Captain James Cook Essay
Captain James Cook was an English seaman who lived in the eighteenth century. He was one of the
world s greatest explorers. Between 1768 and l779, he made three great voyages of exploration to the
Pacific Ocean. The purpose of these voyages was to get information about lands already known and to
discover new lands.
Captain Cook s first voyage began in August of 1768. On this voyage, he had only one ship with a
crew of 94 seamen. He sailed south from England across the Atlantic Ocean and around the tip of
South America. Then, he sailed west into the Pacific Ocean. Eventually, he discovered the large
islands of New Zealand and drew maps of their coasts. Then, he continued west until he came to the
east coast of Australia. He found this coast to be fertile, a fact which was not known in Europe at that
time. He returned to England in July of 1771.
In the next year, Captain Cook began his second voyage of exploration. On this voyage, he had two
ships and about 200 seamen. The purpose of this voyage was to try to discover if there was a continent
other than Australia in the South pacific. Re sailed from England in July of 1772. When he reached the
South Pacific, he turned directly south into the cold Antarctic ... Show more content on

His father was an amateur musician who used to keep his band s instruments at the Gillespie house.
Whenever he had a chance, Dizzy used to try to pay some of the band s instruments. In fact, he
experimented with all of them, but he preferred to play wind instruments such as the trumpet and the
trombone. Dizzy always had strong lungs, so it was easy for him to play wind instruments. In a short
time, Dizzy became very good at playing both the trumpet and the trombone. He never had a teacher
or an actual lesson. By the time he was 13 years old, Dizzy became so good at the trumpet that he

Traction Alopecia In Children
Children are just as susceptible to traction alopecia as adults are. The causes of traction alopecia in
children are similar to grown ups. Hairstyles such as pigtails, cornrows and braiding the hair can cause
hair loss in kids. When a child s hair is repeatedly styled tightly, over a period of time hair follicles
become damaged and incapable of producing healthy hairs. The hair follicle may become so damaged
that it stops producing hairs altogether. Hair loss occurs in the areas of the scalp that are pulled the
most, usually at the front hair line, the nape of the neck and crown.
Traction alopecia in children can be treated in a similar fashion to the way it is treated in adults. In fact
children have a much better chance of regrowing hair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Getting into the habit of gently massaging the child s scalp will speed up their hair regrowth. It is best
to use a lubricating agent such as oil to eliminate any friction which may cause further damage to the
scalp or hair follicles. Bhringaraj oil or virgin coconut oil make excellent massage oils for the scalp
and can also double up as deep conditioning hair treatments.
Following these rules will ensure more hair doesn t fall out because of the excessive force applied to
the hair follicles and that further harm isn t caused to the follicles by the use of inappropriate hair
products. Stick with gentle products and stimulate hair growth by increasing scalp circulation through
regular massages to give the hair follicles a chance to heal themselves and start producing healthy new

The Causes Of The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis In the fall of 1962, the world sat on edge for thirteen days as the prospect of
a nuclear war between the United States and The Soviet Union became more and more legitimate. In
October of 1962, an American spy plane discovered nuclear missile launch sites being built by the
Soviet Union in Cuba, which rests only ninety miles south of Florida. The US went on to impose a
naval blockade of Cuba, making sure that no more nuclear weapons were imported into Havana
(Lebow 2000). President John F. Kennedy was tasked with the duty to remove the nuclear missiles
from Cuba while preventing a catastrophic and deadly nuclear war. Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of
the Soviet Union, longed to be seen as the powerful and authoritative figure that would be able bring
the Soviet Union to equal levels of political, military, and social prominence as the United States.
Ultimately, Khrushchev sought to maintain his political and military power and influence, and not
backing down from the all powerful United States and John F. Kennedy demonstrated to his
colleagues that he meant business. Similarly, President Kennedy was seeking re election in November
of 1962, only a month after the rising tensions. In order to be re elected, Kennedy recognized his need
to make up for the failures of the Bay of Pigs and the Vienna Summit and Kennedy became eager to
improve his current poor reputation and show the world, and more importantly US voters, his strong
willed resolve. (Lebow

Charles Bukowski s Ham On Rye
Adolf Hitler wasn t always accepted and was an outcast when he was younger, which made him want
control of the world. There are literatures where characters express this need. Charles Bukowski s
book Ham on Rye presents the need for acceptance and control through the life of Henry Chinaski.
Every one wants to feel accepted, but most importantly being accepted by their family. Henry
Chinaski isn t accepted by his family and lives a life full of neglect. Henry is constantly getting beat
from his father. The strop landed once again. Then it stopped. I stood and waited. I heard him hanging
up the strop. Next time he said, I don t want to find any hairs (70). Henry s father doesn t appreciate
all of Henry s hard work of cutting the grass. Henry was beat by his father because he missed a few
hairs of grass. Henry s father never appreciates anything that Henry does. He said that he was going to
kill you! He said that no son of his could write like that and live under the same roof with him! (246).
Henry s father doesn t even appreciate what Henry loves. Usually a father supports what their son
loves and helps them accomplish their dream. Father s are typically proud of their children especially
when they have talent like writing. Henry s father see s Henry s writing as a disgrace. The lack of
appreciation from his parents gives Henry the feeling of neglect. We feel the neglect from his parent s
when he mentions, he was a stranger. My mother was non existent. I was

Work Related Experience
Part A Work Related Experience
Work experience was conducted in a setting with wildlife and conservation. Lasting from the 30th
January to February 10th, where 65 hours was completed. Cornwall Nature Conservancy, a private
nature reserve dedicated to the conservation of endangered animals. Not open to the public, it
dedicates itself to educating people to be aware of why conservation is needed and gain trustees.
Duties/Roles
After shadowing keepers for the first two days, independent tasks were assigned and undertaken with
enthusiasm. Preparing food buckets for certain animals was given, these included Agoutis and
Coatimundis who had a diet of largely fruit with vegetables and for the Coatis, chicks three or four
times a week. Pigs had scraps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All contributing to the large amount of babies the reserve produces, including Mongoose, Agouti,
Jaguarundi, Puma, Serval and Lynx. While at the conservancy there was the possibility of a baby Lynx
as the larger female changed her behaviour dramatically and the behaviour of the other Lynx in the
enclosure also changed to correspond with this. The male became highly protective and was very
vocal and defensive. Although no baby appeared, it was interesting to discuss that with animals it can
be hard to determine when a birth will occur. When the Serval baby arrived, the female did not show
until the day before birthing. It was also noted that when the female pig was pregnant, she began to
show almost three weeks before she gave birth to the piglets. It was also learnt BIAZA does not count
a birth until the animal passes its first month.
Evaluation of the Organisation
The organisation started over 33 years ago, by Antony Blackler. When asked about his memories of
animals in early childhood, he recalled three memories. The first, when he was 18 months old looking
after a toad in the cellar of his childhood home. The second at 21 months old when he saw some
hounds and when he was 3 and a half years old seeing a fox on the day of his sister s birth which he

Regulating Interest Rates as a Solution to the Recession...
Today s financial crisis has deeply impacted all areas of life not only in the United States, but also the
rest of the world. Company giants such as Circuit City® and Merrill Lynch® have fallen victim to the
financial crisis. One of the biggest industries the financial crisis has had an impact on has been the
housing market. Everyday newspapers, journal articles, and television media cover stories regarding
foreclosures around the country. To regain financial control of the world and domestic economy, one
must begin with the housing market. There are various areas of the housing market, which allow for
overhaul and maintain a prosperous future. Regulating bank interest rates and federal interest rates

