Three Ways To Replace A Roof
Three Ways to Know That Your Roof Needs to Be Replaced
As your house ages, signs of wear can become evident, especially where the roof is concerned.
Weather elements such as wind, rain and even the UV rays from the sun cause signs of wear to show
up on the roof. When is it time not to repair a roof, but to replace it? Below are three ways to
determine the answer to this question.
1. The Age of the Roof
Roofs with asphalt shingles only last about 20 to 25 years and at times, less depending on the quality
of the shingle and the install. If your roof is approaching this age range, it is time to consider replacing
it with a new one rather than just patch jobs to repair the issues. A professional may be able to apply
the new roof on top of the

I Was The Most Amazing Woman
I never thought I was the type of person to succeed, let alone thrive in college. That term is utilized
loosely, but it seems fitting as I notice the significant changes in myself that I had only used to dream
about obtaining. It s difficult to discuss these changes without sounding pompous or self righteous, but
I ve come to find a great joy in reflecting on where I came from and where I stand today. I never
expect to actually attend college let alone fall in love with a university that gave me more than just an
education. My mother had grown very sick and I was too scared to think about moving away from her.
The last five years were spent taking care of her and being there whenever she needed me. I felt like it
was my job to stay. She, however, had a different plan. Being the most amazing woman that my
mother is, she wouldn t take no for an answer. For that I am forever grateful. I found a lifetime
organization that would change my life in countless ways, a passion for a career, and a love for
myself. I ended up creating a new chapter in a seemingly hopeless life story that I had the displeasure
to call my own. The day I decided to apply to Eastern Michigan University was the first step I made
towards a happier existence. Eastern was the only college I applied to. I had the pleasure of attending
swim training at Eastern as a young competitive swimmer so campus didn t seem too intimidating. If I
had to find a new place to try to call home, Eastern was the only place I

The Play Our Town
The play Our Town was something so unique and simple, but it somehow found a way to relate with
everyone. Its simplicity seemed to be a hit or miss with many audience members. It was one of those
plays that you relate so much with it you enjoy its minimalistic nature, or you find it too typical and
boring. I happen to be among the group that found this play to be very appealing. I feel that at many
times, little to no scenery and props make it hard to visualize the scene of a play. However, with Our
Town the addition of a stage manager to give an explanation of each scene made up for that entirely.
The stage manager of the play had to be my absolutely favorite character. I found him witty and
expressive. He made his voice emit the right type of sound when articulating his point. Even his facial
expressions matched the mood his character was meant to be in. He fit his character so well that if it
weren t for him, I wouldn t have enjoyed the play as much as I did. As a whole he was a great actor.
He did all the right gestures and made his acting feel so natural. It was like he was having a
conversation with the audience. I think the element of his character is what created a connection with
the play and myself. Another actor that was suitable for his character was the one who played Howie
Newsome, the milkman. His character was very fascinating in how he managed to act along with the
sound effects, and was on time. He was very enthusiastic in his scenes. For example, every

Transcontinental Railroad Thesis
Around the 1840 s, the western land was still fairy new to America with many Americans eager to
expand. Americans became extremely curious, wondering what lies in this forsaken land and
developed the proposal of manifest destiny. The term manifest destiny was a brief way to express
support for American expansion and the annexation of western lands (Mountjoy 12). Americans were
now longing for a path from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast and hoping to fulfill manifest destiny. To
achieve this Asa Whitney proposes the construction of a transcontinental railroad (Streissguth 9). The
transcontinental railroad was designed to link Omaha, Nebraska with Sacramento, California (Stein
105). By creating the transcontinental railroad America would be able to expand across the entire
country and manifest destiny would be fulfilled. After a long process On May 10, 1869 the
transcontinental railroad was complete (Bain 9). Americans had access across the entire United States
and was able to complete manifest destiny. This accomplishment was huge for America and provided
happiness for an abundance of citizens. However, this happiness was not achieved by everyone. Plains
Indians were very agitated upon the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The transcontinental
railroad s tracks ran through a number of tribal territories, bringing into conflict cultures that held very
different views of the land and how it might be used and lived on (Jawort). How were Plains Indians

Andy Goldsworthy Analysis
In the second half of the twentieth century, artistic movements made pushes in order to move beyond
the traditional gallery space, changing the terrain of displaying and making art. An artist s body of
work no longer needed to reside inside of a gallery or art collection, and artists became free to explore
other ways of creating and displaying work. In this vein, Andy Goldsworthy works sculpturally with
natural media, and leaves the sculptures within a particular environment, often expecting his work to
decay quickly. Many times, the only evidence of any art he makes is the photographs taken during the
process. By more traditional standards, art of this nature is entirely contradictory. What is the point of
pieces of visual art that cannot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Goldsworthy had constructed a dome made out of sticks at the edge of a tide pool during low tide,
right next to a river meeting an ocean. This is described further by Jeffrey L. Kosky in his book Arts of
Wonder. There Goldsworthy has gathered driftwood into a dome, with a hole at its top, an echo of the
vortex around which a whirlpool might spin or an eddy might form... before being released into the
rushing flow. (156). After finishing constructing the piece, Goldsworthy steps back to view his piece
and is confronted by a man walking by, who asks after some conversation, What do you expect will
happen?... Will it stay intact? , to which Goldsworthy responds, No it won t, absolutely not. (cite) The
tide begins to pull in, and some of the outer shell of sticks begin to float away. Shortly after though,
the entire piece is picked up at once by the tide, and begins to float above where it was built. After
this, the piece slowly floats away, down the river and away from the camera. Goldsworthy then

