Research
Strengths:
• I was able to view existing products that are currently on the market for my target
audience. I have added an existing product on slide 16. This is 'Empire Film Magazine'. The
reason why I have chosen this is because I like watching 'Superhero' movies/tv shows and
they have a lot of action in them. I like the multitude of images, and it depicts the main
character from that movie. The colours connect to the movie by the character's outfit. They
have chosen those types of colours because they want to make it eye-catching towards the
audience point of view.
• When viewing the existing products in the marketplace, I could observe that there are none
which cover the Sci-Fi aspect that my product does. Therefore, my product will be able to
focus on this niche market for my target audience, as it is not currently being covered by
my competitors.
• When I was gathering data with the issue and completion of my surveys and
questionnaires, I was able to gather quantitative and qualitative information on which I can
base by decisions for research on. This allowed me to gauge the market and in turn create
my product which is bespoke to them and their requirements.
• I was able to view how established and well respected companies, who are already
successful in the market produce their 'double page spreads'. This provided me with
visual ideas for my product such as the use of colours, fonts and multitudes of imagery,
specifically where to position them and use them to their best advantage for visual
appearance and effect.
• Through my research of existing products, I observed that they maintained a consistent
internal margin, and in addition to this they pay attention to the 'Kerning' (the adjustment
of space between two unique letters). They us the same font, colour tones on both pages,
and all this helped me in designing my product because I was able to continue this theme
from established companies.
• Through research, I have learnt that existing companies have two design options. They
either go minimalist, whereby they favour white spaces, simple typography and quiet
photos, or they go maximalist where loud colours, big fonts and eye-catching headlines
reign.
• Minimalist- (The description on the 'Double Page Spread' of my product).
• Maximalist- (The header on the 'Double Page Spread' of my magazine).
• I have made the description small on my double page spread so that the audience can read
a lot of information about a movie. I have made the header big for my double page
spread so that it's eye-catching, towards the audience's perspective.
• Looking through my 'Research' document, I have changed some slides by adding an old
'Double Page Spread' magazine from the 1940's, I have talked about what significant colour
they use in that product which was based on an art deco design depicting a train. This
imagery helped me with my 'retro' design and feel that I am after for my product. The text
talked about the slogan and what it represents, namely positivity and a time of happiness
and contentment. This is something that I can bring to my product in order to make it
appealing to my target audience. The reason why I have included a 1940's 'Double Page
Spread' is because I wanted to use it as a similar existing product for my 'Film
Magazine'. The parts of this older magazine that I took for inspiration into my product was
the positivity and inspiration, and especially the bold striking colours and images which
make this product desirable to the reader. Afterall this is what I am wishing to create for
my readers, by providing them with a product that they will not be able to put down and will
want to read from cover to cover with glee.
Research
• If the research takes too long to complete, then the data acquired will
become out of date, and no longer useful for my product. Therefore, my
research was done efficiently and quickly to ensure that the data
collected was still up to date and tangible for my needs.
• When viewing other established magazine products, there is a risk that
my product will simply mirror theirs, and this is not what I would have
wanted to achieve for my target audience. My product would therefore
not be fresh to the market, but importantly will run the risk of plagiarism.
I avoided this by ensuring that mine was unique and fresh to the market,
thus avoiding this potential pitfall.
• Surveys and questionnaires can sometimes lack depth as they are
standardised. Therefore, it can be difficult to ask anything other than
general questions that a broad range of people will understand. Poor
understanding and completion will seriously affect my research stage for
my product. This was avoided as I made the questions jargon free and
easy to understand as to avoid any ambiguities.
Weaknesses:
Research
• During my research with my target audience via my surveys and
questionnaires, there was a split decision on whether my winning
product advertised on the front cover should be a 'DVD' or 'Pop
Vinyl'. This can deter potential readers from purchasing my product
if the wrong 'give away' is chosen by me on my product.
• There was a split decision whether or not I should include a primary
audience, secondary audience, or even both for the audience profile
of my 'Research' document. The reason why I thought to add a
primary and secondary audience is because I wanted to specify to
the audience, what type of product my film magazine would be, by
the age range of my product. All this made it problematic to focus
on one audience profile.
Weaknesses:
Planning
Strengths:
• Through detailed research and gauging the opinions of the target audience through surveys
and questionnaires, I was then able to plan for my product from the data provided. This will
involve the process of 'flat planning' which is a representation of the whole publication of me
knowing of what goes where in my product. I have added a mood board and a mind map,
and I have talked about where each item on a 'Front Cover and a 'Double Page Spread of a
film magazine will go for my product. This helped me creating my product in Photoshop as I
could specifically use the tools for creating shapes, importing images, using the magic tool
for cropping and the vast palette of colours in the colour bucket option. All this allowed me
to create a product which was visually appealing both quickly and efficiently.
