2. Experiment 1
• I am doing this experiment to test
possible effects, transitions and filters
that I could use on my project; to make
these experiments, I have decided not
to use Premiere Pro, and this is
because I want to test the advantages
of doing my editing on another app
and if this will improve my final result
or if it would be better on Premiere
Pro. With this first experiment I
decided to use strong effects and
louder music, with no natural sounds
(e.g. footsteps, breathing, wind etc.). I
wanted to do it this way because I
wanted to test if it would look/feel
more scary if the clip had heavier
effects, instead of a more natural and
raw footage. I did all the editing on my
phone and the app is called Filmr.
4. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your
final product?
– After finishing experiment 1, I came to the conclusion that using
too many effects could damage the quality of my footage and
take away the focus from the important thing, that being the
story.
– However, I really liked the type of effect I used at the beginning,
I think that the fact that it damaged a little bit the vision we
have of the killer is an advantage because it looks more dark and
twisted, almost like it makes him look more evil.
– I also liked the use of a darker filter for horror scenes because it
gives them a creepy look.
5. Experiment 2
• Similarly to experiment 1, with the
second experiment I wanted to try
new filters and effects to use on
my project. However, with
experiment 2, I tried to create a
clip with very simple effects and
sounds, and this is because I
wanted to see the advantage to
the “scary factor” that this more
natural editing would give. Again,
for this experiment I also did not
use Premiere Pro, for the same
reason I didn’t use it on the first
experiment, I wanted to see if my
results would be better using
another app. I wanted to see if by
using lighter filters and transitions
it would still be scary, or if it
wouldn’t look like a horror movie.
6. Process
The process for the second experiment is
very similar to the first one because they
were made on the same app. First, I
edited the raw footage and selected the
clips I wanted to use, to do this I used a
simple Split and delete tool. Second, for
the first part of the clip, I looked for a
darker, yet light, filter; I used a filter that
had a blue/black balance and it matched
the nightmare theme well; for the second
part of clip I used a brown stained filter
that was darker than the original clip,
because I wanted to follow the “dark
nightmare” theme of the first part of the
clip. Lastly I only added music to the very
beginning of the clip because I wanted to
add tension only when she was having the
nightmare, and I used a song called “come
play with me”.
7. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your
final product?
– Having tried the “light” theme for the second experiment, I see
that I did not like it. I came to the conclusion that the first
experiment had too much effect and the second had too little,
so taking that into consideration, on my project I will aim for the
middle level; not too many effects that will disrupt the film, but
not too little as to make it boring.
– What I did like about the second experiment were the filters
used, I liked them better because they’re lighter and therefore
you can see better the characters.
