Quentin Marregelman Analysis
Quentin Jacobsen was an un adventurous boy who lived a relatively unadventurous, boring life.
Living across the street was the complete opposite, Margo Roth Spiegelman. She was daring,
beautiful, and loved mystery and adventures. Quentin was used to admiring her amazing life from
afar, until one night a blue eyed girl in all black burst from the window. That girl was Margo Roth
Spiegelman herself. She dragged him out of bed and asked for him to drive her around town to get
revenge and go on an adventure . While out in the many places they went that night, Margo talks
about Paper Towns and how her town of Orlando, Florida was just a Paper Town. The following day,
it is discovered that Margo ran away. But this mysterious girl wasn t going ... Show more content on

When she leaves Orlando, she is running from the perfect image everyone, including Q, has created
for her. She is also getting away from paper towns and paper people in Orlando, even though she
herself could very easily be considered paper. As she gets closer to Agloe, and farther from Orlando,
she believes that she is getting farther and farther from her old paper self. But she doesn t know that as
she is becoming more real she is letting down people who saw her as paper by not being perfect.
Margo doesn t see herself as paper, she thinks of herself as real, just surrounded by all paper people.
But she soon realizes that all her peers and people around her aren t paper, and actually are real people
she doesn t know enough. It s then realized that Margo is the same as everyone else, she is equal to
everyone else around her, and is not the only real person amongst paper people. On some fundamental
level we find it difficult to understand that other people are human beings the same way we are. We
idealize them as gods or dismiss them as animals. (Green, 164) Paper Towns uses a lot of symbolism
to represent the feeling of emptiness and something being unrealistic. The paper towns are fake towns
that have no real meaning. Q realizes that the real version of Margo isn t his miracle in life because
Margo isn t everything that he had built her up to be. John Green uses symbolism throughout the novel
to demonstrate how one sees himself, outlooks on life, and ways of viewing other people in the

History of Nursing Profession
History of nursing profession Prior to the foundation of modern nursing, nuns and the military often
provided nursing like services. Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern nurses. she formed the
base for the first professional nursing philosophy. She saw the role of nursing as having charge of
somebody s health (Crisp amp;Taylor,2009) based on the knowledge of how to put the body in such a
state to be free of disease or to recover from disease (Crisp amp;Taylor,2009). The religious and
military roots of modern nursing remain in evidence today in many countries, for example in the
United Kingdom, senior female nurses are known as sisters. It was during time of war that a
significant development in nursing history arose when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Army Nursing Service (ANS) oversaw the work of the nurses starting in 1881. These military
nurses were sent overseas beginning with the First Boer War (often called Zulu War) from 1879 to
1881.[6] They were also dispatched to serve during the Egyptian Campaign in 1882 and the Sudan
War of 1883 to 1884. During the Sudan War members of the Army Nursing Service nursed in hospital
ships on the Nile as well as the Citadel in Cairo. Almost 2000 nurses served during the second Boer
War, the Anglo Boer War of 1899 to 1902, alongside nurses who were part of the colonial armies of
Australia, Canada and New Zealand. They served in tented field hospitals. 23 Army Nursing sisters
from Britain lost their lives from disease outbreaks. Sporadic progress was made on several
continents, where medical pioneers established formal nursing schools. But even as late as the 1870s,
women working in North American urban hospitals typically were untrained, working class, and
accorded lowly status by both the medical profession they supported and society at large . Nursing had
the same status in Great Britain and continental Europe before World War I. Hospital nursing schools
in the United States and Canada took the lead in applying Nightingale s model to their training
programmers. Standards of classroom and on the job training had risen sharply in the 1880s and
1890s, and along with them the expectation of decorous and professional conduct. By the beginning of

The Importance Of Democracy In Democracy
American democracy supply its citizens with the most freedom, the most opportunity, the greatest
success, and the most comfortable life. A high number of Americans have lost faith in their
democracy. In 1988, United States democratic party was 33%. In 2014, it decreased to 29%. For more
democratic to gain their faith, the democracy have to improve. The humanities can solve this problem
by starting with itself. Improving education, improving oneself as a human being, improving
healthcare and improving economics growth.
Education can help people participate in democracy in different ways, including providing them with
literacy and other skills to enable them to take action in political discussions and to be able to get
political information through the media easily. Education promotes good governance by giving
citizens the confidence and skills they need to become active members of their society and hold their
governments responsible, therefore we need more people in higher class occupations. Education
reduces poverty, help economic growth, leads to better health and promotes gender equality.
Everyone should come together to enhance themselves as a human being. This action is will be very
challenging, but possible. If everyone will take the time out to compliment themselves, stop making
excuses, let go of anger, practice forgiveness, be honest, be helpful, listen to others, be respectful,
educate themselves, and more, there will be massive number of civilized

The Story Of The Uva Campus Rape
Journalist are so focused on getting a hot story that they forget one of the most important principles of
journalism, which is the notion of objectivity. Objectivity is described, as an objective journalist is one
who is detached, neutral, impartial, and unbiased (Knowlton 45). When Rolling Stone had Steve Coll
and his crew investigate the story that was one of the first problems found in the story of the UVA
campus rape. Sabrina Rubin Erdely was in search of a college rape case that would show what it s like
to be on campus now (Coronel). When Erdely found a story she just went with it, she did not research
enough to make sure the story was credible. From the beginning of the whole process of the story she
already started off unbiased and not neutral to the true facts of the story.
A Journalist must be unbiased but they also have to check their sources to make sure they are credible.
To working journalist, the procedures of verification and attribution are as automatic as breathing in
and out. (Knowlton 56) This is another thing the Erdely and the Rolling Stone fact checker failed to
do. Erdely failed to follow up with her sources and make sure they were credible sources. Instead she
felt the student ( Jackie ) had this stamp of credibility because a university employee had connected
them (Coronel). Than as for the fact checker which job is to review a writer s story after it has been
drafted, to double check details like dates and physical description

Hybrid Vehicle Research Paper
Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Their Advantages
The HEV [Hybrid Electric Vehicle] concept goes back to 1905. On November 23 of that year,
American engineer H. Piper filed for a patent on a hybrid vehicle. Piper s design called for an electric
motor to augment a gasoline engine (1, pg 2) and thus, the HEV was born. Hybrid Electric Vehicles,
otherwise known as HEVs are vehicles that combine the internal combustion engine of a conventional
vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle (2).
In this day and age car manufactures are trying to out compete one another in terms of car features and
sales. Technology has come a long way since 1905 but the principle is still the same: to produce ...