• Successful planning ensured that mistakes were not made. However, if they were they
could be easily remedied to solve them, as opposed to 'firefighting' them, which would have
had a negative impact on the quality of my product.
• Using simple systems as to not over complicate the design and content for my product
during the planning stage will ensure a smooth process for the publication.
• Detailed planning of my product will establish a running order, ensuring effective time
management. On the Pre-Production document, I have added a table, talking about the plan
of action and the resources required. I have made sure that I managed my time well by
creating a table and talking about what I'm going to be doing for each week of creating my
product. I have made sure that I am fully equipped with the resources that I need to create
my product, by using the Photoshop Software. I will also link back to my questionnaires on
'SurveyMonkey' from my schedule sheet.
Planning
• Whilst I am planning my product, the market can suddenly change, or people's
perceptions can alter considerably. This means that I would have to revisit the
research and planning stages again, therefore encountering further time and
further costs to resources.
• During the planning stages it can be very easy to over think the idea by trying to
make it more complicated that it needs to be for the target audience.
• The costs of planning for my product may spiral, this means that it would not be
cost effective. Examples of this could include Hardware (Equipment) and
Software.
• I have looked back at my 'Proposal' document, and I have changed some ideas
that I have added in the word document for any potential improvements that can
be made. I have changed the colours that I will be adding for my product in order
to make it more striking and dramatic. It was not easy finding the colours that
would best fit my magazine, as I did not want to copy established magazine ideas.
Weaknesses:
Time
Management
Time Management
The software tools that I used was Photoshop. This initially increased the
time for me in creating my product as I was inexperienced in using this
software.
At the beginning I thought that this was hindering me and that it was time
consuming. However, as I became more competent with it, I was able to
experiment with this Software in order to become more diverse and creative
with my design.
The consequences of poor time management for my product are:
• Loss in productivity
• Increased costs in my creating my product
• Delay in production
• The risk of my competitors getting the 'jump' on stories and releases
During my pre-production stage, I decided upon the colours, fonts and
images by using Photoshop software in the design of my product.
Therefore, what my ideas that I thought were set in stone, suddenly changed and I
believe that these changes in design, colours, fonts and images, together with
images have made my product all the better.
So, did I manage my time well? Yes, I did because as I became more confident
and creative with Photoshop software, I decided to revisit my pre-production stage
in order to make slight adjustments. This make my product all the better as I had
more than sufficient time to make these amendments.
On the whole, everything went well that I had planned during my research and
planning stages, which I could then take forward to my implementation of my
product.
So, in conclusion by managing my time well I was able to make these adjustments
without detriment to my product
Technical
Qualities
Technical Qualities- Front Cover
My product is titled 'Future Film' and it is shown here
next to a similar publication from a well-established
company called 'Empire'.
There are similarities to it, as I have used 'Empire' for
reference only, as I wanted my product to be unique
and fresh to the marketplace. Therefore, my product
has accomplished the freshness and uniqueness
which was my desired outcome during my research
and planning development stages.
The major obstacle that I had to overcome was using
Photoshop Software for the first time.
Once these initial difficulties had been remedied, I
was able to edit the images for the correct exposure,
colour balance, crop, sharpen and straighten them, as
well as being able to combine multiple images into a
new scene.
This was essential software for me to use in creating
my front cover. I have arranged the images by using
the select tool on 'Photoshop' and positioning them in
the middle of the 'Front Cover', the reason being that I
wanted to make my product noticeable.
Technical Qualities- Double Page Spread
I used 'Film' Magazine for reference for my double page
spread, and I studied my competitor's magazine for
research purposes. There are similarities, but I have
made mine more visually appealing to the reader.
In the 'Film' Magazine issue, the black background with
white writing will tend to bleed into the background and
will cause the text to blur for the reader of the
article. This can deter any potential readers from
purchasing this and future issues.
After resolving the initial Photoshop Software problems
that I had with my Front Cover, I was able to experiment
more with my Double Page Spread.
When using this software, I could choose an image of the
main character and alter it to my desired effect, so that it
was the striking and dramatic image that I wanted. I
was also able to merge images and display these in a
white border surrounded by bat symbols. In addition to
this I was able to blend a background that was black and
brown which contrasted and continued the sense of
mystery and suspense which was my desired effect
during my research and planning stages.
