This document summarizes several local case studies on coastal communities in Rhode Island that are vulnerable to sea level rise. It describes modeling of 1 foot, 3 foot, and 5 foot sea level rise scenarios for the communities of Jamestown, Barrington/Warren, and Charlestown. For each community, the document identifies current land uses and infrastructure that are at risk of flooding and inundation. It also provides potential issues and opportunities to address the impacts of sea level rise through actions such as elevating roads, relocating facilities, protecting undeveloped lands, and coordinating land management between stakeholders.

The Huntington Levee is located at 5755 Mt. Vernon Drive, Alexandria, and provides a 2,800-foot levee along Cameron Run to protect the community from flooding associated with storms of up to at least a 100-year event. The levee is made up of a 10- to 15-foot high earthen embankment with a 4-foot high concrete I-wall which caps the steel sheet piles embedded in the embankment. The project also includes a 5,300 square foot mechanical pump station that houses three 42.5 million gallon per day axial flow pumps for the larger storm events and three 8,000 gallon per minute low flow pumps for base flows and smaller storms. Upgrades to the Farrington Park playground and a network of connecting trails was included in the project. The new levee infrastructure has been operational since spring 2019 and recently provided flood protection for the adjacent homes and community during the major rainfall event of July 8, 2019.
The project achieved the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure Envision Bronze Award and has been recognized with the National Capital Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers Sustainable Project/Program of the Year Award for 2019.
The People’s Water Board is a coalition of labor, social justice, and environmental organizations based in Detroit. They work together to confront: 1) devastating lack of access to water faced by tens of thousands of low-income people who have had their water shut off; 2) water pollution due to aging wastewater infrastructure; and 3) the effort of corporate interests to gain control of Detroit’s water system. Micro RNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs molecules having approximately 18-25 nucleotides, they are present in both plants and animals genomes. MiRNAs have diverse spatial expression patterns and regulate various developmental metabolisms, stress responses and other physiological processes. The dynamic gene expression playing major roles in phenotypic differences in organisms are believed to be controlled by miRNAs. Mutations in regions of regulatory factors, such as miRNA genes or transcription factors (TF) necessitated by dynamic environmental factors or pathogen infections, have tremendous effects on structure and expression of genes. The resultant novel gene products presents potential explanations for constant evolving desirable traits that have long been bred using conventional means, biotechnology or genetic engineering. Rice grain quality, yield, disease tolerance, climate-resilience and palatability properties are not exceptional to miRN Asmutations effects. There are new insights courtesy of high-throughput sequencing and improved proteomic techniques that organisms’ complexity and adaptations are highly contributed by miRNAs containing regulatory networks. This article aims to expound on how rice miRNAs could be driving evolution of traits and highlight the latest miRNA research progress. Moreover, the review accentuates miRNAs grey areas to be addressed and gives recommendations for further studies.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.