By repaying their debt, this helps the banking industry, which in turn strengthens the economy. This is
a win win situation because everyone benefits from it: the consumer improves his or her credit
worthiness in order to purchase a home at a later time, the banking industry does not lose out on
loaned money in either the short or long term, and home buyers will be able to enter an agreement
with the lender knowing beforehand that their interest rate will not rise at any point, thus making it
affordable. For people who are currently in an ARM, the banking industry should allow them to
transfer to a fixed rate loan that allows affordability to the consumer without jeopardizing loss of
money on the banking industry. The banking industry should also be flexible regarding requests by its
home owners. Some people are beginning to realize ahead of time that eventually they will not able to
afford the house they are living in. One solution might be to allow the flexibility such as lowering
payments for a specified amount of time such as one or two years. Affordability is the main idea to a
homeowner. If a mortgage is affordable, most likely a homeowner will continue to make his or her
payments on time and not foreclose on the home.
For example, if a person is paying $1,000 per month in mortgage and is not able to afford this amount,
by allowing them to reduce their payments to $800 on a two year agreement, the bank will temporarily

Abstract
The Jury Selection Process is a research paper that reviews the jury selection process in detail. First
we will review the stages of the criminal trail and go in depth with the jury selection process. The
paper will demonstrate why the jury selection process is necessary for the United States as well as its
patrons. The paper will also provide a break down of advantages and disadvantages on the jury
selection process. In addition to the information listed above, we will review some large profile court
cases and its jury selection process. This will determine just how detailed and challenging the process

In order to serve on this jury each of the potential juror had to fill out a number of different items.
First, each potential juror had to complete 79 page questionnaires that contained 294 questions (Ford
amp; Newton 1994). This questionnaire had questions pertaining the prosecution and the defense. In
addition, each candidate had to complete a one page hardship questionnaire (Ford amp; Newton
1994). Due to this difficult process the jury selection took two months to finish. By using this method
it ensured that OJ Simpson received a fair trial and know one would be biased to his situation. Another
example that we could review with a rigorous jury selection process would be the Michael Jackson
case in 2011. The defendant in the case was Dr. Conrad Murray. Dr. Murray was accused and
convicted for manslaughter because he gave Michael Jackson a powerful anesthetic and abandoned
him. The pool of perspective jurors started with 145 people (Duke, 2011). With the prosecution and
defense using their peremptory challenges, they narrow the juror list down to 84 potential jurors
(Duke, 2011). In order to further investigate, each candidate had to fill out a questionnaire that
contained 113 different questions (Duke, 2011). The prosecution and defense had a week in order to
review the questions from each juror. Each side was allowed twenty minutes in order to question each
potential juror and determine if they would be a good fit for this problematic case. By using this

At the end of world war ll the Jewish community and the the rest of the world were crying for justice

Browning believes that the anti Semitic propaganda started by the Nazi s in 1933 coerced the Germans
into killing the Jews. I agree with the fact that propaganda was used to spread the Nazi s message of
hate and may have caused some Germans to detest the Jews. But was it strong enough to have lead
them into a killing frenzy? I don t think that the propaganda was a cause for the killing of Jews.
Goldhagen believes that the German brutality was motivated primarily by racial, eliminationist anti
Semitism (Weinstein 2). So it s not that the Nazis brain washed thousands of Germans, but they just
added fuel to the hatred already present in the German society and gave them a way to justify their
actions.
People argue against Goldhagen s claim, that the German society was anti Semitic, by pointing out
that after World War II, the Germans no longer hated the Jews and made laws to protect them.
Goldhagen rebuts this argument by stating, Germans, after the war, were castigated by the world for
committing the greatest crime in history...The Allies denuded Germany s institutional structures,
replaced the dictatorship with democracy and revamped the education system (Weinstein 2). So after
the war, they realized their fallacies and had to change their views.
Browning claims that the Germans were blindly following orders. Thus the responsibility for the
crimes falls on those who gave the orders. This in and of

Brick Street Arts Bash Business Analysis
Despite the somewhat cold weather, downtown Marietta radiated a vibrant atmosphere on April 22 for
the inaugural Brick Street Arts Bash. In coordination with Marshall Kimball and the Marietta College
Music Department, along with the Leader in Residence program through the McDonough Center, the
People s Bank Theater contributed tremendously to the success of the festival; predominantly in terms
of publicizing to the community and offering a performance venue. Within this essay, I will discuss
how the People s Bank Theatre exhibited Drucker s idea of social responsibility, as described by
William Cohen, with specific regard to its involvement with the Brick Street Arts Bash.
To begin, the idea of this event spawned from the brain of the Music Department chair Marshall
Kimball in his proposal for the Leader in Residence program. Initially a small event for arts advocacy,
the bash blossomed into a community wide event with three stages of live entertainment, fantastic art
displays, and a number of children s activities all for free. As the event grew into its final product, the
People s Bank Theatre cooperated quite nicely with the music department to ensure success, whether it
be passing out flyers in the program for other shows or providing the performers a comfortable space

As defined by William Cohen, Drucker distinguished the four key themes of social responsibility as,
the inability of government to solve many social problems, the need for social responsibility to be
subordinate to the organization s mission, the opportunities for competitive advantage in social
responsibility, [and] the critical importance of leadership (Cohen 32). Each theme is present through
the People s Bank Theatre s involvement with this arts festival, however varying in

History of Green Tea in Japan
Introduction of Green Tea in Japan Originally, green tea came from China. China is the birth place of
green tea, to Japan in the 9th century. Nowadays, green tea has been extensively planted in Japan.
Green tea came from Japan by Japanese Buddhist monks who studied in from China. Japanese
Buddhist monks learned new cultures and knowledge that contributed to ancient Japanese society.
They learned about Chinese society and discovered green tea. So they bought it back to Japan. At the
time, green tea mainly drunk as medicine and was only available to the upper class such as monks and
aristocrats. In 1191, the famous Zen monk Eisai brought back tea seeds to Kyoto. Eisai started to

The leaves are then shipped to the factory for processing. Since not all can be processed at once, the
leaves are stored in a large bin that is kept at the proper temperature by blowing cool air into the
bottom. After the tea leaves are plucked, they must be dried to prevent fermentation, which stops any
enzyme activity that causes oxidation. Steaming is normally used in Japan. Before the steaming
process begins, the tea leaves are sorted and cleaned. The steaming time determines the type of tea
that is produced. Sencha tea is normally steamed for 30 90 seconds. Another type of sencha called
fukamushi is steamed for 90 150 seconds to produce a flaky light yellowish green tea. Steaming is
conducted in a bamboo tray over water or by a revolving or belt conveyor type machine. After
mechanical steaming, the leaves go into a cooling machine that blows the water from the leaves. After
drying, a number of rolling and drying steps take place. A special machine is used to accomplish the
first rolling and drying steps simultaneously and takes about 48 minutes. The tea leaves are dried to
improve their strength so they can be pressed during the next drying process. Moisture from both the
surface and from the inside of the tea leaves is removed using this machine. This machine consists of a
spindle with finger shaped extensions that stir the leaves while heated air (at 93.2 96.8° F [34 36° C])
is blown into the machine. Though the rolling temperature

Detroit, Michigan grew up around the automobile industry. At its peak, Detroit was the fifth largest

Design And Design Of Design Essay
Design and build is a generic term describing a procurement route in which the main contractor is
appointed to design and construct the works, as opposed to a traditional contract, where theclient
appoints consultants to design the development and then a contractor is appointed to construct the
works. Design and build can appeal to clients as it gives a single point of responsibility for delivering
the entire project. Some clients however consider it is only appropriate for simple projects,
wheredesign quality is not the main consideration. The contractor can either be appointed to carry out
all of the design work, or if the client wishes to have greater influence over the design, a concept
design and outline (or performance)specification can be prepared by a consultants employed by the
client, and then the contractor is appointed to complete the design and carry out the construction. The
contractor may use their own in house designers to design the building, or they can appoint consultant
designers, or the client s designers can be employed by the contractor to complete the design (either
by novation or consultant switch). If the contractor is appointed at the outset of the project (so that
they can contribute to the development of the design from the beginning), they may be appointed
through a two stage process. In the first stage, the contractor is selected on the basis of a fee,
preliminaries, overheads and profit. They then work with the design team (who may be