The Construction Of Occupational Specialty Codes Essay
On September 29, 2016, the U. S. Navy announced that it would modernize the enlisted ratings of the
Navy. The plan includes the installation of occupational specialty codes. These codes are similar to
those used in the other services. The plan also called for sailors to be referred to by only their rank,
such as Petty Officer First Class. The modernization of the enlisted rating system has caused morale
issues in the fleet, makes job field detailing better, and aligns with the other branches. First, there will
be morale problems in the fleet with the modernization plan. The plan discarded a tradition that goes
back two hundred years to the beginning of the Navy. Rates such as Boatswain s Mate, Gunner s Mate
and Quartermaster have been in use since the start of the Navy (Broderick). They were carried over
from the British Navy which was the used to create the U. S. Navy. Dickstein quoted a sailor saying
about the plan that, It seemed to come out of nowhere without much notice, so a lot of people were
surprised it happened (Dickstein, 2016). Sailors are very protective of their rates, and many have
conveyed anger and confusion with the plan. According to Church, a seaman stated that When you re
a Boatswain s Mate it comes with a lot of pride because of what you do (Church). On whitehouse.gov
there is a petition requesting to have the old rating reinstated. As of two October, the petition had
almost 41,000 signatures. The positive about the change, it will be easier for

A Leading Airline Group With Effective Security Systems...
A leading airline group with effective security systems and culture .
Qantas requires an organisational culture of behaviours that support its security vision, policies and
procedures. With direction from the Board, the airline has embarked on a journey to identify its
current security culture and develop a method to assess and improve the culture going forward. There
is little evidence to suggest that this has been accomplished elsewhere, particularly within aviation,
and the findings will play a key role in Qantas ability to influence regulators. The focus for this project
is on the Australian market and the 65% domestic market share, however there is evidence to suggest
that considerations will also need to be made in the new and growing Asian markets.
Qantas engaged PwC to assist them with this project. PwC consulted some 332 Qantas employees
including Executives to understand the desired future state for security culture, and a cross section of
Middle Management and the Frontline to establish the current state. Findings from Executive
conversations were largely consistent with what emerged as ideas for change from the Middle
Management and Frontline levels. Overarching themes encompassed the need for greater engagement
including collaboration and a clearer understanding as to how security culture fits into the broader
culture, specifically how security supports safety and is aligned to the brand values and desired
organisational behaviours. PwC also engaged an

Essay The Situation for Refugees and Immigrants in the USA
The United States of America has always been a refuge where poor and oppressed people from the far
corners of the world can come to begin a new life. Much of the nation s allure to prospective
immigrants is in its promise of equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, or color. But the
pressures of rising unemployment rates, congested cities, a crippled healthcare system, and national
debt skyrocketing out of control have caused America to defend her borders against the influx of
immigrants that threaten her already ailing economy. Still, despite all the heightened security measures
incorporated in recent decades, a steady stream of immigrants continue to enter the country illegally.
The Washington Times reports that there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This mistrust of American society promotes a sense of isolation and alienation from the community.
Authority figures, such as police and other first responders, may unwittingly strike fear into the hearts
of these children because they have been conditioned to believe that these figures have the power, as
well as the mandate, to destroy families. This mindset tends to discourage assimilation into
mainstream American communities and promote instead the tendency of these families to cluster into
small, ethnically concentrated barrios, or neighborhoods. Within these barrios, the culture and lifestyle
of Mexico is recreated, which often reinforces psychological and physical isolation from mainstream
American culture. Alliances are formed with others in similar circumstances, where commiseration
often leads to a rising sense of resentment. It is not uncommon for angry groups to rise up in
opposition to the society that is viewed as the oppressor. Evidence of this can be seen almost daily as
senseless gang violence permeates our news broadcasts, plagues our communities, and terrorizes our
citizens. Because they do not have the legal right to work in this country, undocumented immigrants
earn very little. Unscrupulous employers are quick to exploit these workers, paying them considerably
less than state minimum wage laws mandate. Thus, immigrant families are forced to live in sub
standard conditions and eek out an

Rite of Passage Ceremony
RITE OF PASSAGE
It is three days before my initiation ceremony. The day Mama says I become a woman. She is really
happy about it and I m supposed to be, but I m not. I have tried to delay this day for as long as
possible, but this year Papa put his foot down. I am already 17 years old and most girls go through the
ceremony at 14. All the girls in my age group have to go through this rite in order to make them
eligible for marriage. No woman in the village can get married without undergoing the rite of passage.
It is part of our tradition and the elders believe it ensures women do not stray from their marital
homes. They also believe you are unclean without it. People were already starting to whisper about me
as I was the last girl in my age group who not gone through it and my friends tease and look down on
me that I am not yet a woman.
My younger brother, Dide cannot be initiated into the Warrior class because he has an older sister who
is uncircumcised. This is the real reason Papa has refused to listen to me any longer. Dide has come of
age and he doesn t want me to delay his initiation. After my initiation ceremony, I would be getting
married. Papa has already someone picked out. I ve seen him a couple of times, my friends think I m
lucky to be getting married into his family. I don t think anything. Going through the initiation
ceremony and getting married would be the end of schooling for me. I know what is expected of me as
a female but I don t like it. When I told

Essay on An Exploration of Vegetarianism
I. Thesis Definition
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the trend of vegetarianism and its steady increase in
popularity in the United States, the possible causes behind the existence of this trend, its effects on our
general society and the practicing population, and finally, the future of vegetarianism. For the purpose
of this paper vegetarianism is described as a plant based diet (fruits, vegetables, etc), though the most
important factor being the total exclusion of meat, not including fish for most practitioners. While
numerous sub levels of this lifestyle exist, including veganism (abstaining from the use of all animal
products) and semi vegetarianism (a person cutting back on meat intake), this study will focus mainly