Those who may doubt the potential for HEVs may ask: ?Why HEVs?? The Office of Transportation
Technologies makes the following points about HEVs:
?The practical benefits of HEVs include improved fuel economy and lower emissions compared to
conventional vehicles?Hybrids will never be true zero emission vehicles, however, because of their
internal combustion engine. But the first hybrids on the market will cut emissions of global warming
pollutants by a third to a half, and later models may cut emissions by even more?(2).
Although hybrid vehicles are not zero emission vehicles, they are a very good alternative to the
conventional vehicles that are on the road today. With the capability to have a higher fuel economy
and emit lower amounts of pollution, hybrids are strong contenders against such vehicles as SUVs
(sports utility vehicles).
Another advantage that HEVs have is that they are competitively priced with other vehicles on the
market today.
?The HEVs available for sale are very cost competitive with similar conventional vehicles. Any cost
premium that may be associated with HEVs of the future can be off set by overall fuel savings and
possible incentives?(2).
As a result of not having a very high price tag, in comparison with standard vehicles, HEVs are

The Audio Engineer
A vital part in the making of any professionally made album is the production and post production
process. These processes are the responsibility of audio engineers employed by record labels. The
engineers are responsible for the recording, mixing, and mastering of audio tracks. To do this,
engineers are trained with various technologies in the fields of multi track recording, outboard gear
and digital/analog workstations. With their knowledge and tools, engineers help the artists convey
their art as best as possible not only to themselves but also to the demographic they wish to express
their art to.
The job of the engineer can be best described as a presenter in a techno artistic field. The job requires
the technical capabilities and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to an interview of noted audio engineer Simon Kasprowicz what makes a good engineer
from a bad is totally subjective and depends upon individual desire because what may sound fantastic
to someone, others will find fault in (Kasprowicz, about.com).
When all of the tracks of a project have been recorded, assembled, and edited onto the digital audio
workstation or tape deck, the next step would be to individually mix the elements of their work in their
final edited forms. The mix down process occurs by routing the various tracks of a digital audio
workstation or tape based recorder through a hardware virtual mixing console to alter the overall
session s program, all which include getting relative level, spatial positioning, using equalizers, and
effects. Once these measures are taken care of, the engineer can then set up a rough mix of the song by
adjusting levels and the spatial pan positions. The producer who is mostly provides feedback to the
artist and the engineer during the session, listens to the mix and may ask the engineer to make specific
changes such as amplitude adjustments. Instruments in their isolated tracks are often soloed for
equalized changes to be made. The usual compression and limiting can be used in the mixing process
to make individual tracks sound fuller and more consistent

Ballet Slippers Research Paper
Ballet Slippers Culture is the overview of how a group of people live, their beliefs and moral system,
and basic things such as how they dress. Culture is subjective, no two people see it the same way. I
may see Scottish culture as a group of people who wear kilts and play bagpipes, but someone else may
think it involves red hair and haggis. Culture is often made up of stereotypes, for example: someone
may believe that Canadian culture is igloos, pet polar bears, apologizing, and saying eh after every
word. In reality Canadian culture from the perspective of someone living in it includes: different
religions, holding the door for someone behind you, and wearing a tuque in winter. There are multiple
layers of culture, the blanket term; usually referring to the country or main region in which you live.
Culture can then be broken down into many sub categories such as: ... Show more content on

Ballet started in Italian Renaissance, but spread through Europe and made it s way into North

start with basic ballet lessons. Ballet is becoming more popular again with the rise of competitive
dance. Television shows such as So You Think You Can Dance , and America s Got Talent showcase
many ballet dancers, and other dancers in mainstream media. Ballet is often considered boring
because of it s classical nature, but as boring or old fashioned it may seem it often is the basics for
most styles of dance. It is one of the most technically challenging, and ballerinas are some of the most
well rounded athletes. Famous actors such as Channing Tatum and Christian Bale took lessons in

Free Slides In The Music Industry
Drowned in Sound states that 95% of music downloads in 2008 were illegal. So what do artists
receive for all their hard work? The answer is that they receive close to nothing and their lack of
revenue from music downloads could very well lead to drastic changes in the music industry. Not only
do they receive little revenue, but they also need money to keep making music, and to support
themselves. I believe that music consumers should pay for their music rather than listen to it on free
apps or download it illegally.
To begin with, artists make so little money from free downloads, if they are even paid at all. Willie
Geist stated, Spotify has more than forty million regular users, over ten million paying ten dollars a

recorded music to the audience that artists no longer need a major label . While it s true that you can t
see it, he was definitely wrong in saying that it should be free. Artists work hard to make the music, it
is their lifestyle. People generally like music and if they want to listen to it then they should pay for it,
and if they don t want to pay for it maybe they shouldn t listen to it. Music is a satisfaction, like any
other form of entertainment in your household, so why shouldn t you pay for it. In reality, music does

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Packaging
ABSTRACT There have been different ways to package products for years. Having choices can make
it harder but understanding what you have and how it needs to be shipped can be beneficial. For non
retail packages there are three types of shipping containers, plastic based, paper based, and wood
based. In this paper I will go over the advantages and disadvantages of paper based container, plastic
based container and wood based container. As well as, compare all three to each other. Understanding
which one might be a most effective when shipping non retail packages.

