The Seminole Essay
The Seminole
quot;As the United States is a nation made up of people from many nations, so the
Seminole is a tribe made up of Indians from many tribes. quot; (Garbarino 13) The
Seminole are the indigenous people living in southeastern America. They lived in what is now
Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and
Mississippi. The Seminole had a Muskogean language of the Hokan Siouan stock.
(Bookshelf) The Indian tribes found in the southeast were the Creek, Choctaw,
Chickasaw, Cherokee, Yuchi, Yamassee, Apalachicola, Timucua, and Calusa. The southeastern Indians
were described by the Spanish as being tall with complexions ranging from olive, to brownish. The
Indians in the mountainous regions were described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although these plants grow plentifully, the Seminoles lived more by hunting and gathering. It was
easier to hunt and fish because the woodlands and rivers were filled with an abundance of game. The
Indians also gathered founds that were found in the environment, like berries, nuts, tubers, and seeds.
(Seminole 626)
The jobs of gathering and growing plants were doled out to the women. They also had to prepare and
cook the food that the men obtained. Most of the time, they baked boiled, or broiled the food. The
women also preserved the food that they collect, such as plums and persimmons. (Garbarino 17) The
men usually helped where there was heavy and intensive work to be do be done, like clearing land and
harvesting, but the men s main jobs were to hunt, fish, and battle.
(Seminole Indians 290) The men hunted animals for their hides in addition to their meats. The most
hunted for animals were: deer, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, bears, turkeys, ducks, and geese. The
Indians also ate alligator meat, turtle meat, shellfish, and fresh and salt water fish. (Garbarino 15)
The Indians lived in villages that ranged in size from 20 to 100 houses and in population from 100 to
more than one thousand. The homes were most likely to be built around a square or town plaza. The
central area of the square was left for ceremonial purposes. The chief s house, a meeting hall, storage

St Vincent De Paul Swot Analysis
Non profit organisation: St Vincent de Paul
Fundraising campaign: Walk A Thon
Situation analysis
St Vincent de Paul is a non profit organisation that aims at achieving awareness and improving the
lives of those who face social injustice in Australia. These issues include, homelessness, poverty and
asylum seekers (St Vincent de Paul, 2016). This non profit organises many fundraising events
throughout the year as well as having Night Patrol volunteers each night go out into Sydney CBD and
give the homeless food and beverages. Homelessness is a large issue within Australia, as
approximately one in every two hundred people spends the night out on the street (Homelessness
Australia, 2012). All of these people are in dire need of basic necessities, ... Show more content on

This simple message is very powerful in the way that it can teach people that one simple act of

Each target public will have a different key message aimed at them because no target public is or

1. NSW Primary and Secondary Schools → Every step counts
This key message demonstrates to the children that even the simplest of acts, such as a small donation,
is still important in raising awareness of social injustices. It allows these young children and teenagers
to realise that it is important to do whatever they can to others as it can make a different no matter how
big or small the gesture is.
2. Employees and CEOs of Major Corporations and Organisations → Walk 4 Others
This key message will symbolise the importance of not thinking of themselves and doing acts that
solely benefit themselves. They should learn to participate in events that can benefit those who are less
fortunate.

The Concept of Personal Identity
Personal Identity in philosophy refers to a person s self perception, ones belief about who they are and
how they differ form others. Locke and Hume both share their ideas about Personal identity and
although they might both drastically differ they are still both puzzling. Locke s theory on personal
identity has to do with what make a person the same person over time, and to Locke remaining the
same person doesn t necessarily mean remaining the same physically. For, since consciousness always
accompanies thinking, and it is that which makes every one to be what he calls self, and thereby
distinguishes himself from all other thinking things, in this alone consists personal identity (53). He
believes that personal identity and consciousness go hand in hand, he thinks personal identity is
conceived through ones awareness of current thoughts and actions. You are who you are because of
your thoughts and memories. Locke believes that the only accommodation that should be encountered
in order for a person to still have their identity is the awareness of past experiences. They must be able
to remember there past experiences in order for them to preserve their identity. Locke discusses the
possibility of two forms having the same consciousness. He claims that these two forms, because they
have the same memories, experiences, and consciousness must be the same person. Locke s is trying
to tell us that a person can indeed inhabit two different men. An objection to Locke s view

Mitsubishi A6m Zero Essay
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was the prize fighter of the Japanese Imperial Navy. Shrouded in myth and
legend, it was a plane for which the United Stated had no answer. It was commissioned as, a triple
threat: an escort with the extreme range needed to accompany bombers deep into China and later to
cover vast Pacific distances; a point defense interceptor with a rapid rate of climb to hit attacking
bombers before they reached their targets; and a consummate dogfighter with extreme
maneuverability (Wilkinson Myth of the Zero 25). It had a reputation as the most agile plane in the
skies, as well as the plane with the best maneuverability. From the dawn of the War in the Pacific the
Japanese used this aircraft as their primary fighter. Its appearance ... Show more content on

The test flights gave the United States the flight specifications of the Zero and also demonstrated some
of the places where the Zero fell short. The U.S. learned that the engine of the Zero had a tendency to
sputter in a dive. They also learned the aircraft was not particularly good at rolling maneuvers,
especially rolling toward the right. They also learned the fighter had no armor and had a very thin
fuselage. The plane also lacked self sealing fuel tanks. This meant the fighter was susceptible to
almost any kind of enemy fire and one key hit could bring the whole plane crashing

