This document provides research on the target audience for a film project aimed at ages 16-19. It analyzes data showing what teenagers spend money on, mainly food and clothing. It suggests including popular brands like McDonald's and clothing brands like Nike in scenes to appeal to teenagers. Research graphs show Nike is the most popular clothing and footwear brand among teens. The document concludes Nike should be featured to attract the target audience.
4. Audience Research
According to the data presented on the graph, teenagers
mainly spend their money on food and clothing. With that
information, I can use elements in my movie that are
attractive to teenagers. For example, if I wanted to attract
teens to my movie with food, I would use a brand widely
popular among teenagers, which would be McDonald’s.
So that could be, for example, do a
scene where the characters are
eating McDonald’s and briefly talking
about it. I could also include two food
brands at the same time in my movie
if do a scene where the characters
discuss which one of their favourite
brands is better, “McDonald’s or
KFC?”. This would not only appeal to
teenagers as it is something of
interest for them, but it could also
generate money for my film, as the
companies will pay for their brand to
be in my film.
6. Audience Research
As shown on graph 1 on the previous slide, after food, clothing is what teenagers
most spend money on. And as shown on graph 2, the clothing brand teenagers most
spend money on is Nike; then, as seen on graph 3, Nike is shown as the most popular
footwear brand among teenagers. Now, considering the information presented on the
three graphs, my conclusion is that Nike is the most popular clothing brand among
teenagers, and what they buy the most at Nike is footwear. Then, when filming my
film, I can use that data to include Nike footwear and with it make my target audience
appealed by my movie. An example of how I could use it, is I could have a scene
where my main character is walking down the street, alone or with friends, and make
them stop at the window of a Nike shop to admire the new collection of shoes they
have; secondly I could have a scene where two characters are talking and have one of
them be wearing Nike shoes and they engage in a conversation about the shoes. That
would make my audience not only interested, but also consider their own personal
opinions when watching the scene.
8. Existing Product – truth or dare
A group of college students play a game of truth or dare
while on vacation in Mexico, only to realize it has deadly
consequences if they don't follow through on their
obligations. The game makes them do horrible things like
light a woman on fire, break your best friend’s hand, cut
out your own thong, etc. If they do not complete the
dares, the game makes them kill themselves.
This is a scene from when they first
start playing the game; they are in
an abandoned house, the camera is
pointed at them using a long shot.
This scene was shot in a dark place,
and the lighting doesn’t allow a
perfect view of the characters; this
was done intentionally as a tool to
make the scene more creepy and to
hint the dangers that would occur
next.
9. Existing Product – truth or dare
This scene is from when this character,
Olivia, is getting a dare. When the
characters are getting a dare, people
around them get this creepy smile
appearance and give them their dare.
This scene was filmed in an close up
shot, the lighting is good as to show
well the character’s face expressions
and the faces of the demons around.
They use an effect to alter the people’s faces behind the main character; like the rest of movie,
they use modern and young clothes, as the characters are college students. The locations used in
the movie are around the town they study in, it is a big modern normal town so the scenarios are
something we can relate to as an audience, seeing that most people that watch this movie live in
an middle class condition. The characters are often together and the mise en scene is mainly the
characters gathered in a circle or semi circle in a room.
• This movie is appealing to a young audience because their life is something we can relate to;
they are good friends who study together, and the mystery of the movie makes it that we as
an audience engage as to find out the cause of their curse; also the horror and violence
scenes is something that teenagers most like to see.
10. Existing Product – Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day is a movie about a girl that gets murdered
on her birthday and keeps waking up everyday in the
morning of her birthday after getting murdered and she has
to find out who is killing her so that she can stop going back
in time and survive. At the end of the movie it is discovered
that it is her roommate that is killing her because she is
jealous of the main character because she is having an affair
with the man she loves; in order to survive, at the end of the
movie the main character kills her roommate.
