Amy Poehler Speech Summary
Introduction
Amy Poehler has many memorable roles, from being a recurring member on Saturday Night Live, to
her award nominated portrayal of Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation. Poehler is an American
comedian classic. When she was chosen as the 2011 Harvard Class Day Commencement Speaker, she
took on a serious and honorable role. Poehler gave the graduating class of 2011, a hilarious, engaging,
and inspirational speech. Poehler was chosen to give a speech that was out of her ordinary comfort
zone, to inspire a hardworking class of graduates as they headed off into the working world. Her
speech is an excellent example of effective rhetoric through its use of artistic proofs, humor, and
establishing common ground. Through the content of Poehler s speech, her detailed care to the
rhetorical situation, and her impressive use of rhetoric, Poehler gave one of the most memorable and
moving commencement addresses in Harvard s history.
Speech Summary
Amy Poehler gave the 2011 Harvard Commencement address to graduating seniors, their families, and
their guests on May 25, 2011. Poehler combined her classic comedic humor with a serious underlying
message to create an engaging speech. Poehler began the speech with humor and explained her prior
knowledge about Harvard. She went on to discuss her own college experience, her career, and some of
the best advice she learned throughout her life. Her main message of the speech was that no one can
do it alone. She explained that no

Evaluation Of Open Reduction And Internal Fixation Of...
Evaluation of perioperative variations in the levels of inflammatory markers in open reduction and
internal fixation of maxillofacial fractures INTRODUCTION
Infectious complications are commonly encountered following ORIF (Open reduction and internal
fixation) ever since it has been adopted as a treatment modality for maxillofacial fractures. Early
detection of infection can be difficult in the postoperative phase as many signs and symptoms may
actually mimic a SIRS (Systemic inflammatory response syndrome).
There is a wealth of literature supporting the use of various inflammatory markers in diagnosis and
monitoring of treatment of infectious complications in post operative patients[1 4]. Various authors
have studied markers including (Total leucocyte count) TLC, CRP(C reactive protein), AST (Aspartate
Transaminase) and ALT (Alanine Transaminase) in patients with SIRS and sepsis [5].
Behaviour of inflammatory markers and their correlation to infection in the postoperative phase have
been evaluated in various disciplines of surgery. However, similar studies in maxillofacial surgery
have been found to be very scarce. We therefore designed a study to evaluate perioperative variations
in the levels inflammatory markers in Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) of maxillofacial
fractures.
An attempt was made to establish an acceptable range of variations in the values of inflammatory
markers in ORIF and co relate these variations to the length of surgery, type of

What Is Lucretius Argument Against Religion
Lucretius, a Roman philosopher, was greatly inspired by the teachings of Epicurus. In Lucretius s
book, On the Nature of Things, he expands on many Epicurean principles and at times even alters
them. Nothing comes from nothing , the first principle that Lucretius endorses, is essential to his
argument for the origin of the world. Using this principle, Lucretius against the accepted Roman
religion by adding the concept that divine intervention is not the root of creation, instead he gives
credit to atoms. These atoms, or beginnings of things, he reasoned, came together to form masses
called bodies. The earth was one such body, and it yielded many bodies within it. This entire process,
governed by nature, is what Lucretius believes created the world and everything in it. However,
Lucretius falls short in his argument against religion by indirectly asserting that nature is in fact a
God. Although Lucretius explicitly states in Book 5 of On the Nature of Things, that the true being
behind the world s beginning, Mother Nature, is not a divine being, the characteristics he assigns her
prove otherwise. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, he passionately asserts that the earth herself and Nature [is] the artificer of things . (Lucretius
5. 243 244). Explaining his theory, he articulates that atoms, an integral part of nature, operate under
circumstances in which they swerve a little (2. 219) causing collisions. These collisions led to the
formation of things, both animate and inanimate. In other words, these atoms successfully created the
earth and all the creatures living upon it. In essence, rather than deny the creation of the world by an
unknown force or even by chance, Lucretius simply substitutes the role of the Roman gods with
Nature. Nature, thus, well deserves the name of mother , well deserves the title creator, and well
deserves the title

Ferrari Engines, Bicycle Brake
Written Analysis #3 The article I decided to read for the third analysis was Ferrari Engines, Bicycle
Brakes. This article was written by Edward Hallowell who is a psychiatrist that has attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia. Both of these disorders individually come with a lot of different
struggles. Throughout the article, Hallowell discussed his struggle as a student and what/ who helped
him get through school. One of the first things Hallowell mentions was his first grade teacher, Mrs.
Eldredge. She seemed to be his support system when it came to reading aloud during class. From other
research, I know that this can be very difficult for students with dyslexia since they read slower, letters
can get switched around, and whole words can look switched around. Mrs. Eldredge stood by his side
while he read, so that no one would laugh at his stuttering or stammering (Hallowell, 2012). I believe
this was a nice move by her because she recognized his struggles, and did everything she could to
make him feel comfortable reading aloud in class. He ends up crediting many of his gifted teachers for
him becoming a good student and getting through college to get his degree as a psychiatrist
(Hallowell, 2012). The next part of the article, Hallowell gives suggestions to teachers on how to ...

He states, It s like a Ferrari a race car. You have the power to win races and become a champion.
However, you do have one problem. You have bicycle brakes. Your brakes just aren t strong enough to
control your powerful brain, so you can t slow down or stop when you need to (Hallowell, 2012). I
honestly love how he put this because it s true. I know several ADHD students and a few who seem to
have dyslexia, and they are willing to work hard, but get distracted by the smallest of things. If they
worked hard on strengthening their brakes , I know that many of them have the potential to be bright

Education In Education And Education
Throughout my life I ve encountered many educators whether through elementary, middle school,
high school, or college level. My involvement with these educators throughout the years would
become very instrumental in not only my learning, but also becoming an educator. Educators can
range from parents, who become our primary educators of life as a child throughout adolescents, and
eventually adulthood. A parent will educate us as youth on what we perceive as home training, family
values and morals. Preachers can be educators as they educate you on the bible and the way of life.
Teachers who serve as a master educator, serves a vital part of a child s learning and learning needs.
Teaching in most cases is showing or demonstrating what you ve experienced and applying that task
to someone else. I reflect back to my early years as a child and my little league baseball coach
teaching how to become a baseball player. Although I know how to throw and catch a ball, I didn t
know the fundamentals of the game. One example I can think of is the coach teaching me how to slide
when stealing a base. The example he would use is pretend you re running on a slip in slide when
stealing a base. I also think back to my kindergarten teacher teaching my how to tie my shoes or how
to recite my ABCs. Learning comes when you take what was taught and apply it to that particular
frame. I remember when I leaned my alphabets, and I couldn t wait to recite them to my family.
Learning is also is also

Erickson Sandwich Generation Analysis
Next is emotional, and several of questions was asked about helping the community to feeling like a
sandwich generation. When it comes to Erickson s developmental stages, for the middle adult it is
generativity versus stagnation. This middle age adult are either giving back and helping others or
stuck and lack of activity, developmental, and growth. C.L stated that because his kids are still young,
he should be helping the younger generation to grow and giving them resources to be successful in
life. It s important to him to help others as well because helping others makes you feel good about
yourself and knowing that it can make others happy. Growing and developing is all part of life, and

