Monica ` S Presence In Augustine s Life
Monica s presence in the spiritual life of Augustine poignantly reveals the profundity of love
shared between a mother and her son. In the nine books in which she is mentioned, Monica makes
significant decisions that have a substantive impact on Augustine s early life. Despite being a
devout Catholic, Monica chooses to delay the baptism of her son until later in life. While this
would be unusual for a contemporary member of the Catholic church, Monica believed it was in the
best interest of Augustine to defer his baptism, allowing him to purge himself of his sinful and
ungodly desires present during his youth with baptism received at an older age. As such, Monica
minimizes the accumulation of sin that Augustine may commit after his baptism, thus allowing him
to be to be judged more warmly by Godafter his death.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
13). Early on, Augustine is unsure of the validity of his mother s decision, considering her to
have failed in her role, as he believed he would be less sinful if baptized at a younger age,
eliminating the ritual s absence as an excuse for him to continue committing sin. Augustine s
blaming Monica for not leading him on the correct spiritual path, proliferates as he grows older as
he deplores her apparent lack of effort in restraining his sexual desires. He laments, ...although she
had warned me to guard my virginity...she did not seek to restrain my sexual drive within the limit
of the marriage bond (pg. 28). However, Augustine s sentiment that his mother did not put forth
great enough effort to restrict his desire slowly dissipates, as he struggles on the path to salvation.
Augustine begins to recognize the significant role Monica played in his conversion, emphasizing
the role she played as both a physical mother and spiritual

Essay On Eyewitness Testimony
Eye witness testimony is an unreliable way of testifying because age differences can be easily
influenced and gender roles has an impact in the accuracy for memory recalling.
A study conducted of one hundred and ninety six individuals living in Madrid at the time of the
terrorist attack demonstrated that age differences affects the accuracy of eye witness testimonies
(Vallet, Manzanero, ArГіtegui, Garcia, 2017). Adolescents and children are both influenced
differently by emotions and the quality of their memory. With that being said, adults performed
better on recalling much accurate details such as sound, odor, central information, visuals, and
feelings (Vallet, et al., 2017). The younger group of individuals, children, had doubts on recalling
their memories of the event. This is due to the fact that depending on the age and level of
development that an individual is in, the strength in their memory can be easily influenced (Vallet,
et al., 2017).
Another study reveal that females performed better than males for the accuracy of memory

Adults can recall memory better than a child would because of the level of development they are
in (Vallet, et al., 2017). A child can also be easily manipulated by leading questions that they were
subjected to and say what they think the individuals want them to say. In addition, children also
create false memories at times (ABC News, 2005). Men have greater confidence recalling their
memory which makes them seem reliable, but it is not a reason why eye witness testimony is
reliable. There is an exception where an eye witness testimony done by a female can be reliable,
it is for description of the place and appearance of a person. However, with all things, eye witness
testimony done by a female should still be taken with a bit of

Beloved by Toni Morrison
In the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, Morrison has created two very powerful characters:
Denver and Beloved. Denver and Beloved are sisters, but in a sense, they weren t always. It used
to just be Denver and her mother, Sethe, that lived together in a house. That house was passed
down to them by Denver s grandmother, Baby Suggs, which was given to her by a white couple
who were out to help the blacks. Sethe and Denver were very content with the way things were.
Sethe had a paying job as a cook and Denver never left the house since she was terrified of the
horrible monsters that could be lurking in the outside world. They also had a spirit that was
haunting their house, which was believed to be Denver s sister that was killed as a baby. Until one
day, Paul D came to the house and banished the ghost. But the ghost ended up taking human form
and stayed with the familyfrom then on. They called her Beloved. Denver had always taken a liking
to the ghost, and now that she was human form she was as happy as can be. Beloved was the
only friend or even company that Denver ever had growing up. Denver wanted all of Beloved s
attention, but Beloved only wanted Sethe. Now that Beloved was back, they could all be a family.
But Beloved becomes a threat towards the end and is becoming dangerous. Beloved was the only
friend that Denver had. Denver was always too scared to leave the property because of the
traumatizing experience she had the one time she went out into the world. Yes,

The Importance of the Economic Factors in the Rise to Power of the Fascist Party in Italy
Fascism came on the heels of a war that economically and physically crippled Italy. In an attempt to
regain control, Italian general and dictator, Benito Mussolini created a political party that rivalled
the Socialist party. Fascism was an extremely harsh dictatorship type of power that left many
people a victim of its cruelty. This essay will explore whether the rise of fascism was due to the
economic breakdown in the country at that time, or was that fascism was simply so popular at that
time that nothing would have stopped it? Was it the threat of bolshevism driving people towards
fascism in an attempt to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem of unemployment was aggravated by the return of millions of ex soldiers to Italy and
a new immigration law of the U.S. government, which restricted entry of immigrants. Moreover,
runaway inflation added to the sufferings of the Italians. The lira had only one fifth of its pre war
value. Encouraged by the success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, the unemployed workers
and peasants stirred up riots and strikes throughout the country. At that time the government was
incompetent. It failed to take control of the conditions in the country. Gradually the nationalists
grouped together to emerge as the fascist party. According to Ketelby, author of the book History of
modern time Europe,
It was the urgent need of a strong unifying force that formed the background for the rise of fascism
in Italy.
These political crises may have pushed the leaders of Italy into supporting fascism. The people
were restless they wished for an effective government. Many were turning to socialism, others to
fascism. The King and aristocracy may not have supported fascism but seen it as the lesser evil
compared to the red menace. Economic factors such as the high unemployment figures and the
inflation pushed the people away from the weak government and

Control Room Essay
Control Room is a documentary directed by Jehane Noujaim that shows the coverage and
interactions between the Arabic news station Al Jazeera and the United States military during
the invasion of Iraq in 2003. This documentary shows interviews and news clips from the
invasion of Iraq. Control Room is mainly told through the point of view of Al Jazeera. Control
Room was an excellent documentary that has impacted me and has given me a new
understanding on the influence of media as well as media freedom. What really impacted me
from this documentary is the interviews and clips about the invasion of Iraq that were used. A lot
of the footage that was shown was propaganda. What I like the most was how it would go back

