Every Body Is A Masterpiece
Every body is a Masterpiece
Fat. Ugly. Skinny. Obese. Slim. Plump. Anorexic. Flabby. Thin. Scrawny. These are just a few terms
that are used when people humiliate others on their appearance or body shape; in other words, body
shaming. I am very passionate about the topic of body shaming. I believe that society needs to stop
sending out images to young girls of the "perfect body" or the idea of "body goals." Everyday,
people see tweets or posts on various social networking sites harassing others, like Instagram,
Ask.fm, Facebook, and Twitter. These sites give people access to comment on another person's
picture if they are following them or if they are not. They will go to any extreme to humiliate others
and say things like, " Shut up you're fat" or " What's up with girls nowadays getting too damn
skinny? Get some meat on your bones, YOU DON'T LOOK HEALTHY!!". Anywhere you look you
will see someone embarrassing another person on their weight or size. Studies show that adolescent
girls are more fearful of gaining weight than getting cancer or having a nuclear war
(RaderPrograms.com). To think that girls are more frightened of gaining weight than being involved
in a war is unperceivable! Another study showed that an average US woman is 5'4" tall weighing
140 pounds and the average US model is 5'11" weighing 117 pounds. How are women suppose to
feel confident about their body when models are almost 30 pounds lighter than an average woman's
weight? I think most girls fears

Woman Is The Greatest Masterpiece Created By God
Woman is the greatest masterpiece created by God to accompany man in all equality. The
complexity and the way of thinking of a woman has always fascinated men throughout the ages. But
unfortunately, for centuries, women became underestimated and despised by men. Having no
education, they were limited in all their activities. By examining closely the portrait of the woman in
religion. Precisely in the Koran and in the Bible, it is clear that the Koran is misogynist compared to
the Bible. In the Koran, women are not equal to men, they are not valued as they should be and they
are portrayed as sexual objects. "Women are the agent of social transformation who prepare children
to enter human society. Beyond this, they are the portals through which all people come into this
world"(Frymer–Kensy, 329). No matter what, women will always be important in our world. For the
fact that Eve fell into temptation and ate of the fruit of the tree of good and evil, people still have the
tendency to blame Eve for the fall of mankind. And it is from this perspective that women began to
be underestimated for the next generations to follow. The Koran and Hadiths, which are the
traditions of the prophets and the writings of Mohammed, greatly influence the way in which the
woman is seen in Islam. The Koran is very misogynist compared the Bible that has demonstrated
great respect towards women.
The equality of man and woman is a subject that is very often discussed everywhere around the
world. Up

An Operatic Retelling Of Orwell 's Dystopian Masterpiece
1984: An Operatic retelling of Orwell's dystopian masterpiece. Kirstie Wooten Shepherd University
Abstract This research looks at the Operatic work 1984 based on the 1949 George Orwell novel of
the same name. The research centers on the synopsis of the story, inspirations of both author and
composer, performers in the opera, as well as its premiere and review. 1984: An Operatic Retelling
of Orwell's Dystopian Masterpiece. As the history of Opera has progressed, characters have become
progressively raw and themes increasingly dark. While Comedic Operas delight and entertain
spectators, there is just something about controversial, visceral stories that keep audiences yearning

One running theme of the book is summarized by the haunting government slogan "Who controls
the past...controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" The Party aims to have full
control over their people, manipulating anything possible to create mind–washed citizens with blind
devotion. A tactic of control is The Party's ironically named Ministry of Truth; this organization pays
workers to sit and edit various aspects of the past to make The Party look good. For example,
throughout the book Chocolate rations are constantly being cut, however, it is constantly advertised
as increasing–to accomplish this, party members must physically go into previous articles and
change previous remarks that The Party has made. It is in this ministry that protagonist works,
which Maazel describes more as an "Anti–hero". Our anti–hero is a thin and almost sickly middle
aged man by the name of Winston. His disapproval of the current system and distain for Big Brother
is apparent by his diary writings (which are punishable by torture and death, etc.) that immediately
spiraled into a subconscious scribbling of "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER". From the very
beginning he is aware that his insubordinate thoughts with eventually lead to his inevitable capture
and torture. It is not until he

Masterpiece Cake Shop Vs. Colorado: Case Study
The case of The Masterpiece Cake Shop vs. Colorado will be argued in court later on this year. This
case revolves around the gay couple, Craig and Mullens, who attempted to order a wedding cake for
their celebration. To their dismay, the cake shop owner refused to service the couple. Phillips stated
that he did not want to design a cake for a same sex couple. Unfortunately, his actions were illegal in
the state of Colorado, or were they? Feeling that Phillips had violated their civil rights, the couple
filed a complaint against Phillips, the shop owner, with the Civil Rights Commission. The complaint
stated that Phillips had violated their rights by refusing to service them solely because they were a
same sex couple. Phillips was ordered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The attorney stated that his right to exercise and practice his religion were also being violated.
Moreover, his craft of creating cakes is to please God, and same sex marriages are not pleasing to
God. Phillips doesn't want to serve anything or anyone that is not pleasing to God. The
nondiscriminatory laws and the people who wrote them would disagree. But, because of the nature
of this situation, this could go either way. Especially since the president and his lawyers have
weighed in supporting the cake shop owner, his religious belief and his right to exercise them. I
guess this is what the president meant when he says he'll protect our civil liberties. Because of the
governments involvement, the verdict may swing Phillips way setting precedence in the US. The
courts and the state have another dilemma on their hands. We will have to wait a while to see how
this plays out in court and the media. But one thing we do know, Craig and Mullens won their case
in the states and Phillips will not bake another designer wedding cake unless he wins in the supreme
court. The courts may use their implied powers against Phillips and punish him for

Mullins V. Masterpiece Cakeshop Discriminatory
In the case of Charlie Craig and David Mullins, the petitioners, versus Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd.,
the respondents, the court sides with the petitioners. This claim is based upon an argument meant to
highlight the discriminatory nature of refusing service within a public accommodation. The actions
of Masterpiece Cakeshop, first, violate the Colorado Anti–Discrimination Law as the bakery exists
as a public accommodation, rather than an individualized entity. Second, it is invalid to believe
Phillips was discriminatory on the grounds of conduct rather than character as one cannot exist
without the other; thereby, Phillips cannot choose to abstain from baking cakes for same–sex
marriages due to religious beliefs without denying service to same–sex ... Show more content on

As a result, Colorado, like many other states, took it upon itself to outline protections to classes not
originally included within the Constitution. Outlined within the 10th Amendment of the
Constitution, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by
it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people" (U.S. Constitution). Upon
those grounds, the Colorado Anti–Discrimination Act ("CADA") was created to effectively prohibit
businesses open to the community from refusing full and equal services based on aspects of one's
identity– this includes, but is not limited to, sexual orientation. The relevant provision of this act is
found in Section 24–34–601(2) a), C.R.S. 2014, "It is a discriminatory practice and unlawful for a
person, directly or indirectly, to refuse, withhold from, or deny to an individual or a group, because
of ... sexual orientation ... the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges,
advantages, or accommodations of a place of public accommodation ..." (CADA, 2016). At its most
simple, the Phillips' actions blatantly violate this state law. Although Phillips offered Craig and
Mullins baked goods for any other occasion, he would not sell them baked goods for a same–sex
wedding; thus, denying equal and full enjoyment of products that would be available to any

