This document provides a historical overview of the development of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a therapeutic procedure over the last 200 years. It discusses how electrical stimulation of the brain has been used since ancient times for various medical purposes. In the 18th-19th centuries, scientists began systematically investigating the functions of the brain using electrical stimulation. In the 20th century, advances like electroencephalography, stereotactic surgery, and lesioning helped establish DBS. The first modern therapeutic application was electroconvulsive therapy in 1938. DBS is now used to treat various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