Oleanna by David Mamet Essay
Oleanna by David Mamet
The fast pace, repetition and interruptions evident in the interaction between Carol and John are clear
illustrations of the unwritten contest to have the last word and be right in act 1. The use of these
dramatic and linguistic techniques are what make the interaction between the two characters so
fascinating. Both are constantly struggling to keep their dignity and reputation. On page 11, Carol
pleads teach me. Teach me . Although this is imperative, the context in which it is said suggests that
she uses it passively in quite a begging, pleading manner. The active verb also demonstrates her
impatience towards education and frustration with not understanding.
In response, John pleads ?I?m trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here it would seem that both john and carol do not understand each other and, again, John is viewed
as the more authoritative and powerful one.
The interruptions present in act 1 are significant to the play?s agenda. Although the audience is meant
to sympathise with Carol for her lack of understanding and the professor?s approach to teaching her
individually, the telephone calls, interrupting the conversation at key points, represents a connection to
the world outside of the room where the entire play takes place. It gives the audience an immediate
insight to John?s life so that we do not dismiss him for his difficulties with expressing himself or his
arguments. Mamet, having then made John into a ?3D character? is then able to introduce him as
realer person, showing his true emotions more and more towards the end of the play. Without this link
to the outside world, which is often forgotten in a context such as this, John would seem pompous,
intolerant, incompetent and unprofessional. Mamet has carefully constructed the interaction and
language to show the power corruption between the two and is successful in balancing the two sides of
the argument. A watching audience would very easily be able to choose which side they believed right.
It can also be viewed that Mamet uses language to oppress others. John is often seen using academic
lexis, which unnecessarily complicates and blurs his point in case. This then

Frost-Pre-Depth
Frost depth is the depth that the groundwater in soil is expected to freeze. The frost depth differ
depends on the climate conditions of that area, the heat transfer properties of the soil and adjacent
materials, and on nearby heat sources. The building code takes frost depth into account of the
calculation because of frost heaving that can damage buildings by moving the foundation. it is
significant that the footings of buildings must be installed in the ground below the frost depth. If the
underground portions of the supporting structure are above the frost depth, the pressure applied on the
footing will be upward. This could push the footing out of the ground or even responsible for major
structural damage in buildings. So, always confirming

Comparing Omissions In A Clockwork Orange And The Novel
The film A Clockwork Orange and the novel A Clockwork Orange are like fraternal twins. Indeed they
share the same foundation, but there are disparities between the two that restrict them from being
recognizably identical. The film contains plot modifications and omissions that lead the story astray
from what Burgess originally intended.
The first difference is actually the very first sentence. The novel begins with a quote that is reused
throughout the story: What s it going to be then, eh? The film omits the sentence from all appropriate
parts of the story, completely disregarding its significance. Another bothersome omission is the old
man with the books on crystallography. In the novel, Alex and his crew beat the man in the beginning
of the book and then the man and his crew beat Alex near the end. This role switch symbolizes
ignorant youth disrupting the society that was paved by their wise elders, and then the fall of youth by
their ignorance. Instead, the film skips forward to chapter two (omitting Alex s advantage play with
the old ladies) to the scene with the singing homeless man. The omission changes the meaning of the
role switch to that of the elite treading upon the subclass and the subclass attaining revenge. ... Show

The most troubling omission is reference to the title. The novel actually uses the phrase like
clockwork orange. First Alex sees the words in the HOME cottage, and then he regurgitates them back
in appropriate context when he feels as though the correction system is mistreating him. This
emphasizes the topic of moral choice mentioned throughout the novel. The author stressed the
importance of moral choice but the screenwriter labeled the topic minutia and only gave a slight shout
out to it within a short monologue from the prison Charlie on Alex s fourteenth day

Stereotypes In Yellow Face
The satirical play Yellow Face by Jeff Liu exposed the racism toward Asian Americans in the United
States. Yellow Face began as a reaction to the casting of a Caucasian as an Asian role in the Broadway
play M. Butterfly but unraveled to be a challenge of the status quo and stereotypes. In the play, almost
all the actors were cast to represent multiple characters, but I was mostly impressed by the
performances of the father Sab Shimono since he added an emotional appeal, the protagonist of the
play, Ryan Yu, due to his alert reactions, and Christopher Gorham through his emphasis on his role as
an Asian. Shimono constantly created a passionate connection that was very effective. Throughout the
play, Shimono played an important role in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yu exemplified active shifts in his expression and movements which allowed him to stay true to his
character. For example, when Yu accidentally chose Christopher Gorham and realized Gorham wasn t
Asian, Yu immediately acted surprised and at a loss of words. His reaction was revealed when Yu
spoke to his father about the incident with Gorham in the middle of the night. Yu was at his desk
already a little drunk and as he spoke with his father he portrayed a guilty voice and in the scene he
also took some pills. By having this conversation in midst of the night, and by mixing pills with
alcohol, all of these small gestures revealed his distraught composer and his stressful temperament.
Furthermore, when Gorham was asked questions by Asian American students, Yu instantly replied for
him and he invented the story of Gorham s Siberian Jewish descent. Throughout this whole scene, Yu
acted confused and angered, which were all shown through his facial response and his tense body
language as he bit his nails and continually spilled out new details to corroborate his story of Gorham
with a shaky voice in hope to cover his mistake. Overall, Yu used his facial expression and body
language to reveal his

Has Macbeth Gone Too Far Essay
Has Macbeth gone too far? Throughout the play, Macbeth has become increasingly more insane, and
more brutal as well. Ever since he was told about his future, Macbeth has a desire for power and will
do anything to obtain power. His first malicious act was when he murdered King Duncan to obtain the
title of king of Scotland. Thanks to his decision, Macbeth will then increasingly become
psychopathically insane, and develop a mind of what we consider today, a mass murder. Later on, he
will murder three more people, including his best friend Banquo, to protect, what he thinks, will
deceive his plot to be king, and attempt to kill even more. At the point of Scene 4 of the play, Macbeth
has completely mentally lost his mind, and believes that if there s something wrong with one person,

As the play progresses, there s a building of tension in it. The drama really begins when the first
prophecy comes true as Macbeth is named the Thane of Cawdor, and then plots to kill King Duncan
for the throne. From that point, as Macbeth murders more people, and his mind becomes to break
down even more; he will lead up to a breaking point. Around Act 4, it is clear that Macbeth has no
control of himself and will kill anyone that he desires. At the same time, Macduff will come to realize
that Macbeth is going insane and will go to Malcolm to seek help, but he will fail to protect his own
family. When Macduff s son in line 81, says to the murderer, Thou li st, though shag eared villain, and
the assassin murders him and Lady Macduff, it will become the boiling point. It was at that moment
where you know, that Macbeth will sure get what he deserves. Macbeth will become the ultimate
villain because he will, at this point, have murdered not only men, but innocent woman and children
as well. In the next scene, Macduff will hear this news, and he is determined to bring Macbeth to