Molieres Tartuffe a Masterpiece of French Literature Essay
Molieres Tartuffe a Masterpiece of French Literature Moliére's Tartuffe has long been considered a
masterpiece of French Literature for its powerful social commentary, finely sculptured characters
and its presentation of moral theme. While Tartuffe stands soundly on its own merits, its curiosity
and impact for audiences both within its own period and for contemporary productions are
heightened by the history surrounding its original presentation. Tartuffe was written and produced in
a sensitive time for a sensitive audience. King Louis XIV sat upon a throne made uneasy with the
plotting and dissent of multiple and powerful factions. The self–styled "Sun King", King Louis XIV
inherited a throne at five that he would not truly rule ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite appeals to King Louis, Moliére was refused permission to stage the play for the general
public. For the next three years Moliére continued to present Tartuffe at private gatherings hoping to
garner the support he needed to reverse the interdiction against the play's performance. Late in 1664
Moliére was able to get the approval of the legate Chili for the performance of Tartuffe. This
approval gave Moliére grounds to submit a new petition to the King. The King, again, denied the
petition. Adding insult to injury, Moliére's one time sponsor the Prince de Conti wrote a treatise
against the stage in which he accused Moliére of being an atheist. Given the renewed campaign
against him, Moliére's hopes for producing Tartuffe in 1666 were dashed. On August 5, 1667,
operating on a secret agreement with the King, Moliére presented The Imposter (A milder version of
Tartuffe). The King was not present for the opening as he was encamped with his army at Flanders.
This would prove troublesome for Moliére when the Church moved to stop further performances of
The Imposter and he found himself without what he supposed to be his most important ally, King
Louis. Immediately following the first performance President de

Analysis of “Dark Shadows” as a Gothic Masterpiece
Analysis of "Dark Shadows" as a Gothic Masterpiece To most, when asked to define what Gothic is,
they will state that it is similar to any other story, just with more "darkness." This is because Gothic
stories all have a classic story line. First, there is the main character's back story, if any is then told.
Next, there are events that lead up to a horrible incident that is the climax of the story. Lastly, the
character finds some way to fix the situation or free him– or herself from it. They might go insane,
commit suicide, run away, or watch other characters perish. However, readers would be greatly
mistaken if they thought that this was all that there is to a Gothic story; there is much more to the
Gothic than meets the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also changed the anatomy of vampires. Classic vampires could be harmed with garlic or the
light. While the light hurt him, he was able to merely wear a hat and cloak and not be harmed.
However, there is still much more to Gothic Literature. According to Baldick, "For the Gothic effect
to be attained, a tale should combine a fearful sense of inheritance in time with a claustrophobic
sense of enclosure in space" (xix). A story can have Gothic tropes but not be Gothic. There are loads
of books that have murders and ghosts that aren't considered Gothic at all, like Harry Potter by J.K.
Rowling. His parents were killed and there was a ghost trapped in the girl's bathroom, but it isn't
Gothic at all. What makes a story Gothic is how it is told or portrayed. Sometimes, the scenes that
are used are to make the viewers question what is righteous and what is wicked. Burton shows this
with how he introduces his characters and their personalities. For the vampire Barnabas, he is
portrayed not as monster but as an unfortunate soul who has a curse that he is trying to rid himself
of. Instead of wanting to stay a vampire, he joins up with a local physician to try and find a cure to
make him human again. However, he still kills humans and drinks their blood. This makes the
audience question whether Barnabas is an evil vampire or a poor man with a curse due to this hidden
identity. This is also shown with

Hard to Be a God: A Messy, Murky Masterpiece Hard to Be a God, Aleksei German's hefty three
hour film based on a novel of the same name, is grim, shocking representation of a human society
without scientific advancement or pursuit of knowledge. In this cinematic depiction, thirty scientists
are sent to an identical Earth–like planet where the residents there have had their renaissance and
scientific enlightenment periods completely suppressed and anything considered remotely
"intellectual" is destroyed and so society was forced to be frozen in the Middle Ages indefinitely. At
the beginning of seeing this film, I was bored and unimpressed by the experience. The setting was

The readability of Hard to Be a God is partly assured by the sense its implied reader has of being 'in
the know.' The disguise and secrecy essential to allegory invest its hidden message with a rhetorical
power it would not necessarily possess on its own (Gomel)." The decision to interweave these
parallels and minute details into Hard to Be a God to make it possible to draw these allusions to
actual historical events makes it immensely more powerful and imaginative as an allegorical film
appealing to, in this case, the Soviet intellectuals who were capable of reading more in–depth into
the text. It's form as an allegory and a film naturally lends a sense of responsibility and power to the
audience to perhaps not just be conscious about the dangers of intellectual suppression and
indifferent individuals, but to create an active discussion about these certain topics and cultivate

of Masterpiece Cakeshop. As with the conservative justices, most will likely support that of
Masterpiece Cakeshop. Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, Associate Justice Samuel Alito, and the
newly appointed Associate Justice Neil Goursch would most likely choose to support the freedom of
religion and the right to refuse service, most likely quoting Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, as they
tend to stay on the conservative side of the argument. Whereas Associate Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsberg, Associate Justice Stephen Breyer, Associate Justice Elena Kagan, and Associate Justice
Sonia Sotomayor would most likely stick with the argument that this is discrimination of gay
Americans, most likely quoting Employment Division, Department of Human Resources of Oregon

what I believe is that our past is what's making our future desirable, its building America into a
strong nation. The America I believe in makes freedom a fundamental in our country, the definition
of freedom is the rights to think or act however you want, every person own freedom themselves,
the only reason why chaos occurs when it comes is because on how the brain reacts and how we
decide to present ourselves. Lastly the America I believe in is converting into a different society. We

David started out as a Shepard boy who at a young age slew a giant that even Israel greatest fighter
King Saul would not confront. He found favor in the eyes of God and was anointed King over all
Israel. But later on in life David made a lot of mistakes, he became a murderer and a adulterer. Yet
the bible calls him a man after Gods own heart. Why is that? Because David repented and allowed
God to make him over. Jeremiah 18:3–6 says "So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him
working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the
potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the Lord came
to me: "Oh house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?" declares the Lord. You see
because we were marred in the hand of the potter, Jesus could have taken this deformed, marred,
inadequate, messed–up, sin–sick, good for nothing piece of clay and tossed it aside. Why? Because
He is God! He could have taken this clay, thrown it out, and started with new clay; but he kept the
same broken vessel, the same defaced, disfigured, and blemished clay and formed a vessel fit for the
King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He could have easily started over at the Garden of Eden with
Adam and Eve, but my God said No! I'm going to take these same broken pieces and put them back
together again. That's the kind of God I serve. Sometimes the potters work is uncomfortable for the
pot.

A Masterpiece At Ground Zero Summary
In the article "A Masterpiece at Ground Zero", by Martin Filler, the author attempts to express his
high regard for the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. Despite the fact that he is presenting his
argument to a an audience who is already interested in reading more intense articles since they are
subscribed to the publisher, Filler uses highly specified design terminology and structures his article
in a non–linear, confusing way. Therefore, his overall argument in support of the memorial is lost in
the style of his article, and does not create a strong basis for further support of this contested public
work. Throughout the entire article, Filler consistently illustrates his arguments with complex
vocabulary and references that deduct from a general audiences understanding of the article. One
prominent example of this is his elaborate description of the font choice used to display the names
of people lost in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, Filler constantly, and randomly, interrupts his own train of thought with references to
other designers and projects. He brings up things varying from Maya Lin's Vietnam War Memorial
of 1981–1982 in Washington, D.C, to the corruption in New York and New Jersey over funding this
project, all within the space of a few short paragraphs. This significantly distracts the reader from
the subject of the 9/11 Memorial and requires his audience to have outside knowledge of famous
monuments and designs. Moreover, he demonstrates an obvious dislike of the museum portion of
the project, expressing that "the pavilion's nervously off–kilter, exaggeratedly slant–roofed form
imparts the deeply disquieting appearance of a building in collapse, which under these
circumstances seems not merely unfortunate but downright tactless". While this statement provides
an interesting argument and sparks discussion on architecture and design, it does not fit well with
his thesis that the memorial is a

The 50's: The Decade Of Major And Minor Masterpieces
The 1950s: The Decade of Major & Minor Masterpieces
Throughout his career, Ford returned time and again to Ireland. In the 50s, he set two of his best
films of the decade there: The Quiet Man (1952) and The Rising of the Moon (1957). The former,
set in 1920s Ireland, sees John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara develop their most successful rapport as
a pair of battling lovers. Wayne's Sean Thornton returns to his Irish homeland from America to
reclaim the farm he was born on, and that's where he meets O'Hara's Mary Kate. The Rising of the
Moon combines the best of comic Ford with his interest in the Irish battle for independence.