The Effects Of Drug Market Pulling Levers Policing On...
Lastly, we will look at the pulling lever strategy used in High Point. Like the authors say in The
Impact of Drug Market Pulling Levers Policing on Neighborhood Violence , the reason why they did
this study was to examine the impact of the various place‐based pulling levers interventions that were
implemented in High Point (Corsaro, Hunt, Hipple, McGarrell). The reader can interpret from the
article that the purpose is to conclude what context is needed for pulling lever strategies to work in
deterrence. They go into an in‐depth statistical analysis describing the sensitivity present as there
could be things like types of selection biases. Statisticians must be careful when navigating data as we
found before where the Panel could not conclude that the pulling lever strategies had a direct
relationship between the crime rates. In the article they do come to a conclusion where they find that
although pulling levers has shown potential when focused on gangs and groups involved with
networks of chronic, violent offenders, far less is known about its capacity to diminish violent crime
associated with locally operated street drug markets (Corsaro, Hunt, Hipple, McGarrell). Essentially, it
is describing the limitations that are presented with pulling lever strategies. Like multiple of the other
articles, they have found that this strategy works for gang related violence. They question whether the
strategy would be as effective if it were applied to crime that is associated

Learning Chinese-Personal Narrative Essay
Learning Chinese Personal Narrative
In 1995, I decided to volunteer as a missionary for my church. On the application form, there was no
space for suggestions as to where in the world I would like to serve as a missionary. Church leaders
assign missionaries to the place they feel we should go. I was surprised with the assignment to serve in
Taiwan, speaking Mandarin Chinese. I had no previous experience with Chinese people or their
language, so I felt fortunate that the church provides 2 months of intensive language training before
the missionary even gets on the plane. During my 2 months in the language training center, I found out
just how different Mandarin Chinese is from my native language. The time went by quickly, and ...

I found, upon returning home a year ago, that I still hadn t picked up many of these items. While my
speaking ability had reached a point that native Chinese people clearly understood my pronunciation
and tones, my mastery of those items that had not been clearly taught to me sometimes caused major
communication breakdowns. Frustrated, I decided to isolate these parts of speech that were giving me
so much trouble, look them up in reference grammars, and figure out once and for all how to use them
like a native Chinese person. It was this search that raised the questions that I will attempt to answer in
this paper.
The part of Chinese I chose to examine for this paper is the perfective aspect (PRV) le particle. I will
analyze and compare how various grammars, textbooks, and studies describe and explain this particle.
Because most of the descriptions and explanations of this particle seem to be based mainly on the
theories and ideas of the authors of these analyses, it seemed that a survey of native Chinese speakers
would provide a good standard by which to judge these theories. Li and Thompson s book,
MANDARIN CHINESE A Functional Reference Grammar (1981) is widely used to teach learners of
Chinese how to use the PRV le particle. That is why, for this paper, I chose to put Li and Thompson up

Managing The Population Through Education And Birth...
When the world celebrated the 7 billionth baby s birth in Manila a few years back, we were stepping
in a society with noticeable population explosion. Those overpopulated societies which can no longer
sustain themselves invade the natural environment which belongs to wildlife and over exploit natural
resources for survival. Human beings are supposed to be responsible for the majority of environmental
problems, while overpopulation exacerbates most problems such as pollution, deforestation, global
warming, etc. Thus, to save the world from those environmental crises we should attach more
importance on the people that cause them rather than just reply on developing technology to fix the
problem its own. Managing the population through education and birth control policy is what we can
do with global joint efforts. Reminding the public of our population problem, providing an option of
birth control to families and guiding the public to live sustainably will slow down the population
growth, and hopefully in the long sense reduce world s population. Most importantly, such declining
population which owns greener lifestyle creates a benign and harmonious relationship with the planet.
The UNICEF estimates that an average of 353,000 babies are born each day; this means a baby is born
to the world every two seconds. About 60 years ago, the world s population is less than a half of what
it is right now. Therefore, if the population continue to grow with this rate, the

The End Of The Stranger By Albert Camus
At the end of The Stranger by Albert Camus, the protagonist Meursault says: For me to feel less alone,
I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet
me with cries of hate. (123). It is here that Meursault proposes a new look at the relationship between
internal suffering and the external manifestation of that suffering: hateful spectators. Similarly, in
Crime and Punishment, Marmeladov and Katerina have their individual miseries highlighted through
both personal strife and, inevitable, their public deaths. Despite the different circumstances of their
deaths, both seem to suggest that the crowd of disgusted spectators offer validation to Marmeladov
and Katerina s suffering.
The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, the carriage drivers story is corroborated by three bystanders: That s exactly how it was!
some witness responded from the crowd. he did shout ... another voice responded everybody heard it!
cried a third. (175). This demonstrates how the audience has a vested interested in being a part of the
narrative. Here, Dostoevsky uses the parallel of the coachman s three shouts with the three witnesses
to show a contradiction between the motives of the two similar but distinct parties. The carriage driver
attempts to distance himself from the tragedy of the event, while the crowd strives to become part of
the tragedy, whether it be by encroaching on the scene, or by confirming the coachman s story. The
witnesses strive to be a part of the struggle, and in doing so, it serves to highlight the magnitude of
Marmeladov s physical suffering.
This interplay between sufferer and spectators culminates when Dostoevsky uses the narrator to
highlight the entertainment value of a tragedy and to elaborate on the satisfaction that the audience
receives from the spectacle. As Marmeladov s death scene approaches its end Katerina pleads with the
spectators to leave: You might as well let him die in peace! she shouted at the whole crowd A fine
show you ve found for yourselves! (179). Katerina laments about the show that Marmeladov s death
has become. She is frustrated that a room full of spectators that she has

