This type of existing product has used a variety of different content to help make their product more interesting to their
target audience and to make their product more unique. This helps to make the product stand out more to their target
audience when around other competitors, the range of different artistic styles and designs on each page helps to keep the
audience interested because there is always something new and interesting for them to look at/read

Original Outcome
Idea 1
• For this idea I was thinking about writing about my own personal photography. I will talk about my favourite peace's of
photography that I have personally took and talk in detail about what equipment and settings I used when taking the
photo as well as any other methods that I used when taking the photo such as if I was laid down, on an angle, etc. After
I will show a modified picture of the image where I have used Photoshop to create a unique design and discuss how I
did it. At some points in my magazine I will also add some aspects where the audience can interact with my product by
giving them some sort of game to play like a decision tree where the audience makes certain choices to get an
interesting outcome.
• I will attempt to make a messy and artistic style/design for my fanzine to make my work look unusual and different.
This will hopefully make my fanzine more visually appealing and interesting however some pages of my magazine will
be purely just images so that my audience can focus on the images instead of any information. For the cover I will use
quite large font to make my fanzine stand out to my target audience, for inside my fanzine I will use a range of different
sized fonts because certain fonts are better suited for certain topics and for the back of my fanzine I will use a medium
sized font because I won’t have a large of information on the back. Overall throughout my whole fanzine I will have an
even photo and text ratio. I will also make sure to use a bright and vibrant colour scheme to help make my fanzine
stand out and look appealing to my target audience.
• For my Experiments on the pages above I used a range of different tools. For the first idea I used the brush tool on soft
round, add layer mask, polygonal lasso tool, paint bucket and clipping mask.
• For my second idea I used the blending options and deselected the colour red, the rectangular marquee tool and
mainly changed the layer to create this idea.

Make sure that all text that I
use from Dafont is 100% free
so that my product doesn’t
get sued for copyright.
My cover will be similar to this existing product below. On my cover I will have a very small amount of text, this will be the
masthead and the authors name. I will do this so that my target audience isn’t overwhelmed by information and so that my
fanzine looks more appealing to read. I will have a visually appealing and bold image in the centre of the cover to get the
audiences attention so that when the product is surrounded by other products it is easy to spot, I will also help this by
adding a border round my page so that the image isn’t ruined when the image goes over the page. Overall I will have 12
pages as you can see from the layout on the slide below showing how many pages I will have and what information will be
on what page. For the back page of my fanzine I will either have just pictures on the back and no text like one of the images
below or I will have a small amount of text and a plain background like the other image below however I have still not
decided. I think the one that is purely images is good because it helps to make the fanzine more visually appealing and
makes the audience more likely to like it because they are more attracted to images rather then lots of text however the
other idea of only having a small amount of text and a plain background is also good because it isn’t an overwhelming
amount of text and the small amount of text that I put on the back could be something catchy that sticks with the reader for
a long time or a question that interests the reader and makes them think about my fanzine for a long time while also
possibly talking to more people about my fanzine because of the strange but interesting question. I will also make a wide
variety of different styles and pages on each page to keep the audience interested and to make my fanzine more unique.

For my cover I will use very little information to make my fanzine seem more appealing to
my target audience because a large amount of information can often put people from my
target audience off and make the product unappealing. For my DPS I will use a smaller font
then the one you see in this image so that I can fit more information onto my pages
however I will still not use too much information because I want to make sure there is an
equal amount of text and images.
Production
schedule
1st week For the first week I will start producing ideas and thinking about what tools a equipment I will use to produce my
product. In the first week I will research my target audience. Looking at what color scheme would best suit them as
well as, what text and other designs are best suited for my certain target audience.
2nd week For the second week I will be planning the layout of my fanzine layout looking at what information will be on which
page, how many pages I am going to have and the type of layout that will be on each page. This will include
experiments and rough examples of what my pages will look like. I will also decide on what peace's of my
photography that I am going to use, selecting the best pictures that I have and that match the theme of my fanzine.
3rdweek For the third week I will start my production on my cover. I will first select the image that I want in the middle page,
I will edit the picture changing the contrast, brightness and the Hue/saturation to help make my image look more
visually appealing. Once I have done this I will decide on what font and text I want to use on my cover. I will use a
font that looks bold and clear so that my target audience can easily see the text and so that when the fanzine is
scattered around other products it will be easier to see and be noticed when surrounded by other existing products.
In this week I will also start production on my content page as well as my first double page spread. This will involve
editing another image that will be going on my double page as well as writing the information that is needed for
this article.
4th week Then in the fourth week I will start production on my next double page spread that will purely consist of just images
to show the audience other peace's of work that I have made. This will mean I will have to edit a range of different
pictures to make them look more visually appealing and so that I can make them better match the design of my
product. Once I have done this will move on to making the next double page spread where I will be talking about
my second topic.
5th week On the final week I will be starting my final duple page spread where I will be talking about my third topic and will
be starting and finishing my production on my back page. My back page wont take long though however because I
will not be including a lot of information on the back page. Although my double page spread will take longer
because of the amount of information that I will include on that page.

