Different Religions In China
Buddhism! Taoism! Islam! thousands of religion are being shouted around in the cafeteria. No one is
surprised. Hardly anyone is the same religion in your school. That is not unusual in China. There are
so many different religions in China. Religion makes China because there are so many different
religions in China. The main three are Buddhism, Taoism, and Islam.
The first religion is Buddhism. Buddhists have three main things that they believe; The Four Noble
Truths, the Noble 8 fold Path, and The Five Precepts. The Four Noble Truth apply specifically to
Buddhist. The first Noble Truth: Buddhism explains that suffering can be avoided and you can be
happy. The second Noble Truth: If you crave, then you can not be truly happy. The Third

Wal Mart s Core Competencies Essay
There is a growing body of literature that recognises the importance of Resource Based View (RBV)
in strategic management. This paper attempts to identify Wal Mart s core competencies, applying RBV
literature such as VRIO framework with supporting evidence from Wal Mart Stores in 2003 case
study. RBV suggests that each firm acquires a collection of capabilities, which can be mobilised by
strategists to gain competitive advantage (McGee et al., 2005). In other words, a firm can be viewed as
a bundle of resources, which are the drivers of strategy and growth in a firm. When creating a unique
product, a firm also develops a unique competence (Mintzberg et al., 2009). Prahalad and Hamel
(1990) ascertained that three tests could be used to determine a core competence. Foremost, a core
competence should provide a promising access to a variety of markets. Second, a core competence
would make a substantial contribution to the end product in view of customers. Lastly, a core
competence should be unique, hard to imitate. In fulfilling the three tests, a resource would be a core
competence of a firm. Moreover, to be a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA), Barney (1991)
stated that a corporation s resources should consist of four characteristics: (i) valuable, in adding value
creating strategy to the product, not in the monetary sense, (ii) rare, in view of the business current
market position, (iii) imperfectly imitable and (iv) non substitutable. Furthermore, a firm s

Fiber Evidence Essay
Great post Sharon! Forensics and fiber evidence is the most intriguing part of the career to me. Crimes
are hard to get away with today because of fiber evidence. Everybody picks up fiber when entering a
room. I was recently reading about the 10 most fascinating facts about forensic science. People that
work in forensics mention that glitter particles are proven to be useful traces of evidence which can
dramatically affect the case. Most importantly, glitter is manufactured differently such as the shape,
thickness and refraction, which makes it easier to identify in the database. There are thousands of
commercial glitters that are linked with art crafts, cosmetics and decorations. In addition, glitter is
transferred from the body or clothes,

A Wrinkle Through Time Is The Story Of Meg Murry
A Wrinkle In Time is the story of Meg Murry, a high school girl who goes on an adventure between
dimensions with her younger brother Charles Wallace and friend Calvin to save her father from the
evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet. These evil forces are known as IT, and strive to
create uniformity and obedience without any resistance. At the end of the book the children have
saved Mr. Murry from imprisonment on Camazotz, but Charles Wallace was taken over by IT, the one
who had Mr. Murry, and was left behind. Meg is forced to go back to Camazotz alone to save her
brother, using something that she has the IT can t fight. Using her immense love for her brother she
frees him from the control of IT and all four of them make it home safely. I personally would have
prefered a more tragic ending, so that s exactly what I m going to be writing here. My ending diverges
from the original plot line after Meg lands on Camazotz alone to save Charles Wallace: Meg was
standing breathlessly on the same hill that she had landed on the first time she came to Camazotz. She
looked around, and after realizing that she was truly alone, felt dread pool in her stomach. The
unforgettable voice of Mrs. Which still echoed in her ears. Mmyy ggifftt fforr yyou iss yyourr onlly

How Did Edgar Allan Poe s Life Impact His Writing
Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe died in 1849 yet people still talk about his writing today. Poe s life
impacted his writing in many ways so his poems and stories are always very touching. He had so
many things happen in his life that inspired him to make his writing good and meaningful. Love, death
and alcoholism were all very meaningful in different ways to him. These things in his life impacted his
writing and also made his writing very intriguing. Edgars love for certain people was stronger than
anything. He loved his 2 mothers very much, one being his real mother and the other being his
adoptive mother. He did not have a very good connection with men as well as he did with women
because his mothers taught him everything and raised him to be the man he was. A lot of his stories
and poems were in memory of is mothers. Poe also had a very very strong love for his wife Virginia.
Virginia was very young but at the time age did not matter. The way that Poe explains his love for her
is a very unique and special way. Unfortunately Poe s mother s and his wife Virginia passed away.
Love lasts after death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Almost every story and every poem of Poe s had something to do with death. The reason being is he
had dealt with so much death especially of loved ones in his life that it became a part of his life story.
He lost most of his loved ones due to tuberculosis. Both of his mothers and his wife passed away due
to this disease. Death kind of became a mystery to Poe because it happened so often to the ones he
loved. Death was always kind of dark and his stories and poems took place in december at midnight.
December is the darkest month if the year and midnight is the darkest time of night so that time of
year and day was just fir for death. Poe drank to take the pain away of these

The Controversy Between The Movie Troy And The Iliad
The Movie Troy has been one of the best Hollywood movies to be filmed. However, many historical
events that took place in the movie, and the Iliad can be questioned whether or not they are reliable,
creating controversy about the historical accuracy of the film. This essay will examine and evaluate
the evidence, and compare the movie with archeological evidence about the Trojan War. It will be
argued that the myth of Troy was altered while creating the epic movie, Troy, to make it more
attractive for the audience. I will begin by introducing the source of the movie s storyline. Then it is
going to evaluate the archeological evidence to uncover certain factors, such as whether or not Troy
actually existed. How big was Troy? Who attacked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Schliemann assumed that Troy was located in the North West of Turkey; he came to this conclusion
with the description given by Homer. When Schliemann arrived he attacked the mountain with pic
axes to get rid of all the debris, and to be able to see the hidden treasure underneath, Troy . One day he
found ruins of the pre historic city. Ramps guided to a gate. Schliemann found gold, and jewels that
Helen once wore, or so he thought. Decade s later archeologist Korfmann showed some interest on the
city of Troy. Korfmann realized that the jewels were more 1,000 years old coming to the conclusion
that Helen couldn t have worn those jewels because they were too old. Korfmann took a photo of the
landscape underneath with advanced technology, and found wide streets, towers and a gate. He
examined his evidence and came to the conclusion that the city was too small, and that the gates had
no way of closing allowing the enemy to walk right in. His reasoning made him believe that perhaps
this weren t the Trojan Walls, that there was more to Troy. Evidence suggested that Troy really did

