrant will only be distributed if
probable cause can be proven. The fourth Amendment gives for extra requirements and protection of
citizens due to the misuse of the writ of assistance during the American Colonial Period. The writ of
assistance was a type of general search warrant that was employed by tax collectors to search the
homes of the colonists and seize goods, which was commonly misused and the collectors would often
just take what they pleased. Lastly, with rewriting the Fourth Amendment should state that searches of
persons and properties shall be conducted only when the person or owner of the said property is well
notified and informed. Seizures of properties shall have acceptable permission from the court and
written notice provided to the owner of said property defining to what property is to be seized. In
conclusion, there are so many draw backs and benefits when it comes to the constitution. However,
when it comes to rewriting the constitution not everyone will agree. Some will say rewriting the
constitution may be secret sauce that society needs to fully understand the message it is trying to
deliver, while on the other hand some would consider it to be

Theme Of The Power And The Glory By Green
As a catholic writer, Greene stands for Catholicism with its spiritual concept inside the individual. In
The power and the glory, he criticizes the ideological authorities, the church and the Marxist
government, which create anger and tension in the world at the expense of people s need for spiritual
comfort which they find only in religion. From an objective perspective, Greene presents the reality of
the two authorities; the church with its pride and deception, and the Marxist government with its
violence and coldness. Both carry noble aims, but when it comes to application, corruption prevails,
and nothing is left to hold on but religion.
The power and the Glory is based on different levels of anger. The first one is the outrage at the

Disagreements During Ww1
From who stole the cookie from the cookie jar to who started World War I, disagreements immensely
affect the lives of everyone no matter what the topic deals with. Certainly, every war is caused by
disagreements throughout countries including World War II and the Civil war that resulted after World
War I. Arguments begin because people want their way. This even includes specific tribes and
nationalities in the world wanting their rights and own ways of life. Countries need to stand up for
their rights and ways of life just like people individually, which usually leads to disagreements
because everyone wants something different. Conflict arises between regions for a great amount of
reasons. Because of conflict involving unbalanced power is Europe, World War I was created. Tension

For example, the Al Qaeda terrorist group represents itself extremely patriotic. They stand for what
they want and fight for their rights. Although Al Qaeda is known to be negatively effective, they
follow the same path that countries took during World War I. They are especially nationalistic for the
reason that they have their own separate beliefs from other countries. Because they represent
themselves with different beliefs, they cause a great deal of conflict between the countries of the world
much like how World War I was started. Al Qaeda is also merely powerful in behalf of their
population and weaponry which scares a load of people in the world. Citizens, much like in World
War I, fill with fear of this overpowering control. Despite the fact they come from a different time era,
Al Qaeda and European countries from the war share a ton of similarities. Because of overpowering

How To Build A Garage Door Opener
Garage door malfunctions can be extremely inconvenient, but a sound understanding of common
garage door malfunctions can allow you to handle these issues before they are able to cause major
disruptions in your home. In particular, the rollers and door opener can be prone to encountering
issues. After learning about some of the common issues these components can experience, you will be
in a much better position for keeping the garage door running smoothly. How Can You Tell If The
Rollers Are Damaged? The rollers of the garage door are essential for allowing the door to move along
the track. However, the garage door is extremely heavy, which can put tremendous stress on the
rollers. Eventually, this can lead to the rollers warping or breaking, and this will ... Show more content

This may be an annoyance, but it is easy to understand given the tremendous stress the motor
undergoes when opening and closing these heavy doors. Typically, a failing garage door opener will
make loud grinding sounds due to the internal components rubbing against each other. Also, it may not
be able to smoothly open and close the door. This may lead to it slowing as it is opened or slamming
into the ground when it is closed. If the opener is malfunctioning, it should be addressed as soon as
possible because this type of damage may be progressive, which can yield sizable repair costs when
this repair is delayed. A garage door must have many moving parts functioning correctly to be able to
easily open and close. These doors may experience sizable issues with either the rollers or the opener,
and it is important to be able to spot these issues. However, you should not attempt either of these
repairs on your own. If this work is not done correctly, you may cause major damage to this part of
your home. As a result, you should contact a professional if you notice any of these issues with your

Ritual Purification In Shinto Religion
Ritual purification is a part of various religions and is the most basic practice of life in the Shinto
religion for those who are followers. the main focus for the practice of purification is to get rid of the
impurities within the body and soul of the individual regarding anything that the person does for each
day , and specifically before they practice daily devotions. The negativity that one is attempting to
dispose of is not the same as physical impurity, for example, either garbage or dirt. Harae or Harai is
one of four vital components included in Shinto religion. The main focus of the ritual is to get rid of
pollution, sins the person has committed, and any uncleanliness. The idea of Harae incorporates bad
luck, guilt, as well as disease. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Shinto they focus on 4 main ideals which include cleanliness, brightness, balance, what is right.
Thought the practice of these ideals that Shintos make part of their everyday life it is reflected through
all four ideals. Every so often things can become unstable in a individuals physical environment,
spirit, and mind so they must restore their balance these everyday rituals of purification and
cleanliness. The most important ritual is misogi which is quite similar to Harae which of course is
consisting of purification through water and can take place where water is present. Just like Harae a
priest will wave a stick with streamers but he waves the stick over a shrine and then waves over the
individual who are apart of the ceremony. The priest gets rid of all bad and negative impurities
affecting the individual to give them a property and balance. In this tradition the cleansing of
impurities is like a basic necessity of life for the Shinto. The individuals who are partaking in the
ceremony wash their hands and face before coming in contact with the shrine. The priest who is
holding the ceremony cleansing the path that leads to the shrine so no impurities reach the altar when
they reach it. Then the worshipers must make an offering of fresh fruit to present to the

