Working with
Change, Conflict &
Crisis with Children
& Families
An introduction to the module
With Nathan Loynes
Module Aim
• This module will concentrate on the
personal competences required by
professionals in order for them to facilitate
principled change.
• This will involve the exploration of
communication skills and relationship
building and listening and counselling skills.
On successful completion of
this module, students should
be able to:
1. Demonstrate skills in communication, relationship building,
negotiation, conflict resolution and understanding the
process of change.
2. Describe key aspects of resistance to change and how
conflict and crises might emerge in ineffectively managed
relationships.
3. Apply change, conflict, and crisis theories when problem
solving when working with children and families in
challenging contexts.
4. Demonstrate a developed self-awareness, reflection skills
and resilience and understand the role of these skills in
direct work with children and families.
Module Handbook
Remember, the Module Handbook is the
place to go for key information and
guidance…
...especially about the assignments
The Module Handbook is in the Module
Information tab (the page you land on when
you log on)

A 2000 word
reflective log
Reflections on my
improved responses
to change and

A 3000 word Report
Case Study Report on
affecting positive
change with a
child(ren) or family
experiencing crisis
Submitting the assignments:
• Electronic via Turnitin only!
• Name the assignment by your nine-digit student
number
• 12pt Ariel
• Lines Double-spaced.
1. 3000 word report due: 29 April
2. 2000 word reflective log due: 13 May
Help me to help you?
• Each week there will be approximately 4 PDF
recommended readings that supports that week’s
topic.
• Try to take 1-2 pages of notes per reading.
Highlight key quotes. A free PDF app is helpful: I
use Foxit PDF.
• Create 10 electronic folders and store each
week’s readings and your ongoing notes in there.
It’s a good idea to do this in OneDrive, Google
Drive, DropBox etc.
• I will give you feedback on your reflective log as
we go along
• I will give you feedback on your report plan
Week 1
Week 2
Making a start on the assignments
• I’m aware of the ongoing COVID-19 situation,
really?!? I am!
• We can make a start on the reflective log by
writing 500 words as a ‘bench mark’ of where
you are now.
• The only thing you need to do is identify a
critical incident between now and reading week
(17th February) and write about 500 words on it.
• It can be like a ‘diary’ (*Health warning)
• You can identify a critical incident as having an
impact on you, ‘often’ they will ‘upset’ you.
Make notes soon after it?
The Case Study Report
• You can use a case study of a
family/child you are working with.
Discuss this with me first.
• You can use the case study that I will
provide for you after reading week.
• The Easter Vacation might be a good
time to complete the case study report?
• Remember, this is foremost an academic
exercise to demonstrate what you have
learnt from the module!
Assignment
How does Flipped Learning work?
• Each week, there’ll be a ‘pre-class folder of
materials to engage with.
• When you come to class/seminar you should
have an opinion or questions on the material
that you bring to the live class to discuss. This is
called ‘consolidation of knowledge’.
• Each week, there’ll be two prompts for your
notes:
1. What I got/understood from this week’s
materials
2. A point I need to seek clarification on?
Bring these to class/seminar
Office Hours
Tuesday Afternoons 12-6pm
If you’d like a quick response
to an email or a quick chat or
tutorial?
In preparation for
next week:
See if you can identify a critical
incident make as many notes as
you can?
Engage with the pre class
materials ready for next week.

2285 (2021) week 1 introduction to the module online

  • 1. Working with Change, Conflict & Crisis with Children & Families An introduction to the module With Nathan Loynes
  • 2. Module Aim • This module will concentrate on the personal competences required by professionals in order for them to facilitate principled change. • This will involve the exploration of communication skills and relationship building and listening and counselling skills.
  • 3. On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate skills in communication, relationship building, negotiation, conflict resolution and understanding the process of change. 2. Describe key aspects of resistance to change and how conflict and crises might emerge in ineffectively managed relationships. 3. Apply change, conflict, and crisis theories when problem solving when working with children and families in challenging contexts. 4. Demonstrate a developed self-awareness, reflection skills and resilience and understand the role of these skills in direct work with children and families.
  • 4. Module Handbook Remember, the Module Handbook is the place to go for key information and guidance… ...especially about the assignments The Module Handbook is in the Module Information tab (the page you land on when you log on)
  • 5. The Assignments: A 2000 word reflective log Reflections on my improved responses to change and conflict A 3000 word Report Case Study Report on affecting positive change with a child(ren) or family experiencing crisis
  • 6. Submitting the assignments: • Electronic via Turnitin only! • Name the assignment by your nine-digit student number • 12pt Ariel • Lines Double-spaced. 1. 3000 word report due: 29 April 2. 2000 word reflective log due: 13 May
  • 7. Help me to help you? • Each week there will be approximately 4 PDF recommended readings that supports that week’s topic. • Try to take 1-2 pages of notes per reading. Highlight key quotes. A free PDF app is helpful: I use Foxit PDF. • Create 10 electronic folders and store each week’s readings and your ongoing notes in there. It’s a good idea to do this in OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox etc. • I will give you feedback on your reflective log as we go along • I will give you feedback on your report plan Week 1 Week 2
  • 8. Making a start on the assignments • I’m aware of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, really?!? I am! • We can make a start on the reflective log by writing 500 words as a ‘bench mark’ of where you are now. • The only thing you need to do is identify a critical incident between now and reading week (17th February) and write about 500 words on it. • It can be like a ‘diary’ (*Health warning) • You can identify a critical incident as having an impact on you, ‘often’ they will ‘upset’ you. Make notes soon after it?
  • 9. The Case Study Report • You can use a case study of a family/child you are working with. Discuss this with me first. • You can use the case study that I will provide for you after reading week. • The Easter Vacation might be a good time to complete the case study report? • Remember, this is foremost an academic exercise to demonstrate what you have learnt from the module! Assignment
  • 10. How does Flipped Learning work? • Each week, there’ll be a ‘pre-class folder of materials to engage with. • When you come to class/seminar you should have an opinion or questions on the material that you bring to the live class to discuss. This is called ‘consolidation of knowledge’. • Each week, there’ll be two prompts for your notes: 1. What I got/understood from this week’s materials 2. A point I need to seek clarification on? Bring these to class/seminar
  • 11. Office Hours Tuesday Afternoons 12-6pm If you’d like a quick response to an email or a quick chat or tutorial?
  • 12. In preparation for next week: See if you can identify a critical incident make as many notes as you can? Engage with the pre class materials ready for next week.
