The document provides an evaluation of the student's factual production video. It describes the narrative and documentary styles used, including narration accompanied by visuals to relay information to viewers. The bulk of the video consisted of archival footage, interviews, and screenshots to support the narration. Rhetorical questions were also used to challenge viewers' perspectives. The student believes the content was a strength but acknowledges weaknesses in script delivery and sound mixing. An action plan is proposed to improve time management, narration skills, and technical proficiency for future productions.
2. Characteristics and Styles of my
factual production
For my production I chose to employ a few characteristic and styles that are common in a factual production which included the use of
narration to relay to the audience the information I wanted them to know and accompany the visual aspects of the video , this allows for
the viewers to sit back and relax as it is relayed to them. This is using the technique of a ‘voice of God, commentator which is never seen
by the viewer. Although my production is not a typical ‘expository documentary’ I did implement the use of editing to link together the
images and videos which back up the statements being made by the narrator. The bulk of the production was produced by using a
variety of archival footage, interviews, scenes from the show and screenshots to again support the narration. I employed the use of
several rhetorical questions to drive the main bulk of the production forward and challenge the audience’s initial views – making them
think and open their mind up to different opinions/ideas. The structure my production follows involves going from my narration
accompanied by visuals which relate to what is being said to scenes from the show which contextualise it and finally the use of archival
footage from interviews to do the sane. These sections are blended together in the video when I combine the scenes from the show and
audio from interviews with past Doctors as a sort of break from my narration. In the original script I did initially take a more objective
stance on the arguments presented and then moved onto my own opinion however after recording the narration I realised that it flowed
a lot better if I chose to focus on the negative opinions and then my own instead of bloating the video out with too many different or
similar mind-sets.
3. I think the content aspect of the video was the strongest part of the video as I am admittedly quite knowledgeable in the subject of Doctor
Who. I had a lot more to say that I was unable to put into the script and some points that originally were but had to be cut due to the time
constraints placed on the project. The paragraphs are well structured and there is a clear start/end them so the viewer is able to tell the
points apart without getting confused with what is being said. Another strength of the content that I viewed by having other people
watch my production is that it is rather engaging, even to those who are not as knowledgeable in Doctor Who because of the simplistic
nature of the video. As for the choice of music I think that the music works well with the overall video and greatly adds to the tone. The
audience is drawn into the world and instead of taking away from the content, it adds to it in a way which increases how much the
audience is invested. The calming nature of the music leads the viewer on a journey through the information, allowing for it to be digested
easily and effectively. I focused my efforts on the editing aspect of the production as it is my strongest asset. The type of narrative style I
was going for makes it so the editing is just as much a part of the video as the narrative is, without the two interweaving, the video would
simply fall apart. However the production is not without its flaws as my script delivery can definitely be improved upon, this was my first
time creating such video - I read the script far too fast which made a lot of the words inaudible to hear and I have definitely learnt a lot
which can be taken forward into future projects. There are also a couple of glaring issues with the sound mixing as throughout the video
the soundtrack and narration are at different values which are jarring to the audience’s ears. Upon seeing the video played on a large
screen, it became apparent that the purple filter I put over the video to add to the aesthetic of the video and prevent any potential
copyright doesn’t quite click with everyone. After showing the finished video to the class I went back and re-recorded the audio to the best
of my ability to improve the overall video, I also raised the contrast on the darker purple colour to make it more appealing to the audience
as a whole.