In 1992, as the medical evidence supporting this lifestyle skyrocketed, the American Dietetic
Association officially endorsed vegetarianism, thus solidifying a prominent argument for the
credibility of the vegetarian diet. From the 1990s to present day, the amount of practitioners has
markedly increased, and appears to be continually growing at a steady rate. According to a 2008 study
conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau on behalf of Vegetarian Times magazine, roughly
3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian based diet. In addition, 22.8
million Americans maintain to follow a vegetarian inclined diet, while 11.9 million are definitely
interested in becoming a vegetarian in the future ( Vegetarianism ). While no concrete evidence of a
current rise yet exists, researchers speculate that, because of new environmental and health concerns,
more people are, and will be, turning to vegetarianism to assist these issues (Rohrer).
III. Causes of Vegetarianism
Environment
Environmental vegetarianism centers on the ever increasing alarm that mass production of meat and
animal products, particularly through factory farming, is environmentally unsustainable. As reported
by a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is ...one of the largest contributors to
environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food

Why is Baylor a good school in medicine than Harvard ? Do you want to go to a good college but not
to expensive and not cheap ? Do you want a good job and go to a college that can help you get that
awesome job or even career ? Also do you want a career in medicine? Well if you said, YES to all
these questions well I suggest that you go to Baylor. Why you ask ? Baylor is not as expensive as most
schools and you can get a good education. Baylor has two schools. College of Medicine and just a

Also, it is good for medicine degrees also. Like I said it is not too cheap and not to expensive like
Harvard . Another reason why Harvard is mostly known for the study of law and it can become very
expensive for a the average person attending college. Attending this school could ruin your financial
plans in the future because you would have to get a lot of student loans. Harvard is more harder to get
in than Baylor. Baylor is like a school for many things. They even have two schools and more
resources. Yet another idea from ,Baylor vs Harvard(2015) is that Harvard has good training for
students.Harvard has higher test scores or MCAT. I understand that Harvard is a good school but it is
very expensive. Also, (for people the live in southwest and south)it is far away. The relative location is
in the upper states Another one of my idea is from Baylor Med school and Harvard is that it gets very
cold in the winter Harvard(29.9*F) Baylor(55.2*F).That is a difference of 25.3 which is more than
19.5 degrees. Also Baylor gets hot in the summer Baylor(84.5*F) Harvard(70.9*F).In difference it is
13.4 which is not that much.Unless you want to

Urban Growth Management and Politics
Urban Growth Management and Politics
Being a urban planner is an exciting career field to work in. There are countless opportunities to create
innovative ideas that can change a struggling city into a beautiful and exciting place for residents and
tourist. However, when it comes to managing urban growth, planning becomes a more complicated
process. Part of the problem is the difficulty in balancing the task of growth management and politics.
Planners must find sensible ways to manage growth while being mindful of the political aspects that
interfere with planning.
Growth management is an important part of urban planning. As defined by John M. Levy, author of
Contemporary Urban Planning, growth management is defines as, ... Show more content on

Many of the proponents for growth management are supportive of the legislation because they believe
in the safe management of their land and resources.
However, there are many not supportive of the legislation of growth management for various reasons
including government control. As quoted in the attitudes toward growth management publication, the
system has also been criticized for placing the state in the role of a command and control entity, rather
than the role of a facilitator and advisor to localities on planning issues (Connerly, 2004). While there
remains to be a great number of supporters for growth management, many Florida residents are not in
support of government intervention. The citizen s stance against too much government control brings
focus on the political aspect of urban planning and growth management.
There are many problems that can arise with an the unmanaged growth of within communities across
the world. According to the works of , Robert F. Durant, Larry W. Thomas, and Don Hayes, authors

This Is Our Life Poem Comparison
Both of the poems mentioned that because of science fiction we are seeing the world differently.
Instead of seeing the real effects of how we are and what we do we see things to be a fantasy. Seeing
how we re not paying attention to the actual surroundings we don t really think about why things
happen. We just see things as normal because it s something we don t really think about. In the first
poem the opening started out with This is not a fantasy, this is our life. Throughout this poem it
mentions that we are the inventors and that we are the people who make the changes with our
surroundings. Being in charge of this gives us an important role on the things that we hold together.
The second poem just speaks about the negative things about this kind of genre because it denies how
things actually are. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the genre is reasonable because it s just like hearing false propaganda. We must be able to see how the
things we can cause and not be told we have nothing to do with everything that is around us. It s a bad
genre and the way it wants to get removed probably won t have a bad effect on people because then

Historical Reality Of The Resurrection Research Paper
The Historical Reality of the Resurrection
There are four main arguments used to deny the historical reality of the Resurrection. In this essay, I
will explain why they are not supported by the facts of the matter
The first main argument is the classic stolen body argument. Obviously this story is fake because there
were usually about 16 roman guards in a patrol, and all of them had different sleep patterns, therefore,
at least one of them must have been awake at all times. Also, the boulder in front of the tomb was
huge, and there s no way the apostles could move it without waking up the roman guards.
The second main argument is that Jesus did not die, but actually faked his death. Clearly this is false
because the Romans and perfected

The concept of variable valve timing has existed for some time. Unfortunately, the ability to achieve
truly variable valve timing has eluded automotive manufacturers. Most variable timing mechanisms
were created as tools for the automotive engineer. Their use was limited to the laboratory as a means
of testing multiple, virtual cam profiles. These early camless engines allowed for the designers to
choose the best cams for the engine under scrutiny, but were less than energy efficient. Furthermore,
they were laboratory machines and were not capable of being mass produced or utilized in an
automobile. There have been a few attempts at developing production models of camless engines,
most notably by Ford, but the use of solenoids has impeded their implementation. Using solenoids to
control hydraulic fluid and ultimately the opening and closing of the engine valves introduces its own
limitations. The solenoids consume considerable energy and are a binary control device they are either
on or off. Therefore the hydraulic fluid, controlled

Automobile manufacturers have recognized the compromises associated with
by the solenoids, is either flowing or blocked. This design allows for some variance of valve timing,
but is still limited by the response capabilities of the solenoids. Furthermore, it cannot directly address
valve velocity or displacement changes.

