Common Practices in Religion
Although religions today take on many shapes and forms, and may seem so dramatically different
from each other, in order to study and understand these religions, their similarities must be identified.
This paper will first present a definition of religion that will connect to all religions at the simplest
base. Then this paper will examine the common practices and experiences that are present in both the
primary religions of the world, as well as the indigenous religions. Finally, this paper will discuss the
issues that are critical to the academic study of religions.
Definition of Religion

Michael Malloy identifies several of these critical issues in his book Experiencing the World s
Religions (2013). The first of these questions is whether the religion can truly be observed or is the act
of study changing the events observe, thus invalidating the research. If the religion cannot be seen
without altering the ceremony and culture, then study will only provide information on what the
observer can change, rather than what the religion is. Secondly, can the major religions be classified
into such groups, can all the Buddhist sects be labeled as Buddhist, or must the religions be taken
individually, and who makes the decision of what to label the religion. Lastly, the issue of experiences
of the religion by different interior groups. A researcher must ask what the various experiences of the
religions are between men and women, or the experiences of a child, adolescent, adult, and elder.
Also, a researcher must ask how the ceremonies are different for the converted if the religion allows
for converts.
Conclusion
This paper has presented a definition of religion, as well as an examination of its parts to determine if
the definition is adequate to apply appropriately. Secondly, this paper has examined several practices
and experiences common to both major religions of the worlds, as well as indigenous religions. Lastly,
the key critical issues of the study of religions and reasons for their consideration have been identified
and discussed.

Conflicts That Arise from Particular Ways of Seeing the...
TRIAL ESSAY Conflicts that arise from particular ways of seeing the world are made evident through
the shaping of texts. In Barry Levinson s film Wag the Dog and Michael Moore s documentary
Fahrenheit 9/11 , it is clear that the perspectives in which the audience views the world create
particular conflicts. In both texts, the conflicting perspectives arise from the way the naïve public
views the world and the way that the government and media view the world through their particular
agendas. In Wag the Dog , the plot relies on the alleged sexual impropriety of the president and the
way in which particular political powers and the media intervene. In the film it is clear that the
audience is seeing two perspectives, that of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The audience is extremely aware of this through the use of the Albanian girl scene where through
filming and editing, the American people are manipulated into believing a lie. Levinson uses dramatic
irony here to emphasise this point to the viewers, who know what the public in the film do not. Brean
s assertion of we are giving them what they want is indicative of a public who remember the slogans
but don t remember the wars . As Brean satirises the perspective of the outsider s the view in which
the American people see the world is seen, especially through the use of the Albanian girl where the
audience literally sees what the audience in the film sees and believes. As Brean uses repetition in
referring to the Gulf War of 91, the audience witnesses the verisimilitude that the public so easily
succumbs to. Though, his character is portrayed in a different light at the end of the film through the
death of Stanley Motts. In this scene his character shifts to that of a menacing, powerful figure. Even
though the audience is aware of his significance and power throughout the entire film, the fact that he
is the one that orders for Motts to be killed further extrapolates on the idea that the public is naïve to
image, as even the audience watching the film believes that the character of Brean would not commit
such an act. As a close up is utilised at a high angle, high key lighting

Euthanasia Should Be Allowed To Die Research Paper
To have the right to be assisted to die or to not have the right to be assisted to die, that is the question.
An individual can have their lives turn upside down with merely a sentence being told to them. With
the countless procedures performed, we are lament to say, there is no cure. Just with fourteen words
being said, all hope is lost. What is the point of living on if all that is being felt is pure utter pain?
These individuals that have already been told they have a terminal illness should be given their rights
to end their lives. Being exempt from pure excruciating and unbearable pain is immoral; having said
that, doctors should allow their patients to commit assisted suicide.
Differentiating between euthanasia and assisted suicide is essential when discussing the right to die.
When a third party has performed the last act in the patient s death, euthanasia has occurred. When a
lethal injection is presented to the patient and the patient decides to insert it into their veins, assisted
suicide has been partaken. The patient should have a right to decide whether or not they would like to
continue living or perish. The doctor should not be the one in control when advocating the decision
their patient would like to commit. Euthanasia makes the doctor the primary source to what should
happen with their patient. Assisted suicide should be promoted instead of Euthanasia due to the fact
that the patient overall decides their final fate.

How Memories From The Brain Is Capable Of Retrieving...
Every time I learn the name of a student, I forget the name of a fish was once said by David Jordan,
the president of Stanford University (Anderson, Bjork Bjork, 2000). This statement is interesting
because it brings up the idea of the amount of information one can consume and maintain available at
any given time; this information is put into memory. Memory is the process of maintaining,
recovering, and applying information about episodes and events, when the original material is not
current (Goldstein, 2008, p. 136). This definition mean even if we have not just experience that
memory, our brain can go back in time and retrieve what has happened hours, days or years ago.
Retrieving memories from the brain is the process of relocating material from Long Term Memory
(LTM) back into working memory, where it becomes available through consciousness (Goldstein,
2008, p. 197). Our brain is capable of retrieving information because it has been encoded. Encoding is
the process of obtaining information then converting it into memories, in which goes onto our LTM
(Goldstein, 2008, p. 196). The main claim of this essay is that is that if a memory is encoded correctly,
then that is all that is needed for memory failure or success and the process of retrieving memories
also relies on the encoding of the memory. Meanwhile, this claim that encoding is all that is needed
for memory failure or success was researched by Craik and Lockhart (1972, as described by
Goldstein, 2008, p.

Microeconomics Essay
Microeconomics Essay The price of electricity has increased substantially in the last three years, as a
result of that; there have been apparent changes in the demand for electricity for the consumers and it
has affected the producers supply market. In the following essay, we are going to look at the effect of
the increase in the price of electricity in South Africa, using the supply and demand framework. The
reason for the increase of the price of electricity is to balance out the supply and demand of electricity.
The National Energy Regulators of South Africa (NERSA) has approved a 25% increase of the price
of electricity for 3years starting from 2010 (Roodt, 2012). Supply and demand are fundamental
principles of economics, it is what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The increase in the price of electricity is equivalent to an increase in the cost of production. The law of
supply states that an increase in the cost of production will cause a decrease in the supply, provided
everything else stays constant (Parkin, 2010).We can clearly see this in diagram C, when the price
increased from P1 to P2, the supply curve shifts from S1 to S2, therefore decreasing the quantity
supplied from Q1 to Q2. The equilibrium also shifts from E1 to E2. As time passes the mining
industry will have enough time to adjust to the increase in the price of the electricity, which increased
the cost of production. The supply curve of the mining industry will become more inelastic, this is
because in the long run, the suppliers will find other more sufficient methods to produce gold with less
energy. So when the price does increase again, the change in the quantity demanded will be affect
much less. This is shown in Diagram C, when the S2 becomes S3, we can see that the supply curve is
becoming more vertical, indicating that the supply curve is more inelastic. And in the long run, the
only thing that changes is the elasticity of the supply curve, the quantity supplied and the equilibrium
remains the same.
3
We can conclude the essay by stating that as the price increases for electricity, the demand for the
electricity by the households will decrease

Importance Of Water Conservation Essay
Water, the source of life, is essential in supporting both our daily and business activities. In our daily
activities, we need water to make food, to shower, to wash clothes, and to drink to maintain our body
energy, etc. In business activities, we need water to operate restaurant, hotel facilities like spas and hot
tubs, and to generate power, etc. Based on how much we rely on water, there needs no further
emphasis on the importance of water in our lives. Yet, water, this finite resource, is getting more and
more scarce due to either excessive use of water or poor awareness of water conservation. And as
human develops and industrialization process speeds up, our demand for water has become greater
and greater. If we do not pay attention to water conservation, the situation will get worse, which will
lead to drought and affect the nature at the worse. Therefore, it is our responsibility to conserve water
in our daily life, and more importantly in our business operations. According to a report conducted by
United States Environmental Protection Agency, hotels and restaurants water usage account for fifteen
percent of the total water use in commercial and institutional facilities in the United States (Saving
Water), so there are many opportunities to conserve water in these two sectors, and we are going to
discuss what can be done and how exactly do some restaurants and hotels do to conserve water. From
the time a restaurant is open, to the time it is closed, from prepping

San Diego Environmental Impacts
Climate change is affecting humans every day, and yet most of us have found that every region of the
globe is affected in some way or another. For us here in San Diego, California, in the Western
Hemisphere, on the west coast, United States, North America, that impact is felt mostly with rising sea
temperatures and rising sea levels. There are noticeable predictions that by 2050, rising sea levels here
will rise as stated: At least a 16 inch sea level rise is expected in San Diego, Ca by 2050, with a
projected rise of 50% by the turn of the century. San Diego, Ca has several beaches locally therefore
this is a concern here. There are multiple beachfront properties and businesses that would be impacted
by loss of profit margins, and potentially flooding if this was to occur. The property losses would
potentially be in the millions and this does not take into consideration the impact that sea mammals
would feel. By 2100, the projected sea level rise (SLR) would be 5 meters above normal...and some
widely projected margins estimate those 7 23 inches possible for SLR in the coming years. The Fourth
Assessment (4AR) by the IPCC of 2001 gives these projections for the 21st. century. Certainly not
current by any means however these projections are for this current century. Any sea level rise would
have serious impacts on creeks, streams, rivers estuaries, watersheds and local beaches. These would