A Critique of DiLorenzo s The Real Lincoln Essay
A Critique of the Real Lincoln
The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War, by
Thomas J. DiLorenzo completely shatters the illusion of the 16th President as the liberator of the
slaves. DiLorenzo provides convincing evidence for Lincoln s overt racism as expressed in his
documented views on racial supremacy as stated in his desire to colonize all American blacks outside
the United States (p. 4); Lincoln s views were matched by the majority in the North who used such
tools as state constitutional amendments to prohibit the emigration of black people into Northern
states like Lincoln s home of Illinois (p. 4); and that the Presidents war which killed 620, 000
Americans and destroyed 40% of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
DiLorenzo shows that Lincoln s entire agenda was focused on advancing these three goals. Many
southern states believed with the coming of Lincoln into the White House he would push for his
agenda of increased federal government spending and control.
So when Lincoln suspended the writ of Habeas corpus in order to arrest those accused of treason, the
Peace Democrats had more ammunition against the president. There was much controversy as to
whether the president had the power to suspend habaes corpus, and it was argued that only Congress
had that right. The writ of habeas corpus protects people from arbitrary arrest and detainment. The
power to do so was both that of the legislative branch as well as the judicial branch. It was unclear
whether the Philadelphia convention placed it in Article I, just to identify it or define it as a legislative
function. Either way, Lincoln did so, and the suspension of the writ of Habeas corpus brought on
thousands of arbitrary arrests. Many of those who were arrested were spies, foreigners and smugglers.
The question is: Did Lincoln go too far and unlawfully exercise his executive powers to manipulate
constitutional limits?
Thomas DiLorenzo spends the rest of the book discussing secession, Lincoln s assumption of war
powers, his resort to total warfare, the story of Reconstruction, the cruel Indian

Childrens Health Insurance Program
Improving Children s Health Insurance Program through Health Policy
Children s health correlates to the health of the nation. The health of a child is a direct factor of adult
health, productivity, and stability. If a nation has high morbidity and mortality rates for children, it will
negatively impact that society s growth and development. It is imperative that children have health
insurance and access to quality preventative and primary care, in order to foster healthy development
into adulthood. The Children s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was established as a part of the
Balanced Budget Act of 1997, to acknowledge to millions of children who lacked health coverage

However, nearly two thirds of the uninsured children in the United States remain eligible for Medicaid
or CHIP, but are not enrolled (Wachino Weiss, 2009, p. 3). An estimated, 7.5 million children in the
United States are uninsured, and 60% to 70% are eligible for public insurance (Long et al., 2014, p.
e788). Many children meet the requirements and eligibility for health care insurance; however, a large
percentage of children are still left uninsured. This is problematic because if millions of children are
uninsured, it increases their chances of illness and will have a negative impact on their growth and
development. The policy needs to be re evaluated so that more children are insured and receive access
to preventative and primary care. It is crucial that children have access to healthcare coverage and,
states do not create unnecessary stringent criteria for eligibility; consequentially will decrease the
coverage for low income children and families (Miskell Alker,

My Understanding of Extremism and Domestic Terrorism Essay
My understanding of extremism is that it s a term used to describe the actions or ideologies of
individuals or groups outside the perceived political center of a society; or otherwise claimed to
violate common moral standards. In democratic societies, individuals or groups which advocate that
democracy should be replaced with some kind of authoritarian regime are usually branded extremists.
There have been several terrorist acts committed in the United States of America, not by terrorists that
live in other countries and despise the American ways and ideas, but by our own citizens who live and

Americans feel that after 911, the sense of patriotism and support for the government should have
been at an all time high. However, strict government reforms and new laws that have tightened and,
what some feel, interfere with some of our freedoms since 911 have drastically upset many of the
extremist groups and militias. Militia members have intense hatred or fear toward the government and
believe that there are federal conspiracies in which the government is planning to disarm its citizens.
Hatred for the government grows out of these faucets as it faces these groups with opposition and
attempts to expose them. Anti government extremists are a large part of the radicals that cause a lot of
the domestic terrorism. They are driven by their strong beliefs and goals and believe that they are
correct in their thinking and the government is wrong. Domestic extremists are driven by internal
factors and pursue a domestic agenda.
Although anti government extremists are a large part of the domestic terrorism group. There are

She will not allow her brothers to persuade her to live with her sister Lucy. She will not allow herself
to be taken into another household in which she will not be heard. In this obstinence she stands in
marked contrast with her brothers. While they are described as subject animal[s] in the face of their
future (239), Mabel s bulldog face shows her determination (238). She fights stubbornly for her
independence. Her determination and power are manifested when the doctor, Jack Ferguson, comes to
visit. Notably, Jack is immediately made uncomfortable by the way she looks at him. Even in her
silence, she wields a power that intimidates Jack.
This idea of Mabel being intimidating may seem counter to later events in the story. When Mabel

because there is no danger of rejection from the dead. Knowing that death will not reject her, Mabel
shortly thereafter walks out into the middle of a pond. Everything about the pond suggests death. It is
referred to as the dead water, the dead cold, and the dead cold pond (248). Since there is no rejection

However, the ironic power of her attempted suicide is reflected in the sudden action she inspires in
Jack. The moment that Jack sees Mabel in the water he is strangely

p. 82). Therefore, the adult narrator s ability to comment and reflect on his child self effectively
emphasizes the naïve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and
suspense throughout the novel, now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way (Chapter 1.
p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of childhood
and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he went away...the relationship
between Ted and Marian would cease (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is able to analyse
his feelings, I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and frightened (Chapter 16. p.
183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively conveys a sense of the adult
narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner, whereas child narrator s naïve
attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis, believing that he is solely to blame
for the blossoming of the lovers affair, I had attacked them first (Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader
feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo s predicament as he possesses a common child like
sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that he is merely facilitating the relationship
between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees

Beach Erosion Essay
In December 2013, a massive tidal surge flooded 1,400 homes along the east coast of the U.K., which
has managed to destroy and tumble some of these houses into the Atlantic Ocean. Over the next
century, it is estimated that estates worth over 1 billion pounds will be lost due to the effects of coastal
erosion. And within the next 20 years, over 800 estates will be lost. Coastal erosion is the reduction of
material attached to the coastline by various natural or man led activities; coastal erosion leads to the
landward retreat of the coast. Coastal erosion endangers coastal civilisations livelihood and source of
income thus, defending it through efficient means is important as it stabilises the lives of the people
who inhabit the coast. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The groyne field was placed in conjunction with beach nourishment projects to stabilise a shore that
was eroding at a gradual rate before the groynes were built. Between 1929 and 1977, the shoreline
remained relatively stable. However, after 1977, the groynes became increasingly ineffective, and the
shoreline began eroding at much higher rates due to lack of maintenance. Today, the groynes are in
poor shape and have occasionally been flanked at their landward ends(?). Several massive winter
storms have since induced severe beach erosion and threatened to reverse the achievements of the
protective measures put into place in Bethany Beach. Furthermore, a 147 year record of shoreline
positions from 1850 1997 was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the groyne field at Bethany Beach
and assess its impact on the adjacent beaches. The results indicate that the combination of the groyne
field and beach fill have effectively stabilised the beach for nearly 50 years. However, the
deterioration of the groynes and a series of large winter storms has resulted in increased beach erosion
over the last 20 years in spite of multiple large scale beach nourishment projects. This analysis also
indicates that the combination of methods would fail without the groynes receiving constant and
efficient maintenance, regardless of whether the beach nourishment projects are continued or not.

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman
Ernest J. Gaines book, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, used many historical events to
connect to the characters story. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman was published by Bantam
Books in 1972 and has 259 pages. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is a classic fictional book.
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is the story if a women s life told when she was over one

When slavery was abolished many black people were killed because they where no longer anyone s

In the story Jane talked about how many former slaves as well as herself do not cry much anymore
because they have seen so much death and tragedy that it has become a normal thing. Nate, a small
boy Jane had to take care of in the story, knew not to make any noise while in the bushes hiding from

The Tragedy Of Romeo And Juliet Conflict Essay
Extreme Conflicts Leads to Tragedy
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in 1597 and it is about two
teens who fall in love although they come from two rival families. Romeo and Juliet s hastened love
turns into a tragic ending and takes the lives of both lovers and many others. The death of the two
main characters is by far the most important scene in the play to show theme and this theme is that
extreme conflicts lead to extreme endings. Romeo and Juliet s death had the biggest impact on the
play in showing the theme and this is because of the following four reasons, the first reason is the
deaths ended a pointless and ongoing family feud, it brought back peace to the streets of Verona, it

Verona was becoming very violent due to the Montague Capulet feud and this is very prevalent even
in the very beginning of the book, for act I Scene 1 opens up with a fight scene between two Capulet
servants and two Montague servants. Luckily it did not result in the death of anyone, but it easily
could have and probably would have if it wasn t for Benvolio being such a peacemaker. Not all
Montague Capulet encounters were like this though, throughout the play many resulted in death and
this led to the prince saying that anyone who kills someone of the other side will face death. These
remarks by the prince shows that this feud was getting way out of hand and the prince realized this
and thought that this penalty would stop the feud; However, this did cool the feud down for a short
time, Romeo killed Tybalt day after the prince ruled that murder would result in death. In this case,
this shows that the two families would rather die than make up with one another and the death of
Romeo and Juliet ends all of this. after the death of the feud ends, and so did the

South Korea Has A Liberal Democratic Government Type Essay
South Korea has a liberal democratic government type. The liberal democratic government type can
be described as a political ideology and a form of government in which representative democracy
operates under the principles of liberalism. Overall, the government is stable despite one of the top
issues of business complaints is dealing with political instability. South Korea has elections by popular
vote for the President every five years. The Presidency is limited to one five year term. The
government is also consistent because of the election frequency.
Despite, tension with China, the government understands the importance of keeping business relations
with one of their top trading partners. South Korea is ranked 32 of 112 countries in their degree of
democracy. South Korea has several non governmental organizations (NGOs). NGOs can be described
as an organization that is neither a part of a government nor a conventional for profit business. Some
of the goals are to combat trafficking, develop a positive community, spread peace, and to provide
child care through the House of Hope, World Vision Korea, and many other NGOs that are prominent.
South Korea is stable for business owners as well. The risk of confiscations are low and expropriation

How Does The Baclofen Pump Be Successful At Helping Anyone...
Imagine you know someone with Cerebral Palsy. This could be someone who has a hard time hearing
or even communicating with others. On a regular day for a child who has Cerebral Palsy may not
always be able to do what other children or adults do in their ordinary life. For example, Cerebral
Palsy children may not be able to walk like a regular person, or ride a bike like a regular child. In
order to control Cerebral Palsy there are multiple treatments such as the baclofen pump. This
treatment is more likely to be successful, rather than the Botox injections and phenol blocks. It has
been proven that the baclofen pump is more likely to be successful at helping anyone with Cerebral
Palsy. Although, there are several different types and causes of Cerebral Palsy that someone could
develop. These causes are Terminology, Dysgensis, Periventricular Leukomalacia, and Hypoxic
Ischemic Encephalopath. I will be explaining each and every one of them more in detail. With these
causes, there are different treatments that could be used to treat the causes. These causes include
Botox Injections, Phenol Blocks, Baclofen Orally, and Intrathecal Baclofen. Later on, I will be
explaining the pro s and con s of each one. The word cerebral means the brain and the word palsy
means muscle weakness and poor control. Children or adults can be born with Cerebral Palsy or might
be diagnosed later in life. The disorder may occur during the woman s pregnancy, child s birth, or after

to observe his behavior in a social setting because there are several other children there that are the

The mother states that Josh is alert most of the time. He wakes easily and can go to sleep easily or stay

that he was being observed. I will be looking to see how Josh engages and interacts with other

