2. Union Budget 2022: What can be expected
for education sector?
As the Government of India has announced to present the
Union Budget on February 1, 2022, the talks and

in various sectors, including Education have begun.
As the Union Budget will be presented amid the COVID-

3. Open Data Week launched
Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry launched Open Data Week on
January 17, 2022 to encourage the adoption of open data and the
promotion of innovation across India’s urban ecosystem.
All 100 smart cities will participate in the event.
The Open Data Week is a part of the series of initiatives being
undertaken by MoHUA to promote awareness and use of open data
ahead of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav - Smart Cities: Smart
Urbanization’ conference, which is scheduled to be held in Surat in
February 2022.
The open data week will witness participation from all 100 Smart Cities
that will be publishing high-quality datasets and data blogs on the
Smart Cities Open Data Portal.
Over 3,800 datasets and more than 60 data stories are already
available on the Smart Cities Open Data Portal for the relevant
stakeholders to analyse and uncover actionable insights.

4. Cartoonist Narayan Debnath, creator of
‘Bantul The Great’, ‘Handa Bhonda’, passes
away at 97
Cartoonist Narayan Debnath, the creator of popular Bengali comic
characters ‘Nonte Phonte’, ‘Bantul The Great’, ‘Handa Bhonda’,
passed away in Kolkata on January 18, 2022, at the age of 97.
The hospital where he undergoing treatment informed that he
died after a prolonged illness. Debnath was admitted to the private
hospital On December 24, 2021, and was on ventilator support.
Narayan Debnath was awarded Padma Shree in 2021.
West Bengal Government had handed over him the country’s
fourth-highest civilian award while he was undergoing treatment.
Earlier, the beloved cartoonist was also awarded Bangabibhsuan in
2013 as well as the Sahitya Akademi Award.

5. Narendra Goenka takes over as new AEPC
Chairman
Narendra Kumar Goenka took charge as the new Chairman of the Apparel
Export Promotion Council (AEPC) during its executive committee meeting
held on January 17, 2022.
Goenka succeeds Padma Shri awardee Dr. A Sakthivel in the position.
A Sakthivel had been appointed to the position for the period 2020-21.
After assuming charge of the council, Goenka said that India is currently
witnessing a robust growth in apparel exports.
He stated that going by the export orders in hand, the positive trend will
further accelerate in the last quarter.
He further stated that the apparel exports were 22 percent up at $1.46
billion in December 2021 in comparison to $1.20 billion in December 2020.
He also noted that the apparel exports in the first nine months (April to
December) of the current fiscal stood at $11.13 billion, which is 35 percent
more than it was during the same April-December period in 2020. He
added saying that the trend is getting stronger.

6. PM Modi's speech at WEF Davos Agenda
2022: PM Modi introduces P3 movement,
says best time to invest in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the "P3 (Pro-Planet People)
movement" during his ‘State of the World’ special address at the
World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda 2022 on January 17, 2022.
PM Modi highlighted that our lifestyle poses a big challenge for the
climate. He emphasised that the 'throw away culture and
consumerism have made the climate challenge more serious.
Hence, he said that it is very important to rapidly shift today's 'take-
make-use-dispose', economy towards a circular economy.
He stated that the same spirit is at the core of the Mission LIFE idea
that he had discussed at COP-26. LIFE (Lifestyle for Environment) is a
vision of such a Resilient and Sustainable Lifestyle that will be useful in
not only dealing with the Climate Crisis but also in dealing with
futuristic unpredictable challenges.

7. FIFA awards 2021 winners: Robert
Lewandowski, Alexia Putellas take top
honours
Robert Lewandowski has been was awarded the best
men’s player in the world on January 17, 2022, at the
FIFA awards 2021.
Robert Lewandowski said on a video link that he is very
honoured to win this trophy which was presented by
club officials during the online ceremony hosted at FIFA
headquarters in Zurich.
In the women’s award at FIFA awards 2021, Alexia
Putellas added the FIFA trophy to her Ballon d’Or victory.
She captained Barcelona to its first Women’s Champions
League title. Chelsea won both the awards for best
Coach, with Emma Hayes winning the best women’s
coach and Thomas Tuchel winning the men’s award.