Without Photoshop Software I would not have been able
to achieve the desired results that I was after, by
designing and producing my product, which was visually
stimulating to the reader.
I have chosen a red colour for the 'Double Page Spread' of
my product because red represents evil, anger. I have
chosen this colour because it links to 'The Batman'
movie, the superhero represents anger.
Aesthetic
Qualities
Aesthetic Qualities
Front Cover
The image opposite is the finished front cover for my product.
When conducting my initial plans and research for my product, I
viewed 'Empire' and 'Total Film' magazines. I noticed in both
publications that they had the same characteristics when they came
to use colour and glossy effect.
During my initial plans I decided instead of making my magazine fit
the stereotypical design. I would create a magazine that was fresh
unique and would have a matt appearance with a 1980's retro feel.
Nostalgia for this period is like comfort food, as it transports us back
to simpler and happier places and times and gives us comfort and
stability.
Comparison:
 There are 5 colours for both products.
 The designs are spaced out, like the character designs and the
text.
 Both are Superhero magazines.
Instead of hiding my Masthead behind the cover image(s) such as 'Empire' and 'Total Film'
Magazines do, I decided from the outset that I wanted mine to be bold text and clearly visible.
I designed my front cover not to be cluttered or clumsy like other magazines, but instead for the
eyes of the reader to follow the design of the magazine on the front cover in a flowing motion.
I found the high quality images that I wanted to use on 'Shuttershock', as I did not have to
worry about any copyright issues or infringements.
I used Photoshop as my primary software so that I could create bold colours and fonts, using
attractive imagery, in order to address the genre of my product, therefore making it fresh,
unique and aesthetically pleasing and interesting to the marketplace and my audience.
Aesthetic Qualities
Double Page Spread
The image above is the finished double page spread for my
product.
When researching other products for comparisons, I found
the images and text on the double page spreads of the
products of existing companies to be overloaded, which
distracted me from the article.
I wanted my product to flow and be visually appealing to my target
audience. The images that I chose were from 'Shuttershock' and I
edited these together with the colours, fonts and texts with the
Photoshop software.
From the outset I have always wanted my product to be visually
appealing to my target audience.
I found other magazine articles used a black background with white
text on their double page spreads, and this can lead to eye fatigue for
the reader of the article, meaning that they may not finish reading the
article or even stop purchasing the product in the future due to this
issue. In contrast to this, I have blended the colours for my product so
that it gave me the dramatic effect that I wanted to create for the genre
of my double page spread.
By being imaginative with the design of my product, I was able to
experiment with different colours, fonts and imagery on Photoshop
software by re-examining my initial plans, research and pre-production
stages.
Audience
Appeal
Audience Appeal- Planning
How have you appealed to your target audience?
The specific area that will appeal to my target audience is the uniqueness of my
product. Through the research and planning stages I ensured that my product did not
follow the same design principles of existing products already on the market.
The other areas that my product will appeal to my target audience is by the following:
• Age Range
(12-25) Primary Audience
(25-50) Secondary Audience
My product will have no inappropriate pictures or swearing in it. It will have action
images which are suitable for ages 12+. In addition to this, it is also suitable for 25-50
year olds because they will enjoy reading the content and reviews within my product,
especially the double page spread.
• Gender
(Male – Primary)
(Female- Secondary)
My product will interest males and females alike due to the many male and
female Super-Hero characters in the industry today being displayed in DC
and Marvel, to name just two examples.
The market is predominately male orientated, but I have designed my
product to address this, meaning that it will be gender neutral, and therefore
be interesting and innovative to both genders.
• Psychographic
(Belongers – Primary)
(Emulators – Secondary)
My product will be aimed at the mainstream cinema and Super-Heroes that
are popular.
My price will be ÂŁ1.50 per month, so this will attract teenagers that have
spending money.
• Social Status
(Children/Teenagers/Adults/Families)
My product will interest all ages ranges due to its design and content.
Audience Appeal-
Profile
How have you appealed to your target audience?
Through the feedback that I received from the people surveyed, I was able to provide
what they wanted to be included and excluded in my super-hero magazine.
The people who were surveyed watched sci-fi movies and series as well as other
similar genres to the product that I was designing. This indicates that they would be
interested with a new, fresh, innovative film magazine which is unique and visually
appealing to all genders, as the sci-fi and super-hero market is no longer male
dominated.
By conducting surveys and interviews, I have appealed to my target audience by
providing what they wanted from the feedback that I received from them. Afterall, the
key to success is to give my customers what they want.
This changed my initial concept of originally creating a super-hero publication, but
feedback dictates that I provide what they want, and this is sci-fi and super-heroes'
publication.