Interview:
You should document the process of getting your interview. You should produce a range of questions and also a list of
interviewees.
You should provide an unedited transcript of the interview as well as at least one draft of it.
Interviews can be written in whatever style you prefer.
Interview:
Interview:
Interview:
Copy:
All the other written elements of your fanzine are up to you but should be documented here. If you decide to write a
review, a polemic, an article or anything else, it needs to be documented here.
Drafts are good so it is worth writing a first draft then producing a second which not only checks for spelling and grammar
errors but also ensures that your work has a consistent style, quality and structure.
Recording your research, as and when it happens, is also a very strong idea. If you need to look up a fact or read an
article, record that.
Cover Draft
• On my cover I will only have the masthead and one small amount of information at the bottom which will be a
maximum of 2 lines worth because I want my audience to focus on the cover image more than the information
Article 1 Draft
• Will be talking about one of my favourite photos that I have talked about without any sort of illusion style
• Equipment and methods that I used to take the photos that I have chosen to look at.
• The location that I took the image including the type of weather and the time it was when I took the photo.
• Any tools that I have used to edit the photo and how I did it.
• Why I like this specific photo more than the majority as well as what I want the photo to show the reader and make
them feel.
• Will have an equal amount of information and text
Article 2 draft
• Will be comparing one of my favourite photos that I have taken with the same photo with an illusion style added to it.
• The location that I took the image including the type of weather and the time it was when I took the photo.
• The tools that I used on photoshop that I used to make the illusion version of my photo as well as the tools that I used
to improve the image and make the image look more appealing to my target audience.
• Will have a larger text to image ratio
Article 3 draft (the same as Article 2)
• Will be comparing one of my favourite photos that I have taken with the same photo with an illusion style added to it.
• The location that I took the image including the type of weather and the time it was when I took the photo.
• The tools that I used on photoshop that I used to make the illusion version of my photo as well as the tools that I used
to improve the image and make the image look more appealing to my target audience.
• Will have a larger text to image ratio
Bullet point Drafts
Gallery page
• Will have 3 or 4 images on this page with no text.
Advertisement draft
• Will have an advertisement on a single page to advertise a camera that is good quality but isn’t overpriced and is affordable for 17-20-year olds.
• Will talk about what the camera is best for E.G. landscape photography, up close photography, if it’s good in the dark, etc
• Will have a larger image to text ratio
• Style will possibly be different to the rest of the fanzine
Cover written Draft
My masthead will say “Behind the Lens” in a font that is bold and simple. In the bottom left of my cover or in the centre at the bottom I will have the text ”by
Sam Nixon”
Article 1 written Draft
First of all the camera that I used for all of my photos was the Samsung NX300 with the Samsung 18-55mm OIS f/3.5-5.6 –NX Zoom lens this will cost roughly
around £245 depending on where you buy your equipment. This camera is great to use because of how light Wight it is and because the movable screen can
help you to get great angles on the shots that you want. For example if you are trying to take a photo of something that’s in a tight space which only you
camera can fit but you can’t see the screen when its in there you can easily move the screen so that you can see it from any angle. This camera is both good
for landscape photography and for close up photography however I would not recommend using this camera for taking photos while moving because the
images end up being extremely blurry, however when using the video mode the camera is great for getting HD clips that are crystal clear. Although I didn’t
use a tripod to take this photo I would recommend to any aspirating photography to start getting into the habit of using one when possible because it helps
greatly in getting shots that are clear and not blurry because many times I have had a good picture ruined because of the slight blur that was made from the
shake of my hand. In my first article I will be carful with the information that I use to make sure that my audience stays interested in what I’m talking about,
making them want to read more and possibly increasing the chances of them spreading news about my product creating free advertising.
Article 2 written Draft
To make the image on the right I had to use a range of different pictures from my collection. For this part I will give you step by step instructions on how to
make the image on the right while also talking about why I have chosen the certain images that I have and why I personally think they are the best types of
photos for this type of design. Similar to how the process is explained below on this image. (article 2 will be laid out and described the same as article 1) In my
second article I will be carful with the information that I use to make sure that my audience stays interested in what I’m talking about, making them want to
read more and possibly increasing the chances of them spreading news about my product creating free advertising.
Bullet point Drafts/Written Drafts
Written Drafts
Advertisement written draft
• For my advert I will be advertising a Samsung camera as well as other peace's of equipment that can go with the product.
• For my advert I will use a similar sort of style to the rest of my fanzine however I will make it slightly different so that my target audience
knows that this section is talking about something different than the rest of the magazine before they’ve even read any of the information.
Back page written draft
• I will not have a large amount of information on my back page because when my audience first looks at my fanzine I don’t want them to think
that there is an incredible amount of information and nothing else, however I don’t want my audience to look at my back page and find
nothing because if they do they might feel as though this work isn’t up to good enough standards. To make sure this doesn’t happen I will put
a very small amount of text on the back so there isn’t so much information that the audience is put off but the information is something
interesting and different to other products enough to make my target audience more likely to read my fanzine to because of the interesting
back cover.

