2. A Taxonomy for Learning
Teaching and Assessing
LORIN W. ANDERSON AND DAVID R. KRATHWOHL
3. WHAT IS ACTUALLY OBJECTIVES?
• Objectives help us to focus our attention and effort; they indicate
what we want to accomplish.
• In education, they are explicit formulations of the ways in which
students are expected to be changed by the education process.
• Objectives are now more likely to be referred to as content
standards.
4. Specifity of Objectives
• Global objectives are complex, multifaceted learning outcomes that require substantial
time and instruction lo accomplish.
Contoh: Tujuan Pendidikan Nasional (Pemerintah)
• Educational Objectives are more specific than global objectives but more general
objectives than the needed to guide the day-to-day classroom instruction that teachers
provide.
Contoh: KI (Pemerintah)
• Instructional objectives have substantially greater specificity than educational objectives.
Contoh: Tujuan Pembelajaran (pemerintah dan guru)
5. The Need for Taxonomy
• A vast number of objectives for learners need to be organized in some
way
• A taxonomy is the way we classify the objectives.
• In our taxonomy, a statement of objective contains verb that
describes the cognitive process and the noun that describes the
knowledge students are expected to acquire.
• Example:
Siswa mampu membedakan system pemerintahan
presidensial, monarki, dan parlementer.
6. • The continuum underlying the cognitive process dimension is
assumed to be cognitive complexity
• The knowledge dimension is assumed to lie along a continuum from
concrete (factual) to abstract (metacognitive).
• Taxonomy table helps us understand objectives .

1. Factual
2. Conceptual
3. Procedural
4. Metacognitive
8. How does our increased understanding of
objectives help us?
Our increased understanding helps us answer the following 4 basic
organizing questions:
1. What is important for students to learn in the limited school and
classroom time available? (learning)
2. How does one plan and deliver instruction that will result in high levels
of learning for large numbers of students? (teaching)
3. How does one select or design assessment instruments and procedures
that provide accurate information about how well students are learning?
(evaluating)
4. How does one ensure that objectives, instruction, and assessment are
consistent with one another? (alignment)
9. The Taxonomy Table, Objectives, and Instructional Time
• One of the most common and long-standing curriculum questions is
What is worth learning?
• At an abstract level, the answer defines what it means to be an
educated person. At a more concrete level, the answer defines the
meaning of the subject matter being taught.
• The Taxonomy framework obviously can't directly tell teachers what is
worth learning. But by helping teachers translate standards into a
common language for comparison with what they personally hope to
achieve, and by presenting the variety of possibilities for
consideration, the Taxonomy may provide some perspective to guide
curriculum decisions.
10. The Taxonomy table, instruction and assessment
• Once an objective has been placed into a particular cell of the
Taxonomy table, we can begin systematically to attack the problem of
helping students achieve that objective.
• What kind of activities will guide students to achieve certain learning
objectives?
• Different objectives types of objectives require different types of
approaches, that is different learning activities, different curricular
materials and different teacher and student roles.
• Second, similar types of objectives regardless of differences in the
topic or subject matter may require similar instructional approaches
(Joyce and Weil, 1996).
• Different types of objectives (that is, objectives in different cells of the
table) require different approaches to assessment.
11. The Concept of Alignment
• Alignment refers to the degree of correspondence among the
objectives, instruction, and assessment.
• Severe misalignment can cause problems. If, for example, instruction
is not aligned with assessments, then even high-quality instruction
will not likely influence student performance on those assessments.
• Similarly, if assessments are not aligned with objectives, then the
results of the assessments will not reflect achievement of those
objectives.
• Typically, the degree of alignment is determined by comparing
objectives with assessment, objectives with instruction, and
instruction with assessment.
12. Factual Knowledge
1. Knowledge of Terminology
• Mencakup pengetahuan tentang label dan simbol verbal maupun
nonverbal.
• Contoh: pengetahuan tentang alfabet, istilah-istilah ilmiah,
kosakata dalam bidang lukis, istilah dalam akutansi, simbol2
dalam peta dsb.
• Merupakan bahasa dasar dari bidang-bidang tertentu.
• Identik dengan novice learner.
13. 2. Knowledge of Specific Details and Elements
14. Conceptual Knowledge
1. Knowledge of Classifications and Categories
• Mencakup kategori, kelas, divisi, dan penyusunan tentang spesifik
bidang tertentu yang berfungsi untuk menstrukturisasi dan
mensistematisasi sebuah fenomena.