Biological Theories Of Criminology
Lombroso believed that the characteristics of the criminal are outside the immediate control of the
individual, such as biological, psychological and sociological (Ellwood 1912, 717; White and Haines
2008, 33; 37). Biological characteristics are divided into three types of somatoypes, Endomorph,
Mesomorph and Ectomorph (Shoemaker 2013, 68). Endomorph is the excessive, soft body weight and
an extroverted personality (Shoemaker 2013, 68). Mesomorph is an athletically built and muscular
structure and aggressive behaviour (Shoemaker 2013, 68). Ectomorph, can be described as thin and
delicate and having an introverted personality who are not likely to commit crime (Shoemaker 2013,

Classicism and Positivism have both positively and negatively impacted on contemporary
understandings of criminology and criminal justice practices. Currently, both theories are viewed in
combination with each other rather than individually (Fishbein 1990, 27). If considered alone they do
not offer a complete assessment of the contributions to criminal behaviour (Fishbein 1990, 27). In the
past, biological factors were largely rejected as a result of unscientific findings and the inability to
posit rational explanations (Fishbein 1990, 27). The viewpoint by criminologists was either nature
(biological) or nurture (sociological, environmental) (Fishbein 1990, 29). Whereas, the viewpoint is
now nature plus nurture and findings are now supported by science and posit rational explanations
(Fishbein 1990, 29). In relation to the characteristics of criminals, there continues to be criminal
stereotypes based on physical and sociological characteristics, especially race and class (Gatti and
Verde 2012, 20). In relation to punishment, the 18th century English system agreed with Beccaria s
view on punishment as it was said to provide effective deterrence and reflect the status quo (Draper
2000, 183). However, they did not agree with the same methods of punishment, unlike the 20th
century (Draper 2000,

Auditing And Auditing Essay
Introduction Employees today can see variation as an opportunity rather than a risk. Tim M. and
Timboon F., were the ones who observed that change is truly in the present business environment and
if done properly, it can aide the growth of business. When a person changes their job responsibilities,
they need to be aware of what can be considered a reasonable change in the latitude of their position
and what can constitute termination. Sensible changes are those that do not change the essential
position. Below are examples of the unfair and fair job changes: An administrative staff member who
is inquired to undertake lunch coverage of the reception duties or learn current system could be taken
to fall within the scope of an Office Assistant. Moving the same Office Assistant into a role which
contains basic of food and beverage service could constitute a redundancy situation. Implementing
changes to an employee s job description may have risks, occurring most often when the employee
claims the following: 1) Their position is redundant. 2) They have been efficiently and effectively
dismissed unfairly. They have been unfavorably treated because of a protected characteristic. Types of

The Art Of Being Hum Role Of Myth
In the textbook: The Art Of Being Human Chapter 3 is about the role of myth in the humanities.
Before art was made there was something called mythology. In every religion, there is a hero and that
hero was prophesied to save the world or save the people that believed in that religion or followed the
rules by granting them eternal life or afterlife in a promised land. The humanities could be found in
mythology. This essay will talk about how mythology, in the role of humanities, should be considered
nonfiction or real.
The birth of the hero may come in an extraordinary circumstance such as the womb of a virgin or a
mortal woman impregnated by a god. That hero is always a man. In Greek culture, that hero is
Hercules, son of Zeus and a mortal woman. In Christian Culture the hero is Jesus, son of God and the
Virgin Mary. His birth was announced by an angel and took place in an inn. Both births are similar
because they were both born with fathers that are gods and mothers that are mortals. Muhammad from
Islamic religion was also born from a virgin mother and announced by an angel. His mother Aminah

Profit Margin
This column covers fundamental analysis, which involves examining a company s financial statements
and evaluating its operations. The analysis concentrates only on variables directly related to the
company itself, rather than the stock s price movement or the overall state of the market. Profit Margin
Anal ysis A company s stock price, in large part, is driven by the company s ability to generate
earnings. Therefore, it is useful for investors to analyze the profitability of a company before investing
in it. One way to do this is by calculating and tracking various profit margins, which reflect how
efficiently a company uses its resources. Profit margins are expressed as a ratio, specifically earnings
as a percentage of sales. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the bottom line that garners most of the attention in discussions of a company s profitability.
The net profit margin (net margin) compares net income to sales, such that: Net profit margin = net
income after taxes ÷ sales A consistently high net margin is often indicative of a company with one or
more competitive advantages. Furthermore, a high net margin provides a company with a cushion
during downturns in its business. Margin Analysis When analyzing profit margins, it is useful to
examine the trends for individual companies over time as well as to compare a company s levels to its
competitors and to industry norms. However, it is important to note that margins can differ drastically
from company to company and industry to industry. Some industries, historically, have much higher
margins relative to others. For this reason, when comparing companies on the basis of their profit
margins, it is vital to compare firms in similar lines of business. Differences in margins for companies
in the same industry provide insights into industry and company specific cost structures. Table 1

Physical Storage Media Such As Usb Drives And External Hdds
physical storage media such as USB drives and external HDDs. If students backup work to personal
backup systems regularly their should be no issues with consistency but if students neglect to backup
work every time it is changed then them being in charge of their own backup would ne unpractical
because in the event of data loss they could not backup to the most recent version of the file.
There also arises an issue of students bringing their own storage media which as well as external
storage devices includes the student s device itself. It is possible that the student s devices have
become corrupted with various issues such as, worms, virus, adware and spyware. Depending on the
conditions, the network connection may create an environment for the malware to spread to other
devices and cause multiple infections. However an advantage of this would be the school would not