Analysis Of The Book Redeployment By Phil Klay Essay
In the United States, thousands of men and woman join the army every year. Post war trauma effects
can influence the emotional and psychological state of the soldier when coming back from combat or
reentering civilian life, however, people are not fully aware of such problem. Winner of the 2014
National Book Award for fiction, Phil Klay in his first book Redeployment, delivers readers a unique
experience to the front lines of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq through the narratives of different
characters and their experiences. The first chapter Redeployment exposes the life of a soldier
reentering civilian life, who takes action for the life of his suffering dog Vicar after killing hundreds of
dogs during the war while having to address his post war emotional and psychological state. The last
chapter of Redeployment, Ten Kliks South, a Lance Corporal gives the readers an insight of his
emotional and psychological state after a mass shooting on a nearby location. In consequence of his
lack of experience in the battlefield, the Lance Corporal is faced with several questions, while
searching for the true responsible for the fatalities caused by the U.S. soldiers. Both chapters
demonstrate a connection as they portray the effects of the war on the emotional and psychological
state of the main characters of the two chapters discussed. Such stories help bring awareness to the
readers about the importance in understanding how situations can affect the life of soldiers in real life,

Global Business Barriers
Global business is defined as the buying and selling of goods and services by people from different
countries (McWilliams Williams 2010). It also has to do with international trade and trade agreements.
Corporations that own businesses in two or more countries are called multinational corporations
(McWilliams Williams 2010). Most of these global businesses main headquarters are found in the
United States or the United Kingdom. Expanding to a global market is quite a complex process and
businesses have to take many different aspects into account such as: social/cultural, legal, political,
economic, environmental and technological factors. These components help create an attractive
business climate. Different businesses operate differently to assess these relevant factors. Strict Import
export rules and regulations also need to be followed. Entering the global market also allows for larger
competition between other similar businesses and to create trade agreements. There are many rules
and regulations when entering into the global market and with each country having different
requirements you must fulfil. These must be followed or the business cannot enter into business in that
country. Global businesses have trade barriers, which are government imposed regulations that
increase the cost and restrict the number of imported goods (McWilliams Williams 2010). Different
types of trade barriers include tariff and also non tariff barriers such as: quotas, voluntary

Argentina possible. Eva Peron Mi vida por Peron! ( My life for Peron! ) [Evita] cried a thousand times

She also continued her work in the Secretariat for no salary. Her only earnings were the love and
affection from Peron and the Argentine people (Peron 125). On June 19, 1948, Evita founded the
Maria Eva Duarte de Peron Foundation, or EPF. This foundation was created to provide national
safety where the government was weak (To Be II). The Foundation s work was necessary in the lower
class areas of the country, rather than in the cities. Eva believed that the descamisados were the base,
the foundation, of the revolution. They were an essential part of the country s people (Peron 80). The
Social Help Crusade created housing and neighborhoods that were affordable for the poor. The
crusade also created jobs for the unemployed and school food programs. It provided inexpensive

The Eva Peron Hospital Train, which provided free check ups, vaccinations, x rays, and general
medical care to people who either did not have access to hospitals or who could not afford a visit to

built with the same objective as the Hospital Train. These hospitals attracted the best doctor in the

Ancient Greek Influence On Ancient Rome
There are many Greek myths that were altered or redirected to serve the state of Rome. For instance,
Roman culture borrowed elements of government, religion, and lifestyle. Etruscans were also an
important conduit of Greek influence on Early Rome. In addition, Roman myth is heavily patriarchal,
befitting a society where the male head of the household had the power of life and death over
everyone. The Romans also, culturally inferior to the Greeks adopted Greek literature and mythology
by just changing names and adapting the concepts to fit their ideas and values. In addition, many gods
are believed to have taken part in the founding of Rome. All of the gods were consulted and honored
to make sure that the actions of the state met with divine

Rate Law Lab Report
Discussion Since the rate law was determined to be first order, as seen in equation 2, the rate of
reaction, the rate at which the concentrations of the reactants decrease, was linear. Which means the
reaction depends linearly on only the concentration of bleach. This experimental rate law was the
same as the literature rate law for the bleaching reaction between green dye and cetylpyridinum
chloride, with first order dependence on the bleaching compound cetylpyridinum chloride. Even if the
literature reaction was not parallel to the one studied in this report, it still served as an adequate model
reaction for comparison.3 Therefore, the experimental rate law processes some degree of accuracy.

Hercules Greek Culture
The are two different versions of Hercules: the mythicical version of ancient Greece and the more
modern version of the Once Upon a Time television series; the mythic Hercules, thought self assured,
presents an unrelatable hero, while the television Hercules with his flaws and uncertainties offers a
more achievable hero figure.
Throughout time are culture has changed to fit the society we current live in where it includes the

The Hercules of ancient Greece was a figure to admire. He was an idol to those who worshipped him
for his strength, dedication, and bravery. He was a very egotistical man who relied heavily on his
strength to get by. This was a man filled with vanity and a hint of selfishness. The new Hercules from
the television show was a man with doubts, insecurities, and lost hopes. He lost his confidence and
had a terribly difficult time trying to find him in the process. This Hercules is appropriate for this time
because of the issues that have come up in the news. This is appropriate because of the issues
addressed in the media and emphasis placed on basic human flaws. Both Hercules are important to
recognize because of the different traits they have. They are both strong in two completely different
ways. One relies on his strength and the other on his soul and this is a combination that is unbeatable.
I must say that I do have a preference with the more modern Hercules because of his ability, his
strength, to be vulnerable and accept the help from others, which is very difficult to do for any

