Understanding Deaf Culture
Deaf people are often seen incorrectly. According to a legend, a Greek mythical character named
Procrustes, invited tired travelers to rest at his home. Procrustes gave out special accommodations that
fit everyone, regardless of the guests size. When the guest was shorter than the bed Procrustes owned,
Procrustes would stretch the guest s body to fit and when the guest s legs were longer than the bed,
Procrustes would chop off their legs so they would fit the bed. Aimee K. Whyte and Douglas A.
Guiffrida explained the way deaf people are viewed: Deaf people are often stretched or cut short to
assimilate with the majority culture...Deaf people struggle against a procrustean system of hearing and
speech and continually experience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In desperation, the weekend before she was required to get up in front of class and recite a poem, the
student went to her mom and asked for help. While her mom could not read the poem either, her mom
always had a good idea. Her mom grabbed the girl s sister to help translate and with the sister s help,
her mother begged their neighbor to help them. The neighbor quickly agreed to help, explaining this
poem was her favorite. She knew storytelling was an important part of learning in the Deaf culture. It
was also the best way for the girl to learn. Rita Colasent, the author of The Power of True Expression
explained the next part of the story as follows, We [the mother and her two daughters] were able to
take what we were learning [about the poem] and match it to our feelings, our own experiences, and
our own insights as the message of the Raven unraveled before our very eyes (Colasent 1996: 378)!
The girl later explained how she was not only telling the story; she also took on the role of the speaker.
The girl s teacher and fellow students were truly amazed at the performance. Her teacher was very
impressed. This is one example of how storytelling is effective when learning in this culture.
Deaf people have many important values that must be shown instead of being told. There are critical
differences between hearing and Deaf people. Deaf people find power in working together, whereas
hearing people find power in working alone without depending on

The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy Essay
The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy
During the oil and energy crisis of the mid 1970s
Americans became painfully aware of the consequences of the
United States dependence on foreign sources of oil.
Unfortunately, research and exploration for alternative sources of oil in North America has not been
pursued vigorously enough to cease such foreign dependence. As a result, in the mid 1990s Americans
find themselves in the same precarious position as they were during the
1970s. The Persian Gulf War in 1991 was all the proof needed to convince the United States of how
strongly oil still influences our foreign policy and international relations in general. Oil and U.S.

However, the issues surrounding oil did become more clearly defined. According to Beaver
(1991), the availability and cost of conventional energy sources; national security concerns; the
technical, legal, and economic uncertainties related to synthetic fuels; and the emergence of large oil
companies as major forces in shaping energy policy. These issues that became salient in the 1920s
remain relevant to the 1990s (Beaver, 1991, p.
241).
Both the Wilson and Harding administrations took proactive foreign policy actions in order to ensure
adequate supplies of oil for the booming economy. Both administrations assisted major U.S.
companies in their attempts to secure foreign oil agreements. For example, the government tried to
persuade Great Britain and the
Netherlands to allow U.S. oil companies into the Middle East and Pacific regions where they
controlled most of the oil reserves. The U.S. government hoped to gain an open door policy in oil
exploration. However, U.S. diplomacy failed to secure this from either the British or the Dutch.
According to Beaver, Such failures frustrated U.S. officials. Frank
G. Lane, secretary of the interior, called British control of Middle Eastern oil a menace. In fact, anti
British sentiments prompted Congress to pass retaliatory legislation barring foreigners from acquiring
oil leases on public lands (Beaver, 1991, p. 241).

Key Characteristics Of Gentrification
Gentrification is the process of renovating and revitalizing undervalued and dilapidated residential and
commercial areas by the middle or upper class. It is driven by the notion called the rent gap . The rent
gap is the difference between current rent and potential rental income. People will invest in these
deteriorated urban areas to obtain potential rent in the future. Consequently, once new money flows in
these areas, it forces rent to surge. High rents force low income residents to relocate from the area.
This is one of the key characteristics of gentrification, the displacement of local residents.
Gentrification is driven by both private investment and government policies.
Gentrification is a growing concern in New York. It causes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Nation publication writes Miguel Robles Durán.....makes a convincing case that among the most
useful tools are limited equity cooperatives of the kind established under New York s 1955 Limited
Profit Housing Companies Act, better known as Mitchell Lama. Under these programs, households
own shares in a building, but the price at which they can sell their shares is limited for a certain period
of time, usually twenty years. These arrangements offer stability of ownership without the
skyrocketing prices that accompany real estate speculation. There are numerous benefits of this
program. Mitchell Lama Housing projects promote economic and social integration in their
communities. They have become stable and burgeoning communities. The integral components in
ensuring the success of this program are maintaining the quality of the cooperatives and making sure
housing units over time are slowly pushed to market values. As the designated time for subsidized rent
ends, the surge in rents forces some households to leave the area. However, if there was a more
gradual increase in rent prices over time, then this would not be the case. Oversight of these
cooperatives is pivotal to their success. State Sen. Jeff Klein said that The Mitchell Lama program, I
believe, was probably the greatest housing program we ever created in New York State because it was
based on a very simple premise: that various

Speech On Giant Panda
The Giant Panda
Introduction
Ailuropoda melanoleuca commonly known as Giant Panda, is a species of bear that is found in the
mountains of central and western China. Due to its unique and adorable appearance, it has been the
symbol of the World Wide Fund for Nature since it was founded in 1961. Historically, they inhabit
broadleaf and coniferous forest with a thick bamboo under storey at elevations between 5000 and
13000 feet. Fossil record of giant panda have been found in many places across china as well as its
neighbor countries. However, today this species can only be found in merely six mountains in China:
Xiaoxiangling, Daxiangling, Liangshan, Qinling, Minshan and Qionglai [1], and has been categorized
as Endangered on the IUCN Red List [2], which means the it has a high risk of extinction in the wild.