Comparing Confucianism and Islam
Although Islam and Confucianism represent two totally different worldviews, they have similar
characteristics, which provide a potential idea, that both can be from a common source. Mirza Tahir
Ahmad, who was a Caliph in Ahmadiyya Muslim community, supported this idea in his book
Revelation, Nationality, Knowledge Truth . He supports his idea saying, All humans are God s
creation; it stands to reason that God not only guided people in the Middle East through Abrahamic

Confucianism is one of the main influential ideologies on the Chinese culture. The founder of this
religion is Confucius; he was a Chinese teacher. He taught traditional disciplines at that time, and

Argument Essay
Collin Brozek Scott Harber Comp. I April 14th, 2013 Argument Essay There are a plethora of reasons
why pop and soft drinks are bad for personal health as well as the environment. Never the less there
have been an increase of obesity cases and children with diabetes caused solely by the consumption of
sugar filled beverages. The consumption of soft drinks and other carbonated beverages have multiple
negative effects, and I want to briefly cover ten or so reason as to why soda is hazardous to our bodies
as well as some negative effects that drinking soda on a daily basis has on the body. To begin, soft
drinks are nothing but flavored sugar water, which is completely unhealthy for the body; the constant
consumption of sodas can lead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rats that were exposed and given more or excessive amounts of phosphates died on average five
weeks before the rats that have normal levels. This is quite frightening because canning plants and
manufactures over time have increased the amount of acids they put in their sodas. (FASEB 1) One a
side note, but still a concern to our environment is artificial sweeteners. So far scientist aren t sure
whether they are harmful to humans and our bodies, but what they do know is, is that the sweeteners
used in diet sodas cannot breakdown in our bodies. Scientist in Switzerland around 2009 tested water
treatment plants around the country and discovered that there were trace amounts of acesulfame K,
sucralose, as well as saccharin which are all used in the sweetening of diet sodas. While not
completely harmful, yet, to humans it still shows signs of interface with animals that live near lakes

Human beings, desire to maintain a connection with the past is achieved through the languages

The federal government s intentions are pure with the passing of NAGPRA. However, NAGPRA has a
considerable number of debatable implications regarding Native Americans. To fall under NAGPRA s
jurisdiction, a tribe is required to have federal recognition. Federal recognition requires a cultural
group, such as Native Americans, to abide by federal standards. Non compliance is an issue prevalent
today regarding institutions and companies; the lack of compliance is rooted in the absence of strong
restrictions and penalties for institutions and companies. International politics inhibit the act of global
reparation. International representatives and museum officials leading repatriation processes, results in
a more efficient way of returning artifacts to the rightful owner without political restrictions. All in all,
the Native American Graves Protection Act made significant important changes over the years,
however, with ever advancing United States and American Indian Tribes the outdated act is in need of

Three Musketeers Thesis
One for all, and all for one! The most famous and noticeable line in the Three Musketeers folklore
legacy whether it be from the films to the original book by Alexandre Dumas. Although this famous
line has been used throughout many reworks and adaptations of the three musketeers, many films have
not followed in the footsteps of the original book and have changed things to best appeal to the
audience. Most noticeably we see this in the 1993 Musketeer movie directed by Stephen Herek that
proclaimed that the main character D Artagnan, father was killed to set a tense mood. However with
that being said, there are also many things that reflect the time in which the book was written and also
the social and political hierarchy and structure of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As previously mentioned, the hierarchy of which the French population was separated was from that
of religious figures being the highest to common folk were placed at the rock bottom of the pyramid.
In the film this can be interpreted by the open fields and the villages in which people were trading
their crops for money or buying them among themself to live off of. France just like any other place
during this time in Europe and also worldwide was mostly agricultural as the first industrial revolution
started in the 1700 s by that of England first. With that being said the implementation of showing the
countryside and the social interactions between D artagnan and the locals was another way that
Stephen Herek subtly shown how France was during this time.
Ironically the whole plot of the Three Musketeers is a socio political statement in itself. If not
understood by reading the book by Alexandre Dumas and watching the films, the main plot is that
Cardinal Richelieu plots against the king of France, Louis XIII. In particular this film puts it in which
Cardinal Richelieu plots to form an alliance with England as France is about to go to war. For the

Ragtime Research Paper
Ragtime
American culture involves myriads of customs and traditions inherent exclusively to the USA. Except
for religion, clothes, behavior, beliefs, or food, which define culture as a unique phenomenon, music
enormously contributes to its existence in any period of the nation s development. Early American
music is famous for a distinctive genre popular during the mid 1890s, called ragtime, notable for its
special syncopation and composers.
Ragtime used to be a solely American style of musical works composed of three or four strikingly
different sections, in other words, strains, one of which was 16 or 32 measures in length. Due to an
astonishing syncopation, namely replacement of the beat from its regular course of meter, ragtime
compositions became both threatening and thrilling to the American youngsters. The displaced beat
caused the listeners to feel hyperactive as well as evoked strong associations with so called low class
music of the Negroes ( History of ragtime, n.d.).
Although ragtime was composed for a piano, modern chronicles mention a significant role of the
banjo in the development of this musical genre. In 1881, a writer Lafcadio Hearn noted that the blacks
used the piano as a banjo, producing new ragged rhythms, later called banjo figuration ( History of
ragtime, n.d.). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

manager of the country estate of the Puritan Earl of Lincoln. Anna Bradstreet got married at the age of
16 to the young Simon Bradstreet who was working with Anna father. Anna Bradstreet never went to
school but her father always taught her and gave her an education. It that time many women didn t
have an education. Anna considers one of the best and most important American poets. When
Bradstreet was a little girl, she writes poems to honor and please her father. After she got married, she
kept writing and it marriage didn t stop her. Her brother in law, John Woodbridge, pastor of the

always wrote about her faith in her poetry. She always talked about the Puritan and their believes and

through her sicknesses. The Puritans believed suffering was God s plan of preparing the soul and heart

Bernini Vs Michelangelo Essay
Art has always played an enormous role in history. Historical art has frozen in time events and ways of
life in different time periods so that we may learn and understand how our history has evolved over
hundreds of years. Two well known historical art periods are the Baroque and Surrealist, which
contrast each other significantly in style and are from two different time periods. One such piece of art
from the Baroque time period was the sculpture of David. This sculpture was actually created by two
different artists. Gianlorezo Bernini and Michelangelo s versions of the sculpture of David are very
different in comparison. In Chapter 10, Sayre suggests, Bernini s sculpture of David commissioned by
a nephew of Pope Paul V, appears to be an intentional contrast to Michelangelo s sculpture of the same
subject (Sayre 310). There are many contrasts to the two sculptures portraying the same event. ...