Media bias is something that I understand really well, however, this documentary made me
realize how much of an impact it has on other countries around the world. I have seen the impact
media bias has had on the United States, but I never realized how much it effects other countries
as well. In the documentary for example, it shows a little kid expressing his feeling towards the
American troops. Our media would have used that clip of that young child as propaganda so
that the general public will support the invasion, but in reality, it was just a child expressing his
feelings. It really shows just how much media bias plays in our society. Another thing that I can
say I took away from this documentary is a new understanding on how much of a significant role
the media played during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Most documentaries about the 2003
invasion of Iraq usually show American news footage of the invasion, but not Al Jazeera s footage
or coverage. Personally, I really appreciate that this documentary mainly showed and focused on Al
Jazeera s footage so that viewers could see things through different and new perspective. For
instance, I remember watching a documentary on the invasion of Iraq and feeling patriotic when I
first saw the footage of the United States military raising the American flag were the statue of

Why Franklin Was A Thoroughbred Renaissance Man
During Benjamin Franklin s illustrious 84 years of life he achieved success that seems practically
unachievable today. Franklin found success in business, going from a teenager traveling colonial
America looking for work as a printer, to building his own printing empire. Aside from business,
Franklin also had a knack for inventing. He developed products such as the Franklin stove,
bifocals, lightning rod, and the glass harmonica. Include the fact that he was also heavily involved
in politics, is one of the founding fathers of our nation, and also one of the most intelligent men of
all time, and it is easy to see that Benjamin Franklinwas a thoroughbred renaissance man. It is one
thing to know about the story of Benjamin Franklin, but it is completely different to understand
the potential benefits of following his way of life. This essay will focus on the benefits that
Franklin s story could have on the typical college student. College is a time of immense personal
growth, and what better way to grow than with the guidance from the author of the American
dream Benjamin Franklin. After four short years, students are let out into the real world so it is
important to be prepared. That is why it would be wise for college students to follow the life of
Benjamin Franklin as presented in his autobiography. Franklin s work ethic, emphasis on personal
growth, and frugality are relevant to college students today, and provide an outline for helping
students find success.

Violent Sports Research Paper
Why have sports become a source of anger, divisiveness, and violence? Although sports fans
wield the power to grow and popularize a sport, they can also prove to be severely detrimental
towards a sport. Whether it s deterring a potential fan from following a particular team or inciting
violence among fans, the deplorable behavior of various groups of sports fans has caused sports
leagues to take preventative measures to ensure the safety and well being of both fans and athletes.
Sporting arenas, establishments that televise sporting events, and the internet have all succumbed
to the horrendous actions perpetrated by these fans. Furthermore, the hostile behavior of the worst
sports fan hijack the rich cultural exchange and camaraderie that comes from sports.
Understanding the behaviors of the worst sports fans, will assist people in recognizing which
fans they should avoid. Hipster sports fans are one of the most unsociable sports fans on account
of their resentment towards new fans who decide to follow their sports team. Hipster fans feel
entitled to their team because they have been following the team for a longer period of time. For
instance, when a sports team has a breakout season, Hipster fans alienate any new fans who decide

Hydrochloric Acid Test Lab Report
The effectiveness of commercial antacids to neutralize acid
Introduction The human stomach contains gastric juices with a pH between 1.5 and 3.5 when
these highly acidic juices rise into the less acidic lower esophagus pain and discomfort can occur
(Exploring Biology in the Laboratory). There are many commercial antacids on the market that
claim to relieve the pain more effectively than their competitors. All these antacids, however, should
work in a similar manner to neutralize the excess hydrogen ions from the stomach that are causing
the discomfort (Exploring Biology in the Laboratory). Tums and Alka Seltzer are two popular
antacids on the market, each containing different active ingredients. Tums contains 500 mg of
Calcium Carbonate while Alka Seltzer lists three active ingredients on their bottle, 325 mg of
Aspirin, 100 mg Citric acid, and 1916 mg of Sodium Bicarbonate. It could be hypothesized that
Alka Seltzer will neutralize the most acid because it contains three active ingredients instead of just

Essay about Land Without Bread
Land Without Bread by Luis Bunuel There are numerous ethnographic surrealist films that have an
intriguing relationship to aesthetics and politics. A film that exemplifies this relationship is Las
Hurdes: Tierra Sin Pan (Land Without Bread). This film is only 27 minutes and is directed by the
infamous Luis Bunuel in 1933. Bunuel was a Spanish filmmaker of the 1920 s to the 1970 s. He is
often attributed to being one of the major contributors to the surrealist movement of the 1920 s.
Ethnographic surrealism is a utopian construct, a statement at once about past and future
possibilities for cultural analysis. (Clifford, 119) Land Without Bread has a clear connection

The opening sequence of the film introduces and defines the genre ( a filmed essay in human
geography ) and the setting ( a sterile and inhospitable area in Spain). The expedition begins in
Alberca with the watching of a strange and barbaric ceremony. Once the people of the town are
drunk with wine, the expedition continues to an uninhibited monastery. Afterwards, we move on
to the first village of Las Hurdes, where numerous young girls eat bread dipped in the water of a
small stream. At the local school, starving children study geometry and educational moral
lessons. Arriving in another village, the expedition meets a choir of idiots and then finds a
young girl ill in the street. Land Without Bread then surveys the Hurdanos diet of potatoes,
beans, pork, and honey. The scene where a goat falls off a mountain and a donkey is covered
and killed by bees is staged unbeknownst to the viewer. A short lived essay on mosquitoes and
malaria leads into a portion on illness and dwarfism, caused by hunger, by lack of hygiene, and
by incest. . As the camera pans across some graves marked with crosses, we hear that, despite the
great misery of the Hurdanos, their moral and religious ideas are the same as in other parts of the
world. We tour a luxurious church before visiting the inside of a Hurdano home. As the family
prepares for bed, an elderly woman walks the darkened streets, chanting of death. The expedition