• Klasifikasi dan kategori berbeda dengan terminology karena
membentuk link antara elemen2 di dalamnya.
• Contoh: jenis-jenis literatur, macam-macam bentuk kepemilikan
bisnis, bagian-bagian kalimat, macam-macam permasalahan
psikologi dll.
16. 2. Knowledge of Principle and Generalization
• Prinsip dan generalisasi memuat sejumlah fakta dan peristiwa,
menggambarkan keterkaitan antara detail-detail spesifiknya (sehingga
membentuk klasifikasi dan kategori), dan selanjutnya menggambarkan
proses dan hubungan antara klasifikasi dan kategori.
• Contoh: hukum-hukum fisika, prinsip-prinsip kimia yang relevan
dengan kehidupan, prinsip-prinsip yang mempengaruhi
oprasi bilangan aritmatik.
17. 3. Knowledge of Theories, Models, and Structure
• Pengetahuan ini menunjukan hubungan dan susunan detail-detail
specific, klasifikasi dan kategori, dan prinsip dan generalisasi.
• Contoh: pengetahuan tentang hubungan antara prinsip2 kimia
sebagai dasar teori kimia, pengetahuan tentang bentuk
dasar susunan pemerintahan, pengetahuan tentang teori
relatifitas.
18. Procedural Knowledge
1. Knowledge of Subject-Spesific Skills and Algorithms
• Pengetahuan tentang urutan atau langkah-langkah yang sudah
tetap atau fix.
• Seringnya, hasil dari penggunaan pengetahuan procedural ini
biasanya berupa pengetahuan factual atau konseptual.
• Contoh: pengetahuan tentang skill mengecat dengan cat air,
pengetahuan tentang algoritma tambahan, pengetahuan
tentang skill yang digunakan untuk menangkap makna
dari struktur kalimat.
19. 2. Knowledge of Subject-specific Techniques and Methods
20. 2. Knowledge of Criteria for Determining when to Use Appropriate
Procedures
23. NO LEARNING
Amy reads a chapter on electrical circuits in her science textbook. She
skims the material, sure that the test will be a breeze. When she is
asked to recall part of the lesson (as a retention test), she is able lo
remember very few of the key terms and facts. For example, she
cannot list the major components in an electrical circuit even though
they were described in the chapter. When she is asked to use the
information to solve problems (as part of a transfer test), she cannot.
24. Rote Learning
Becky reads the same chapter on electrical circuits. She reads carefully,
making sure she reads every word. She goes over the material and
memorizes the key facts. When she is asked to recall the material, she
can remember almost all of the important terms and facts in the
lesson. Unlike Amy, she is able lo list the major components in an
electrical circuit. When she is asked to use the information to solve
problems, however, she cannot.
25. MEANINGFUL LEARNING
• Carla reads the same textbook chapter on electrical circuits. She reads carefully,
trying to make sense out of it. When she is asked to recall the material, she, like
Becky, can remember almost all of the important terms and facts in the lesson.
Furthermore, when she is asked to use the information to solve problems, she
generates many possible solutions. In this scenario, not only does Carla possess
relevant knowledge, but she also can use that knowledge to solve problems and
to understand new concepts. She can transfer her knowledge to new problems
and new learning situations. Carla has attended to relevant information and has
understood it. The resulting leaming outcome can be called meaningful learning.
26. REMEMBER
1. Recognizing (mengenali)
terkenal.
• Pada pelajaran matematika siswa diminta mengingat jumlah sisi pada
bangun ruang.
• Bentuk soal penilaian umumnya berbentuk verifikasi (True False),
matching, atau pilihan.
27. 2. Recalling (mengingat kembali)
• Memanggil kembali pengetahuan yang sudah dipelajari dari
ingatan jangka panjang saat diberikan pancingan.
• Alternatif dari recalling adalah retrieving.
• Pada mata pelajaran social, siswa diminta menyebutkan
komoditas ekspor utama Indonesia.
suatu representasi menjadi representasi yang lain; words to words
(paraphrasing), pictures to words, words to pictures, number to
words, words to numbers, musical notes to tones, dsb.
• Dalam mata pelajaran social, siswa mampu memparafrase kutipan
tentang poin 1 sumpah pemuda.
• Dalam pelajaran IPA siswa mampu menggambar fenomena
pembelahan sel.
• Dalam pelajaran Matematika siswa mampu mengubah persamaan
yang diekspresikan dengan menggunakan kata-kata menjadi
persamaan dalam bentuk angka.