  • 4. Existing Product This type of existing product has used a variety of different content to help make their product more interesting to their target audience and to make their product more unique. This helps to make the product stand out more to their target audience when around other competitors, the range of different artistic styles and designs on each page helps to keep the audience interested because there is always something new and interesting for them to look at/read

  • 15. Idea 1 • For this idea I was thinking about writing about my own personal photography. I will talk about my favourite peace's of photography that I have personally took and talk in detail about what equipment and settings I used when taking the photo as well as any other methods that I used when taking the photo such as if I was laid down, on an angle, etc. After I will show a modified picture of the image where I have used Photoshop to create a unique design and discuss how I did it. At some points in my magazine I will also add some aspects where the audience can interact with my product by giving them some sort of game to play like a decision tree where the audience makes certain choices to get an interesting outcome. • I will attempt to make a messy and artistic style/design for my fanzine to make my work look unusual and different. This will hopefully make my fanzine more visually appealing and interesting however some pages of my magazine will be purely just images so that my audience can focus on the images instead of any information. For the cover I will use quite large font to make my fanzine stand out to my target audience, for inside my fanzine I will use a range of different sized fonts because certain fonts are better suited for certain topics and for the back of my fanzine I will use a medium sized font because I won’t have a large of information on the back. Overall throughout my whole fanzine I will have an even photo and text ratio. I will also make sure to use a bright and vibrant colour scheme to help make my fanzine stand out and look appealing to my target audience. • For my Experiments on the pages above I used a range of different tools. For the first idea I used the brush tool on soft round, add layer mask, polygonal lasso tool, paint bucket and clipping mask. • For my second idea I used the blending options and deselected the colour red, the rectangular marquee tool and mainly changed the layer to create this idea.

  • 21. My cover will be similar to this existing product below. On my cover I will have a very small amount of text, this will be the masthead and the authors name. I will do this so that my target audience isn’t overwhelmed by information and so that my fanzine looks more appealing to read. I will have a visually appealing and bold image in the centre of the cover to get the audiences attention so that when the product is surrounded by other products it is easy to spot, I will also help this by adding a border round my page so that the image isn’t ruined when the image goes over the page. Overall I will have 12 pages as you can see from the layout on the slide below showing how many pages I will have and what information will be on what page. For the back page of my fanzine I will either have just pictures on the back and no text like one of the images below or I will have a small amount of text and a plain background like the other image below however I have still not decided. I think the one that is purely images is good because it helps to make the fanzine more visually appealing and makes the audience more likely to like it because they are more attracted to images rather then lots of text however the other idea of only having a small amount of text and a plain background is also good because it isn’t an overwhelming amount of text and the small amount of text that I put on the back could be something catchy that sticks with the reader for a long time or a question that interests the reader and makes them think about my fanzine for a long time while also possibly talking to more people about my fanzine because of the strange but interesting question. I will also make a wide variety of different styles and pages on each page to keep the audience interested and to make my fanzine more unique. Page Information Or