Summary Of The Blue Bouquet
One might think it a good quality to be a trusting person; someone who takes whatever is given to
them as sincere and never looks beyond what they are told. Upon reading The Blue Bouquet this
thought is diminished as the protagonist finds himself in a dangerous situation due to his lack of
awareness and disregard to warnings. In his state of ignorance, symbols are utilized to demonstrate
his lack of knowledge; however, as the story progresses, the change within the protagonist towards
wisdom becomes apparent. This newly gained realization and loss of the initial feeling of security
he possessed, is shown in his actions following an encounter with a criminal. In Paz s short story,
the reader learns the humbling effect of becoming selfaware and how it gears an individual s
transition from innocence to experience.
As the protagonist aimlessly wanders at night through the town streets, the reader is able to pick
up on symbols, as well as foreshadowing that show that the protagonist is not only inexperienced
but on the road to misfortune. When the protagonist decides to go on his walk he is warned that
it is unsafe to do so by the one eyed owner of the boardinghouse; however, he shrugs it off and
decides to go anyway. The unexplained mentioning of the owners missing eye suggests that there
is reasoning for his words and hints towards what is to come if the protagonist disregards his
cautions. His reckless behaviour also indicates that while innocently trusting his surroundings he
feels as if he knows everything. The protagonist then steps outside and is engulfed by the darkness
of night; he is blindly stumbling along the cobblestone street. The author pairs the symbols of
night and darkness to suggest the unknown chaos and danger that the protagonist is on route for.
In addition, blindness is used to suggest his ignorance and limited senses. Lastly, the narrator
describes a white wall that was crumbled in places (p.163) and how he was blinded by such
whiteness. (p.163) The colour white is a sign for innocence hence making the crumbling of the wall
reveal the upcoming loss of the protagonist s innocence through the means of trauma. These
portrayals of ignorance and innocence are not only recognisable by the

All that Heaven Allows by Douglas Sirk
In the 1950 s the melodrama genre came to age and there is no better example than Douglas Sirk
s All that Heaven Allows. The melodrama followed some basic characteristics which can be
identified in the film. First and foremost the narrative of the melodrama focused on the family.
All that Heaven Allows follows the narrative of the typical melodrama but at the same time also
challenges the social conventions. While Sirk follows many of the key themes he does so in a
more detached fashion. The protagonist Cary is bound to her community by her social class.
Change was occurring in society and the melodrama displayed people s restraint to this. In All that
Heaven Allows Sirk began his focus on the female and her desires in contrast to the more
conservative male focused melodrama. As with the melodrama the legibility of the story, displayed
through the plot, is simple and easy to follow. Our engagement with the story depends on our
understanding of the pattern of change and stability, cause and effect, time and space (Bordwell and
Thompson, 2008). The linear time flow of the filmallows for it s simple understanding. This is
added to by the expressiveness of the melodrama, where everything is brought into the open and
nothing is left unsaid. The expressiveness of the melodrama is also represented in the highly
expressive mise en scene. Sirks use of colour, the human figure, camera work, lighting and music
allow him to portray suppressed meaning and significance.

Mountain Climbers Research Paper
Should climbers be entitled to rescue services on a mountain? When people are climbing
mountains such as Mount Everest or Mount Rainier they know what kind of danger they are
placing themselves in. Many people think that because the services exist they can abuse it and call
for help at any time. Even though these services exist they should only be used in a crisis, because
more people than one climber are being put at risk. As the mountainsgrow in popularity more
people want to travel to them. Many companies are going in debt because of climbers who think
they know what they are doing when they do not. Furthermore, the reason some people have for
needing rescued are ridiculous. These are three main topics as to why climbers should not be
entitled to a rescue. To start off, people who climb places such as Mount Everestand Mount Rainier
put more than themselves at risk. Many will argue that this is the reason rescue services exist.

services are called for a climber and a helicopter has to be used they are putting two million

The Marketing Of The Beer Industry
The U.S. beer industry is a highly concentrated industry since two large firms (Anheuser Busch
InBev and MillerCoors) occupy a significant market share. As the craft beer industry experiences an
explosive growth, the competition becomes fierce. As the largest craft brewery and the seventh
largest brewery in the United States, the Boston BeerCompany is facing growing competitive threats
from larger breweries and premium imported beer companies, including Anheuser Busch InBev,
MillerCoors, Heineken, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium Brewing, and Crown Imports. More than
that, it has to face the competitive challenges from the small breweries, which are growing rapidly
and want to surpass the Boston Beer Company. Samuel Adams produced by the Boston Beer
Company is one of the most popular craft beer because it has won more awards in the beer tasting
competitions than any other breweryin the world since 2000 (Dess et al. C129). As the competition
within the craft beer industry, the Boston Beer Company has to figure out a way to maintain
growth, increase customer awareness, and continue to brew flavorful beers that customers enjoy.
Porter s Five Forces on the general Beer Industry
Industry rivalry is considered high because of the acquisition, the decline of the beer consumption,
and the rise of the craft brewing sector. Competition among the beer companies in the industry is
based on brand and quality. In recent years, the industry has also consolidated quite notably with the

Cal-Work Case Study
The Cal works program promotes work and employment preparation for parents in penurious
families with children. In fact, through employment and community resources the program aims to
reduce the number of families living in poverty. However, there are several conditions affecting the
Cal works population in the Imperial ValleyCounty, such as the high unemployment rates, the
participants socioeconomic disadvantages and the absence of vocational/educational programs

A Brief Note On Animal Endangerment And Vulnerability
In this essay I shall be looking at a few practitioners consisting of Illustrators, painters and film
makers; each create awareness in their own unique and distinguishable form for the subject of
animal endangerment and vulnerability. I shall also be studying which socially engaging visual
practice is most effective and why.
It is thought that scientists have discovered only 17.5 million species on this world; which seems
quite a significant amount but when also considering that it s only thought that 20% of them are
estimated to live, it seems like nothing. Unfortunately, not every single animal and organism can
be protected from such problems as deforestation, climate change, illegal wildlife trading,
pollution, oil and gas development. One example would be forests cover 31% of the land area
on our planet; they produce vital oxygen and provide homes for people and wildlife. Many of
the worlds most threatened and endangered animals live in the forests, and 1.6 million people
rely on the benefits the forests offer (World Wildlife, 2015). Animal endangerment is a subject
we are all very aware of but the majority of us fall into the sad category of not actually doing
anything about it. Many groups and organisations and committed to helping keep these animals
protected; although this alone has a massive impact on wildlife as donations not only keep
animals safe but you can actually adopt and take care of one. To protect and conserve nature
sounds like it should be one of

H.H.Holmes Murder Castle
Would you stay at a hotel you didn t know that much about? Many people did in 1893 during the

thinking it was a regular hotel until they stayed over for one night. Barely anyone made it out
because of Henry Howard Holmes the sick and notorious murder. Holmes did not have a pleasant
childhood, which led him into the huge crimes he committed and how he died at a young age.
Holmes was born on May 16, 1861 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire (Biography 1). He did not have

Holmes was put through several trials until he finally admitted to the crimes he committed. On
March 9,1896 Holmes was convicted to be killed after confessing his crimes at the trial