Wooden crates are easy to prepare; whether from a set design or perhaps a customized design specs by
a customer.
Disadvantages
Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages of wood based crates for shipping. Wood needs to be
treated. The finished product when the crate is all put together is too heavy, requires lifting equipment
such as pallet jacks, forklifts or even cranes, they can even become a safety risk to employees
handling the crates because of splinters and concerns with handling to get inside. Wood also
sometimes has a smell to it that can be bad for the products that are inside. Wood has been used for
centuries for crafting. Wood based shipping containers are used to gather, store, ship and protect
consumer goods.
Paper based
As time changes, paper and paper based packaging have become key components in today society.
Communication, food, and consumer products are just a few of the things that are improved upon and
more easily accessible as a result of paper and paper based packaging (American Forest and Paper
Association, 2014).

Wings Macklemore Analysis
Reading Response 5 Title of text: Wings Text type: Song Author: Macklemore The song Wings by
Macklemore is about how people identify through the means of consumerism. It also discusses the
fleeting happiness that is intrinsically linked to the almighty power of the purchase. The song is based
on shoes, but it Macklemore aims to paint a broader picture of being a consumer by using his own
experiences of retail infused desire. In the music wings by Macklemore, he preaches against
consumerism in American culture. He uses the example of expensive Nike branded shoes to show the
effect consumerism has on citizens. He writes the song from his own perspective as a young boy and

They feel that the brand is the only way they can identify themselves. With this song I think
Macklemore is trying say that we need to dissect our attachment to brands and logos and the happiness
that is associated with the purchasing of these expensive brands. With this song I think he is trying to
take away the strong connection between bands and being cool . The section of lyrics in the song; my
friend Carlos brother got murdered for his fours, whoa Macklemore uses this metaphor to show how
Carlos brother got totally ripped apart by his peers because his basketball shoes weren t cool or the
right brand. We are so stuck in the world of consumerism and the need to buy things to be able to
relate with others. I can relate to this because on a daily basis I see people get judged by what they
wear and what the own (material goods) rather than them as a person. When Macklemore wrote this
song he hoped to spread awareness of this problem so that it could be stopped. I also agree with
Macklemore that this needs to be stopped and that by spreading awareness of this issue it could
happen. I believe that Macklemore is very smart by using the fame he has gained in a positive way by
helping to spread awareness. I think that year 12s can learn

The Salaries Of Chief Executive Salaries
1. INTRODUCTION
The salaries of chief executives is an issue that is heavily discussed on social media and on news
outlets, Increasing and decreasing CEO pay has large effects on a lot of people worldwide. This essay
will discuss to what extent or if at all chief executive salaries are excessive and should be regulated. I
will be arguing for the opinion that chief executive salaries are excessive and should be regulated, as
on average chief executive officers earn up to 180 times more than the average UK employee earns a
year (M West 2016) which may lead to demotivation of the workforce and reduce overall productivity
and reputation of the company. The outline of the essay is as follows, I will discuss points supporting
the opinion that chief executives are overpaid and require regulation as well as points opposing this
opinion.
2. MOTIVATION AND WAGE GAP
Excessive is defined as anything that is more than necessary, and something is only regulated when it
has negative impacts. The salaries of chief executives may be considered excessive when regular
employees are demotivated by the significant gap between their wages, the CPID released research
that more than half of UK employees believed high levels of chief executive pay demotivated them at
work and is bad for the reputation of the business (M West 2016). This shows that high pay of chief
executive officers does indeed have a negative impact on the motivation of the employees, and this
may lower productivity in the long

Digital Technology And Its Effects On The World
Since the 1990 s the world has experienced vast improvements in technology and what seems as an
endless expansion of the Internet, and as a result, laws and legislation have had to evolve was well.
Technologists and policymakers exist in two worlds, two cultures when it comes to viewing a problem
and developing a solution. Nevertheless, technologist and policymakers have been up against some
very complex issues such as how to control piracy of copyrighted digital media. However, copyright
owners have sought out legal means to protect their intellectual assets. In recent years copyright laws
have been in effect to strike a balance between protecting the rights of authors, artist and copyright
owners, and according to the U.S. Constitution, to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts.
Digital technology, unlike analog technology that preceded it, can make large copies in real time
without the degradation in quality. However, as a response to these capabilities of digital technology,
policymakers had to create a system of digital rights management (DRM) and other technical
deterrents where digital content owners could exert control over media usage. In response to these
complex issues, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998 was passed. Digital Rights
Management (DRM) is a systematic method of controlling access to copyrighted material. The
purpose of DRM is to prevent the unauthorized redistribution of copyrighted digital content, in other

Racial And Ethnic Disparities Of Health Care
Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care Ksenia Bruner University of St. Francis Racial and
Ethnic Disparities in Health Care Introduction Although the United States is a leader in healthcare
innovation and spends more money on health care than any other industrialized nation, not all people
in the United State benefit equally from this progress as a health care disparity exists between racial
and ethnic minorities and white Americans. Health care disparity is defined as a particular type of
health difference that is closely linked with social or economic disadvantage...adversely affecting
groups of people who have systematically experienced greater social and/or economic obstacles to

evidence shows that racial and ethnic minorities receive inferior quality health care compared to white
Americans, and multiple factors contribute to these disparities, including geography, lack of access to

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Character Analysis
In the play Cat on a Hot Tin roof written by Tennessee Williams compared to the film, which was
directed by Richard Brooks in 1958, have major similarities and differences. One of the similarities
consists of the anger the family seems to have towards one another. A few differences between the
film and the play are Maggie s character, the relationship between Brick and Skipper, and Maggie s
dislike for Skipper. Overall, there is only one major difference that stands out in both the film and
play, and that so happens to be the character Maggie and how her character is portrayed.
After reading and watching the film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the character Maggie seemed a bit
different in both. Maggie admits to sleeping with Skipper in the play so they can feel closer with
Brick, they made it seem like made love with Brick. But if you notice in the film version Maggie says
that she did not have any type of relations with Skipper. In the film Maggie is the one that told Brick
about his father s illness, which in the play the doctor is the one that told Brick. Touching up on Brick
and Maggie s relationship, in the play you can sense Brick s anger with Maggie is so unfair.
Another difference between the film and play is the relationship between Brick and Skipper. It is not
for sure but you can sense a possible homosexual relationship between Brick and Skipper. But since
the film and play was taken place in the 1950 s, it was unheard of homosexuality being an actual thing
then.