White Noise Religion
Don DeLillo s novel White Noise explores the relativity of religion in the modern world by
conceiving a world in which religion is entirely changed. Traditional aspects of religion, specifically
Christianity, are rarely, if at all, present in this novel. Does DeLillo believe that religion is relativity in
our modern society? Or is he pushing the boundaries by creating a distorted reality in which American
culture is the primary religion? This question is initially exemplified in White Noise when it states: It s
not what I believe that counts. It s what you believe (318). This paper will analyze White Noise s
introduction and examination into religion; in an attempt uncover an answer to the question, is
American culture the only relative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jack distances himself from traditional religion when he states: Watching children sleep makes me feel
devout, part of a spiritual system. It is the closest I can come to God (141). By stating this, Jack
identities traditional religion as an obscure practice that he has no access to. Modern society proves
not only unconquerable but also unconditionally opposed to the practices and ideals of traditional
religion, which encourages humans that it is possible to believe in a higher power. Even the clergy,
who are supposedly the most devout followers of religion, only pretend to believe. In turn, the clergy s
acceptance of religion exaggerates and evolves into a form of resigned impersonation. This notion
becomes evident when Jack discusses religion with Sister Hermann Marie: To abandon such beliefs
completely, the human race would die. This is why we are here. A tiny minority. To embody old
things, old beliefs... If we did not pretend to believe these things, the world would collapse (318). Jack
s absurd encounters with the clergy, illustrate DeLillo perspective that traditional is a laughable
illusion. Religion is no longer seen as something revered and adored. Even the clergy s connection to
God is not highly emphasized; there is a clear gap between traditional religion and its relativity in our

Hurricane Katrina Problems
Natural disasters are devastating and affect everyone where they hit, but they particularly affect racial
minorities and those who fall below the poverty line. Without resources or money to rebuild, the
impoverished and minorities are forced to figure out their own plan to recover from the natural
disaster. Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana and caused a myriad of issues with its
residents. Some of the problems the impoverished and minorities faced were: evacuating New

the city s population suffered some sort of loss whether it was a fatality, loss of property, or a lack of

underprivileged and racial minorities suffered much greater losses than those who had the resources or

Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition Essay example
Economic and Social Effects of Prohibition
There are many ways in which prohibition of alcohol consumption in the United States of
America, damaged the very economic and social aspects of American culture, that it was designed to
heal.
Prohibition did not achieve its goals. Instead, it added to the problems it was intended to solve. On
16th January 1920, one of the most common personal habits and customs of American society came to
a halt. The eighteenth amendment was implemented, making all importing, exporting, transporting,
selling and manufacturing of intoxicating liquors absolutely prohibited. This law was created in the
hope of achieving the reduction of alcohol consumption, which in turn would reduce: crime, poverty,

As a result of this new law, a new social problem arose. Seldom has law been more flagrantly violated.
Not only did Americans continue to manufacture, barter, and possess alcohol; they drank more of it.
Americans who supported prohibition, argued that if drinking alcohol was illegal, the public would
recognize and respect the law, and in turn, would give it up. During the start of prohibition, it appeared
as though it was working. But, what was really going on, was that since the transportation and
production was not allowed, bootleggers had to find ways to do it without being caught. The price of
beer rose, because it had to be transported in large barrels, which was more difficult. As a result,
people started drinking more potent hard liquor. It took less to get drunk, therefore it was easier to
transport, thus, it was cheaper. Americans would drink this potent liquor and get drunk a lot faster, for
less money. As a downfall, however, the liquor had no standards. The rate of alcohol related deaths
due to poisoning drastically increased from 1,064 in 1920, to 4,154 in 1925.
One of the biggest outcomes of prohibition was the development of organized crime.
Because liquor was no longer legally available, the public turned to gangsters who took on the
bootlegging industry and supplied them with liquor. Because the industry was so immensely
profitable, more gangs participated. As a result of the money involved in the bootlegging industry,
there was much

Summary Of Success Is Counted Sweetest By Emily Dickinson
The poem, Success is counted sweetest, by Emily Dickinson, portrays success as something that only
those who have never obtained it can truly comprehend its value. The writer makes this apparent in the

writes a poem that relays the emotions of those who understand defeat. In the opening lines of the

Strengths And Weaknesses Of The NFL
The strengths of the National Football League or NFL are rooted deep in the fabric of America. There
is an undeniable tribal nature to the sport of American Football. All across the country devoted
fanatics cheer on their teams may they be unpaid college students or millionaire household names.
Football is not just a sport in America, it is cherished, tattooed and celebrated. The NFL benefits from
having football being a common conversation point in schools and workplaces. From fantasy football
leagues to highly intricate betting in Las Vegas. There is not just passion, but dollars and time being
invested by the end consumer. The NFL saturates Thanksgiving television, it s players are often
celebrities, its story lines are on the tip the American male. Knowing the game of football is often a
rite of passage. Football is American tradition. The NFL clearly has it s place in American culture. It is
evident in the outpouring of corporate sponsors into the league. Companies recognize the visibility
NFL players offer to their products and the NFL leverages that back into its brand. All aspects
surrounding the sport are sponsored. From the sports drink the players slurp then dump on their
coaches after victories to the on the field tablets branded with the iconic window for drawing up plays.
The jerseys, cleats, gloves, hats, helmets, pads and that is just on the field. There s food, cars, watches,
headphones it seems everything that scrapes past the NFL becomes sponsored in some way. Backing
from the NFL appears to currently have exponential upside increasing brand awareness.
The National Football League has made many people rich, but it is not short of problems, controversy
and appauling storylines. The two weaknesses I can identify are issues in player discipline and player
health. The NFL is inconsistent in how it disciplines its players. Some have reframed this as an league