(1957). It's the film that inspired movies from Star Wars (1977) to Taxi Driver (1976). John Wayne
plays the ex–confederate soldier, and now drifter, Ethan Edwards, a man without a place in the
world. The Searchers is a film about family, and why Ethan can only ever hover on the peripheries

Ethan pours himself into the search for his niece who was stolen and raised as an Indian after a tribe
of Comanches killed her family. He saves the girl – though he toyed with the idea of killing her
instead – and restores a family he has no place in. For all the harsh beauty of the location shots, the
camera is often placed within the family home peering through windows and doors – the same door
that would slam shut on Ethan at the end of the film as he wandered off to who knows where. Does

Jessie J. Masterpiece Analysis
My life this past year can be explained by the song "Masterpiece" by Jessie J. Masterpiece is about
not worrying about the people that hate on you and embracing yourself. It's about growing as a
person into your masterpiece and that is why it is my theme song. I'd say this year has been the best
year of my middle school experience. Last year was probably my worst year in academics, behavior,
and self–love. I disliked my school, the teachers, and most of the people in it. I felt like no one was
on my side. This year has been so different. I feel like I've excelled at academics, sports, and
friendships, and it all started when I came to MME. The atmosphere was so different. It was
comforting to feel that the teachers were there to help you learn from your mistakes instead of
dwelling on them. I met many good friends who have made my year so much better. I've grown a lot
this year, mentally and maturity wise. My teachers, my friends, and my family have been a big part
of it. This year I've come to realize that your happiness is so important. If you keep doing things but

relate to this because this year I've learned not to care what people talk about you or what they say. I
know I mess up all the time, but I don't care as much what people say about me. In the previous
years I would think people were always looking at how I acted or what I wore; now I dress how I
want to dress and it makes me a happier person. In the past year athletics has changed for me too.

Why Is America Considered A Masterpiece
When I think of America, I imagine of a masterpiece. When America was first discovered by
Christopher Columbus, it was a blank canvas with native American details on the rim. These details
represent how the Native Americans have affected America. Since then, every triumph, failure, rise,
and fall that America has had, another part was added. And though this painting was once a blank
canvas, it is now a wonderful painting with landmarks from near and wide, full of every color, and
includes everything important to modern America.
Opportunity. The blank canvas itself represents all of the possibilities that America had. And it gave
the settlers the opportunity to add whatever they wanted to the canvas.

become the symbol of the international perfumery. Chanel No. 5 is unquestionably the most
legendary ever made fragrance, described as an opera of olfactory art. Independent, unconventional,
and provocative Coco Chanel transformed her unfamiliar name in an obligatory reference point for
fashion design of the twentieth. Icon of female strength, she translates the complexity and elegance
that characterize the woman, with the creation of what would become the scent par excellence. Her
way of conceiving the perfume is peculiar. When asked where to put the perfume she replies: " A
woman should wear a fragrance wherever she expects to be kissed" (A Woman). Coco also launches
what turned out according to the instructions of the designer had to embody a concept of femininity
timeless, unique and fascinating. The avant–garde idea of Chanel breaks every scheme imagining
her fragrance for a modern and independent woman, far from the stereotype that envisages she
should perfume of roses. Hence, Chanel No. 5 is the first perfume that rejects the convention and
symbolizes the technological and cultural innovation, furthermore, the women 's empowerment.
Chanel No. 5 is a concentrated of absolute femininity that shook the world of fragrances forever

3 Vermeer Masterpieces
Growing up near a city filled with museums, I was lucky enough to be exposed to amazing works of
art. My visits to the Frick Collection, housed in one of the only remaining Gilded Age mansions in
New York, have clearly been my favorite throughout the years. In that special ambiance, I
discovered the glowing and extraordinarily clear tranquil paintings of Johannes Vermeer. I was
drawn to the three Vermeer masterpieces in the permanent exhibit. The personal qualities of both the
mansion and the paintings captured my fascination and I returned frequently. With extraordinary
clarity, Vermeer was able to capture objects precisely through light and space. At first I wasn't sure
why his paintings appeared so different from the other works of his time, but I soon realized they
were infused with light and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The camera obscura catches an image through a lens and it is projected in a darkened chamber. The
portable camera obscura invented in the 17th century could be moved around and used both indoors
and outdoors. It had an adjustable lens and a slanted metal mirror which projected the image onto a
translucent screen. By moving the lens forward and back, the image could be focused on the screen.
It should be noted here that if Vermeer placed such a portable camera obscura on the table, the
height of the lens would correspond to the height of the windowsill in Vermeer's home, which is the
same level of the viewing points in many of his paintings (Koningsberger 139). Therefore, Vermeer
would have had both the technology and the right mindset of the day to be aided by the camera
obscura. In a book by architect Philip Steadman, the argument comes as close as possible proving
the use of a camera obscura through reconstruction and recreation of six Vermeer paintings.
Steadman analyzes using calculations of the sizes of the projections on Vermeer's back wall which
match perfectly. Six out of six matches cannot be a coincidence, it is pretty convincing

Analysis Of Chesterton And His Literary Masterpiece
While doing research on G.K. Chesterton and his literary masterpiece, I came upon this question
"What is the difference between progress and growth?" to which G.K. Chesterton answered "The
fatal metaphor of progress, which means leaving things behind us, has utterly obscured the real idea
of growth, which means leaving things inside of us." This statement is just one of the plethora of
quotations of a man who never attended any university, and it amazing how he can say something
about everything and say it better than everybody else. This is a journey to understand a genius and
the Nightmare that he is well known for even over one–hundred years after it was written.

Although he never went to college, he proved that genius cannot be tied down to the rules of the
academy. Chesterton, in fact, chose to be a journalist, because in that role he could think most
profoundly, powerfully, and effectively.
He was vitally concerned with the injustices of Great Britain to its dependencies. He progressed
from newspaper to public debate. He used logic, laughter, paradox, and his own winning personality
to show that imperialism was destroying English patriotism.
In 1900 he published his first literary works, two volumes of poetry. In 1900 he met Hilaire Belloc,
and in 1901 he married Frances Blogg. These events were two of the great influences in his life.
From 1904 to 1936 Chesterton published nearly a dozen novels, the most important being The
Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904) and The Man Who Was Thursday (1908). In 1911 Chesterton
created the ''Father Brown'' detective stories. During his literary career he published 90 books and
numerous articles.
He poured out a wealth of lighthearted essays, historical sketches, and metaphysical and polemical
works, together with such well–known poems as ''The Ballad of the White Horse,'' ''Lepanto,'' and
the drinking songs from The Flying Inn. Among his major critical works are reviews of Robert
Browning (1903) and Charles Dickens (1906). Prodigiously talented, Chesterton also illustrated a
number of Belloc's light works.
Chesterton spoke of himself as