Situational Irony In O. Henry s Ransom Of Red Chief
In Ransom of Red Chief there are two kidnappers Sam and Bill planning on kidnapping Dorsett s son.
One day they go and kidnapped the kid. Once they get the kid to the cave he starts asking a lot of
questions. Then the kid attempts to scalp Bill. They get really desperate, and they want to get rid of
him because they are tired of him. So they send a ransom letter to Dorset. Then he sends a counter
profit saying how he would want his son return to get him off their hands. Finally, Sam and Bill had to
pay Dorset for them to return his son, and they ran into the valley. In Ransom of Red Chief O. Henry
uses situational irony to create humor in his short story. It is very entertaining to see the things that
happen throughout the story because the reader does not expect those things to happen. As a result of
O. Henry using situational irony, it develops the theme crime doesn t pay. In order for the reader to
understand the theme, they need to understand situational irony and how it affects the story.
Throughout the story, there are moments when there are humorous events. In the beginning part of the
story, Sam and Bill kidnap and the boy thinks it is fun. Yes, sir, that boy seemed to be having the time
of his life. The fun of camping out in a cave had made him forget that he was a captive himself
(Henry, 2). The reader would expect someone who is kidnapped to be scared and would not be having
the time of their life. I don t have any fun at home. I hate to go to school. I

Definition of Agency Theory
A supposition that explains the relationship between principals and agents in business. Agency theory
is concerned with resolving problems that can exist in agency relationships; that is, between principals
(such as shareholders) and agents of the principals (for example, company executives). The two
problems that agency theory addresses are: 1.) the problems that arise when the desires or goals of the
principal and agent are in conflict, and the principal is unable to verify (because it difficult and/or
expensive to do so) what the agent is actually doing; and 2.) the problems that arise when the principal
and agent have different attitudes towards risk. Because of different risk tolerances, the principal and

Outside investors recognize that the firm will make decisions contrary to their best interests.
Accordingly, investors will discount the prices they are willing to pay for the firm s securities.
A potential agency conflict arises whenever the manager of a firm owns less than 100 percent of the
firm s common stock. If a firm is a sole proprietorship managed by the owner, the owner manager will
undertake actions to maximize his or her own welfare. The owner manager will probably measure
utility by personal wealth, but may trade off other considerations, such as leisure and perquisites,
against personal wealth. If the owner manager forgoes a portion of his or her ownership by selling
some of the firm s stock to outside investors, a potential conflict of interest, called an agency conflict,
arises. For example, the owner manager may prefer a more leisurely lifestyle and not work as
vigorously to maximize shareholder wealth, because less of the wealth will now accrue to the owner
manager. In addition, the owner manager may decide to consume more perquisites, because some of
the cost of the consumption of benefits will now be borne by the outside shareholders.

During the Great Migration, African Americans began to build a new place for themselves in public
life, actively confronting economic, political and social challenges and creating a new black urban
culture that would exert enormous influence in the decades to come. 12. ollowing Wilson s declaration
of war against Germany, only the socialists continued to actively oppose the U.S. war effort. But in
1918 the Chicago Federation of Labor created a labor party predicated on anti militarist and anti
imperialist principles and subsequently spearheaded the drive for a national farmer labor party
committed to these same principles. Although the labor party movement proved short lived, it
provided an intellectual legacy for interwar pacifists who sought to promote the peaceful resolution of
conflicts outside the framework of the League of Nations.Chicago once again became a center of
antiwar agitation during World War II, boasting one of the most active America First chapters in the

out of European wars. America First bitterly attacked Roosevelt s policies in support of the allies
during 1940 41, arguing that they would provoke a German response which would make American

The Use Of Protective Lung Strategies And Effects On...
A research study can be broken out into 4 different parts: topic, problem, purpose and questions.
Aligning these components will make the article cohesive in its content and guarantee that the author
is staying on track. I examined three scholarly articles that describe studies related to the field of
Respiratory Therapy. I reviewed each article to determine the topic, problem, purpose and question to
see if the authors were able to maintain alignment throughout the article.
Article 1
Effect of a Protective Ventilation Strategy on Mortality in the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
(Amato et al.,). The topic of the article is the use of protective lung strategies and the effects they have
on mortality rate for patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The problem the
authors, and practitioners around the world, face is that traditional methods for mechanical ventilation
damage already diseased lungs which increases the mortality rate of patients with ARDS. The purpose
of this study is to define what lung protective strategies are comprised of and to determine if using
these strategies will reduce pulmonary complications which will ultimately decrease mortality rates.
The questions the authors focused on were:
What are the components of a lung protective strategy.
Will lung protective strategies decrease pulmonary complications in patients with ARDS?
Will decreasing pulmonary complications in this group decrease mortality rates?
The authors did a

In 1994, the APVA s (Association for the preservation Virginia) goal was to find the earliest secured

still at the site uncovering more and more artifacts from the cellar that was noted to be filled with trash
in 1610 because of a big cleanup that was ordered by the new governor Lord De La Warre at the time.
So far in the excavation they have found pieces of broken pottery, broken dishes, food remains, arrow
heads made of a local stone, tobacco, and pipes for the tobacco, coins, and buttons. They have also
found fishhooks, weapons, armor, equipment for glass making, woodworking, and also the bones of
fish and some livestock. At first, it was thought that the people were struggling to survive because of
their sour relationship with the Indians. The findings just tells us that they were able to live well by
fishing, hunting, the production of glass beads and exchange of copper, coins from other countries, L
shaped hooks called tenter hooks made out of iron which were used to hang up wool and dry animal
skins. It was definitely a colony capable of growth and success with craftsmen, glassblowers, metal