Throughout their lives, women of all ages are constantly being bombarded with advertisements
convincing them they must meet an ideal of the perfect body image. This is all thanks to companies
that share a common goal to influence the mainstream population into believing they need to purchase
certain products in order to compare to the impossible standards set by the beauty industry. In Dave
Barry s Beauty and the Beast he displays that it is planted in young girls minds that they need to look,
dress, feel, and even act a certain way. However, men aren t as affected by these capitalistic marketing
schemes. In short, the media has affected the way women think of themselves. These influences of bad
habits are all around us. There are four major categories of mass media to control what we see
everywhere we go. Broadcast media is what we see on television, or in movies and hear on the radio.
Another major form of media is Digital media which allows mass communication all over the world

Life reviews may be used for anyone, but they are predominantly used for patients who are exposed to
hospice and terminal care. The particular goals that could be extracted for these patients may include
helping older adults reach closure and improving their qualities of life. In talking about the good ol
days with a supportive listener, feelings of isolation from an older adult may be reduced and feelings
of positivity would be further introduced. Through life reviews, an older adult is able to experience
increased socialization and connectedness with others. It also provides cognitive stimulation, improves
communication, and can significantly decrease depression (Touhy amp; Jett, 2012, p. 100).
Though life review and ordinary remembering seem synonymous, the two share very compelling and
diverse similarities and differences. Life review and ordinary remembering are similar in that they
both deal with recollections of the past from the onset of adolescence. The pivotal difference is that a
life review takes a further step and helps the older adult recollect past memories by search for meaning
within each experience and tapping into the emotions of those experiences. Ordinary remembering
refers to a more informal and objective recollection of past experiences, while life review is the more
formal, structural, and subjective examination of past

The use of archetypal elements in distinguishing heroes and villains is not is largely used in superhero
comics and they appear in a variety of popular fiction, revealing the values of the hegemonic culture
through its villains. When discussing the phenomenon of a popular culture item reflecting the
sentiments of a nation, one should not uncritically equal the superhero with America. Despite the fact
that the superhero can be said to typify the national character that is particularly America (Reynolds,
1992, 18), one ought to be aware that the qualities and ideals anticipated on to the hero are usually
those of the dominant, hegemonic culture, whereas the villains usually possess those qualities which
the hegemonic culture views as undesirable. This is a typical narrative in well known fiction,
discussed in several comics for example Muslim Girl and the Green Lantern Corps, where the hero is
given all the positive social values while the villain portrays the negative social vices for example
racism and sexism. This archetyping is important since racism has been a common vice in the
American society.
The early 1960s was the time of a major reevaluation of youth culture as an economic, social, and

whose quirks spoke of modifying of the formulas for comic book superheroes. In 1962 Spider Man

The Genius Of The Constitution Tyranny
The Genius of the American Constitution
Since the advent of human government, one of the principle fears held by the constituents of the
government has always been to prevent any form of tyranny or abuse within it. Tyranny can be loosely
described as one person or a group of people having total power in a government leading to the
subjugation and oppression of people s rights. Many new nations wish to eliminate any aspect of their
government that may eventually lead to tyranny. The United States was no different in this respect; the
framers of the Constitution longed to have no signs of tyranny in their government because they had
gone to war with Britain for that very reason. In 1787, a group of fifty five delegates came from ...

James Madison in Federalist Paper #51 writes Hence a double security arises to the rights of the
people. The different governments will each control each other, at the same time that each will be
controlled by itself. This idea of Federalism allows the governments to be supervised by the others
while having control over itself. The powers of the government are spilt between the central and state
government so neither government could gain more power over the other. The powers that state
governments have are more specific to the state then the powers given to the central government. For
example, states were given the powers to pass marriage and divorce laws, establish schools, set up
local governments among others because these issues differ largely from state to state. Hence, it would
make it illogical to give the central government these types of rights because these issues vary from
state to state making it an act of tyranny by the majority against the minority. (Document A) The
framers of the Constitution recognized that if one person or a group of individuals gets all the powers,
tyranny was inevitable and to prevent this it became evident that a separation of powers must be
established. The framers acknowledged that it was possible to have a tyranny in a democracy as stated
in Federalist Paper #47 The accumulation of all powers...in the same hands..., and whether hereditary,
self appointed, or elective... is the very definition of tyranny. Thus, it was decided

Virtue in Telemachus’ Life
Telemachus is the son of Odysseus and Penelope in the Odyssey. He was raised without a father and
this caused him not to have a strong male example in his life. He was forced to mature into a man on
his own and become the man his father was. Telemachus is required to figure out ways to be
honorable on his own and this causes him to have a deeper responsibility than the normal man of his
age. In Telemachus life, he is able to mature into an adult man capable of making virtuous decisions
and acting with the honor that is required of a virtuous man of the Greek world and Christian world.
Virtue in the Greek world was determined mainly by how one is viewed by others. This was an

This event shows that he is ready to assume the role of king if his father would not make it back. The
first time Telemachus shows bravery is when he tells the suitors to leave the palace (Odyssey 2.155
58). He does not know how they will react or even if they will try to kill him on the spot. Towards the
end of the Odyssey, Telemachus proves himself a worthy warrior and gains his honor when he fights
the suitors with his father. He paused with a warning nod, and at that sign Prince Telemachus took his
stand by a chair that flanked his father, his bronze spear point glinting now like fire (Odyssey 21.480
84). According to the Greek tradition of virtue, Telemachus has become a man of arĂȘte and virtue
since he excelled on the battlefield and in gaining honor from his travels.
Telemachus would have been viewed virtuous according to the Christian standards since he has each
of the theological virtues required. He shows the virtue of faith by believing in the goddess Athena
after she reveals herself as being disguised as Mentor. Nestor speaks for Telemachus and says, quickly
carry out my wishes now so I may please the gods, Athena first of all (Odyssey 3.467 68). Telemachus
trusts the god s plan and the information they have provided about his excursion. He shows the virtue
of hope by using his trust in the gods to help him speak in front of King

