2. US FDA authorizes AstraZeneca’s Evusheld
for pre-exposure prevention of COVID-19
The United States health authorities on December 8, 2021,
authorized the use of synthetic antibodies that have been
developed by AstraZeneca for preventing Coronavirus
infections in individuals who react badly to the COVID-19
vaccines.
The emergency use authorization has been given to
AstraZeneca’s Evusheld, a long-acting antibody combination,
for the prevention of COVID-19.
The first doses of AstraZeneca’s Evusheld are expected to be
available soon. It is also for the first time that US Food and
Drug Administration has given EUA (Emergency Use
Authorization) for such a purely preventive treatment.

3. Farmer's suspend 15-month protest, to
vacate protest sites at Delhi border from
December 11
After 15 long months, the farmer leaders have
decided to suspend their agitation and will
vacate the protest sites at the Delhi border from
December 11, 2021. Farmer leader Gurnam Singh
Charuni said, "We have decided to suspend our
agitation. We will hold a review meeting on Jan
15. If Govt doesn't fulfill its promises, we could
resume our agitation."
The decision after a long review meeting by
farmer leaders of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha.
Another farmer leader Darshan Pal Singh also
confirmed that the protesting farmers will vacate
the protest sites on December 11.

4. Ken-Betwa River interlinking Project; all you
need to know about project worth Rs.44,605
crores
he funding and implementation of the Ken-Betwa River
interlinking project have been approved by the Union
Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The total cost of the ambitious Ken-Betwa interlinking of river
projects has been assessed to be Rs. 44, 605 crores at 2020-
21 price levels.
The project of river inter-linking will be completed in the
period of 8 years.
The Cabinet has approved the central support of Rs. 39,317
crores for the project, covering a grant of Rs. 36,290 crores
and a loan of Rs. 3,027 crores.

5. Rohit Sharma replaces Virat Kohli as India's
new ODI, T20I captain
Rohit Sharma has been named as the new captain of the
Indian ODI and T20I teams. The All-India Senior Selection
Committee announced the same on December 8, 2021.
He will be succeeding Virat Kohli, who had announced his
decision to step down as the T20 captain in September
2021.
Rohit Sharma already took the helm as the T20 captain of
Team India during its recent T20 series against New Zealand
in November 2021.
He will take over as the ODI captain during the three-match
ODI against South Africa, which will start from January 2022.

chopper crash in Tamil Nadu: Group Captain

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed the Parliament on
December 9, 2021 about the IAF helicopter crash involving
Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and
other senior defence personnel near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu.
The Minister said, " With profound grief and heavy heart, I
stand to convey the unfortunate news of the crash of the
military helicopter in the noon of 8th December 2021, with
India's first Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Bipin Rawat
onboard."
The Minister informed that the last rites of CDS General Bipin
Rawat will be performed with full military honours.

7. 2021 Anti-corruption Champions Award:
Malawi's Martha Chizuma named among 12
Anti-corruption Champions
The US State Department of State has named 12 new Anti-corruption
Champions who have demonstrated leadership, courage and impact in
preventing, exposing, and combating corruption.
The names were announced on the eve of International Anticorruption Day
and the Summit for Democracy.
The central theme of Summit for Democracy convened by US President Joe
Biden was combating corruption.
The Summit seeks to bring together nations to learn from each other about
what works best in fighting corruption and how to address the
shortcomings.
This is the second group of International Anticorruption Champions.
The International Anti-Corruption Champions Award was constituted in
February 2021 when an Indian Social Activist Anjali Bharadwaj was named
among the first group of 12 courageous individuals.

9. IAF Helicopter crashes
n a tragic incident, an Indian Air Force helicopter Mi-17V5 carrying India's
most senior military general, Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat,
his wife Madhulika and senior defence officers and IAF pilots crashed in
the Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu on December 8, 2021.
Out of the total 14 passengers on board, 13 were confirmed to be dead
by the Indian Air Force including CDS General Bipin Rawat and his wife.
General Bipin Rawat was India's first Chief of Defence Staff. He was on his
way to deliver a lecture at the Defence Services Staff College in
Wellington.
This is one of the worst chopper crashes in the history of the Indian
Armed forces.
The tragic chopper crash sent shockwaves across the country and the
country's top leaders dropped all their scheduled events to convene
emergency meetings to decide the next line of action following such
horrific news.