The Era Of The Colonial Era
1. The Colonial Era
In this era people were self dependent on growing their own food as well as making clothes for
themselves. In today s times we rely on retail shopping for our clothes and food. There are separate
markets for each providing room for progress in society.
As far as the business side goes in this era, most businesses were small and relied on local profit alone.
In society today, while small businesses do still exist more often than not most corporations are
relying on profit across the globe. This way more profit and jobs can be made.
The Industrial Era
The factory system was just being developed in this era. This was the beginning of a major way in
which businesses would grow. Still today we use techniques for this time bust we have improved on
the efficiency of how products are made. Also putting laws in place for no child labor which was a
great improvement.
Specialty or larger stores began to compete with the general or smaller stores that were prominent in
the previous era. Trade became less important, and with this the market economy was born. We have
improved this system with finding a good balance in big corporations and smaller businesses. This
allows the system to function much easier and there is much more room for success from several
companies, not just a few.
The age of Titans
Some called this the second industrial revolution. This was an age of many people building business
empires. To this day many businesses

Fta 215 Word Journal
In this short paper I will go over my thoughts on this week s assigned course reading. This week we
were instructed to read Chapter Four of the FTA 215 course text. This chapter covered Tools,
Maintenance, and Repair of the AR 15 platform rifle.
In the beginning of this chapter it was explained to us that Whether you are just interested in
performing maintenance on your AR 15 style rifle, or want to build one from components, you ll need
some basic tools. At this point in the game I probably wouldn t panic if I needed to work on my AR
10... but I definitely still need platform specific tools. I can t wait to get AR specific tools for our
future build. The author then went on to explain to us that the basic list of tools that we should have on
hand to work on an AR 15 platform rifle are as follows Ball peen hammer, Nylon/brass hammer, Bit
driver screwdriver, Torx bit set, Hex bit set, Flat head bits, Phillips head bits, Needle nose pliers,
Lower receiver vise block, Upper receiver vise block set, and a Rifle bench block... as well as a few
other tools. I already have most of those things, but as stated before there are a few things I still need
to acquire.
It was nice to touch on cleaning and maintenance once again, because my safe got flooding ... Show

I m sure all the platform specific courses hit on it, but I really wish it was touched on more in the other
classes as well. In this part of the chapter the author made it clear that as a mechanical device the Ar
15 is subject to malfunction or failure. Of course, you never want to discover a malfunction when you
are depending on your firearm. One way to prevent this is to perform a functions check prior to taking
your AR 15 with you for use. As a former military man... I can attest to the importance of frequent
functions checks. I still do them religiously because I need to know my weapon will go bang if I need

Woodrow Wilson and The Presidency Essay example
Woodrow Wilson and His Ability To be an Effective President
During Woodrow Wilson s two terms in office he showed to be a great democratic leader in many
areas. He managed to accomplish a lot, despite his poor health that he had to deal with since his
childhood. Wilson always had a strong interest in government and was always looking for changes
and improvements. As president he was never afraid to show a bit of a radical side when it came to
making changes. He was constantly pushing for world peace and the avoidance of World War I. Even
though he was unsuccessful in avoiding the war he showed to be a great leader during it. He never

They did not like the ideas of changing the teaching style and living style. Because of this many of his
ideas were turned down.
When he first became president he pushed for equality of opportunity for all men, no matter if they
were rich or poor (Collier s 509). He presented many new proposals to congress and often he
presented these new proposals in person.
Wilson also created new agencies such as the Federal Reserve Board and the
Federal Trade Commission. He was also responsible for the ratification of the
18th Amendment. In 1920 during his second term, he passed the 19th Amendment which allowed
women to vote. During this time he was also pressured by the southerners to allow segregation in
Washington D.C. He said that this would be in the best interests of the blacks.
Woodrow Wilson did how ever show weaknesses during his presidency.
During World War I he often took his time in making decisions. He wanted to make sure that there
wasn t any other way to avoid the war. This was good that he was looking out after the interest of the
country, but it could also have made the war worse. Wilson also was thought to be a weak president by
ex president Roosevelt (Encarta 6). During Roosevelt s time in office he helped
Panama succeed from Colombia in return for rights to build the Panama Canal through their country.
He thought it was very unnecessary to apologies to
Colombia for helping the succession of Panama.

The Civil War And American History
In American History many significant events took place that reflected religious faith of multiple
Americans and has shaped the world we live in today. Throughout the 1800s, the most memorable
times in America took place throughout the Civil War. Events that escalated before, during and even
following the Civil War resulted in a chain of reactions from many people within that period. After
analyzing the events of the Civil War, I was able to draw a connection to the actions of the soldiers,
women and Black Americans and how they were consistent with Christian faith. Prior to emphasizing
how Americans were consistent with Christian faith, first it is vital to know a little background
information on that particular period. The Civil War was seen as a traumatic period. According to the
text, the Civil War was the bloodiest in American History that ended with 618,000 killed. There are
various arguments between the true causes of the war. Despite the arguments that claim slavery was
not the cause, slavery did however play a major factor in each argument presented. Therefore, Slavery
can be considered the major cause of war, and an issue that grew over the years. According to Degler,
slavery was clearly important as a moral issue, but also as an economic institution that divided two
different, and in many ways antagonistic, societies (Degler, 2011). The division of two societies, North
and South, is what lead the war itself. The Civil War consisted of battles between the

Chinese Parents and American Parents Essay
Chinese parents and American parents differ greatly in their parenting styles and a noticeable
difference can be seen in the success of their children. The children of Chinese parents often excel in
various areas, including in their educational, musical, and professional lives. The children of American
parents, however, usually have a harder time excelling in those areas. Chinese parents and American
parents hold opposing philosophies about how they view their children, opposing methods about how
they raise their children, and opposing effects on the personalities of their children.
Chinese parents feel that their children have a responsibility to obey them and pay them back for their
efforts in raising them. American parents, on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I can see the positive and negative in both methods. The fundamental problem with all parents is
selfishness. When Western parents don t do enough to help their kids reach their potential, they are
selfish, and probably too busy doing what we feel like doing. And when Chinese parents force kids to
do what will bring the parents praise, they are selfish too. I think that the correct approach is a balance
between Chinese and Western parenting, with the focus being on commitment to your children. If
parent can find the balance between these two types then both sides will have succefull children. I
really believe Western parental method and Chinese parental method can both be used. You can t be
too soft and too hard. You have to balance it out.