In this scene they used a close up
mixed with an over the shoulder
shot, allowing the audience to see
the main character and the killer. The
mise en scene organize the
characters close together and they
are in a poorly illuminated street; as
the story is set in modern times,
both the characters use modern day
clothes, she is wearing a simple long
sleeve t-shirt and the killer wears a
black hoodie and black joggers.
11. Existing Product – Happy Death Day
All the scenes where the character is about
to be killed have a dark filter and it is poorly
illuminated, as opposed to when she is with
someone of trust the scenes are well
illuminated, often with sunshine. This is
done to mislead the audience, as in this
scene, this is the roommate that wants to kill
the main character, and the cupcake she is
giving her, is poisoned.
That strategy is used so as to surprise the audience at the end, when the true killer is revealed,
all the scenes with the roommate uses elements that brings the audience a sense of security, for
example, they wear bright coloured clothing and we can observe that the scenario at the back is
white with a sunshine, giving the false impression of purity and friendship. This particular scene
uses a medium shot so to show the characters together, facing each other in a friendly way, and
this is something the killer takes advantage of, because no one suspects her until she is revealed
at the end of the movie.
• This movie is appealing to the target audience because it is a well written suspense/horror
that keeps the watcher on the edge of their seat each time the unknown killer is shown.
12. Existing Product – Nerve
Nerve is a movie about a high school senior, Vee, and her friends;
the movie revolves around an online truth or dare game, which
allows people to enlist as "players" or "watchers" and as the game
progresses further, the players are contacted and invited to
participate in more dangerous and risky dares than their prior
ones. At the end, however wins, wins a prize in money that is paid
with the “watchers” money. However, as the game is dangerous,
the main characters try and end the game and they succeed at
then end by faking the death of Vee and making the “watchers”
feel guilty and delete the game.
This is a scene from the beginning of the movie,
when the dares of the game still seam innocent
and the players don’t know its dangers. In this
scene they use a medium shot so to show the
friends having fun with the dares and to make
the audience think the game is not something
serious and even want to play it themselves. This
story is also set in modern times and the
characters use normal teenagers clothes, but
again, in light colouring so as to show their
innocence.
13. Existing Product – Nerve
This scene is from the end of the movie, this
scene is also filmed using a medium shot and
we can notice the drastic change in lighting and
costumes. In this scene, the characters already
know the true dangers of the game, and we can
see that the main character is wearing red,
foreshadowing the blood that would come
next. We can also notice that the “watchers”
are now mainly wearing dark colours, like black,
and masks so as to protect their identity.
The drastic change in costumes and lighting is important to the story because it indicates that the
“watchers”, being the ones that gives the “players” the dares, are just as much guilty of what happens as
the players, even if they are not doing it themselves. The “watchers” remain anonymous so as to protect
their identity and they cannot be traced or found guilty by law of the things that happened. At the end
of the movie, all of the “watchers” identities are revealed and they are forced by guilt to stop playing
the game; the movie also shows that the “watchers” are normal people like any one of us, living their
lives and allowing horrible things to happen because they’re not doing it directly.
• This movie is appealing to the audience, not only because of the main characters romance, which is
something that was well written and enjoyable, but also because the movie teaches us a lesson
about empathy and responsibility, just because we only are online viewers, it doesn’t mean we are
not also guilty if we allow horrible things to happen to our own entertainment.
14. Existing Product – The Babysitter
The movie tells the story of Cole, who loves his babysitter Bee;
she's hot, funny, and popular. One night, in a moment of
defiance, Cole secretly stays up past his bedtime because he
wants to find out what does his babysitter do at night when he's
asleep. He discovers she's actually a cold-blooded killer who's in
league with the Devil; they have a book and they must complete
a ritual to get their wish. He then spends the night fighting Bee
and her friends who are trying to kill him so he doesn't tell
everyone their secret.
This scene is from the beginning of the
movie, when Cole still trusts his babysitter
and no one knows, that she is a killer.
However, in this scene we can notice some
foreshadowing in the red lights, that indicate
blood. This scene uses a medium-long shot,
where we can see Bee’s hand which also
foreshadows something that happens later;
if we look at her left hand it is possible to
see her doing a hand gesture with her index
and ring fingers up, indicating horns, or, the
devil.