fragmentation and migration issues persist, the giant panda species could face a 25% loss of genetic

Tutsi, and Twa for hundreds of years. The three ethnic groups shared many things, such as:
Kinyarwanda, which is their language, culture, and customs. The ethnic division in 1994 was 1% Twa,
15% Tutsi, and 84% Hutu. The Rwandan President, Gregoire Keyibanda, wanted the Tutsi refugees to

The Comparison of Marxists and Elitists Accounts of...
The comparison of Marxists and Elitists accounts of political power.
In this essay we will try to compare the Marxists and the Elitists views of political power and what
makes these views different. Before we start analyzing it should be remarked that the Elitists approach
is closely connected to the works and ideas of Gaetano Mosca, Roberts Michels and C. Wright Mills
and the founder of such an approach to studying political power (W. Pareto), who opposed his ideas to
those of Marx and Gramsci. Therefore, there is a conflict of ideas, which is to be unveiled in this
essay.
Firstly, Marxists approach to political power is to be briefly overviewed. The cornerstone of all Marx s
work is the base superstructure model every aspect of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This idea reminds of the Nietzsche s Ubermensch, who is the one to power the others. The similarity
of these ideas lies in the fact that in Elitist s theory they assume that all people are not created equal:
some are stronger, more intelligent, more artistic, etc. Of course, not all abilities lead to economic
wealth or political power however, those people who have the most of the particular abilities which a
society rewards become the political elite. Here we can draw a line to cross out Marx s idea that
people are born equal and the only thing that makes them different is being attributed to certain social
class and therefore, there personal characteristics defer the social structure the economic structure.
Another Elitist Gaetano Mosca proposed the idea that there is a ruling elite, so called Classe Politica
(political elite) and Social forces those social and economic categories on whom the society depends
on because of their particular abilities. In other words, not the whole layer of elite actually rules
political power is the representative one social forces have a major influence in them. Moreover,
political elite are also the representatives of the masses all elites stabilize their rule by making it
acceptable to the masses. This is achieved by political formula , e.g.:

The Change in Resistance of a Carbon Paper
The Change in Resistance of a Carbon Paper
Introduction
The aim of this experiment is to see how the resistance of a carbon coated piece of paper changes
when the different variables change.
Variables
A variable is a change in an experiment that could alter the outcome/results of that experiment, and for
this experiment the main variables are type of paper, width of paper, length of paper, and temperature.
We are going to be studying how changing the width of the paper affects the resistance, and so to
ensure a fair test we will have to keep all of the other variables constant, as if they were also changing

Preliminary Experiment
The purpose of the preliminary experiment was to decide on an appropriate length to keep the paper
constant at, and an appropriate shunt for the ammeter. The layout and format is the same as the main
experiment (see later).
We tested the various ammeter shunts, and decided to use the 10mA shunt, as it gave a reading in the
middle of the scale, whereas the other shunts had given readings off or almost off the scale.
We also found that 32.5cm was the optimum length for the paper, as it puts the reading at about 10 on
the scale, which is a good as it ensures that as we decrease the width (hence decreasing the amperes),
the readomg will not go off the scale as it was high to start with if we had started with a length that put
it at something lower like 3 to start with, it could have gone off the bottom of the scale and we would
have to start over.

The Danger Of A Single Story By Chimamanda Adicie Essay
Single Stories are Problematic
In the world we live in now it has become easy to stereotype and create a single story about certain
people and situations, whether it s intentional or not. In 2009, a Nigerian novelist named Chimamanda
Adichie gave an amazing TED talk called The Danger of the Single Story . A single story more or less
means an incomplete or inaccurate viewpoint of a person or culture based on a story created from a
single experience. When one hears the same story over and over again, we start believing only that
story. Adichie claims that creating single stories is problematic and rely on power, a single story I
decided to present is how people believe police officers are abusing their power, and I believe the
media is at fault. For one to truly understand a story we must listen to the root of the story. Her speech
made me realize and view things differently. In the The Danger of a Single Story , Chimamanda
Adicie tells her own personal experiences of a single story and how that can become challenging. She
talks about when she started reading and writing at a young age. She read British and American
children s books. When she started writing all her characters were white and blue eyed just like in the
books. It wasn t until writers Chinua Achebe and Camara Laye that she realized people like her,
people of color, could exist in literature. Adichie s says what the discovery of African writers did for
me was this: It saved me from having a single story

Mike and Shelly Sackett, who started the business in 1986 (Kaufman Lloyd, 2006, p. 6). Their motto

Probably the most dramatic advance was the bread machine. This product has revolutionized the way
we bake bread. The bread machine takes away all the work. You simply pour the ingredients into the
machine, then turn it on and in a few hours you have hot, homemade bread. Most machines even have
a timer so that when you walk in the door after a hard day s work, you will arrive to enticing scents of
fresh baked bread. This is all possible because of the invention of a computer chip called the Fuzzy
Logic microchip which can automatically regulate cooking times and temperatures (see item in
Appendix). This chip is also starting to appear in electric steamers and rice cookers as well as bread
machines (Newhart, 2006, p. 85).