Alcoholics Anonymous And The Philosophies Essay
Alcoholics Anonymous and The Philosophies in Between:
Conflicting Philosophies Between the Original Twelve Step Alcohol s Anonymous Program and
The New Counseling Profession
Brandon R. McIver
University of Oregon
Abstract
This paper concerns the notoriously well known successful treatment program, Alcoholics
Anonymous twelve step program, and contrasts it to what would be referred to as a revised
version of the original program. Alcoholics Anonymous has been one of the primary sources of
addiction recovery in individuals for numerous years. It allows its participants, who are deemed to
be part of an international fellowship of both men and women alike, an opportunity to join in a
camaraderie that is self supporting, multiracial, nonprofessional, and conveniently available in a
variety of locations. It aims to let its participants share personal experiences and partake in a group
atmosphere where the lead counselor bans judgment. The fundamental values of Alcoholics
Anonymous exist in the twelve core steps that attendees are encouraged to follow in an effort to
redeem control of their alcohol addiction problem. Alcoholics Anonymous has been proven to
change participants principal values and assist them in changing their perceived outlook on life for
an increased potential at living a healthier and addiction free lifestyle. However, the twelve core
values of Alcoholics Anonymous have been challenged and questioned in an effort to

What do visual hallucinations tell us about the nature of consciousness?
The term hallucination is difficult to define. There is a fine line between a hallucination and an
illusion . A hallucination differs from an illusion in that illusions are a product of misinterpretations
of external stimuli whereas hallucinations need no such requirement making them an entirely
internal process. A true hallucinationcan also be distinguished from a pseudo hallucination in which
the individual can recognise that what they re seeing or hearing is not real. Hallucinations are also
different from voluntary mental imagery, in that the thought has not uncontrollably forced itself
onto our minds. Slade and Bentall (1988, cited in Blackmore, 2010) ... Show more content on

The best way to induce hallucinations, or where they occur the most, is through sensory
deprivation. Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is a common condition among people who have lost
their sight in which they suffer visual hallucinations. Many studies have looked at the syndrome in
order to provide a better understanding of visual hallucinations. One study exhibited a 64 year old
blind woman suffering from complex visual hallucinations (McNamara, Heros, Boller, 1982). It was
found that neurosurgical removal of a large suprasellar meningioma helped remove her
hallucinatory experiences. Such a case study provides evidence that hallucinations are related to
both a sensory deprivation and an impairment in CNS functioning. Another study claimed that,
through looking at patients suffering from CBS, the hallucinations were due to an interruption in
the visual association areas of the cerebral cortex. The researchers suggested that hallucinatory
experiences could terminate on improving visual function or addressing social isolation (Menon,
Rahman, Menon, Dutton, 2003).
Deprivation of hearing can also induce hallucinations. Sometimes the deaf hear hallucinated sounds
they may even hear whole orchestras playing. Various case studies have demonstrated such a claim.
Miller and Crosby (1979) found an 89 year old woman experiencing the onset of musical
hallucinations with longstanding progressive hearing loss. These hallucinations were well formed

Mulan, not knowing how to act as a man, is dumbfounded by the actions that these men take.
Compared to Mulan, the men are much larger in size, more buff and fat. Men are shown clipping
their toenails with chopsticks, picking their own boogers, and also fighting amongst each other.
This portrays how men were depicted at this time, very unrefined compared to the women.
Mushu, being a male dragon, explains to Mulan about what it takes to be man, how hitting each
other is another form of greeting to men. Mushu defines men as rowdy, disgusting, and
uncivilized and Mulan very much agrees due to the disgusting aspect she sees of men. Here, she

North America was shaped through a multitude of natural occurrences.

Although it is uncertain, many believe that the glaciers of the Ice Age melted and gave way to the

to tell the men that their behaviour is unacceptable. Women who were treated by men were just

Towards the end of the story, as Gertrude seeks a cure for her withered arm, her husband ends up
cursing her, Damn you! What are you doing here? . This shows how the relationship turned quite
quickly from happiness and affection to resenting and unhappiness. It also shows an example of
lovers ending up in a sorry state as their relationship goes badly, as Gertrude dies after receiving
the cure for her spookily withered arm.
Hardy was also very interested in writing about fate and coincidence in his work for his readers.
As this shows in the The Withered Arm . Rhoda feels such a strong dislike for Gertrude, her ex
husbands new wife, that she subconsciously grasps her by the arm in a dream. Also, another
strong coincidence is that Gertrude is told to receive her cure for the arm by pressing it against
the neck of a hanged person. The coincidence is that the hanged person turns out to be Rhoda s
own son, who had be hanged for stealing. The son of the woman who seems to have caused the
illness, was the same person that offered her the cure, although Gertrude dies very soon after.
The Son s Veto presents another moral issue. A lower class woman marries an upper classman. To
avoid judgement they move away. When this man dies, she meets a past love, but because he is
now of a lower class, her son forbids her to marry him and she dies an unhappy lady. The

News broadcasts and reports are equally culpable in their portrayal of mentally challenged
individuals. In the fight to gain an interested audience, reporters sell stories instead of simply telling

A good story catches public attention either by focusing on conflict and controversy or by raising

They also tend to watch TV shows like One Tree Hill, Laguna Beach, and Gilmore Girls. Why
do our young females look to these fictional characters for real life answers? Do they see these
characters as role models? One has to wonder if they believe that if they mimic how these

Literary Analysis Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Dan Paulos Mr. Kaplan English IV 10 November 2014 Literary Analysis of Samuel Taylor
Coleridge Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an influential British philosopher, critic, and writer of
the early eighteenth century. He was a prominent member of a literary group known as the Lake
Poets, which included renowned writers like William Wordsworth and Robert Southey. His
writings and philosophy greatly contributed to the formation and construction of modern
thought. He possessed an extensive, creative imagination, and developed his own imagination
theories in his writings. However, his personal life was absorbed with various family problems,
and he experienced much solitary anguish. This resulted in depression for Coleridge, and he
often based his stories and poems on themes of dejection, sadness, and melancholy. But he was
neither a nihilist nor a pessimist by any stretch. He believed in the healing powers of love, and
had hope for recovery. His writings were described as being versatile, and scholars have found a
great variety of themes, styles, and techniques in his literature (McKusick par. 1 3). Coleridge was
a firm believer that there is a connection between madness and moral evil. He felt that in the midst
of some horror, people may tend to think that God has left them, and then they would blame their
mental disease on demons. He expressed this message through the protagonist he created in his
longest poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The Mariner experiences this exact

