In this interview, I talking with a newcomer to the
series of Monster Hunter. My brother. He just started
playing the game on release day (January 2018) and
has not played a Monster Hunter game ever up to this
point. He is age 24, been gaming since he was a kid and
lives in a flat in Selby with his girlfriend who also plays
the game. In my interview, I will be asking him his
opinion of Monster Hunter World so far, how he thinks
of the monsters, his favourite equipment and if he
would recommend this game to newcomers like him.
Do you like Monster Hunter World and if so why?
Yes, I do like MHW. The game is a very good balance
of fantasy mixed with a good RPG format which
seems to be the go-to genre at the moment for
games. The whole premise of the game appeals to
me.
What are the selling pointsof thisgame?
The big selling point for this game for I feel is that
there isn't anything else like it on the market today.
When else do you get to go hunt big monsters with a
little cat friend? Or simply use some absolutely crazy
weapon designs.
Multiplayer is definitely a big factor for me personally
as I can use it as a social game with my friends and
family.
What weaponsdo you use and why?
2. I use the Charge Blade. Well erm... I'm not too sure
why I liked the idea of having an all-rounder class with
a sword and shield so I suppose the giant axe is just a
plus. It isn't a weapon to use for the faint of heart as it
takes a lot of trial and error to find out how to use it to
its full capacity but well worth it once it has been
mastered
Do you have a favourite monster and why?
I suppose it's a bit of an odd one, but possibly the
Pukei-Pukei. It doesn't come across as offering too
much but it's secretly lethal. Once mastered it can be
a relatively straightforward hunt but it's just full of
poison which is just a pain when trying to actually get
it. Plus its armour looks pretty cool. Notable mentions
to both the Odogaron and Diablos.
What wasthe hardest monster you faced and did you die
first try?
Bit of a curveball... But an Odogaron. This big Red,
hound on steroids is so incredibly quick and it's just a
massive task to try and keep up with this monster. I
didn't actually die on my first attempt which yeah does
surprise me somewhat haha. But as you get further
and further through the game you soon get to some
big bad guys and they test you.
Out of all the mapsin Monster Hunter World which isyour
favourite?
3. All of the maps (especially when playing in 4K) look
incredible so it's all square from an aesthetic point of
view.
Is the game easy or difficult to learn?
The game does a good job of teaching you just
enough to survive against the first 2 monsters and
then boy does it get more complicated. But these
awkward controls and complex dynamics are what
you slowly begin to love and then once you get to
grips with it you'll be having so much fun (and
sometimes not so much fun).
Would you recommend thisgame to a friend?
Yes, 100%.
In summary, my brother enjoys this game. He likes how
unique this game is compared to other games. He likes
the big monster, the crazy weapons, multiplayer, the
maps and especially the Palico (once he and his
girlfriend saw that they could create their own cat friend
they instantly call it “THE BEST GAME EVER!”) He
mentioned that once he got to understand the controls
and the complex dynamics the game became very fun
but sometimes not so much fun. What he’s saying is
(and I know this because he is my brother) that while he
has got better, the monsters have also got even more
difficult which makes him very angry every time when
make his character gets dizzy. (To be fairhe is a very
angry person.)
4. While my brother had me (a Monster Hunter veteran)
to help him not everybody will have someone to help
them understand the game. Monster Hunter World may
be the most beginner friendly game in the franchise, it
still has instances where newer players will have
difficulty understanding like “What does EZ shock trap
mean?” “What weapon should I use?” “How do I play
with friends?” or if they want general advice on how to
play the game. Some of these problems could be solved
through googling them however it would be so much
easier if somebody told you them, right? Thankfully the
Monster Hunter community has made a website called
“Adopt-a-Hunter” where veterans can assist any players
who may be struggling, looking for guidance, or seeking
a mentor. They provide a 1-on-1 learning environment
where they teach you the basics and passing knowledge
in order to make newer players more confident and
comfortable playing on their own or in a group. The
website also has an area where you find information,
guides and other hunters who are open to any players
joining the hunt. An important thing to note is that the
guides will not do the quests for you. They can join and
help but they will not kill the monster if you’re doing
nothing. The monster hunter community is very
welcoming towards newcomers so if you are either a
beginner or interested in buying the game, always know
that the community of Monster Hunter will be eager
help you out.

Monster List:
Anjanath:
The Anjanath is a T-Rex like monster that roams around
the Ancient Forest as one of the top predators in the
7. area. While not being the apex predator, it still wins in
turf wars against most other monsters in the Ancient
Forest. The Anjanath will also be the first, true challenge
newer players will have to go through in order to
progress through the game. This monster most deadly
part is its jaws while the safest is its legs. This monster
will start to breath fire when enraged and you can tell
when it’ll start to is when it’s neck will start to glow red.
When it’s actually breaths fire on you, it will do
enormous damage as well as causing fire blight. There is
one way of stopping the fire attack and that’s beating
it’s face in. Once you hit it enough the fire inside of it
will explode in its mouth causing it to fall down and
leaving it vulnerable for attacks. Anjanath is weakest to
water so if you make a water weapon you’ll have an
easier time with it.
Legiana:
This winged wyvern can only be found in the Coral
Highlands. It is also the only true predator in the
Highlands so it has little competition against other
monsters. Legiana is the first and only monster that can
do ice damage. Legiana mainly fights in the air while
occasionally fighting on the ground. In the air, it moves
quicker and is harder to reach with some weapons so
the ideal way to fight Legiana is when it’s on the ground
especially with melee weapons. The best way to get it
on the ground is by using a flash pod while it’s in the air.
The flash will bring it down from the air and stun it long
for you to get some attacks in. You’ll mainly find it on
8. higher areas of the map especially around area 12. Area
12 is one big slope so using jumping attack will be much
easier. It is most weak against thunder and it has a low
poison resistance.
Odogaron:
Odogaron is a big, red, angry hellhound of doom and it
is the top dog of the Rotten Vail. It is known for its very
aggressive nature meaning if it breaths, it’s food. It’s so
aggressive not even the defensive Radobaan can survive
its onslaught of attacks. What worse, Odogaron can do
combo attacks. Most of it’s moves normally leads into
another so you’ll need to dodge and block a lot. This
monster can also inflict bleeding damage. Bleeding is an
effect where chunks of your health will decrease every
time you move your character. The best way to deal
with Odogaron is to wait for its combo to finish and
then attack. Weapons that can block will have an easier
time then ones that cannot. Odogaron is also very weak
to ice weapons so fighting Legiana first is
recommended.