The Seminole Essay The Seminole quot;As the United States is a nation made up of people from many nations, so the Seminole is a tribe made up of Indians from many tribes. quot; (Garbarino 13) The Seminole are the indigenous people living in southeastern America. They lived in what is now Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi. The Seminole had a Muskogean language of the Hokan Siouan stock. (Bookshelf) The Indian tribes found in the southeast were the Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Yuchi, Yamassee, Apalachicola, Timucua, and Calusa. It was easier to hunt and fish because the woodlands and rivers were filled with an abundance of game. The Indians also gathered founds that were found in the environment, like berries, nuts, tubers, and seeds. (Seminole 626) The jobs of gathering and growing plants were doled out to the women. They also had to prepare and cook the food that the men obtained. Most of the time, they baked boiled, or broiled the food. The women also preserved the food that they collect, such as plums and persimmons. (Garbarino 17) The men usually helped where there was heavy and intensive work to be do be done, like clearing land and harvesting, but the men s main jobs were to hunt, fish, and battle. (Seminole Indians 290) The men hunted animals for their hides in addition to their meats. The most hunted for animals were: deer, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, bears, turkeys, ducks, and geese. The Indians also ate alligator meat, turtle meat, shellfish, and fresh and salt water fish. (Garbarino 15) The Indians lived in villages that ranged in size from 20 to 100 houses and in population from 100 to more than one thousand. • 4. The Concept of Personal Identity Personal Identity in philosophy refers to a person s self perception, ones belief about who they are and how they differ form others. Locke and Hume both share their ideas about Personal identity and although they might both drastically differ they are still both puzzling. Locke s theory on personal identity has to do with what make a person the same person over time, and to Locke remaining the same person doesn t necessarily mean remaining the same physically. For, since consciousness always accompanies thinking, and it is that which makes every one to be what he calls self, and thereby distinguishes himself from all other thinking things, in this alone consists personal identity (53). He believes that personal identity and consciousness go hand in hand, he thinks personal identity is conceived through ones awareness of current thoughts and actions. You are who you are because of your thoughts and memories. Locke believes that the only accommodation that should be encountered in order for a person to still have their identity is the awareness of past experiences. They must be able to remember there past experiences in order for them to preserve their identity. Locke discusses the possibility of two forms having the same consciousness. He claims that these two forms, because they have the same memories, experiences, and consciousness must be the same person. Locke s is trying to tell us that a person can indeed inhabit two different men. An objection to Locke s view ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was commissioned as, a triple threat: an escort with the extreme range needed to accompany bombers deep into China and later to cover vast Pacific distances; a point defense interceptor with a rapid rate of climb to hit attacking bombers before they reached their targets; and a consummate dogfighter with extreme maneuverability (Wilkinson Myth of the Zero 25). • 7. The Effects Of Drug Market Pulling Levers Policing On... Lastly, we will look at the pulling lever strategy used in High Point. Like the authors say in The Impact of Drug Market Pulling Levers Policing on Neighborhood Violence , the reason why they did this study was to examine the impact of the various place‐based pulling levers interventions that were implemented in High Point (Corsaro, Hunt, Hipple, McGarrell). The reader can interpret from the article that the purpose is to conclude what context is needed for pulling lever strategies to work in deterrence. They go into an in‐depth statistical analysis describing the sensitivity present as there could be things like types of selection biases. Statisticians must be careful when navigating data as we found before where the Panel could not conclude that the pulling lever strategies had a direct relationship between the crime rates. In the article they do come to a conclusion where they find that although pulling levers has shown potential when focused on gangs and groups involved with networks of chronic, violent offenders, far less is known about its capacity to diminish violent crime associated with locally operated street drug markets (Corsaro, Hunt, Hipple, McGarrell). Essentially, it is describing the limitations that are presented with pulling lever strategies. Like multiple of the other articles, they have found that this strategy works for gang related violence. They question whether the strategy would be as effective if it were applied to crime that is associated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the application form, there was no space for suggestions as to where in the world I would like to serve as a missionary. Church leaders assign missionaries to the place they feel we should go. I was surprised with the assignment to serve in Taiwan, speaking Mandarin Chinese. I had no previous experience with Chinese people or their language, so I felt fortunate that the church provides 2 months of intensive language training before the missionary even gets on the plane. While my speaking ability had reached a point that native Chinese people clearly understood my pronunciation and tones, my mastery of those items that had not been clearly taught to me sometimes caused major communication breakdowns. Frustrated, I decided to isolate these parts of speech that were giving me so much trouble, look them up in reference grammars, and figure out once and for all how to use them like a native Chinese person. It was this search that raised the questions that I will attempt to answer in this paper. The part of Chinese I chose to examine for this paper is the perfective aspect (PRV) le particle. I will analyze and compare how various grammars, textbooks, and studies describe and explain this particle. Because most of the descriptions and explanations of this particle seem to be based mainly on the theories and ideas of the authors of these analyses, it seemed that a survey of native Chinese speakers would provide a good standard by which to judge these theories. Li and Thompson s book, MANDARIN CHINESE A Functional Reference Grammar (1981) is widely used to teach learners of Chinese how to use the PRV le particle. • 9. Managing The Population Through Education And Birth... When the world celebrated the 7 billionth baby s birth in Manila a few years back, we were stepping in a society with noticeable population explosion. Those overpopulated societies which can no longer sustain themselves invade the natural environment which belongs to wildlife and over exploit natural resources for survival. Human beings are supposed to be responsible for the majority of environmental problems, while overpopulation exacerbates most problems such as pollution, deforestation, global warming, etc. Thus, to save the world from those environmental crises we should attach more importance on the people that cause them rather than just reply on developing technology to fix the problem its own. Managing the population through education and birth control policy is what we can do with global joint efforts. Reminding the public of our population problem, providing an option of birth control to families and guiding the public to live sustainably will slow down the population growth, and hopefully in the long sense reduce world s population. Most importantly, such declining population which owns greener lifestyle creates a benign and harmonious relationship with the planet. The UNICEF estimates that an average of 353,000 babies are born each day; this means a baby is born to the world every two seconds. About 60 years ago, the world s population is less than a half of what it is right now. Therefore, if the population continue to grow with this rate, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The End Of The Stranger By Albert Camus At the end of The Stranger by Albert Camus, the protagonist Meursault says: For me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate. (123). It is here that Meursault proposes a new look at the relationship between internal suffering and the external manifestation of that suffering: hateful spectators. Similarly, in Crime and Punishment, Marmeladov and Katerina have their individual miseries highlighted through both personal strife and, inevitable, their public deaths. Despite the different circumstances of their deaths, both seem to suggest that the crowd of disgusted spectators offer validation to Marmeladov and Katerina s suffering. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, the carriage drivers story is corroborated by three bystanders: That s exactly how it was! some witness responded from the crowd. he did shout ... another voice responded everybody heard it! cried a third. (175). This demonstrates how the audience has a vested interested in being a part of the narrative. Here, Dostoevsky uses the parallel of the coachman s three shouts with the three witnesses to show a contradiction between the motives of the two similar but distinct parties. The carriage driver attempts to distance himself from the tragedy of the event, while the crowd strives to become part of the tragedy, whether it be by encroaching on the scene, or by confirming the coachman s story. The witnesses strive to be a part of the struggle, and in doing so, it serves to highlight the magnitude of Marmeladov s physical suffering. This interplay between sufferer and spectators culminates when Dostoevsky uses the narrator to highlight the entertainment value of a tragedy and to elaborate on the satisfaction that the audience receives from the spectacle. As Marmeladov s death scene approaches its end Katerina pleads with the spectators to leave: You might as well let him die in peace! she shouted at the whole crowd A fine show you ve found for yourselves! (179). Katerina laments about the show that Marmeladov s death has become. She is frustrated that a room full of spectators that she has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