  • 23. Cover Layout Page layout DPS Layout For my cover I will use very little information to make my fanzine seem more appealing to my target audience because a large amount of information can often put people from my target audience off and make the product unappealing. For my DPS I will use a smaller font then the one you see in this image so that I can fit more information onto my pages however I will still not use too much information because I want to make sure there is an equal amount of text and images.
  • 24. Production schedule 1st week For the first week I will start producing ideas and thinking about what tools a equipment I will use to produce my product. In the first week I will research my target audience. Looking at what color scheme would best suit them as well as, what text and other designs are best suited for my certain target audience. 2nd week For the second week I will be planning the layout of my fanzine layout looking at what information will be on which page, how many pages I am going to have and the type of layout that will be on each page. This will include experiments and rough examples of what my pages will look like. I will also decide on what peace's of my photography that I am going to use, selecting the best pictures that I have and that match the theme of my fanzine. 3rdweek For the third week I will start my production on my cover. I will first select the image that I want in the middle page, I will edit the picture changing the contrast, brightness and the Hue/saturation to help make my image look more visually appealing. Once I have done this I will decide on what font and text I want to use on my cover. I will use a font that looks bold and clear so that my target audience can easily see the text and so that when the fanzine is scattered around other products it will be easier to see and be noticed when surrounded by other existing products. In this week I will also start production on my content page as well as my first double page spread. This will involve editing another image that will be going on my double page as well as writing the information that is needed for this article. 4th week Then in the fourth week I will start production on my next double page spread that will purely consist of just images to show the audience other peace's of work that I have made. This will mean I will have to edit a range of different pictures to make them look more visually appealing and so that I can make them better match the design of my product. Once I have done this will move on to making the next double page spread where I will be talking about my second topic. 5th week On the final week I will be starting my final duple page spread where I will be talking about my third topic and will be starting and finishing my production on my back page. My back page wont take long though however because I will not be including a lot of information on the back page. Although my double page spread will take longer because of the amount of information that I will include on that page.
  • 26. Interview: You should document the process of getting your interview. You should produce a range of questions and also a list of interviewees. You should provide an unedited transcript of the interview as well as at least one draft of it. Interviews can be written in whatever style you prefer.
  • 30. Copy: All the other written elements of your fanzine are up to you but should be documented here. If you decide to write a review, a polemic, an article or anything else, it needs to be documented here. Drafts are good so it is worth writing a first draft then producing a second which not only checks for spelling and grammar errors but also ensures that your work has a consistent style, quality and structure. Recording your research, as and when it happens, is also a very strong idea. If you need to look up a fact or read an article, record that.
  • 31. Cover Draft • On my cover I will only have the masthead and one small amount of information at the bottom which will be a maximum of 2 lines worth because I want my audience to focus on the cover image more than the information Article 1 Draft • Will be talking about one of my favourite photos that I have talked about without any sort of illusion style • Equipment and methods that I used to take the photos that I have chosen to look at. • The location that I took the image including the type of weather and the time it was when I took the photo. • Any tools that I have used to edit the photo and how I did it. • Why I like this specific photo more than the majority as well as what I want the photo to show the reader and make them feel. • Will have an equal amount of information and text Article 2 draft • Will be comparing one of my favourite photos that I have taken with the same photo with an illusion style added to it. • The location that I took the image including the type of weather and the time it was when I took the photo. • The tools that I used on photoshop that I used to make the illusion version of my photo as well as the tools that I used to improve the image and make the image look more appealing to my target audience. • Will have a larger text to image ratio Article 3 draft (the same as Article 2) • Will be comparing one of my favourite photos that I have taken with the same photo with an illusion style added to it. • The location that I took the image including the type of weather and the time it was when I took the photo. • The tools that I used on photoshop that I used to make the illusion version of my photo as well as the tools that I used to improve the image and make the image look more appealing to my target audience. • Will have a larger text to image ratio Bullet point Drafts