A Brief Look at Karl Marx
A person does not have to positively impact the world to be influential. Karl Marx certainly left a
mark on the world, but whether his impact was revolutionary or simply detrimental is up to debate.
Marx was largely influenced by the ideas of Enlightenment figures like Adam Smith, David Ricardo,
and Hegel. Most know him in regard to his writing the Communist Manifesto and its influence on
revolutions that led to the formation of notoriously oppressive communist states. His ideas form the
base of modern international communism, and for that Michael Hart gives Karl Marx a ranking of
twenty seven in his book The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History. This ranking
seems accurate given the factors that influenced him, his accomplishments, and their effects on the
world. Karl Marx drew from the philosophies of the great thinkers of his time to perfect his ideal
communist system. He was born into a time when ideas of the Enlightenment were widespread. He
read the works of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and the Comte de Saint Simon (Columbia Electronic
Encyclopedia). However, he was especially influenced by G.W.F. Hegel, the most prominent
philosopher in Germany in the early 1800s (Microsoft Encarta). Hegel believed that ideas evolve
through a continual process of contradiction and resolution and that human history is driven by this
evolution. Consequently, Marx developed the belief that history evolves through a series of conflicts
in a predictable, unavoidable

Nurses with Addiction
Nursing is one of the most stressful careers in healthcare. Long hours of direct patient care take its toll
emotionally and physically. While the profession is rewarding for most, the constant stress can
become a catalyst for all kinds of self damaging behaviors. The American Nurses Association
estimates between ten and twenty percent of nurses will abuse drugs within the workplace at some
point during his/her career (ANA, 2002). This percentage is similar to that of substance abusers within
the general population. Due to the ease of access to narcotics on the job, it can be difficult to recognize

As a professional, you are required to deal with situations outside of your beliefs and find avenues to
vent your frustration, grief and stress without harming the patients, yourself, or the relationship

regarding this situation. We all know that stealing medications from patients for personal use is wrong
professional ly, personally and legally. Perhaps our lack of understanding is due to the inability to
relate to those with drug addiction.
All coworkers within an organization need to be educated to recognize potential issues of narcotic
abuse within the workplace. Since healthcare professionals are able to hide some signs of abuse such
as work absences, it may be more difficult to recognize a problem in the early stages. Some physical
signs to be aware of include: irritability, forgetfulness, isolation, and decreased levels of motivation.
Issues in personal life may also increase the chances of drug abuse, such as: stress, family problems, a
previous history of mental illness, and a history of prior abuse (any type). Potential issues must be
reported to the Nurse Manager as soon as possible. In order for the organization to protect the safety
of its personnel and patients, ethical standards of practice must been routinely stressed within the

Aristotle, A World-Renowned Greek Philosopher Once Noted
Aristotle, a world renowned Greek philosopher once noted a tragedy is the imitation of an action that
is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself...in a dramatic, not in a narrative form;
with incidents arousing pity and fear, wherewith to accomplish its catharsis of such emotions
(Bywater, 1920, p. 35). These words encapsulate the perception that tragedy is a mimicry surrounded
by an underlying purpose through a direct action that arouses the audience s emotions of fear and
relief by witnessing a dreadful or gripping change that happens to the protagonist. Between Greek and
Elizabethan times, characters were developed to portray tragic people, who possessed flaws that

Cordelia chose to be truthful with her father instead of lying like her sisters, which caused her to be
disowned, thus establishing the central conflict to arise within the kingdom. In relation, Jason ridded
Medea as a wife and began an affair with the Princess of Corinth to make provision for you [Medea]
and the children (Euripides, 1993, p.15) . Even though he thought this would benefit Medea and their

Medea and Jason, which later is shown to be detrimental to Jason. Although their flaws caused tragedy
to strike, Cordelia and Jason remained consistent in their behaviors throughout the play and never
changed who they truly were.
Consistency of a character s attributes and traits during a play tends to create a more believable
character and storyline. According to Poetics, a written theory by Aristotle, it states that the second
most important element in a tragedy is a character that never does or says anything that will be seen as
acting out of character (cited in Lonardo, 2012). When a character does something that is against their
better judgment, it makes it difficult for the audience to accept that what they are doing is the right
course of action. Furthermore, Aristotle goes on to specify that for a character to be considered a

Anger And Forgiveness In The Film Smoke Signals

that take place in each character, think about yourself and what feats you have overcome with anger

Arnold Joseph battles within his own conscience throughout the film and it isn t obvious whether he

father, Arnold. He struggles to forgive him for abandoning him as a child, for his alcoholism, and the
physical abuse him and his mother were subjected to. Victor also shows anger towards Thomas Builds
the fire because of their differing views of Arnold Joseph. The only one who doesn t express anger and
is very forgiving is Thomas Builds the fire. He of all people has a right to be angry, after all, he has
lost the most at the hands of another, whether on purpose or by accident. But, he goes through life as a
happy go lucky person, an imaginative storyteller, and above all a caring individual to others.
Interesting enough, the character who changes the most as the movie goes on is Victor Joseph. It isn t
easy for him to forgive, but, as he grows as a person and learns the truth about his fathers actions he
eventually finds peace.
The setting for the majority of the movie takes place at the Coeur d Alene Indian Reservation in Idaho,
but changes when Thomas and Victor travel together to Arizona later in the movie. The movie begins
on July 4th, 1976 and sets the initial conflict early on. It quickly advances to 1998 when the boys are
grown, but, shows excerpts from the past throughout the movie as they reminisced. The Reservation is
portrayed well, showing how Native American societies lived and

Students With The Tools And Strategies
Introduction The goal for every teacher is to equip their students with the tools and strategies they
need to be successful. Educator s today are faced with many obstacles in order to meet the academic
and emotional needs of all students in their classroom. Traditional classrooms move students to
another classroom at the end of the year, while looping provides educators the opportunity to remain
with their students to the next consecutive grade level. The shift toward single grade classes with a
single teacher educational model was established and remains prominent today (Roe, 2009). Looping
is a practice where the teacher remains with the same students for more than two or more years.
Looping provides the potential for both academic and social benefits for students. (Eric Digest) The
additional time allows educators to provide students a sense of stability, an expanded curriculum that
builds upon previous learning experiences and prior background knowledge, and the time to build and
maintain strong interpersonal relationships and a sense of community (Kerry Roe, 2009). The idea
behind looping is to avoid student anonymity by creating a longer term relationship between the
students and their teacher in a learning community. Academic benefits were reports with improved
academic achievement scores, and more enthusiastic attitudes toward learning in general. The looping
environment offers teachers the opportunity to have a deeper understanding of their students, which

