2. What are you currently doing to pursue a career in your chosen field?
At the moment there isn’t much I am doing to pursue my chosen career, however I am currently on a UAL L3
creative media course which is preparing me to go to university as I am learning the skills I will need to
progress, additionally on this course you complete projects in different aspects for example print, game
design and video and this is something that is useful for the future because it will has allowed you to gain
different experience in each field. I plan to find some work experience in the summer because this is
something that I haven’t been able to do yet and it is something that I think is important. I want to do work
experience in some type of studio because it will give me and idea to what it is like working in the industry.
3. What do you plan to do next in the pursuit of your chosen field?
I plan on completing this course (UAL Extended Diploma L3 Creative Media) and I want to go to London College of
Communication (LCC) and do the course ‘Film Production’ because this course allows for you to work with
specialist equipment such as different types of cameras and practice with lighting a scene. It also allows you in the
second year to chose a specialist field some options are directing, editing etc, and because I plan to go into the
directing field I thought this course would be beneficial in learning the specifics for the job. The course is 3 years
long and it has the opportunity to study abroad in the third year and this is something that appeals to me because
it allows you to learn from another country and the way they do things and I think that is really interesting. Whilst
on the course I plan to be doing some work experience that allows me to gain skills within the industry and it also
gives me the opportunity to meet different people that might help me progress. After finishing the course I like
the idea of continuing to do an MA and LCC offer a course that looks interesting and it is MA Film and this allows
you to progress even further in the specialist areas and the one I would choose would be directing, and on
another term you then can get a secondary role and I think this would be beneficial in progressing in the industry
because you are put into those roles and you can see what people do and learn form them etc.
4. Select at least three potential University courses that would help you further your career aims. You should state
what the course is, which university it is run by, the entry requirements and why you think it would help you.
One of the first choices of course that I want to complete at University is the BA (Hons)
Film Practice course that is run by London College of Communication. To get into this
course the entry requirements that apply to me would be to get a merit at UAL extended
diploma which is the course I am doing now. I think this course would be beneficial for
me in the future because it looks at the making of films and how to use specialist
equipment and in the second year you can choose a specialist ‘subject’ to focus on from
cinematography to directing, and this will allow me to learn topics that are specific for
what I want to do and I can focus on them
Another choice of course is BA (Hons) Film and Television which is run by London
College of Communications. This course is a little different in terms of the entry
requirements because it doesn’t state a specific grade and just says ‘UAL Extended
Diploma’. This course differs from the last because it focuses more towards the structure
of films and television so for example one of the units consist of Film ideologies and
responsibilities which focuses on the history of different films. Not only does this course
look at the theory side of films it does have a few units on practical film making and
overall I think this course could benefit me because it looks at the sections that go into a
film and the theory side of things as well as the practical side
5. The next course I have decided to look at Salford University as this is
another option for where I want to go. This course is Film Production and it
is a practical based course that allows you to work in groups and
independently, this course focuses more towards how to use certain
equipment and in the first year you go over the basics for the equipment
and you learn how to run and direct shoots and plan properly. As well as
doing practical work this course looks at the theory of films and the
evolution throughout history. The entry requirements for this course
include 112-118 UCAS points or DMM-DDM, I think this course would be
beneficial in the future because it allows me to learn different aspects to
the industry from lighting and camerawork to running the shoots
I have looked at another course that is run by Lincoln University, This
course is similar to the previous ones talked about, however this one is
much more structured to what you have to do unlike the others which
allowed you to explore different parts. In the first year it is mostly theory
based and in the second and third year they are more practical based. The
entry requirements for this course are DMM, and I think it would be
beneficial for the future because this university is cheaper than London
which means I will have time to focus on my course rather than working
too much and it is also closer to home so I will have a support system, and
it offers similar opportunities to the previous discussed courses which will
allow me to excel in the industry
6. Another university that I would consider is ‘Edinburgh
University’ and I like the look of the course BA Film
and Television. In this course it is similar to the one in
London however it looks at the theory side as well as
production, the entry requirements that are
applicable to me is Merit. Additionally you get the
opportunity to study abroad and this is something
that appeals to me because it is something that I want
to do
‘Edinburgh Napier University’ looks good and the film course is specified
towards the production side of things. The entry requirements are Merit
and you study similar things to the other universities however this course is
4 years which is different to the other universities as they are only 3. And I
think this is because in the third year you go study abroad and there are
multiple choices for example Melbourne, Queensland, New York, Toronto
and Germany. Additionally the 4th year is dedicated to a dissertation and
preparing for a job in the industry and you do a short film during the fourth
year as well. This course would help me because it specifies which areas of
the industry you want to continue in
7. What type of work experience do you think you would need to help you in your future career? How might you
be able to find work experience placements? If you could pick anywhere to do work experience, where would it
be and why?