As both genres are closely linked, this will not cause any issues or problems in the
implementation of the product by either time, resources, design or expenditure.
Audience
Theory
Audience Theory
The definition of audience theory offers explanations on how people encounter
media, how they use it, and how it affects them.
Using the information into my model of interviews and questionnaires with the
feedback from my audience, the particular audience theory lends itself to the
following conclusions from the responses that I received by the following:
• The people questioned wanted to read film magazines, and like action and sci-fi
movies and wanted these genres of images on the front cover of my
product. This gives them an idea of what is coming out soon, and they can read
reviews on current trending films, as either an interest to them or merely as a
topic of social discussion.
• They liked the idea of having a chance to win a product which was clearly
advertised on the front cover of my product. Especially as it is associated with
films.
• The people advised that they like to read interviews with the cast and
directors of the movies, so that they can get an insiders prospective and
exclusive knowledge, especially behind the scenes and also information
about production and filming.
• For those who also wanted sci-fi to be included, they said that they chose this
for escapism of narrative not based on our planet.
• My double page spread for my product must have reviews and interviews in it,
as this is what my audience expects and wants. The feedback received was
that they know what the film is about regardless of whether they saw it or not.
• They want my front cover to continue the theme of the character(s) in the
centre with a 'catchy' slogan. But the feedback added that they would like
reviews and information on the Oscars also. This is something that can
easily be included in future issues.
• They like the Super-Heroes to be strong and heroic.
How do people encounter media?
They encounter it in a variety of ways from television, adverts, the internet, social media in a
multi-function ways : Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, advertisements and magazines and
journals.
My product will be advertised eventually on these media forums for maximum exposure of
my product.
How do they use it?
They use it for a hobby, topics of social discussions, having an interest in fiction and
escapism.
I have designed my product especially for this purpose so that all interests will be catered for.
How it affects them
The genre of these films gets people 'hooked' for follow ups or when the next series is going to
be released. It creates a fantasy for them in order for them to escape the reality for a while and
tone down the stress in their lives.
I want to get my target audience hooked on my product, so that they will be compelled to
purchase and read it on a monthly basis.
Peer Feedback
Feedback 1
What did you like about the product?
The things that I like about the poster is the background
because it looks really good, and I also like the way that the
front cover is spread out.
I also like about that the double page spread is the black and
red background I think that it works really well. I also like the
nice big title.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The things that could have been improved is the text on the
double page spread, it could have done with being a little bit
bigger other that I think that it is really good.
Feedback 2
What did you like about the product?
I like the colours that were used, they are very eye-
catching. The double paged spread has a lot
of information and a few screenshots for the
Batman, which could be interesting to read.
What improvements could have been made
to the product?
You could try changing the font colours a bit, since they can
be quite hard to read due to how they can blend into the
background. You could also try make the images a bit
bigger.
Feedback 3
What did you like about the product?
I personally like the double spread because the colour
scheme really fits well with batman, because he's a dark
character. And the front cover is also pretty
good since the space theme is pretty eye catching.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
I think the double spread is honestly good enough, but
the front cover could maybe be improved like making the
text stand out a bit more and changing the red banners a
bit darker.
Peer Feedback
Summary
Peer Feedback Summary
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with the feedback that I have received as the majority of it was
positive, with only minor alterations being needed. The
feedback advised that the colour scheme and front cover were eye-
catching, and the use of space worked well, and on the whole my survey
participants liked my double page spread, and that the colours and fonts
were eye-catching. They advised also that there was a lot of
information and screenshots which would make it interesting to
read. The front cover was also mentioned as eye catching, as this is
exactly what I wanted to create, as I am competing with existing and
well established Film Magazines.
This is a positive first step for my magazine, as the preliminary feedback
on the whole is positive, as the people who I surveyed liked my
magazine, which proved it to be fresh and unique to the marketplace,
and this is exactly what I wanted it to be during my preliminary planning
and design stages.
Peer Feedback Summary
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I do not disagree with anything from the feedback that I received. The
reason for this is that it was all constructive feedback that I
received. I will listen to my potential audience and to take on board
these changes and make the appropriate minor amendments that I need
to make.
• They are only small alterations that would need to be made by way of the
double page spread being a litter bigger, and colours to be amended as
some found them hard to read, and others wanted the text and images a
little bigger, both on the front cover and within the magazine
itself. These are changes that can be easily made for my potential
audiences needs and enjoyment of reading my publication.
• All the necessary alterations and amendments can be achieved through
future design and planning processes and by using Photoshop Software.