Green River Killer By Gary Leon Ridgway
Green River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway Elizabeth Sabie Florida International University Green
River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway In the summer of 1982, while playing in the woods, children
found the body of a young teen was floating in the Green River in King County, Washington.
Sixteen year old Wendy Lee Coffield was found strangled with her own panties and tossed into
the river like a piece of refuse. Her murder sparked an investigation that spanned three decades.
Coffield s body was the first of many found in or near the Green River in a murder spree that
remained unsolved for twenty years. The victims were young women, often prostitutes or
runaways, who hitchhiked along Highway 99, a dilapidated stretch of the Sea Tac Highway
known for its strip clubs, drugs, and seedy motels (Montaldo). While the majority of the murders
occurred between 1982 1984, police had little success in tracking what they soon realized was a
serial killer. Within a year the police had found four more bodies of young women, and they
formed a task force to apprehend the Green River Killer. It became apparent that the killer had
chosen this stretch of highway to hunt for his victims. The women found here lived in such ways
that no one really noticed if they went missing. This proved even more problematic for the task
force, because they were searching for a killer who had committed the murders months prior. The
bodies had decomposed and it was extremely difficult

Child Rearing Controversy
There are numerous philosophies on how to raise children. Several parents adopt the concepts their
own parents used, others seek advice from friends and there are those that read books about
parenting. Parents come in various and diverse forms, each approaching parenting in ways as
distinct as their personalities. Philosophies on child rearing can be grouped into two styles;
authoritarian, authoritative parenting. These two styles are similar sounding, but have nuanced
differences. Authoritarian parents hold their children to an exceedingly high level of status and
success. In this style of parenting, children are expected to follow the strict rules established by the
parents. Failure in following rules typically results in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using authoritative parenting style requires setting boundaries while still being able to listen and
be patient with the child. Here is an example of the authoritarian parenting style: A child is caught
hitting their playmate. The parent responds by grabbing the child and spanking them without any
explanation of why hitting is immoral. Thus punishing the child with the same misconduct the child
has committed results in mocking of the punishment behavior. Using authoritarian style requires
the ability to be dominantly harsh while giving punishment without an explanation. There are
abundant differences in these two styles, but the most significant discrepancy is in the end
product: the children. An authoritative parent will preserve the love and respect of his children
and, when they reach adulthood, they will continue this custom with their own children. An
authoritative parent will know he has done his job well in the raising of those children, because
the relationships that were built will incessantly last. The parents who choose a benign approach
will obtain the rewards of having children that will be the ones who have a good work ethic and
who succeed in school because they wish to please their parents. The parents who choose to rule
by fear will see quite dissimilar results: their children are probable to react out of that terror, which
will only last as long as they are young;

Correlation Between Hiv And The Prevalence Of Hiv
verify exchangeability.
In the fourth study, based in Andhra Pradesh, India, Schneider et al. (2011) examined the
association of circumcision with the prevalence of HIV in men who have sex with men (MSM).
The cross sectional study sampled 387 Indian men from six drop in health centers, who were
between the ages of 18 49. Men were selected from the drop in centers, interviewed, given written
informed consent and were then tested for HIV. Of the men tested for HIV, 18.6% were positive.
Interviews were completed in order to get information about risk factors that could be associated
with the prevalence of HIV in this population, which was quite high. Of men selected for the study
63.1% were circumcised and 36.9% were uncircumcised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the final study, Kibira, Nansubuga, Tumwesigye, Atuyambe, Makumbi (2014) explored the
relation of HIV prevalence and risky sexual behaviors among circumcised and uncircumcised men
in Uganda. In the study design, 9,524 male participants aged 15 59 years old were studied from
data from the Uganda AIDS Indicator Survey. This national survey was divided into a two stage
stratum cluster sampling that involved selecting households for interview (Kibira et al., 2014).
During the interview of each household, blood samples were collected for HIV status, circumcision
status, and interview questions that addressed risky sexual behaviors including: unprotected sex,
numbers of partners, and transactional sex (Kibira et al., 2014).
Based on the result, there s a direct correlation of circumcised males with lower HIV prevalence
among all age groups. HIV prevalence was 35 37% lower in the circumcised men, after
controlling for several variables (Kibira et al., 2014). The study showed risky sexual behaviors are
also important factors affecting the HIV prevalence on both circumcised and uncircumcised men.
The riskiest behavior practice in all men was unprotected sex, followed by multiple sexual partners,
and transactional sex. The practice of risky sexual behavior was found to be significantly higher in
circumcised men than in uncircumcised men. The research showed that although HIV prevalence
has shown to be significantly lower in circumcised

Black Elk Speaks By John G. Neihardt And Bury My Heart At...
How Connection is Essential to Resonance: A Comparison of Black Elk Speaks and Bury My
Heart at Wounded Knee
Beginning hundreds of years ago, Native Americans experienced an invasion. Perpetrated first by
European explorers, then conquerors, and, finally, colonists, the first people to inhabit the Americas
experienced a devastation of their land, culture, and dignity from people who hungered for their
land and resources. Despite these tribulations, the Native American identity could never truly be
destroyed. The novels Black Elk Speaks by John G. Neihardt and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
by Dee Brown explore this truth by recounting the oppression of Native Americans and illustrating
the incoming of the white man through the indigenous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of Black Elk Speaks, the content focuses on the life story of Black Elk, a figurehead of
the Oglala Sioux tribe of what is now primarily South Dakota. Neihardt s approach of simply
listening to Black Elk as he told his story in his native tongue and then seeking translation granted
Black Elk the autonomy of his expression and brought to the table realism tinged with mysticism, a
representation of the Native American experience in a manner not intruded by commentary or
analysis. Speaking broadly yet focally, Black Elk communicated the ruination of North America and
the maltreatment of its original inhabitants:
Once we were happy in our own country and we were seldom hungry, for then the two leggeds
and the four leggeds lived together like relatives ... But then the Wasichus came, and they have
made little islands for us and other little islands for the four leggeds, and always these islands are
becoming smaller, for around them surges the gnawing flood of the Wasichu, and it is dirty with
lies and greed (Neihardt 8).
These islands, this flood, these lies described by Black Elk are emphasized throughout the
development of his life as he tells his personal story and relates it to the broadness of this
devastation. From his childhood, during which the Wasichus were mostly unseen manifestations of
wrong and during which he had the revelation that propelled him forward and offered to him the
doorway to his roots, to his