Posidonia Decline
Reasons for decline of Posidonia oceanica P. oceanica meadows are met in transparent and pure
waters of Mediterranean area. The prevalence of Posidonia meadows in clear water is a useful tool for
biomonitoring the clearness of the desired area. Along with Mytilus galloprovincialis, the
Mediterranean mussel, Posidonia is a natural reservoir of different metals acquired from the
environment. These metals are released from industrial, agricultural and urban activities in the coastal
area and are one of the most persisting pollutants in the environment (Bethoux et al. 1990). Due to its
sessile property, Posidonia is an ideal organism for biomonitoring. In a study conducted to compare

Frequently, alien species overcome indigenous species by decreasing their reproductive rate,
effectively consuming food resources, and possibly leading to extinction of native species (Mooney

Caulerpa racemosa, a tropical macroalga, which is listed as one of the worst invasive species in that
region (Streftaris and Zenetos, 2006). This macroalga has affected gravely the marine ecosystem,
changing food web network and the composition of animal and plant inhabitant across the meadows

The Theory Of Education On Children s Brain Development
In life there is always something going on in the background and music surrounds us every day
whether we notice it or not. So why not intrigue students by bringing it into the classroom? There is a
lot of benefits to having music in the classroom and it helps students expand on their knowledge.
However, to bring it into the classroom a teacher needs to acknowledge how children learn. There is a
multitude of research on children s brain development. Therefore let us dive into the findings and
beliefs of Swiss psychologist Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi. According to the Columbia Electronic
Encyclopedia, Johann s theories have laid the foundation of modern elementary education. His theory
of education stresses the importance that the individuality of a child is foremost. As noted above,
Pestalozzi broke from the mold of the predominant system beliefs of strict discipline and
memorization learning. This approach is more child centered than a teacher approach to teaching. It
focuses on the child s needs and interests. It encourages a loving environment and it replaces the
authority of strict discipline. Furthermore, Pestalozzi was inspired and expanded on Jean Jacques
Rousseau s findings. He refined his thoughts on head, heart, and hands in harmonious unity. Pestalozzi
stated that the head forms the cognitive capacity to think and understand. In addition, he stated the
heart is the sense of direction and inner dignity within us. The last element, the hands represents

Disappointment In Madame Bovary
One of the most common emotions humans have is disappointment, or the feeling of dissatisfaction
and emptiness. Most often, this feeling comes through the loss of love. For example, breaking up with
your partner can leave you feeling defeated and lonely. Once this happens, one usually attempts to
move on and forget about that person, sometimes in the way of finding someone to fill their void in
their empty heart. In Gustave Flaubert s master novel Madame Bovary, there are multiple encounters
with dissatisfaction that creates the theme of disappointment. The two main characters that Flaubert
uses to show dissatisfaction through are Emma Bovary, also known as Madame Bovary, and Charles
Bovary. Emma Bovary seems to be faced with empty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also shows the conflict of how Flaubert never allows Emma to be in a grasping distance of her
desired satisfaction. She is continually always so close to her longing desire, but can never quite grab
it. The reader gets one of the first glimpses at her disappointment several weeks after the Vaubyessard
Ball, still dreaming about the magical night she had. From the beginning of July she counted on her
fingers how many weeks remained before October, thinking that the Marquis d Andervilliers would
perhaps give another ball at Vaubyessard. But September passed by without one letter or visit. After
the distress of this disappointment, her heart once more remained empty (79). That night at the ball
gave Emma a feeling like no other of how love should feel and look like. It seems like from that point
on, she has a concrete idea of what love is. With the ball still humming in her ears, she was trying to
stay awake in order to prolong the illusion of this luxurious life (79). This longing to back to such an
illusion shows that Emma is continually being pulled away from Charles and toward something she
can t attain. She continues to drift away from Charles a greater amount once she begins her affair with
Rodolphe. All was going well with Rodolphe until, of course, Emma lost interest, along with
Rodolphe losing his love for her and only

Cross Cultural Communication
Cross cultural communication Bearing that we all come from varying cultures and cultural
backgrounds do dictate a lot the type of reactions we receive from the pubic as well as the way we
react to other people around us, there is need to use our communication tools as an access tool to the
people of the different culture. Being a Chinese who has lived in the USA for 4 years, I have come to
realize that the use of communication accommodation has been one of the best tools to overcome the
barriers that can be between me and the majority of the cultures around me. In a society that is
multicultural in composition, it is most significant that people from the varying cultures strive to
embrace each other for a harmonious coexistence. In order for this to take place, one of the central
pivots is the cross cultural communication. For this to take place, there is need for what is known as
communication accommodation theory to be applied and used appropriately. This is the approach that
has made my stay in the USA bearable despite the varying religious, cultural, race, nationality among
other central tenets of existence. According to Howard G., (2013) there is tendency for the people who
seek the approval of others whom they come across in an intercultural encounter to adjust their speech

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Literary Criticism Essay
In the story Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and The Ones Who Walk Away from
Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin, the authors have created characters who symbolize themselves.
Huxley s and Le Guin s characters have minds that readers can t understand or comprehend their
intentions. Even though their stories were written during two different time periods, you can still see
how they use optimism to create their literature. By applying a psychoanalytical criticism, readers can
compare the characters in Brave New World and The Ones Who Walk Away From
Omelas and see how they express their fears and emotions, how they reflect on themselves, and how
they act or don t act on their desires.
Expressing feeling is a way that Huxley s and Le Guin s stories are compared to show how emotions
give their characters human emotions to express their differences from other characters. Huxley s
book Brave New World has many characters that express many emotions, but one character named
John the savage, a character who had it harder than anyone in the book.
Huxley s writes John the savage as a character that is scared to show his emotions, battles to keep lust
and love separate, to understand what his personal feelings are. Bound by strong vows that had never
been pronounced, obedient to laws that had long since ceased to run, he sat averted and in silence this