Strengths and Weaknesses
4. Decisions regarding contexts
and characteristics
The initial context for the production is that of Doctor Who which is where the overall topic of representation is streamlined into the BBC
casting a women in the role as the titular character – The Doctor for the first time in the show’s history. I then expanded this by
questioning whether the move was because they thought it was the right thing to do or for financial gain to push some sort of agenda. I
did this because there has been a massive increase in conversations about how representation in the media is handled with the release
of films like ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Love, Simon’ and believe that Doctor Who is a perfect series to focus it on due to the cultural
significance and decades it has been running. The BBC as a company have a reasonability and duty to the people to represent them in
the programmes they produce to them being publicly funded, making The Doctor a woman means that 50% of this audience is no longer
represented in the same way however the line between who they are able to represent is extremely thin due to being unable to cater for
everyone so must compromise. I find this extremely interesting as a challenge to overcome and as a topic itself so making the vocal
point of the production be around this would hopefully make it interesting for others as well. I as a viewer of the show since its revival in
2005 practically grew up with it and have expectations like everyone else but the divide in the fan’s opinions of a female Doctor has
made it even more exciting a move for the BBC, they took a risk and were prepared to go down with the ship if necessary. However in
response to the BBC being criticised for pushing an Agenda I decided to detail to the audience how the show has been doing this forever
even in the eras that they consider ‘the best’, This allowed for me to take the video in a more engaging direction as the viewer would
presumably start thinking back to the different aspects of the show’s past and realise things they missed or are intentionally
misremembering before being given some examples. In the end my aim for the video was in the end to make the audience think and talk
about representation in the media before criticising it from the star, the lack of representation in front and behind the camera is a real
issue and people need to realise when it is being forced upon an audience or is simply highlighted to better the representation.
5. Compare/contrast your production work to 2 or 3
relevant examples of professional production
How Taika Waititi and the Russos Destroyed Thor |
Video Essay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVzU0mmtxs0
Just like my own production this video by Fall Fat Videos uses narration to relay to the
audience the information and accompany the visual aspects of the video, similarly he also
makes the bulk of the production using a variety of archival footage, interviews, scenes from
the movies and graphics to again support the narration, it also follows a very similar
structure to my production as it also includes going from scenes in the movie to their
narration accompanied by visuals which relate to what is being said and scenes from the
movie which contextualise it with audio within the film. However the contents of the video is
rather different with my production being a hybrid of an informative/opinion piece whilst
‘How Taika Waititi and the Russos Destroyed Thor | Video Essay’ is as the title details more
of an informative video essay. My video is built on being a piece of content which can be
easily digested in a short amount of time whilst Fall Fat Videos’ is longer at 19 minutes and
contains a lot more comedic aspect than my own. As for the editing they both share a similar
style of having clips from their respective media mixed with narration, however in
comparison to mine the editing is a lot simpler which is understandable due to my
production being a lot shorter than theirs.
Adam Curtis – Bitter Lakes
I would say that documentaries like ‘Bitter Lakes’ by Adam Curtis are a more professional version
of my production as it shares a lot of similarities in terms of the use of archival and footage from
interviews. In comparison to my production it is a full blown documentary yet it is edited in a
similar style with having archival footage which is accompanied by his narration and the vintage
video style is also carried over from watching documentaries like this one. Curtis also uses a range
of audio from the archival footage as a part of the narrative track just as I did with the audio from
the scenes and interviews. However unlike mine it doesn’t have a backing track that plays
through the whole production. In comparison to my own video the narration is much more
confident in how he speaks and delivers the script but that is expected due to him being a
professional whilst I have done little to no work in the narration field.
6. Create an action plan based on your evaluation listing
development points for future production work
Development points for future productions
• Time Management
I will work on managing the amount of time I spend on each aspects of the work as I did initially find myself falling behind
with it. Working well within my deadlines is a good routine to get into as it will prevent and avoid stressing to get it all done
in a small amount of time.
• Narration
I will try to be more confident in what I am saying to make it clear to the audience the points that are being made as the
narration is the weakest aspect of my production even after attempting to improve it. This could also potentially expand
into the outside world as being more confident in what I am producing will make it more appealing to not only myself but
potential clients for work.
• Technical aspects
I will begin to improve my skills with Adobe Premiere Pro as I did not use it for this specific production because a lot of it had to be done at
home for various reasons and whilst I do have a version of the software at home it does not match the one used at college but I will prioritise
using it in the next production so I don’t forget how to and fall short the next time I am asked to.
