Introduction Thinking about how education is taught in schools and all the different pedagogical
practices makes me wonder what these practices are actually fulfilling. There are many different
ways to approach a classroom environment. An individual can look at things from the student's
perspective, the teacher's perspectives, or just the way the classroom functions altogether. I reflect
on when I was in high school and, after learning in detail about all of these pedagogies, I can easily
say that the classrooms I was taught in were combinations of multiple pedagogies. I believe as
someone becoming a teacher we need to refine how the classroom should be run, and what the
student and teacher's role should be. I think we need to shift our focus to an open–minded and open
environment pedagogy. I mean this in the sense that the environment should be an open place, a safe
haven, the students can speak their minds and beliefs freely. I myself too many times have been in a
classroom where I have felt restricted, bounded and unable to voice what I believe in because of the
way the classroom was run. Along with this, we need to be open–minded in the sense of viewing

Introduction: In this paper I will present the arguments for tropes and their distinction from
universals and particulars as presented by Keith Campbell in his paper "The Metaphysic of Abstract
Particulars." I will then present a counter argument to Campbell's evaluation and provide possible
responses to those arguments. I will also provide possible adjustments Campbell could make to
create a more sound argument.
Campbell's Argument:
Since Plato, two mutually exclusive yet essential categories of reality have been posited, one of
concrete particulars and the other being abstract universals. Particulars are "unproblematic," but
universals may be entirely extant in many positions with no influence on the universal itself. A
particular "distinguishing mark is that is exhausted in the one embodiment, or occasion, or
example." (Campbell 298) Particulars are unproblematic because they are restricted to a single point
at any given time, not like universals which exist in different locations and are wholly present in
those instances. The number of examples which contain the abstract universals are not diminished in
quality of the universal. Campbell posits that this "problem" can be alleviated if properties were not
universal at all. There is a distinction between abstract and concrete which differs from the

however, she does uses pigments mixed with water that are then lightly brushed onto a piece of

The colors have a mostly high value and equally low and high saturation. Seeing as this is a non–
representational piece of art, I can only say local color is being used.
Though it's safe to say no color goes unused in this work, I notice a lot of usage of blues/purples,
reds, and yellows. I believe he uses these colors to convey the message he is sending. The color
gives the painting a lot of emotion, as if you're looking at a sad mood turn into a bright happy one.
In addition to its emotional effect, I can visualize the bright yellow at the top of the painting
representing the sun. I can gather this from the title, as if the sun's yellow rays are "glistening" on
the blue hues below, possibly water.
The color scheme of the painting looks as if it's somewhere along the lines of complementary and
analogous. The colors contrast each other, but also compliment them in a very specific way. It is
very clear with the splashes of red on the blue down in the bottom left corner. This work has a very
open palette, as you can tell by the usage of many colors. The color is very expressionistic. The
intentional variation of the color speaks volumes of the mood being portrayed. When standing in
front of the painting, the dominating warm colors seem to disregard the sad blues and purples,

Colour can be defined as the result of light hitting an object and its resulting perception based on the
physics of sight or the eye. Artist have been theorising and implementing colour and colour
relationships for many years, and through many artist/art movements. Successful use and
understanding of colour can elevate a particular piece of art far beyond any that do not successfully
implement colour and its various elements. For this essay I will explore the painting "Wo ist Ein
Zigarrengeschäft" (1954) by Jean Phillipe Dallaire(Fig 1–3). In this exploration I will examine
aspects of this painting which include Dallaire 's use of form, and colour. While also considering
briefly Dallaire 's painting in in comparison to Jean Dubuffet 's, painting "The Dandy"(1954)(Fig 4).
Both paintings originate from the same era with two artist interpretations of colour and form, and
two sets of techniques. Before considering the painting itself I will examine the artist himself, as this
will help in understanding his painting, "Wo ist Ein Zigarrengeschäft"(1954). Jean Dallaire (1916–
1965), is a Canadian artist who was known for his work as a painter, illustrator, and professor. His