Tiger of Asia. Some people portray him in the negative light, while some portray him in the positive

Rotary Youth Leadership Analysis
The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards has a special place in my heart because I feel that it has truly
changed my life. When I arrived at RYLA for the first time I had no idea what to expect and as I
stepped out of my school s van I was overwhelmed by the amount of excitement in the air but by the
end of the day I was already hooked. After my camper year I knew I had to try to come back as a CIT
and then again as a Chief. Now that I have been able to experience RYLA from all three angles it is
safe to say that it can truly change a young persons life. The meaning of leadership can vary
depending on the person but to me leadership is the way a person, or group, leads a group of people in
a task. Everyone has their own form of leadership but I personally prefer to lead by example as well as
consult with the group before I make a decision. I feel that with this form of leadership I will never be
asking someone to do something that I wouldn t do myself, and it allows for members to become

To Have Or To Be By Erich Fromm
People and other animals have a tendency to feel love or to be in love. Animals pretty much are
different from animals involving emotion they may seem as if they love their toys or the food that
their owner gives them and even the owner but animals don t have a sense of understanding on what
love is. People on the other hand feel as if they have a understanding of the word love but do they
really have an actual meaning of what love or to feel what love is. Is love just a made up English word
that no one knows about or is it an emotion that everyone can feel. I personally feel as if I know what
love is. For example, I know that I love my mom and when I see my mother and father I know they
love each other that s why they got married. But, as I read the passage on love in Erich Fromm s book

Korsgaard Intentionality
In Morality and the Distinctiveness of Human Action , Korsgaard does not agree with the veneer
theory and proposes that human beings are originally acquisitive, but they become moral beings
through the process of living and growing up under the circumstance of society. In this paper, I will
defend this argument. I will first explain in detail what self government is and why it is the most
important to human morality. Then I address two opposing arguments. The first one challenges the
theory of deepest level of intentionality , and the second one used the example of children to attack the
self government theory. I will point out the weaknesses of these arguments to show the validity of
Korsgaard s theory.

They claim that her argument fails to explain the case of children, who are not completely, but only
partially responsible for their behaviours and actions. In this case when children might do wrong and
held not responsible for their action since they are underaged, we could not draw the conclusion that
all human beings have the capacity for self government. However, I do not agree with this view.
Admittingly children do have limited responsibility, and people hold more lenient standard when
judging their behaviours, it does not imply children, as a subgroup of human beings, does not have the
capacity for self government or deepest level of intentionality. For grown ups, the reason why we
believe they have the deepest level of intentionality is because, they have the ability to adopt their
purposes. Adopting their purposes requires human beings to judge the person will need to judge which
purpose is morally justifiable, despite there is a urgent and strong affective state affecting his emotions
and feelings. The ability to judge plays a significant role in the self government process. However, it
should be noted that, such ability is gained through the process of growing under the context of
society, learning what is moral and immoral, acquiring skills of judging rights and wrongs by
observing the society around us and interacting with other human beings. It is trained from the

The Political Nature Of Europe
When King Leopold II of Belgium took the throne, he began looking for somewhere that the people of
Belgium could colonize, not necessarily to live there, but to offer its economic support to the
kingdom. However, the political nature of Europe meant that Belgium would need to look overseas for
stability. Thus, Leopold sought a colony for Belgium in Africa, namely the Congo. Throughout the
time that Leopold managed this colony, he used a variety of methods to try and convince this people
that the imperializing of the Congo was a good thing and helpful to Belgium as well as needful for the
people of the Congo. However, the realities of what truly happened in the Congo still leaked out for all
to see. At the time that Leopold took the throne of Belgium, the country had only been free since
1830. It s position in Europe left it vulnerable. Leopold knew from history that countries that
expanded were more likely to be stable. For examples, he looked to Rome, Portugal, Spain, and
England. These countries all had colonies outside themselves that helped to support them. However,
there was no place for Belgium to go in Europe. Europe was thoroughly claimed and trying to expand
there would only bring more hardship on Belgium. As Leopold wrote in his diary, We must raise the
question of national expansion...Belgium will choose between the development, work, wealth, and
power that brings security, or live ....at the mercy of foreign powers. So, Leopold sought the continent

The History of Metallica Essay
The History of Metallica
As the nineteen seventies came to a close so did many of the musical styles of that decade. While
some faced what seemed to be extinction others went through a sort of evolutionary process. The
bands that were at the top of the heavy metal ladder during this time were such acts as Motorhead,
Iron Maiden, and Tygers of Pan Tang. These groups would be just some of what the new crop of
heavy metal bands would consider inspirational. This style, which is typically referred to as The New
Wave of British Heavy Metal, would fuel and empower many acts to stardom. (Marshall 3) At around

philosophy. Locke believed that an individual was born with the right and duty to their own life,

obey the law, but trying to overthrow their king would be a violation of the contract. In contrast to

Censorship Of Women In The Media Research Paper
Large breasts have been the ideal standard of female beauty in American society, especially in media
culture. Although the biological role of female breasts is to provide milk while nursing a newborn,
their sexual role of attracting mates or just exuding sexual appeal in general is more pronounced, and
usually the bigger they are, the more attractive a female looks. Some examples of society glorifying
the voluptuous look include: porn; advertisements; the Victoria s Secret Bombshell Bra (designed to

In the novel, The Stranger, author Albert Camus confronts some important issues of the time, and uses
the singular viewpoint of the narrator Meursault to develop his philosophy and effectively weave
together themes of absurdity, colonialism, and free will. Through the progressive disruption of
Meursault s life and his characterization, Camus presents the absurdity of the human condition along
with the understanding that a person can actually be happy in the face of the absurd. Camus also

truth, there are extenuating circumstances for his crime: the preceding scuffle with the man, the

pulling the trigger, and the defensive instinct taking over. But Meursault remains indifferent to murder,