Vertical Integrations Essay
The size and efficiency of the firm depend upon the supply chain and various different activities which
are included in house. The supply chain activities, product, and services are produced by the firms
depends upon the vertical and horizontal boundaries of the company. Vertical boundaries are the
process where the company produces its own raw material and ends it by distributing and selling of
those finish goods which are obtained from the raw material. But if firm carries out buying the
material from the other firms and carrying out more than one supply chain process it is termed as
vertical integrations which include upstream suppliers and downstream buyers. Upstream suppliers are
nothing but when a firm obtaining the raw materials from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The firms following the horizontal boundary are more efficient as the firm produce multiple products
through in house or narrowing it to the few products and increasing the rationales by economies of
scope and transaction costs. The economies scope rises in distribution of goods and services routed to
several markets. The firms selling variety of products in market can enjoy economies of scope in
advertising themselves. The horizontal integrations actually works by acquiring or by creating the
production units for the product output in the market to increase their market share by increasing the
economic share and economies scale in the market. By having the horizontal integration the firm can
show their presence and strength in the market even by distributing and routing their goods and
services. For example, GE firm has variety of products and services like Universal pictures, universal
parks, medical systems (William Boyes, 2012). etc., where it has more market economic share and
economies of scope. Horizontal integration also helps in promoting the business and also reduces
completion as firm focuses on different production unit which helps firm s economic share and
economies of scope. I agree that the firm need to be horizontally integrated as it will have more

Free-Will Vs Determinism
The notion of free will has received a lot of attention in philosophy. Before we can examine it,
however, we must understand some basic terminology. Determinism, when simply put, is the idea that
everything including thoughts, decisions, and actions are predetermined before it even happens.
Everything was determined to happen up to what kind of toast you ate for breakfast. There is no
choice, randomness, and free will does not exist. Indeterminism is the opposite of determinism. It is a
theory that one event does not necessarily cause another event to happen, and that if you were to put
the universe into rewind and play it over again, it would have a different outcome each time.
Compatibilism or soft determinism, agrees that determinism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Determinism and free will can not be associated with each other, because determinism is the belief
that everything happens for a reason and free will is the idea that you have control over actions
without influece or persuasions of any sort. If determinism is true, your past has influence over the
decisions that you make in the present and future, therefore, determinism and free will are not
compatible. Every event has a cause; every cause is also an event; human behavior is an event; thus,
all human behavior is a cause; if an event is caused, it is not free; thus, no human behavior is free, and
free will does not exist (Blatchford, 1998). This claim makes no sense since the fact that it presents
that as if everything started from an initial major event. However, this event can not be the initial and
first one, since it also claims that every event has a cause, following this logic the first event definitely
does not exist and the chain of causes and events are

How Mormon Fundamentalism And Provide A Brief History Of...
This essay will discuss Mormon fundamentalism and provide a brief history of the tenets and practices
of the religion. The term Mormon fundamentalist refers to a religious group, sect, or individual who
believes the teachings of the Mormon scriptures, and follows the teachings of early Mormon leaders.
In Western New York in 1830, Joseph Smith Jr. organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day
Saints, or LDS Church. Other early leaders of the church include Brigham Young and John Taylor,
who along with Joseph Smith Jr., are accepted by Mormon fundamentalists as prophets of God. There
are an estimated 38,000 Mormon fundamentalists living in North American territories, though the
estimate is only based on the number of people who openly distinguish themselves as such. The
majority of reported Mormon fundamentalists are located in the western states of Utah, Arizona,
Nevada, and Idaho.
One of the most significant principles of this religion is plural marriage, which Mormon
fundamentalists refer to as the Divine Principle. The founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith Jr., claims
to have received direction from God to live a polygamist lifestyle. According to Smith, a man had to
have a minimum of three wives to be able to reach the highest level of heaven. Members of the LDS
Church practiced polygamy in relatively small numbers of approximately 30 percent between 1852
and 1890. The practice of plural marriage has been a controversial topic within the Western society of

Deleting temporary file
1. Deleting temporary files. You would first have to click Start and then you have to find the system
tools.
2. You would have to locate the disk clean up tool. You would first have to choose which disk you
want to clean up.
3. Then the tool will then calculate how much space it will be able to free up.
4. When this has finished the next window will show all the files you are able to delete. Then tick the
files you want to delete and click the OK button.
Building the network cable
So to make the cable you first will need to use the cutting tools, then to take the outer rubber off the
end of the cable. Then the next step is untwisting the wires and putting them back in the correct order
the following colours are:

2. Orange
3. Green white
4. Blue
5. Blue white
6. Green
7. Brown white
8. Brown
So when the wires have been put into the correct order, you can trim the wires and then insert the
wires into the clip. You would then use the tool to clamp the wires into position so they do not fall out
of the clip.
No Screenshots to prove this but we done this in hari lesson for making a network cable.

Persian Gulf War Essay
The Persian Gulf War all started because of one country s greed for oil. Iraq accused Kuwait of
pumping oil and not sharing the benfits, and Kuwait was pumping more oil than allowed under quotas
set by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, it decreased the price of oil, Iraq s main
export. Iraq s complaints against Kuwait grew more and more harsh, but they were mostly about
money. When Iraqi forces began to assemble near the Kuwaiti border in the summer of 1990, several
Arab states tried to intervene the dispute. Kuwait didn t want to look weak so they didn t ask for any

Still other countries made other contributions: Turkey allowed air bases on its territory to be used by
coalition planes, and Japan and Germany gave financial support. The primary goal of the force was to
prevent further Iraqi action, but most countries were aware the force might eventually be used to drive
Iraq from Kuwait.
The Iraqis tried to prevent and split the growing international coalition through several means. They
made it clear that their adversaries would pay heavily if war broke out, and they hinted they would use
chemical weapons and missile attacks on cities. Iraq also held citizens of coalition countries who had
been in Kuwait at the time of the invasion and said they would be held in militarily camp areas in
effect using them as human shields to prevent coalition attacks. Iraq finally released the last of the
foreigners in December 1990 under pressure from several Arab nations. The coalition s greatest
military concern during the closing months of 1990 was that Iraqi forces would attack before coalition
forces were fully in place, but no such attack took place.
On November 29, with coalition forces over whelming in Saudi Arabia and Iraq showing no signs of
retreat, the

The Ones Who Walk Away From The By Ursula Le Guin
The topic of Ursula Le Guin s short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas is of
conscientiousness. The theme revolves around how people are often willing to excuse awful things if
it s for their own gain. The first element that led me to the theme is the tone of the story. Specifically,
the clashing of the tones between the narrator is describing the city of Omelas and when they are
describing the child and the room he/she is kept in. When describing the city, the tone is very bright
and exultant; the narrator tries their best to make this place sound like the utopia it supposedly is: With
a clamor of bells that set the swallows soaring, the Festival of Summer came to the city Omelas, bright
towered by the sea. The rigging of the boats in harbor sparkled with flags. In the streets between
houses with red roofs and painted walls, between old moss grown gardens and under avenues of trees,
past great parks and public buildings, processions moved, (Guin 1). The picture that is painted here is
one of pure bliss, almost fairy tale like cheerfulness. This is in stark contrast to the dark and dismal
way that the child and the room that they are kept in is described: The floor is dirt, a little damp to the
touch, as cellar dirt usually is. The room is about three paces long and two wide.... The people at the
door never say anything, but the child, who has not always lived in the tool room, and can remember
sunlight and its mother s voice, sometimes speaks. I will be good, it

Analysis Of Love Is Not All
The poem Love is not All by Edna St. Vincent Millay stood out to me when reading poetry in class.
The meaning of the poem Love is Not All is to remind someone that there is more to life than just
love. For example, in a class discussion on September 26, it was discussed that love does not supply
the necessities of life (Craig). This poem serves as a reminder that there are things in life that matter
more than love such as, food, shelter, and water. The poem Love is Not All stood out to me because of
my ability to relate to it and use it to help guide me through a bad break up. This poem stood out to me
because of its deeper meaning. This poem reminded me that love is not all that exists and it is not all I
have. When going through a breakup it can be very easy to say, I m never going to find love or I am
going to die alone , this poem is a reminder that you do not need love to survive. When going through
a bad break up you can lose sight of yourself and the things that are important. For example, line five
in Love is Not All states, Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath (Millay 975). This means
that love is not what is keeping you alive. This helped to remind me that even though losing the
person I thought I loved may hurt, it was not going to kill me. This poem has a strong meaning of
pushing through a hard time dealing with love. This poem shinned a bright light on the important
things in life. Love is like a bonus in life, because it is not