Ice Life Fighting in the National Hockey League(NHL) has been an ongoing brutal way of getting
fans excited. The past years the number of fights have dropped, with only 344 fights last season, the
fewest number within the past 15 years (Adam Vingan). For those people who oppose fighting this
comes as good news, as this area of the Hockey has been investigated heavily. In 1922, rule 56 was
introduced into the National Hockey League which was supposed to regulate the fighting in the NHL
and was called the official NHL rulebook(Wikipedia). Still today we have fighting in the National
Hockey league even with rule 56 strictly enforced. It s not just the fighting that s the problem
anymore, it s the concussions and other side effects/injuries from it. Players are suffering far greater
head trauma each time they get in a fight which further on in life leads to multiple health problems. If
fighting were to be banned in the NHL, would it still be the same? Some may say yes, but others
speculate no. For now, fans don t see any changes coming soon so why not enjoy it better yet play it.

Questions on Economics, the Recession, and the Federal...
Part 8 A recession is typically defined as at least two consecutive quarters of economic decline in
GDP. When this happens, unemployment tends to rise, personal income may drop, and the price of
goods and services become volatile. Most agree that it is impossible to eliminate recession in a
capitalistic economy, since it is so cyclic. Recessions may trim weak business and allow stronger ones
to survive by employing techniques that improve quality and service. Recession does not mean
depression; it simply means that there are peaks and valleys within the overall economic system. Now
that economies are more global though, these dips have a far more reaching set of consequences. In
most firms, however, recession may result in some lay offs, but it also may mean greater attention to
sustainability, cost cutting, and a more lean and strategic approach to the individual product or service
(Moffatt, 2009).
Part 9 The Federal Reserve System was created in 1913 to act as the central bank of the United States
and to oversee the nation s monetary policy, regulate banking, and make financial systems stable.
Over the past two years, though, the Fed has faced serious challenges as it responded to severe
recessionary times. The TARP program was a new tool to provide capital to banks, as well as new
programs to stabilize money market mutual funds and short term paper markets. TARP and TALF

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Essay
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be a very serious and debilitating condition that occurs after
a person has been exposed to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical danger happened or
was threatened. The kinds of traumatic events triggering PTSD in people include violent personal
assaults (rape, mugging), natural disasters (hurricanes, tornadoes), man made disasters (bombings),
accidents or military combat. People who suffer from PTSD often relive the experience through
nightmares and flashbacks, have difficulty sleeping, and feel detached or estranged, and these
symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly impair a person s daily life.

Rates of PTSD are much higher in post conflict settings such as Algeria (37%), Cambodia (28%),
Ethiopia (16%), and Gaza (18%)(de Jong et al., 2001).
The first stressor criterion specifies that a person has been exposed to a catastrophic event involving
actual or threatened death or injury. The second criterion, or intrusive recollection, includes symptoms
that are distinctive and easily identified of PTSD. These emotions manifest in daytime fantasies,
traumatic nightmares, and psychotic reenactments know as flashbacks. The third criteria,
avoidant/numbing, consists of symptoms that reflect behavioral, cognitive, or emotional strategies the
PTSD patients use in an attempt to reduce the likelihood that they will expose themselves to trauma
related stimuli. The fourth criteria, hyper arousal, most closely resembles those seen in panic and
generalized anxiety disorders. While symptoms such as insomnia and irritability are generic anxiety
symptoms, hyper vigilance and startle are more characteristic of PTSD. The fifth criteria, duration,
specifies how long symptoms must persist in order to qualify for a PTSD diagnosis. The last criteria,
functional significance, specify that the survivor must experience significant social, occupational, or
other distress as a result of these symptoms. Since 1980, there has been a great deal of attention

Essay on North Shore Oil Exploration and Drilling
North Shore Oil Exploration and Drilling
There is some evidence that oil exists under the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This has led to a
huge debate as to whether or not companies should be allowed to drill for this oil. A law was passed
by congress in 1980 that states production of oil and gas from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is
prohibited and no leasing or other development leading to production of oil and gas from the [Refuge]

Congress would have liked to time the drilling in ANWR in correlation with the highest world market
prices for oil. Since those prices are so hard to predict, America feels like now is as good of time as
any. Elliott Negin, spokesman for the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington, said the oil
in ANWR will have no effect on the global price of oil because it is to small an amount. Even pro
drilling lobbyists agree that the amount of oil in ANWR would not affect America s oil problems. Why
then do they continue to lobby pro drilling in the refuge?
What are some benefits of drilling in ANWR? Unemployment is currently at an all time high. With the
establishment of oil rigs and drills around the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, there would be a total
of 700,000 new jobs for Americans. True, these jobs will disappear in a few decades when the drilling
in completed, but maybe by then there will be new opportunities for the workers. By drilling in
ANWR, we would reduce the amount of imported oil by 5 percent which is equivalent to one year s
total imports. It would also keep the price of gas lower here then in other countries around the world.

centuries, using hunting and gathering techniques. Even the Inupiat Mayor has publicly endorsed the
idea of drilling in ANWR. He

after being hit by a drone flown by a family friend. Oscar Webb s eye was sliced in half by a propeller
after the operator, Simon Evans, lost control of the drone. The toddler, from Stourport on Severn,
Worcestershire, will need several operations before he can have a prosthetic eye fitted. It was the first
drone injury Oscar s surgeon had seen, but she said it was inevitable there would be many more.
Those are just a couple of reasons and instandents why drones should be banned from the

