Impact Of The Nigerian Presidential Amnesty Program
In this paper, I estimate the impact of the Nigerian Presidential Amnesty Program (Amnesty), a local
form of Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR), on crude oil production in Nigeria.
The President of Nigeria announced the program on June 25th, 2009 which aimed to put an end to the
insurgency crisis experienced in the Niger Delta region, particularly between 2006 2009 which had led
to an average loss of about 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day (cited in Asuni, 2009) and which had
major implications for the government s revenue. Militants were given the opportunity for a state
pardon by submitting their weapons in exchange for empowerment training and monthly stipends of
N65,000 per month. I used a difference in difference approach and the results indicate an average
increase of about 73% in crude oil production in the treated states.
The production and export data for this work was retrieved from the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC) database, the regulating body for the Oil and Gas industry, beginning from Q1,
2005, to Q4, 2013. I also collected crude oil prices from the British Petroleum website. Although the
Amnesty Program led to a significant increase in oil production, it does not necessarily suggest it is
the best policy that could have been adopted due to its challenges. Introduction The Niger Delta
region, the Nigeria crude oil base, had witnessed numerous protests at various times by its citizens
over resource wealth and control.

Abstract Because streams play important roles in ecosystems and also provide drinking water for
humans, this experiment was performed to determine if water velocity affects the health of a stream.
For our purposes, water heath was determined by concentrations of dissolved oxygen. We predicted
that areas of higher water velocity would have a lower chlorophyll a concentration and higher
dissolved oxygen concentration. We collected six samples of water from Wild Basin Preserve in
Austin, TX, three from areas of still water and three from areas of running water. We measured the

Streams in urban areas are vulnerable to the effects of deforestation, creation of roads, and the release
of toxins into the environment (Walsh et. al 2005). These anthropogenic activities affect the
biodiversity of ecosystems in streams and negatively impact the stream s health. This experiment was
executed for the purpose of diagnosing the health of a stream located in Wild Basin, a natural park in
Austin, TX. Our goal was to determine how the movement of water affects the quality of the water.
Measuring chlorophyll a concentrations is one way to determine the health of a stream, because it is
the main photosynthetic pigment in periphyton. Periphyton is a primary producer in stream ecosystem
and provides information about conditions within the stream. An abundance of periphyton positively
affects an ecosystem because periphyton absorbs metals and nutrients and provides a significant
component of the food resources to other species (Gray 2013). However, it is also important to
measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen in streams to determine the health. If the concentration
of periphyton is too high, there will be a large amount of primary and secondary consumers that
migrate to the location and deplete the concentration of oxygen. For our study, we hypothesized that

potential fever. These symptoms alone make people want to be extra careful when picking out their
produce at the supermarket. The hardest part of these outbreaks are that people are dealing with raw
spouts. Raw sprouts can be a great carrier of these pathogens, and there are no one way to get rid of

Data In looking at the raw data, all but one of my five sixth grade students in my class scored below
the 50 percentile. This shows a need for fluency instruction and possibly a reason why students
struggle in the area of reading comprehension. I administered the fifth grade level passage of the
words per minute assessment, all of my students were reading at an independent level, but struggle to
read the text fluently, thus affecting their comprehension. Most of the students scored 3/5 on
comprehension part of the assessment. Based on this data it is clear that my students need some
aspects of fluency instruction. Because I had seven students total in my class, I did a whole class
choral reading lesson with the entire group. The two readers I did not assess I knew would benefit

The University 12 Miles Away
My college education began not at the institution about which I am writing, but rather another
university 12 miles away. For two years, I attended Maryville University in St. Louis with a triple
major in English, psychology, and sociology. Maryville University s campus was small with just three
small academic buildings on campus. As I progressed from my freshman to my sophomore year, I
realized I had outgrown the small campus that had once felt comfortable. With only one key faculty
member in each of my major departments, the classes had become predictable. When the spring of my
sophomore year arrived, I decided to transfer to Webster University where I could learn from a larger
faculty with varied points of view. Although I did not spend all four years of my undergraduate career
at Webster University, I have great affection for it. The campus was a mix of recently constructed
academic buildings and repurposed historical homes in the St. Louis suburb of Webster Groves,
including the English department s home: Pearson House. The amalgamation of buildings added a
sense of both the past and the future to the university s campus; however, as a student, I was unaware
of the history behind the campus I grew to love. Coincidentally, Webster University is celebrating its
centennial this academic year.

The State Of The Environment
The State of the Environment in William Gibson s Neuromancer In William Gibson s Neuromancer
the natural world has become virtually nonexistent. The environment has essentially been destroyed
and replaced with man made technology, and anything genuinely natural has become unfamiliar and
even intimidating to humans. People in the dystopian society of Neuromancer are able to manipulate
the ecological world to an incredible extent, so much so that even the human body has become
unnatural through the use of medical technology such as artificial organs. However, despite the
incredible abilities of technology in Neuromancer, certain imperfections show that humans are still
incapable of recreating everything that they have destroyed, and thus Gibson is encouraging
environmental preservation in the underlying themes of his book. Gibson s portrayal of the
environment, or lack thereof, in this future dystopia represents his fear of what the world would
become if humans were to abandon nature. It is regrettably clear from the beginning of the novel that
even the few aspects of nature that have not been destroyed by human activity are no longer viewed
with admiration, nor do they contain beauty like they do in the real world; they are dull, gray, and
unnerving.
Gibson reveals the state of the environment in the opening of the book, and implies humans lack of
connection with nature using one of the most inherently natural features of the planet. Rather than the