Masterpiece Cakeshop V. Colorado Civil Rights
Supreme Court cases can be hard to solve, especially since there isn't a guideline for supreme
justices to follow in the Constitution. In the case Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights, no
matter what the outcome is, the Supreme Court is allowing someone's right to be taken away. A big
question today in the supreme court is: Does the 1st amendment overrule other amendments? Or is
the 14th amendment equally important? In the lawsuit Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil
Rights, a cake shop owner denied customers, a same sex couple, the right to get their wedding cake

Some cases end in favor of the same sex couple and others do not. In the Washington Post it is stated
that in the case, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights, President Trump's solicitor general,

an African American sculptor could be forced to make a cross for a Ku Klux Klan event if he made
crosses for the general public" (Konnoth). Because of the 14th amendment, gays, whites, blacks,
women, etc are protected from discrimination. If the law were to go away, it would be every person

Dante's Inferno: The Heavenly Masterpiece
The tale of the afterlife became a masterpiece over the years. Unfortunately this wasn't always the

Inferno is an epic that dealt with the journey of Dante and Virgil. Was a like a mentor to Dante

The Parthenon : A Greek Masterpiece
The Parthenon: A Greek Masterpiece "The most beautiful things in the world are there, Athens...The
sumptuous temple of Athena stands out and is well worth a look. It is called the Parthenon and is on
the hill above the theatre. It makes a tremendous impression on visitors." (Heracleides of Crete, 3rd
century BC) The Parthenon serves as a refined Greek Doric temple design that took approximately 2
centuries to achieve. This magnificent temple began undergoing construction in 447 BCE by
architects Iktinos and Kallikrates as a way to celebrate their victory against the Persians in war.
Phidias was another contributor to the beauty of the Parthenon and also created the notorious Athena
Parthenos statue, which became the centerpiece that the Parthenon was built around. The architects
of the Parthenon wanted to achieve a type of beauty that was erected from proportions that were so
precise they had to use certain mathematical formulas to perfect them. The temple itself is not like
the typical ancient Greek buildings that contain the same sizing when it comes to columns and
width. The Parthenon was like nothing the Greeks had ever achieved before and because of this the
structure had a harmonic lifelike appeal. In addition to being an architectural gem, the temple stands
in the heart of the Athenian Acropolis and adds to the grand city of Athens' gusto. The Parthenon is a
monumental masterpiece that embodies the culture, religion, and vitality of the Ancient Greek
Empire.

William Shakespeare 's World Masterpieces
Today each person has their own story to be told. All of us come from different backgrounds and
have circumstances we are living through. Each of has different type of person we wish to rely on.
As a result of this there are no set standards as to whom we are to date and even marry and why.
Instead, it's a matter of whom each person chooses. Miguel De Cervantes, understood this at a time,
the 1600 's, where this idea of love was not normal. Back then to marry for love was considered
foolish. Traditionally 16th –century love was depicted as Chivalry Romance. This means that it was
to be arranged marriages between those of equal status or class as the norm. Back then love was
seen as a perfect and pure concept. Cervantes did not agree with this and challenged and mocked it
in his writings. As stated by Maynard Mack in his book, World Masterpieces, " The actual method
[Cervantes] followed in order to expose the silliness of the romances of chivalry was to show to
what extraordinary consequences they would lead a man insanely infatuated in them..". Due to this
type of thinking, Cervantes in his novel, Don Quixote, portrays love in a nontraditional way, as a
mysterious force that draws lovers together. Many of the tales of courtship told in Don Quixote are
driven by the force of love. The tale of Quiteria and Basilio is a great example of this. In this tale,
Basilio and Quiteria are next door neighbors in the same village. Basilio falls in love with Quiteria

Masterpieces Always Come With Good Reasons And Fantastic
Masterpieces always come with good reasons and fantastic story telling. On one hand, a good reason
or a logic progress with facts makes a work more convincing; on the other hand, those fantacies and
make–ups show a writer's reflection on facts and reasons he or she received, and are extensions of
those facts and reasons, rendering the work interesting and even more convincing. In three famous
and classic works, On Liberty, Hard Times, and The Communist Manifesto, we can see how writers
combine facts with fictions and compose excellent works.
I. On Liberty by John Stuart Mill

his conclusions; then, changing his way he used to use, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He even chooses such a noble man, to show that we, who do not possess so much wisdom and virtue
as that emperor, should be more careful so that we do not make this mistake.
Furthermore, Mill writes that "It is a bitter thought, how different a thing the Christianity of the
world might have been, if the Chritian faith had been adopted as the religion of the empire under the
auspices of Marcus Aurelius instead of those of Constantine" (On Liberty, John Stuart Mill,
Page.28). Here, Mill makes up a different outcome with the historical fact, that the noble emperor
did not persecute Christianity but supported it. Undoubtly, Mill wants to demonstrate that
Christianity could develop better under the support of Marcus Aurelius with his wisdom and virtue
that nobody could reach. Again, Mill stresses his arguement here that we should be alert with the
mistake that "deny a hearing to opinions because we, in our judgement, have condemned them" (On
Liberty, John Stuart Mill, Page.25) so that we can make things better.
In conclusion, Mill, from two aspects, fact and fiction, stresses his arguement and makes his
arguements more convincing and impressive to readers.
II. Hard Times by Charles Dickens
Hard Times is a novel, so this work can be regarded as a fiction; however, it is also a novel that
reflects facts and satirizes facts. Though the story is fancy, the background really shows British
social conditions at that time. Therefore, in his

Pantheon: A Masterpiece of Roman Architecture
Il Pantheon (Pantheon) "pan" means all, "theon" means God. It is a preserved intact Roman Empire
building, located in the centre of Rome, Italy. It was built in 27–25 BC by Marcus Agrippa, and
Emperor Hadrian rebuilt it in 125 AD. Pantheon is a masterpiece of Roman architecture; it was a
unique building that combined two different styles. Michelangelo praised it as an angel design. It
becomes the object of learning of Italian architects during Renaissance. Besides, many famous
artists such as Raphael were buried here, but also the kings like Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I.
In 609 AD, Byzantine Emperor dedicated Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV; the Pope renamed it as
Santa Maria ad Martyrs, which is the official name of the Pantheon today. Nowadays, Pantheon is
still used as a Catholic church; the people will celebrate the Mass and wedding there. It is also a
world–famous tourist attraction.

Holly Hayes discovered that Pantheon was built by Octavian's lieutenant Agrippa about 27 BC in
order to commemorate Octavian defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the Battle of Actium.
Pantheon was used as a temple to worship the gods of Olympia Mountains during that period but
this original temple was destroyed by fire in AD 80. It only left a rectangular portico and 16 12.5–
meter–high granite columns, which was later rebuilt as part of the pantheon porch.
In AD 125 years, the Roman Emperor Hadrian rebuilt the building. Hadrian was not only a wise

totalitarianism. As a political allegory, 1984 is also Orwell's last work, which is with his greatest

Besides the environment and life, the description of spies in the 1984 are also based on reality.
During the reign of Hitler, German children were encouraged to join the Hitler Youth League, and
they were responsible for monitoring and reporting to the government their parents ' words and
deeds. Orwell uses this source material in 1984, for example, after watching a documentary about a
sinking ship, Winston wrote: "April 4th,1984. Last night to the flicks. All war films. One very good
one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean." and "the helicopter
planted a 20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood (Orwell,
11)." In the two incidents, children are main victims. Orwell puts the story in a familiar environment
to cause the world resonance. Analysis of the Hero Winston Winston, who is 39 years old and
always wears ordinary and shabby clothes, is Orwell's last and most poignant portrait. Through the
characterization of the image of Winston, Orwell wants to reflect and express his political position
and views. At the beginning of the novel, Winston began to have doubts about the nature of society
and its role in it. His attempt to capture the true feelings of the past not only reveals his precarious
situation, but also supports the whole novel. With the help of the character of Winston, Orwell aims
to express his own feelings. Winston