My Most Memorable Literary Experience
My most memorable literary experience isn t really one singular event, rather the reigniting of interest
in sitting still and reading a book. Growing up, in elementary and middle school, I loved to read. I don
t know if being an only child and an introvert fed that interest or birthed it, but it was deeply rooted.
Despite that, starting my senior year in high school and following into my early 20s that interest
waned. Or rather was upstaged by other blossoming interests in my boyfriend, working full time,
making big girl money and the independence that brought. And soon enough bars too. You can t read a
book in a bar.
Starting in the seventh grade I read the whole Scarpetta series by crime novelist Patricia Cornwell.
Kay Scarpetta was a forensic medical examiner whose boyfriend was a FBI profiler and regularly
became involved in serial murder cases. I ate that up. Maybe a bit creepy for a twelve year old to carry
around books called The Body Farm, Postmortem, Cruel Unusual, etc., but I wouldn t put them down.
Which thinking about it now, is strange because I was a scaredy cat as a kid. I never watched horror
movies. But I could read about them. The thing that really grabbed me was the medical aspect, the
descriptions of anatomy and what happened to the human body when it encountered a depraved
individual. Also, the detailed accounts of how to perform an autopsy. That s when the seed of a
healthcare career was planted. I remember telling one of my teachers I wanted to be

Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name as Mark Twain, in 1884. The story is more than
just a story however as many adults, parents, and educators believe that this book is unfit for a

this story. It allows students to understand history in context as well as understanding the vernacular of

(Leigh, Punchnels) While that is alright for a school to do that, and they have every right to do so, kids
will come into contact with words like that again and they cannot be protected forever. For example,
Huckleberry Finn has been banned in schools nationwide for using the word nigger two hundred and
nineteen times over the course of the novel. (News, CBS) Many people have backed up and valid
arguments for banning the book and they are entitled to their opinions. Some parents do not wish for
their children to be exposed to the content in the story at the age of the child when the book is
introduced. Violence and sexual themes in all forms of media have found their ways to today s youth.
In just the 32 years Banned Books week has been acknowledged, over 11,000 books have been

Summary Of Anne Frank The Diary Of A Young Girl
How would you react if your family was loathed by both the government and neighboring citizens
simply because of your religion? What if you were ordered to work at a German labor camp, and if
you didn t, there would be serious consequences? In the diary, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
by Anne Frank, Anne and her family go through the same exact situation but they choose to go into
hiding instead of fleeing the German occupied country. All of the characters, the setting, and the theme
depicted on what would come in the near future. Anne and her family also go through unexpected
daily situations that not only affect them as a whole, but stands as a place in Anne s heart. The
characters were an extraordinarily significant aspect of how the story would turn out in the end. Anne,
her family, the van Daan family, and Albert Dussel went into hiding at the Secret Annex. Anne was
particularly attached to her father, Otto, because she felt he was always there for him. ¨I model myself

Environmental Problems Associated With Organic Dyes
1. INTRODUCTION
Environmental problems related with hazardous wastes and toxic water pollutants have attracted much
attention towards itself. Organic dyes are one of the major groups of pollutants in wastewaters
released from textile and other industrial processes.
Photocatalysis is a simple and promising technique for solving various current environmental issues.
Semiconductor absorbents offer a great potential for eliminating the organic pollutants present.
Semiconductor photocatalysts for example, zinc oxide and titanium oxide have been applied to
degradation of contaminants in waste water and air.
On common example,For photocatalysis process, ZnO has also been considered as a suitable

Lincoln Movie Analysis
Slavery was a massive issue many African Americans faced during the civil war. The film Lincoln,
directed by Steven Spielberg, is a fantastic historical movie. The film focuses on the life of Abraham
Lincoln during his second Presidential term. President Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the
United States at the time. Lincoln was honored by many because he advocated for the African
American people. Lincoln wished to pass the thirteenth amendment in the House of Representatives,
which abolishes slavery. He felt as though slavery was immortally wrong. Slavery was an issue for all
Africans American. Children were sold to owners for profit no matter the age. Passing this law was a

Being that the United States is contained with Democrats and Republicans. Lincoln success to passing
the thirteenth amendment was a controversial issue for many. As discussed in class these groups were
formed to give voice to ordinary people and to disable the Government from becoming tyrannical.
Many people disagreed with the passing of this law. Many feared that the abolishing of slaves will
affect many job opportunities for themselves. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863,
which had freed most slaves as a fighter in the war but had not made slavery illegal. Lincoln faith
towards passing this issue was very extreme. Slaves where page the bare minimum for their service in
the war. However, in order for slavery to be abolished, Lincoln had to gain votes from Democratic and
Republican parties. Some politicians see peace as a necessary precursor to the passing of the
amendment, but others see the passing of the amendment as a step on the road to the end of the Civil
War. In order to gain votes for many different regions, Lincoln had to ensure individuals, pay and job
opportunities to be successful in the abolishment of slavery. Abraham Lincoln had a lot of faith and

The Role Of Refugees According To The 1951 Refugee Convention
According to the 1951 Refugee Convention, states have the obligation to accept and protect refugees
(REFERENCE). This indicated that so long individuals fit the definition of refugee status, states are
compelled to accept and protect them. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case on a global
level. According to international law, more specifically the 1951 Refugee Convention, refugees are to
be taken in and are to be provided housing, education, and other services in their host country
(REFERENCE). Beyond the acceptance of refugees, states should also be invested in the integration
of refugees into the host society. In recent history, the humanitarian disasters that have happened in
across the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia have caused the total upheaval of many lives from
living under the protection of the roofs of their homes to leaving many displaced.
A refugee is defined as someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country origin, owing to
a well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a
particular social group, or political opinion (1951 Refugee Convention, 3). The Universal Declaration
of Human Rights 1948 recognizes the right of persons to seek asylum from persecution in other
countries. The United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees adopted in 1951 is the
centerpiece of international refugee protection today (1951 Refugee Convention, 2). The amount of

What Is Andrew Carnegie Unethical
Andrew Carnegie was a man who believed in the phrase Survival of the fittest. He became a shining
example of this quote by climbing the ladder from a lowly Irish immigrant to one of the richest men in
history. Through aggressive and sometimes unethical means, Carnegie was able to establish firm
dominance over the steel industry in the late 19th century and through the early 20th century. The
manner in which Carnegie treated his workers, the government, and his competition ensured that he
would forever be remembered as a industrial legend. From underpaying his employees to buying out
his competitors, Carnegie continued to make the maximum amount of profit in mind (Valentine,
Baker). Being a man coming into America with nothing and climbing up to become one of the richest
men in the world, he would eventually become the poster boy for every Rag to Riches story. Before he
became the multi million dollar tyrant we all know him as, his first job was a in a factory working as a
bobbin boy. He received a measly dollar and twenty cents a week (Carnegie 34). It can be implied that
this is why Carnegie was a firm believer in social darwinism and the concept of free enterprise,
Carnegie believed that opportunity was there for anyone willing to seize it. He expressed these beliefs
and demonstrated that they worked using his cutthroat business tactics and other unethical acts he
committed to ensure dominance in the steel industry. Even in times of unrest and an almost stagnant

I felt as though it was just a completely different setup, the mahogany wood did not fit well with the
plain white stonewalls of the rest of the exhibits. It was also set up as if it was a house with couches
and tables but they were not for sitting on and so it just takes up space. It can be distracting from
actual paintings displayed there. However, other then the distractions the mahogany wood was
beautiful. It almost transported the viewers into a different time period. It was a weird choice when
compared to the rest of the museum, but if you were to examine just those two rooms by their selves
then you can appreciate the effort took in designing the setup. The last thing that has not been
addressed with the critique is the setup of the gift shop, however, I personally did not get the
opportunity to look into the gift shop so I can not comment on its setup, but if the gift shop is anything
like the rest of the museum then I am sure that it is a nice store with great products for sale. In

Prey Summary By Michael Crichton
Prey summary The book Prey , is a novel written by Michael Crichton. This novel explains the
wonders and potential hazards of nanotechnology. The plague had formed from a cloud of
nanoparticles or microrobots, that had escaped from a laboratory. This started off as a so called
harmless cloud that is self sustaining and self reproducing, which means it can be extremely powerful.
This cloud is intelligent and will evolve from things and become more and more deadly with every
passing hour. It has become so powerful that every attempt after attempt has failed when trying to
destroy this plague. This cloud has even now turned itself into large swarms that will get the prey it
feeds off of to get bigger and less destructible. As this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Observation Of Solar Eclipses
Solar eclipses provide a unique opportunity to observe the sun itself owing to the moon providing a
clear view of the solar chromosphere. Observations of the sun during a solar eclipse lead to a variety
of discoveries ranging from the discovery of elements to a deeper understanding of solar activities
such as coronal mass ejections. The use of equipment in new ways allows scientists to make
previously unimaginable discoveries as Pierre Jansen discovered in 1868 while observing the sun.
With the knowledge of atomic emission spectroscopy and new instruments Pierre Jansen observed the
spectrum of the chromosphere that was briefly visible at the beginning and at the end of totality and
saw a bright yellow emission line (Pasachoff, 2009). After further observation without an eclipse he
and Norman Lockyer independently confirmed that this line indicated the presence of a new element
named helium. Observations of this nature can produce false positives as was the case for coronium.
From solar observation green, red, and several fainter emission lines (Pasachoff, 2009) were observed
and attributed to an element named coronium. The existence of such an element was later disproved
when it was discovered that these lines came from highly ionized states of iron, calcium and nickel (an
astro...). Solar observation during an eclipse can also give insight to solar phenomena such as coronal
mass ejections, also known as CMEs. CEMs are billion ton clouds of magnetized plasma ejected from