The Importance Of Growth In Human Growth
Human growth relies on both genetics and environment to reach an optimal fitness that is
advantageous for productive reproduction. Growth refers to increase in physical size that is
measurable. Stature is one kind of growth that is complex to understand as both human variation as
well as secular trends can affect stature. Secular trends are shifts within a measurable time period that
can affect humans. For example, past the industrial revolution, humans began to increase in size and
also experienced earlier maturation. Specifically, in the article by Pes et al., A secular trend in body
height, namely its progressive increase over more than a century has also be documented in the
Sardinian population, (Pes et al., 5). The measureable amount of time is not the only note for change,
as several factors can influence growth that include: genetics, economic status, culture, ecology,
nutrition, disease, as well as stress. A few of these factors are discussed in Pes s article.
The subject of nutrition was a factor of body height increase, since the increase in height was,
...caused by the increase in limb length rather than trunk length, which strengthens further the
suggested influence of environmental and/or nutritional factors, (Pes et al., 5). The article further
explains that short legs are an indication of poor prepubertal nutrition (Pes et al., 5). Another secular

When conducting the S_N 1 portion of the experiment, the solvent used was 1% silver nitrate in

for an S_N 1 reaction because the hydrogen atom is positively charged while the nucleophile is

S_N 1 are stability of the carbocation and the leaving group departure. The more stable the
carbocation, the faster the reaction generates and the better the leaving group, it creates a carbocation
faster, which in turn leads to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The following six of the nine alkyl halides produced precipitates at room temperature: 2 bromobutane,
t butyl chloride, crotyl chloride, bromocyclohexane, bromocyclopentane, and benzyl chloride. All of
these alkyl halides reacted in room temperature because they were either secondary or tertiary carbons
except for crotyl chloride. These types of structures (tertiary) are favored in the case of S_N 1 while
secondary can undergo either S_N 1 or S_N 2. The only primary carbon that reacted quickly was
crotyl chloride because it is an allylic substrate, which can undergo S_N 1. On the other hand the three
remaining alkyl halides did not react at room temperature: 1 chlorobutane, 2 chlorobutane, and
bromobenzene. These three alkyl halides were then heated at 80℃. 1 chlorobutane s alpha carbon is
primary, so heat is needed in order to create more collision resulting in a reaction. 2 chlorobutane and
2 bromobutane have similar structures, but the latter reacted in room temperature because Br is a
better leaving group than Cl. Lastly, bromobenzene did not react even after adding heat

Chicago Bulls Case Study
Many blockbuster trade rumors are being speculated the past few months. Rumors that include
superstar and marquee players on a well known team. Although most of them didn t happen but still
gossip on trades will never stop until it satisfies the fans.
On recent trade rumors, one veteran big man is likely going to leave his first home. Brook Lopez is an
eight year veteran player who was the 10th overall pick by the New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn Nets)
in the 2008 NBA draft. He has a twin brother Robin Lopez who was just recently traded to the New
York Knicks to the Chicago Bulls this offseason. And now, the same fate might happen to Brook.
According to Parent Herald, the Nets will send Lopez to Chicago Bulls and in return, they will get
Nikola Mirotic, Denzel Valentine, and Bobby Portis as part of the agreement. It was also hinted that
the trade deal is already set and just waiting for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It can also boost the offensive and defensive side of the Bulls as Lopez is averaging 20.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg,
and 1.7 bpg last season.
On an earlier report by YIBADA English, there is three trade scenario for Brook Lopez. First, with the
Chicago Bulls which we ve already tackled. Second with the Milwaukee Bucks. Trade scenario is
suggesting to send Lopez to the Bucks in exchange for Greg Monroe and Michael Carter Williams.
And lastly with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics must give up future draft picks, Terry Rozier or James
Young, and Amir Johnson to acquire Lopez.
Many say that the trade scenario to the Chicago Bulls is more feasible than the others as it would
likely place Lopez on a more contender team and will be utilized more. Will Brook Lopez fit in the
Bulls system once the trade pushes thru? Will his transfer to Bulls will established him as a superstar?
Can it also be a reunion with his twin brother Robin in the Windy

A keyword (hashtag) used tweets
The best way to separate a tweet s topic into categories and to search for other tweets about these
topics is to use a hashtag. It is necessary to put the pound sign (#) before the word or phrase without
using any spaces or punctuation to create a hashtag. When a hashtag is tweeted, it automatically
becomes a clickable link that if somebody clicks on that, he is directed to a page which includes all the
most recent tweets that contain that specific hashtag. For example, if #newcastleUniversity or
#NewcastleUniversity is typed in the search box at the top of the Twitter page, all tweets under the
newcastleuniversity title are displayed because there is no case sensitivity.
A tweet about using keyword (hashtag) is shown in Figure 17.
Figure 17 An example tweet about Newcastle University
Geo tagged tweets
Users can add a general location information, such as Istanbul, Newcastle Upon Tyne, to their tweets
thanks to Twitter s Tweet with Your Location feature. In addition to this, users tweet at the exact
geographic location coordinates of their tweeted location by using some applications. A tweet tweeted
at the Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul, Turkey is shown in Figure 17. Also the information about
location of some cities are as follows (Latlong, 2017):
Latitude and longitude coordinates for Turkey: 38.963745, 35.243322.

