5 YEAR PLAN.
By Tegan Arthur
What are you currently doing to pursue a career in your chosen field?
I am currently doing a course in creative media and technology. However in my free time I have started
to create designs on templates of cars to help me get a better understanding on what designs look
better on what car but also to help me to get towards the career I want to do.
I am also getting a couple of requests to create designs for people for their cars so that they can go get it
wrapped. This is also another way to help me get into the career that I want to do, which is car graphics,
because it gives me a rough idea of what I could potentially be doing if I ever got into doing that job as a
living.
What do you plan to do next in the pursuit of your chosen field?
After doing the second year of this course that I am currently studying. I plan to either get into an
apprenticeship doing car graphics, travelling and doing a course on car graphics or going to university and
studying graphics.
I will either do one of the first two options or if it does mean I have to go to university. I will do a graphics or
design course at a local university like York or leeds.
Select at least three potential University courses that would help you further your career aims.
You should state what the course is, which university it is run by, the entry requirements and why
you think it would help you.
Three courses in university that would potentially help me to get closer to the career I want to do, would
be graphic design at Leeds art university which is a 3 year course. However for this course there is no
specific requirement as they welcome people with a wide range of grades and experience to enter the
course. This course could possible help me as its to do with graphics which is a little part of the specific
career I want to do.
Another university I would potential go to would be Nottingham tent university, again this would be
another graphic design which is a 3 year course. But the entry requirements are A-levels – BBC or
equivalent; or
BTEC Extended Diploma – DMM; or 112 UCAS Tariff points from three A-levels or equivalent
qualifications; and
GCSEs – English and Maths or Science grade C / 4. This course could help me get to the career I want
because its to do with graphics but also creating something to make customers or clients happy which
car graphics does.
Finally a third university I may attend would be York st johns university and its a 3 year course in full time
education or 6 years as part time education. Entry requirements of a minimum are 3 GCSE’s at grade
What type of work experience do you think you would need to help you in your future career?
How might you be able to find work experience placements? If you could pick anywhere to do
work experience, where would it be and why?
The type of work experience I would need to help me pursue into the career I want would be to work at a
car graphics company and learn how to wrap a car using specific tools, learn how to create the design on
software and how to print it out etc. To help me find these types of work experience placements I could ask
someone my dad knows that does car graphics to see if I could do some work experience with them or
search and ring up companies to see if I could possibly do some work experience.
However if I had to pick anywhere to do work experience it would be with the person my dad knows as they
could possible teach me and if I'm lucky enough I could possible work for them. Which would then mean I
would be doing the job I want to do.
What specific skills do you need to develop? There should be a mix of industry specific skills and
also personal development points. When you identify these, come up with suggestions as to how
you might make those improvements.
Skills that I need to develop would be communication, as I am quite a shy person and in order to be able to
do the job I want I would need great communication skills as I would be talking to staff and customers to be
able to create the design the customer wants an to be able o make sure that its at the correct standards.
Another skill i need to improve would be drawing and shading, however this would be a personal skill that i
would like to improve. This is because the job i would like to do requires being able to create templates but
on a software and when creating a design i would like to be able to re-create each vehicle using as much
detail as possible. So to help me improve this skill, i will draw and practice shading more in my free time to
help me improve.
I would also need to improve on my independence as when it comes to car graphics you will need to be
able to work on your own some times on creating the design to help make deadlines. So when doing
projects at college i will try my best to work on my own and then if im really stuck ask for help and see if i
can make any improvements.
In 5 years time I will…
In five years time i will hopefully have the job i want and enjoy it. But also i will make sure to have a nice
car that i have bought on my own and have been ale to modify it and wrap it on my own in the style and
theme i want it to be.
I would also like to have a house of my own that has an art room to do my art and stuff with cars. A garage
to be able to do my own car and i would like to be able to just have the things i want to make my house a
home. I would also like to travel to places and visit lots of car shows around the globe, including a big car
show known as jap fest.