Beating on Against the Current Essay
Beating On Against the Current Each of us inevitable Each of us limitless each of us with his or
her right upon the earth, Each of us allowed the eternal purports of the earth, Each of us here as
divinely as any is here (Whitman 27). From out of the jazz soaked streets of New York City, arose a
group of young poets and writers overwrought with the opportunity of their lives, and endeavored to
capture its girth through the honesty and vulnerability of their words. These young bohemians
would later lead the Beat Movement, which inspired young Americans throughout the county in
their search for something more than the consumerism and conformity that plagued their society.
Jack Kerouacs On the Roadis a transcendent work that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many found the bleakness and insignificance of modern society enough to merit both withdrawal
and protest.
Throughout On the Road, the influence of the Beat movement s ideals on Kerouac s writing is
overtly apparent. As the narrator meanders up and down the country, both the main characters ,
and the lone hitch hikers they pick up contain an attitude of restlessness which can be seen in
their actions and speak. While hitching a ride from a farmer, as Sal and Dean prepare their story
to tell the man, he stops them simply asking, You boys going somewhere, or just going? This so
elegantly captures the internal state of the author coming out bluntly in the work. The beat
idealism heavily places importance on personal discovery in any way possible, not necessarily
knowing what that path looks like only knowing that you must travel to reach it. Kerouac was
distraught with the complacency of living in one place, and set out with no real place to go, and
as he writes in response to the farmer we didn t know the answer to the question, but it was a damn
good question (Kerouac).
The 1940 s, post war America was looking up, the Great Depression was just coming to an end, but
along with those that so eagerly bought into the consumerism of the time, arose a nation s youth
that was alienated, restless, and dissatisfied. looking for something to experience in a, frenzied
pursuit of extreme exacerbation of the nerves . (Patrick Julian).