A Masterpiece of Literature, The Adventures of Huckleberry...
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain has been called one of the greatest American
Novels and considered a masterpiece of literature. The book is being taught by teachers across the
country for years. Now, Huckleberry Finn, along with other remarkable novels such as Of Mice and
Men and To Kill a Mockingbird, is being pulled off the shelves of libraries, out of schools and
banned from classrooms because it has been considered unsuitable and racist for today's youth. An
classic American novel like this book should not be banned from schools; it shows history, growth
and friendship.
Mark Twain being raised in a town where slavery existed and slaves were called "niggers" this was
normal for him and wasn't considered offensive to Blacks. This racial term is repeatedly used in the
book and today that word is very offensive to most people, but during the era Twain set the book in
it was not like that. Black people were just called this without any thought to the name. Throughout
the novel, Huck struggles with dealing with how different Jim is, and learns of Jim's heart and
humanity. A word that is commonly used today that we might not find offensive could be in forty
years to other people; because they see a meaning behind the word that actually had no meaning
when it was originally used. Twain was clearly not writing to offend anyone or make it so people
felt uncomfortable teaching it, like he said in the beginning before the novel " Persons attempting to

James Still's River of Earth: A Neglected American Masterpiece
James Still's River of Earth is a novel about life in Appalachia just before the Depression.
Furthermore it is a novel about the struggles of the mountain people since the settlement of their
region. However great it may be at depicting Appalachia's mountain people and culture, though,
Still's novel has remained mostly invisible compared to other novels of the period which depict poor
white southern life, such as John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and Erskine Caldwell's God's Little
Acre (Olson 87).
As scholar Ted Olson notes, there are several reasons for this neglect. First of all, Still's novel has
been labeled as "regional" and therefore not as "universal" in its ... Show more content on

And some critics thought it fudged fact and fiction. Still's novel, on the other hand, which never
caught on with the mainstream, garnered consistently excellent acclaim. W.J. Gold commented that
the story is "told with clarity and strength born of restraint. The economy of its style and the
directness of its aim give evidence of a mature and intelligently used talent" (qtd. Olsen).
In addition, some of the best American writers of the time had great things to say. Robert Frost, for
example, one of the best poets of the Modernist era, commented that he had stayed up all night
reading the novel. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was struck by the novel as well. She called it "vital,
beautiful, heart–breaking and heart–warmingly funny" (Cadle 197).
Many of these critics who advocated for Still's novel tried to make it more publicly known and read.
But in their attempts they took a serious misstep. When speaking of the novel they talked of other
Appalachian writers such as Jesse Stuart and compared Still's work to his work and that of other
regional writers. They made no mention of Grapes of Wrath or other popular books. They just
grouped Still with other Southern and Appalachian writers and said his book was wonderful and
much better than anything Jesse Stuart ever wrote. The problem with this was that most Americans
did not read Jesse Stuart's work and those who had found it to have a kind of fake heartiness, a

The Great Wave Off Kanagawa Japanese Masterpiece
The Great Wave off Kanagawa; a Japanese Masterpiece
Almost instantaneously recognizable, The Great Wave off Kanagawa (woodblock, 10 1/8 x 14 15/16
in, c. 1830–32), created by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1830, beautifully captures the
graceful, swelling movement of a crashing tsunami. Because of the way in which line and
proportion are utilized, this woodblock print gracefully portrays the sheer power of the ocean.
Derived from the Edo period in nineteenth century Japan, this classic was the first of a series of
works from Hokusai titled Thirty–six views of Mount Fuji, all of which effortlessly depict the
mountain in a wide array of angles and scenery. Arguably, The Great Wave off Kanagawa is the
most iconic and cherished piece of Japanese artwork in the world. Even more importantly, Hokusai
is considered prominent father figure for both Japanese art, as well as Western modernization as a
whole. The Great Wave truly displays how tiny and weak man is compared to the force of nature.
Not only is The Great Wave a quintessential piece of art, but it established a piece in the
comprehensive networks of art, trade, and politics, that has instilled a tremendous positive impact on
the twenty first century. Created solely from the vivid imagination of Hokusai, the primary
compositional focus of this simple, but deceptively dynamic print, is the massive deep blue and

An 11th Century Masterpiece Of The Middle Ages
An 11Th Century Masterpiece
What defines a masterpiece? A masterpiece can be defined as an enduring piece of work that has
been widely accepted, as both exceptional and groundbreaking, in a way that greatly influences
society. Masterpieces come in many varieties and forms such as art pieces, music, and architecture.
One of the greatest masterpieces of the Middle Ages, and one that is still standing today, is the Ely
Cathedral. Ely Cathedral's construction began in 1082 and took about three hundred years to be
completed (Clark, William W.). During this time, cathedrals arose out of towns and cities, which
were the natural centers of Christianity. The Middle Ages was a period of great volatility: a time of

The ruling class of the day, consisting of kings, queens and their courts, was deeply intertwined with
the Catholic Church. Etheldreda, queen of East Angles who later became a nun, founded a
monastery in 673 on the grounds that would later become Ely Cathedral. Upon her death and
elevation to sainthood she was enshrined where Ely Cathedral would later rise from the place of the
former monastery at the decree of the Bishop of Bangor. The bishops of the Middle Ages held high
social status and had great influence because of the high roles they held in the state. They were thus
able to spend much of the church's wealth in and around the region of Ely on the creation and
construction of Ely Cathedral (Burton, Edwin). This spending greatly led to the birth of Ely
Cathedral as a social priority. This priority took the form of a broadening of the social structure that
included new trades such as stone cutting, masonry and other forms of skilled labor that led to
artistic endeavors such as sculpting and painting – all directly impacted by cathedral building
("Cathedral Building in the Middle Ages"). Held in very high spiritual and social regard, the
cathedrals throughout Europe, including Ely, commanded a kind of reverence that lasted for
hundreds of years much as the Catholic Church had before the church gradually began to lose hold
of its dominance as the Renaissance began to flourish. Once the Renaissance took hold many
cathedrals, including Ely, were diminished in influence and even damaged or destroyed. Ely,
however, withstood time ("The Cathedrals of

Literature is a powerful and persuasive tool. History holds the proof that a well–written novel, even
a work of fiction, has the power to profoundly impact society. One such novel is Upton Sinclair's
1906 expose of the American immigrant, infamously titled The Jungle. The story is of the trials and
tribulations of a Lithuanian family struggling to earn a living in the slaughterhouses of Chicago. The
issues faced by this family are some of the most disturbing fictional depictions of the lower class,
and some of the most well–read in the past century. The Jungle, now hailed as a literary masterpiece,
is credited with being the reason for the Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat Inspection Act of the
early 1900's (Ewers). Though Sinclair's story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Americans were shocked and horrified by Sinclair's portrayal of the unsanitary conditions of meat
packing facilities, of workers losing fingers into the ground beef, of diseased animal carcasses being
adulterated with chemicals and sent to market (Abrahamson). Though the story was meant to have a
deeper meaning, more specifically a political one, the public was far too disgusted and fascinated by
the details of the food they were purchasing than anything else. The uproar that was caused by
Sinclair's supposed research of these factories received the attention of President Theodore
Roosevelt, who performed research of his own that led to the creation of new food inspection acts.
The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 put tough restrictions on packing facilities, instituting a system
that allowed certified federal meat inspectors to check all carcasses as they traveled throughout the
process. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was the other act created, and it called for the
accurate labeling of all meat products, and gave the government the ability to prosecute plants if
they made false claims concerning what was in their meat or were run under unsanitary or unsafe
conditions (Ewers). These acts calmed the public, and it is assumed that meat processing has greatly
improved and is still operating efficiently