Dr. Josef Mengele s Cruel Experiments
During the Holocaust, Dr. Mengele was the symbol of Nazi cruelty and mysticism due to his tortuous

Mengele s experimental interests began when he became anxious to make a name for himself; he

The Themes in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown Essay
The Themes in Young Goodman Brown
In Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown the reader finds several themes. These will be
discussed in this essay.
Morse Peckham in The Development of Hawthorne s Romanticism explains what he interprets
Hawthorne s main theme to be:
Once the self has been redeemed from society it can be explored in its own terms, and for this purpose
Hawthorne developed his peculiar use of emblematic allegory. . . . This technique, though Hawthorne
s is different from that of European writers, creates analogies between self and not self, between
personality and the worlds. . . .Henceforth Hawthorne s theme is the redemption of the self through the

The humor in Young Goodman Brown is not so apparent to this reader as is the love; I refer to the
deep love which Goodman has for his wife, Faith. When he says goodbye and starts down the street,
headed for the forest, the protagonist really feels a deep consideration for Faith s feelings:
Poor little Faith! thought he, for his heart smote him. What a wretch am I, to leave her on such an
errand! She talks of dreams, too. Methought, as she spoke, there was trouble in her face, as if a dream
had warned her what work is to be done tonight. But, no, no! twould kill her to think it. Well; she s a
blessed angel on earth; and after this one night, I ll cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven.
This love of Brown s continues throughout the tale. Enroute along the path with the sinister fellow
traveler, Goodman repeatedly recalls his feelings for his wife:
Well, then, to end the matter at once, said Goodman Brown, considerably nettled, there is my wife,
Faith. It would break her dear little heart; and I d rather break my own!
Friend, said he, stubbornly, my mind is made up. Not another step will I budge on this errand. What if
a wretched old woman do choose to go to the devil, when I thought she was going to Heaven! Is that
any reason why I should quit my dear
Faith, and go after her?
Faith! shouted Goodman Brown, in a voice of agony and desperation; and the echoes of the

Also, the author based the legend in the story off of a real sailor s tale. As previously stated, the legend
this uses features the ghost ship The Flying Dutchman, a name that people have used over and over
again. Although Jacques changed parts of the legend a bit to fit the series, it introduces the reader to a
whole new world of stories. Adapting a legend adds a whole new depth to the story, as it makes the
narrative so appealing. Personally, I had never heard of this legend before, but the first novel actually
made me want to learn more about that time period and the legends mariners would tell of the
mysteries of the sea. Known for his skill in writing the Redwall books, Brian Jacques carried this style
over into the Castaways series. He uses vivid figurative language, exquisite vocabulary, exceptional
dialogue techniques, and creates memorable characters all throughout the whole series. In The Angel s
Command, the very first sentence of the book reads, Great and golden, like an enormous, newly
minted doubloon, the Caribbean sun presided over the waterfront. From merely the first sentence, the
reader can see how amazing Jacques writes, using similes and excellent vocabulary. Yet he doesn t
write with words that no one can even read, let alone understand. Jacques does a fine job writing with
words that are the slightest bit complex that it increases the reader s vocabulary, yet they know what

Juvenile Homicide Can Be Prevented Essay
Introduction For every 12 homicides committed in the United States 1 of them involves a juvenile
offender (Howard N. Snyder, Juvenile Offenders and Victims, 2006). Although most American don t
realize it, juvenile homicide is a problem in the United States that needs to be fixed. Even though
statistics show that the homicide rate done by juveniles is at its lowest rate since the early 1980 s it is
still a problem. Juvenile homicide has lowered in the recent years, but the fact that it still happens is

In the recent years many criminologists have used three different demographics used to describe
juvenile homicide offenders. Those are: juvenile gang members, between 15 17 years in age, and
mostly males (Directorate, 2002).
They are often gang members; when gangs recruit members to join their gang they will often target
the young, because they can mold them to believe that the gang is the main thing in their life. If they
get in the gang they are more likely to begin to carry guns, and deal drugs compared to juveniles who
are not gang members. In data gathered from interviews of arrested juveniles in the Drug Use
Forecasting (DUF) study, The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention states that
juvenile gang members are reasonably more likely to carry a gun on a day to day basis compared to
the juveniles which are not involved in gangs (31% percent compared to 20%) (James C. Howell,
1999). With saying that, James C. Howell, and Scott R. Decker found that the juvenile homicide
problem in St. Louis was mainly largely a gun homicide problem (James C. Howell, 1999).
The average age of a juvenile homicide offender is in their upper teens. According to The Office of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention from 2006 and 2008, 90% of the juvenile homicide
offenders were 15 17 years old, compared to only 10% were 6 14 years old. High School

Gene Therapy is Revolutionizing Medicine
We used to think that our fate was in our stars, but now we know that, in large measure, our fate is in
our genes, quotes James Watson. This fate that Watson is talking about is contained in our genes, and
deals with a new technique, gene therapy. Gene therapy is revolutionizing the world of medicine.
Many physicians are predicting that in twenty years gene therapy may change the practice of medicine
from a treatment based to a prevention based practice. Our future is l ocked away inside of our genes.

aims to correct the mutated part of the cell or its progeny. Skin cells work in a different manner.
Geneticists found that these cells synthesize and secrete proteins, but these are then transported
through the blood to be utilized by other cells. Researchers are trying to use skin cells to synthesize an
enzyme that it does not normally make. They then hope that it will take that enzyme to some other

that will help that new cell function properly. Research with liver cells is still in the beginning stages.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the following question; What have we learned about
the mining for copper that could minimise environment impacts of mining in the future? Copper is a
metal used for jewellery, copper wiring, electrical motors, engines, but mainly used in electrical
generators and powers. This is because copper has a high thermal and electrical conductivity. Hence,
copper is essential in today s society. The mining for copper in Queenstown, Tasmania was founded in
1883, but first started in 1896.
Copper mining led to the formation of acid rain because Acid mine drainage (AMG) was formed into
the river system by natural processes when the pyrite bedrock was exposed to oxygen and water. This
is because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A scrubber is used to remove gases and destroys the harmful chemicals in the atmosphere, which
prevents the formation of acid rain. Additionally, FDG works by spraying a wet slurry of limestone
into a huge chambers where the calcium in the limestone responds with the sulfur dioxide in the flue
gas. When sulfur produces 〖SO〗_2, the fumes gas goes through the scrubber where a spray mixture
of limestone and water reacts with the 〖SO〗_2. It produces calcium sulfate (when 〖SO〗_2
consolidates with limestone), known as synthetic gypsum. Scrubbers reduce the health risks of the
local residents and workers. It is extremely important to remove sulfur dioxide because it combines
with water in the air to form sulfuric acid (acidic compound) when released into the atmosphere. Thus,
scrubbers are utilized to remove acidic gases as it filters out the sulfur dioxide leaving water released

NFL Team Case Study
Week 2 of the NFL preseason begins tomorrow with a matchup between two NFC teams that seem to
be headed in opposite directions. The Detroit Lions meet the Washington Redskins Thursday at
FedExField, and both teams will look to continue to set the tone for a successful 2015 16 season. The
Lions are coming off a controversial playoff loss to the Dallas Cowboys during Wild Card Weekend
last season. Meanwhile, the Redskins won just four games a season ago, and the franchise still doesn t
know if its starting quarterback is the guy to lead it this season and beyond. Including the Lions and
Redskins, below is a preview of the NFC with predictions for the upcoming season. NFC East Dallas
Cowboys Last season, the Dallas Cowboys reached the playoffs for the first time since 2009. While
Tony Romo probably had his best season as an NFL quarterback in 2014, the 35 year old veteran
benefitted from a lethal running attack. Former Cowboy and current Philadelphia Eagle DeMarco
Murray led the NFL in rushing a season ago with 1,845 yards, nearly 500 rushing yards more than the
next closest running back. While Murray flew the coop for Philadelphia, Dallas still has the best
offensive line in the NFL, a solid group of receivers, including All Pro Dez Bryant and several
standout players returning on defense. Dallas might not be as efficient ... Show more content on