Poetry Analysis for Sunshine by Matisyahu
Drury 1
Caitlan Drury
Poetry Analysis for Sunshine By Matisyahu Many songs use different literary devices to communicate
a message out to the audience. One of those songs is Sunshine by Matisyahu, which displays
symbolism, imagery, figures of speech, tone, and theme. Others might not enjoy the song because it
gives mixed signals. Although that is true, there are much more reasons to why someone would enjoy
it. Sunshine by Matisyahu is an effective song because the artist uses a potpourri of literary terms to
present his meaning to the audience. Matisyahu uses symbolism to define the deeper meaning of never
giving up in his song. In Sunshine , the artist says, You re my golden sunshine , which symbolizes the

Never meant to leave you all alone, said I d be your shelter from the storm, now your clothes have all
been torn, kingdom sacked, attacked, and dethroned . Verse two shows that there were some problems
in the artist s life and that he had lost what was important to him, but repeats the chorus after every
verse to show that even though he had some falls, he still got back up to conquer his goal. The theme
of the song is very significant because it shows the audience to never give up. Sunshine by Matisyahu
is a great song, although many people might not agree. Many people might not enjoy the song
Sunshine by Matisyahu because it gives mixed signals and does not make sense in some parts of it.
Keep on moving to the first rays of dawn, keeping it on til the day stays strong, keepin til the night
time blazes on, all along I keep singing my song. I said this phase is always, sometimes I get so crazed
. This first verse is remarkably jumbled and confusing a person could dislike this song all because of
it. What does This phase is always, sometimes I get so crazed mean? That verse starts the song and the
audience would not understand what is being said. What does the artist mean? Or maybe the chorus is
just repeated a bit too much, which makes the song annoying for the audience. Yes, these arguments
are reasonable, but they are not true. Some of the audience might not enjoy Sunshine , but it is still a

Ontario Sex Education Curriculum Analysis
Being a parent is already hard enough, but adding social media into the equation, and suddenly topics
like: sexting, gender fluidity and anal sex are taking the foreground. In response to this unregulated
adult information, Service Ontario who made the Ontario Sex Education Curriculum has decided to
take necessary steps and include more similar topics into elementary schools.
All education has its own purpose, even sex education. According to Service Ontario, The revised
health and physical education curriculum is based on the vision that the knowledge and skills students
acquire in the program will benefit, throughout their lives and enable them to thrive in an ever

The school leads the sex education and has the curriculum to first educate students. It is not only the
responsibility of the school or government; the parents also have responsibilities to teach their
children at home. According to A Parent s Guide, it says, Parents help their children form values about
relationships and behaviours and their sexual health. (Ontario, 2015) The schools, parents, and
communities are responsible for educations of children to feel involved in the changed and new
concept society has developed. Most parents tend to avoid this kind of communication with their
children. Parents are the most important role models to give the proper ideals on the issues. The results
and conclusions depend on the children, not the parents or communities. Parents should give the right
for the children to decide about the issues without forcing any specific opinions on them. Society
should give the opportunities to the children to face the challenges that come ahead, and make
decisions to solve problems based on the education they had in their childhood. With the decisions,
children or students can develop their ideas of the sexual issues and topics by themselves. Through
this stage, they are able to grow up further with

The Sarbanes Oxley Act ( Sox )
The Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX) was put into legislation on July 30, 2002 by President George W.
Bush, for the purpose of regulating the financial practices and a host of other corporate and securities
issues for all publically traded organizations. Essentially, it was an attempt to impose tighter controls
on the financial reporting, to try and provide more transparency in financial reporting, and to hold
people accountable in the financial reporting. (Dewey, 2012). It s important to note that the SOX law
applies to all companies registered under Section 12 of the Securities and Exchange Act of 1934.
Privately held and non for profit companies are not impacted by the SOX law, however many have
elected to voluntarily comply with the legislation. The law was enacted due to several corporate
scandals in early 2000 2002; Enron, WorldCom and Tyco to name just a few. The early 2000 s will
always be remembered for the deep recession and decline in economic activity, not just in the US, but
in the global marketplace as well. As with any legislation, there are pro s and con s. I believe the law
was the right thing to enact; the problem many see with it is the manner in which it was mandated.
Many would even argue that the law was not needed since we already have laws in place to protect
and prosecute fraudulent behavior, but those were clearly not strict enough given the billions of dollars
that investors lost. I m sure in the near future, we ll see that SOX doesn t

Gender Bias Essay
Gender bias, also known as sexism, is a full of attitudes, laws, taboos, preferences, and behaviors that
differentiates and discriminates against either sex. These may be a position of which male dominance
and female subjugation in the modern society. It could also be a form of sexual stereotypes between
men and women, these are commonly experienced in employment versus other positions. A final place
that discrimination is faced is the academic environment, the female to male ratios are not in sync in
certain programs and courses because of this and it is pressuring men and women to not go into
certain fields and do what they love and please. Most advertisements on Television, magazines,
newspapers, online ad s, use a charged sexually image with a female as the star. Women are to be a
pleasure for men, and nothing else. Many people have different opinions on genders and sexuality and
that is okay, but sometimes you just need to keep them to yourselves. I was walking through Walmart
with a friend the other night, and we turned the corner to go down an aisle and they were walking
towards us. As we approached them, they moved out of the way, so we could get through. There were
5 male specimens, around the ages of 20 24, two white, one Hispanic, and two black guys. Most of
them were very tall, both white guys were thin and lean, the Hispanic guy was short and lean, and the
two black guys were tall and thick. All five of the guys dress in upper class clothes such as Nike,
Adidas, Under armor. As I observed these guys, they were in a group of friends. They were walking
according to race, two white guys in the front, and then the Hispanic guy was in the middle, and
following him was the two black guys. They were very respectful when we turned the corner and let
us go through, as we passed them they went back into their formation. Two white guys in the front,
and then the Hispanic in the middle, and the two black guys in the back. I also observed that they were
having separate conversations among themselves. As it appeared to me, it looked like they were just
socializing and spending time together, and goofing around. They could have been shopping but none