World History Pre AP
March 16, 2017
The Schlieffen Plan In the early 1900 s, before the dawn of World War I, there was a term that is still
used today called a Two Front War. This was a term that is used to describe when a war is being
fought on two separate lands simultaneously. Usually a combatant to this predicament is to separate
the country s army into two or more forces to fight against both contending forces at the same time.
During World War I however, Germany was in a position having to fight France, Great Britain, and
Belgium towards the Western Front of Germany, whilst having to fight Russia on the Eastern Front.
Since Germany had to disperse their strength, the other countries end the

The poem Carrickfergus was written by an Irish writer called Louis

The poem Carrickfergus was written by an Irish writer called Louis
MacNeice in The 20th Century. It was written in four line stanzas and now I am going to analyse this
poem and talk about each stanza.
In the first line of the first stanza, we notice that the child Louis
MacNeice is using specific detail in his poem as he says he was born in Belfast between the mountain
and the gantries. MacNeice was brought up among a lot of divisions and when there was a lot of
trouble going on, he mentions divisions in his second stanza when he says, The

In the next stanza MacNeice says that the church is to the blame for all the wrongs going on, I assume
he says this because he doesn t like the church but I believe he genuinely doesn t think the church is
too blame. All throughout this poem, MacNeice mentions the
Normans various times; I think that he is emphasizing his knowledge of
Irish history. MacNeice also tells us that his father was a rector and he was banned forever from the
candles of the Irish poor; again he is showing divisions by saying the Irish are poor. In this same
stanza he talks about the Chichesters who are a rich Irish family.
The war then starts and Louis uses sensory images; sight and sound.
The sight images he uses are the horse with long Dummies hanging from gibbets for bayonet practice,
and the sound images he uses is sentry s challenge echoing all day long. These images make the poem
more realistic. He then goes on and states that a Yorkshire terrier ran to the gate lodge, marched at
ease and sang, Who killed Cock Robin ? The troops then went out to the lodge and off to the front, the
information he is giving us here isn t too significant but it does give us an account off some troops at

Applying Psychological Thinking To Sports Essays
quot;Sports is by far one of the fastest growing pass times in the United

advantage to compete at the highest level. This is where the psychology of sports comes into play. In

Many of the pathways, however, lie within the brain. These pathways can be effectively trained by the
use of mental techniques such as imagery and simulation.
Imagery is the process by which you can create, modify or strengthen pathways important to the co
ordination of your muscles, by training purely within your mind. Imagery rests on the important
principle that you can exercise these parts of you brain with imputes from our imagination rather than
from your sences: the parts of the brain that you train with imagery experience imagined and real
inputs similarly, with the real inputs being merely more vividly experienced (Rainer 1987).
Simulation is similar to imagery in that it seeks to improve the quality of training by teaching your
brain to cope with circumstances that would not be otherwise met until an important competition was
reached. Simulation, however, is carried out by making your physical training circumstances as
similar as possible to the quot;real thing quot; for example by bringing in crowds of spectators, by
having performances judged, or by inviting press to a training session (Rainer 1987).
Deciding your Commitment to your sport is possibly the most important
quot;Sports Psychology quot; decision you will make. It is important to realize that excellence
demands complete dedication: if you want to be the top athlete, then training to be the top athlete must
be the most important thing in you life (Orlick 1994).

Child Labor and Academic Performance
Chapter I
The Problem and Its Background
A.Background of the Study
Child labour is a worldwide problem regardless of the economic status of a country. This social
phenomenon continues to exist both in developed and developing countries. The Philippines as one of
Newly Industrializing Countries, also encounters the same (C. Diaz, personal communication,
December 7, 2009).
Child labour is rampant in this country due to poverty. It deprives basic right to education and health
(Philippine Star, 1993). Many child labourers are forced to stop schooling due to the necessity of
contributing to family s income. Child labour with its goal to respond immediately to the basic need of
the household, deprives the child of the time to focus on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
D.Hypothesis
Child labour decreases the academic performance of child labourers working in Ilang, Davao City.
E.Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will only focus on the effects of child labour to the academic performance of children aged
7 15 years old in Barangay Ilang, Davao City. These children were enrolled for the school year 2009
2010. Teachers who may have noticed the changes in the academic performance of child laborers are
alo included. The grades will be the basis of academic performance. General average in school year
2009 2010 will be used to measure the academic performance.
F.Significance of the Study
This study is an attempt to know the situation of child labourers, aged 7 15 years old who are working
in Barangay Ilang, Davao City and the problems that they may encounter in their schooling due to
their work. In presenting peculiar circumstances surrounding their academic performance particularly
their involvement in child labour, this paper aims to prompt government agencies and non government
organizations concerned to work on providing a comprehensive program that will gradually put an end
to their child labour and if not, to provide mechanisms to ensure that working children attain their
potential academically.
This study will serve as a source of data for further research on the condition of academic performance
of child labourers; the information to be gathered from the study will provide insights into crafting

Assessment of United States Performance in the Vietnam War
The quote is saying that the USA should have won the Vietnam War because they had better weapons
and better trained soldiers than the Vietcong. This can be split into 2 parts: America should have won
and, America had better weapons and training than the Vietcong . I agree with the first part because
America should have won the Vietnam War as they are very powerful. I disagree with the second part
because the Vietcong ha supplies from Russia and China which were good weapons and they were

America did have better technology which you would have expected them to use toothier advantage
more than they did. Where the American s had helicopters, the Vietcong had bikes. The American s

they dropped more bombs than were dropped in the whole of World War II. They had chemicals such
as Agent Orange and Napalm which was special. Regular Napalm just sets fire to things which can be
put out with water or by taking the oxygen away. The American s developed it so that it could burn
without oxygen which created devastating effects. People rolled on the ground but it continued to burn
through their body and it still burnt people when they jumped in water.
I do disagree that the American s were better trained. They were better trained in conventional warfare
and had a lot of experience from World War II. But the Vietcong matched this. They were better
trained than the American s but not in conventional warfare. They were experts in guerrilla warfare
which proved vital in their defeat on the USA. They also had a lot experience as they were at war with
the French for a long time.
The American s also had more problems which prevented them from winning the war. In my opinion,
this was probably the main reason America lost the war. American support diminished rapidly as this

Gender Justices And Gender Equality In Canada
Gender equality means that women and girls have the same opportunities as men and boys and to be
equal women have the same choices about education, careers, and about their bodies as men do. The
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives basic human rights to every Canadian, men or women
and the equality section of the charter, which guarantees gender equality states 15. (1) Every
individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit
of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or
ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability. This poses the question, To
what extent do historical and contemporary injustices challenge the narrative and identity of Canada
as an inclusive, multicultural, tolerant society? A woman s choice or right, whether about their
education, employment, or their bodies, should be given the same respect as men s choices, and while
Canada has made much progress, there is still so much more that needs to be done. Women should
have the choice of whatever they choose to study at a preferred university even if the area of study
may be male dominated. Women are very capable as much as men are and should not get a lower
salary because of gender discrimination. Women must have the right to get an abortion for their own
reasons and not to get discriminated for their choices because it is her body.