Norma Rae Servant Leader
In Chapter 14 of Ken Blanchard s Leading at a Higher Level, we learn that servant leaders are a part
of a different type of leadership. Servant leaders want to make a difference in the lives of their people
and, in the process, impact the organization (pg.262). Ken Blanchard also offers several different
scenarios of those that can be referred to as a servant leader for example, the DMV manager
mentioned on pg.263, although the examples were helpful in understanding this concept I have found
that the character of Norma Rae offered the best understanding. Norma Rae was a hardworking,
determined, and independent woman. She was a servant leader who put herself aside to help change
other people s life for the better. In the movie Norma Rae

Idealism And Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius
Berkeleyan Idealism and Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius
Jorge Luis Borges short work of fiction titled Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius grapples with many
philosophic issues. In the main, this short story deals with the philosophic notion of subjective
idealism as posed by George Berkeley s Treatise Concerning Principles of Human Knowledge. Within
this essay I argue that, while he acknowledges the presumed irrefutability of Berkeley s argument,
Borges Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius aims to disparage both totalitarianism and Berkeleyan idealism by
drawing an analogy between the two via his literary creation of the fictitious world of Tlön.
The notion of subjective idealism, within western philosophy, is credited to the 18th century
philosopher George Berkeley. In his most notable work regarding this system of metaphysics, a
Treatise Concerning Principles of Human Knowledge, Berkeley holds that nothing exists outside of
the immaterial ideas within minds. Esse est percipi or to be is to be perceived (Berkeley,11). Berkley s
form of subjective idealism is able to avoid the problem of solipsism by his holding that the totality of
perceived ideas reside in the mind of God. This monistic system of metaphysics runs contra to the
earlier works of Locke and Descartes whose relative theories assumed a dualist stance concerning
metaphysics. The philosophic relevance of subjective idealism is conveyed by Borges in Tlön, Uqbar,
Orbis Tertius, when he cites David Hume who held that

Burning American Flag Persuasive Essay
Whether someone is watching the news or simply flipping through their social media pages, one thing
they will certainly see is protesting of some kind. Recently, the first thing that these protestors want to
do it set fire to the American flag. Why would they do this? Why would they burn a symbol of the
freedom they are using to demonstrate their frustrations? Burning the American flag is wrong not only
legally but also ethically and therefore should not be protected under freedom of speech. When asked
why, most protestors who want to burn the American flag respond with an answer such as it s our first
amendment right. Even though the U. S. Supreme court ruled that burning the American flag is
protected under the first amendment right to freedom of expression, the reality is that it is against the
law to desecrate the American flag. According to 18 U.S. Code § 700 Whoever knowingly mutilates,
defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the floor or ground, or tramples upon any flag of the
United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than one year, or both. This
clearly shows that the legislative branch saw that is was wrong to burn the American flag.
While the judicial branch said, in United States v. Eichman, the Supreme Court once again ruled that
burning the flag was an example of constitutionally protected free speech (Rothman) they made it
clear that no person can be legally charged under this code it doesn t change that fact

Dna Testing In Criminal Justice Essay
The scary truth about the criminal justice system is it does have errors. For every seven executions,
one death row prisoner is found innocent. Before DNA testing, they could not match a blood sample to
just one person, only a blood type. In the late 1990 s DNA testing revolutionized the accuracy of
verdicts. Every person, besides identical twins, has their own unique DNA sequence. They can match
hair, skin tissue, blood or any genetic material to one individual. ( DNA Testing and Capital
Punishment ). Now that this new technology is released, many inmates who were convicted before this
technology was introduced want the opportunity to be exonerated. Along with DNA testing, there has
been a push to set general guidelines for the attorneys appointed ... Show more content on

In the past two decades, over half of the death penalty trials have contained constitutional errors, and
five percent of those people were exonerated during retrial proving the faults of the current system. As
Leahy stated, We have cast iron scientific proof that a significant number of people sentenced to death
in America in the late twentieth century have been absolutely, undeniably innocent. This goes to show
that one out of three cases that are successful is simply not good enough. Cases in which DNA testing
has proven inmates innocence shows that the system is not perfect, and when it comes to a person s
life, there is no room for constitutional violations. There is another problem in death penalty trials, the
lawyers. In too many cases defendants have been assigned lawyers who were later disbarred,
suspended or are fresh out of law school with little to no experience. Finding quality lawyers who can
handle a death penalty trial appropriately to do it pro bono, or for little pay is hard. This is why Leahy
came up with the Innocence Protection Act to provide funding in order to give defendants accurate
representation in death penalty trials