Jesus Christ As The Center Of Discipleship
When someone think about Jesus Christ being the center of discipleship there are two things that
comes to mind; change and commitment within the disciple. One day Jesus Christ was walking by the
sea of Galilee when He saw Simon and Andrew fishing; he said to them, Follow me and I will make
you fishers of men Matthew 4:19 . The next verse show them immediately dropping their nets and
followed Jesus Christ. The actions of Simon and Andrew is described best by Putman, Harrington, and
Coleman in the text book Disciple Shift. The text breaks Matthew 4:19 into three key elements; which
are Following Christ, is being changed by Christ, and is committed to the mission of Christ . It is the
intent of this paper to show the importance of Jesus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They realize it is a lifelong process in which God molds them to be more like Jesus. Paul said in
Romans 8:29, For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his
Son, that he might be the first born among many brethren . As a disciple of Jesus Christ our hearts
have to be Christ centered, so our lives will follow and show forth His glory.
Obedience is defined as defined by the American Heritage College thesaurus, The quality, state, or act
of willingly to carrying out the wishes of others Carrying out the wishes of others for a disciple this
would be the commandants of Jesus Christ; one commandment is that of the Great Commission.
Matthew 28:19 20 says, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded
you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world, Amen. As a disciple of Jesus Christ
obedience is a key factor, but we cannot do it alone we need the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy
Spirit will guide, teach, and seal us with the seal of salvation the Holy Spirit will also be a comforter
for the believers. John 14:16 says, And I pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that
he may abide with you forever. The very next verse tells

Gilgamesh As An Existential Hero
Incredibly, one of the first recorded written works has much in common with one of the most modern
philosophical movements. Though the Epic of Gilgamesh was written from oral narration centuries
before the philosophy of existentialism was developed, the epic encompasses many of the main ideas
of Sartrean existentialism. Jean Paul Sartre developed existentialism as a characterization of the
human condition, and the movement that followed his ideas formed distinct literary tropes. Among
these is the existential hero, and in this case, the failed existential hero. Initially, Gilgamesh shows
development, becoming more important on a universal scale by becoming essential . However,
Gilgamesh, when faced with the fact of his own mortality, fails to accept it and is crippled by his own
existential dread. Though Gilgamesh elevates himself to a human living with essence, in the
existential view, he is unable to overcome the questions of mortality that plague him in the aftermath
of tragedy.
Existentialism was a philosophic and literary movement that peaked in popularity in the mid 1900 s.
First expounded by Sartre, the movement was initially a description of humanity, and attempted to
define what it meant to be human. In defining this, existentialism addressed questions about human
mortality, and the significance of life. One of the main principles in Sartrean existentialism is the
concept that existence precedes essence (Existentialism, Stanford Encyclopedia of

The Plague by Albert Camus
Running Out of Time Time is only running out, and it is one of the most vital and overlooked qualities
of life. Albert Camus highlights the theme of time in his 1947 novel, The Plague. Through the use of
allegory and point of view, Camus substantiates that when people are not aware of time and its
advancing, they are wasting the precious and limited time of their lives. He constantly establishes that
the amount of consciousness obtained by a person is the difference between spending time wisely and
foolishly. In order to fully utilize it, people need to be aware of time and its passing. Camus uses point
of view to demonstrate through Tarrou s eyes his vision of time. ...Tarrou added: Query: How contrive
not to waste one s time? Answer: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In its most basic sense, absurdity addresses the meaninglessness of life, with special attention directed
to divine disavowal. Jared White utilizes Absurdism to highlight the thoughts and meanings that go
from individuality to the community. Absurdism is defined as the philosophy that humans live in
essential isolation in an irrational and meaningless world. White says that when people realize their
time has almost no value in the large scale, they give it up to the remainder of the world. He also
claims that despite of the humans absurd settings, personal gains are favored. White makes clear that,
taken literally, the plague of rats is an epidemic, but, symbolically, the plague of humans is a
pandemic. The smaller outbreak only parallels the massive disease that people are infected with.
White also argues that The Plague is in part a historical allegory, in which the plague signifies the
German occupation of France from 1940 to 1944 during World War II. In a deft narrative act, Camus
allegorically uses the plague to consider not only his personal situation sick, exiled, and restricted but
also the European conflict. Bernard further elaborates that Camus wrote La Peste with the plague as an
obvious reference to the kind of imprisonment [. . .] the Germans imposed on occupied France (165).
Oran is cut off from the outside world, which is equivalent to France; the different attitudes of the