History Of The Council Of Nicea
The Council of Nicea was held during the winter of 324 325 (Bingham 46). The main concern of this
council was the relationship between God the Father and God the Son, as well as the essence of the
Son (Bingham 47). It aimed to create a counter argument against the Arians in an attempt to end the
relationship dispute, defend the trinity, and bring unity to the church. This council condemned Arius
and produced an anti Arian creed, the Creed of Nicea , but this council did not end disputes (Lane 29).
The creation of a creed, the Creed of Nicea, did have a significant impact, however. A creed, meaning

Christian, on joining the church, as part of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this creed, Jesus Christ the Son was affirmed to be both fully God and fully man (Lane 41) and
united equally with God. During 451, the Council of Chalcedon was held (Bingham 51). Here, the
church leaders
reaffirmed their acceptance of the Nicene Creed as it then existed and made analytical distinctions
regarding the nature of Jesus Christ concerning the human and divine (Kerr 75).
[The] Chalcedonian Creed emphasizes the oneness of Christ s person and the distinction of his full
two natures, divine and human, in unity with each other (Bingham 54).This they referred to as the
Symbol of Chalcedon, and while it did not become popular due to its complexity, it did help describe
limits made in the church. This Chalcedonian definition was brought on by
Arianism, Apollinarianism, Nestorianism, and Eutycheanism (Kerr 75). Combined, these councils
defended against the controversial teachings and beliefs of
Arianism, which denied the full deity of Christ; Apollinarianism, which denied the full humanity of
Christ; Nestorianism, which denied the union of the two natures;

The Pros And Cons Of Vocational Education In High Schools
Worldwide, education, specifically in high schools, varies depending on the location. Some schools
focus on a vocational education, which helps students learn in relation to a particular career, while
others may focus on liberal arts, which emphasizes the importance of core subjects. Each has their
own unique pros and cons, but a vocational education proves to be more effective in preparing
students for the future, providing them with more opportunities, hands on experiences, and a direct
path to the career of their choice. Vocational education is generally provided in stand alone schools or
as additional classes in liberal arts schools. The vocations that students are prepared for may include
medicine, law, nursing, mechanics, and even engineering or business. One major benefit of this early
exposure to a wide range of professions may be that students have a better idea as to what career may
be right for them in the future, rather than not have any idea by the time college rolls around. This is
becoming increasingly important, as in many public schools around the countries, which typically
provide a liberal arts education, vocational classes are being cut back due to budget cuts. By having an
idea of what they want to do, students can begin their studies while still in high school, and once in
college, know what courses to take that will contribute directly to their major. Vocational programs
also help to express and expand ideas in relation to real world topics. (Anyon,

Dream Of The Rood
A poem is a piece or writing that joins nature of speech that almost always is rhythmical,
metaphorical, and exhibits formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure . I think this is a
poem it uses these elements throughout the story. Instead of using the simple word Christ, the poet
calls Jesus the young hero and the warrior. The poet avoids mentioning Christ s inability to shoulder
the weight of the cross. This departure from biblical accounts of the crucifixion was also found in
medieval art. Presenting Christ as a warrior impregnable to fatigue and weakness, the poet shows that
Christ was an ultimate hero. The The Dream of the Rood s description of Christ s burial also reflects
the unique image of Christ in medieval times. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no
one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby,
they laid Jesus there. The dream vision uses strong images of Christ in order to reach members of the
Anglo Saxon warrior culture, who valued strength above humility. This may have been a deliberate
strategy to convert pagans to Christianity. It also reflects how the image of Jesus was adapted to suit
different cultures. What makes this such a highly regarded literary text? The Dream of the Rood is
seen as one of the finest short religious poems in the Old English period. The poem has been the
subject of literary and historical study for generations and different people has seen it different ways.
The Dream of the Rood also provides a valuable window into early Christian England. The poem was
first discovered on the Ruthwell Cross, a large stone carving dating to the early eighteenth century.
Eighteen verses of The Dream of the Rood were carved into the cross in the runic lettering. This poem
is one of the few surviving pieces of Anglo Saxon

History, Ethnography, And Eulogy Of Agricola
Written by the Roman historian Tacitus, the Agricola chronicles the life of his father in law Gnaeus
Julian Agricola while also covering the ethnography and history of ancient Britain and Rome. After
the assassination of Domitian in 96 AD, Tacitus used his freedom to publish his work. Tacitus
describes the character of his father in law, by showing how he grew up in a household that
encouraged the study of philosophy and attended to matters of state with honesty and competence.
Tacitus explores different themes in the book including the history, ethnography, and eulogy of
Agricola. Near the beginning of the book, the historian Tacitus admits his disdain towards Domitian s
rule and the profound effect Domitian had on the Roman Empire. Tacitus claims that for fifteen years,
men fell victim to the cruelty of the emperor. He contrasts Nerva and Trajan, the next two emperors,
with their predecessor by stating that Nerva harmonized the old discord between autocracy and
freedom, and Trajan enriched the happiness of our times. Tacitus does not try to hide his contempt
towards Domitian, but he does not dwell on it for very long in the story. During the reign of Domitian,
Agricola has been the most important general involved in the conquest of a great part of Britain.
During his time as a general, his commendable characteristics began to unveil. Over the course of
seven years, the Romans began subjecting the native people of Britain to foreign rule. Tacitus goes

If you choose to drive while under the influence of alcohol, you put yourself and others at risk. Such a

Regardless of whether or not you stayed at the scene of the accident, you are still fully responsible for

Thematic Transformation In Pixar s Up
Thematic Transformation in Up Released on May 29, 2009, Pixar s Up made its debut onto the big
screen, and created an entertaining viewing for a wide ranged audience. With the directorship of Pete
Docter and Bob Peterson, the team was able to create an animation picture, and bring it to life with the
music and help of composer Michael Giacchino. Throughout the course of the feature film, the
development of multiple new adventures, despite the positive and negative circumstances, take place
in the protagonist s life. In order to accommodate the diverse potential of the theme, Michael
Giacchino created a musical arrangement that, for the most part, would mold itself in order to suit the
particular action that the characters in the movie would be experiencing. This particular leitmotif is
introduced to us in the beginning when Carl, and his wife, Elli begin their lives together merrily,