DiLorenzo completely shatters the illusion of the 16th President as the liberator of the slaves. DiLorenzo provides convincing evidence for Lincoln s overt racism as expressed in his documented views on racial supremacy as stated in his desire to colonize all American blacks outside the United States (p. 4); Lincoln s views were matched by the majority in the North who used such tools as state constitutional amendments to prohibit the emigration of black people into Northern states like Lincoln s home of Illinois (p. 4); and that the Presidents war which killed 620, 000 Americans and destroyed 40% of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... DiLorenzo shows that Lincoln s entire agenda was focused on advancing these three goals. Many southern states believed with the coming of Lincoln into the White House he would push for his agenda of increased federal government spending and control. So when Lincoln suspended the writ of Habeas corpus in order to arrest those accused of treason, the Peace Democrats had more ammunition against the president. There was much controversy as to whether the president had the power to suspend habaes corpus, and it was argued that only Congress had that right. The writ of habeas corpus protects people from arbitrary arrest and detainment. The power to do so was both that of the legislative branch as well as the judicial branch. It was unclear whether the Philadelphia convention placed it in Article I, just to identify it or define it as a legislative function. Either way, Lincoln did so, and the suspension of the writ of Habeas corpus brought on thousands of arbitrary arrests. Many of those who were arrested were spies, foreigners and smugglers. The question is: Did Lincoln go too far and unlawfully exercise his executive powers to manipulate constitutional limits? • 12. Childrens Health Insurance Program Improving Children s Health Insurance Program through Health Policy Children s health correlates to the health of the nation. The health of a child is a direct factor of adult health, productivity, and stability. If a nation has high morbidity and mortality rates for children, it will negatively impact that society s growth and development. It is imperative that children have health insurance and access to quality preventative and primary care, in order to foster healthy development into adulthood. Many children meet the requirements and eligibility for health care insurance; however, a large percentage of children are still left uninsured. This is problematic because if millions of children are uninsured, it increases their chances of illness and will have a negative impact on their growth and development. The policy needs to be re evaluated so that more children are insured and receive access to preventative and primary care. In the Go Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo s vivid imagination, the themes of growing up and self awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person narrative which encapsulates young Leo s fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the dawning of a new era, My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming true (Chapter 1. p. 28). Therefore, the adult narrator s ability to comment and reflect on his child self effectively emphasizes the naïve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and suspense throughout the novel, now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way (Chapter 1. p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of childhood and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he went away...the relationship between Ted and Marian would cease (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is able to analyse his feelings, I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and frightened (Chapter 16. p. 183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively conveys a sense of the adult narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner, whereas child narrator s naïve attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis, believing that he is solely to blame for the blossoming of the lovers affair, I had attacked them first (Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo s predicament as he possesses a common child like sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that he is merely facilitating the relationship between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees ... Beach Erosion Essay In December 2013, a massive tidal surge flooded 1,400 homes along the east coast of the U.K., which has managed to destroy and tumble some of these houses into the Atlantic Ocean. Over the next century, it is estimated that estates worth over 1 billion pounds will be lost due to the effects of coastal erosion. And within the next 20 years, over 800 estates will be lost. Coastal erosion is the reduction of material attached to the coastline by various natural or man led activities; coastal erosion leads to the landward retreat of the coast. Between 1929 and 1977, the shoreline remained relatively stable. However, after 1977, the groynes became increasingly ineffective, and the shoreline began eroding at much higher rates due to lack of maintenance. Today, the groynes are in poor shape and have occasionally been flanked at their landward ends(?). Several massive winter storms have since induced severe beach erosion and threatened to reverse the achievements of the protective measures put into place in Bethany Beach. Furthermore, a 147 year record of shoreline positions from 1850 1997 was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the groyne field at Bethany Beach and assess its impact on the adjacent beaches. The results indicate that the combination of the groyne field and beach fill have effectively stabilised the beach for nearly 50 years. However, the deterioration of the groynes and a series of large winter storms has resulted in increased beach erosion over the last 20 years in spite of multiple large scale beach nourishment projects. This analysis also indicates that the combination of methods would fail without the groynes receiving constant and efficient maintenance, regardless of whether the beach nourishment projects are continued or not.
