Mythology in Zora Neale Hurston s Their Eyes Were...
Mythology is a key part of many of Zora Neale Hurston s short stories and novels. She researched the
stories of her home town and many other areas of the world. Hurston used this knowledge of myths
and stories to help her carry them on to later generations in a form that almost everybody could relate
to. Through out all of Zora Neale Hurston s stories, mythology has been a crucial keystone. Her novel,
Their Eyes Were Watching God, has been influenced by three different ancient myths: the myths of
Ezili Freda, Osiris and Isis, and Aphrodite and Adonis.
Janie s love for nature and turbulent relationships comes from the myth of the Haitian Goddess of

(Pondrom 181). Ishtar fell in love with a God by the name of Tammuz and eventually ended up being
responsible for his death (Pondrom 181). She descended into the underworld and was successful in
bringing him back and she lived at peace (Pondrom 181). We see strong parallels to this myth in Their
Eyes Were Watching God. After multiple loveless relationships Janie fell in love with Tea Cake. She
eventually had to kill him because he had rabies. Later, she was able to restore him to her memory,
bringing her peace. Isis and Osiris were in love, but this relationship did not last long once Osiris was

the company, it affected so much more; it had such a huge impact on the birds, whales, and the costal
habitats. Six years ago the Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico blew out, causing an explosion. Oil
leaked from the broken well from mid April to mid July, nearly three months, causing more than 200
million gallons of crude oil to swim out onto the gulf shoreline. In addition to the oil, almost 2 million
gallons of virulent dispersant was used. The chemical dispersant did not lessen the amount of oil, but

Ilya Kaminsky s We Lived Happily During The War
I think it s fair to say that a majority of people in the United States get up every morning with only
miniscule problems to worry about. We are not affected by a crashing economy. We don t have mass
numbers of people starving to the point where they are skin and bone. We don t deal with people
trying to kill us for having different religious views as them. We don t have a multitude of corrupt
groups fighting for power over our nation. We don t wake up surrounded by damages of the atrocities
caused by extremist s bombs. Other countries, however, are not this fortunate, and Ilya Kaminsky s
poem, We Lived Happily During the War does an excellent job of pointing this out.
It s clear when reading this poem, the main theme of it is that there are people in this world who are
not nearly as fortunate as us. We feel bad for them and make a big deal out of how horrible their
situation is. Yet, we don t actually go out and do anything worthwhile about it for fear of losing our
own comforting bubble of safety.
The idea of us feeling bad for those in direr situations and crying for something to be done appears
right at the beginning of the poem when it says, And when they bombed other people s houses, we
protested, (Ilya Kaminsky, 1 and 2). This quote is very apparently true to us. The news, for several
years now, has been full of protests saying that we need to offer help to people in war stricken and
terrorist filled countries. This quote could also point out or stand for more