Analysis Of National Lampoon s Big Five
National Lampoon s Christmas Vacation details the crazy escapades of the Griswold family as they
navigate the arrival of family, endure grouchy bosses, and struggle to create the perfect family
Christmas. The family patriarch, Clark Griswold, is the main protagonist and demonstrates a variety of
interesting psychological characteristics conducive to analysis. This paper assesses Clark from a trait
perspective, focusing on his lack of conscientiousness, and a non trait, psychoanalytic perspective, by
addressing how Clark regresses as a defense mechanism in response to tension and anxiety inducing
situations throughout the movie. One salient aspect of Clark s personality that can be observed from a
trait perspective is his lack of conscientiousness. The Big Five was established to create a standardized
list of essential traits to explain how/why individuals are both similar and different in personality. The
journey to establish the Big Five began with the Lexical Hypothesis, which took 17,953 adjectives and
consolidated them to 4,500 enduring psychological traits, which were whittled to 35 clusters of
personality, with a final factor analysis leading to the Big Five traits known today. Subsequent analysis
and repeated testing has consistently yielded the same five traits: extraversion, agreeableness,
conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. The Big Five fall on a larger spectrum
that includes metatraits, as well as aspects and facets of

How Does Lucy Pevensie Discover Narnia
C.S. Lewis s portrayal of the land Narnia as the character Lucy Pevensie discovers another world in
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe serve as an example of J.R.R
Tolkien s claim of the greatest desire: escape from reality. Any primordial desire a human has that they
cannot achieve is the starting point of a journey. The first view of Narnia suggests a winter
wonderland; however, the reason for why it is winter will be later explained in the story. C.S. Lewis
formulates the order at which each of the Pevensie children discovers Narnia. Lucy is the first to come
across the other world simply by wondering around the house. She is the youngest and her curiosity
leads her into discovering another world. However, after her venturing in Narnia and informing her
siblings of what lies beyond the wardrobe; she is told that it was all her imagination. She could travel

Two of the possibilities are those that are not in her character to do, so all that is left is the third
possibility: the truth. The reader can also interpret that there is a possibility that Professor Kirke has
also discovered Narnia; however, neither Peter or Susan take that possibility into consideration. The
two elder children s disbelief of their sister s explanation suggests another connection between
children and fairy tales from Tolkien s point of view. The claim from Tolkien s The Tolkien Reader
justifies Lucy s claim of Narnia being real as he specifies Children s knowledge of the world is often
so small that they cannot judge, off hand and without help, between the fantastic, the strange (that is

Ezra Pound Essay

U.S Literature
June 19th, 2015
A life of Ezra Pound Ezra Pound was a highly controversial poet in modern literature. Although he
was attributed for enabling modernism movement in American literature, he was also criticized for his
aesthetic and political views. With the enthusiasm for poetry, Pound filled most of his life with poetry.
Pound was a very passionate poet. He insisted on knowing more about poetry than anyone else do. In
his article How I Began, Pound claimed that he was resolved to know more about poetry than any man
living. Therefore, in order to accomplish his goal, he settled in London and built his reputation as a
member of the literary avant garde. He was renowned for his enthusiastic advocacy of contemporary
works.

In 1908, in Venice, Pound published his first poetry book A Lume Spento. He adopted dramatic
monologue and reflected spiritualism in the poetry. It was evaluated as original, poetic and passionate.
Pound s first major critical work, The Spirit of Romance was published in 1910, in London. It was a
literary criticism dealing with a variety of European literature. His work was regarded as the best critic
of poetry in some way to some writers. Moreover, in 1912, he starts to develop the field of Imagism,
which he later becomes famous for. With his passion for classic Chinese and Japanese poems, he
emphasized economy of words and concrete and direct description after thorough observation.
Another masterpiece of Ezra s is The Cantos. It was an unfinished 120 section poem when Ezra died.
The Cantos took almost his lifetime. He was working on it from 1915 to 1962. The Cantos was unique
in its style, in that it involved Chinese characters and other European languages other than English. Its
contents and style made itself one of the most significant works of modernist poetry in the 20th

Evolution Of The Baseball Bat
The evolution of the baseball bat dates back to when baseball was a growing sport. The first wood bats
cannot be compared with today s wood bats, and the BESR bats of the past cannot be compared with
the modern BBCOR bats. The first wood baseball bats were considered sticks because they did not
have a lot of pop, which is how hard the ball bounces off of the bat. As the wood bat progressed, the
ball began to fly farther and travel faster. This change in wood baseball bats can be related to the
change in metal bats. When metal bats were first introduced, they were considered inferior to wood
bats until the new and improved BESR bats were introduced. These bats had more pop than ever
before, and were considered dangerous. Because of this danger, the BBCOR bats had to be introduced
in 2011. Because of the major advances in technology, bat manufacturers are able to tune the bats to
the BBCOR certifiable level. The introduction of BBCOR bats into college and high school baseball
has moved the game in a positive direction by making baseball more realistic, creating a safer game,
and making it easier to project a player s future.
First of all, baseball bats come in many different shapes and sizes for all levels of play. The youth
baseball bats have a different level of pop than the adult version of the baseball bats. For instance, the
youth baseball bats have a pop level of 1.15, and the adult versions of the bats have a pop level of .50.
When a ball hits the barrel of any bat, it

The Physician-Paternalistic Relationship
In our society and classrooms, more often than not, it is argued that when a physician and their patient
have a paternalistic relationship, it is deemed unacceptable and needs to be addressed. However,
Komrad argues that a paternalistic relationship can actually be a beneficial factor between a physician
and their patient. Komrad creates the concept of a limited paternalism where it preserves an individual
s freedom as much as possible in the hope of eventually broadening it (42). One of the main
components of this paternalism is acknowledging that from the very beginning of a physician patient
relationship, it is an asymmetrical relationship because of the patient s already diminished autonomy.

Environmental Factors Of The Automotive Industry
Introduction Automobile usage has increased in America and elsewhere in the world. In a research
done by Sutherland, J., et al. (2004) The US has a contributed to 200 million passengers in cars and
light truck over the past few years. Further in 1990, studies showed that US cars increased six times
faster than human population. The leaders in the automotive industry must adopt some key elements
to ensure success in this fast moving environment. They must invest in knowing their markets,
building brands, adapting product strategies and taking long term view on their goals and objectives.
This paper outlines some of the key factors which should be considered. Environmental factors
automotive designers and engineers have always said the main threats in the American Automotive
industry are the environmental factors such as fuel economy and the clean air regulations. Automotive
Emission posed different problems than manufacturing discharges such as coal smoke. Increased
fossil fuel emission has resulted from the million car increase. Irritation smog, which is comprised of
carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, sulfur oxide and other various chemical mixtures are cited in major
cities such as Los Angeles. These auto emissions are also said to cause headaches, visual pollutions,
contribute to lung cancers and other respiratory disease. In the end, the engineers have designed cars
that are better environmental performers, cost effective and fuel efficient to reduce the environmental

