This document provides instructions for inserting an oropharyngeal airway (OPA) in an unconscious patient with an obstructed airway. Key steps include: selecting the correctly sized OPA using measurement guidelines; opening the airway with a head tilt or jaw thrust maneuver; displacing the tongue and inserting the OPA toward the hard palate; advancing it until the flange rests on the lips; reassessing breathing and airway sounds; and continuously monitoring the patient or reassessing every 5 minutes. The OPA is removed if the patient vomits, regains consciousness or a gag reflex.