Essay on Smithtn Ltd. Claim for Rights
Smithton ltd (formerly Hobart) brought a claim for a loss suffered when the two companies
Insureprofit ltd and Mariona ltd failed on their obligations to pay margin calls under contract with the
claimant. The claim was brought against Mr Naggar who was a majority shareholder of Hobart and
himself and his family owned and controlled the two companies who went insolvent. Hobart alleged
that Mr Nagger was either a de facto or shadow director and had breached the duties he owed towards
the company.
The judge in this case, recognised that there is a distinction in the tests between shadow and the facto
directors, as described by David Richards J in the McKillen judgement, however the parties decided
not to make a distinction between the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hobart claimed that Mr Pincus, Mr Keane and Mr Morley (the nominated directors) effectively did
what Mr Naggar instructed them on what to do rather then exercising their own powers. Mr Naggar
however denied any involvement with the day to day management of Hobart or that he never gave any
directions to the directors on what to do at the Board meetings
Re Hydrodam explains that a de facto director is a person who assumes to act as a director. To
establish that a person was a de facto director you must prove that he undertook functions in relation
to the company that only a director could discharge. It is not sufficient to show that he was concerned
in the management of the company s affairs.
Mr Naggar in contrast to the facts of this case never claimed to be a director of the company or acted
as one.
Some of the claims brought forward by Hobart in relation to Mr Naggar being a de facto director are
linked to the fact that he was sent daily Open Position Reports that sets out their lists of every client
and market position of the company. Hobart insisted that the fact that he was receiving the OPRs
proved that he was a director rather than a client or shareholder.
Nevertheless even though Mr Naggar insisted on receiving the OPRs it was merely because is
particular situation were he was the joint owner of the group of which both Hobart and the Connected
Companies were part of.

magazines, television, and also the internet. Advertisements are commonly used to draw the attention
of consumers and persuade them to buy and use their product or get them to do an act supported by

Republic Of Outsiders Analysis
Activism is defined as the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or
social change by the Oxford Dictionary online. Traditionally, this is the commonly accepted and
widespread definition used to label the renegades of society, the fighters for justice, and the believers
in change. This trend of societal self modification has predicated our prevailing view of activism,
because social change is, and always has been, a part of human evolution. Nowadays we are faced
with a polymorphous concept of activism that baffles everyone from academics to activists
themselves. Over the past decade, new forms of pseudo activism have appeared, and have proven to
be increasingly difficult to classify under the preexisting categorizations. In Alissa Quart s book

Performance art is often seen as social change campaigns but by analyzing on a case by case basis, we
can see how some are indeed activist movements whereas others are centered more on making a bold,
artistic statement by using controversial contemporary issues as a platform to do so. Emma Sulkowitz,
or mattress girl as she has been dubbed, is primarily a performance artist, dedicating her life to her
artwork. Her ancillary aim is to propagate awareness of sexual violence and rape on college campuses.
Due to her secondary, more public goal, she s seen as an activist whereas in reality she s purely an
icon for genuine activist groups fighting for this particular cause. I would nevertheless consider art as
a novel, and useful expansion on the existing and traditional forms of activism. These individuals with
their unique passions and interests have enriched and altered mainstream culture to a certain extent.
They may not have the intentions to do so, but their actions instigated xxx think of a word that led to

The Rise Of The Roman Empire
In 448 AD, Greek writer and historian Priscus journeyed from Constantinople to meet with Attila the
Hun. Pricus wrote down the events of his journey, leaving one of the few first hand accounts of a
diplomatic meeting with the Huns. His writings can tell us much about how the Huns interacted with
other cultures and societies and how Attila specifically welcomed his guests to his court. Europe, in
the 5th century, was undergoing many societal changes. Many of these changes were associated with
the introduction of new barbarian tribes barbarian is derived from the Greek word babblers meaning
anyone who did not speak Greek. During the decline of the Roman Empire, many barbaric tribes took
the opportunity to attack. The migration of barbarians closer to Rome put stress on an already stressed
Roman government. The increased tension eventually lead to an outbreak of wars. In 410 Rome was
sacked by the Visigoths lead by Alaric and was attacked again in 455 but the Vandals ( Dining With
Attila the Hun, 448 ). Attacks on the Roman Empire by the Huns did not start until the middle of the
5th century. The Huns crossed the Danube in 441, upon crossing they sacked the city of Margus ( Late
Roman Timeline ). The Huns in 442 cross the Danube again this time sacking more cities than they
had the previous year. The Roman government began to grow fearful of the army Attila had
established under his rule. This fear forced the Roman Empire to start paying Attila and his Huns from