I Am A Taiwanese American
Speaking of unique aspects about me as an individual, I would say that nothing can be more valuable
and meaningful than my international experiences. My academic background, academic discipline and
my personality are in fact closely related because of these valued experiences; they allowed me to
learn and to explore various cultures, to expand and to broaden my knowledge and vision beyond
mediocrity, to form and to shape my personality and most importantly to know who I am and who I
want to be.
First of all, I am a Taiwanese American from Dallas, but I ve also been raised in several different
places than where I come from, including China, Spain and the UK. Having lived in these places made
me both culturally and socially diverse. On one hand, I ve experienced different educational systems,
food, languages and knowledge about different ways of living; on the other hand, I ve learned how to
quickly adjust into new environments and thus interact with people from all over the world.
Among my international experiences, I especially value the two month study abroad in Spain. I chose
to go there because of my interest in Spanish language and culture that was originally developed
through a four week Spanish beginner workshop during the summer break prior to my study abroad
trip. In Spain, I lived mainly in Salamanca, a small old city in northwestern Spain, which was declared
as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to my parents, who had the confidence and trust to let me

question such ideologies. In the Heart of Darkness, Marlow explores the brutality that lies within the
endless inescapable power that is associated with imperialism. He sees past the materialistic aspects of
wealth and interprets the actual reality. This is especially clear when Marlow expresses that They were
dying slowly it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, and they were nothing
earthly now nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish
gloom. (Conrad 31). Marlow recognizes that the slaves casted in chains were not of any threat nor
were they dangerous criminals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, his experience in the Congo made him feel that the entire journey was like a weary
pilgrimage amongst hints of nightmares (Conrad 79). Pilgrimage may sound light filled and blessed
with great intentions. However, the goal itself is not so righteous. It is more of an act of robbery,
violence, greed, and power than nobility. Whereas, In Brave New World, John the savage is a white
male who is set aside from both Civilization and the savage reservations. He was born from an actual
womb, which is prohibited by the state, but is also not physically similar to the those in the savage
reservations; therefore, he is excluded by both parties. When Bernard exposes John to the world state,
John feels a sense of disconnection which later drives him into utter madness. For instance, When
Helmholtz and Bernard find John in the bathroom throwing up, they hear John utter that he ate
civilization (Huxley 213) . Civilization had poisoned him; thus he cannot stand the inhume customs
that the new world offers. Although he despised the savage reservations, he misses the ability to act
human. John is left with the hope to recapture everything that civilization no longer has to offer,
including religion, actual

Theme Of Sunday In The Park By Bel Kaufman
Themes of Sunday in the Park The short story Sunday in the Park by Bel Kaufman contains many
different themes. A theme presented in this story is how society expects certain behaviors on the roles
men have. People use those stereotypes to define strangers when they walk by, but are they always
true? In the story, there are two different fathers. The first man, known as Morton or Larry s father, is
described city pale and cooped up all week inside the gray factory like university . Morton is a
university professor, and in stereotype, society expects a professor to be intelligent, polite, and
someone to respect. Morton contributes to the themes on the roles of men and their behaviors. The
role of being a university professor appears when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is known right away to be an intimidating character when he spits on the ground and does not look
at Larry s mother when she speaks. Society would think that he is intimidating, large, unlikable, and
never to be messed with. When Larry s mother tells Joe to stop throwing sand at Larry, Joe s father
encourages Joe to continue. Joe s father defines the themes on the roles of men and behaviors. Being
completely different from Morton, Joe s father can be presented as a stereotypical man. He obviously
knows how to stand up for himself and earn the best for him and his son. He does not back down like
Morton and immediately gains what he has fought for with his actions. Just by slowly looking over
Morton from head to foot and the way he speaks to Morton, Joe s father fits the stereotype of men
perfectly. His behaviors, such as his body language, the way he speaks, and his reasoning indicate he
is exactly what he looks

Aesthetic Devices In About A Boy By Nick Hornby
Analysis of Aesthetic devices in About a Boy
About a boy, written in 1998 by Nick Hornby explores the themes of mental health, 1990 s culture and
family through the friendship of two characters; Will, a thirty six year old bachelor and Marcus, A 12
year old outcast. In about a boy, the author has used a range of aesthetic devices that shape character
representation. An Aesthetic device is an element that authors intentionally use to create
intellectual/emotional responses in their novel. This analytical essay will explore how Nick Hornby
has used irony, point of view and stream of consciousness to shape character representation.
Irony is a technique that is used (through a character or plot development) to convey an intention or
attitude opposite to what is literally stated. In essence, irony is humour based on opposites and
contradiction. It is supposed to make the reader laugh due to the mismatched characteristics of specific
situations. About a Boy by Nick Hornby explores significant issues through the use of humour.
Techniques such as Irony, ridiculous situations and vivid imagery encourage the audience to laugh
while simultaneously being challenged to think about serious issues such as mental health, bullying
and relationships. This is meant to elicit an emotional response within the reader. An example of irony
in About A Boy is the Dead duck scene, where the humour of Marcus killing a duck with a loaf of
bread foreshadows the solemn event of Fiona s Attempted suicide. The initial humour of Marcus
killing the duck is slapstick. This is evident when the text states Marcus couldn t believe it. A dead
duck. Ok, he tried to hit it with a piece of sandwich and when will says that s not a sandwich, that s a
bloody French loaf. No wonder it keeled over. These two humorous statements contrast with Fiona s
attempted suicide. The dead duck scene combined with Fiona s attempted suicide encourage the reader
to reflect on the seriousness of mental health, as this event is unexpected after the previous (dead
duck) situation.
Point of view is a literary device used to depict the perceptions and opinions of different characters.
Essentially, the point of view allows readers to form a relationship and

The Concert I Will Be Reviewing Performed By Gregory Sauer
The concert I will be reviewing was performed by Gregory Sauer (cello) and Eric Jenkins (piano) as
part of the UTRGV Patron of the Arts Guest Artist Series, which began at 7:30 PM on Monday,
October 3, 2016 in the TSC Arts Center Performance Hall. This well rounded program included
modern works from the 20th Century as well as works of the Late Romantic and Baroque eras. Sauer s
style and expression varied according to the piece he was performing; however, the principle elements
of his virtuosity remained unaltered throughout Monday night s performance. These foundational
practices are what made each articulation and individual piece not only well understood, but (and
more importantly) consistent.
Before a performance, the concert hall is a convivial atmosphere where patrons catch up and music
students engage in discussing the inside scoop around campus, all unbeknownst of the (not so) subtle
preparation taking place on stage; Monday night was no exception. Following the initial applaud,
Gregory Sauer sat in his chair, positioned his Cello and began playing Cassadó s Suite for Solo Cello .
Typically, I would have sat back and enjoyed the program, but having read up on the instrument and
the positioning of the body in respect to the instrument, I immediately noticed the inclination of Sauer
s cello toward the right side of his body as well as the loose position of his right hand. I kept track of
this positioning throughout the concert, but there were other consistencies