Literary Analysis Of Revelation By Flannery OConnor
Revelation
Among many diseases, judgment is an epidemic virus within the human mind; more dangerously with
the lack of discernment can create a toxic atmosphere and such intoxication is highlighted within the
short story, Revelation, by Flannery O Connor. The story is set in the south, and revolves around an
irrational yet religious character, name Mrs. Turpin, who overlooks her own flaws to cast judgments
on others. The author uses language, irony, and archetypes within the story to present that judgement
is a form of unconscious self deception that causes hypocritical behavior and ultimately self agitation.
The author demonstrates this by having the characters cast judgment upon each other, which makes
the act of passing judgment on to others an infectious disease fed by society.
The usage of informal language in the beginning of the story, produces transparent characters by
exposing their flaws through their speech. Opening with the reckless announcement addressed by
Mrs.Turpin, I wish I could reduce (3). in front of strangers had marked her hasty character. This early
exposure of her flaw notes the tragedy of her character for being quick to speak, quick to conclude and
quick to judge. As Mrs.Turpin begins to build judgment upon others from Girl Scout Shoes to
bedroom slippers as she expects (5) Mrs.Turpin becomes a false believer, drowning within her own
deceptive conclusion by gripping onto her theory of goodness being carried by people s shoes.

compelling portrait is depicted of the 1830 s powerless and tired labor class. To further describe her
subject, Davis uses body markers such as: race, gender, and class identification and limited language

Influenced by the events going on around her during the American Civil War (1861 1865), Davis

grandfather seemed to have predicted well that she would make wrong decisions, and that failure

misfortune, leading her to endless unhappiness. Glory believed she was bound to a resentful and

Analysis Of Invictus By William Earnest Henley
Invictus by William Earnest Henley is about a man, the courage he has through his struggles, and the
relationship he has with God. When reading this poem I think of my own life as a young girl. She is
someone that I think about a lot and I look at the struggles and how the relationship with God has
changed throughout these challenges. All the evil that had come into her life and she turned to God to
blame because of the beliefs she had of him protecting her. The only way she did not turn to Death is
through hope like Henley with courage. The little painful stories have formed the pain we feel
everyday but also the strength in our lives to keep moving forward.
She was a young girl in high school just trying to be normal. A month of sleeping and inability to get
out of bed, her mother finally got worried and took her to the hospital. Tests were performed,
questions were asked, and she would finally be diagnosed with the trembling words of, You have
depression. She was put on many medications but this would not stop her from putting knives to her
chest and throat, wanting for it all to end. This monster in her head would be there for the rest of her
life, creating the inability to make the chemicals she needed to have to be happy. Everyday prayers
would be made asking God why this was happening to her. As a teenage girl she found love in the
wrong and right places. Her first love was one whose hands were feared by her. The young girl was

Over the last twenty years, Peru has seen economic growth, reduction in poverty, and minimal
inflation rates. Despite this growth, Peru still faces major challenges: upwards of 25% of its
population still lives in poverty, it is one of top producers of illegal cocaine, and there are ongoing
social battles over Peru s natural resources. However, the U.S. has allied with Peru to support anti
narcotics programs and alternative development projects. Also, the U.S. is one of Peru s most
significant investors and trade partners. With this positive, cooperative relationship, our troops will not
be perceived as threats in this country (U.S. Department of State, 2013). Organic host nation medical

In the quest to develop safer use of force options for law enforcement the concept of neuromuscular
incapacitation technology was produced leading to the development of a Taser or conducted electrical

lethal option to use in force situations. As a potential investor in the Axon company which continues
to develop tasers and web based applications for law enforcement it is important to look at the

research was completed on the details presented in the indirect cash flow statement which consist of
noncash operating included in net income or loss (Foerster, Tsagarelis, Wang, 2017). Namely, the
direct method appears more straight forward with presenting information for operating cash receipts

looking at a direct method cash flow statement would be more beneficial. The indirect cash flow
statement derives net cash flow from operating activities without separately presenting any of the
operating cash receipts and payments. Although the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)
sees accruals as improving the ability of earnings to measure company performance by smoothing out
temporary fluctuations in cash flows, we see the lack of cash inflows from the tardy customer and the
resulting inconsistent presentation across several financial statements as fertile ground for security
mispricing. (Foerster et al., 2017, p. 74). Therefore, it would be benefit the potential investor in seeing

1984 George Orwell Totalitarianism
In history, many people have tried to see what the future will bring. George Orwell, author of 1984, is
no different. Orwell believed that a totalitarian form of government was close if the American citizens
were not aware of the dangers it holds. Throughout 1984, Orwell warns the readers of a horrible thing
under a totalitarian government. Orwell s message about totalitarian government is clearly stated as
WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH .
The first line of Big Brothers slogan is War is Peace , is an communication that describes
totalitarianism perfectly, Orwell knew totalitarianism is kept and gained through force, or war. His
message about totalitarian government is that it is never peaceful. Those under a totalitarian
government who are not completely agreed would be killed, much like today in China or Cuba.
Orwell showed this by having Winston and Julia horribly tortured after their conspiracy to overthrow
Big Brother was uncovered. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

but in all reality it would be a horrible place to live. Oceania could be called a Negative Utopia , much
like how Orwell was trying to get the public to tell about totalitarianism. Orwell wanted people to

This brings up an interesting argument of whether or not 16 and 17 year olds should be allowed to
vote. People will argue that 16 and 17 year olds do not know what they are doing or just have a lack of
interest and that is a reason why some say no to letting them vote but others say that it could mean the
difference in the election. 16 and 17 year olds should be allowed to vote because once they start voting

In theory, the US is capable of providing a varied and healthy diet for all; yet why are more than one
third (36.5%) of US adults obese (Ogden)? Broadly defined, the World Health Organization states that
obesity is a condition in which the presence of abnormal or excessive fat accumulation presents a risk
to health ( Obesity ). However, regardless of the growing prevalence and incidence rates, capitalism
has increasingly driven consumer behavior, perpetuating the wide spread of this health issue. Despite
the fact that four of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States in 2015 were a direct result

To begin with, the negligence of obesity in the United States today is rooted on the prevalence of
greed that has become a leading force in the economy and society. By putting profits above consumer
health due to the fear of not attaining the benefits of more wealth, greed has become a socially
accepted and justified trait. In a society where money is at the center of all decisions and activities, it
is unsurprising that the government has chosen the low hanging fruit for convenience s purpose by
neglecting this health issue and focusing on gaining profit instead. A clear example of this was in 2009
when the Obama administration first issued a stimulus bill to fight against obesity through community
level anti obesity campaigns. Unfortunately, at first the bill was not passed as the cost was too
expensive and it also came at a time where numerous households and firms were facing economic
hardships. DesJarlais, a leading US physician justifies the rejection of the bill by stating it was absurd
for the federal government to spend billions demonizing certain foods and trying to affect people s
personal dietary choices...it makes absolutely no sense that federal and city agencies would
aggressively advertise against American products made by American workers (Crabtree). This
justification explicitly depicts how, despite attempted