Worlds Of Wonder In The Northern Colonies Summary
In David D. Hall s essay Worlds of Wonder in the Northern Colonies and T.H. Breen s Worlds of
Goods in the Northern Colonies; the argument of the settler s views or main objective on the land is
put to question. David D. Hall supports the idea that religion was deeply rooted in the early settlers
while T.H. Breen supports the idea that the early Americans only concern was becoming an empire of
goods. While the two hold factual evidence to this argument, David D. Hall proves to be the most
reliable due to its religious reliability of tradition.
Worlds of Wonder in the Northern Colonies depicts the deeply rooted religious views within the early
settlers by quickly relating it to the Deuteronomic Formula. A Deuteronomic Formula is the idea ...

Sexism In America Today
The article I read was You re Sexist. And So Am I from USA Today. This article went into discussing
how everyone has internalized sexism, believing in sexism in their head, whether they like to believe
it or not. This is because society teaches people norms that women must follow in order for them to be
respected. As we have discussed in class, this is the idea of subjectivity because all of these social
codes are predetermined and that makes them very difficult to change. One example of this was in the
article when it talked about how women often chose their careers around them someday becoming
mothers. Women are expected to have children and then take time off from work to raise their
children. No one believes that men should be expected to stay at home and raise children because it is
not the societal norm. Therefore when a woman chooses a career around impending motherhood, she
is falling into subjectivity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An important aspect of this is how many women are being sexually objectified. The article said that
this is one way women internalized sexism because they believe if they do not wear promiscuous
clothing that they are safe from sexual predators. However, no women would flat out say another
woman was assaulted due to her clothing, they are often thinking about their own clothing choices if
they were in that situation. Furthermore, the article does talk about how women have made strides
towards gender equality, but there is still sexism. Another aspect of SCWAMP discussed in the article
was property holding. The property, in this case, would be knowledge on how to be a girl. This
knowledge would be on things such as shaving your legs, makeup, and trendsetting clothes. Since
society believes that you are not a perfect women unless you follow the norms set out for

The Syrian Conflict Of Syria
The Syrian Conflict The conflict in Syria began in March 2011 in Deraa after multiple teenagers who
painted revolution slogans on a school wall were apprehended and later tortured by the Syrian
government. Pro democracy protests broke out and security forces began shooting at protestors and
multiple were killed, which truly sparked the beginning of the conflict. More protests went on
throughout the nation calling for President Assad to step down and after he did not, by July 2011, there
were hundreds of protestors taking the streets across the country demanding he resign. As more time
passed and no change was made, the country eventually broke into a civil war as rebels were battling
the government forces for control of land. The fighting expanded through out the country, reaching the
capital Damascus as well as the important city of Aleppo. By August of 2015, over 250,000 were
killed and that number has only increased by now. The United States and Russia are both involved in
this issue, as the U.S is backing the rebel forces to try to remove Assad from power, but Russia is
backing Assad and providing aid to his campaign. Not only is it a battle between rebel forces as well
as government forces, but also new dimensions such ISIS, a rising jihadist group, added a new

exercise promote learning. Curate the research and prepare documents and digital presentations.
Deliver presentations at local school board meetings, in meetings with elected officials in the state,
and with public servants in the Department of Education. Using research will show policy makers the
importance of health in promoting the educational goals established in federal mandates such as No
Child Left Behind.
Action 2: Publish articles in peer reviewed journals, but also magazines, newspapers, and Websites,
highlighting the importance of health in education. The articles target their respective audiences in
order to garner the attention of educators, parents, and policy makers alike. Peer reviewed journal
articles will substantiate claims that personal and public health promotes the educational goals
established by the school and federal mandate. Articles in magazines and newspapers target parents
and older students, demonstrating how they can take greater responsibility for their health by eating
right and exercising.
Action 3: Hold town meetings and public speaking events for community involvement, showing the
link between public health in general, and student performance in particular. If possible, hire high
profile or celebrity speakers to give talks that will attract students and parents.

NextGen is a tremendous, historic shift to revamp the U.S. air transportation system. This all
embracing initiative integrates new and existing policies, procedures, and technologies, including
satellite navigation and advanced digital communications. Two major parts of this upgrade and
modernization include, but not limited to, Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System
(STARS) and En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM). These systems enable NextGen
capabilities in all phases of flight and safety. STARS for instance, replaces multiple automation
systems for controllers who provide control services to pilots in terminal airspace and the airspace
immediately surrounding major airports. Additionally, ERAM combines flight plan information with
surveillance data from Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS B), Wide Area Multi
lateration, and radar to automate many air traffic control functions. Other parts of ERAM include,
System Wide Information Management (SWIM), which provides the digital data sharing backbone of
NextGen. SWIM also connects producers and users of data with a common language and single point
of contact to access aeronautical, flight, and weather information. ADS B sends out broadcasts of an
aircraft s position, altitude, and velocity to a network of ground stations that relays the information to
air traffic control displays and nearby aircraft that are equipped to receive the data. Each component

Adjusted net income was $531 million, representing an increase of 56.2 per cent year over year. The
purpose of this paper is to examine how Air Canada in 2011 successfully aligned their business
strategy and Information Technology (IT) by managing information resources on several levels to
accomplish a competitive advantage over other airline carriers and gain the attention of their

IT alignment to meet Air Canada s goals for the future and continued success.
A significant step towards Air Canada s success was implementing a multiple vendor sourcing strategy
for IT. Utilizing their long time trusted partner, IBM, who was familiar with their industry needs and
company IT standards became the key liaison for expanding additional technologies needed by other
outside vendors. This newly expanded relationship between IBM and Air Canada allowed for the
airliner to concentrate on what they do best which is fly airplanes and IBM to become an invested

Not only do Dean s motivations and passions seem to appeal to Sal, Dean shows off a sense of being
young and a natural man . While it seems like nearly everyone else in the novel considers Dean to be
irresponsible, Sal assumes that Dean s erratic behavior proves that he is on a whole different level of
living. In the beginning of the novel, we learn that Dean was involved in sketchy ordeals. He was
arrested for stealing cars in Denver. Instead of looking down on Dean for his actions, Sal instead
believes his actions are just an attempt at searching for pure joy or raw happiness. While I viewed
Dean s behavior otherwise from a negative perspective, Kerouac merely suggests that Dean s actions
are only the result of his quest for happiness. In addition to this, Dean s behavior is portrayed
sympathetically and is not responsible for what the world may see as irresponsible. Seeking out such
behavior is the only way that Sal and Dean see it, to finding the true meaning of life, also known as, It
.
As Sal analyzes Dean as prominently a hero, we as the audience, notice that Dean is incredibly
flawed. He often tends to abandon those who love him and feel absolutely no remorse whatsoever at
his poor judgement. His untimely actions prove that he is nowhere close to a hero. In my opinion, a
main part of the reason for why we seem to hate Dean is because we feel sorry for him. His
obliviousness of being a mess, makes him even more

Airbags Research Paper
If you are looking for a Houston car crash lawyer, there is an excellent chance that you recently had a
close encounter with an airbag. Airbags are designed to prevent injuries in the event of a collision.
Depending on the vehicle, the airbag may be released from the dashboard, the steering wheel or the
doors of the vehicle. Although these devices are exceptionally simple in design, they still feature some
innovative pieces of technology. In order to be effective, the airbag must open faster than a car can
crash. While you may be hitting another vehicle at 60 mph, your airbag is moving at a speed of 200
mph to keep up.
To test an airbag, car companies employ crash test dummies. Obviously, real people would be too

Like everything else on earth, airbags and car accidents are subject to the laws of physics. Basically,
something that is heavier or faster will have more kinetic energy. If you crash into something, this
means that a heavier car or faster speed will be throwing more force into the crash. Modern cars are
made to crumple on impact and take some of this force, but vehicle design is not always enough.
While your car structure is crumpling to take on the force of the crash, the people and items in the
vehicle still have kinetic energy as well. This means that your car will lose energy and stop moving,
but your body will still be flying through space. Seatbelts will stop your body from moving, but your
head will keep moving forward. In severe accidents, this can cause your head to slam into the
windshield or steering wheel. To prevent this from happening, airbags are used to slow down the
momentum of your head. As your head hits the airbag, the nylon bag deflates so that your head does
not end up bouncing back into the seat. If you were recently in a car accident and this did not occur,
you should contact a Houston auto wreck attorney to talk about your