One White Teacher s Struggle For Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
Race, Gender, Class, and ethnicity are the fabrics that form a Multicultural Society. As a teacher, it is
important to think about my students various cultures and influences their cultures possess over their
learning. After all, students are taught within the context of culture. Culture is what we teach whether
it is explicit or institutional. Culture is integral to learning, considering culture is dependent on
education for its survival. Culture is transferred from one generation to the next using informal or
formal education (Convertino, Levinson, Gonzalez 27). As teachers, we should ensure our instruction
is relevant to our students, otherwise they will lose interest, and then, they will never learn (Banks
2013). So, teachers should approach their students within a culturally relevant pedagogy. ... Show

Throughout the case study, Andrea struggled forming a connection with her students families. Mainly
because she regards her African American students families with a lot of prejudice. She generalizes
there are a lot of problems in these families and education is not stressed (Hyland 105). She goes on to
say she cannot relate to some students families as she came from a normal family. Hence, she believes
her students families are abnormal. Although families have less of an influence on my students as they
are adults and some do not have families of their own, I would never make a generalization like
Andreas. Her kind of ethnocentric view creates

Essay on Alternate Ending to Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis
As soon as the Samsa s returned to their flat, the family reminisces of the trials and ordeals which they
were forced to endure upon their Gregor s revolting transformation. Subsequent to discussing the
matter the Samsa s felt they could each hover above ground from the amount of anxiety which had
been lifted from their shoulders. The Samsa s decide they should clean their home and dispose of
anything that brings the thought of Gregor to their minds. Mr. Samsa consumed with anger and disgust
does not dare to go inside of Gregor s dormitory. When the time comes however, to re arrange what
used to belong to their son, Gregor s mother and sister enter the room. The room is dark and
melancholy, corners cannot be seen and the only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After that a hand pops out of the sheet attempting to nail the floor in extreme anxiety, attempting to
latch on the floor with prematurely grown fingernails. The second hand creeps out equally doing the
same both arms fumbling about due to the slimy fluid from inside the corpse. Upon slipping the
mystifying figure collapses on the side of his face and cries out in pain, What has happened to me! He
screams. Instantly Mrs. Samsa recognizes that tone as her own, it is her son. With all fear abolished
from her body she runs to help him and attempts to relieve him from his pain, both forces work
chaotically against each other. Once up Gregor takes hold of the sheet in which he perished in, and
with it conceals his privates. The two women stare in astonishment at one s son and the other s
brother.
The plans for a new dwelling for the Samsa s have been postponed, once more due to Gregor s
condition, his father is not pleased. As days pass Gregor dwells in his bed complaining of soreness
every time he moves about. For the past few days all Gregor does is gorge down food and sleep an
unheard of amount of hours. A week later Gregor decides to get up from his bed, he enters the kitchen
and he finds no servant, but instead his sister Grete, who before departing for work makes him
something to eat. She still works as a salesgirl, nothing had changed in the Samsa s residence, only
Gregor s exterior. He pulls up a

Sao Paulo
Good Day Mr. Brown, You recently had asked me to find the risk assessment about Sao Paulo and this
is what I have found. I believe you and the rest of my co workers will enjoy it there but there are
certain places in Sao Paulo that are still dangerous especially in the day time while if you and the
Thomson Reuters team travel to the Central areas in Sao Paulo it is very dangerous at night. I needed
to inform you that the crime rates have decreased since 2011 but the level of crime is very high
calculating to 86.30%, also armed robberies are very common. Crime does indeed continues to be the
ultimate threats to visitors. The Central Sao Paolo is safe in the day time but be aware that
pickpocketing often happens at Praca de Se when you are either ... Show more content on

Every year, natural disasters kill people. They have a few dangerous insects found In the Amazon and
health hazards, can mostly come from mosquitoes. The flood watch really occurs when the rain is
pouring extremely heavy causing mudslides, falling trees, swollen rivers, and hills collapsing due to
already saturated soil making houses and buildings unstable to stand still. Sao Paolo have different
alternatives such as using the trains, buses, taxis, or subways to get around. The roads aren t very safe
to drive on Sao Paolo. Taxis are very cheap but to avoid getting anything personal taken from you
have your windows wind up. There are 3 main bus terminals in Sao Paulo which are Terminal
Rodoviario do Tiete, Rodoviario da Barra Funda and Rodoviario de Jabaqara. Buses would be more
accessible, a little safer and prices stay the same because if you take the subway or even the train it
closes at midnight during the week and 1 am on Saturdays. There are three major airports in Sao Paolo
which are Guarulhos International (GRU) and Viracopos (IATA:VCP or CPQ) both airports travel to
domestic and international areas while Congonhas (CGH) only has medium and short haul flights. The
best two places to stay are the Sao Paolo Lodge Business Hostel and Mercure Sao Paolo Jardins Hotel.
It is very close to all 3 airports both driving and taking the train. Mr. Brown do remember when
staying at the hotel to place your personal belongings into the safe and not to not leave it with the
receptionist. My biggest concern while in Sao Paolo to avoid getting sick or getting any dengue fever
is watching the food you eat and the water or liquids you drink. Sao Paolo is a great city but please
take precaution traveling at night by yourself or even having valuables on you in the day

Julius Caesar Betrayal Essay
Betrayal in Julius Caesar William Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar has many themes lied
within its script. One theme in particular sticks out throughout the play and, that theme can be tied to
three specific characters. William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar presents the timeless theme of betrayal
can ultimately lead to absurdity. First, the first betrayal towards Caesar triggers the chaos among the
men in Julius Caesar. Next, Mark Antony s betrayal towards the Senate boosts the illogicality up to a
whole new level. Lastly, the betrayal within the main characters conclusively ends most of the chaos
and the play. Now that the structure for how betrayal is tied to the characters is laid out, now it s time
to state how all that can tie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, once Cassius kills himself, the men begin to grieve. When Cassius commits suicide, which is his
betrayal to himself, the men begin to settle their tomfoolery. Due to the men s betrayal to one another
during their war, this leads to a misunderstanding, which ultimately led to Cassius death. Second, once
Portia commits suicide, this eases Brutus motivation for betrayal because of his wife s death. Even if
Brutus brushes off her death, it really was one of the assets that drove him off the deep end. Portia s
death goes hand in hand with Brutus which ultimately ended the men acting so absurd. Lastly, due to
Brutus suicide, this ends all the absurdity amongst the men. Once Brutus runs on his sword this sets
the final peace, mainly because there is no one else to betray. This example clearly states how betrayal
leads to complete chaos, once there is no one else to betray there s finally peace. In conclusion, the
betrayal that had happened amongst the men and Romans (suicide) in the play was what conclusively
ended most of the chaos. With self betrayal being represented with suicide, after a good amount of
characters commit suicide, there isn t anyone else to betray. So this ultimately ends the

