Plants and animals can cause mechanical weathering by enlarging cracks in rocks. As tree roots grow, they widen existing cracks in rocks, eventually breaking them into pieces. Even small plants like mosses can enlarge cracks as they grow. Animals that burrow, such as prairie dogs and moles, also break rocks apart underground. Other aboveground animals contribute by digging and trampling rocks.