Yan et al (2008) Ebeling (1997), pointed out the purpose of maintenance is to extend equipment life
and minimise the frequency of service interruption. Ebeling (1997) concluded that availability is the
important index of the all indices for power availability. Several maintenance types or tactics have
been suggested by many authors for example (Mowbray, 1991 and Kelly, 1997). There are mainly two
types of maintenance practices and these are breakdown and preventive maintenance. Breakdown
maintenance requires replacement of damaged part of the equipment during unscheduled maintenance
while preventive maintenance requires replacement of the components at pre determined intervals.
Condition based maintenance is used to monitor the condition of the equipment using condition
monitoring technique.
There is a general belief that corrective maintenance is less economical than preventive maintenance,
and all failures can then be prevented. This approach to preventive maintenance firstly wastes a lot of
resources in doing unnecessary tasks which will not improve equipment or system availability and
secondly it is potentially risk (Tsang,1995).Principal argument in favour of detailed and integrated

headlights (line 41) refers to the six lights on a police car and police brutality on men of color. The
countdown ends at Five O which is slang for police and a metaphor of death. Five O is simply a
symbol of the short lived lives of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement. The countdown
is a diction, suggesting the idea that African Americans are killed in the early stages of their lives,

Violence In Frantz Fanon s The Wretched Of The Earth
Frantz Fanon, in his book The Wretched of the Earth, seeks to define violence and its justification in
the context of colonialism. To understand Fanon s justification for violence, it is necessary to learn
how Fanon defines violence. Fanon s definitions of violence range from psychological to historical to
cultural, eventually leading the colonized to redirect this violence to the colonizer as a cleansing ritual.
In The Wretched of the Earth, The first type of violence that Fanon addresses is physical and bodily
harm. Fanon says that, Their first confrontation was colored by violence and their cohabitation or
rather the exploitation of the colonized by the colonizer continued at the point of the bayonet and
under cannon fire (Fannon 2). Immediately, the colonizer begins to imprison the indigenous people for
the colonist s benefit. He then defines ontological and epistemological violence. Ontological and
epistemological violence happens as the colonizer begins to steal the identity of the people they
control. This violence creates the bounds between the colonizer and the colonized. It traps the
indigenous people with slave identities, marking them as natives. Once this violence occurs,
colonizers begin to forget the greater reality of their actions. It becomes a Manichean paradigm. There
is no longer a gray area, just black and white, good and evil. Fanon even goes so far as writing that
Sometimes this Manichaeism reaches its logical conclusion and dehumanizes the

I Want To Stay On The Home Front Dbq Essay
During WWI everyone was affected, whether it was the soldier in the battle field coming home with
shell shock, or the children left without a father for a few crucial years, or even a lifetime, or the
wives, mothers and grandmothers left at home to either pick up the financial burden or to continue on
in the best way they knew how without their loved ones. Overall if a person s country was at war then
they were affected and had to make sacrifices of food, gas, and other supplies necessary to fuel the
war effort. Europeans were affected on the home front when women had to go to work, when they
gained a greater sense of nationalism, and also when they had to ration food, and produce as much as
possible. When labor shortages got to the point where women were brought in in order to fill the void,
it signalled a turning point in history. It opened the door for women to stay in the work force even
after the war had ended. The need for workers was severe, to the point where 792,000 women were
added to the industrial workforce in Britain between 1914 and 1918. (Document 1) This is a huge ...

Most of the time when war was declared common people felt the burden most of all, having to ration

Imagine Dragons Album Cover Essay
Two hands are bound in a golden tape, in the middle of the cover. All the surrounding is very dark so
they are the principal subject of the album cover. The only light present in this image comes in front of
the hands, and it makes all the particular detailed. All the anatomical details are very visible and they
make the hands realistic. At the height of the wrists there are many spider webs that link the hands to
the two bottom corners of the album cover.
Right above the palms of the hands there is a bird that flies up to the top of the cover, it s plausible that
it was freed by the hands after a long time. In the middle of the cover there is the band s name,
Imagine Dragons, and the album s name, Smoke + Mirrors. The text is white and it ... Show more

The title Smoke + Mirrors is a clear reference to the way of saying It is just smoke and mirrors . This
metaphor is based on magicians illusions. They make the audience think that objects magically appear
and disappear by extending or retracting mirrors amid a distracting burst of smoke. It can also be
referred to the computer programming language, where it is used to describe a program that does not
yet exist, but appears as though it does. That is why the title Smoke + Mirrors has a fundamental role

A Day At The Trenches Narrative Report
I was more than grateful to discover a parcel of crackers and supplies arrive in my name. I thank you
for your remarkable support towards me over the course of this seemingly endless war. After spending
a year and a half under constant hell fire in a strange and distant place, I am more than eager to come
home to you.
When I initially enlisted in the Royal Army, I felt it was my duty to defend our glorious Empire
against the malevolent hands of the vicious Jerries. I expected to gloriously march into Europe; but
with every incident bringing me closer and closer to death, I feel as if I signed myself up for a suicide
mission. The day I boarded the RMS Alaunia is still clear in my memory. Thousands of men like me
were crammed into the vessel, anticipating the imminent adventure and the chance to travel abroad.
Everyone was certain that this war would soon be over and that we would all peacefully return as a
decorated war hero. After doing a mock attack at the park, I was ... Show more content on

For about a week, there was no significant action on my part. We went through the daily ritual of stand
to, followed by an order to stand down when it was clear the Germans wouldn t attack. The conditions
of the trenches are sub par, with the constant infestation of rodents. For breakfast, we are given a slice
of hard bread with a cup of tea to wash it down. I often spend the rest of my day standing on the fire
steps waiting for something to happen; But of course, little happened. Sometimes, men would be
asked to go on a trench raid. If the attack was successful, the soldiers would receive a two week home
leave along with some other supplies. I went on a couple of these missions, and I saw many of my
friends get caught on barbed wire to picked away by machine gun. The wounds were large enough to
blow off heads and limbs in some cases, truly

Based on the case study concerning the ABC Travels services, I believe they are very far behind when

The s The House Is Black
Forugh Farrokhzad s The House is Black is a harrowing, disturbing, artfully made documentary, one
of the few films directed by the Iranian poet Farrokhzad. Her subject here is leprosy, and she looks
directly, uncompromisingly, at the devastation that this disease causes the human body. She does not
look away, not from the cruelest deformations this disease generates. Her purpose was to expose the
punishing and superfluous way that lepers continued to be treated in Iran, funneled into quarantined
leper colonies where their disease went relatively untreated, causing them to slowly and painfully
degenerate. Farrokhzad s film was deliberate in raising cognizance about these conditions, and to
emphasize that this situation need not be. Produced during the reign of statist documentary cinema,
Farrokhzad s work was a wild contrast from the other documentary films created in this timeframe.
Farrokhzad s The House is Black deliberately and openly disobeyed the official style of Iranian
documentaries during the 1960s, paving the way for Iranian New Wave cinema. From striking mirror
scenes to deep pans of a classroom, Farrokhzad s auteurist interventions are more obvious than subtle
although Farrokhzad s directorial hand is heavy in The House is Black, this documentary was among
the first to reflect a powerful yet unnoticed reality against the wishes of the Iranian government.
A male narrator impassively lists facts about leprosy while Farrokhzad cuts swiftly and abruptly

The Narrative Of Olaudah Equiano
The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, is a personal autobiography of himself,
Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, documenting the hardships of slavery throughout his lifetime.
Equiano writes one of the best primary sources from a slave s perspective and master s perspective
during slavery. Equiano does not hold back on the horrors of what traveling as a slave from West
Indies to North America was really like. Olaudah Equiano shares his heart wrenching journey through
the brutality of slavery experienced at such young age to him mastering economics and being able to
free himself from slavery. Freedom and salvation are reoccurring parallel themes throughout this
autobiography. Although Equiano s story has been questioned ... Show more content on

Just when the reader had thought it couldn t get worse for the troubled boy, he aches, we were soon
deprived of even the small comfort of weeping together. Even after he shares with us that he has been
thrown in a sack and basically deprived of his basic human rights, this was a new rock bottom for
Equiano. No love, no shelter, no family. It s the horrible details Equiano writes about that gives the
reader mental images of him being torn from his family and village and sold into slavery with his
sister in North America and West Indies. It isn t until later on where Equiano and his sister reconnect.
Equiano weeps of deep emotion as he and his sister reunite, and persuades the reader how terrible the
masters were for tearing them apart. When these people knew we were brother and sister they
indulged us together; and the man, to whom I supposed we belonged, lay with us, he in the middle,
while she and I held one another by the hands across his breast all night; and thus for a while we
forgot our misfortunes in the joy of being together: but even this small comfort was soon to have an
end; for scarcely had the fatal morning appeared, when she was again torn from me for ever! The
context of this piece and descriptive, heart wrenching words Equiano uses appeals to the pathos side
of his story. This emotional plea helps the reader grasp what it must have felt like to be reunited and
torn, yet again from a beloved. It is the same

