This document provides an overview of narrative research. It discusses:
- What narrative research is, including collecting and telling stories about people's lives and experiences.
- How narrative research developed in education, with Clandinin and Connelly first overviewing it in 1990.
- Key characteristics of narrative research designs like focusing on individual experiences, chronology of events, life stories, and restorying narratives.
- Common techniques in narrative research like interviews, memoirs, letter writing, and analyzing stories for themes.
This presentation includes Introduction, Importance, Types, Characteristics, Steps, Research Tools, Ethical Issues, Validity Issue, Evaluation and Educational Implication of Narrative Research Design
The methodological use of story
Focuses on the way in which people make and use stories to interpret the world.
Narratives are not ‘simply’ a set of facts – social products produced by people within the context of social, historical and cultural locations.
Interpretive devices through which people present themselves
Rather than ‘what happened’ – ‘what is the significance of the event’?

Narrative research is a term that subsumes a group of approaches that in turn rely on the written or spoken words or visual representation of individuals. These approaches typically focus on the lives of individuals as told through their own stories. The emphasis in such approaches is on the story, typically both what and how is narrated.
Narrative research can be considered both a research method in itself but also the phenomenon under study.
This presentation slide was prepared by Niroj Dahal for second contact session for M Phil students at Nepal Open University (http://nou.edu.np/), Faculty of Social Science and Education.
Case study is a strategy for doing research which involves an empirical investigation of a particular contemporary phenomenon with its real life context using multiple sources of evidence.”

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

7. What is Narrative Research
In narrative research,
researchers describe the lives of
individuals,
collect and tell stories about
people’s lives,
and write narratives of
individual experiences..
8. How did narrative research develop?
In 1990 Clandinin and Connelly first overview of narrative
research in education.
9. Narrative research in Education
narrative research is conducted
to increase understanding of central issue
related to teaching and learning through
the;
telling
and retelling of teacher's
stories.
Example
How do teachers confront, and deal with,
high school students who have drug
problems?
10. How do you use narrative designs?
When individuals are willing to tell their
stories
Want to report personal experiences in a
particular setting
Want a close bond with participants.
When you have a chronology of events
12. Major Characteristics of Narrative Research
• Experiences of an individual
social and personal interactions.
• Chronology of experiences
past,
present,
and future experiences/ sequence of events
• Life stories
first-person,(by the participant)
oral accounts(interview) of actions.
• Restorying
After telling a story by the individuals about their
experiences, narrative researchers retell (or restory or remap)
the story in their own words.
• Coding the field texts(data) for themes or categories.
• Incorporating the context or setting into the story or
themes.
• Collaboration between the researcher and the participants
in the study, such as negotiating field texts.
13.
14. Restorying
The process in which
the researcher gathers
stories; analyzes them
for key elements of the
story such as the time,
place, or plot; and
rewrites the story to
place it in a
chronological
sequence.
15. Oral history
A method for collecting data from
participants by asking them to share
their experiences
i.e Interviews
18. Letter writing
Engaging the researcher
and participant in a
dialogue.
19. Autobiographical and
biographical writing
A biography is a form
of narrative study in
which the researcher
writes and records the
experiences of another
person’s life. Typically,
researchers construct
biographies from
records and archives
20. Other narrative
data sources
Documents such as
lesson plans,
newsletters, etc.
Teaching portfolios
Personal
philosophies
21. Narrative Research Techniques
Writing the narrative
The final step in the narrative research process
The data collected throughout the study finds its
way into the final written account
The collaboration between the researcher and
participant becomes critical at this point
22. Steps in narrative research
Identify a phenomenon
that addresses
an educational problem
Purposefully select an
individual to learn
about the phenomenon
Write a story about the
participant’s personal
and social experiences
Validate the accuracy of
the report
Collaborate with
participant storyteller in
all phases of research
Restory or retell
The individual’s
storyCollect stories from
the individual that
Reflect personal experience
Have them
Tell story
Collect other
Field texts
Build in past,
Present, future
Build in place
or setting
Describe their
story
Analyze story
for
themes
23. PROCESS .
The narrative research process is a highly personal ,intimate approach to
educational research that demands a high degree of caring and sensitivity
on the part of the researcher.
Identifies a phenomenon to explore, A researcher first identifies a phenomenon
to explore,
selects an individual,
seeks permissions,
and make initial research questions.
Determine role of researcher
the research site,
reciprocity,
and ethics
Data collection
data collection methods
Collaboration
the researcher and participant collaborate to construct the narrative and validate the
accuracy of the story.
Writing narrative
and write the narrative account.
24. To illustrate the steps in planning and conducting narrative research, we build on
the example of our teacher, Hilda.(Gay 2015).
Example:
Hilda, a teacher at High School, has students in
her class who appear "distracted” or under the
influence of drugs.
1. identify the purpose and phenomenon to explore.
The purpose of the study at High School is to describe Hilda’s experiences in
confronting and dealing with a student who has drug problem.
The specific phenomenon that will be explored is that of adolescent drug use in
high school.
2. Identify an individual who can help you learn about the
phenomenon.
Hilda, a teacher at High School, has volunteered to work collaboratively with the
researcher.
25. 3. Develop initial narrative research
questions.
What have been Hilda’s experiences in
confronting and dealing with a student who
has a drug problem?
What life experiences influence the
Hilda ?
26. 4. Consider the researcher’s role and obtain
necessary permissions.
The researcher should seek permission from
the Institutional Review Board (IRB), as well as any other
permission required by the school or school district.
In addition, the researcher must
ask Hilda to sign an informed consent form.
5. Develop data collection methods
A narrative researcher will utilize a variety of narrative
research data collection techniques,
including interviewing and examining written and
nonwritten sources of data.
27. 6. Collaborate with the research
participant
The researcher and Hilda will
collaboratively participate in
restorying the narrative and then
validating the final written account .
7. Write the narrative account.