15. Existing Product – The Babysitter
This scene in the movie is when Cole finds
out their secret, and they tie him up so he
doesn’t run away and tells everyone what
he saw. This scene uses a long shot and we
can notice the way the characters are
standing relating to Cole tells us that they
want to look intimidating and dangerous,
and with him being a child, they do not
think it’ll take a lot.
Two other things used to intimidate Cole are the guy in the background without a shirt and
the guy on the right corner with blood on his shirt. The shirtless character does this
intentionally to show off his abs and send a message that he is strong and will stop Cole
easily if he needs to; the character will blood on his shirt gives an image of death/danger,
telling Cole that they already killed someone and will kill him if necessary. The lighting is also
very important in this scene, notice how in comes from behind them, making them appear
bigger and intimidating and their shadow reflecting on Cole is used to make him feel small.
• This movie is appealing to the audience because it has interesting/cool/attractive
characters which makes the audience interested in them, and the plot keeps the
audience invested and worried to see if they manage to kill Cole or not.
16. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– Dark lighting to indicate danger, characters that seem friendly and
good but end up being the villain, modern clothes and scenarios,
change in clothing (lighter tones at the beginning when the danger is
still unknown and darker at the end when the danger is revealed),
unexpected villains.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on
work?
– I want to use the change in clothing tones, the friendly character that
turns out to be the villain, dark lighting and my story will also be set in
modern times.
18. Audience
research
• Observation:
Most of my audience is mainly
females (50%), followed by males
(40%) and lastly non-binary (10%).
• What this says about my
audience:
This tells me that while my
audience is mainly females, the
ratio is very close and so I should
create something that is equally
appealing to all genders.
• How will your product appeal
to this audience:
I’m going to make a piece that
doesn’t cover female interests
only, but rather, something that
people universally will enjoy, and
to do this, even though the main
character is a female, I won’t
make the film about gender
struggles.
19. • Observation:
My results tell me that my
audience mainly likes red
herrings, which are clues in the
movie used to mislead the
audience.
• What this says about my
audience:
This tells me that my audience
likes to be surprised at the end
of a film, and not know what is
going to happen next.
• How will your product
appeal to this audience:
I will avoid cliches and where
possible, mislead my audience in
my film so they can stay
interested and be shocked at the
end of my film.
Audience
research
20. • Observation:
This question had mixed answers, I
tried to put the most obvious cliches
so to know what my audience
watches. But the one with the most
votes was jump scares.
• What this says about my
audience:
This tells me that my audience
watches a lot of movies with obvious
cliches, and that they are used to
them, so movies that have it, wont
interest them as much as a movie
with an unexpected plot twist.
• How will your product appeal to
this audience:
I will make sure to steer clear of
those cliches so that my audience
can be engaged with my movie
and not already know from the
beginning what is going to happen.
Audience
research
21. • Observation: The graph tells me
that while half of my audience isn’t
bothered by cliches, the other half
does mind if the movie is too
obvious.
• What this says about my audience:
These results really surprised me
because I really thought that my
audience would say that they would say
that cliches really bother them, but it
seems that for half the cases is
something that doesn’t affect them.
This tells me that my audience may
prefer quality of the story and the end,
and not really worry about the cliches.
• How will your product appeal to
this audience:
Now that I know my audience has a
mixed opinion about it, I may use a
cliché or two, but nothing that will
affect the quality of my story. But I want
to give my audience the false
impression that they know what is
going to happen
Audience
research
22. • Observation:
The majority of my audience
says that they would prefer
diverse characters/outside of the
common box.
• What this says about my
audience:
This tells me that my audience is
tired of movie where the
characters are repetitive and
obvious, and they would like to
see characters that are not plain
and dull, and that they relate to.
• How will your product
appeal to this audience:
I will try to diversify my cast and
make their personalities
interesting, so that the audience
can identify with and engage
with them