  • 2. Three Ways To Replace A Roof Three Ways to Know That Your Roof Needs to Be Replaced As your house ages, signs of wear can become evident, especially where the roof is concerned. Weather elements such as wind, rain and even the UV rays from the sun cause signs of wear to show up on the roof. When is it time not to repair a roof, but to replace it? Below are three ways to determine the answer to this question. 1. The Age of the Roof Roofs with asphalt shingles only last about 20 to 25 years and at times, less depending on the quality of the shingle and the install. If your roof is approaching this age range, it is time to consider replacing it with a new one rather than just patch jobs to repair the issues. • 3. I Was The Most Amazing Woman I never thought I was the type of person to succeed, let alone thrive in college. That term is utilized loosely, but it seems fitting as I notice the significant changes in myself that I had only used to dream about obtaining. It s difficult to discuss these changes without sounding pompous or self righteous, but I ve come to find a great joy in reflecting on where I came from and where I stand today. I never expect to actually attend college let alone fall in love with a university that gave me more than just an education. My mother had grown very sick and I was too scared to think about moving away from her. The last five years were spent taking care of her and being there whenever she needed me. I felt like it was my job to stay. She, however, had a different plan. Being the most amazing woman that my mother is, she wouldn t take no for an answer. For that I am forever grateful. I found a lifetime organization that would change my life in countless ways, a passion for a career, and a love for myself. I ended up creating a new chapter in a seemingly hopeless life story that I had the displeasure to call my own. The day I decided to apply to Eastern Michigan University was the first step I made towards a happier existence. Eastern was the only college I applied to. I had the pleasure of attending swim training at Eastern as a young competitive swimmer so campus didn t seem too intimidating. • 4. The Play Our Town The play Our Town was something so unique and simple, but it somehow found a way to relate with everyone. Its simplicity seemed to be a hit or miss with many audience members. It was one of those plays that you relate so much with it you enjoy its minimalistic nature, or you find it too typical and boring. I happen to be among the group that found this play to be very appealing. I feel that at many times, little to no scenery and props make it hard to visualize the scene of a play. However, with Our Town the addition of a stage manager to give an explanation of each scene made up for that entirely. The stage manager of the play had to be my absolutely favorite character. I found him witty and expressive. He made his voice emit the right type of sound when articulating his point. Even his facial expressions matched the mood his character was meant to be in. He fit his character so well that if it weren t for him, I wouldn t have enjoyed the play as much as I did. As a whole he was a great actor. He did all the right gestures and made his acting feel so natural. It was like he was having a conversation with the audience. I think the element of his character is what created a connection with the play and myself. Another actor that was suitable for his character was the one who played Howie Newsome, the milkman. His character was very fascinating in how he managed to act along with the sound effects, and was on time. He was very enthusiastic in his scenes. For example, every ... • 5. Transcontinental Railroad Thesis Around the 1840 s, the western land was still fairy new to America with many Americans eager to expand. Americans became extremely curious, wondering what lies in this forsaken land and developed the proposal of manifest destiny. The term manifest destiny was a brief way to express support for American expansion and the annexation of western lands (Mountjoy 12). Americans were now longing for a path from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast and hoping to fulfill manifest destiny. To achieve this Asa Whitney proposes the construction of a transcontinental railroad (Streissguth 9). The transcontinental railroad was designed to link Omaha, Nebraska with Sacramento, California (Stein 105). By creating the transcontinental railroad America would be able to expand across the entire country and manifest destiny would be fulfilled. After a long process On May 10, 1869 the transcontinental railroad was complete (Bain 9). Americans had access across the entire United States and was able to complete manifest destiny. This accomplishment was huge for America and provided happiness for an abundance of citizens. However, this happiness was not achieved by everyone. Plains Indians were very agitated upon the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The transcontinental railroad s tracks ran through a number of tribal territories, bringing into conflict cultures that held very different views of the land and how it might be used and lived on (Jawort). • 6. Andy Goldsworthy Analysis In the second half of the twentieth century, artistic movements made pushes in order to move beyond the traditional gallery space, changing the terrain of displaying and making art. An artist s body of work no longer needed to reside inside of a gallery or art collection, and artists became free to explore other ways of creating and displaying work. In this vein, Andy Goldsworthy works sculpturally with natural media, and leaves the sculptures within a particular environment, often expecting his work to decay quickly. Many times, the only evidence of any art he makes is the photographs taken during the process. By more traditional standards, art of this nature is entirely contradictory. Goldsworthy had constructed a dome made out of sticks at the edge of a tide pool during low tide, right next to a river meeting an ocean. This is described further by Jeffrey L. Will it stay intact? , to which Goldsworthy responds, No it won t, absolutely not. (cite) The tide begins to pull in, and some of the outer shell of sticks begin to float away. • 7. The Construction Of Occupational Specialty Codes Essay On September 29, 2016, the U. S. Navy announced that it would modernize the enlisted ratings of the Navy. The plan includes the installation of occupational specialty codes. These codes are similar to those used in the other services. The plan also called for sailors to be referred to by only their rank, such as Petty Officer First Class. The modernization of the enlisted rating system has caused morale issues in the fleet, makes job field detailing better, and aligns with the other branches. First, there will be morale problems in the fleet with the modernization plan. The plan discarded a tradition that goes back two hundred years to the beginning of the Navy. Rates such as Boatswain s Mate, Gunner s Mate and Quartermaster have been in use since the start of the Navy (Broderick). Dickstein quoted a sailor saying about the plan that, It seemed to come out of nowhere without much notice, so a lot of people were surprised it happened (Dickstein, 2016). Sailors are very protective of their rates, and many have conveyed anger and confusion with the plan. According to Church, a seaman stated that When you re a Boatswain s Mate it comes with a lot of pride because of what you do (Church). Qantas requires an organisational culture of behaviours that support its