  • 2. Understanding Deaf Culture Deaf people are often seen incorrectly. According to a legend, a Greek mythical character named Procrustes, invited tired travelers to rest at his home. Procrustes gave out special accommodations that fit everyone, regardless of the guests size. When the guest was shorter than the bed Procrustes owned, Procrustes would stretch the guest s body to fit and when the guest s legs were longer than the bed, Procrustes would chop off their legs so they would fit the bed. Aimee K. Whyte and Douglas A. Guiffrida explained the way deaf people are viewed: Deaf people are often stretched or cut short to assimilate with the majority culture...Deaf people struggle against a procrustean system of hearing and speech and continually experience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In desperation, the weekend before she was required to get up in front of class and recite a poem, the student went to her mom and asked for help. While her mom could not read the poem either, her mom always had a good idea. Her mom grabbed the girl s sister to help translate and with the sister s help, her mother begged their neighbor to help them. The neighbor quickly agreed to help, explaining this poem was her favorite. She knew storytelling was an important part of learning in the Deaf culture. It was also the best way for the girl to learn. Rita Colasent, the author of The Power of True Expression explained the next part of the story as follows, We [the mother and her two daughters] were able to take what we were learning [about the poem] and match it to our feelings, our own experiences, and our own insights as the message of the Raven unraveled before our very eyes (Colasent 1996: 378)! The girl later explained how she was not only telling the story; she also took on the role of the speaker. The girl s teacher and fellow students were truly amazed at the performance. Her teacher was very impressed. This is one example of how storytelling is effective when learning in this culture. Deaf people have many important values that must be shown instead of being told. There are critical differences between hearing and Deaf people. Deaf people find power in working together, whereas hearing people find power in working alone without depending on ... • 3. The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy Essay The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy During the oil and energy crisis of the mid 1970s Americans became painfully aware of the consequences of the United States dependence on foreign sources of oil. Unfortunately, research and exploration for alternative sources of oil in North America has not been pursued vigorously enough to cease such foreign dependence. As a result, in the mid 1990s Americans find themselves in the same precarious position as they were during the 1970s. The Persian Gulf War in 1991 was all the proof needed to convince the United States of how strongly oil still influences our foreign policy and international relations in general. Oil and U.S. Foreign Policy: Historical Issues The United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the issues surrounding oil did become more clearly defined. According to Beaver (1991), the availability and cost of conventional energy sources; national security concerns; the technical, legal, and economic uncertainties related to synthetic fuels; and the emergence of large oil companies as major forces in shaping energy policy. These issues that became salient in the 1920s remain relevant to the 1990s (Beaver, 1991, p. 241). Both the Wilson and Harding administrations took proactive foreign policy actions in order to ensure adequate supplies of oil for the booming economy. Both administrations assisted major U.S. companies in their attempts to secure foreign oil agreements. For example, the government tried to persuade Great Britain and the Netherlands to allow U.S. oil companies into the Middle East and Pacific regions where they controlled most of the oil reserves. The U.S. government hoped to gain an open door policy in oil exploration. However, U.S. diplomacy failed to secure this from either the British or the Dutch. According to Beaver, Such failures frustrated U.S. officials. Frank G. Lane, secretary of the interior, called British control of Middle Eastern oil a menace. In fact, anti British sentiments prompted Congress to pass retaliatory legislation barring foreigners from acquiring oil leases on public lands (Beaver, 1991, p. 241). ... • 4. Key Characteristics Of Gentrification Gentrification is the process of renovating and revitalizing undervalued and dilapidated residential and commercial areas by the middle or upper class. It is driven by the notion called the rent gap . The rent gap is the difference between current rent and potential rental income. People will invest in these deteriorated urban areas to obtain potential rent in the future. Consequently, once new money flows in these areas, it forces rent to surge. High rents force low income residents to relocate from the area. This is one of the key characteristics of gentrification, the displacement of local residents. The Nation publication writes Miguel Robles Durán.....makes a convincing case that among the most useful tools are limited equity cooperatives of the kind established under New York s 1955 Limited Profit Housing Companies Act, better known as Mitchell Lama. Under these programs, households own shares in a building, but the price at which they can sell their shares is limited for a certain period of time, usually twenty years. These arrangements offer stability of ownership without the skyrocketing prices that accompany real estate speculation. There are numerous benefits of this program. Mitchell Lama Housing projects promote economic and social integration in their communities. They have become stable and burgeoning communities. The integral components in ensuring the success of this program are maintaining the quality of the cooperatives and making sure housing units over time are slowly pushed to market values. As the designated time for subsidized rent ends, the surge in rents forces some households to leave the area. However, if there was a more gradual increase in rent prices over time, then this would not be the case. Oversight of these cooperatives is pivotal to their success. State Sen. Jeff Klein said that The Mitchell Lama program, I believe, was probably the greatest housing program we ever created in New York State because it was based on a very simple premise: that various ... In this essay we will try to compare the Marxists and the Elitists views of political power and what makes these views different. Before we start analyzing it should be remarked that the Elitists approach is closely connected to the works and ideas of Gaetano Mosca, Roberts Michels and C. Wright Mills and the founder of such an approach to studying political power (W. Pareto), who opposed his ideas to those of Marx and Gramsci. Therefore, there is a conflict of ideas, which is to be unveiled in this essay. Firstly, Marxists approach to political power is to be briefly overviewed. This idea reminds of the Nietzsche s Ubermensch, who is the one to power the others. The similarity of these ideas lies in the fact that in Elitist s theory they assume that all people are not created equal: some are stronger, more intelligent, more artistic, etc. Of course, not all abilities lead to economic wealth or political power however, those people who have the most of the particular abilities which a society rewards become the political elite. Here we can draw a line to cross out Marx s idea that people are born equal and the only thing that makes them different is being attributed to certain social class and therefore, there personal characteristics defer the social structure the economic structure. Another Elitist Gaetano Mosca proposed the idea that there is a ruling elite, so called Classe Politica (political elite) and Social forces those social and economic categories on whom the society depends on because of their particular abilities. In other words, not the whole layer of elite actually rules political power is the representative one social forces have a major influence in them. We also found that 32.5cm was the optimum length for the paper, as it puts the reading at about 10 on the scale, which is a good as it ensures that as we decrease the width (hence decreasing the amperes), the readomg will not go off the scale as it was high to start with if we had