This document provides an overview of marine sediments, including their sources, classification, and types. Sediments are deposited through natural processes and come from rivers, glaciers, wind, coastal erosion, volcanoes, and groundwater. Sediments are classified as either oceanic/pelagic found in open ocean, or neritic found near continental margins. The main types of sediments are terrigenous derived from land; biogenous from plants and animals; hydrogenous formed on the sea floor; and cosmogenous from outer space. Examples of each type include Sahara dust, turbidites, coccolithophores, evaporites, and hydrothermal vents. Grain size is also an important characteristic measured using specialized equipment