Peer Feedback Summary
Constructive Feedback
The areas for improvement are:
 Making the 'Double Page
Spread' text and images
larger.
 Changing the banners of
my product so they are a
darker colour.
 The ‘Front Cover’ of my
magazine, the text needs
to stand out more.
 Changing the font, colours
and images larger as to
make them easier to
read.
Positive Feedback
The people questioned liked the
Double Page Spread for the
following reasons:
• on how it was laid out.
• the black and red
background.
• the title was 'nice and
big'.
• there was a lot of
information in it.
• the screenshots.
• interesting to read.
• the colour scheme fits
the theme.

7. Evaluation (FMP) (1).pptx

  • 3. Research Strengths: • I was able to view existing products that are currently on the market for my target audience. I have added an existing product on slide 16. This is 'Empire Film Magazine'. The reason why I have chosen this is because I like watching 'Superhero' movies/tv shows and they have a lot of action in them. I like the multitude of images, and it depicts the main character from that movie. The colours connect to the movie by the character's outfit. They have chosen those types of colours because they want to make it eye-catching towards the audience point of view. • When viewing the existing products in the marketplace, I could observe that there are none which cover the Sci-Fi aspect that my product does. Therefore, my product will be able to focus on this niche market for my target audience, as it is not currently being covered by my competitors. • When I was gathering data with the issue and completion of my surveys and questionnaires, I was able to gather quantitative and qualitative information on which I can base by decisions for research on. This allowed me to gauge the market and in turn create my product which is bespoke to them and their requirements. • I was able to view how established and well respected companies, who are already successful in the market produce their 'double page spreads'. This provided me with visual ideas for my product such as the use of colours, fonts and multitudes of imagery, specifically where to position them and use them to their best advantage for visual appearance and effect.
  • 4. • Through my research of existing products, I observed that they maintained a consistent internal margin, and in addition to this they pay attention to the 'Kerning' (the adjustment of space between two unique letters). They us the same font, colour tones on both pages, and all this helped me in designing my product because I was able to continue this theme from established companies. • Through research, I have learnt that existing companies have two design options. They either go minimalist, whereby they favour white spaces, simple typography and quiet photos, or they go maximalist where loud colours, big fonts and eye-catching headlines reign. • Minimalist- (The description on the 'Double Page Spread' of my product). • Maximalist- (The header on the 'Double Page Spread' of my magazine). • I have made the description small on my double page spread so that the audience can read a lot of information about a movie. I have made the header big for my double page spread so that it's eye-catching, towards the audience's perspective. • Looking through my 'Research' document, I have changed some slides by adding an old 'Double Page Spread' magazine from the 1940's, I have talked about what significant colour they use in that product which was based on an art deco design depicting a train. This imagery helped me with my 'retro' design and feel that I am after for my product. The text talked about the slogan and what it represents, namely positivity and a time of happiness and contentment. This is something that I can bring to my product in order to make it appealing to my target audience. The reason why I have included a 1940's 'Double Page Spread' is because I wanted to use it as a similar existing product for my 'Film Magazine'. The parts of this older magazine that I took for inspiration into my product was the positivity and inspiration, and especially the bold striking colours and images which make this product desirable to the reader. Afterall this is what I am wishing to create for my readers, by providing them with a product that they will not be able to put down and will want to read from cover to cover with glee.