Designing A Pipeline Essay

Pipeline is used to transfer fluids liquid or gas from one location to another location. Designing

Designing a gas pipeline requires four aspects, the first aspect determines the length and direction of
pipeline, the second aspect determines the size of pipes and compressors, the third aspect is to
determine pressure and gas flow distribution in the pipeline transmission system .The fourth aspects
considers the chance of demands for growing of gas over time so the capacity of the system may be
needed to be increased by adding other components in parallel or series. (O. A. Almisned, 2002 )
Moreover, in this research a gas pipeline is designed taking into account the fluid type, transportation
distances, diameter, wall thickness, material selection and other properties to determine the criteria for
the pipeline. A computer programming Pipesim simulator is a steady state, multiphase flow for
designing and badge investigation of gas production systems. in addition to, the programmer
investigates flow line and performance of surface facility to produce full production system analysis.
The cost of setting up underwater pipelines is an important factor in the utilization of offshore natural
gas economics. A suitable design of those networks can facilitate the costs of new discovered fields
into the gathering system which leads to lower prices to the customer and causes profits. This study
considers three main problems in designing pipeline networks expansion. The first problem is the
selection of pipeline network diameters, the second problem, is

Crime Is The Most Dangerous And Challenging Event
Crime is everywhere in society and it is the most dangerous and challenging event to control. There
are many people within the world who desire to remain at peace and feel safe in the environment they
choose reside. However, criminal acts will not end unless assistance such as counseling is offered to
those individuals who desperately need psychological help. Another strategy would be to increase the
police presence with law enforcement officials. For some criminals when an officer s presence it acts
as a deterrence for any criminal activity to occur. However, others who have a passion for crime will
not care if law enforcement officials are around, because their goal is to complete the task at hand.
Other issues contribute to crimes to occur because of the lack of jobs, healthcare, and the silence yet
deadly killer which is racism. Although, everyone in the world may wish they could live without lives
being taken away or money being taken secretly never the less these acts of crime will exist regardless
of how law enforcement officials attempt to control them. Crime is one act that will remain inevitable
in the world.
Crime does not always consist of homicides. However, there are other crimes such as white collar
crimes that have devastating blow to everyone in the world. When crimes such as white collar crimes

Social Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth
In 1978, China started its economic reform, which opened the door for entrepreneurs to venture in the
rural and agricultural sectors (Naughton, 1995). This decision has led hundreds of millions of people
out of poverty and can be considered one of the most significant events in poverty reduction in the
twentieth century (Urban Springerlink, 2010). Through the newly created firms, jobs were created and
people were able to access a range of products and services which eventually effected the total
household saving which increased by 10% within approximately four years of introducing the reform
in addition to the contribution of these firms to China s economic growth (Naughton, 1995).
Entrepreneurship can be used to solve problems in the society and this paper will focus on examining
social entrepreneurship in particular starting with the social impacts of entrepreneurship, the need for
social entrepreneurship followed by characteristics and examples of these socially driven
entrepreneurship.
Not all entrepreneurs have societal benefits in their agenda when starting a new business however
social value is still generated through the creation of new jobs (12), which in turn reduces
unemployment and poverty rates (Westhead, Wright Mcelwee, 2011). For example, new start ups were
responsible for 50% of job opportunities in the U.S. from the year 1982 to 1985 (Hébert Link, 1989).

Life in Concentration Camps
The rise of Anti Semitism was affecting the Jews all over Europe. Jewish towns and neighbourhoods
were confined to ghettos starting in 1939. After living in ghettos for approximately 2 years and under
unbearable conditions, German soldiers rounded up Jews and began to place them on trains. The
experiences of Elie Wiesel and Irene Fogel Weiss are just two of the millions of stories that exist.
Their experiences in the concentration camps have many similarities as well as many differences and
not only has the Holocaust left physical scars but psychological scars too, which Viktor Frankel has
written a book about, being a psychologist and a Holocaust survivor.
When looking at the experience of Elie Wiesel, a Jew born in Transylvania, and Irene Fogel Weiss, a
Jew born in Czechoslovakia, the two stories have many similarities and differences. The book Night,
written by Elie Wiesel illustrates his experience in the Holocaust, including his first experience of
family separation and being in a concentration camp. An article written about the life of Irene Fogel
Weiss gives a clear image of her life during the Holocaust, dealing with family separation as well as
the struggle to stay healthy enough to survive. Arbeit Macht Frei was a sign outside of Auschwitz, a
concentration camp in Poland. After being deported from the ghetto in their hometown, Elie and Irene

Analysis Of The Advancement Of Postwar Order
Analysis of the Advancement of Postwar Order
By: Michelle Wyatt
PSCI 1051.001
Prof. Richard Ruderman
November 26, 2014
Ikenberry s book After Victory discusses how order is reestablished after war. In the book it explains
the different ways that order can be reestablished, and how postwar order has evolved from Balance of
Powers, to Hegemony, to present day Constitutionalism. He aims to address three main points
throughout his book: The choices that the winners of the war face in regards to establishing order, the
reasoning behind choosing their specific mode of order reestablishment, and the lasting stability of
1945 postwar order (Ikenberry 3). In my analysis I explain the different modes of postwar
reestablishment, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Balance of Power, a type of post war order, could happen when weaker states form alliances with each
other in order to counterbalance the leading state. This would prevent the leading state from having all
the power, and would prevent tyranny of the leading state. This form of balance of powers is coined
banding, because the weaker states band together (Ikenberry 24). Also this form of post war order
allows for the weaker states to have some of their postwar demands carried out. On the other end of
balance of powers there is bandwagoning, which is where the weaker states ally themselves with the
victor (Ikenberry 25). Bandwagoning ensures that the weaker states will not get oppressed and also
guarantees them protection due to their alliance with the leading state.
Although balance of powers seems like a great idea, it is not very stable. Alliances are constantly
making sure that they are in equilibrium in order to maintain balance with the opposing force. This
causes for shifts and gains in alliances. For example, if one side gains another ally, the other side must
find another ally as well. This constant checking of balance results in very complex, global alliances.
The downside to this is that when one member of your alliance is tampered with then the entire

