4. Introduction
 Communication can occur via various processes and methods, Depending on
the channels used and the system of communication, there can be various
types of communication.
 Informal channels transmit official news through unofficial and informal
communicative interactions known as the ‘grapevine’.
 These informal communication networks include tea-time gossips, casual
gathering, lunch time meeting and so on.
 The grapevine is not always negative for organization and can in fact be
helpful as it helps in positive growth building by acting as safety value for
pent-up emotions. It may help in building up organization solidarity and
harmonic.

 Communication is an act or instance of transmitting
 As per The American Management Association “Communication is a
behavior that results in exchange of meaning.”
 A process by which information is exchanged between individuals
through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior.
 Communication is exchange of facts, ideas, options or emotions by
two or more persons.

 Downward communication is the flow of information and messages from a
higher level inside an organization to a lower one.
 Effective downward communication is crucial to an organization's success.
 Upper management can easily communicate goals and assign responsibilities
regarding achieving those goals.
 A communication from the general manager of company to branch manager is
an example of downward communication.

8. Upward Communication
 Upward Communication is completely reverse process than Downward
Communication.
 Upward communication is the process of information flowing from the lower
levels to the upper levels.
 This type of communication is becoming more popular in organizations as
traditional forms of communication are becoming less popular.
 An example of upward communication is a branch manager submitting report
to the manager.

9. Horizontal Communication
 Horizontal communication refers to the flow of messages across functional
areas on the same level of an organization.
 Effective use of horizontal communication in the workplace can enhance
productivity by making information sharing, problem solving, collaboration,
and conflict resolution more efficient.
 A communication between two branch managers having equal authorities is an
example of Horizontal Communication.

10. Diagonal Communication
 The sharing of information among different structural levels within a
business.
 When a person gives instructions or shares information outside his
department/field, than it is called Diagonal Communication.
 A manger from Marketing gives instruction to an assistant manager of
Manufacturing department is an example of Diagonal Communication.

11. Vertical Communication
 Vertical communication in an organization is communication that flows up and
down through the organization's hierarchical structure.
 Vertical communication is a combination of upward and downward
communication.
 An upward and downward communication between a manger and a branch
manager is an example of Vertical Communication.