Haunted America by Patricia Nelson
Why acknowledge history? The solution is because we essentially must to achieve access to the
laboratory of human involvement. In the essay Haunted America , Patricia Nelson takes a truly various
and remarkably gallant stance on United States history. Through the recounting of the White/Modoc
war in Haunted America, she brings to light the complexity and confusion of the White/Indian
conflicts that is often missing in much of the history we read. Her account of the war, with the faults
of both Whites and Indians revealed, is an unusual alternative to the stereotypical Whites were good;
Indians were bad or the reverse stand point that Indians were good; Whites were bad conclusions that
many historians reach. Limerick argues that a very brutal and bloody era has been simplified and
romanticized, reducing the lives and deaths of hundreds to the telling of an uncomplicated story of
Good Guys and Bad Guys . Additionally, Limerick lays forth a challenge to the cheerful remarks
about how the understanding of history will help us to understand ourselves and to cope with the
dilemmas we have inherited from the past (412); this challenge is to find out what. By remembering
these stories in their full intensity and completeness, what do we gain besides a revival and restoration
of the misery? The following paragraphs will clarify what is missing in much of our history and why it
is a problem; they will also address the challenge put forth of what we can possibly learn

I would like for them to make sure this does not happen often since it leaves patients being unhappy.
In order to fix this there can be more staff just making sure the system is updated since there are
different physicians as well as many patients assigned to each of these doctors. Lastly, id likes to
eliminate some of the paper work still. I know it is hard to get rid of paper but I feel that loads of
paper is being wasted here. I notice that a lot of elderly people come to this center and have not been
up to date with technology and this is where the paper work comes in. I would like to promote the
access of patients to there own health record online. If they want to see the pictures they can have
access rather then it all being printed. It is not hard for an elderly or any other patient to use this
patient management system on his or her own. Overall, patients getting lost to just finding this center
get them frustrated just the start of their visit and no one would want that. That is why I figured
change could be done

Malcolm X Biography Essay
Throughout history there are many great people who dedicated their life to the advancement of the
African American race. Few of these people created as much controversy during the 1960 s then the
man who would be known as Malcolm X. Unlike many of the civil rights leaders of the time who
promoted non violence, Malcolm X believed in the use of aggressive tactics in his battle for equality.
Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska to Earl and Louise Little.

Malcolm began a life of using and selling drugs, home invading, gambling, as well as wearing flashy
clothing. He moved to Harlem in 1942 and continued his rise in the criminal world, becoming known
as Detroit Red for his reddish brown hair. When the authorities became aware of his illegal activities
he returned to Boston. Four years later at the age of twenty, Malcolm was arrested and sentenced to
ten years in prison for burglary. It would be the time spent in prison that would transform Malcolm
and change him from a career criminal to the activist he would later be known as. He visited the
prison library and read books on religion, philosophy, and history. He read and copied the entire
dictionary acquiring the skills that would make him a powerful public speaker. He dedicated his time
in prison to his own personal development and through his brother Reginald learned of the
organization known as the Nation of Islam or the Black Muslims. The Nation of Islam is an Islamic
religious organization founded by its leader Elijah Muhammad which promoted Black separatism
from whites culturally, physically, politically and psychologically. Malcolm began to follow the
preachings of Muhammad and practiced the religion devoutly, giving up drug use, alcohol
consumption, as well as eating pork. Upon his release from prison in 1952 Malcolm traveled to
Chicago, Illinois to meet with Elijah Muhammad. Muhammad accepted

god states his point that such a person like job can indeed keep , and points out his follower job as an
example .

