Department of Public Works and Environmental Services/Building Design and Construction Division
Project Description
The Huntington Levee, located at 5755 Mt. Vernon Drive, Alexandria, provides a 2800-
foot long levee along Cameron Run designed to protect the community from flooding
associated with at least the 100-year storm events. The project consists of two main
elements: 1) An earthen embankment and concrete I-wall levee; and 2) A mechanical
pump station. The levee is a 10-15 foot high earthen embankment with a 4 foot high
concrete I-wall which caps the steel sheet piles embedded in the embankment. The
5,300 SF Pump Station houses three 42.5 MGD axial flow pumps for the larger storm
events, and three 8,000 GPM low flow pumps for base flows and smaller storms.
Upgrades to the Farrington Park playground and a network of connecting trails are also
included.
The Huntington Levee project achieved the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure
Envision Bronze award and the National Capital Section of the American Society of Civil
Engineers Sustainable Project/Program of the Year Award for 2019.
Substantial Completion Date: June 28, 2019
Total Project Cost: $ 41,200,000