While Kelly is the most unconventional head coach in the NFL, it s hard to question a man that has
produced 10 6 records in each of his first two seasons as Eagles head coach. The Eagles finished ninth
in rushing yards last season, and the additions of DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews should only
improve that ranking this season. It s difficult to predict how Philadelphia will fare this season, but it
should be fun to watch, especially if everyone s favorite polarizer makes the final roster Tim

The Importance Of Agriculture In Iowa
Before the European settlement of Iowa, the state was a land covered in tall prairie grasses, wetlands,
and small forests. The Native Americans thrived on these lands by using pockets of the fertile soil for
agriculture and hunting the abundance of wildlife that roamed these plains. By the late 1800s however,
the prairie had become farmland and the Europeans had begun their new lives along Iowa s waterways
and railroads. Within a century Iowa s landscape had changed rapidly due to human activity. As
settlers began to enter Iowa they would encounter woodland areas in the extreme southeastern corner
of the state, and then move on the grasslands that covered most of the state. Iowa served as a transition
zone from the wooded East Coast to the Great Plains of the west. In Central Iowa the grass the prairie
grass would measure from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every year the Wildlife Bureau of the DNR purchases land for public use and wildlife habitats. The
restoration of Iowa s prairie land is considered important because it can restore the natural ecosystem,
benefit water quality, and reduces soil erosion caused by runoff. Other farming practices such as
having buffer strips near streams and cover crops have helped manage the soil erosion in Iowa, but
since 1850 we have lost nearly 14 inches in topsoil depth and growing. Iowa has changed rapidly from
the vast prairie lands it used to be, but many of these lands are being slowly reclaimed and restored to
their once natural splendor. The most rapid change in Iowa s landscape occurred during the Industrial
Revolution, and when large scale farming became a possibility. This has left serious consequences on
Iowa s landscape with erosion, but is being combatted by more productive farming practices. Iowa as
the middle lands is continuously changing, for the better or the worse, alongside the people who call it

History And Historical Context Of The Old Testament
The history of how the Bible came into existence has been explored for centuries and is an active area
of study today. There are many facets to the Bible and each has its own set of unique characteristics
and teachings. The Old Testament is considered a contemporary guide for daily living, even though it
was composed hundreds of years ago. Where did the Old Testament come from? What are some of the
influences that shaped the Old Testament? What are the significant events of the Old Testament? In
order to gain a better understanding of the Old Testament and its message to Christians, special
consideration is given to its historical and cultural context, and to the major milestones in its
development. Personal application of the teachings offered in this section of the Bible should be the
aspiration of all Christians today.
Cultural and Historical Context of the Old Testament An understanding of Israel s history and
geography is necessary for proper interpretation of the Old Testament. The Middle East provided the
setting for the events recorded in the Old Testament, specifically Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Syria
Palestine. This area lies along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Mesopotamia up to the Persian Gulf.
This area was the cradle of civilization and the scene of God s activities as recorded in the Old
Testament. The majority of the events take place in Palestine, the ancient land of Canaan, though at
times the Israelites lived in Egypt and Babylon. This is

Sunshine And Light In The Scarlett Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The Scarlett Letter is a satire based around a Puritan culture published in
the 1850 s. The novel is based around Hester Prynne, who commits adultery against her husband
Roger Chillingworth. Hester s sin causes her daughter Pearl and her to be treated wrongly by the
Puritans. The Puritans are ruthless and harsh towards sinners such as Hester Prynne, unlike the natural
world which is merciful and kind. The novel tells a story of characters trying to find their way into the
sympathetic light or lose their way into the deep despair of darkness. Hawthorne uses sunshine or light
as an element of forgiveness and innocence, while using the darkness to symbolize the evil. The
contradiction between the light and darkness can be depicted between Pearl who is favored by the
sunshine, Hester who is later favored, and Chillingworth who is enveloped by the evil darkness.
Hawthorne s use of sunshine to favor Pearl presents the understanding that Pearl is innocent and pure.
Pearl was brought into the world out of sin and the Puritans view her as a child from the devil. The use
of sunshine and light to Pearl s favor contradicts these assumptions made by the judgmental Puritans.
Supported in the text by Hester telling Pearl to acquire her own sunshine, No my little Pearl! Said her
mother. Thou must gather thine own sunshine. I have none to give thee! (Hawthorne 96) The text from
the novel supports Hawthorne s use of sunshine to favor Pearl because her mother

the roman empire is the greatest civilization of all time
The Roman Empire was the period of time after the Roman Republic and before the Byzantine Empire
from 29 B.C. to A.D. 476. It was the highest point of Roman civilization, greater than any prior
empires and towers over even the empires after it; it triumphed over the world .
The Roman Republic was what built up the foundation for the Roman Empire. During the Republic, a
small group of people started from scratch and developed their own systems, which later develops into
the Roman Empire. The strong leaders of the Republic had conquered much land and people for
Rome. The Roman Republic thus ignites Roman civilization, which leads on to the second step the
Roman Empire.
The Roman Empire started off with leader Augustus, who was left ... Show more content on

Because Augustus encouraged trade, many roads and highways were built for convenient traveling.
Trading made easier increased trade, which boosted Roman economy even more.
The Greek Empire occurred before the Romans and when compared to the Roman Empire, seems to
be modest, not as great. The Greeks did not have as much conquered lands, which lessens their power.
What they did have conquered was divided into parts amongst different rulers, who were constantly at
war with each other, lacking the peace that Pax Romana had. The conquered Greek lands did not have
a chance to civilize as one great empire as the Romans had.
The Byzantine Empire followed the Roman Empire, and it, also, seems meager in comparison. It had
evolved from the Roman Empire, and because it was in the late stage that it was in, land had been lost,
so in terms of size, the Roman Empire was superior to the Byzantine. The empire wasn t strong, either.
At the start, the first ruler, Justinian, attempted to reconquer Roman lands, but in doing so, left his own
land in ruins, and his conquests were lost right after his death. The Empire faced many enemies and
was threatened constantly by them. Eventually, all land was lost except for the Constantinople, the
rich and powerful capital city, and the land surrounding it.
As can be seen, the Roman Empire was great for its time in more ways that one, with its undefeatable
strength and size . It was greater than the empires before it

Migrant Workers In The 1930s And Today
People work very hard to provide the fresh produce that can be so easily purchased at the grocery
store. This is explained in the articles: The Migrant Experience by Robin A. Fanslow and Young
Migrant Workers Toil in U.S. Fields by Karen Fanning. In the 1930s, migrant workers had to go
through some pretty rough times in order to support themselves. Today, migrant workers work
extremely hard to support their families while, at the same time, sending their kids to school.
However, the world in the 1930s was very different than it is today. This makes for some variation
when it comes to what challenges they have had to face. Regardless of these differences, migrant
workers in the 1930s and today have faced similar and different forms of ... Show more content on

In the 1930s and today, migrant workers struggled and struggle to find financial stability. In the 1930s,
the crash of the stock market which lead to the Great Depression left people with practically nothing.
This caused them to become migrants. They would travel all over California following the work. In
the same way, migrant workers today struggle to find the money that they need while still allowing
their children to get an education, so just like in the 1930s, they travel from state to state looking for
work. Another similarity between the two times is the fact that in both cases there it a glimmer of
hope. In the 1930s, after working so hard for years, the economy improved and the workers were able
to settle down and have a better life. Today, programs like MET help the children of migrant worker
families make it through school. If these kids make it all the way through, they will most likely be able
to end the cycle. In contrast to these similarities, there are also some pretty big differences. In the
1930s, migrant workers didn t have to worry about having to juggle working in the fields with school.
Having an education then wasn t as big of a deal as it is now. Today, if workers don t get an education
they will most likely be working in the fields for rest of their lives. Another difference is that today
people don t have to deal with the Dust Bowl. In the 1930s, people lost their homes after they were
covered up with dirt. Today, some of the only that could potentially destroy a home are fires or floods,
but today we have firefighters and insurance. Migrant workers from these two times share some big
similarities, but also have their

