2. KEY CHARACTERISTICS
After looking through my research document, I have seen that there are an array of different
common themes displayed in successful web series episodes. This concept of a presenter in a
studio was quite common in a few of my existing products from research which is why I decided to
include it in my product. I feel it works well as it creates a very personal feel between the audience
and the presenter. This gives the audience a very warm attraction to the product therefore helps
increasing their interest in my video. Although the video creates this very personal connection
from the audience to the presenter, I also made sure that it maintained its professionalism. This
was sustained by making my shots as good as possible whilst in the studio which was achieved my
getting my lighting correct by adjusting the lights to how I wanted and also tempering with the
camera settings. This allowed me to capture my presenter in the best way possible. This technique
was also used for y interview as I wanted that to look as crisp as possible. From my researched
products, all the videos which included presenters in studious also maintained their
professionalism with their shots which is good as it overall makes the experience of the product
better. From looking at my researched products I have also noticed that the music they chose
would highly attract the products target audience. I managed to incorporate this technique into
my product. I did this by including multiple different batman sound tracks from different batman
film. This included the Batman 1989 soundtrack, the dark knight sound track, the 60s batman
theme song and the dark knight rises soundtrack. Each soundtrack are unique and effective in
their own way meaning they will attract a range of batman fans to the product.
3. KEY CHARACTERISTICS
A key characteristic of a web series episode is the intro and outro which I made sure to include in
my product. The intro introduces the audience to the product making it very important as this is
what sucks them in. All my researched products included a good intro, however they were all
different and unique. Some opened their videos with compilations of images with an overlay of
narration, others opened with a presenter talking to the camera. I decided to begin with the bat
symbol coming slowly onto the screen, this was to convey the overall theme of the product, after
that I began with the presenter sat in the studio talking to the camera and introducing the
audience to the product. This instantly creates that personal connection to the audience as it
seems he is addressing them face to face. This may attract the audience more to the product
instead of opening with images but this does really depend on the specific audience. My outro
was very similar. I wanted to end it with the presenter on camera as I feel like that the personal
address to the audience would be a good way to end. This is similar to the existing products
which included
4. CONTEXT
My videos context was similar to other existing products in some ways. For example, the reason it
was made. Some of my researched existing products were also superhero hero based meaning
that they were made for similar proposes. I feel this purpose is to either educate new superhero
fans on the subject or be an addition to already dedicated fans knowledge. However, I feel the
context of my product was very different from other products on many areas. Firstly, the budget. I
had a much smaller budget than big companies would have. For example, for one of my existing
products I researched a YouTube channel called Global Cycling Network. This channel has a much
larger budget than mine, they can afford to buy more and better equipment that my self and have
the budget to hire presenters and skilled editors. This makes their job easier than mine. However,
adding to this I may have more access to more equipment than other people. For example,
channels who don’t have a budget will to not be able to book out a studio like I can or use decent
cameras like I can get access to which means that their products may not as look as clean and
professional as mine.
My context is also different to some products as they have a much larger amount of time to
create their products. For this specific task I got set with a 5 week duration to complete the video.
This meant that I only had limited time to create what I needed to, if I had more time I may have
been able to improve some features of my product and make them look even more effective and
and a higher sense of detail to the product. The longer duration would have also allowed me to
perhaps improve my edit as after watching it, I have seen a small few aspects I could have
5. NEW SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES
This project has been nothing like I have done before. This is because I nor ally just create trailers
or videos filmed outside. This means that throughout this project I have used a number of new
skills. Firstly, filming in the studio was quite new. The only contact I have had in there before was
taking a photo for a poster which was different than how I needed to set up for filming. I made
sure the green screen was up so that I could add an image in the background whilst in the post
production stage. I used the studio to film my presenters set and also the set for the interview.
Because of this, my knowledge of how different professional lighting works has in creased and I
can now add that into my skill set. During editing, I used quite a number of different effects and
transitions. For example, I created a 60s Bat transition from the tv show from scratch. This
involved using many different effects inside of premier pro like the opacity tool and the rotation
tool, I had to add different key frames to the different clips to make the transition turn out as
effective as it has. In the future, I will now have a lot more confidence using the different specific
effects I had to use. In the product, I also used the ultra key tool so that I can add green screen
to my backgrounds. I have never had to use this tool before therefore it was new to me, I found
it quite easy to do but nevertheless is still a new skill I have learnt.
During this project, I also used a lot more video transitions. This was to switch smoothly between
cuts. In film, I don’t normally have use to that many therefore this project has really expanded
my knowledge of how they all work.
6. HOW WELL DID THE PROJECT GO?
In my opinion my project went quite well. The positive aspects of it was what I filmed. The
different clips which I filmed in the studio turned out well. The quality of the shot created a
very crisp tone and portaryed a professioanl theme for the product. This was because I
managed to set the lights up to make my shots look very effective. I also had a greenscreen
in the background. This in the end product worked well however, I could have fixed some
of the green screen shots in after effects as some sections werern’t as clear as others. In the
studio shots, I included two different batman props, a batman pop figure and a batman
water bottle. These were used to link to the theme of the product and also portary the
presnter as a huge batman fan. I felt like this was imporant as I wanted the audience to
believe and respect what he had to say. A very effevtive feature which I used was the bat
transtions which I created. I made these from scratch andf used various different tolls and
effects in prmeier to make them work as effectively as they did. I really wanted to include
these in my final product as it heavily links to the batman theme and also gives the product
a slight nastalgic feel which I feel is imporant as the 60s batman is a key element of the
video. The transtions also allowed me to cut between different sections smoothly again
adding a very professional feel the product. The music I included was alos a good choice as
every different piece was different batman themes. This was able to constantly convey the
feel of the character throughout. I also tried to chose different themes which related to
what the narroter was talking about. For example, when talking about the Burton Batman
film, the 80s batmn theme was played in the background. This was to create the right feel
7. WHAT WOULD I DO TO IMPROVE?
If I could do my product again, I would make a few improvements. Firstly, I would
improvements on my interview. I would have made sure that my interviewe would have reread
the quesrtion out in their asnwer to the question. This was because id dint wanrt to include title
cards in the final product but only did so as my interviewe didn’t read the question out. After
watching my final product, I would have alos wanted to cut my interview up and place the
differenrt clips of it throughout the product. For eample, when I ask a question abpout the 60s
batamn, have that included in the prioduct when the narrator is tlsking about 60s Batman. I feel
like this change would have given the product a much smoother and constant flow. I would
have also improved the title cards. Altought I didn’t want to use them, I feel like I couldf have
put more time into them andf make them look really effective. I don’t think they look bad but
there is definitely improvemtns which could be made.
After watching the final edit, I have also realised there is a section of the prodfuct where the
musics anticispation peaks but this occurs before the shot has finshied meaning all the build up
doesn’t really work. If I could do this again I would have cut the music differnetly to maje sure
the climax of the soudntrack was right at the end of the shot. Although the greenscreen
concept worked well, some of the shots of it were not completely perfect. This could have been
fixed and ammended in after effects making it look even more effective and professional.