  • 2. Quentin Marregelman Analysis Quentin Jacobsen was an un adventurous boy who lived a relatively unadventurous, boring life. Living across the street was the complete opposite, Margo Roth Spiegelman. She was daring, beautiful, and loved mystery and adventures. Quentin was used to admiring her amazing life from afar, until one night a blue eyed girl in all black burst from the window. That girl was Margo Roth Spiegelman herself. She dragged him out of bed and asked for him to drive her around town to get revenge and go on an adventure . While out in the many places they went that night, Margo talks about Paper Towns and how her town of Orlando, Florida was just a Paper Town. The following day, it is discovered that Margo ran away. But this mysterious girl wasn t going ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When she leaves Orlando, she is running from the perfect image everyone, including Q, has created for her. She is also getting away from paper towns and paper people in Orlando, even though she herself could very easily be considered paper. As she gets closer to Agloe, and farther from Orlando, she believes that she is getting farther and farther from her old paper self. But she doesn t know that as she is becoming more real she is letting down people who saw her as paper by not being perfect. Margo doesn t see herself as paper, she thinks of herself as real, just surrounded by all paper people. But she soon realizes that all her peers and people around her aren t paper, and actually are real people she doesn t know enough. It s then realized that Margo is the same as everyone else, she is equal to everyone else around her, and is not the only real person amongst paper people. On some fundamental level we find it difficult to understand that other people are human beings the same way we are. We idealize them as gods or dismiss them as animals. (Green, 164) Paper Towns uses a lot of symbolism to represent the feeling of emptiness and something being unrealistic. The paper towns are fake towns that have no real meaning. Q realizes that the real version of Margo isn t his miracle in life because Margo isn t everything that he had built her up to be. John Green uses symbolism throughout the novel to demonstrate how one sees himself, outlooks on life, and ways of viewing other people in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. History of Nursing Profession History of nursing profession Prior to the foundation of modern nursing, nuns and the military often provided nursing like services. Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern nurses. she formed the base for the first professional nursing philosophy. She saw the role of nursing as having charge of somebody s health (Crisp amp;Taylor,2009) based on the knowledge of how to put the body in such a state to be free of disease or to recover from disease (Crisp amp;Taylor,2009). The religious and military roots of modern nursing remain in evidence today in many countries, for example in the United Kingdom, senior female nurses are known as sisters. It was during time of war that a significant development in nursing history arose when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Army Nursing Service (ANS) oversaw the work of the nurses starting in 1881. These military nurses were sent overseas beginning with the First Boer War (often called Zulu War) from 1879 to 1881.[6] They were also dispatched to serve during the Egyptian Campaign in 1882 and the Sudan War of 1883 to 1884. During the Sudan War members of the Army Nursing Service nursed in hospital ships on the Nile as well as the Citadel in Cairo. Almost 2000 nurses served during the second Boer War, the Anglo Boer War of 1899 to 1902, alongside nurses who were part of the colonial armies of Australia, Canada and New Zealand. They served in tented field hospitals. 23 Army Nursing sisters from Britain lost their lives from disease outbreaks. Sporadic progress was made on several continents, where medical pioneers established formal nursing schools. But even as late as the 1870s, women working in North American urban hospitals typically were untrained, working class, and accorded lowly status by both the medical profession they supported and society at large . Nursing had the same status in Great Britain and continental Europe before World War I. Hospital nursing schools in the United States and Canada took the lead in applying Nightingale s model to their training programmers. Standards of classroom and on the job training had risen sharply in the 1880s and 1890s, and along with them the expectation of decorous and professional conduct. • 4. The Importance Of Democracy In Democracy American democracy supply its citizens with the most freedom, the most opportunity, the greatest success, and the most comfortable life. A high number of Americans have lost faith in their democracy. In 1988, United States democratic party was 33%. In 2014, it decreased to 29%. For more democratic to gain their faith, the democracy have to improve. The humanities can solve this problem by starting with itself. Improving education, improving oneself as a human being, improving healthcare and improving economics growth. Education can help people participate in democracy in different ways, including providing them with literacy and other skills to enable them to take action in political discussions and to be able to get political information through the media easily. Education promotes good governance by giving citizens the confidence and skills they need to become active members of their society and hold their governments responsible, therefore we need more people in higher class occupations. Education reduces poverty, help economic growth, leads to better health and promotes gender equality. Everyone should come together to enhance themselves as a human being. This action is will be very challenging, but possible. If everyone will take the time out to compliment themselves, stop making excuses, let go of anger, practice forgiveness, be honest, be helpful, listen to others, be respectful, educate themselves, and more, there will be massive number of civilized ... • 5. The Story Of The Uva Campus Rape Journalist are so focused on getting a hot story that they forget one of the most important principles of journalism, which is the notion of objectivity. Objectivity is described, as an objective journalist is one who is detached, neutral, impartial, and unbiased (Knowlton 45). When Rolling Stone had Steve Coll and his crew investigate the story that was one of the first problems found in the story of the UVA campus rape. Sabrina Rubin Erdely was in search of a college rape case that would show what it s like to be on campus now (Coronel). When Erdely found a story she just went with it, she did not research enough to make sure the story was credible. From the beginning of the whole process of the story she already started off unbiased and not neutral to the true facts of the story. A Journalist must be unbiased but they also have to check their sources to make sure they are credible. To working journalist, the procedures of verification and attribution are as automatic as breathing in and out. (Knowlton 56) This is another thing the Erdely and the Rolling Stone fact checker failed to do. Erdely failed to follow up with her sources and make sure they were credible sources. Instead she felt the student ( Jackie ) had this stamp of credibility because a university employee had connected them (Coronel). Than as for the fact checker which job is to review a writer s story after it has been drafted, to double check details like dates and physical description ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Hybrid Vehicle Research Paper Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Their Advantages The HEV [Hybrid Electric Vehicle] concept goes back to 1905. On November 23 of that year, American engineer H. Piper filed for a patent on a hybrid vehicle. Piper s design called for an electric motor to augment a gasoline engine (1, pg 2) and thus, the HEV was born. Hybrid Electric Vehicles, otherwise known as HEVs are vehicles that combine the internal combustion engine of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle (2). In this day and age car manufactures are trying to out compete one another in terms of car features and sales. Technology has come a long way since 1905 but the principle is still the same: to produce ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those who may doubt the potential for HEVs may ask: ?Why HEVs?? The Office of Transportation Technologies makes the following points about HEVs: ?The practical benefits of HEVs include improved fuel economy and lower emissions compared to conventional vehicles?Hybrids will never be true zero emission vehicles, however, because of their internal combustion engine. But the first hybrids on the market will cut emissions of global warming pollutants by a third to a half, and later models may cut emissions by even more?