I think work experience will be key in gaining some experience in the industry because it allows you to work in the
industry and see how everything runs outside of university courses and it allows you to put the things you learn
into practice, It also allows you to network and meet different people that may help you progress in the future.
The type of work experience I think would be beneficial is being on a set for a film or TV show because it would
allow me to get a feel for what sets are like and how things run, to find these opportunities I think it would be
better in a city because they have studios like the BBC and ITV which offer work experience for 6/8 weeks and this
would allow me to see how things run behind the scenes. I like the idea of going into the directing field of film, so
gaining as much experience as possible in different aspects would be beneficial for the future, so having some
work experience which allows me to work with the cameras and the lighting as well as the editing side of it would
be ideal however the industry is quite competitive so any sort of experience would be beneficial.
8. What specific skills do you need to develop? There should be a mix of industry specific skills and also
personal development points. When you identify these, come up with suggestions as to how you might
make those improvements.
Regarding industry specific skills I think that I need to work on the lighting side of things so for example when
I am filming for something I think I should focus a bit more on the lighting especially if it is a photo because
good lighting helps in post production. Additionally I think it would be useful to learn more techniques
regarding camerawork and how I can change certain settings to get a better quality of footage so for example
when filming try changing some of the settings so the footage isn’t as noisy because this is something that is
difficult to get rid of in post production. To make these improvements I think it is a case of just practicing
when I get the chance and watching some YouTube videos to learn about different things, something that is
useful is watching people demonstrate the different effects on Photoshop or Premier Pro because you can
watch the videos then give it a go yourself and that is a good way to learn new things. One of the personal
development points that I need to develop is teamwork because a big part of the industry is working as a
team and it is something I haven’t had to do before so I think doing a small group project would be beneficial
because it would give me the chance to work as a team. Additionally I think I need to work on leadership skills
especially if I want to go into the directing field of the industry as you have to lead a team, as I sometimes just
let other people give their ideas etc. I think to improve this the small group projects would be beneficial
because you're not leading a massive group but you still have to make those decisions
9. In 5 years time I will…
The 1st Year will be the second year of the course I am doing and I hope to be working at a consistent level as I
would like to achieve a merit or possibly a distinction so I then have the best possible chance of getting into my
first choice of university. The course will run up until May/June time in 2021, in September/October I will want to
be attending London College of Communication as this is my first choice of university however if I don’t get into
that one some other choices are: Edinburgh Napier University and Salford University. If I do get into my first
choice of university I want to be doing the BA (Hons) in Film practice as this is a course that appeals to me as it
includes specific areas in the industry you want to work in and you learn according to these. In the 2nd year it
will be the end to the first year of Uni and then in September start the second year. In this year I will do well in
the first year and be comfortable to move into the second year, In the summer I plan to do some networking
within the industry and I hope to gain some experience working in the industry maybe with the BBC or ITV etc
and different studios. Then depending on the university, I go to, the 2nd year of Uni will allow me to study abroad
for a year and if I get into UAL then it gives the opportunity to go to Boston college of communication. In the 3rd
year it will be the last year of university if I go to UAL and I hope to get a good grade then I plan to get some
work experience for a few months because this will give me the opportunity to see what it is like working in the
industry. In the 4th year I want to look into doing further education in MA directing however I am not sure where
to go to complete this course, then by the 5th year I hope to have a stable job in the industry that will allow me
to work my way up.
