What is Narrative inquiry?
The methodological use of story
Focuses on the way in which people make and use stories to interpret the world
Narratives are not ‘simply’ a set of facts – social products produced by people
within the context of social, historical and cultural locations
Interpretive devices through which people present themselves
Rather than ‘what happened’ – ‘what is the significance of the event’?
A way of understanding and
inquiring into experience through
“collaboration between researcher
and participants, over time, in a
place or series of places, and in
social interaction with milieus”
(Clandinin and Connelly, 2000)
What is Narrative inquiry?
Narrative Research
is a form of qualitative study
that relies heavily on story
telling as a mean of
understanding in social
sciences (Marshall &
Rossman, 2016)
1.
Why Narrative
Research?
“Provided the voice for those
normally unheard.
“ Explores educational
research problems by
analyzing the experiences of
a individual
2.
What are the common
characteristics of
narrative research?
“ Individual Experiences
▫ Social and personal interactions of
the story teller
“ Chronology of Experiences
▫ Emphasizing the sequence of
events
“ Collecting Individual Stories
▫ Collecting first person accounts of
events
“ Restorying
▫ Retelling the individuals’
story in sequential order
“ Coding Data
▫ Coding the data from the
stories into themes to add
depth and insight
“ Collaboration
▫ Actively involving the
inquirer and inquiry as the
story unfolds
3.
How is Narrative
Research done?
“ Drawing and representing
individuals within a social
and cultural context…
“ Researchers gather
qualitative stories through
interviews and conversations
“ These stories are called
“FIELD TEXTS”
“ Field Texts can also be
collected in the form of:
Autobiographies
and biographies
Pictures
4.
Steps to perform
Narrative Research
“
Purposefully select an
individual
Collect the story
from the individual
Restory or retell the story
while collaborating with
the storyteller
Rewrite the story about
the experiences
Validate the accuracy of
the story
Identify a phenomenon
that addresses and
educational issue
5.
Critiques of
Narrative Research
“ Are the stories authentic?
Have the participants told the “real” story?
Have the participants contribute fake data?
“
Have the researchers been
true to the participants?
Have the participants’ race become lost?
Do the researchers have
permission to tell the story?
Does the researcher gain at the expense
of the participant?
6. Validation Practices
of Narrative Research
Using quotes and precise language
Including multiple field texts
6. Validation Practices
of Narrative Research
Triangulation of the data
6. Validation Practices
of Narrative Research