Volvulus (Malrotation of the Gut)
A malrotation of the gut occurs when something goes wrong during development the small intestine
(gut or small bowel). When this occurs, the small intestine is not fixed in the abdomen (belly). The
intestines are held by just their blood supply. When the intestines become twisted, because they are not
fastened down, it cuts off their blood supply. It is much like a hose getting kinked. This loss of blood
supply leads to damage to the gut. This condition is also called volvulus.
SYMPTOMS
Most often this abnormality shows up during the first month of life. Sometimes it may not produce
symptoms until adulthood. Usually the abdomen becomes distended and there is vomiting of bilious
material. This is greenish or bile stained vomitus. There is usually cramping and intermittent
abdominal pain.
DIAGNOSIS ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an X ray study using contrast material. Contrast material is something given to the baby by
mouth that shows the inside of the stomach and small bowel better. This X ray shows an abnormal
position of the first part of the small bowel located where the small bowel first leaves the stomach.
TREATMENT
A volvulus is a surgical emergency. This must be corrected immediately to preserve life.
The surgeon will untwist the intestine if necessary.
The surgeon will cut through the abnormal bands holding the organs in the wrong places.
The appendix will be removed. If the child were to have an appendicitis the diagnosis would be
dangerously delayed because of the abnormal position.
After the operation, it is extremely unlikely the bowel will rotate again. The body has internal scarring
called adhesions that hold things in