Les Miserables : A French Masterpiece
Les Miserables: A French Masterpiece
Introduction
Victor–Marie Hugo, is possibly the most renowned French author in history. Born on February 26,
1802 in Besancon, France, Hugo was the youngest of three sons of Count Leopold Sigisbert and
Sophie Hugo. Hugo proved himself as a capable writer at a young age gaining Recognition from the
French Academy for a poem he wrote when he was only fifteen. At the age of twenty, he published
his first book of poetry titled Miscellaneous Odes and Verses and earned himself a royal pension
which he used to marry his childhood sweetheart Adele Foucher. Hugo then began to expand his
writing by publishing books such as Hans of Iceland, and The Slave–King (bug Jargal). These
novel's, however seem to be practice runs for his most memorable and impactful works of
literature– The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables.
Despite his professional success, Hugo's personal life was just as dramatic as the captivating works
of literature he produced. During his marriage with Adele, he fathered four children; he outlived
three of them and his daughter needed permanently institutionalization. His wife, Adele, began an
affair with his best friend and critic Charles Augustin Sainte–Beuve and his brother, Eugene, died in
a madhouse fire. After his wife's death, Hugo began a fifty year love affair with actress Juliette
Drouet.
Hugo possessed a great passion for politics. He advocated liberty and justice for the poor and
opposed monarchy