  • 5. Research • If the research takes too long to complete, then the data acquired will become out of date, and no longer useful for my product. Therefore, my research was done efficiently and quickly to ensure that the data collected was still up to date and tangible for my needs. • When viewing other established magazine products, there is a risk that my product will simply mirror theirs, and this is not what I would have wanted to achieve for my target audience. My product would therefore not be fresh to the market, but importantly will run the risk of plagiarism. I avoided this by ensuring that mine was unique and fresh to the market, thus avoiding this potential pitfall. • Surveys and questionnaires can sometimes lack depth as they are standardised. Therefore, it can be difficult to ask anything other than general questions that a broad range of people will understand. Poor understanding and completion will seriously affect my research stage for my product. This was avoided as I made the questions jargon free and easy to understand as to avoid any ambiguities. Weaknesses:
  • 6. Research • During my research with my target audience via my surveys and questionnaires, there was a split decision on whether my winning product advertised on the front cover should be a 'DVD' or 'Pop Vinyl'. This can deter potential readers from purchasing my product if the wrong 'give away' is chosen by me on my product. • There was a split decision whether or not I should include a primary audience, secondary audience, or even both for the audience profile of my 'Research' document. The reason why I thought to add a primary and secondary audience is because I wanted to specify to the audience, what type of product my film magazine would be, by the age range of my product. All this made it problematic to focus on one audience profile. Weaknesses:
  • 7. Planning Strengths: • Through detailed research and gauging the opinions of the target audience through surveys and questionnaires, I was then able to plan for my product from the data provided. This will involve the process of 'flat planning' which is a representation of the whole publication of me knowing of what goes where in my product. I have added a mood board and a mind map, and I have talked about where each item on a 'Front Cover and a 'Double Page Spread of a film magazine will go for my product. This helped me creating my product in Photoshop as I could specifically use the tools for creating shapes, importing images, using the magic tool for cropping and the vast palette of colours in the colour bucket option. All this allowed me to create a product which was visually appealing both quickly and efficiently. • Successful planning ensured that mistakes were not made. However, if they were they could be easily remedied to solve them, as opposed to 'firefighting' them, which would have had a negative impact on the quality of my product. • Using simple systems as to not over complicate the design and content for my product during the planning stage will ensure a smooth process for the publication. • Detailed planning of my product will establish a running order, ensuring effective time management. On the Pre-Production document, I have added a table, talking about the plan of action and the resources required. I have made sure that I managed my time well by creating a table and talking about what I'm going to be doing for each week of creating my product. I have made sure that I am fully equipped with the resources that I need to create my product, by using the Photoshop Software. I will also link back to my questionnaires on 'SurveyMonkey' from my schedule sheet.
  • 8. Planning • Whilst I am planning my product, the market can suddenly change, or people's perceptions can alter considerably. This means that I would have to revisit the research and planning stages again, therefore encountering further time and further costs to resources. • During the planning stages it can be very easy to over think the idea by trying to make it more complicated that it needs to be for the target audience. • The costs of planning for my product may spiral, this means that it would not be cost effective. Examples of this could include Hardware (Equipment) and Software. • I have looked back at my 'Proposal' document, and I have changed some ideas that I have added in the word document for any potential improvements that can be made. I have changed the colours that I will be adding for my product in order to make it more striking and dramatic. It was not easy finding the colours that would best fit my magazine, as I did not want to copy established magazine ideas. Weaknesses:
  • 10. Time Management The software tools that I used was Photoshop. This initially increased the time for me in creating my product as I was inexperienced in using this software. At the beginning I thought that this was hindering me and that it was time consuming. However, as I became more competent with it, I was able to experiment with this Software in order to become more diverse and creative with my design. The consequences of poor time management for my product are: • Loss in productivity • Increased costs in my creating my product • Delay in production • The risk of my competitors getting the 'jump' on stories and releases During my pre-production stage, I decided upon the colours, fonts and images by using Photoshop software in the design of my product.
  • 11. Therefore, what my ideas that I thought were set in stone, suddenly changed and I believe that these changes in design, colours, fonts and images, together with images have made my product all the better. So, did I manage my time well? Yes, I did because as I became more confident and creative with Photoshop software, I decided to revisit my pre-production stage in order to make slight adjustments. This make my product all the better as I had more than sufficient time to make these amendments. On the whole, everything went well that I had planned during my research and planning stages, which I could then take forward to my implementation of my product. So, in conclusion by managing my time well I was able to make these adjustments without detriment to my product
  • 13. Technical Qualities- Front Cover My product is titled 'Future Film' and it is shown here next to a similar publication from a well-established company called 'Empire'. There are similarities to it, as I have used 'Empire' for reference only, as I wanted my product to be unique and fresh to the marketplace. Therefore, my product has accomplished the freshness and uniqueness which was my desired outcome during my research and planning development stages. The major obstacle that I had to overcome was using Photoshop Software for the first time. Once these initial difficulties had been remedied, I was able to edit the images for the correct exposure, colour balance, crop, sharpen and straighten them, as well as being able to combine multiple images into a new scene. This was essential software for me to use in creating my front cover. I have arranged the images by using the select tool on 'Photoshop' and positioning them in the middle of the 'Front Cover', the reason being that I wanted to make my product noticeable.