That is not unusual in China. There are so many different religions in China. Religion makes China because there are so many different religions in China. Buddhists have three main things that they believe; The Four Noble Truths, the Noble 8 fold Path, and The Five Precepts. The Four Noble Truth apply specifically to Buddhist. The first Noble Truth: Buddhism explains that suffering can be avoided and you can be happy. The second Noble Truth: If you crave, then you can not be truly happy. The Third ... • 3. Wal Mart s Core Competencies Essay There is a growing body of literature that recognises the importance of Resource Based View (RBV) in strategic management. This paper attempts to identify Wal Mart s core competencies, applying RBV literature such as VRIO framework with supporting evidence from Wal Mart Stores in 2003 case study. RBV suggests that each firm acquires a collection of capabilities, which can be mobilised by strategists to gain competitive advantage (McGee et al., 2005). In other words, a firm can be viewed as a bundle of resources, which are the drivers of strategy and growth in a firm. When creating a unique product, a firm also develops a unique competence (Mintzberg et al., 2009). Prahalad and Hamel (1990) ascertained that three tests could be used to determine a core competence. Foremost, a core competence should provide a promising access to a variety of markets. Second, a core competence would make a substantial contribution to the end product in view of customers. Lastly, a core competence should be unique, hard to imitate. In fulfilling the three tests, a resource would be a core competence of a firm. Moreover, to be a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA), Barney (1991) stated that a corporation s resources should consist of four characteristics: (i) valuable, in adding value creating strategy to the product, not in the monetary sense, (ii) rare, in view of the business current market position, (iii) imperfectly imitable and (iv) non substitutable. Furthermore, a firm s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Everybody picks up fiber when entering a room. I was recently reading about the 10 most fascinating facts about forensic science. People that work in forensics mention that glitter particles are proven to be useful traces of evidence which can dramatically affect the case. Most importantly, glitter is manufactured differently such as the shape, thickness and refraction, which makes it easier to identify in the database. There are thousands of commercial glitters that are linked with art crafts, cosmetics and decorations. In addition, glitter is transferred from the body or clothes, ... • 5. A Wrinkle Through Time Is The Story Of Meg Murry A Wrinkle In Time is the story of Meg Murry, a high school girl who goes on an adventure between dimensions with her younger brother Charles Wallace and friend Calvin to save her father from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet. These evil forces are known as IT, and strive to create uniformity and obedience without any resistance. At the end of the book the children have saved Mr. Murry from imprisonment on Camazotz, but Charles Wallace was taken over by IT, the one who had Mr. Murry, and was left behind. Meg is forced to go back to Camazotz alone to save her brother, using something that she has the IT can t fight. Using her immense love for her brother she frees him from the control of IT and all four of them make it home safely. I personally would have prefered a more tragic ending, so that s exactly what I m going to be writing here. My ending diverges from the original plot line after Meg lands on Camazotz alone to save Charles Wallace: Meg was standing breathlessly on the same hill that she had landed on the first time she came to Camazotz. She looked around, and after realizing that she was truly alone, felt dread pool in her stomach. The unforgettable voice of Mrs. Which still echoed in her ears. • 6. How Did Edgar Allan Poe s Life Impact His Writing Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe died in 1849 yet people still talk about his writing today. Poe s life impacted his writing in many ways so his poems and stories are always very touching. He had so many things happen in his life that inspired him to make his writing good and meaningful. Love, death and alcoholism were all very meaningful in different ways to him. These things in his life impacted his writing and also made his writing very intriguing. Edgars love for certain people was stronger than anything. He loved his 2 mothers very much, one being his real mother and the other being his adoptive mother. He did not have a very good connection with men as well as he did with women because his mothers taught him everything and raised him to be the man he was. A lot of his stories and poems were in memory of is mothers. Poe also had a very very strong love for his wife Virginia. Virginia was very young but at the time age did not matter. The way that Poe explains his love for her is a very unique and special way. Unfortunately Poe s mother s and his wife Virginia passed away. Love lasts after death. ... The reason being is he had dealt with so much death especially of loved ones in his life that it became a part of his life story. He lost most of his loved ones due to tuberculosis. Both of his mothers and his wife passed away due to this disease. Death kind of became a mystery to Poe because it happened so often to the ones he loved. Death was always kind of dark and his stories and poems took place in december at midnight. December is the darkest month if the year and midnight is the darkest time of night so that time of year and day was just fir for death. Poe drank to take the pain away of these ... • 7. The Controversy Between The Movie Troy And The Iliad The Movie Troy has been one of the best Hollywood movies to be filmed. However, many historical events that took place in the movie, and the Iliad can be questioned whether or not they are reliable, creating controversy about the historical accuracy of the film. This essay will examine and evaluate the evidence, and compare the movie with archeological evidence about the Trojan War. It will be argued that the myth of Troy was altered while creating the epic movie, Troy, to make it more attractive for the audience. I will begin by introducing the source of the movie s storyline. Then it is going to evaluate the archeological evidence to uncover certain factors, such as whether or not Troy actually existed. How big was Troy? Who attacked ... When Schliemann arrived he attacked the mountain with pic axes to get rid of all the debris, and to be able to see the hidden treasure underneath, Troy . One day he found ruins of the pre historic city. Ramps guided to a gate. Schliemann found gold, and jewels that Helen once wore, or so he thought. Decade s later archeologist Korfmann showed some interest on the city of Troy. Korfmann realized that the jewels were more 1,000 years old coming to the conclusion that Helen couldn t have worn those jewels because they were too old. Korfmann took a photo of the landscape underneath with advanced technology, and found wide streets, towers and a gate. He examined his evidence and came to the conclusion that the city was too small, and that the gates had no way of closing allowing the enemy to walk right in. His reasoning made him believe that perhaps this weren t the Trojan Walls, that there was more to Troy. Evidence suggested that Troy really did ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. History Of The Council Of Nicea The Council of Nicea was held during the winter of 324 325 (Bingham 46). The main concern of this council was the relationship between God the Father and God the Son, as well as the essence of the Son (Bingham 47). It aimed to create a counter argument against the Arians in an attempt to end the relationship dispute, defend the trinity, and bring unity to the church. This council condemned Arius and produced an anti Arian creed, the Creed of Nicea , but this council did not end disputes (Lane 29). The creation of a creed, the Creed of Nicea, did have a significant impact, however. A creed, meaning I believe in Latin, can be used in many ways including a public statement on first becoming a Christian, on joining the church, as part of ... During 451, the Council of Chalcedon was held (Bingham 51). This Chalcedonian definition was brought on by Arianism, Apollinarianism, Nestorianism, and Eutycheanism (Kerr 75). • 9. The Pros And Cons Of Vocational Education In High Schools Worldwide, education, specifically in high schools, varies