  • 2. REL 113 Common Practices in Religion Common Practices in Religion Calvin Young REL 133 March 31, 2015 Mr. William Sunday Common Practices in Religion Although religions today take on many shapes and forms, and may seem so dramatically different from each other, in order to study and understand these religions, their similarities must be identified. This paper will first present a definition of religion that will connect to all religions at the simplest base. Then this paper will examine the common practices and experiences that are present in both the primary religions of the world, as well as the indigenous religions. Finally, this paper will discuss the issues that are critical to the academic study of religions. Definition of Religion The most common failing in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Michael Malloy identifies several of these critical issues in his book Experiencing the World s Religions (2013). The first of these questions is whether the religion can truly be observed or is the act of study changing the events observe, thus invalidating the research. If the religion cannot be seen without altering the ceremony and culture, then study will only provide information on what the observer can change, rather than what the religion is. Secondly, can the major religions be classified into such groups, can all the Buddhist sects be labeled as Buddhist, or must the religions be taken individually, and who makes the decision of what to label the religion. Lastly, the issue of experiences of the religion by different interior groups. A researcher must ask what the various experiences of the religions are between men and women, or the experiences of a child, adolescent, adult, and elder. Also, a researcher must ask how the ceremonies are different for the converted if the religion allows for converts. Conclusion This paper has presented a definition of religion, as well as an examination of its parts to determine if the definition is adequate to apply appropriately. Secondly, this paper has examined several practices and experiences common to both major religions of the worlds, as well as indigenous religions. Lastly, the key critical issues of the study of religions and reasons for their consideration have been identified and discussed. Reference Molloy, M. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Conflicts That Arise from Particular Ways of Seeing the... TRIAL ESSAY Conflicts that arise from particular ways of seeing the world are made evident through the shaping of texts. In Barry Levinson s film Wag the Dog and Michael Moore s documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 , it is clear that the perspectives in which the audience views the world create particular conflicts. In both texts, the conflicting perspectives arise from the way the naïve public views the world and the way that the government and media view the world through their particular agendas. In Wag the Dog , the plot relies on the alleged sexual impropriety of the president and the way in which particular political powers and the media intervene. In the film it is clear that the audience is seeing two perspectives, that of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The audience is extremely aware of this through the use of the Albanian girl scene where through filming and editing, the American people are manipulated into believing a lie. Levinson uses dramatic irony here to emphasise this point to the viewers, who know what the public in the film do not. Brean s assertion of we are giving them what they want is indicative of a public who remember the slogans but don t remember the wars . As Brean satirises the perspective of the outsider s the view in which the American people see the world is seen, especially through the use of the Albanian girl where the audience literally sees what the audience in the film sees and believes. As Brean uses repetition in referring to the Gulf War of 91, the audience witnesses the verisimilitude that the public so easily succumbs to. Though, his character is portrayed in a different light at the end of the film through the death of Stanley Motts. In this scene his character shifts to that of a menacing, powerful figure. Even though the audience is aware of his significance and power throughout the entire film, the fact that he is the one that orders for Motts to be killed further extrapolates on the idea that the public is naïve to image, as even the audience watching the film believes that the character of Brean would not commit such an act. • 4. Euthanasia Should Be Allowed To Die Research Paper To have the right to be assisted to die or to not have the right to be assisted to die, that is the question. An individual can have their lives turn upside down with merely a sentence being told to them. With the countless procedures performed, we are lament to say, there is no cure. Just with fourteen words being said, all hope is lost. What is the point of living on if all that is being felt is pure utter pain? These individuals that have already been told they have a terminal illness should be given their rights to end their lives. Being exempt from pure excruciating and unbearable pain is immoral; having said that, doctors should allow their patients to commit assisted suicide. Differentiating between euthanasia and assisted suicide is essential when discussing the right to die. When a third party has performed the last act in the patient s death, euthanasia has occurred. When a lethal injection is presented to the patient and the patient decides to insert it into their veins, assisted suicide has been partaken. The patient should have a right to decide whether or not they would like to continue living or perish. The doctor should not be the one in control when advocating the decision their patient would like to commit. Euthanasia makes the doctor the primary source to what should happen with their patient. Assisted suicide should be promoted instead of Euthanasia due to the fact that the patient overall decides their final fate. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. How Memories From The Brain Is Capable Of Retrieving... Every time I learn the name of a student, I forget the name of a fish was once said by David Jordan, the president of Stanford University (Anderson, Bjork Bjork, 2000). This statement is interesting because it brings up the idea of the amount of information one can consume and maintain available at any given time; this information is put into memory. Memory is the process of maintaining, recovering, and applying information about episodes and events, when the original material is not current (Goldstein, 2008, p. 136). This definition mean even if we have not just experience that memory, our brain can go back in time and retrieve what has happened hours, days or years ago. Retrieving memories from the brain is the process of relocating material from Long Term Memory (LTM) back into working memory, where it becomes available through consciousness (Goldstein, 2008, p. 197). Our brain is capable of retrieving information because it has been encoded. Encoding is the process of obtaining information then converting it into memories, in which goes onto our LTM (Goldstein, 2008, p. 196). The main claim of this essay is that is that if a memory is encoded correctly, then that is all that is needed for memory failure or success and the process of retrieving memories also relies on the encoding of the memory. Meanwhile, this claim that encoding is all that is needed for memory failure or success was researched by Craik and Lockhart (1972, as described by Goldstein, 2008, p. ... Microeconomics Essay Microeconomics Essay The price of electricity has increased substantially in the last three years, as a result of that; there have been apparent changes in the demand for electricity for the consumers and it has affected the producers supply market. In the following essay, we are going to look at the effect of the increase in the price of electricity in South Africa, using the supply and demand framework. The reason for the increase of the price of electricity is to balance out the supply and demand of electricity. The National Energy Regulators of South Africa (NERSA) has approved a 25% increase of the price of electricity for 3years starting from 2010 (Roodt, 2012). Supply and demand are fundamental principles of economics, it is what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The increase in the price of electricity is equivalent to an increase in the cost of production. The law of supply states that an increase in the cost of production will cause a decrease in the supply, provided everything else stays constant (Parkin, 2010).We can clearly see this in diagram C, when the price increased from P1 to P2, the supply curve shifts from S1 to S2, therefore decreasing the quantity supplied from Q1 to Q2. The equilibrium also shifts from E1 to E2. As time passes the mining industry will have enough time to adjust to the increase in the price of the electricity, which increased the cost of production. The supply curve of the mining industry will become more inelastic, this is because in the long run, the suppliers will find other more sufficient methods to produce gold with less energy. So when the price does increase again, the change in the quantity demanded will be affect much less. This is shown in Diagram C, when the S2 becomes S3, we can see that the supply curve is becoming more vertical, indicating that the supply curve is more inelastic. And in the long run, the only thing that changes is the elasticity of the supply curve, the quantity supplied and the equilibrium remains the same. 3 We can conclude the essay by stating that as the price increases for electricity, the demand for the electricity by the households will decrease ... • 7. Importance Of Water Conservation Essay Water, the source of life, is essential in supporting both our daily and business activities. In our daily activities, we need water to make food, to shower, to wash clothes, and to drink to maintain our body energy, etc. In business activities, we need water to operate restaurant, hotel facilities like spas and hot tubs, and to generate power, etc. Based on how much we rely on water, there needs no further emphasis on the importance of water in our lives. Yet, water, this finite resource, is getting more and more scarce due to either excessive use of water or poor awareness of water conservation. And as human develops and industrialization process speeds up, our demand for water has become greater and greater. If we do not pay attention to water conservation, the situation will get worse, which will lead to drought and affect the nature at the worse. Therefore, it is our responsibility to conserve water in our daily life, and more importantly in our business operations. According to a report conducted by United States Environmental Protection Agency, hotels and restaurants water usage account for fifteen percent of the total water use in commercial and institutional facilities in the United States (Saving Water), so there are many opportunities to conserve water in these two sectors, and we are going to discuss what can be done and how exactly do some restaurants and hotels do to conserve water. For us here in San Diego, California, in the Western Hemisphere, on the west coast, United States, North America, that impact is felt mostly with rising sea temperatures and rising sea levels. There are noticeable predictions that by 2050, rising sea levels here will rise as stated: At least a 16 inch sea level rise is expected in San Diego, Ca by 2050, with a projected rise of 50% by the turn of the century. San Diego, Ca has several beaches locally therefore this is a concern here. There are multiple beachfront properties and businesses that would be impacted by loss of profit margins, and potentially flooding if this was to occur. The property losses would potentially be in the millions and this does not take into consideration the impact that sea mammals would feel. By 2100, the projected sea level rise (SLR) would be 5 