(2). Although hybrid vehicles are not zero emission vehicles, they are a very good alternative to the conventional vehicles that are on the road today. With the capability to have a higher fuel economy and emit lower amounts of pollution, hybrids are strong contenders against such vehicles as SUVs (sports utility vehicles). Another advantage that HEVs have is that they are competitively priced with other vehicles on the market today. ?The HEVs available for sale are very cost competitive with similar conventional vehicles. Any cost premium that may be associated with HEVs of the future can be off set by overall fuel savings and possible incentives?(2). As a result of not having a very high price tag, in comparison with standard vehicles, HEVs are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Audio Engineer A vital part in the making of any professionally made album is the production and post production process. These processes are the responsibility of audio engineers employed by record labels. The engineers are responsible for the recording, mixing, and mastering of audio tracks. To do this, engineers are trained with various technologies in the fields of multi track recording, outboard gear and digital/analog workstations. With their knowledge and tools, engineers help the artists convey their art as best as possible not only to themselves but also to the demographic they wish to express their art to. The job of the engineer can be best described as a presenter in a techno artistic field. The job requires the technical capabilities and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to an interview of noted audio engineer Simon Kasprowicz what makes a good engineer from a bad is totally subjective and depends upon individual desire because what may sound fantastic to someone, others will find fault in (Kasprowicz, about.com). When all of the tracks of a project have been recorded, assembled, and edited onto the digital audio workstation or tape deck, the next step would be to individually mix the elements of their work in their final edited forms. The mix down process occurs by routing the various tracks of a digital audio workstation or tape based recorder through a hardware virtual mixing console to alter the overall session s program, all which include getting relative level, spatial positioning, using equalizers, and effects. Once these measures are taken care of, the engineer can then set up a rough mix of the song by adjusting levels and the spatial pan positions. The producer who is mostly provides feedback to the artist and the engineer during the session, listens to the mix and may ask the engineer to make specific changes such as amplitude adjustments. Instruments in their isolated tracks are often soloed for equalized changes to be made. The usual compression and limiting can be used in the mixing process to make individual tracks sound fuller and more consistent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Ballet Slippers Research Paper Ballet Slippers Culture is the overview of how a group of people live, their beliefs and moral system, and basic things such as how they dress. Culture is subjective, no two people see it the same way. I may see Scottish culture as a group of people who wear kilts and play bagpipes, but someone else may think it involves red hair and haggis. Culture is often made up of stereotypes, for example: someone may believe that Canadian culture is igloos, pet polar bears, apologizing, and saying eh after every word. In reality Canadian culture from the perspective of someone living in it includes: different religions, holding the door for someone behind you, and wearing a tuque in winter. There are multiple layers of culture, the blanket term; usually referring to the country or main region in which you live. Culture can then be broken down into many sub categories such as: ... Ballet started in Italian Renaissance, but spread through Europe and made it s way into North American culture. Ballet is a significant source of entertainment, and many people enjoy dancing, and start with basic ballet lessons. Ballet is becoming more popular again with the rise of competitive dance. Television shows such as So You Think You Can Dance , and America s Got Talent showcase many ballet dancers, and other dancers in mainstream media. Ballet is often considered boring because of it s classical nature, but as boring or old fashioned it may seem it often is the basics for most styles of dance. It is one of the most technically challenging, and ballerinas are some of the most well rounded athletes. Famous actors such as Channing Tatum and Christian Bale took lessons in ... • 9. Free Slides In The Music Industry Drowned in Sound states that 95% of music downloads in 2008 were illegal. So what do artists receive for all their hard work? The answer is that they receive close to nothing and their lack of revenue from music downloads could very well lead to drastic changes in the music industry. Not only do they receive little revenue, but they also need money to keep making music, and to support themselves. I believe that music consumers should pay for their music rather than listen to it on free apps or download it illegally. To begin with, artists make so little money from free downloads, if they are even paid at all. Willie Geist stated, Spotify has more than forty million regular users, over ten million paying ten dollars a month for its premium ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mike Batt said, But there has been negative comment. Last week I read an article by an otherwise sane and respected musician and journalist who said that downloading music free was like downloading air , implying that because you can t see it, it should be free. He also said that it is so cheap to get recorded music to the audience that artists no longer need a major label . While it s true that you can t see it, he was definitely wrong in saying that it should be free. Artists work hard to make the music, it is their lifestyle. People generally like music and if they want to listen to it then they should pay for it, and if they don t want to pay for it maybe they shouldn t listen to it. Music is a satisfaction, like any other form of entertainment in your household, so why shouldn t you pay for it. In reality, music does not cost that much money. Having choices can make it harder but understanding what you have and how it needs to be shipped can be beneficial. For non retail packages there are three types of shipping containers, plastic based, paper based, and wood based. In this paper I will go over the advantages and disadvantages of paper based container, plastic based container and wood based container. As well as, compare all three to each other. Disadvantages Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages of wood based crates for shipping. Wood needs to be treated. The finished product when the crate is all put together is too heavy, requires lifting equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts or even cranes, they can even become a safety risk to employees handling the crates because of splinters and concerns with handling to get inside. Wood also sometimes has a smell to it that can be bad for the products that are inside. Wood has been used for centuries for crafting. Wood based shipping containers are used to gather, store, ship and protect consumer goods. Paper based As time changes, paper and paper based packaging have become key components in today society. Wings Macklemore Analysis Reading Response 5 Title of text: Wings Text type: Song Author: Macklemore The song Wings by Macklemore is about how people identify through the means of consumerism. It also discusses the fleeting happiness that is intrinsically linked to the almighty power of the purchase. The song is based on shoes, but it Macklemore aims to paint a broader picture of being a consumer by using his own experiences of retail infused desire. In the music wings by Macklemore, he preaches against consumerism in American culture. He uses the example of expensive Nike branded shoes to show the effect consumerism has on citizens. They feel that the brand is the only way they can identify themselves. With this song I think Macklemore is trying say that we need to dissect our attachment to brands and logos and the happiness that is associated with the purchasing of these expensive brands. With this song I think he is trying to take away the strong connection between bands and being cool . The section of lyrics in the song; my friend Carlos brother got murdered for his fours, whoa Macklemore uses this metaphor to show how Carlos