depending on the location. Some schools focus on a vocational education, which helps students learn in relation to a particular career, while others may focus on liberal arts, which emphasizes the importance of core subjects. Each has their own unique pros and cons, but a vocational education proves to be more effective in preparing students for the future, providing them with more opportunities, hands on experiences, and a direct path to the career of their choice. Vocational education is generally provided in stand alone schools or as additional classes in liberal arts schools. The vocations that students are prepared for may include medicine, law, nursing, mechanics, and even engineering or business. One major benefit of this early exposure to a wide range of professions may be that students have a better idea as to what career may be right for them in the future, rather than not have any idea by the time college rolls around. This is becoming increasingly important, as in many public schools around the countries, which typically provide a liberal arts education, vocational classes are being cut back due to budget cuts. By having an idea of what they want to do, students can begin their studies while still in high school, and once in college, know what courses to take that will contribute directly to their major. Vocational programs also help to express and expand ideas in relation to real world topics. (Anyon, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dream Of The Rood A poem is a piece or writing that joins nature of speech that almost always is rhythmical, metaphorical, and exhibits formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure . I think this is a poem it uses these elements throughout the story. Instead of using the simple word Christ, the poet calls Jesus the young hero and the warrior. The poet avoids mentioning Christ s inability to shoulder the weight of the cross. This departure from biblical accounts of the crucifixion was also found in medieval art. Presenting Christ as a warrior impregnable to fatigue and weakness, the poet shows that Christ was an ultimate hero. The The Dream of the Rood s description of Christ s burial also reflects the unique image of Christ in medieval times. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. The dream vision uses strong images of Christ in order to reach members of the Anglo Saxon warrior culture, who valued strength above humility. This may have been a deliberate strategy to convert pagans to Christianity. It also reflects how the image of Jesus was adapted to suit different cultures. What makes this such a highly regarded literary text? The Dream of the Rood is seen as one of the finest short religious poems in the Old English period. The poem has been the subject of literary and historical study for generations and different people has seen it different ways. The Dream of the Rood also provides a valuable window into early Christian England. The poem was first discovered on the Ruthwell Cross, a large stone carving dating to the early eighteenth century. • 11. History, Ethnography, And Eulogy Of Agricola Written by the Roman historian Tacitus, the Agricola chronicles the life of his father in law Gnaeus Julian Agricola while also covering the ethnography and history of ancient Britain and Rome. After the assassination of Domitian in 96 AD, Tacitus used his freedom to publish his work. Tacitus describes the character of his father in law, by showing how he grew up in a household that encouraged the study of philosophy and attended to matters of state with honesty and competence. Tacitus explores different themes in the book including the history, ethnography, and eulogy of Agricola. Near the beginning of the book, the historian Tacitus admits his disdain towards Domitian s rule and the profound effect Domitian had on the Roman Empire. Tacitus claims that for fifteen years, men fell victim to the cruelty of the emperor. He contrasts Nerva and Trajan, the next two emperors, with their predecessor by stating that Nerva harmonized the old discord between autocracy and freedom, and Trajan enriched the happiness of our times. Tacitus does not try to hide his contempt towards Domitian, but he does not dwell on it for very long in the story. During the reign of Domitian, Agricola has been the most important general involved in the conquest of a great part of Britain. During his time as a general, his commendable characteristics began to unveil. Over the course of seven years, the Romans began subjecting the native people of Britain to foreign rule. Throughout the course of the feature film, the development of multiple new adventures, despite the positive and negative circumstances, take place in the protagonist s life. In order to accommodate the diverse potential of the theme, Michael Giacchino created a musical arrangement that, for the most part, would mold itself in order to suit the particular action that the characters in the movie would be experiencing. Analysis Of National Lampoon s Big Five National Lampoon s Christmas Vacation details the crazy escapades of the Griswold family as they navigate the arrival of family, endure grouchy bosses, and struggle to create the perfect family Christmas. The family patriarch, Clark Griswold, is the main protagonist and demonstrates a variety of interesting psychological characteristics conducive to analysis. This paper assesses Clark from a trait perspective, focusing on his lack of conscientiousness, and a non trait, psychoanalytic perspective, by addressing how Clark regresses as a defense mechanism in response to tension and anxiety inducing situations throughout the movie. One salient aspect of Clark s personality that can be observed from a trait perspective is his lack of conscientiousness. The Big Five was established to create a standardized list of essential traits to explain how/why individuals are both similar and different in personality. The journey to establish the Big Five began with the Lexical Hypothesis, which took 17,953 adjectives and consolidated them to 4,500 enduring psychological traits, which were whittled to 35 clusters of personality, with a final factor analysis leading to the Big Five traits known today. Subsequent analysis and repeated testing has consistently yielded the same five traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. Any primordial desire a human has that they cannot achieve is the starting point of a journey. The first view of Narnia suggests a winter wonderland; however, the reason for why it is winter will be later explained in the story. C.S. Lewis formulates the order at which each of the Pevensie children discovers Narnia. Lucy is the first to come across the other world simply by wondering around the house. • 18. Evolution Of The Baseball Bat The evolution of the baseball bat dates back to when baseball was a growing sport. The first wood bats cannot be compared with today s wood bats, and the BESR bats of the past cannot be compared with the modern BBCOR bats. The first wood baseball bats were considered sticks because they did not have a lot of pop, which is how hard the ball bounces off of the bat. As the wood bat progressed, the ball began to fly farther and travel faster. This change in wood baseball bats can be related to the change in metal bats. When metal bats were first introduced, they were considered inferior to wood bats until the new and improved BESR bats were introduced. These bats had more pop than ever before, and were considered dangerous. Because of this danger, the BBCOR bats had to be introduced in 2011. Because of the major advances in technology, bat manufacturers are able to tune the bats to the BBCOR certifiable level. The introduction of BBCOR bats into college and high school baseball has moved the game in a positive direction by making baseball more realistic, creating a safer game, and making it easier to project a player s future. First of all, baseball bats come in many different shapes and sizes for all levels of play. The youth baseball bats have a different level of pop than the adult version of the baseball bats. For instance, the youth baseball bats have a pop level of 1.15, and the adult versions of the bats have a pop level of .50. When a ball hits the barrel of any bat, it ... • 19. The Physician-Paternalistic Relationship In our society and classrooms, more often than not, it is argued that when a physician and their patient have a paternalistic relationship, it is deemed unacceptable and needs to be addressed. However, Komrad argues that a paternalistic relationship can actually be a beneficial factor between