Every Body Is A Masterpiece

  • 1. Every Body Is A Masterpiece Every body is a Masterpiece Fat. Ugly. Skinny. Obese. Slim. Plump. Anorexic. Flabby. Thin. Scrawny. These are just a few terms that are used when people humiliate others on their appearance or body shape; in other words, body shaming. I am very passionate about the topic of body shaming. I believe that society needs to stop sending out images to young girls of the "perfect body" or the idea of "body goals." Everyday, people see tweets or posts on various social networking sites harassing others, like Instagram, Ask.fm, Facebook, and Twitter. These sites give people access to comment on another person's picture if they are following them or if they are not. They will go to any extreme to humiliate others and say things like, " Shut up you're fat" or " What's up with girls nowadays getting too damn skinny? Get some meat on your bones, YOU DON'T LOOK HEALTHY!!". Anywhere you look you will see someone embarrassing another person on their weight or size. Studies show that adolescent girls are more fearful of gaining weight than getting cancer or having a nuclear war (RaderPrograms.com). To think that girls are more frightened of gaining weight than being involved in a war is unperceivable! Another study showed that an average US woman is 5'4" tall weighing 140 pounds and the average US model is 5'11" weighing 117 pounds. How are women suppose to feel confident about their body when models are almost 30 pounds lighter than an average woman's weight? I think most girls fears ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Woman Is The Greatest Masterpiece Created By God Woman is the greatest masterpiece created by God to accompany man in all equality. The complexity and the way of thinking of a woman has always fascinated men throughout the ages. But unfortunately, for centuries, women became underestimated and despised by men. Having no education, they were limited in all their activities. By examining closely the portrait of the woman in religion. Precisely in the Koran and in the Bible, it is clear that the Koran is misogynist compared to the Bible. In the Koran, women are not equal to men, they are not valued as they should be and they are portrayed as sexual objects. "Women are the agent of social transformation who prepare children to enter human society. Beyond this, they are the portals through which all people come into this world"(Frymer–Kensy, 329). No matter what, women will always be important in our world. For the fact that Eve fell into temptation and ate of the fruit of the tree of good and evil, people still have the tendency to blame Eve for the fall of mankind. And it is from this perspective that women began to be underestimated for the next generations to follow. The Koran and Hadiths, which are the traditions of the prophets and the writings of Mohammed, greatly influence the way in which the woman is seen in Islam. The Koran is very misogynist compared the Bible that has demonstrated great respect towards women. The equality of man and woman is a subject that is very often discussed everywhere around the world. Kirstie Wooten Shepherd University Abstract This research looks at the Operatic work 1984 based on the 1949 George Orwell novel of the same name. The research centers on the synopsis of the story, inspirations of both author and composer, performers in the opera, as well as its premiere and review. 1984: An Operatic Retelling of Orwell's Dystopian Masterpiece. As the history of Opera has progressed, characters have become progressively raw and themes increasingly dark. While Comedic Operas delight and entertain spectators, there is just something about controversial, visceral stories that keep audiences yearning for more. This trend does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One running theme of the book is summarized by the haunting government slogan "Who controls the past...controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" The Party aims to have full control over their people, manipulating anything possible to create mind–washed citizens with blind devotion. A tactic of control is The Party's ironically named Ministry of Truth; this organization pays workers to sit and edit various aspects of the past to make The Party look good. For example, throughout the book Chocolate rations are constantly being cut, however, it is constantly advertised as increasing–to accomplish this, party members must physically go into previous articles and change previous remarks that The Party has made. It is in this ministry that protagonist works, which Maazel describes more as an "Anti–hero". Our anti–hero is a thin and almost sickly middle aged man by the name of Winston. His disapproval of the current system and distain for Big Brother is apparent by his diary writings (which are punishable by torture and death, etc.) that immediately spiraled into a subconscious scribbling of "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER". From the very beginning he is aware that his insubordinate thoughts with eventually lead to his inevitable capture and torture. It is not until he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Masterpiece Cake Shop Vs. Colorado: Case Study The case of The Masterpiece Cake Shop vs. Colorado will be argued in court later on this year. This case revolves around the gay couple, Craig and Mullens, who attempted to order a wedding cake for their celebration. To their dismay, the cake shop owner refused to service the couple. Phillips stated that he did not want to design a cake for a same sex couple. Unfortunately, his actions were illegal in the state of Colorado, or were they? Feeling that Phillips had violated their civil rights, the couple filed a complaint against Phillips, the shop owner, with the Civil Rights Commission. The complaint stated that Phillips had violated their rights by refusing to service them solely because they were a same sex couple. Phillips was ordered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The attorney stated that his right to exercise and practice his religion were also being violated. Moreover, his craft of creating cakes is to please God, and same sex marriages are not pleasing to God. Phillips doesn't want to serve anything or anyone that is not pleasing to God. The nondiscriminatory laws and the people who wrote them would disagree. But, because of the nature of this situation, this could go either way. Especially since the president and his lawyers have weighed in supporting the cake shop owner, his religious belief and his right to exercise them. I guess this is what the president meant when he says he'll protect our civil liberties. Because of the governments involvement, the verdict may swing Phillips way setting precedence in the US. The courts and the state have another dilemma on their hands. We will have to wait a while to see how this plays out in court and the media. But one thing we do know, Craig and Mullens won their case in the states and Phillips will not bake another designer wedding cake unless he wins in the supreme court. The courts may use their implied powers against Phillips and punish him for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This claim is based upon an argument meant to highlight the discriminatory nature of refusing service within a public accommodation. The actions of Masterpiece Cakeshop, first, violate the Colorado Anti–Discrimination Law as the bakery exists as a public accommodation, rather than an individualized entity. Second, it is invalid to believe Phillips was discriminatory on the grounds of conduct rather than character as one cannot exist without the other; thereby, Phillips cannot choose to abstain from baking cakes for same–sex marriages due to religious beliefs without denying service to same–sex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, Colorado, like many other states, took it upon itself to outline protections to classes not originally included within the Constitution. Outlined within the 10th Amendment of the Constitution, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people" (U.S. Constitution). Upon those grounds, the Colorado Anti–Discrimination Act ("CADA") was created to effectively prohibit businesses open to the community from refusing full and equal services based on aspects of one's identity– this includes, but is not limited to, sexual orientation. The relevant provision of this act is found in Section 24–34–601(2) a), C.R.S. 2014, "It is a discriminatory practice and unlawful for a person, directly or indirectly, to refuse, withhold from, or deny to an individual or a group, because of ... sexual orientation ... the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of a place of public accommodation ..." (CADA, 2016). At its most simple, the Phillips' actions blatantly violate this state law. Although Phillips offered Craig and Mullins baked goods for any other occasion, he would not sell them baked goods for a same–sex wedding; thus, denying equal and full enjoyment of products that would be available to any heterosexual ... Molieres Tartuffe a Masterpiece of French Literature Essay Molieres Tartuffe a Masterpiece of French Literature Moliére's Tartuffe has long been considered a masterpiece of French Literature for its powerful social commentary, finely sculptured characters and its presentation of moral theme. While Tartuffe stands soundly on its own merits, its curiosity and impact for audiences both within its own period and for contemporary productions are heightened by the history surrounding its original presentation. Tartuffe was written and produced in a sensitive time for a sensitive audience. King Louis XIV sat upon a throne made uneasy with the plotting and dissent of multiple and powerful factions. Despite appeals to King Louis, Moliére was refused permission to stage the play for the general public. For the next three years Moliére continued to present Tartuffe at private gatherings hoping to garner the support he needed to reverse the interdiction against the play's performance. Late in 1664 Moliére was able to get the approval of the legate Chili for the performance of Tartuffe. This approval gave Moliére grounds to submit a new petition to the King. The King, again, denied the petition. Adding insult to injury, Moliére's one time sponsor the Prince de Conti wrote a treatise against the stage in which he accused Moliére of being an atheist. Given the renewed campaign against him, Moliére's hopes for producing Tartuffe in 1666 were dashed. On August 5, 1667, operating on a secret agreement with the King, Moliére presented The Imposter (A milder version of Tartuffe). The King was not present for the opening as he was encamped with his army at Flanders. This would prove troublesome for Moliére when the Church moved to stop further performances of The Imposter and he found himself without what he supposed to be his most important ally, King Louis. Analysis of “Dark Shadows” as a Gothic Masterpiece Analysis of "Dark Shadows" as a Gothic Masterpiece To most, when asked to define what Gothic is, they will state that it is similar to any other story, just with more "darkness." This is because Gothic stories all have a classic story line. First, there is the main character's back story, if any is then told. Next, there are events that lead up to a horrible incident that is the climax of the story. Lastly, the character finds some way to fix the situation or free him– or herself from it. They might go insane, commit suicide, run away, or watch other characters perish. While the light hurt him, he was able to merely wear a hat and cloak and not be harmed. However, there is still much more to Gothic Literature. According to Baldick, "For the Gothic effect to be attained, a tale should combine a fearful sense of inheritance in time with a claustrophobic sense of enclosure in space" (xix). A story can have Gothic tropes but not be Gothic. There are loads of books that have murders and ghosts that aren't considered Gothic at all, like Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. His parents were killed and there was a ghost trapped in the girl's bathroom, but it isn't Gothic at all. What makes a story Gothic is how it is told or portrayed. Sometimes, the scenes that are used are to make the viewers question what is righteous and what is wicked. Burton shows this with how he introduces his characters and their personalities. For the vampire Barnabas, he is portrayed not as monster but as an unfortunate soul who has a curse that he is trying to rid himself of. Instead of wanting to stay a vampire, he joins up with a local physician to try and find a cure to make him human again. However, he still kills humans and drinks their blood. In this cinematic depiction, thirty scientists are sent to an identical Earth–like planet where the residents there have had their renaissance and scientific enlightenment periods completely suppressed and anything considered remotely "intellectual" is destroyed and so society was forced to be frozen in the Middle Ages indefinitely. This significantly distracts the reader from the subject of the 9/11 Memorial and requires his audience to have outside knowledge of famous monuments and designs. Moreover, he demonstrates an obvious dislike of the museum portion of the project, expressing that "the pavilion's nervously off–kilter, exaggeratedly slant–roofed form imparts the deeply disquieting appearance of a building in collapse, which under these circumstances seems not merely unfortunate but downright tactless". Masterpiece is about not worrying about the people that hate on you and embracing yourself. It's about growing as a person into your masterpiece and that is why it is my theme song. I'd say this year has been the best year of my middle school experience. Last year was probably my worst year in academics, behavior, and self–love. I disliked my school, the teachers, and most of the people in it. I felt like no one was on my side. This year has been so different. I feel like I've excelled at