meters above normal...and some widely projected margins estimate those 7 23 inches possible for SLR in the coming years. The Fourth Assessment (4AR) by the IPCC of 2001 gives these projections for the 21st. century. Certainly not current by any means however these projections are for this current century. Vertical boundaries are the process where the company produces its own raw material and ends it by distributing and selling of those finish goods which are obtained from the raw material. The horizontal integrations actually works by acquiring or by creating the production units for the product output in the market to increase their market share by increasing the economic share and economies scale in the market. By having the horizontal integration the firm can show their presence and strength in the market even by distributing and routing their goods and services. For example, GE firm has variety of products and services like Universal pictures, universal parks, medical systems (William Boyes, 2012). etc., where it has more market economic share and economies of scope. • 10. Free-Will Vs Determinism The notion of free will has received a lot of attention in philosophy. Before we can examine it, however, we must understand some basic terminology. Determinism, when simply put, is the idea that everything including thoughts, decisions, and actions are predetermined before it even happens. Everything was determined to happen up to what kind of toast you ate for breakfast. There is no choice, randomness, and free will does not exist. Indeterminism is the opposite of determinism. It is a theory that one event does not necessarily cause another event to happen, and that if you were to put the universe into rewind and play it over again, it would have a different outcome each time. Compatibilism or soft determinism, agrees that determinism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Determinism and free will can not be associated with each other, because determinism is the belief that everything happens for a reason and free will is the idea that you have control over actions without influece or persuasions of any sort. If determinism is true, your past has influence over the decisions that you make in the present and future, therefore, determinism and free will are not compatible. Every event has a cause; every cause is also an event; human behavior is an event; thus, all human behavior is a cause; if an event is caused, it is not free; thus, no human behavior is free, and free will does not exist (Blatchford, 1998). This claim makes no sense since the fact that it presents that as if everything started from an initial major event. However, this event can not be the initial and first one, since it also claims that every event has a cause, following this logic the first event definitely does not exist and the chain of causes and events are ... • 11. How Mormon Fundamentalism And Provide A Brief History Of... This essay will discuss Mormon fundamentalism and provide a brief history of the tenets and practices of the religion. The term Mormon fundamentalist refers to a religious group, sect, or individual who believes the teachings of the Mormon scriptures, and follows the teachings of early Mormon leaders. In Western New York in 1830, Joseph Smith Jr. organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, or LDS Church. Other early leaders of the church include Brigham Young and John Taylor, who along with Joseph Smith Jr., are accepted by Mormon fundamentalists as prophets of God. There are an estimated 38,000 Mormon fundamentalists living in North American territories, though the estimate is only based on the number of people who openly distinguish themselves as such. The majority of reported Mormon fundamentalists are located in the western states of Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho. One of the most significant principles of this religion is plural marriage, which Mormon fundamentalists refer to as the Divine Principle. The founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith Jr., claims to have received direction from God to live a polygamist lifestyle. According to Smith, a man had to have a minimum of three wives to be able to reach the highest level of heaven. Members of the LDS Church practiced polygamy in relatively small numbers of approximately 30 percent between 1852 and 1890. • 14. The Ones Who Walk Away From The By Ursula Le Guin The topic of Ursula Le Guin s short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas is of conscientiousness. The theme revolves around how people are often willing to excuse awful things if it s for their own gain. The first element that led me to the theme is the tone of the story. Specifically, the clashing of the tones between the narrator is describing the city of Omelas and when they are describing the child and the room he/she is kept in. When describing the city, the tone is very bright and exultant; the narrator tries their best to make this place sound like the utopia it supposedly is: With a clamor of bells that set the swallows soaring, the Festival of Summer came to the city Omelas, bright towered by the sea. The rigging of the boats in harbor sparkled with flags. In the streets between houses with red roofs and painted walls, between old moss grown gardens and under avenues of trees, past great parks and public buildings, processions moved, (Guin 1). The picture that is painted here is one of pure bliss, almost fairy tale like cheerfulness. This is in stark contrast to the dark and dismal way that the child and the room that they are kept in is described: The floor is dirt, a little damp to the touch, as cellar dirt usually is. The room is about three paces long and two wide.... The people at the door never say anything, but the child, who has not always lived in the tool room, and can remember sunlight and its mother s voice, sometimes speaks. I will be good, it ... • 15. Analysis Of Love Is Not All The poem Love is not All by Edna St. Vincent Millay stood out to me when reading poetry in class. The meaning of the poem Love is Not All is to remind someone that there is more to life than just love. For example, in a class discussion on September 26, it was discussed that love does not supply the necessities of life (Craig). This poem serves as a reminder that there are things in life that matter more than love such as, food, shelter, and water. The poem Love is Not All stood out to me because of my ability to relate to it and use it to help guide me through a bad break up. This poem stood out to me because of its deeper meaning. This poem reminded me that love is not all that exists and it is not all I have. When going through a breakup it can be very easy to say, I m never going to find love or I am going to die alone , this poem is a reminder that you do not need love to survive. When going through a bad break up you can lose sight of yourself and the things that are important. For example, line five in Love is Not All states, Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath (Millay 975). This means that love is not what is keeping you alive. This helped to remind me that even though losing the person I thought I loved may hurt, it was not going to kill me. This poem has a strong meaning of pushing through a hard time dealing with love. Growing up, in elementary and middle school, I loved to read. I don t know if being an only child and an introvert fed that interest or birthed it, but it was deeply rooted. Despite that, starting my senior year in high school and following into my early 20s that interest waned. Or rather was upstaged by other blossoming interests in my boyfriend, working full time, making big girl money and the independence that brought. And soon enough bars too. You can t read a book in a bar. Starting in the seventh grade I read the whole Scarpetta series by crime novelist Patricia Cornwell. Kay Scarpetta was a forensic medical examiner whose boyfriend was a FBI profiler and regularly became involved in serial murder cases. I ate that up. Maybe a bit creepy for a twelve year old to carry around books called The Body Farm, Postmortem, Cruel Unusual, etc., but I wouldn t put them down. Which thinking about it now, is strange because I was a scaredy cat as a kid. I never watched horror movies. But I could read about them. The thing that really grabbed me was the medical aspect, the descriptions of anatomy and what happened to the human body when it encountered a depraved individual. In the diary, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, Anne and her family go through the same exact situation but they choose to go into hiding instead of fleeing the German occupied country. All of the characters, the setting, and the theme depicted on what would come in the near future. Anne and her family also go through unexpected daily situations that not only affect them as a whole, but stands as a place in Anne s heart. The characters were an extraordinarily significant aspect of how the story would turn out in the end. Anne, her family, the van Daan family, and Albert Dussel went into hiding at the Secret Annex. Anne was particularly attached to her father, Otto, because she felt he was always there for him. ¨I model myself after Father, and there s no one in the world I love more. • 20. Environmental Problems Associated With Organic Dyes 1. INTRODUCTION Environmental problems related with hazardous wastes and toxic water pollutants have attracted much attention towards itself. Organic dyes are one of the major groups of pollutants in wastewaters released from textile and other industrial processes. Photocatalysis is a simple and promising technique for solving various current environmental issues. Semiconductor absorbents offer a great potential for eliminating the organic pollutants present. Semiconductor photocatalysts for example, zinc oxide and titanium oxide have been applied to degradation of contaminants in waste water and air. On common example,For photocatalysis process, ZnO has also been considered as a suitable alternative for TiO2 due to The band gap energy of ZnO is similar to TiO2, the most used photocatalytic material, so it hypothetically has the same photocatalytic ability as TiO2 and it exhibits better performance in the degradation of organic dye molecules in acidic as well as basic media. The doping of Cu in ZnO is expected to modify absorption, and other physical or chemical properties of ZnO also. Lately,( Co doping) doping of two types of atoms into semiconductor materials has attracted interest, as it result in a higher photocatalytic activity and special characteristics compared with that of single element doping into semiconductor oxides . Here, a simple Physical method is developed for the synthesis of Cu doped ZnO nanorods, and their photocatalytic activities with different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This indicated that so long individuals fit the definition of refugee status, states are compelled to accept and protect them. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case on a global level. According to international law, more specifically the 1951 Refugee Convention, refugees are to be taken in and are to be provided housing, education, and other services in their host country (REFERENCE). Beyond the acceptance of refugees, states should also be invested in the integration of refugees into the host society. In recent history, the humanitarian disasters that have happened in across the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia have caused the total upheaval of many lives from living under the protection of the roofs of their homes to leaving many displaced. A refugee is defined as someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country origin, owing to a well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion (1951 Refugee Convention, 3). The Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 recognizes the right of persons to seek asylum from persecution in other countries. • 23. What Is Andrew Carnegie Unethical Andrew Carnegie was a man who believed in the phrase Survival of the fittest. He became a shining example of this quote by climbing the ladder from a lowly Irish immigrant to one of the richest men in history. Through aggressive and sometimes unethical means, Carnegie was able to establish firm dominance over the steel industry in the late 19th century and through the early 20th century. The manner in which Carnegie treated his workers, the government, and his competition ensured that he would forever be remembered as a industrial legend. From underpaying his employees to buying out his competitors, Carnegie continued to make the maximum amount of profit in mind (Valentine, Baker). Being a man coming into America with nothing and climbing up to become one of the richest men in the world, he would eventually become the poster boy for every Rag to Riches story. Before he became the multi million dollar tyrant we all know him as, his first job was a in a factory working as a bobbin boy. He received a measly dollar and twenty cents a week (Carnegie 34). It can be implied that this is why Carnegie was a firm believer in social darwinism and the concept of free enterprise, Carnegie believed that opportunity was there for anyone willing to seize it. • 26. Observation Of Solar Eclipses Solar eclipses provide a unique opportunity to observe the sun itself owing to the moon providing a clear view of the solar chromosphere. Observations of the sun during a solar eclipse lead to a variety of discoveries ranging from the discovery of elements to a deeper understanding of solar activities such as coronal mass ejections. The use of equipment in new ways allows scientists to make previously unimaginable discoveries as Pierre Jansen discovered in 1868 while observing the sun. With the knowledge of atomic emission spectroscopy and new instruments Pierre Jansen observed the spectrum of the chromosphere that was briefly visible at the beginning and at the end of totality and saw a bright yellow emission line (Pasachoff, 2009). After further observation without an eclipse he and Norman Lockyer independently confirmed that this line indicated the presence of a new element named helium. Observations of this nature can produce false positives as was the case for coronium. From solar observation green, red, and several fainter emission lines (Pasachoff, 2009) were observed and attributed to an element named coronium. The existence of such an element was later disproved when it was discovered that these lines came from highly ionized states of iron, calcium and nickel (an astro...). This is because society teaches people norms that women must follow in order for them to be respected. As we have discussed in class, this is the idea of subjectivity because all of these social codes are predetermined and that makes them very difficult to change. One example of this was in the article when it talked about how women often chose their careers around them someday becoming mothers. Modern cars are made to crumple on impact and take some of this force, but vehicle design is not always enough. While your car structure is crumpling to take on the force of the crash, the people and items in the vehicle still have kinetic energy as well. This means that your car will lose energy and stop moving, but your body will still be flying through space. Seatbelts will stop your body from moving, but your head will keep moving forward. In severe accidents, this can cause your head to slam into the windshield or steering wheel. To prevent this from happening, airbags are used to slow down the momentum of your head. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His form of writing is a count down from ten to five, foreshadowing that Kendrick is counting down towards something significant. Ten Hail Mary s I meditate for practice (line 37) is an allusion to the Catholic prayer, Hail Mary, which is often recited ten times. This is another spiritual symbol: using God to heal the dilemmas being faced. This line also alludes to Tupac Shakur s Hail Mary , one who shared the same views on oppression as Beyonce and Lamar. In lines 38, moving backwards refers to how throughout the first few bars of his verse, Lamar is literally counting backwards. Line 39 is an allusion to his hometown of Compton and all neighborhoods in the African American communities affected by high crime rates, murder, poverty where Eight blocks refers to Section 8 Housing. Lamar states seven misleading statements about my persona (line 40), alluding to the stereotypical and derogatory terms associated with being an African American male. Linked with its previous line, Six headlights (line 41) refers to the six lights on a police car and police brutality on men of color. The countdown ends at Five O which is slang for police and a metaphor of death. Five O is simply a symbol of the short lived lives of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement. The countdown is a diction, suggesting the idea that African Americans are killed in the early stages of their lives, hence the killings of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Violence In Frantz Fanon s The Wretched Of The Earth Frantz Fanon, in his book The Wretched of the Earth, seeks to define violence and its justification in the context of colonialism. To understand Fanon s justification for violence, it is necessary to learn how Fanon defines violence. Fanon s definitions of violence range from psychological to historical to cultural, eventually leading the colonized to redirect this violence to the colonizer as a cleansing ritual. In The Wretched of the Earth, The first type of violence that Fanon addresses is physical and bodily harm. Fanon says that, Their first confrontation was colored by violence and their cohabitation or rather the exploitation of the colonized by the colonizer continued at the point of the bayonet and under cannon fire (Fannon 2). Immediately, the colonizer begins to imprison the indigenous people for the colonist s benefit. He then defines ontological and epistemological violence. Ontological and epistemological violence happens as the colonizer begins to steal the identity of the people they control. This violence creates the bounds between the colonizer and the colonized. It traps the indigenous people with slave identities, marking them as natives. Once this violence occurs, colonizers begin to forget the greater reality of their actions. It becomes a Manichean paradigm. There is no longer a gray area, just black and white, good and evil. Fanon even goes so far as writing that Sometimes this Manichaeism reaches its logical conclusion and dehumanizes the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I Want To Stay On The Home Front Dbq Essay During WWI everyone was affected, whether it was the soldier in the battle field coming home with shell shock, or the children left without a father for a few crucial years, or even a lifetime, or the wives, mothers and grandmothers left at home to either pick up the financial burden or to continue on in the best way they knew how without their loved ones. Overall if a person s country was at war then they were affected and had to make sacrifices of food, gas, and other supplies necessary to fuel the war effort. Europeans were affected on the home front when women had to go to work, when they gained a greater sense of nationalism, and also when they had to ration food, and produce as much as possible. When labor shortages got to the point where women were brought in in order to fill the void, it signalled a turning point in history. It opened the door for women to stay in the work force even after the war had ended. The need for workers was severe, to the point where 792,000 women were added to the industrial workforce in Britain between 1914 and 1918. (Document 1) This is a huge ... • 43. A Day At The Trenches Narrative Report I was more than grateful to discover a parcel of crackers and supplies arrive in my name. I thank you for your remarkable support towards me over the course of this seemingly endless war. After spending a year and a half under constant hell fire in a strange and distant place, I am more than eager to come home to you. When I initially enlisted in the Royal Army, I felt it was my duty to defend our glorious Empire against the malevolent hands of the vicious Jerries. I expected to gloriously march into Europe; but with every incident bringing me closer and closer to death, I feel as if I signed myself up for a suicide mission. The day I boarded the RMS Alaunia is still clear in my memory. Thousands of men like me were crammed into the vessel, anticipating the imminent adventure and the chance to travel abroad. Everyone was certain that this war would soon be over and that we would all peacefully return as a decorated war hero. After doing a mock attack at the park, I was ... I often spend the rest of my day standing on the fire steps waiting for something to happen; But of course, little happened. Sometimes, men would be asked to go on a trench raid. If the attack was successful, the soldiers would receive a two week home leave along with some other supplies. I went on a couple of these missions, and I saw many of my friends get caught on barbed wire to picked away by machine gun. • 45. The s The House Is Black Forugh Farrokhzad s The House is Black is a harrowing, disturbing, artfully made documentary, one of the few films directed by the Iranian poet Farrokhzad. Her subject here is leprosy, and she looks directly, uncompromisingly, at the devastation that this disease causes the human body. She does not look away, not from the cruelest deformations this disease generates. Her purpose was to expose the punishing and superfluous way that lepers continued to be treated in Iran, funneled into quarantined leper colonies where their disease went relatively untreated, causing them to slowly and painfully degenerate. Farrokhzad s film was deliberate in raising cognizance about these conditions, and to emphasize that this situation need not be. Produced during the reign of statist documentary cinema, Farrokhzad s work was a wild contrast from the other documentary films created in this timeframe. Farrokhzad s The House is Black deliberately and openly disobeyed the official style of Iranian documentaries during the 1960s, paving the way for Iranian New Wave cinema. From striking mirror scenes to deep pans of a classroom, Farrokhzad s auteurist interventions are more obvious than subtle although Farrokhzad s directorial hand is heavy in The House is Black, this documentary was among the first to reflect a powerful yet unnoticed reality against the wishes of the Iranian government. Just when the reader had thought it couldn t get worse for the troubled boy, he aches, we were soon deprived of even the small comfort of weeping together. Even after he shares with us that he has been thrown in a sack and basically deprived of his basic human rights, this was a new rock bottom for Equiano. No love, no shelter, no family. It s the horrible details Equiano writes about that gives the reader mental images of him being torn from his family and village and sold into slavery with his sister in North America and West Indies. It isn t until later on where Equiano and his sister reconnect. Equiano weeps of deep emotion as he and his sister reunite, and persuades the reader how terrible the masters were for tearing them apart. When these people knew we were brother and sister they indulged us together; and the man, to whom I supposed we belonged, lay with us, he in the middle, while she and I held one another by the hands across his breast all night; and thus for a while we forgot our misfortunes in the joy of being together: but even this small comfort was soon to have an end; for scarcely had the fatal morning appeared, when she was again torn from me for ever! The context of this piece and descriptive, heart wrenching words Equiano uses appeals to the pathos side of his story. This emotional plea helps the reader grasp what it must have felt like to be reunited and torn, yet again from a beloved. It is the same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