Thomas Kuhn Argues That Normal Science Inevitably Runs...
B) Short Answer Questions: Answer two of the following questions (no more than one page each) (20
points each: 40pts)
2. In The Structure of Scientific Revolutions Thomas Kuhn argues that normal science inevitably runs
into a crisis. Why is it necessarily the case? Is there a way to avoid scientific crises? In Thomas Kuhn
s paradigm cycle, normal science inevitably leads to an anomaly, which eventually leads into a crisis.
If the current existing theory in the paradigm fails to solve the puzzles of normal science, it will
eventually call for a new theory to take its place. Kuhn further expresses that, although, normal
science holds the objective of creating boundaries and structure in the scientific community, and thus,
suppressing ideas and findings outside of this structure, normal science is also a driving force of the
creation of anomalies and an eventual paradigm shift. Scientists ultimate goal is to unravel the truth of
the universe. Normal science and the existing paradigm are successful, in the beginning, in aiding and
justifying scientific findings of that time. However, as experiments and research methods progress and
advance with time, the polished version of the theories and concepts may start to conflict with the
initial paradigm. It is the success of normal science, which is inevitable through time, that leads to an,
thus, inevitable crisis. The increasing precision and improvement of understanding the paradigm,
makes the paradigm an easier target to find

The Religion And Its Origins
This chapter was exactly like Vavova s chapter as it was defending morals from debunkers. The author
merely formed a defense for keeping his religious beliefs.
The author had four parts of his argument. He introduces the arguments and claims that he can defend
religion. In the introduction, the author puts out a hypothetical situation where a person, Fred, believes
in evolution and God. Fred can see that evolution does not include whether not God is involved. The
author claims that this is similar to a debunking argument, but he can defend a religious belief. The
author then goes over the structure of his argument and requests patience from the reader on the
matter.
In the second part of his argument, the author explains religion and its origins. According to
psychologists, folk theories are universal processes of human thought and we have found a lot of
them. However the fact that we have folk theories does not explain why we have them. Debunking
does not argue about whether cognitive evolution is true, it argues around the implications if it were
true. Belief forming processes must be truth tracking. However, does that meant that evolution forces
us into skepticism? The author doesn t believe so, because of the possibility of a Milvian Bridge.
Natural selection would help if it selected for the truth. Targets of beliefs should be causes of beliefs,
making them remote and proximate. This is his detailed account of a Milvian Bridge. The author then
goes on to define reason