The focus will be on the strengths and weakness of first, second, and fourth commandment, as well as a which commandment should be rewritten for the 21st century Christian. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government interference. The Freedom of Expression consisted of the rights to freedom of speech, press, assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and belief. The particular goals that could be extracted for these patients may include helping older adults reach closure and improving their qualities of life. Through life reviews, an older adult is able to experience increased socialization and connectedness with others. It also provides cognitive stimulation, improves communication, and can significantly decrease depression (Touhy amp; Jett, 2012, p. 100). Though life review and ordinary remembering seem synonymous, the two share very compelling and diverse similarities and differences. Life review and ordinary remembering are similar in that they both deal with recollections of the past from the onset of adolescence. The pivotal difference is that a life review takes a further step and helps the older adult recollect past memories by search for meaning within each experience and tapping into the emotions of those experiences. Ordinary remembering refers to a more informal and objective recollection of past experiences, while life review is the more formal, structural, and subjective examination of past ... When discussing the phenomenon of a popular culture item reflecting the sentiments of a nation, one should not uncritically equal the superhero with America. Despite the fact that the superhero can be said to typify the national character that is particularly America (Reynolds, 1992, 18), one ought to be aware that the qualities and ideals anticipated on to the hero are usually those of the dominant, hegemonic culture, whereas the villains usually possess those qualities which the hegemonic culture views as undesirable. This is a typical narrative in well known fiction, discussed in several comics for example Muslim Girl and the Green Lantern Corps, where the hero is given all the positive social values while the villain portrays the negative social vices for example racism and sexism. This archetyping is important since racism has been a common vice in the American society. The Genius Of The Constitution Tyranny The Genius of the American Constitution Since the advent of human government, one of the principle fears held by the constituents of the government has always been to prevent any form of tyranny or abuse within it. Tyranny can be loosely described as one person or a group of people having total power in a government leading to the subjugation and oppression of people s rights. Many new nations wish to eliminate any aspect of their government that may eventually lead to tyranny. James Madison in Federalist Paper #51 writes Hence a double security arises to the rights of the people. The different governments will each control each other, at the same time that each will be controlled by itself. This idea of Federalism allows the governments to be supervised by the others while having control over itself. The powers of the government are spilt between the central and state government so neither government could gain more power over the other. The powers that state governments have are more specific to the state then the powers given to the central government. For example, states were given the powers to pass marriage and divorce laws, establish schools, set up local governments among others because these issues differ largely from state to state. Hence, it would make it illogical to give the central government these types of rights because these issues vary from state to state making it an act of tyranny by the majority against the minority. (Document A) The framers of the Constitution recognized that if one person or a group of individuals gets all the powers, tyranny was inevitable and to prevent this it became evident that a separation of powers must be established. Karl Marx certainly left a mark on the world, but whether his impact was revolutionary or simply detrimental is up to debate. Marx was largely influenced by the ideas of Enlightenment figures like Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and Hegel. Most know him in regard to his writing the Communist Manifesto and its influence on revolutions that led to the formation of notoriously oppressive communist states. His ideas form the base of modern international communism, and for that Michael Hart gives Karl Marx a ranking of twenty seven in his book The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History. Karl Marx drew from the philosophies of the great thinkers of his time to perfect his ideal communist system. He was born into a time when ideas of the Enlightenment were widespread. He read the works of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and the Comte de Saint Simon (Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia). However, he was especially influenced by G.W.F. Hegel, the most prominent philosopher in Germany in the early 1800s (Microsoft Encarta). Forgiving oneself or forgiving others proves to be a hard battle to conquer. As you view throughout the movie the changes that take place in each character, think about yourself and what feats you have overcome with anger and forgiveness. The main characters in the film include Arnold Joseph, Victor Joseph, Thomas Builds the fire, and Suzy Song. There are multiple areas within the film where offering forgiveness would hold the key to finding inner peace, the question is do any of the characters actually reach inner peace? Arnold Joseph battles within his own conscience throughout the film and it isn t obvious whether he ever forgives himself for what he did. Victor Joseph goes through life with a lot of anger towards his father, Arnold. He struggles to forgive him for abandoning him as a child, for his alcoholism, and the physical abuse him and his mother were subjected to. Victor also shows anger towards Thomas Builds the fire because of their differing views of Arnold Joseph. The only one who doesn t express anger and is very forgiving is Thomas Builds the fire. He of all people has a right to be angry, after all, he has lost the most at the hands of another, whether on purpose or by accident. But, he goes through life as a happy go lucky person, an imaginative storyteller, and above all a caring individual to others. Educator s today are faced with many obstacles in order to meet the academic and emotional needs of all students in their classroom. The shift toward single grade classes with a single teacher educational model was established and remains prominent today (Roe, 2009). Looping is a practice where the teacher remains with the same students for more than two or more years. Looping provides the potential for both academic and social benefits for students. (Eric Digest) The additional time allows educators to provide students a sense of stability, an expanded curriculum that builds upon previous learning experiences and prior background knowledge, and the time to build and maintain strong interpersonal relationships and a sense of community (Kerry Roe, 2009). The idea behind looping is to avoid student anonymity by creating a longer term relationship between the students and their teacher in a learning community. So why not intrigue students by bringing it into the classroom? There is a lot of benefits to having music in the classroom and it helps students expand on their knowledge. However, to bring it into the classroom a teacher needs to acknowledge how children learn. There is a multitude of research on children s brain development. It encourages a loving environment and it replaces the authority of strict discipline. Furthermore, Pestalozzi was inspired and expanded on Jean Jacques Rousseau s findings. Animals pretty much are different from animals involving emotion they may seem as if they love their toys or the food that their owner gives them and even the owner but animals don t have a sense of understanding on what love is. People on the other hand feel as if they have a understanding of the word love but do they really have an actual meaning of what love or to feel what love is. Is love just a made up English word that no one knows about or is it an emotion that everyone can feel. I personally feel as if I know what love is. For example, I know that I love my mom and when I see my mother and father I know they love each other that s why they got married. But, as I read the passage on love in Erich Fromm s book To Have Or To Be looking from a philosopher s perspective on it has a whole different meaning on the understanding of what people may know what love truly means. • 31. Korsgaard Intentionality In Morality and the Distinctiveness of Human Action , Korsgaard does not agree with the veneer theory and proposes that human beings are originally acquisitive, but they become moral beings through the process of living and growing up under the circumstance of society. In this paper, I will defend this argument. I will first explain in detail what self government is and why it is the most important to human morality. Then I address two opposing arguments. The first one challenges the theory of deepest level of intentionality , and the second one used the example of children to attack the self government theory. I will point out the weaknesses of these arguments to show the validity of Korsgaard s theory. Korsgaard introduces the deepest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They claim that her argument fails to explain the