security vision, policies and procedures. With direction from the Board, the airline has embarked on a journey to identify its current security culture and develop a method to assess and improve the culture going forward. There is little evidence to suggest that this has been accomplished elsewhere, particularly within aviation, and the findings will play a key role in Qantas ability to influence regulators. The focus for this project is on the Australian market and the 65% domestic market share, however there is evidence to suggest that considerations will also need to be made in the new and growing Asian markets. Qantas engaged PwC to assist them with this project. PwC consulted some 332 Qantas employees including Executives to understand the desired future state for security culture, and a cross section of Middle Management and the Frontline to establish the current state. Findings from Executive conversations were largely consistent with what emerged as ideas for change from the Middle Management and Frontline levels. Overarching themes encompassed the need for greater engagement including collaboration and a clearer understanding as to how security culture fits into the broader culture, specifically how security supports safety and is aligned to the brand values and desired organisational behaviours. Essay The Situation for Refugees and Immigrants in the USA The United States of America has always been a refuge where poor and oppressed people from the far corners of the world can come to begin a new life. Much of the nation s allure to prospective immigrants is in its promise of equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, or color. But the pressures of rising unemployment rates, congested cities, a crippled healthcare system, and national debt skyrocketing out of control have caused America to defend her borders against the influx of immigrants that threaten her already ailing economy. Authority figures, such as police and other first responders, may unwittingly strike fear into the hearts of these children because they have been conditioned to believe that these figures have the power, as well as the mandate, to destroy families. This mindset tends to discourage assimilation into mainstream American communities and promote instead the tendency of these families to cluster into small, ethnically concentrated barrios, or neighborhoods. Within these barrios, the culture and lifestyle of Mexico is recreated, which often reinforces psychological and physical isolation from mainstream American culture. Alliances are formed with others in similar circumstances, where commiseration often leads to a rising sense of resentment. It is not uncommon for angry groups to rise up in opposition to the society that is viewed as the oppressor. Evidence of this can be seen almost daily as senseless gang violence permeates our news broadcasts, plagues our communities, and terrorizes our citizens. For the purpose of this paper vegetarianism is described as a plant based diet (fruits, vegetables, etc), though the most important factor being the total exclusion of meat, not including fish for most practitioners. According to a 2008 study conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau on behalf of Vegetarian Times magazine, roughly 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, follow a vegetarian based diet. In addition, 22.8 million Americans maintain to follow a vegetarian inclined diet, while 11.9 million are definitely interested in becoming a vegetarian in the future ( Vegetarianism ). Unfortunately, the ability to achieve truly variable valve timing has eluded automotive manufacturers. Most variable timing mechanisms were created as tools for the automotive engineer. Their use was limited to the laboratory as a means of testing multiple, virtual cam profiles. These early camless engines allowed for the designers to choose the best cams for the engine under scrutiny, but were less than energy efficient. Furthermore, they were laboratory machines and were not capable of being mass produced or utilized in an automobile. There have been a few attempts at developing production models of camless engines, most notably by Ford, but the use of solenoids has impeded their implementation. Using solenoids to control hydraulic fluid and ultimately the opening and closing of the engine valves introduces its own limitations. The solenoids consume considerable energy and are a binary control device they are either on or off. Therefore the hydraulic fluid, controlled LIMITATIONS OF THE CAM: NEED FOR VARIABLE VALVE TIMING Automobile manufacturers have recognized the compromises associated with by the solenoids, is either flowing or blocked. This experimental rate law was the same as the literature rate law for the bleaching reaction between green dye and cetylpyridinum chloride, with first order dependence on the bleaching compound cetylpyridinum chloride. Traditional aspects of religion, specifically Christianity, are rarely, if at all, present in this novel. Does DeLillo believe that religion is relativity in our modern society? Or is he pushing the boundaries by creating a distorted reality in which American culture is the primary religion? It is the closest I can come to God (141). By stating this, Jack identities traditional religion as an obscure practice that he has no access to. Modern society proves not only unconquerable but also unconditionally opposed to the practices and ideals of traditional religion, which encourages humans that it is possible to believe in a higher power. Even the clergy, who are supposedly the most devout followers of religion, only pretend to believe. In turn, the clergy s acceptance of religion exaggerates and evolves into a form of resigned impersonation. This notion becomes evident when Jack discusses religion with Sister Hermann Marie: To abandon such beliefs completely, the human race would die. This is why we are here. A tiny minority. To embody old things, old beliefs... If we did not pretend to believe these things, the world would collapse (318). Prohibition did not achieve its goals. Instead, it added to the problems it was intended to solve. On 16th January 1920, one of the most common personal habits and customs of American society came to a halt. As a result of this new law, a new social problem arose. Seldom has law been more flagrantly violated. Not only did Americans continue to manufacture, barter, and possess alcohol; they drank more of it. Americans who supported prohibition, argued that if drinking alcohol was illegal, the public would recognize and respect the law, and in turn, would give it up. During the start of prohibition, it appeared as though it was working. But, what was really going on, was that since the transportation and production was not allowed, bootleggers had to find ways to do it without being caught. The price of beer rose, because it had to be transported in large barrels, which was more difficult. As a result, people started drinking more potent hard liquor. It took less to get drunk, therefore it was easier to transport, thus, it was cheaper. Americans would drink this potent liquor and get drunk a lot faster, for less money. As a downfall, however, the liquor had no standards. The rate of alcohol related deaths due to poisoning drastically increased from 1,064 in 1920, to 4,154 in 1925. One of the biggest outcomes of prohibition was the development of organized crime. Because liquor was no longer legally available, the public turned to gangsters who took on the bootlegging industry and supplied them with liquor.