brother got totally ripped apart by his peers because his basketball shoes weren t cool or the right brand. We are so stuck in the world of consumerism and the need to buy things to be able to relate with others. I can relate to this because on a daily basis I see people get judged by what they wear and what the own (material goods) rather than them as a person. When Macklemore wrote this song he hoped to spread awareness of this problem so that it could be stopped. I also agree with Macklemore that this needs to be stopped and that by spreading awareness of this issue it could happen. • 12. The Salaries Of Chief Executive Salaries 1. INTRODUCTION The salaries of chief executives is an issue that is heavily discussed on social media and on news outlets, Increasing and decreasing CEO pay has large effects on a lot of people worldwide. This essay will discuss to what extent or if at all chief executive salaries are excessive and should be regulated. I will be arguing for the opinion that chief executive salaries are excessive and should be regulated, as on average chief executive officers earn up to 180 times more than the average UK employee earns a year (M West 2016) which may lead to demotivation of the workforce and reduce overall productivity and reputation of the company. The outline of the essay is as follows, I will discuss points supporting the opinion that chief executives are overpaid and require regulation as well as points opposing this opinion. 2. MOTIVATION AND WAGE GAP Excessive is defined as anything that is more than necessary, and something is only regulated when it has negative impacts. The salaries of chief executives may be considered excessive when regular employees are demotivated by the significant gap between their wages, the CPID released research that more than half of UK employees believed high levels of chief executive pay demotivated them at work and is bad for the reputation of the business (M West 2016). This shows that high pay of chief executive officers does indeed have a negative impact on the motivation of the employees, and this may lower productivity in the long ... • 15. Digital Technology And Its Effects On The World Since the 1990 s the world has experienced vast improvements in technology and what seems as an endless expansion of the Internet, and as a result, laws and legislation have had to evolve was well. Technologists and policymakers exist in two worlds, two cultures when it comes to viewing a problem and developing a solution. Nevertheless, technologist and policymakers have been up against some very complex issues such as how to control piracy of copyrighted digital media. However, copyright owners have sought out legal means to protect their intellectual assets. In recent years copyright laws have been in effect to strike a balance between protecting the rights of authors, artist and copyright owners, and according to the U.S. Constitution, to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts. Digital technology, unlike analog technology that preceded it, can make large copies in real time without the degradation in quality. However, as a response to these capabilities of digital technology, policymakers had to create a system of digital rights management (DRM) and other technical deterrents where digital content owners could exert control over media usage. In response to these complex issues, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998 was passed. One of the similarities consists of the anger the family seems to have towards one another. A few differences between the film and the play are Maggie s character, the relationship between Brick and Skipper, and Maggie s dislike for Skipper. Overall, there is only one major difference that stands out in both the film and play, and that so happens to be the character Maggie and how her character is portrayed. After reading and watching the film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the character Maggie seemed a bit different in both. Maggie admits to sleeping with Skipper in the play so they can feel closer with Brick, they made it seem like made love with Brick. But if you notice in the film version Maggie says that she did not have any type of relations with Skipper. In the film Maggie is the one that told Brick about his father s illness, which in the play the doctor is the one that told Brick. Touching up on Brick and Maggie s relationship, in the play you can sense Brick s anger with Maggie is so unfair. Another difference between the film and play is the relationship between Brick and Skipper. It is not for sure but you can sense a possible homosexual relationship between Brick and Skipper. But since the film and play was taken place in the 1950 s, it was unheard of homosexuality being an actual thing then. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout the 1800s, the most memorable times in America took place throughout the Civil War. Events that escalated before, during and even following the Civil War resulted in a chain of reactions from many people within that period. After analyzing the events of the Civil War, I was able to draw a connection to the actions of the soldiers, women and Black Americans and how they were consistent with Christian faith. Prior to emphasizing how Americans were consistent with Christian faith, first it is vital to know a little background information on that particular period. The Civil War was seen as a traumatic period. According to the text, the Civil War was the bloodiest in American History that ended with 618,000 killed. There are various arguments between the true causes of the war. Despite the arguments that claim slavery was not the cause, slavery did however play a major factor in each argument presented. Therefore, Slavery can be considered the major cause of war, and an issue that grew over the years. According to Degler, slavery was clearly important as a moral issue, but also as an economic institution that divided two different, and in many ways antagonistic, societies (Degler, 2011). • 32. Idealism And Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius Berkeleyan Idealism and Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius Jorge Luis Borges short work of fiction titled Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius grapples with many philosophic issues. In the main, this short story deals with the philosophic notion of subjective idealism as posed by George Berkeley s Treatise Concerning Principles of Human Knowledge. Within this essay I argue that, while he acknowledges the presumed irrefutability of Berkeley s argument, Borges Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius aims to disparage both totalitarianism and Berkeleyan idealism by drawing an analogy between the two via his literary creation of the fictitious world of Tlön. The notion of subjective idealism, within western philosophy, is credited to the 18th century philosopher George Berkeley. In his most notable work regarding this system of metaphysics, a Treatise Concerning Principles of Human Knowledge, Berkeley holds that nothing exists outside of the immaterial ideas within minds. Esse est percipi or to be is to be perceived (Berkeley,11). Berkley s form of subjective idealism is able to avoid the problem of solipsism by his holding that the totality of perceived ideas reside in the mind of God. This monistic system of metaphysics runs contra to the earlier works of Locke and Descartes whose relative theories assumed a dualist stance concerning metaphysics. The philosophic relevance of subjective idealism is conveyed by Borges in Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, when he cites David Hume who held that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Recently, the first thing that these protestors want to do it set fire to the American flag. Why would they do this? Why would they burn a symbol of the freedom they are using to demonstrate their frustrations? Burning the American flag is wrong not only legally but also ethically and therefore should not be protected under freedom of speech. When asked why, most protestors who want to burn the American flag respond with an answer such as it s our first amendment right. Even though the U. S. Supreme court ruled that burning the American flag is protected under the first amendment right to freedom of expression, the reality is that it is against the law to desecrate the American flag. According to 18 U.S. Code § 700 Whoever knowingly mutilates, defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the floor or ground, or tramples upon any flag of the United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than one year, or both. This clearly shows that the legislative branch saw that is was wrong to burn the American flag. While the judicial branch said, in United States v.