case of children, who are not completely, but only partially responsible for their behaviours and actions. In this case when children might do wrong and held not responsible for their action since they are underaged, we could not draw the conclusion that all human beings have the capacity for self government. However, I do not agree with this view. Admittingly children do have limited responsibility, and people hold more lenient standard when judging their behaviours, it does not imply children, as a subgroup of human beings, does not have the capacity for self government or deepest level of intentionality. For grown ups, the reason why we believe they have the deepest level of intentionality is because, they have the ability to adopt their purposes. Adopting their purposes requires human beings to judge the person will need to judge which purpose is morally justifiable, despite there is a urgent and strong affective state affecting his emotions and feelings. The ability to judge plays a significant role in the self government process. However, it should be noted that, such ability is gained through the process of growing under the context of society, learning what is moral and immoral, acquiring skills of judging rights and wrongs by observing the society around us and interacting with other human beings. It is trained from the moment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Political Nature Of Europe When King Leopold II of Belgium took the throne, he began looking for somewhere that the people of Belgium could colonize, not necessarily to live there, but to offer its economic support to the kingdom. However, the political nature of Europe meant that Belgium would need to look overseas for stability. Thus, Leopold sought a colony for Belgium in Africa, namely the Congo. Throughout the time that Leopold managed this colony, he used a variety of methods to try and convince this people that the imperializing of the Congo was a good thing and helpful to Belgium as well as needful for the people of the Congo. However, the realities of what truly happened in the Congo still leaked out for all to see. At the time that Leopold took the throne of Belgium, the country had only been free since 1830. It s position in Europe left it vulnerable. Leopold knew from history that countries that expanded were more likely to be stable. For examples, he looked to Rome, Portugal, Spain, and England. These countries all had colonies outside themselves that helped to support them. However, there was no place for Belgium to go in Europe. Europe was thoroughly claimed and trying to expand there would only bring more hardship on Belgium. As Leopold wrote in his diary, We must raise the question of national expansion...Belgium will choose between the development, work, wealth, and power that brings security, or live ....at the mercy of foreign powers. • 34. The History of Metallica Essay The History of Metallica As the nineteen seventies came to a close so did many of the musical styles of that decade. While some faced what seemed to be extinction others went through a sort of evolutionary process. The bands that were at the top of the heavy metal ladder during this time were such acts as Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and Tygers of Pan Tang. These groups would be just some of what the new crop of heavy metal bands would consider inspirational. This style, which is typically referred to as The New Wave of British Heavy Metal, would fuel and empower many acts to stardom. He pretty much guaranteed Lars a spot on his project if Lars could form a band. Lars got the information back to James and so they decided to give it a try. Locke believed that an individual was born with the right and duty to their own life, including their property. His idea based off of natural rights has become what he is most commonly recognized for in politics. Much like Locke s belief in natural rights, he also believed in the social contract theory. The social contract theory is the agreement among people in a society to cooperate in order to receive social benefits. The government could only be a legitimate government with the consent of the people that it governs, along with their agreement to obey its laws (Thompson, Bruce E.R. social contract theory. ) If the citizens obey the rules of its government, then the government should protect their natural rights such as their freedom of speech, equality, and property. Locke s social contract theory became one of the ideas that capital punishment was founded off of, however, he was not the only enlightened thinker to have this theory. Both John Locke and Thomas Hobbes believed in the social contract theory, but they had conflicting ideas. Hobbes believed in an absolute monarchy, a form of government in which Locke was greatly opposed to, and that the people must obey the law, but trying to overthrow their king would be a violation of the contract. Although the biological role of female breasts is to provide milk while nursing a newborn, their sexual role of attracting mates or just exuding sexual appeal in general is more pronounced, and usually the bigger they are, the more attractive a female looks. Some examples of society glorifying the voluptuous look include: porn; advertisements; the Victoria s Secret Bombshell Bra (designed to make your boobs look two sizes larger); production of tighter, body hugging clothing and tops with plunging necklines (only looks good if you have something to show); movies/TV shows with the trite clichĂ© of comparing the flat chested, timid nerd ... In my opinion, I can see the feminist cause behind this campaign and how ridiculous it is that breasts have become taboo in society, however I don t think walking around shirtless to promote the normalcy of breasts will do much of anything because no matter what breasts will forever be considered sexual and shameful. If a group of shirtless women walked up my block, I wouldn t be bothered because boobs are boobs, but I know a lot of people who feel uncomfortable and look away, or even worse start ridiculing the women, because many are brought up like that; at a young age, we are conditioned to think female breasts should be concealed. Three Themes in the Stranger by Albert Camus Essay TROIS THEMES DANS L ETRANGER D ALBERT CAMUS In the novel, The Stranger, author Albert Camus confronts some important issues of the time, and uses the singular viewpoint of the narrator Meursault to develop his philosophy and effectively weave together themes of absurdity, colonialism, and free will. Through the progressive disruption of Meursault s life and his characterization, Camus presents the absurdity of the human condition along with the understanding that a person can actually be happy in the face of the absurd. Camus also intentionally sets the story in the colonized country of Algeria, and hints at the racial tensions that exist between French Algerians and Arabs. ... In truth, there are extenuating circumstances for his crime: the preceding scuffle with the man, the beginning of sunstroke, the lack of premeditation, the consumption of wine, the reflex action of pulling the trigger, and the defensive instinct taking over. But Meursault remains indifferent to murder, and fails to defend himself. Ironically, he is convicted as much for his psychological indifference, his selfish and anti social behavior, and his lack of mourning for his mother, as for his actual crime. Somehow, when the prosecution was asked: est it accuse d avoir enterre sa mere ou d avoir tue un homme? it was perfectly acceptable to assert: j accuse cet homme d avoir enterre une mere avec un coeur de criminal. (pg.47) What is equally absurd is that Meursault remains passive and detached over the course of a year of interrogations, and despite the pessimistic nature of his situation, he is able to feel a sense of comfort and belonging within the system trying to condemn him. Ironically, those witness testimonies that sought to free him prove to be the most damaging, and the religious people who surround him and purport to love all men unconditionally persecute him for his lack of belief. • 38. Haunted America by Patricia Nelson Why acknowledge history? The solution is because we essentially must to achieve access to the laboratory of human involvement. In the essay Haunted America , Patricia Nelson takes a truly various and remarkably gallant stance on United States history. Through the recounting of the White/Modoc war in Haunted America, she brings to light the complexity and confusion of the White/Indian conflicts that is often missing in much of the history we read. Her account of the war, with the faults of both Whites and Indians revealed, is an unusual alternative to the stereotypical Whites were good; Indians were bad or the reverse stand point that Indians were good; Whites were bad conclusions that many historians reach. Limerick argues that a very brutal and bloody era has been simplified and romanticized, reducing the lives and deaths of hundreds to the telling of an uncomplicated story of Good Guys and Bad Guys . Additionally, Limerick lays forth a challenge to the cheerful remarks about how the understanding of history will help us to understand ourselves and to cope with the dilemmas we have inherited from the past (412); this challenge is to find out what. By remembering these stories in their full intensity and completeness, what do we gain besides a revival and restoration of the misery? The following paragraphs will clarify what is missing in much of our history and why it is a problem; they will also address the challenge put forth of what we can possibly learn ...
