2. Lunar New Year 2022
The Lunar New Year 2022 is falling on February 1, 2022.
The Lunar New Year is also known as Chinese New Year and it marks
the beginning of the new lunar calendar.
The Lunar New Year begins with the rising of the second new moon
after the winter solstice on December 21st.
Hence, every year the date falls on a different day, usually between
January 21st and February 21st, as per the Gregorian calendar.
The Lunar New Year celebrations are marked with people decorating
their houses with red for good luck and children getting money in
bright red envelopes.
The celebrations last for two weeks. This year, the Chinese New Year
will end on 15 February 15 with the lantern festival, which marks the full
moon.

3. Budget session of Parliament begins:
President addresses join sitting of Lok Sabha,
Rajya Sabha
The budget session of the Parliament began on January 31, 2022 with
President Ram Nath Kovind's joint address to the two houses of the
Parliament- Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The President began his speech by hailing the lakhs of freedom fighters
who prioritised their duties and helped India get its rights.
The President remembered all the personalities who contributed to the
development journey of India in the 75 years of independence and
highlighted that his government believes that remembering the past and
learning from it is very important for the safe future of the country.
The President further said, "Many lives lost due to COVID. Even in such
circumstances our Centre, States, doctors, nurses, scientists, our healthcare
workers worked as a team...I am thankful to our health care and frontline
workers."

4. Economic Survey 2022: 8-8.5% GDP growth
projected for FY23, 9.2 percent for ongoing
FY22
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic
Survey 2021-22 and the Statistical Appendix in the Lok Sabha on
January 31, 2022.
The Economic Survey 2022 projects India's GDP to grow at 8-8.5% in
the Fiscal Year 2022-23. The GDP growth for the ongoing financial year
2021-22 has been estimated to be 9.2 percent.
The Economic Survey 2021-2022 has been compiled by Principal
Economic Adviser Sanjeev Sanyal and his team of advisors, informed
the new Chief Economic Advisor Dr V Anantha Nageswara during his
press conference.
Dr V Anantha Nageswara informed that the government has persuaded
a four-pronged approach, which includes short term support to
economy, especially to vulnerable sections during these uncertain times
while keeping a firm eye on physical stability and at the same time
never letting go of the opportunity that a crisis provides to initiates
structural and supply-side reform.

5. BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover goes
on voluntary leave, firm begins independent
audit
BharatPe co-founder and managing director Ashneer Grover has
gone on a voluntary leave till March-end. A week after the
announcement, his wife Madhuri Jain Grover, who is the Head of
Controls at BharatPe, has also gone on leave.
This comes amid the news of the firm undertaking an
independent audit of its internal processes and systems
The development follows a controversy involving an audio clip,
which was posted on social media, in which BharatPe co-founder
Ashneer Grover is heard verbally abusing a Kotak Mahindra Bank
employee.
Ashneer Grover has been in news lately as he is one of the sharks
on Shark Tank India show.

7. Australian Open 2022: Rafael Nadal wins
historic 21st Grand Slam title, defeats Daniil
Medvedev in Australian Open final
Rafael Nadal wins a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title after making a stunning
comeback in the men's singles final at Australian Open 2022.
He defeated world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in the final that
lasted 5 hours and 24 minutes.
With the historic win, the Spaniard has broken his tie with Novak Djokovic and Roger
Federer for all-time record of Grand Slam Men's Singles.
This is Nadal's first Australian Open win in 13 years. Nadal had last won the Australian
Open title in 2009.
He though reached the finals of Australian Open four times after that in 2012, 2014,
2017 and 2019.
Daniil Medvedev had begun the Australian Open final on a high by winning the first
two sets, 6-2 and 7-6. Nadal fought back to claim the third set 6-4 in 64 minutes to
narrowly save the game and making it 1-2.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion then struck first in the fourth set to break Medvedev
in Game 3, eventually taking the set by 6-4 to draw level.

8. Beating Retreat 2022: 1000 drones lit up sky
in various patterns including Tricolour, Indian
flag and Mahatma Gandhi
A grand drone show dazzled the sky during the Beating
Retreat Ceremony 2022 held at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi
on January 29, 2022.
The 10-minute drone show lit up the sky in various
patterns including India's map, the Tricolour, the lion
symbol and Mahatma Gandhi's image.
The Beating Retreat Ceremony marked the culmination of
the Republic Day celebrations 2022.
This year, the ceremony was conducted at a grand scale to
celebrate 75 years of Independence, which is being
celebrated as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

9. Dr V Anantha Nageswaran takes over as new
Chief Economic Advisor
Dr V. Anantha Nageswaran assumed charge as the new Chief
Economic Advisor on January 29, 2022.
He was appointed to the post by the government, succeeding
KV Subramanian who stepped down on October 8, 2021 to
return to academia after the completion of his three-year
term.
Dr V. Anantha Nageswaran's appointment comes just days
before the tabling of the 2021-22 Economic Survey on January
31, 2022 and presentation of Union Budget 2022-23 on
February 1st.
Nageswaran till recently served as the Dean of the IFMR
Graduate School of Business. He was also a distinguished
Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University.