  • 2. Captain James Cook Essay Captain James Cook was an English seaman who lived in the eighteenth century. He was one of the world s greatest explorers. Between 1768 and l779, he made three great voyages of exploration to the Pacific Ocean. The purpose of these voyages was to get information about lands already known and to discover new lands. Captain Cook s first voyage began in August of 1768. On this voyage, he had only one ship with a crew of 94 seamen. He sailed south from England across the Atlantic Ocean and around the tip of South America. Then, he sailed west into the Pacific Ocean. Eventually, he discovered the large islands of New Zealand and drew maps of their coasts. Then, he continued west until he came to the east coast of Australia. He found this coast to be fertile, a fact which was not known in Europe at that time. He returned to England in July of 1771. In the next year, Captain Cook began his second voyage of exploration. On this voyage, he had two ships and about 200 seamen. The purpose of this voyage was to try to discover if there was a continent other than Australia in the South pacific. Re sailed from England in July of 1772. When he reached the South Pacific, he turned directly south into the cold Antarctic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, he experimented with all of them, but he preferred to play wind instruments such as the trumpet and the trombone. Dizzy always had strong lungs, so it was easy for him to play wind instruments. In a short time, Dizzy became very good at playing both the trumpet and the trombone. He never had a teacher or an actual lesson. By the time he was 13 years old, Dizzy became so good at the trumpet that he received a free scholarship to study at a big music ... • 3. Traction Alopecia In Children Children are just as susceptible to traction alopecia as adults are. The causes of traction alopecia in children are similar to grown ups. Hairstyles such as pigtails, cornrows and braiding the hair can cause hair loss in kids. When a child s hair is repeatedly styled tightly, over a period of time hair follicles become damaged and incapable of producing healthy hairs. The hair follicle may become so damaged that it stops producing hairs altogether. Hair loss occurs in the areas of the scalp that are pulled the most, usually at the front hair line, the nape of the neck and crown. Traction alopecia in children can be treated in a similar fashion to the way it is treated in adults. In fact children have a much better chance of regrowing hair ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Getting into the habit of gently massaging the child s scalp will speed up their hair regrowth. It is best to use a lubricating agent such as oil to eliminate any friction which may cause further damage to the scalp or hair follicles. Bhringaraj oil or virgin coconut oil make excellent massage oils for the scalp and can also double up as deep conditioning hair treatments. Following these rules will ensure more hair doesn t fall out because of the excessive force applied to the hair follicles and that further harm isn t caused to the follicles by the use of inappropriate hair products. Stick with gentle products and stimulate hair growth by increasing scalp circulation through regular massages to give the hair follicles a chance to heal themselves and start producing healthy new ... • 4. The Causes Of The Cuban Missile Crisis The Cuban Missile Crisis In the fall of 1962, the world sat on edge for thirteen days as the prospect of a nuclear war between the United States and The Soviet Union became more and more legitimate. In October of 1962, an American spy plane discovered nuclear missile launch sites being built by the Soviet Union in Cuba, which rests only ninety miles south of Florida. The US went on to impose a naval blockade of Cuba, making sure that no more nuclear weapons were imported into Havana (Lebow 2000). President John F. Kennedy was tasked with the duty to remove the nuclear missiles from Cuba while preventing a catastrophic and deadly nuclear war. Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of the Soviet Union, longed to be seen as the powerful and authoritative figure that would be able bring the Soviet Union to equal levels of political, military, and social prominence as the United States. Ultimately, Khrushchev sought to maintain his political and military power and influence, and not backing down from the all powerful United States and John F. Kennedy demonstrated to his colleagues that he meant business. Similarly, President Kennedy was seeking re election in November of 1962, only a month after the rising tensions. In order to be re elected, Kennedy recognized his need to make up for the failures of the Bay of Pigs and the Vienna Summit and Kennedy became eager to improve his current poor reputation and show the world, and more importantly US voters, his strong willed resolve. • 5. Charles Bukowski s Ham On Rye Adolf Hitler wasn t always accepted and was an outcast when he was younger, which made him want control of the world. There are literatures where characters express this need. Charles Bukowski s book Ham on Rye presents the need for acceptance and control through the life of Henry Chinaski. Every one wants to feel accepted, but most importantly being accepted by their family. Henry Chinaski isn t accepted by his family and lives a life full of neglect. Henry is constantly getting beat from his father. The strop landed once again. Then it stopped. I stood and waited. I heard him hanging up the strop. Next time he said, I don t want to find any hairs (70). Henry s father doesn t appreciate all of Henry s hard work of cutting the grass. Henry was beat by his father because he missed a few hairs of grass. Henry s father never appreciates anything that Henry does. He said that he was going to kill you! He said that no son of his could write like that and live under the same roof with him! (246). Henry s father doesn t even appreciate what Henry loves. Usually a father supports what their son loves and helps them accomplish their dream. Father s are typically proud of their children especially when they have talent like writing. Henry s father see s Henry s writing as a disgrace. The lack of appreciation from his parents gives Henry the feeling of neglect. While at the conservancy there was the possibility of a baby Lynx as the larger female changed her behaviour dramatically and the behaviour of the other Lynx in the enclosure also changed to correspond with this. The male became highly protective and was very vocal and defensive. Although no baby appeared, it was interesting to discuss that with animals it can be hard to determine when a birth will occur. When the Serval baby arrived, the female did not show until the day before birthing. It was also noted that when the female pig was pregnant, she began to show almost three weeks before she gave birth to the piglets. It was also learnt BIAZA does not count a birth until the animal passes its first month. Evaluation of the Organisation The organisation started over 33 years ago, by Antony Blackler. When asked about his memories of animals in early childhood, he recalled three memories. The first, when he was 18 months old looking after a toad in the cellar of his childhood home. Company giants such as Circuit City® and Merrill Lynch® have fallen victim to the financial crisis. One of the biggest industries the financial crisis has had an impact on has been the housing market. Everyday newspapers, journal articles, and television media cover stories regarding foreclosures around the country. To regain financial control of the world and domestic economy, one must begin with the housing market. There are various areas of the housing market, which allow for overhaul and maintain a prosperous future. By repaying their debt, this helps the banking industry, which in turn strengthens the economy. This is a win win situation because everyone benefits from it: the consumer improves his or her credit worthiness in order to purchase a home at a later time, the banking industry does not lose out on loaned money in either the short or long term, and home buyers will be able to enter an agreement with the lender knowing beforehand that their interest rate will not rise at any point, thus making it affordable. For people who are currently in an ARM, the banking industry should allow them to transfer to a fixed rate loan that allows affordability to the consumer without jeopardizing loss of money on the banking industry. The banking industry should also be flexible regarding requests by its home owners. Some people are beginning to realize ahead of time that eventually they will not able to afford the house they are living in. One solution might be to allow the flexibility such as lowering payments for a specified amount of time such as one or two years. Affordability is the main idea to a homeowner. If a mortgage is affordable, most likely a homeowner will continue to make his or her payments on time and not foreclose on the home. For example, if a person is paying $1,000 per month in mortgage and is not able to afford this amount, by allowing them to reduce their payments to $800 on a two year agreement, the bank will temporarily lose ... Jury Process The Jury Selection Process Taurean F Dawkins Strayer University Huntsville, AL February 10, 2013 Abstract The Jury Selection Process is a research paper that reviews the jury selection process in detail. First we will review the stages of the criminal trail and go in depth with the jury selection process. The paper will demonstrate why the jury selection process is necessary for the United States as well as its patrons. The paper will also provide a break down of advantages and disadvantages on the jury selection process. In addition to the information listed above, we will review some large profile court cases and its jury selection process. This will determine just how detailed and challenging the process can prove to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to serve on this jury each of the potential juror had to fill out a number of different items. First, each potential juror had to complete 79 page questionnaires that contained 294 questions (Ford amp; Newton 1994). This questionnaire had questions pertaining the prosecution and the defense. In addition, each candidate had to complete a one page hardship questionnaire (Ford amp; Newton 1994). Due to this difficult process the jury selection took two months to finish. By using this method it ensured that OJ Simpson received a fair trial and know one would be biased to his situation. Another example that we could review with a rigorous jury selection process would be the Michael Jackson case in 2011. The defendant in the case was Dr. Conrad Murray. Dr. Murray was accused and convicted for manslaughter because he gave Michael Jackson a powerful anesthetic and abandoned him. The pool of perspective jurors started with 145 people (Duke, 2011). With the prosecution and defense using their peremptory challenges, they narrow the juror list down to 84 potential jurors (Duke, 2011). In order to further investigate, each candidate had to fill out a questionnaire that contained 113 different questions (Duke, 2011). The prosecution and defense had a week in order to review the questions from each juror. Each side was allowed twenty minutes in order to question each potential juror and determine if they would be a good fit for this problematic case. By using this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These books deal with the question of whether or not the average German soldiers and civilians were responsible for the holocaust. My research paper argues in favor of Goldhagen s book, the average German was responsible for the participation of he holocaust. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Browning believes that the anti Semitic propaganda started by the Nazi s in 1933 coerced the Germans into killing the Jews. I agree with the fact that propaganda was used to spread the Nazi s message of hate and may have caused some Germans to detest the Jews. But was it strong enough to have lead them into a killing frenzy? I don t think that the propaganda was a cause for the killing of Jews. Goldhagen believes that the German brutality was motivated primarily by racial, eliminationist anti Semitism (Weinstein 2). So it s not that the Nazis brain washed thousands of Germans, but they just added fuel to the hatred already present in the German society and gave them a way to justify their actions. People argue against Goldhagen s claim, that the German society was anti Semitic, by pointing out that after World War II, the Germans no longer hated the Jews and made laws to protect them. Goldhagen rebuts this argument by stating, Germans, after the war, were castigated by the world for committing the greatest crime in history...The Allies denuded Germany s institutional structures, replaced the dictatorship with democracy and revamped the education system (Weinstein 2). So after the war, they realized their fallacies and had to change their views. Browning claims that the Germans were blindly following orders. • 10. Brick Street Arts Bash Business Analysis Despite the somewhat cold weather, downtown Marietta radiated a vibrant atmosphere on April 22 for the inaugural Brick Street Arts Bash. In coordination with Marshall Kimball and the Marietta College Music Department, along with the Leader in Residence program through the McDonough Center, the People s Bank Theater contributed tremendously to the success of the festival; predominantly in terms of publicizing to the community and offering a performance venue. Within this essay, I will discuss how the People s Bank Theatre exhibited Drucker s idea of social responsibility, as described by William Cohen, with specific regard to its involvement with the Brick Street Arts Bash. To begin, the idea of this event spawned from the brain of the Music Department chair Marshall Kimball in his proposal for the Leader in Residence program. Initially a small event for arts advocacy, the bash blossomed into a community wide event with three stages of live entertainment, fantastic art displays, and a number of children s activities all for free. As the event grew into its final product, the People s Bank Theatre cooperated quite nicely with the music department to ensure success, whether it be passing out flyers in the program for other shows or providing the performers a comfortable space ... Since not all can be processed at once, the leaves are stored in a large bin that is kept at the proper temperature by blowing cool air into the bottom. After the tea leaves are plucked, they must be dried to prevent fermentation, which stops any enzyme activity that causes oxidation. Steaming is normally used in Japan. Before the steaming process begins, the tea leaves are sorted and cleaned. The steaming time determines the type of tea that is produced. Sencha tea is normally steamed for 30 90 seconds. Another type of sencha called fukamushi is steamed for 90 150 seconds to produce a flaky light yellowish green tea. Steaming is conducted in a bamboo tray over water or by a revolving or belt conveyor type machine. After mechanical steaming, the leaves go into a cooling machine that blows the water from the leaves. After drying, a number of rolling and drying steps take place. A special machine is used to accomplish the first rolling and drying steps simultaneously and takes about 48 minutes. The tea leaves are dried to improve their strength so they can be pressed during the next drying process. Moisture from both the surface and from the inside of the tea leaves is removed using this machine. This machine consists of a spindle with finger shaped extensions that stir the leaves while heated air (at 93.2 96.8° F [34 36° C]) is blown into the machine. Though the rolling temperature ... At its peak, Detroit was the fifth largest city in the United States, becoming the home to over 1.8 million people by 1950 (Davey, Monica 2013). Design And Design Of Design Essay Design and build is a generic term describing a procurement route in which the main contractor is appointed to design and construct the works, as opposed to a traditional contract, where theclient appoints consultants to design the development and then a contractor is appointed to construct the works. Design and build can appeal to clients as it gives a single point of responsibility for delivering the entire project. Some clients however consider it is only appropriate for simple projects, wheredesign quality is not the main consideration. The contractor can either be appointed to carry out all of the design work, or if the client wishes to have greater influence over the design, a concept design and outline (or performance)specification can be prepared by a consultants employed by the client, and then the contractor is appointed to complete the design and carry out the construction. The contractor may use their own in house designers to design the building, or they can appoint consultant designers, or the client s designers can be employed by the contractor to complete the design (either by novation or consultant switch). If the contractor is appointed at the outset of the project (so that they can contribute to the development of the design from the beginning), they may be appointed through a two stage process. In the first stage, the contractor is selected on the basis of a fee, preliminaries, overheads and profit. They then work with the design team (who may be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Except for religion, clothes, behavior, beliefs, or food, which define culture as a unique phenomenon, music enormously contributes to its existence in any period of the nation s development. Early American music is famous for a distinctive genre popular during the mid 1890s, called ragtime, notable for its special syncopation and composers. Ragtime used to be a solely American style of musical works composed of three or four strikingly different sections, in other words, strains, one of which was 16 or 32 measures in length. Due to an astonishing syncopation, namely replacement of the beat from its regular course of meter, ragtime compositions became both threatening and thrilling to the American youngsters. The displaced beat caused the listeners to feel hyperactive as well as evoked strong associations with so called low class music of the Negroes ( History of ragtime, n.d.). Although ragtime was composed for a piano, modern chronicles mention a significant role of the banjo in the development of this musical genre. In 1881, a writer Lafcadio Hearn noted that the blacks used the piano as a banjo, producing new ragged rhythms, later called banjo figuration ( History of ragtime, n.d.). ... Adapting a legend adds a whole new depth to the story, as it makes the narrative so appealing. Personally, I had never heard of this legend before, but the first novel actually made me want to learn more about that time period and the legends mariners would tell of the mysteries of the sea. • 34. Juvenile Homicide Can Be Prevented Essay Introduction For every 12 homicides committed in the United States 1 of them involves a juvenile offender (Howard N. Snyder, Juvenile Offenders and Victims, 2006). Although most American don t realize it, juvenile homicide is a problem in the United States that needs to be fixed. Even though statistics show that the homicide rate done by juveniles is at its lowest rate since the early 1980 s it is still a problem. Juvenile homicide has lowered in the recent years, but the fact that it still happens is chilling to most Americans. Most Americans believe that juveniles who show early signs of deviant acts are not a big deal, however if we try and help those juveniles, we can possibly stop them from committing homicidal acts when they get ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the recent years many criminologists have used three different demographics used to describe juvenile homicide offenders. Those are: juvenile gang members, between 15 17 years in age, and mostly males (Directorate, 2002). They are often gang members; when gangs recruit members to join their gang they will often target the young, because they can mold them to believe that the gang is the main thing in their life. If they get in the gang they are more likely to begin to carry guns, and deal drugs compared to juveniles who are not gang members. In data gathered from interviews of arrested juveniles in the Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) study, The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention states that juvenile gang members are reasonably more likely to carry a gun on a day to day basis compared to the juveniles which are not involved in gangs (31% percent compared to 20%) (James C. Howell, 1999). With saying that, James C. Howell, and Scott R. Decker found that the juvenile homicide problem in St. Louis was mainly largely a gun homicide problem (James C. Howell, 1999). The average age of a juvenile homicide offender is in their upper teens. According to The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention from 2006 and 2008, 90% of the juvenile homicide offenders were 15 17 years old, compared to only 10% were 6 14 years old. • 45. Sunshine And Light In The Scarlett Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The Scarlett Letter is a satire based around a Puritan culture published in the 1850 s. The novel is based around Hester Prynne, who commits adultery against her husband Roger Chillingworth. Hester s sin causes her daughter Pearl and her to be treated wrongly by the Puritans. The Puritans are ruthless and harsh towards sinners such as Hester Prynne, unlike the natural world which is merciful and kind. The novel tells a story of characters trying to find their way into the sympathetic light or lose their way into the deep despair of darkness. Hawthorne uses sunshine or light as an element of forgiveness and innocence, while using the darkness to symbolize the evil. The contradiction between the light and darkness can be depicted between Pearl who is favored by the sunshine, Hester who is later favored, and Chillingworth who is enveloped by the evil darkness. Hawthorne s use of sunshine to favor Pearl presents the understanding that Pearl is innocent and pure. Pearl was brought into the world out of sin and the Puritans view her as a child from the devil. The use of sunshine and light to Pearl s favor contradicts these assumptions made by the judgmental Puritans. Supported in the text by Hester telling Pearl to acquire her own sunshine, No my little Pearl! Said her mother. Thou must gather thine own sunshine. I have none to give thee! What they did have conquered was divided into parts amongst different rulers, who were constantly at war with each other, lacking the peace that Pax Romana had. The conquered Greek lands did not have a chance to civilize as one great empire as the Romans had. The Byzantine Empire followed the Roman Empire, and it, also, seems meager in comparison. In the 1930s, migrant workers had to go through some pretty rough times in order to support themselves. Today, migrant workers work extremely hard to support their families while, at the same time, sending their kids to school. However, the world in the 1930s was very different than it is today. In the 1930s, the crash of the stock market which lead to the Great Depression left people with practically nothing. This caused them to become migrants. They would travel all over California following the work. In the same way, migrant workers today struggle to find the money that they need while still allowing their children to get an education, so just like in the 1930s, they travel from state to state looking for work. Another similarity between the two times is the fact that in both cases there it a glimmer of hope. In the 1930s, after working so hard for years, the economy improved and the workers were able to settle down and have a better life. Today, programs like MET help the children of migrant worker families make it through school. If these kids make it all the way through, they will most likely be able to end the cycle. In The Structure of Scientific Revolutions Thomas Kuhn argues that normal science inevitably runs into a crisis. Why is it necessarily the case? Is there a way to avoid scientific crises? In Thomas Kuhn s paradigm cycle, normal science inevitably leads to an anomaly, which eventually leads into a crisis. If the current existing theory in the paradigm fails to solve the puzzles of normal science, it will eventually call for a new theory to take its place. Kuhn further expresses that, although, normal science holds the objective of creating boundaries and structure in the scientific community, and thus, suppressing ideas and findings outside of this structure, normal science is also a driving force of the creation of anomalies and an eventual paradigm shift. Scientists ultimate goal is to unravel the truth of the universe. Normal science and the existing paradigm are successful, in the beginning, in aiding and justifying scientific findings of that time. However, as experiments and research methods progress and advance with time, the polished version of the theories and concepts may start to conflict with the initial paradigm. It is the success of normal science, which is inevitable through time, that leads to an, thus, inevitable crisis. The increasing precision and improvement of understanding the paradigm, makes the paradigm an easier target to find ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author had four parts of his argument. He introduces the arguments and claims that he can defend religion. In the introduction, the author puts out a hypothetical situation where a person, Fred, believes in evolution and God. Fred can see that evolution does not include whether not God is involved. The author claims that this is similar to a debunking argument, but he can defend a religious belief. The author then goes over the structure of his argument and requests patience from the reader on the matter. In the second part of his argument, the author explains religion and its origins. According to psychologists, folk theories are universal processes of human thought and we have found a lot of them. However the fact that we have folk theories does not explain why we have them. Debunking does not argue about whether cognitive evolution is true, it argues around the implications if it were true. Belief forming processes must be truth tracking. However, does that meant that evolution forces us into skepticism? The author doesn t believe so, because of the possibility of a Milvian Bridge. Natural selection would help if it selected for the truth. Targets of beliefs should be causes of beliefs, making them remote and proximate. This is his detailed account of a Milvian Bridge.