academics, sports, and friendships, and it all started when I came to MME. The atmosphere was so different. It was comforting to feel that the teachers were there to help you learn from your mistakes instead of dwelling on them. I met many good friends who have made my year so much better. I can relate to this because this year I've learned not to care what people talk about you or what they say. I know I mess up all the time, but I don't care as much what people say about me. In the previous years I would think people were always looking at how I acted or what I wore; now I dress how I want to dress and it makes me a happier person. The portable camera obscura invented in the 17th century could be moved around and used both indoors and outdoors. It should be noted here that if Vermeer placed such a portable camera obscura on the table, the height of the lens would correspond to the height of the windowsill in Vermeer's home, which is the same level of the viewing points in many of his paintings (Koningsberger 139). It is called the Parthenon and is on the hill above the theatre. It makes a tremendous impression on visitors." (Heracleides of Crete, 3rd century BC) The Parthenon serves as a refined Greek Doric temple design that took approximately 2 centuries to achieve. This magnificent temple began undergoing construction in 447 BCE by architects Iktinos and Kallikrates as a way to celebrate their victory against the Persians in war. Phidias was another contributor to the beauty of the Parthenon and also created the notorious Athena Parthenos statue, which became the centerpiece that the Parthenon was built around. The architects of the Parthenon wanted to achieve a type of beauty that was erected from proportions that were so precise they had to use certain mathematical formulas to perfect them. The temple itself is not like the typical ancient Greek buildings that contain the same sizing when it comes to columns and width. The Parthenon was like nothing the Greeks had ever achieved before and because of this the structure had a harmonic lifelike appeal. In addition to being an architectural gem, the temple stands in the heart of the Athenian Acropolis and adds to the grand city of Athens' gusto. The Parthenon is a monumental masterpiece that embodies the culture, religion, and vitality of the Ancient Greek Empire. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. William Shakespeare 's World Masterpieces Today each person has their own story to be told. All of us come from different backgrounds and have circumstances we are living through. Each of has different type of person we wish to rely on. As a result of this there are no set standards as to whom we are to date and even marry and why. Instead, it's a matter of whom each person chooses. Miguel De Cervantes, understood this at a time, the 1600 's, where this idea of love was not normal. Back then to marry for love was considered foolish. Traditionally 16th –century love was depicted as Chivalry Romance. This means that it was to be arranged marriages between those of equal status or class as the norm. Back then love was seen as a perfect and pure concept. Cervantes did not agree with this and challenged and mocked it in his writings. As stated by Maynard Mack in his book, World Masterpieces, " The actual method [Cervantes] followed in order to expose the silliness of the romances of chivalry was to show to what extraordinary consequences they would lead a man insanely infatuated in them..". Due to this type of thinking, Cervantes in his novel, Don Quixote, portrays love in a nontraditional way, as a mysterious force that draws lovers together. Many of the tales of courtship told in Don Quixote are driven by the force of love. The tale of Quiteria and Basilio is a great example of this. In this tale, Basilio and Quiteria are next door neighbors in the same village. Basilio falls in love with Quiteria at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Masterpieces Always Come With Good Reasons And Fantastic Masterpieces always come with good reasons and fantastic story telling. On one hand, a good reason or a logic progress with facts makes a work more convincing; on the other hand, those fantacies and make–ups show a writer's reflection on facts and reasons he or she received, and are extensions of those facts and reasons, rendering the work interesting and even more convincing. In three famous and classic works, On Liberty, Hard Times, and The Communist Manifesto, we can see how writers combine facts with fictions and compose excellent works. I. On Liberty by John Stuart Mill In his work On Liberty, Mill starts from historical facts, analysing facts using his reasons and gets his conclusions; then, changing his way he used to use, he ... He even chooses such a noble man, to show that we, who do not possess so much wisdom and virtue as that emperor, should be more careful so that we do not make this mistake. Furthermore, Mill writes that "It is a bitter thought, how different a thing the Christianity of the world might have been, if the Chritian faith had been adopted as the religion of the empire under the auspices of Marcus Aurelius instead of those of Constantine" (On Liberty, John Stuart Mill, Page.28). Here, Mill makes up a different outcome with the historical fact, that the noble emperor did not persecute Christianity but supported it. Undoubtly, Mill wants to demonstrate that Christianity could develop better under the support of Marcus Aurelius with his wisdom and virtue that nobody could reach. Again, Mill stresses his arguement here that we should be alert with the mistake that "deny a hearing to opinions because we, in our judgement, have condemned them" (On Liberty, John Stuart Mill, Page.25) so that we can make things better. In conclusion, Mill, from two aspects, fact and fiction, stresses his arguement and makes his arguements more convincing and impressive to readers. II. Hard Times by Charles Dickens Hard Times is a novel, so this work can be regarded as a fiction; however, it is also a novel that reflects facts and satirizes facts. • 61. A Masterpiece of Literature, The Adventures of Huckleberry... The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain has been called one of the greatest American Novels and considered a masterpiece of literature. The book is being taught by teachers across the country for years. Now, Huckleberry Finn, along with other remarkable novels such as Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird, is being pulled off the shelves of libraries, out of schools and banned from classrooms because it has been considered unsuitable and racist for today's youth. An classic American novel like this book should not be banned from schools; it shows history, growth and friendship. Mark Twain being raised in a town where slavery existed and slaves were called "niggers" this was normal for him and wasn't considered offensive to Blacks. This racial term is repeatedly used in the book and today that word is very offensive to most people, but during the era Twain set the book in it was not like that. Black people were just called this without any thought to the name. Throughout the novel, Huck struggles with dealing with how different Jim is, and learns of Jim's heart and humanity. A word that is commonly used today that we might not find offensive could be in forty years to other people; because they see a meaning behind the word that actually had no meaning when it was originally used. Twain was clearly not writing to offend anyone or make it so people felt uncomfortable teaching it, like he said in the beginning before the novel " Persons attempting to find a ... James Still's River of Earth: A Neglected American Masterpiece James Still's River of Earth is a novel about life in Appalachia just before the Depression. Furthermore it is a novel about the struggles of the mountain people since the settlement of their region. However great it may be at depicting Appalachia's mountain people and culture, though, Still's novel has remained mostly invisible compared to other novels of the period which depict poor white southern life, such as John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and Erskine Caldwell's God's Little Acre (Olson 87). As scholar Ted Olson notes, there are several reasons for this neglect. First of all, Still's novel has been labeled as "regional" and therefore not as "universal" in its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And some critics thought it fudged fact and fiction. Still's novel, on the other hand, which never caught on with the mainstream, garnered consistently excellent acclaim. W.J. Gold commented that the story is "told with clarity and strength born of restraint. The economy of its style and the directness of its aim give evidence of a mature and intelligently used talent" (qtd. Olsen). In addition, some of the best American writers of the time had great things to say. Robert Frost, for example, one of the best poets of the Modernist era, commented that he had stayed up all night reading the novel. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was struck by the novel as well. She called it "vital, beautiful, heart–breaking and heart–warmingly funny" (Cadle 197). Many of these critics who advocated for Still's novel tried to make it more publicly known and read. But in their attempts they took a serious misstep. When speaking of the novel they talked of other Appalachian writers such as Jesse Stuart and compared Still's work to his work and that of other regional writers. They made no mention of Grapes of Wrath or other popular books. They just grouped Still with other Southern and Appalachian writers and said his book was wonderful and much better than anything Jesse Stuart ever wrote. The problem with this was that most Americans did not read Jesse Stuart's work and those who had found it to have a kind of fake heartiness, a certain forced quality (Olsen ... The Great Wave Off Kanagawa Japanese Masterpiece The Great Wave off Kanagawa; a Japanese Masterpiece Almost instantaneously recognizable, The Great Wave off Kanagawa (woodblock, 10 1/8 x 14 15/16 in, c. 1830–32), created by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1830, beautifully captures the graceful, swelling movement of a crashing tsunami. Because of the way in which line and proportion are utilized, this woodblock print gracefully portrays the sheer power of the ocean. Derived from the Edo period in nineteenth century Japan, this classic was the first of a series of works from Hokusai titled Thirty–six views of Mount Fuji, all of which effortlessly depict the mountain in a wide array of angles and scenery. Arguably, The Great Wave off Kanagawa is the most iconic and cherished piece of Japanese artwork in the world. Even more importantly, Hokusai is considered prominent father figure for both Japanese art, as well as Western modernization as a whole. The Great Wave truly displays how tiny and weak man is compared to the force of nature. Not only is The Great Wave a quintessential piece of art, but it established a piece in the comprehensive networks of art, trade, and politics, that has instilled a tremendous positive impact on the twenty first century. Created solely from the vivid imagination of Hokusai, the primary compositional focus of this simple, but deceptively dynamic print, is the massive deep blue and white wave located in the left foreground of the work. A masterpiece can be defined as an enduring piece of work that has been widely accepted, as both exceptional and groundbreaking, in a way that greatly influences society. Masterpieces come in many varieties and forms such as art pieces, music, and architecture. One of the greatest masterpieces of the Middle Ages, and one that is still standing today, is the Ely Cathedral. Ely Cathedral's construction began in 1082 and took about three hundred years to be completed (Clark, William W.). During this time, cathedrals arose out of towns and cities, which were the natural centers of Christianity. The ruling class of the day, consisting of kings, queens and their courts, was deeply intertwined with the Catholic Church. Etheldreda, queen of East Angles who later became a nun, founded a monastery in 673 on the grounds that would later become Ely Cathedral. Upon her death and elevation to sainthood she was enshrined where Ely Cathedral would later rise from the place of the former monastery at the decree of the Bishop of Bangor. The bishops of the Middle Ages held high social status and had great influence because of the high roles they held in the state. They were thus able to spend much of the church's wealth in and around the region of Ely on the creation and construction of Ely Cathedral (Burton, Edwin). This spending greatly led to the birth of Ely Cathedral as a social priority. This priority took the form of a broadening of the social structure that included new trades such as stone cutting, masonry and other forms of skilled labor that led to artistic endeavors such as sculpting and painting – all directly impacted by cathedral building ("Cathedral Building in the Middle Ages"). Held in very high spiritual and social regard, the cathedrals throughout Europe, including Ely, commanded a kind of reverence that lasted for hundreds of years much as the Catholic Church had before the church gradually began to lose hold of its dominance as the Renaissance began to flourish. Once the Renaissance took hold many cathedrals, including Ely, were diminished in influence and even damaged or destroyed. Ely, however, withstood time ("The Cathedrals of ... One such novel is Upton Sinclair's 1906 expose of the American immigrant, infamously titled The Jungle. The issues faced by this family are some of the most disturbing fictional depictions of the lower class, and some of the most well–read in the past century. The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 put tough restrictions on packing facilities, instituting a system that allowed certified federal meat inspectors to check all carcasses as they traveled throughout the process.