  • 3. Evaluation Of Open Reduction And Internal Fixation Of... Evaluation of perioperative variations in the levels of inflammatory markers in open reduction and internal fixation of maxillofacial fractures INTRODUCTION Infectious complications are commonly encountered following ORIF (Open reduction and internal fixation) ever since it has been adopted as a treatment modality for maxillofacial fractures. Early detection of infection can be difficult in the postoperative phase as many signs and symptoms may actually mimic a SIRS (Systemic inflammatory response syndrome). There is a wealth of literature supporting the use of various inflammatory markers in diagnosis and monitoring of treatment of infectious complications in post operative patients[1 4]. Various authors have studied markers including (Total leucocyte count) TLC, CRP(C reactive protein), AST (Aspartate Transaminase) and ALT (Alanine Transaminase) in patients with SIRS and sepsis [5]. Behaviour of inflammatory markers and their correlation to infection in the postoperative phase have been evaluated in various disciplines of surgery. However, similar studies in maxillofacial surgery have been found to be very scarce. We therefore designed a study to evaluate perioperative variations in the levels inflammatory markers in Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) of maxillofacial fractures. An attempt was made to establish an acceptable range of variations in the values of inflammatory markers in ORIF and co relate these variations to the length of surgery, type of ... • 4. What Is Lucretius Argument Against Religion Lucretius, a Roman philosopher, was greatly inspired by the teachings of Epicurus. In Lucretius s book, On the Nature of Things, he expands on many Epicurean principles and at times even alters them. Nothing comes from nothing , the first principle that Lucretius endorses, is essential to his argument for the origin of the world. Using this principle, Lucretius against the accepted Roman religion by adding the concept that divine intervention is not the root of creation, instead he gives credit to atoms. These atoms, or beginnings of things, he reasoned, came together to form masses called bodies. The earth was one such body, and it yielded many bodies within it. This entire process, governed by nature, is what Lucretius believes created the world and everything in it. However, Lucretius falls short in his argument against religion by indirectly asserting that nature is in fact a God. Although Lucretius explicitly states in Book 5 of On the Nature of Things, that the true being behind the world s beginning, Mother Nature, is not a divine being, the characteristics he assigns her prove otherwise. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, he passionately asserts that the earth herself and Nature [is] the artificer of things . (Lucretius 5. 243 244). Explaining his theory, he articulates that atoms, an integral part of nature, operate under circumstances in which they swerve a little (2. 219) causing collisions. These collisions led to the formation of things, both animate and inanimate. In other words, these atoms successfully created the earth and all the creatures living upon it. In essence, rather than deny the creation of the world by an unknown force or even by chance, Lucretius simply substitutes the role of the Roman gods with Nature. Nature, thus, well deserves the name of mother , well deserves the title creator, and well deserves the title ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Ferrari Engines, Bicycle Brake Written Analysis #3 The article I decided to read for the third analysis was Ferrari Engines, Bicycle Brakes. This article was written by Edward Hallowell who is a psychiatrist that has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia. Both of these disorders individually come with a lot of different struggles. Throughout the article, Hallowell discussed his struggle as a student and what/ who helped him get through school. One of the first things Hallowell mentions was his first grade teacher, Mrs. Eldredge. She seemed to be his support system when it came to reading aloud during class. From other research, I know that this can be very difficult for students with dyslexia since they read slower, letters can get switched around, and whole words can look switched around. Mrs. Eldredge stood by his side while he read, so that no one would laugh at his stuttering or stammering (Hallowell, 2012). I believe this was a nice move by her because she recognized his struggles, and did everything she could to make him feel comfortable reading aloud in class. He ends up crediting many of his gifted teachers for him becoming a good student and getting through college to get his degree as a psychiatrist (Hallowell, 2012). The next part of the article, Hallowell gives suggestions to teachers on how to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He states, It s like a Ferrari a race car. You have the power to win races and become a champion. However, you do have one problem. You have bicycle brakes. Your brakes just aren t strong enough to control your powerful brain, so you can t slow down or stop when you need to (Hallowell, 2012). I honestly love how he put this because it s true. I know several ADHD students and a few who seem to have dyslexia, and they are willing to work hard, but get distracted by the smallest of things. If they worked hard on strengthening their brakes , I know that many of them have the potential to be bright ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Education In Education And Education Throughout my life I ve encountered many educators whether through elementary, middle school, high school, or college level. My involvement with these educators throughout the years would become very instrumental in not only my learning, but also becoming an educator. Educators can range from parents, who become our primary educators of life as a child throughout adolescents, and eventually adulthood. A parent will educate us as youth on what we perceive as home training, family values and morals. Preachers can be educators as they educate you on the bible and the way of life. Teachers who serve as a master educator, serves a vital part of a child s learning and learning needs. Teaching in most cases is showing or demonstrating what you ve experienced and applying that task to someone else. I reflect back to my early years as a child and my little league baseball coach teaching how to become a baseball player. Although I know how to throw and catch a ball, I didn t know the fundamentals of the game. One example I can think of is the coach teaching me how to slide when stealing a base. The example he would use is pretend you re running on a slip in slide when stealing a base. I also think back to my kindergarten teacher teaching my how to tie my shoes or how to recite my ABCs. Learning comes when you take what was taught and apply it to that particular frame. I remember when I leaned my alphabets, and I couldn t wait to recite them to my family. Learning is also is also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Oleanna by David Mamet Essay Oleanna by David Mamet The fast pace, repetition and interruptions evident in the interaction between Carol and John are clear illustrations of the unwritten contest to have the last word and be right in act 1. The use of these dramatic and linguistic techniques are what make the interaction between the two characters so fascinating. Both are constantly struggling to keep their dignity and reputation. On page 11, Carol pleads teach me. Teach me . Although this is imperative, the context in which it is said suggests that she uses it passively in quite a begging, pleading manner. The active verb also demonstrates her impatience towards education and frustration with not understanding. In response, John pleads ?I?m trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here it would seem that both john and carol do not understand each other and, again, John is viewed as the more authoritative and powerful one. The interruptions present in act 1 are significant to the play?s agenda. Although the audience is meant to sympathise with Carol for her lack of understanding and the professor?s approach to teaching her individually, the telephone calls, interrupting the conversation at key points, represents a connection to the world outside of the room where the entire play takes place. It gives the audience an immediate insight to John?s life so that we do not dismiss him for his difficulties with expressing himself or his arguments. Mamet, having then made John into a ?3D character? is then able to introduce him as realer person, showing his true emotions more and more towards the end of the play. Without this link to the outside world, which is often forgotten in a context such as this, John would seem pompous, intolerant, incompetent and unprofessional. Mamet has carefully constructed the interaction and language to show the power corruption between the two and is successful in balancing the two sides of the argument. A watching audience would very easily be able to choose which side they believed right. It can also be viewed that Mamet uses language to oppress others. The frost depth differ depends on the climate conditions of that area, the heat transfer properties of the soil and adjacent materials, and on nearby heat sources. • 10. Comparing Omissions In A Clockwork Orange And The Novel The film A Clockwork Orange and the novel A Clockwork Orange are like fraternal twins. Indeed they share the same foundation, but there are disparities between the two that restrict them from being recognizably identical. The film contains plot modifications and omissions that lead the story astray from what Burgess originally intended. The first difference is actually the very first sentence. The novel begins with a quote that is reused throughout the story: What s it going to be then, eh? The film omits the sentence from all appropriate parts of the story, completely disregarding its significance. Another bothersome omission is the old man with the books on crystallography. In the novel, Alex and his crew beat the man in the beginning of the book and then the man and his crew beat Alex near the end. This role switch symbolizes ignorant youth disrupting the society that was paved by their wise elders, and then the fall of youth by their ignorance. Instead, the film skips forward to chapter two (omitting Alex s advantage play with the old ladies) to the scene with the singing homeless man. The omission changes the meaning of the role switch to that of the elite treading upon the subclass and the subclass attaining revenge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most troubling omission is reference to the title. The novel actually uses the phrase like clockwork orange. First Alex sees the words in the HOME cottage, and then he regurgitates them back in appropriate context when he feels as though the correction system is mistreating him. This emphasizes the topic of moral choice mentioned throughout the novel. The author stressed the importance of moral choice but the screenwriter labeled the topic minutia and only gave a slight shout out to it within a short monologue from the prison Charlie on Alex s fourteenth day ... Yellow Face began as a reaction to the casting of a Caucasian as an Asian role in the Broadway play M. Butterfly but unraveled to be a challenge of the status quo and stereotypes. In the play, almost all the actors were cast to represent multiple characters, but I was mostly impressed by the performances of the father Sab Shimono since he added an emotional appeal, the protagonist of the play, Ryan Yu, due to his alert reactions, and Christopher Gorham through his emphasis on his role as an Asian. His reaction was revealed when Yu spoke to his father about the incident with Gorham in the middle of the night. Yu was at his desk already a little drunk and as he spoke with his father he portrayed a guilty voice and in the scene he also took some pills. By having this conversation in midst of the night, and by mixing pills with alcohol, all of these small gestures revealed his distraught composer and his stressful temperament. Furthermore, when Gorham was asked questions by Asian American students, Yu instantly replied for him and he invented the story of Gorham s Siberian Jewish descent. Throughout this whole scene, Yu acted confused and angered, which were all shown through his facial response and his tense body language as he bit his nails and continually spilled out new details to corroborate his story of Gorham with a shaky voice in hope to cover his mistake. Thanks to his decision, Macbeth will then increasingly become psychopathically insane, and develop a mind of what we consider today, a mass murder. The poem Carrickfergus was written by an Irish writer called Louis MacNeice in The 20th Century. It was written in four line stanzas and now I am going to analyse this poem and talk about each stanza. In the first line of the first stanza, we notice that the child Louis MacNeice is using specific detail in his poem as he says he was born in Belfast between the mountain and the gantries. MacNeice also tells us that his father was a rector and he was banned forever from the candles of the Irish poor; again he is showing divisions by saying the Irish are poor. In this same stanza