  • 14. Technical Qualities- Double Page Spread I used 'Film' Magazine for reference for my double page spread, and I studied my competitor's magazine for research purposes. There are similarities, but I have made mine more visually appealing to the reader. In the 'Film' Magazine issue, the black background with white writing will tend to bleed into the background and will cause the text to blur for the reader of the article. This can deter any potential readers from purchasing this and future issues. After resolving the initial Photoshop Software problems that I had with my Front Cover, I was able to experiment more with my Double Page Spread. When using this software, I could choose an image of the main character and alter it to my desired effect, so that it was the striking and dramatic image that I wanted. I was also able to merge images and display these in a white border surrounded by bat symbols. In addition to this I was able to blend a background that was black and brown which contrasted and continued the sense of mystery and suspense which was my desired effect during my research and planning stages. Without Photoshop Software I would not have been able to achieve the desired results that I was after, by designing and producing my product, which was visually stimulating to the reader. I have chosen a red colour for the 'Double Page Spread' of my product because red represents evil, anger. I have chosen this colour because it links to 'The Batman' movie, the superhero represents anger.
  • 16. Aesthetic Qualities Front Cover The image opposite is the finished front cover for my product. When conducting my initial plans and research for my product, I viewed 'Empire' and 'Total Film' magazines. I noticed in both publications that they had the same characteristics when they came to use colour and glossy effect. During my initial plans I decided instead of making my magazine fit the stereotypical design. I would create a magazine that was fresh unique and would have a matt appearance with a 1980's retro feel. Nostalgia for this period is like comfort food, as it transports us back to simpler and happier places and times and gives us comfort and stability. Comparison:  There are 5 colours for both products.  The designs are spaced out, like the character designs and the text.  Both are Superhero magazines.
  • 17. Instead of hiding my Masthead behind the cover image(s) such as 'Empire' and 'Total Film' Magazines do, I decided from the outset that I wanted mine to be bold text and clearly visible. I designed my front cover not to be cluttered or clumsy like other magazines, but instead for the eyes of the reader to follow the design of the magazine on the front cover in a flowing motion. I found the high quality images that I wanted to use on 'Shuttershock', as I did not have to worry about any copyright issues or infringements. I used Photoshop as my primary software so that I could create bold colours and fonts, using attractive imagery, in order to address the genre of my product, therefore making it fresh, unique and aesthetically pleasing and interesting to the marketplace and my audience.
  • 18. Aesthetic Qualities Double Page Spread The image above is the finished double page spread for my product. When researching other products for comparisons, I found the images and text on the double page spreads of the products of existing companies to be overloaded, which distracted me from the article.
  • 19. I wanted my product to flow and be visually appealing to my target audience. The images that I chose were from 'Shuttershock' and I edited these together with the colours, fonts and texts with the Photoshop software. From the outset I have always wanted my product to be visually appealing to my target audience. I found other magazine articles used a black background with white text on their double page spreads, and this can lead to eye fatigue for the reader of the article, meaning that they may not finish reading the article or even stop purchasing the product in the future due to this issue. In contrast to this, I have blended the colours for my product so that it gave me the dramatic effect that I wanted to create for the genre of my double page spread. By being imaginative with the design of my product, I was able to experiment with different colours, fonts and imagery on Photoshop software by re-examining my initial plans, research and pre-production stages.
  • 21. Audience Appeal- Planning How have you appealed to your target audience? The specific area that will appeal to my target audience is the uniqueness of my product. Through the research and planning stages I ensured that my product did not follow the same design principles of existing products already on the market. The other areas that my product will appeal to my target audience is by the following: • Age Range (12-25) Primary Audience (25-50) Secondary Audience My product will have no inappropriate pictures or swearing in it. It will have action images which are suitable for ages 12+. In addition to this, it is also suitable for 25-50 year olds because they will enjoy reading the content and reviews within my product, especially the double page spread.
  • 22. • Gender (Male – Primary) (Female- Secondary) My product will interest males and females alike due to the many male and female Super-Hero characters in the industry today being displayed in DC and Marvel, to name just two examples. The market is predominately male orientated, but I have designed my product to address this, meaning that it will be gender neutral, and therefore be interesting and innovative to both genders. • Psychographic (Belongers – Primary) (Emulators – Secondary) My product will be aimed at the mainstream cinema and Super-Heroes that are popular. My price will be ÂŁ1.50 per month, so this will attract teenagers that have spending money.
  • 23. • Social Status (Children/Teenagers/Adults/Families) My product will interest all ages ranges due to its design and content.
  • 24. Audience Appeal- Profile How have you appealed to your target audience? Through the feedback that I received from the people surveyed, I was able to provide what they wanted to be included and excluded in my super-hero magazine. The people who were surveyed watched sci-fi movies and series as well as other similar genres to the product that I was designing. This indicates that they would be interested with a new, fresh, innovative film magazine which is unique and visually appealing to all genders, as the sci-fi and super-hero market is no longer male dominated. By conducting surveys and interviews, I have appealed to my target audience by providing what they wanted from the feedback that I received from them. Afterall, the key to success is to give my customers what they want. This changed my initial concept of originally creating a super-hero publication, but feedback dictates that I provide what they want, and this is sci-fi and super-heroes' publication. As both genres are closely linked, this will not cause any issues or problems in the implementation of the product by either time, resources, design or expenditure.
