3. Research
• One of the strengths of my research is that I’ve used a range of different screenshots of
different products to get a better idea of the professional layout of fanzines and how I should
best lay out my product. This research also gives me a better idea of what existing products
look like and what I need to do too make my product different and stand out more to make it
look as visually appealing as possible as well as catching the audiences attention as best as it
can from first. I think another strength of my research is that I’ve looked at 3 completely
different fanzines instead of looking at 3 fanzines that are very similar. This research helped
me to make a product that is appealing to a much wider range of people instead of a specific
audience helping to increase the chances of people buying my product.
• One of the weaknesses of my product is that I didn’t put as much information into my
research as much as I could of. I think that this is a weakness because it means that I could of
missed important information that would of effected the outcome of my work which I would
of discovered if I spent more time researching. If I spent more time researching then I could of
possibly found more interesting ideas as well as ideas that makes my product more visually
appealing to my target audience.
5. Planning
• One of the strengths of my planning is that I tested a range of interesting ideas that can turn a
very simple picture into something unique and interesting. This allows me to use a much wider
range of images in my product and meant that I could use photos that appealed to a larger
audience and that would help to make my magazine more unique and interesting. I think
another strength of my planning was that I talked about my first idea in a large amount of
detail, this meant that when it came to production I saved a large amount of time because I
didn’t have to use any of my production time to think of any ideas. However I think a
weakness of my planning was that I only made one idea, this meant that if my idea didn’t work
I would have to use the majority of my production time to think of a whole new idea which
would of made my final product much worse quality. My planning could have been better if I
planned more ideas in case my first idea doesn’t work and if I talked about my ideas in more
detail to save more time in production and so that I could of made much higher quality work
as well as being able to make more pages to give my audience more information and content.
8. Time Management
• I managed my time well with certain aspects of my project. For example when doing my
planning I experimented with a range of different ideas to see how long it would take to make
similar products like them when it came to my production so that I didn’t use too much of my
production time on just one page. However I didn’t manage my time well for my production
diary meaning that I had to complete the majority of it in my spare time and only because of
this I was able to finish my project on time although if I had more time I would be able to
make a much better quality product as well as a many more pages for my product increasing
the amount of content my product has for my target audience.
• If I had more time I would of made more pages for my product to give my target audience
more content like I stated before and I would of use more of my production time to get more
photos as well as higher quality photos so that I could have a wider verity of photos in my
product.
10. Technical Qualities - camera
-My product has quite a dark color scheme which helps to make my title stand out and makes the audience notice the title before anything else
on the page. This helps to tell the audience what my fanzine is talking about before they even open the first page. However the existing product
has a much brighter color scheme, on the existing product the first thing that I look at is the sun glare and the quality of the picture however the
second thing I notice is the text. On my product I have used a range of different images of different locations to make my cover appeal to a range
of different people because people prefer certain types of photography in certain locations so having more pictures will make my product get the
attention of more people.
-The existing product has
used a small amount of
information to tell their
audience where they could
go to get some more
information about their
subject and to tell their
audience what their fanzine
is about. Whereas my
product doesn’t have any
information except from the
title. This could be both a
good thing and a bad thing
because some of my
audience would prefer a
fanzine that is straight to the
point however other parts of
my audience would much
rather have more
information.
-For my product I have made my own background by making a kaleidoscope type of pattern using one of my
images to make my product more unique and to also make it more interesting because it adds a wider verity of
images to my product to make sure my product doesn’t seem repetitive. Whereas the existing product has used
a basic image as its background which might look more appealing to people who like a simple design whereas
my design might appeal more to people who like something different and more complex.
12. Technical Qualities – editing/post
• My product and the existing product on this page are very similar in design and purpose. Both products are made to
give the audience something visual to look at instead of some sort of information that they have to read. We have also
both put a mixture of images so that the audience has a wider selection of things to look at instead of having to look at
3 images that are all similar which would be much less interesting.
• Both my product and the existing product have been giving a design and color scheme that matches the tone/mood of
the rest of the fanzine to keep that idea of repetition to make the product more visually appealing which is created from
the symmetry. We have also put our images on a slant to make the page more interesting and to give it a type of
modern look. However my fanzine talks a lot about photo illusion and editing meaning that this design also matches the
topic of my fanzine.
• One thing that I did do differently was adding a slogan saying “Give it a Shot” I did this to give my target the feeling of
encouragement to make them feel more positive. This would possibly make them like my product more or would make
them to more likely to remember my product if they just had a quick look through the pages.
• For my images I first put them into Adobe Lightroom to make them look more appealing by changing the brightness,
vibrance, color balance, etc. I did this to make certain colors stand out more then others to make my images look more
professional and better quality to increase the chances of people buying my product. For example on the grass on the
image on my product below I edited the image to make the grass a darker shade to match the bold/dark color tone of
the fanzine however when doing this it also made the grass stand out more and caused the image to be much better
quality. This is why I made sure to make this image take up the most room on the page because I wanted it to be the
first image that my audience would see since it was the best quality out of all the other images I had used.
13. Aesthetic Qualities
I personally feel that my work is good quality. I think this because throughout the whole of my fanzine there is a constant
color scheme that all matches helping to keep consistency and make my fanzine more appealing. This is because my target
audience prefers to have some sort of consistency on each page weather this be the same text layout, same style of pictures
or the same color scheme/pattern. I also feel that I used a range of different creative ideas throughout my fanzine to make
it more unique as well as to keep the audience interested. I did this by first making an illusion where a road is coming out of
a picture frame hung up on the wall and when I made a double page spread where the background was made out of 5
kaleidoscopes that are all made from the same image but have all been edited differently to make a different type of
pattern and style. To make sure that this page matched the rest of my magazine I added yellow lines to separate each
different pattern so that the page still matched the black and yellow color scheme throughout my fanzine.
However I think I could improve my product if I did some sort of kaleidoscope pattern on each page to give my fanzine some
sort of unique feature so that whenever my audience sees a fanzine with that type of style throughout it they will
immediately know that it has been created by my brand.
15. Audience Appeal
I have appealed to my
target audience when
making this product
because I have made sure
there is an equal amount
of room for information
and photos to help
balance the picture and
text ratio. This is
important because my
audience doesn’t like a lot
of information and prefers
information that goes
straight to the point while
also having at least one
image to give the
audience some sort of
visual representation of
what I’m talking about.