  • 32. Gallery page • Will have 3 or 4 images on this page with no text. Advertisement draft • Will have an advertisement on a single page to advertise a camera that is good quality but isn’t overpriced and is affordable for 17-20-year olds. • Will talk about what the camera is best for E.G. landscape photography, up close photography, if it’s good in the dark, etc • Will have a larger image to text ratio • Style will possibly be different to the rest of the fanzine Cover written Draft My masthead will say “Behind the Lens” in a font that is bold and simple. In the bottom left of my cover or in the centre at the bottom I will have the text ”by Sam Nixon” Article 1 written Draft First of all the camera that I used for all of my photos was the Samsung NX300 with the Samsung 18-55mm OIS f/3.5-5.6 –NX Zoom lens this will cost roughly around £245 depending on where you buy your equipment. This camera is great to use because of how light Wight it is and because the movable screen can help you to get great angles on the shots that you want. For example if you are trying to take a photo of something that’s in a tight space which only you camera can fit but you can’t see the screen when its in there you can easily move the screen so that you can see it from any angle. This camera is both good for landscape photography and for close up photography however I would not recommend using this camera for taking photos while moving because the images end up being extremely blurry, however when using the video mode the camera is great for getting HD clips that are crystal clear. Although I didn’t use a tripod to take this photo I would recommend to any aspirating photography to start getting into the habit of using one when possible because it helps greatly in getting shots that are clear and not blurry because many times I have had a good picture ruined because of the slight blur that was made from the shake of my hand. In my first article I will be carful with the information that I use to make sure that my audience stays interested in what I’m talking about, making them want to read more and possibly increasing the chances of them spreading news about my product creating free advertising. Article 2 written Draft To make the image on the right I had to use a range of different pictures from my collection. For this part I will give you step by step instructions on how to make the image on the right while also talking about why I have chosen the certain images that I have and why I personally think they are the best types of photos for this type of design. Similar to how the process is explained below on this image. (article 2 will be laid out and described the same as article 1) In my second article I will be carful with the information that I use to make sure that my audience stays interested in what I’m talking about, making them want to read more and possibly increasing the chances of them spreading news about my product creating free advertising. Bullet point Drafts/Written Drafts
  • 33.
  • 34. Written Drafts Advertisement written draft • For my advert I will be advertising a Samsung camera as well as other peace's of equipment that can go with the product. • For my advert I will use a similar sort of style to the rest of my fanzine however I will make it slightly different so that my target audience knows that this section is talking about something different than the rest of the magazine before they’ve even read any of the information. Back page written draft • I will not have a large amount of information on my back page because when my audience first looks at my fanzine I don’t want them to think that there is an incredible amount of information and nothing else, however I don’t want my audience to look at my back page and find nothing because if they do they might feel as though this work isn’t up to good enough standards. To make sure this doesn’t happen I will put a very small amount of text on the back so there isn’t so much information that the audience is put off but the information is something interesting and different to other products enough to make my target audience more likely to read my fanzine to because of the interesting back cover.

Editor's Notes

  1. Look at different types of content, design elements, the subject and context. Type of content- studio/location photography, articles, reviews, adverts, sketches, drawings and other artwork Design – colour schemes, photography and images, text/picture ratio, font choices Subject and context – What subject(s) is the fanzine covering? What is the writing style? What is the mode of address? In what context was the fanzine produced? Context is the environment in which something was produced. Think about the time this was made.

  4. You don’t need to find links between different fanzines because, often there are not any.
  5. Talk about the different tools that I used
  6. Think about a subject you could write about, a design style could work in and why you would want to do it. Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include? Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.

  8. List all products researched in previous sections. Include anything additional you have watched/read in preparation for production. Alphabetise your list.
  9. A range of ideas to take forward in to production. Should include images, colour schemes and font choices. Could include mock ups and evidence of existing design work which is inspiring you.
  10. A plan for the pages of your book. What will be the cover? What will be the running order? What will go in it? How many pages for each item? This is important to get right if you want it to print correctly later on. It will also help you plan the space you have.