a physician and their patient. Komrad creates the concept of a limited paternalism where it preserves an individual s freedom as much as possible in the hope of eventually broadening it (42). One of the main components of this paternalism is acknowledging that from the very beginning of a physician patient relationship, it is an asymmetrical relationship because of the patient s already diminished autonomy. My academic background, academic discipline and my personality are in fact closely related because of these valued experiences; they allowed me to learn and to explore various cultures, to expand and to broaden my knowledge and vision beyond mediocrity, to form and to shape my personality and most importantly to know who I am and who I want to be. First of all, I am a Taiwanese American from Dallas, but I ve also been raised in several different places than where I come from, including China, Spain and the UK. Having lived in these places made me both culturally and socially diverse. On one hand, I ve experienced different educational systems, food, languages and knowledge about different ways of living; on the other hand, I ve learned how to quickly adjust into new environments and thus interact with people from all over the world. Among my international experiences, I especially value the two month study abroad in Spain. I chose to go there because of my interest in Spanish language and culture that was originally developed through a four week Spanish beginner workshop during the summer break prior to my study abroad trip. In Spain, I lived mainly in Salamanca, a small old city in northwestern Spain, which was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the Heart of Darkness, Marlow explores the brutality that lies within the endless inescapable power that is associated with imperialism. Furthermore, his experience in the Congo made him feel that the entire journey was like a weary pilgrimage amongst hints of nightmares (Conrad 79). Pilgrimage may sound light filled and blessed with great intentions. However, the goal itself is not so righteous. It is more of an act of robbery, violence, greed, and power than nobility. Whereas, In Brave New World, John the savage is a white male who is set aside from both Civilization and the savage reservations. He was born from an actual womb, which is prohibited by the state, but is also not physically similar to the those in the savage reservations; therefore, he is excluded by both parties. When Bernard exposes John to the world state, John feels a sense of disconnection which later drives him into utter madness. For instance, When Helmholtz and Bernard find John in the bathroom throwing up, they hear John utter that he ate civilization (Huxley 213) . A theme presented in this story is how society expects certain behaviors on the roles men have. People use those stereotypes to define strangers when they walk by, but are they always true? In the story, there are two different fathers. The first man, known as Morton or Larry s father, is described city pale and cooped up all week inside the gray factory like university . • 26. Aesthetic Devices In About A Boy By Nick Hornby Analysis of Aesthetic devices in About a Boy About a boy, written in 1998 by Nick Hornby explores the themes of mental health, 1990 s culture and family through the friendship of two characters; Will, a thirty six year old bachelor and Marcus, A 12 year old outcast. In about a boy, the author has used a range of aesthetic devices that shape character representation. An Aesthetic device is an element that authors intentionally use to create intellectual/emotional responses in their novel. This analytical essay will explore how Nick Hornby has used irony, point of view and stream of consciousness to shape character representation. Irony is a technique that is used (through a character or plot development) to convey an intention or attitude opposite to what is literally stated. In essence, irony is humour based on opposites and contradiction. It is supposed to make the reader laugh due to the mismatched characteristics of specific situations. About a Boy by Nick Hornby explores significant issues through the use of humour. Techniques such as Irony, ridiculous situations and vivid imagery encourage the audience to laugh while simultaneously being challenged to think about serious issues such as mental health, bullying and relationships. This is meant to elicit an emotional response within the reader. An example of irony in About A Boy is the Dead duck scene, where the humour of Marcus killing a duck with a loaf of bread foreshadows the solemn event of Fiona s Attempted suicide. The initial humour of Marcus killing the duck is slapstick. This is evident when the text states Marcus couldn t believe it. A dead duck. Ok, he tried to hit it with a piece of sandwich and when will says that s not a sandwich, that s a bloody French loaf. No wonder it keeled over. These two humorous statements contrast with Fiona s attempted suicide. The dead duck scene combined with Fiona s attempted suicide encourage the reader to reflect on the seriousness of mental health, as this event is unexpected after the previous (dead duck) situation. Point of view is a literary device used to depict the perceptions and opinions of different characters. Essentially, the point of view allows readers to form a relationship and ... • 27. The Concert I Will Be Reviewing Performed By Gregory Sauer The concert I will be reviewing was performed by Gregory Sauer (cello) and Eric Jenkins (piano) as part of the UTRGV Patron of the Arts Guest Artist Series, which began at 7:30 PM on Monday, October 3, 2016 in the TSC Arts Center Performance Hall. This well rounded program included modern works from the 20th Century as well as works of the Late Romantic and Baroque eras. Sauer s style and expression varied according to the piece he was performing; however, the principle elements of his virtuosity remained unaltered throughout Monday night s performance. These foundational practices are what made each articulation and individual piece not only well understood, but (and more importantly) consistent. Before a performance, the concert hall is a convivial atmosphere where patrons catch up and music students engage in discussing the inside scoop around campus, all unbeknownst of the (not so) subtle preparation taking place on stage; Monday night was no exception. Following the initial applaud, Gregory Sauer sat in his chair, positioned his Cello and began playing Cassadó s Suite for Solo Cello . Typically, I would have sat back and enjoyed the program, but having read up on the instrument and the positioning of the body in respect to the instrument, I immediately noticed the inclination of Sauer s cello toward the right side of his body as well as the loose position of his right hand. I kept track of this positioning throughout the concert, but there were other consistencies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. One White Teacher s Struggle For Culturally Relevant Pedagogy Race, Gender, Class, and ethnicity are the fabrics that form a Multicultural Society. As a teacher, it is important to think about my students various cultures and influences their cultures possess over their learning. After all, students are taught within the context of culture. Culture is what we teach whether it is explicit or institutional. Culture is integral to learning, considering culture is dependent on education for its survival. Culture is transferred from one generation to the next using informal or formal education (Convertino, Levinson, Gonzalez 27). As teachers, we should ensure our instruction is relevant to our students, otherwise they will lose interest, and then, they will never learn (Banks 2013). So, teachers should approach their students within a culturally relevant pedagogy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One theme in particular sticks out throughout the play and, that theme can be tied to three specific characters. William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar presents the timeless theme of betrayal can ultimately lead to absurdity. First, the first betrayal towards Caesar triggers the chaos among the men in Julius Caesar. Next, Mark Antony s betrayal towards the Senate boosts the illogicality up to a whole new level. Second, once Portia commits suicide, this eases Brutus motivation for betrayal because of his wife s death. Even if Brutus brushes off her death, it really was one of the assets that drove him off the deep end. Portia s death goes hand in hand with Brutus which ultimately ended the men acting so absurd.