  • 2. Monica ` S Presence In Augustine s Life Monica s presence in the spiritual life of Augustine poignantly reveals the profundity of love shared between a mother and her son. In the nine books in which she is mentioned, Monica makes significant decisions that have a substantive impact on Augustine s early life. Despite being a devout Catholic, Monica chooses to delay the baptism of her son until later in life. While this would be unusual for a contemporary member of the Catholic church, Monica believed it was in the best interest of Augustine to defer his baptism, allowing him to purge himself of his sinful and ungodly desires present during his youth with baptism received at an older age. As such, Monica minimizes the accumulation of sin that Augustine may commit after his baptism, thus allowing him to be to be judged more warmly by Godafter his death.... Early on, Augustine is unsure of the validity of his mother s decision, considering her to have failed in her role, as he believed he would be less sinful if baptized at a younger age, eliminating the ritual s absence as an excuse for him to continue committing sin. Augustine s blaming Monica for not leading him on the correct spiritual path, proliferates as he grows older as he deplores her apparent lack of effort in restraining his sexual desires. He laments, ...although she had warned me to guard my virginity...she did not seek to restrain my sexual drive within the limit of the marriage bond (pg. 28). However, Augustine s sentiment that his mother did not put forth great enough effort to restrict his desire slowly dissipates, as he struggles on the path to salvation. Augustine begins to recognize the significant role Monica played in his conversion, emphasizing the role she played as both a physical mother and spiritual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Essay On Eyewitness Testimony Eye witness testimony is an unreliable way of testifying because age differences can be easily influenced and gender roles has an impact in the accuracy for memory recalling. A study conducted of one hundred and ninety six individuals living in Madrid at the time of the terrorist attack demonstrated that age differences affects the accuracy of eye witness testimonies (Vallet, Manzanero, ArГіtegui, Garcia, 2017). Adolescents and children are both influenced differently by emotions and the quality of their memory. With that being said, adults performed better on recalling much accurate details such as sound, odor, central information, visuals, and feelings (Vallet, et al., 2017). The younger group of individuals, children, had doubts on recalling their memories of the event. This is due to the fact that depending on the age and level of development that an individual is in, the strength in their memory can be easily influenced (Vallet, et al., 2017). Another study reveal that females performed better than males for the accuracy of memory recalling for description of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adults can recall memory better than a child would because of the level of development they are in (Vallet, et al., 2017). A child can also be easily manipulated by leading questions that they were subjected to and say what they think the individuals want them to say. In addition, children also create false memories at times (ABC News, 2005). Men have greater confidence recalling their memory which makes them seem reliable, but it is not a reason why eye witness testimony is reliable. There is an exception where an eye witness testimony done by a female can be reliable, it is for description of the place and appearance of a person. In an attempt to regain control, Italian general and dictator, Benito Mussolini created a political party that rivalled the Socialist party. Fascism was an extremely harsh dictatorship type of power that left many people a victim of its cruelty. The problem of unemployment was aggravated by the return of millions of ex soldiers to Italy and a new immigration law of the U.S. government, which restricted entry of immigrants. Encouraged by the success of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, the unemployed workers and peasants stirred up riots and strikes throughout the country. At that time the government was incompetent. It failed to take control of the conditions in the country. Gradually the nationalists grouped together to emerge as the fascist party. Our media would have used that clip of that young child as propaganda so that the general public will support the invasion, but in reality, it was just a child expressing his feelings. Although sports fans wield the power to grow and popularize a sport, they can also prove to be severely detrimental towards a sport. Whether it s deterring a potential fan from following a particular team or inciting violence among fans, the deplorable behavior of various groups of sports fans has caused sports leagues to take preventative measures to ensure the safety and well being of both fans and athletes. Bunuel was a Spanish filmmaker of the 1920 s to the 1970 s. He is often attributed to being one of the major contributors to the surrealist movement of the 1920 s. • 15. Summary Of The Blue Bouquet One might think it a good quality to be a trusting person; someone who takes whatever is given to them as sincere and never looks beyond what they are told. Upon reading The Blue Bouquet this thought is diminished as the protagonist finds himself in a dangerous situation due to his lack of awareness and disregard to warnings. In his state of ignorance, symbols are utilized to demonstrate his lack of knowledge; however, as the story progresses, the change within the protagonist towards wisdom becomes apparent. This newly gained realization and loss of the initial feeling of security he possessed, is shown in his actions following an encounter with a criminal. In Paz s short story, the reader learns the humbling effect of becoming selfaware and how it gears an individual s transition from innocence to experience. As the protagonist aimlessly wanders at night through the town streets, the reader is able to pick up on symbols, as well as foreshadowing that show that the protagonist is not only inexperienced but on the road to misfortune. When the protagonist decides to go on his walk he is warned that it is unsafe to do so by the one eyed owner of the boardinghouse; however, he shrugs it off and decides to go anyway. The unexplained mentioning of the owners missing eye suggests that there is reasoning for his words and hints towards what is to come if the protagonist disregards his cautions. His reckless behaviour also indicates that while innocently trusting his surroundings he feels as if he knows everything. The protagonist then steps outside and is engulfed by the darkness of night; he is blindly stumbling along the cobblestone street. The author pairs the symbols of night and darkness to suggest the unknown chaos and danger that the protagonist is on route for. In addition, blindness is used to suggest his ignorance and limited senses. Lastly, the narrator describes a white wall that was crumbled in places (p.163) and how he was blinded by such whiteness. (p.163) The colour white is a sign for innocence hence making the crumbling of the wall reveal the upcoming loss of the protagonist s innocence through the means of trauma. • 18. All that Heaven Allows by Douglas Sirk In the 1950 s the melodrama genre came to age and there is no better example than Douglas Sirk s All that Heaven Allows. The melodrama followed some basic characteristics which can be identified in the film. First and foremost the narrative of the melodrama focused on the family. All that Heaven Allows follows the narrative of the typical melodrama but at the same time also challenges the social conventions. While Sirk follows many of the key themes he does so in a more detached fashion. The protagonist Cary is bound to her community by her social class. Change was occurring in society and the melodrama displayed people s restraint to this. In All that Heaven Allows Sirk began his focus on the female and her desires in contrast to the more conservative male focused melodrama. As with the melodrama the legibility of the story, displayed through the plot, is simple and easy to follow. Our engagement with the story depends on our understanding of the pattern of change and stability, cause and effect, time and space (Bordwell and Thompson, 2008). The linear time flow of the filmallows for it s simple understanding. This is added to by the expressiveness of the melodrama, where everything is brought into the open and nothing is left unsaid. The expressiveness of the melodrama is also represented in the highly expressive mise en scene. Sirks use of colour, the human figure, camera work, lighting and music allow him to portray suppressed meaning and significance. (b) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When people are climbing mountains such as Mount Everest or Mount Rainier they know what kind of danger they are placing themselves in. Many people think that because the services exist they can abuse it and call for help at any time. Even though these services exist they should only be used in a crisis, because more people than one climber are being put at risk. As the mountainsgrow in popularity more people want to travel to them. Many companies are going in debt because of climbers who think they know what they are doing when they do not. Furthermore, the reason some people have for needing rescued are ridiculous. These are three main topics as to why climbers should not be entitled to a rescue. To start off, people who climb places such as Mount Everestand Mount Rainier put more than themselves at risk. Many will argue that this is the reason rescue services exist. As the largest craft brewery and the seventh largest brewery in the United States, the Boston BeerCompany is facing growing competitive threats from larger breweries and premium imported beer companies, including Anheuser Busch InBev, MillerCoors, Heineken, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium Brewing, and Crown Imports. I shall also be studying which socially engaging visual practice is most effective and why. It is thought that scientists have discovered only 17.5 million species on this world; which seems quite a significant amount but when also considering that it s only thought that 20% of them are estimated to live, it seems like nothing. Unfortunately, not every single animal and organism can be protected from such problems as deforestation, climate change, illegal wildlife trading, pollution, oil and gas development. One example would be forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet; they produce vital oxygen and provide homes for people and wildlife. Many of the worlds most threatened and endangered animals live in the forests, and 1.6 million people rely on the benefits the forests offer (World Wildlife, 2015). Animal endangerment is a subject we are all very aware of but the majority of us fall into the sad category of not actually doing anything about it. McIver University of Oregon Abstract This paper concerns the notoriously well known successful treatment program, Alcoholics Anonymous twelve step program, and contrasts it to what would be referred to as a revised version of the original program. Alcoholics Anonymous has been one of the primary sources of addiction recovery in individuals for numerous years. It allows its participants, who are deemed to be part of an international fellowship of both men and women alike, an opportunity to join in a camaraderie that is self supporting, multiracial, nonprofessional, and conveniently available in a variety of locations. It aims to let its participants share personal experiences and partake in a group atmosphere where the lead counselor bans judgment. The fundamental values of Alcoholics Anonymous exist in the twelve core steps that attendees are encouraged to follow in an effort to redeem control of their alcohol addiction problem. Alcoholics Anonymous has been proven to change participants principal values and assist them in changing their perceived outlook on life for an increased potential at living a healthier and addiction free lifestyle. There is a fine line between a hallucination and an illusion . A hallucination differs from an illusion in that illusions are a product of misinterpretations of external stimuli whereas hallucinations need no such requirement making them an entirely internal process. A true hallucinationcan also be distinguished from a pseudo hallucination in which the individual can recognise that what they re seeing or hearing is not real. Hallucinations are also different from voluntary mental imagery, in that the thought has not uncontrollably forced itself onto our minds. Slade and Bentall (1988, cited in Blackmore, 2010) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The best way to induce hallucinations, or where they occur the most, is through sensory deprivation. Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is a common condition among people who have lost their sight in which they suffer visual hallucinations. Many studies have looked at the syndrome in order to provide a better understanding of visual hallucinations. One study exhibited a 64 year old blind woman suffering from complex visual hallucinations (McNamara, Heros, Boller, 1982). It was found that neurosurgical removal of a large suprasellar meningioma helped remove her hallucinatory experiences. Such a case study provides evidence that hallucinations are related to both a sensory deprivation and an impairment in CNS functioning. Another study claimed that, through looking at patients suffering from CBS, the hallucinations were due to an interruption in the visual association areas of the cerebral cortex. The researchers suggested that hallucinatory experiences could terminate on improving visual function or addressing social isolation (Menon, Rahman, Menon, Dutton, 2003). Deprivation of hearing can also induce hallucinations. Sometimes the deaf hear hallucinated sounds they may even hear whole orchestras playing. Various case studies have demonstrated such a claim. His writings and philosophy greatly contributed to the formation and construction of modern thought. He possessed an extensive, creative imagination, and developed his own imagination theories in his writings. However, his personal life was absorbed with various family problems, and he experienced much solitary anguish. This resulted in depression for Coleridge, and he often based his stories and poems on themes of dejection, sadness, and melancholy. But he was neither a nihilist nor a pessimist by any stretch. He believed in the healing powers of love, and had hope for recovery. His writings were described as being versatile, and scholars have found a great variety of themes, styles, and techniques in his literature (McKusick par. 1 3). Coleridge was a firm believer that there is a connection between madness and moral evil. He felt that in the midst of some horror, people may tend to think that God has left them, and then they would blame their mental disease on demons. He expressed this message through the protagonist he created in his longest poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The Mariner experiences this exact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Green River Killer By Gary Leon Ridgway Green River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway Elizabeth Sabie Florida International University Green River Killer Gary Leon Ridgway In the summer of 1982, while playing in the woods, children found the body of a young teen was floating in the Green River in King County, Washington. Sixteen year old Wendy Lee Coffield was found strangled with her own panties and tossed into the river like a piece of refuse. Her murder sparked an investigation that spanned three decades. Coffield s body was the first of many found in or near the Green River in a murder spree that remained unsolved for twenty years. The victims were young women, often prostitutes or runaways, who hitchhiked along Highway 99, a dilapidated stretch of the Sea Tac Highway known for its strip clubs, drugs, and seedy motels (Montaldo). While the majority of the murders occurred between 1982 1984, police had little success in tracking what they soon realized was a serial killer. Within a year the police had found four more bodies of young women, and they formed a task force to apprehend the Green River Killer. It became apparent that the killer had chosen this stretch of highway to hunt for his victims. The women found here lived in such ways that no one really noticed if they went missing. This proved even more problematic for the task force, because they were searching for a killer who had committed the murders months prior. The bodies had decomposed and it was extremely difficult ... • 41. Child Rearing Controversy There are numerous philosophies on how to raise children. Several parents adopt the concepts their own parents used, others seek advice from friends and there are those that read books about parenting. Parents come in various and diverse forms, each approaching parenting in ways as distinct as their personalities. Philosophies on child rearing can be grouped into two styles; authoritarian, authoritative parenting. These two styles are similar sounding, but have nuanced differences. Authoritarian parents hold their children to an exceedingly high level of status and success. In this style of parenting, children are expected to follow the strict rules established by the parents. Failure in following rules typically results in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using authoritative parenting style requires setting boundaries while still being able to listen and be patient with the child. Here is an example of the authoritarian parenting style: A child is caught hitting their playmate. The parent responds by grabbing the child and spanking them without any explanation of why hitting is immoral. Thus punishing the child with the same misconduct the child has committed results in mocking of the punishment behavior. Using authoritarian style requires the ability to be dominantly harsh while giving punishment without an explanation. There are abundant differences in these two styles, but the most significant discrepancy is in the end product: the children. An authoritative parent will preserve the love and respect of his children and, when they reach adulthood, they will continue this custom with their own children. An authoritative parent will know he has done his job well in the raising of those children, because the relationships that were built will incessantly last. The parents who choose a benign approach will obtain the rewards of having children that will be the ones who have a good work ethic and who succeed in school because they wish to please their parents. The parents who choose to rule by fear will see quite dissimilar results: their children are probable to react out of that terror, which will only last as long as they are young; ... In the final study, Kibira, Nansubuga, Tumwesigye, Atuyambe, Makumbi (2014) explored the relation of HIV prevalence and risky sexual behaviors among circumcised and uncircumcised men in Uganda. This national survey was divided into a two stage stratum cluster sampling that involved selecting households for interview (Kibira et al., 2014). During the interview of each household, blood samples were collected for HIV status, circumcision status, and interview questions that addressed risky sexual behaviors including: unprotected sex, numbers of partners, and transactional sex (Kibira et al., 2014). Based on the result, there s a direct correlation of circumcised males with lower HIV prevalence among all age groups. HIV prevalence was 35 37% lower in the circumcised men, after controlling for several variables (Kibira et al., 2014). How Connection is Essential to Resonance: A Comparison of Black Elk Speaks and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee Beginning hundreds of years ago, Native Americans experienced an invasion. Perpetrated first by European explorers, then conquerors, and, finally, colonists, the first people to inhabit the Americas experienced a devastation of their land, culture, and dignity from people who hungered for their land and resources. Despite these tribulations, the Native American identity could never truly be destroyed. The novels Black Elk Speaks by John G. Neihardt and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown explore this truth by recounting the oppression of Native Americans and illustrating the incoming of the white man through the indigenous ... In the case of Black Elk Speaks, the content focuses on the life story of Black Elk, a figurehead of the Oglala Sioux tribe of what is now primarily South Dakota. Neihardt s approach of simply listening to Black Elk as he told his story in his native tongue and then seeking translation granted Black Elk the autonomy of his expression and brought to the table realism tinged with mysticism, a representation of the Native American experience in a manner not intruded by commentary or analysis. Speaking broadly yet focally, Black Elk communicated the ruination of North America and the maltreatment of its original inhabitants: Once we were happy in our own country and we were seldom hungry, for then the two leggeds and the four leggeds lived together like relatives ... But then the Wasichus came, and they have made little islands for us and other little islands for the four leggeds, and always these islands are becoming smaller, for around them surges the gnawing flood of the Wasichu, and it is dirty with lies and greed (Neihardt 8). These islands, this flood, these lies described by Black Elk are emphasized throughout the development of his life as he tells his personal story and relates it to the broadness of this devastation. From his childhood, during which the Wasichus were mostly unseen manifestations of wrong and during which he had the revelation that propelled him forward and offered to him the doorway to his roots, to his ... From out of the jazz soaked streets of New York City, arose a group of young poets and writers overwrought with the opportunity of their lives, and endeavored to capture its girth through the honesty and vulnerability of their words. Many found the bleakness and insignificance of modern society enough to merit both withdrawal and protest. Throughout On the Road, the influence of the Beat movement s ideals on Kerouac s writing is overtly apparent. As the narrator meanders up and down the country, both the main characters , and the lone hitch hikers they pick up contain an attitude of restlessness which can be seen in their actions and speak. While hitching a ride from a farmer, as Sal and Dean prepare their story to tell the man, he stops them simply asking, You boys going somewhere, or just going? This so elegantly captures the internal state of the author coming out bluntly in the work. The beat idealism heavily places importance on personal discovery in any way possible, not necessarily knowing what that path looks like only knowing that you must travel to reach it. Kerouac was distraught with the complacency of living in one place, and set out with no real place to go, and as he writes in response to the farmer we didn t know the answer to the question, but it was a damn good question (Kerouac).
