Video Game Evaluation

Generating Ideas
• How were you at developing ideas for your game? Did you
produce a lot of ideas or could you have developed them
further?
– I thought I was good. I had this game idea for a long time so I had clear ideas.
• Why was generating ideas important to your project?
– It helped make a unique and appealing game.
• What were the strengths, weaknesses and areas for
development regarding you idea generation
– Strengths:
• I knew what I wanted to make early on
• I had good time management
• I have considerable knowledge about games
– Weaknesses:
• I don’t know. Like I said I had this idea for a long time so everything
was well developed before we did this
Generating Ideas
• Include images from your idea generation and mood boards.
Comparison to Original Intentions
• Do your planning documents (proposal, mood board, sketches, idea
generation) reflect your final game concept?
– Yes. I have followed my plans closely so I wouldn’t fall behind on time
• Did you make any changes? Why?
– I removed the idea of the gameplay turning into a fighting game like Street Fighter
because if I was going to have multiplayer everyone needed to play but if it was a
fighting game the screen would get cluttered and there would be no room for the other
players. This would also be a problem for boss battles because 4 players would take
down a boss easily since the boss would have to deal with 4 people. The body of the
golem was originally supposed to be made from 2 rocks but I changed it into one rock
because it was easier to draw.
• Include images comparing your sketches/mood board/idea generation
with your final products (scan in/take pictures on your phone/print screen
PP slides etc.).
Fitness for Purpose
• Did you complete your project according to the brief? Look at the Client
Requirements in the work book and compare your work with what you were
asked to produce. Also consider your original instructions;
– You have been asked to create a new Video Game of your choice for 16-19 year olds.
– This can be any genre of game for a platform of your choice (consoles, PC, handheld, mobile)
– Graphics must be pixel art and demonstrate gameplay.
– I have designed my game according to the brief and with my audience in mind. Most people in
my questionnaire said they often play games on either Xbox One and PC so my game will be
available for both platforms. You can see this by my PC box art. My target gender was both
because golems don’t have genders. Before making my game I have researched similar games
and used SurveyMonkey to create my questionnaire to find out what my audience likes. My
game’s graphics are pixelated and the screenshot shows the main character walking.
• Is it appropriate for 16-19 year olds and how will it appeal to them? Is it
original enough or could you have done anything to make it different to what
already exists? Have you exported it in the correct format and size?
– My game is appropriate for 16-19 year olds because it won’t have any graphic violence and
inappropriate language. I used my survey so I could find out what appeals to my audience.
Because of my questionnaire answers I have decided that the story will be more mature like
involving a war.
Technical Qualities
• Is your work technically proficient? Do your graphics and animations reflect professional
conventions?
– I don’t think my pixel art is pro level because the art doesn’t look as detailed as most games
but I do think it’s decent enough to be appreciated. The animation on the other hand I’d say is
really good especially with every step the golem takes his entire body moves. The problem
though with the animation is that Photoshop kept on freezing so I couldn’t add anymore in the
time given.
• Discuss the strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement in reference to the
technical elements of your work; smoothness of animation, level of detail in your
characters/background.
Strengths:
– Simple but bright colours for background
– Animation is smooth and shows character
– The HP bar and the MP bar both look cool
Weaknesses/areas for improvement:
– Not very detailed characters or backgrounds
– The screenshot is not a proper loop
– Doesn’t show a point system or any form of currency
– No enemies
– No fighting
Technical Qualities
• Compare your graphics and animations to existing products. Are there any
similarities or differences? Include images of your work and similar existing
products.
– Sadly since my game is so unique with the main character I'm just going to use a beat ‘em up game with a fantasy setting.
Both have a fantasy setting
The existing game has the character’s portrait
where as my game does not
The main characters are knights instead of a golem
Both games can support 4 players
The existing game has
items but mine does not
The existing game shows the player username, their
money and their level whereas mine does not
My game is made out of pixels but the existing game is not
Similar: Blue
Differences: Red
Aesthetic Qualities
• Does your work look good? What aspects of your game’s visuals do you
like? What would you improve? How would you improve it?
• Include images
Things I like:
– The Guardian Golem. I like him because he looks original.
– The HP and MP bar. It really suits the rock theme.
– The colours are bright which makes the game look better.
Things I would improve:
– The current background is quite simple. I would try to make it look more interesting by
adding more detail.
– I would add a point score somewhere because I wanted to do that with this screenshot
but I forgot to add it because of time.
– I could add different colours to the golem because since he is made out of rocks
wouldn’t some be different?
Time Management
• Did you manage your time well? Did you complete your project on time or
would your assets have improved with additional time?
– I do believe that I have finished on time but I think some things may have been better
with additional time.
• What would you have done if you had more time to produce your work?
– My app logo to me looks very basic with the main character on the front with almost a
plain background. If I had more time I believe I could of made a better app logo like
using the shape of the app to make a much more detailed image of the main character’s
head. I would also try to add more detail to the background of the screenshot and add a
point score. I would also liked to add a bit more colour to the golem and see if it works
or not. I would also like to add different colours to player 2-3-4 like player 2 has a grey
body with a blue light from eyes.