  • 26. Audience Theory The definition of audience theory offers explanations on how people encounter media, how they use it, and how it affects them. Using the information into my model of interviews and questionnaires with the feedback from my audience, the particular audience theory lends itself to the following conclusions from the responses that I received by the following: • The people questioned wanted to read film magazines, and like action and sci-fi movies and wanted these genres of images on the front cover of my product. This gives them an idea of what is coming out soon, and they can read reviews on current trending films, as either an interest to them or merely as a topic of social discussion. • They liked the idea of having a chance to win a product which was clearly advertised on the front cover of my product. Especially as it is associated with films.
  • 27. • The people advised that they like to read interviews with the cast and directors of the movies, so that they can get an insiders prospective and exclusive knowledge, especially behind the scenes and also information about production and filming. • For those who also wanted sci-fi to be included, they said that they chose this for escapism of narrative not based on our planet. • My double page spread for my product must have reviews and interviews in it, as this is what my audience expects and wants. The feedback received was that they know what the film is about regardless of whether they saw it or not. • They want my front cover to continue the theme of the character(s) in the centre with a 'catchy' slogan. But the feedback added that they would like reviews and information on the Oscars also. This is something that can easily be included in future issues. • They like the Super-Heroes to be strong and heroic.
  • 28. How do people encounter media? They encounter it in a variety of ways from television, adverts, the internet, social media in a multi-function ways : Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, advertisements and magazines and journals. My product will be advertised eventually on these media forums for maximum exposure of my product. How do they use it? They use it for a hobby, topics of social discussions, having an interest in fiction and escapism. I have designed my product especially for this purpose so that all interests will be catered for. How it affects them The genre of these films gets people 'hooked' for follow ups or when the next series is going to be released. It creates a fantasy for them in order for them to escape the reality for a while and tone down the stress in their lives. I want to get my target audience hooked on my product, so that they will be compelled to purchase and read it on a monthly basis.
  • 30. Feedback 1 What did you like about the product? The things that I like about the poster is the background because it looks really good, and I also like the way that the front cover is spread out. I also like about that the double page spread is the black and red background I think that it works really well. I also like the nice big title. What improvements could have been made to the product? The things that could have been improved is the text on the double page spread, it could have done with being a little bit bigger other that I think that it is really good.
  • 31. Feedback 2 What did you like about the product? I like the colours that were used, they are very eye- catching. The double paged spread has a lot of information and a few screenshots for the Batman, which could be interesting to read. What improvements could have been made to the product? You could try changing the font colours a bit, since they can be quite hard to read due to how they can blend into the background. You could also try make the images a bit bigger.
  • 32. Feedback 3 What did you like about the product? I personally like the double spread because the colour scheme really fits well with batman, because he's a dark character. And the front cover is also pretty good since the space theme is pretty eye catching. What improvements could have been made to the product? I think the double spread is honestly good enough, but the front cover could maybe be improved like making the text stand out a bit more and changing the red banners a bit darker.
  • 34. Peer Feedback Summary What do you agree with from your peer feedback? I agree with the feedback that I have received as the majority of it was positive, with only minor alterations being needed. The feedback advised that the colour scheme and front cover were eye- catching, and the use of space worked well, and on the whole my survey participants liked my double page spread, and that the colours and fonts were eye-catching. They advised also that there was a lot of information and screenshots which would make it interesting to read. The front cover was also mentioned as eye catching, as this is exactly what I wanted to create, as I am competing with existing and well established Film Magazines. This is a positive first step for my magazine, as the preliminary feedback on the whole is positive, as the people who I surveyed liked my magazine, which proved it to be fresh and unique to the marketplace, and this is exactly what I wanted it to be during my preliminary planning and design stages.
  • 35. Peer Feedback Summary What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? • I do not disagree with anything from the feedback that I received. The reason for this is that it was all constructive feedback that I received. I will listen to my potential audience and to take on board these changes and make the appropriate minor amendments that I need to make. • They are only small alterations that would need to be made by way of the double page spread being a litter bigger, and colours to be amended as some found them hard to read, and others wanted the text and images a little bigger, both on the front cover and within the magazine itself. These are changes that can be easily made for my potential audiences needs and enjoyment of reading my publication. • All the necessary alterations and amendments can be achieved through future design and planning processes and by using Photoshop Software.