he talks about the Chichesters who are a rich Irish family. The war then starts and Louis uses sensory images; sight and sound. The sight images he uses are the horse with long Dummies hanging from gibbets for bayonet practice, and the sound images he uses is sentry s challenge echoing all day long. These images make the poem more realistic. He then goes on and states that a Yorkshire terrier ran to the gate lodge, marched at ease and sang, Who killed Cock Robin ? Imagery is the process by which you can create, modify or strengthen pathways important to the co ordination of your muscles, by training purely within your mind. Imagery rests on the important principle that you can exercise these parts of you brain with imputes from our imagination rather than from your sences: the parts of the brain that you train with imagery experience imagined and real inputs similarly, with the real inputs being merely more vividly experienced (Rainer 1987). Simulation is similar to imagery in that it seeks to improve the quality of training by teaching your brain to cope with circumstances that would not be otherwise met until an important competition was reached. Simulation, however, is carried out by making your physical training circumstances as similar as possible to the quot;real thing quot; for example by bringing in crowds of spectators, by having performances judged, or by inviting press to a training session (Rainer 1987). Deciding your Commitment to your sport is possibly the most important quot;Sports Psychology quot; decision you will make. Literary Analysis Of Revelation By Flannery OConnor Revelation Among many diseases, judgment is an epidemic virus within the human mind; more dangerously with the lack of discernment can create a toxic atmosphere and such intoxication is highlighted within the short story, Revelation, by Flannery O Connor. The story is set in the south, and revolves around an irrational yet religious character, name Mrs. Turpin, who overlooks her own flaws to cast judgments on others. The author uses language, irony, and archetypes within the story to present that judgement is a form of unconscious self deception that causes hypocritical behavior and ultimately self agitation. The author demonstrates this by having the characters cast judgment upon each other, which makes the act of passing judgment on to others an infectious disease fed by society. The usage of informal language in the beginning of the story, produces transparent characters by exposing their flaws through their speech. Opening with the reckless announcement addressed by Mrs.Turpin, I wish I could reduce (3). in front of strangers had marked her hasty character. To further describe her subject, Davis uses body markers such as: race, gender, and class identification and limited language through her characters in order to shed light on the oppressive chains of industrial capitalism. Influenced by the events going on around her during the American Civil War (1861 1865), Davis focuses and addresses her short literary realism story towards the middle and upper class entrepreneurs who were polluting the Industrial Revolution. As new mills and factories were being established to only on produce profits, at the expense of lower class workers. Who, mostly consisted of, unskilled peasants, immigrants, laborers, and farmers. His message about totalitarian government is that it is never peaceful. Those under a totalitarian government who are not completely agreed would be killed, much like today in China or Cuba. Oceania could be called a Negative Utopia , much like how Orwell was trying to get the public to tell about totalitarianism. Orwell wanted people to realize that the only way to survive in a totalitarian of government as to be a slave of that government. • 31. The Accomplishment of Gertrude B. Elion Elion accomplished a lot in her 81 years working. She started out teaching biochemistry at New York hospital school of nursing, and then she was an unpaid chemistry lab assistant. She stuck with this job, hoping to eventually get paid and even made $20 a week, which is one of the reasons she was able to attend New York University (Koenig, 2006). She scrimped and saved and had help from her boyfriend, Leonard Canter (McGrayne, 2002). While in school, she taught as a teacher in training as well as a substitute (Elion, 1988). At the same time she was doing research for her Master s at night and on the weekends to keep up. She eventually got a job doing analytical work for a food company. She did gain excellent instrumentation skills in this job even though she thought of it as quite boring. After this, Johnson and Johnson hired her, but that was short lived. Many people wanted to work with Elion, but she refused many job offers and agreed to work with George Hitchings at Burroughs Wellcome Company. IV: Scientific Contributions George Hitchings allowed Elion a lot more freedom. She was able to perform research at her own pace, which she loved because she was highly motivated to learn as much as possible, as fast as possible. She got involved with areas outside of chemistry, like immunology, pharmacology, and virology (McGrayne, 2002). Little was known about enzymes or nucleic acids at the time, so her main focus was on purines. Hitchings would always let Elion know that he was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Should 16 And 16 Year Olds Be Allowed To Vote In the article, Takoma Park 16 year old savors his history making moment at the polls , by Annys Shin, it is said that Ben Miller a 16 year old boy walked into the toll booth at Takoma Park Community Center and was planned to do something about the fact that 16 year olds cannot vote in the election. This brings up an interesting argument of whether or not 16 and 17 year olds should be allowed to vote. People will argue that 16 and 17 year olds do not know what they are doing or just have a lack of interest and that is a reason why some say no to letting them vote but others say that it could mean the difference in the election. 16 and 17 year olds should be allowed to vote because once they start voting they may take into consideration ... The Effect Of Capitalist Values On The Prioritization Of The Effect of Capitalist Values on the Prioritization of Obesity in the United States of America In theory, the US is capable of providing a varied and healthy diet for all; yet why are more than one third (36.5%) of US adults obese (Ogden)? Broadly defined, the World Health Organization states that obesity is a condition in which the presence of abnormal or excessive fat accumulation presents a risk to health ( Obesity ). However, regardless of the growing prevalence and incidence rates, capitalism has increasingly driven consumer behavior, perpetuating the wide spread of this health issue. To begin with, the negligence of obesity in the United States today is rooted on the prevalence of greed that has become a leading force in the economy and society. By putting profits above consumer health due to the fear of not attaining the benefits of more wealth, greed has become a socially accepted and justified trait. In a society where money is at the center of all decisions and activities, it is unsurprising that the government has chosen the low hanging fruit for convenience s purpose by neglecting this health issue and focusing on gaining profit instead. A clear example of this was in 2009 when the Obama administration first issued a stimulus bill to fight against obesity through community level anti obesity campaigns. Unfortunately, at first the bill was not passed as the cost was too expensive and it also came at a time where numerous households and firms were facing economic hardships. DesJarlais, a leading US physician justifies the rejection of the bill by stating it was absurd for the federal government to spend billions demonizing certain foods and trying to affect people s personal dietary choices...it makes absolutely no sense that federal and city agencies would aggressively advertise against American products made by American workers (Crabtree). • 38. Social Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth In 1978, China started its economic reform, which opened the door for entrepreneurs to venture in the rural and agricultural sectors (Naughton, 1995). This decision has led hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and can be considered one of the most significant events in poverty reduction in the twentieth century (Urban Springerlink, 2010). Through the newly created firms, jobs were created and people were able to access a range of products and services which eventually effected the total household saving which increased by 10% within approximately four years of introducing the reform in addition to the contribution of these firms to China s economic growth (Naughton, 1995). Entrepreneurship can be used to solve problems in the society and this paper will focus on examining social entrepreneurship in particular starting with the social impacts of entrepreneurship, the need for social entrepreneurship followed by characteristics and examples of these socially driven entrepreneurship. Not all entrepreneurs have societal benefits in their agenda when starting a new business however social value is still generated through the creation of new jobs (12), which in turn reduces unemployment and poverty rates (Westhead, Wright Mcelwee, 2011). For example, new start ups were responsible for 50% of job opportunities in the U.S. from the year 1982 to 1985 (Hébert Link, 1989). • 40. Life In Concentration Camps In Night By Irene Wiesel And... Life in Concentration Camps The rise of Anti Semitism was affecting the Jews all over Europe. Jewish towns and neighbourhoods were confined to ghettos starting in 1939. After living in ghettos for approximately 2 years and under unbearable conditions, German soldiers rounded up Jews and began to place them on trains. The experiences of Elie Wiesel and Irene Fogel Weiss are just two of the millions of stories that exist. Their experiences in the concentration camps have many similarities as well as many differences and not only has the Holocaust left physical scars but psychological scars too, which Viktor Frankel has written a book about, being a psychologist and a Holocaust survivor. When looking at the experience of Elie Wiesel, a Jew born in Transylvania, and Irene Fogel Weiss, a Jew born in Czechoslovakia, the two stories have many similarities and differences. The book Night, written by Elie Wiesel illustrates his experience in the Holocaust, including his first experience of family separation and being in a concentration camp. An article written about the life of Irene Fogel Weiss gives a clear image of her life during the Holocaust, dealing with family separation as well as the struggle to stay healthy enough to survive. Analysis Of The Advancement Of Postwar Order Analysis of the Advancement of Postwar Order By: Michelle Wyatt PSCI 1051.001 Prof. Richard Ruderman November 26, 2014 Ikenberry s book After Victory discusses how order is reestablished after war. In the book it explains the different ways that order can be reestablished, and how postwar order has evolved from Balance of Powers, to Hegemony, to present day Constitutionalism. He aims to address three main points throughout his book: The choices that the winners of the war face in regards to establishing order, the reasoning behind choosing their specific mode of order reestablishment, and the lasting stability of 1945 postwar order (Ikenberry 3). In my analysis I explain the different modes of postwar reestablishment, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Balance of Power, a type of post war order, could happen when weaker states form alliances with each other in order to counterbalance the leading state. This would prevent the leading state from having all the power, and would prevent tyranny of the leading state. This form of balance of powers is coined banding, because the weaker states band together (Ikenberry 24). Also this form of post war order allows for the weaker states to have some of their postwar demands carried out. On the other end of balance of powers there is bandwagoning, which is where the weaker states ally themselves with the victor (Ikenberry 25). Bandwagoning ensures that the weaker states will not get oppressed and also guarantees them protection due to their alliance with the leading state. Although balance of powers seems like a great idea, it is not very stable. Alliances are constantly making sure that they are in equilibrium in order to maintain balance with the opposing force. This causes for shifts and gains in alliances. For example, if one side gains another ally, the other side must find another ally as well. This constant checking of balance results in very complex, global alliances. The downside to this is that when one member of your alliance is tampered with then the entire ... When this occurs, the small intestine is not fixed in the abdomen (belly). The intestines are held by just their blood supply. When the intestines become twisted, because they are not fastened down, it cuts off their blood supply. It is much like a hose getting kinked. This loss of blood supply leads to damage to the gut. This condition is also called volvulus. SYMPTOMS Most often this abnormality shows up during the first month of life. Sometimes it may not produce symptoms until adulthood.