started with a length that put it at something lower like 3 to start with, it could have gone off the bottom of the scale and we would have to start over. • 12. The Danger Of A Single Story By Chimamanda Adicie Essay Single Stories are Problematic In the world we live in now it has become easy to stereotype and create a single story about certain people and situations, whether it s intentional or not. In 2009, a Nigerian novelist named Chimamanda Adichie gave an amazing TED talk called The Danger of the Single Story . A single story more or less means an incomplete or inaccurate viewpoint of a person or culture based on a story created from a single experience. When one hears the same story over and over again, we start believing only that story. Adichie claims that creating single stories is problematic and rely on power, a single story I decided to present is how people believe police officers are abusing their power, and I believe the media is at fault. For one to truly understand a story we must listen to the root of the story. Her speech made me realize and view things differently. In the The Danger of a Single Story , Chimamanda Adicie tells her own personal experiences of a single story and how that can become challenging. She talks about when she started reading and writing at a young age. She read British and American children s books. When she started writing all her characters were white and blue eyed just like in the books. It wasn t until writers Chinua Achebe and Camara Laye that she realized people like her, people of color, could exist in literature. Fagor includes an instructional video that includes three recipes, history of the pressure cooker, and information about its care and use. Probably the most dramatic advance was the bread machine. This product has revolutionized the way we bake bread. The bread machine takes away all the work. You simply pour the ingredients into the machine, then turn it on and in a few hours you have hot, homemade bread. Most machines even have a timer so that when you walk in the door after a hard day s work, you will arrive to enticing scents of fresh baked bread. This is all possible because of the invention of a computer chip called the Fuzzy Logic microchip which can automatically regulate cooking times and temperatures (see item in Appendix). This chip is also starting to appear in electric steamers and rice cookers as well as bread machines (Newhart, 2006, p. 85). Ice Life Of The National Hockey League Collin Kozubal Mr. O Connor English IV 11/30/2016 Ice Life Fighting in the National Hockey League(NHL) has been an ongoing brutal way of getting fans excited. The past years the number of fights have dropped, with only 344 fights last season, the fewest number within the past 15 years (Adam Vingan). For those people who oppose fighting this comes as good news, as this area of the Hockey has been investigated heavily. In 1922, rule 56 was introduced into the National Hockey League which was supposed to regulate the fighting in the NHL and was called the official NHL rulebook(Wikipedia). Still today we have fighting in the National Hockey league even with rule 56 strictly enforced. It s not just the fighting that s the problem anymore, it s the concussions and other side effects/injuries from it. Players are suffering far greater head trauma each time they get in a fight which further on in life leads to multiple health problems. If fighting were to be banned in the NHL, would it still be the same? Some may say yes, but others speculate no. For now, fans don t see any changes coming soon so why not enjoy it better yet play it. • 15. Questions on Economics, the Recession, and the Federal... Part 8 A recession is typically defined as at least two consecutive quarters of economic decline in GDP. When this happens, unemployment tends to rise, personal income may drop, and the price of goods and services become volatile. Most agree that it is impossible to eliminate recession in a capitalistic economy, since it is so cyclic. Recessions may trim weak business and allow stronger ones to survive by employing techniques that improve quality and service. Recession does not mean depression; it simply means that there are peaks and valleys within the overall economic system. Now that economies are more global though, these dips have a far more reaching set of consequences. In most firms, however, recession may result in some lay offs, but it also may mean greater attention to sustainability, cost cutting, and a more lean and strategic approach to the individual product or service (Moffatt, 2009). Part 9 The Federal Reserve System was created in 1913 to act as the central bank of the United States and to oversee the nation s monetary policy, regulate banking, and make financial systems stable. Over the past two years, though, the Fed has faced serious challenges as it responded to severe recessionary times. The second criterion, or intrusive recollection, includes symptoms that are distinctive and easily identified of PTSD. These emotions manifest in daytime fantasies, traumatic nightmares, and psychotic reenactments know as flashbacks. The third criteria, avoidant/numbing, consists of symptoms that reflect behavioral, cognitive, or emotional strategies the PTSD patients use in an attempt to reduce the likelihood that they will expose themselves to trauma related stimuli. The fourth criteria, hyper arousal, most closely resembles those seen in panic and generalized anxiety disorders. While symptoms such as insomnia and irritability are generic anxiety symptoms, hyper vigilance and startle are more characteristic of PTSD. The fifth criteria, duration, specifies how long symptoms must persist in order to qualify for a PTSD diagnosis. What are some benefits of drilling in ANWR? Unemployment is currently at an all time high. Essentially, it was an attempt to impose tighter controls on the financial reporting, to try and provide more transparency in financial reporting, and to hold people accountable in the financial reporting. • 26. Gilgamesh As An Existential Hero Incredibly, one of the first recorded written works has much in common with one of the most modern philosophical movements. Though the Epic of Gilgamesh was written from oral narration centuries before the philosophy of existentialism was developed, the epic encompasses many of the main ideas of Sartrean existentialism. Jean Paul Sartre developed existentialism as a characterization of the human condition, and the movement that followed his ideas formed distinct literary tropes. Among these is the existential hero, and in this case, the failed existential hero. Initially, Gilgamesh shows development, becoming more important on a universal scale by becoming essential . However, Gilgamesh, when faced with the fact of his own mortality, fails to accept it and is crippled by his own existential dread. Though Gilgamesh elevates himself to a human living with essence, in the existential view, he is unable to overcome the questions of mortality that plague him in the aftermath of tragedy. Existentialism was a philosophic and literary movement that peaked in popularity in the mid 1900 s. First expounded by Sartre, the movement was initially a description of humanity, and attempted to define what it meant to be human. In defining this, existentialism addressed questions about human mortality, and the significance of life. In its most basic sense, absurdity addresses the meaninglessness of life, with special attention directed to divine disavowal. Jared White utilizes Absurdism to highlight the thoughts and meanings that go from individuality to the community. Absurdism is defined as the philosophy that humans live in essential isolation in an irrational and meaningless world. White says that when people realize their time has almost no value in the large scale, they give it up to the remainder of the world. He also claims that despite of the humans absurd settings, personal gains are favored. White makes clear that, taken literally, the plague of rats is an epidemic, but, symbolically, the plague of humans is a pandemic. The smaller outbreak only parallels the massive disease that people are infected with. White also argues that The Plague is in part a historical allegory, in which the plague signifies the German occupation of France from 1940 to 1944 during World War II. In a deft narrative act, Camus allegorically uses the plague to consider not only his personal situation sick, exiled, and restricted but also the European conflict.
