1. Audience Research-
Questionnaire
I have conducted detailed audience research by giving out 20
questionnaires which ask a series of questions about peoples
opinions/views on pop magazines in order to ensure that my
magazine appeals to the intended target audience and has a high
chance of being successful. This presentation outlines the results
from my questionnaire and how each question has effectively helped
me in terms of thinking about my magazine production.
2. Q1) Which of these age ranges best suits you?

From the results I have identified that the majority of people who
answered my questionnaires are aged between 13-18 which gives me an
idea of who my target audience will be when making my magazine which
is a younger audience therefore this gives me an understanding of what
younger people may want to see or read in a magazine such as stories on
bands/artists or free posters.
3. Q2)What is your gender?

Female
From this question I have identified that my target audience is
most likely going to be female because most of the people I asked
were female this means that I will create my magazine to appeal to
this gender such as using more feminine colours in my colour
scheme eg pink, purple/ Moreover, I will include coverlines and
cover stories which entice the female audience for example a article
on fashion or some other girly topic.
4. Q3)Choose your favourite artist from the
following five.

I asked 20 people to choose their favourite pop act from a list of five to allow me
to get a clear idea of what pop artists and bands people most like, from these
results I have acknowledged that the most popular artist/band is one direction
and the second most popular being 5 sos, people also liked Rita Ora and Ella
Henderson fairly well. These results will help me possibly choose my main
image for my music magazine front cover because I am now aware of what pop
acts people will want to see and read about. The artists such as Ella Henderson
and Rita Ora who a few people like could be featured in a shorter story in my
magazine rather than the main cover story.
5. Q4)Name your top 3 favourite pop artist or band

Moreover, I asked different people to name their top 3 favourite pop singer or
singers so that I was to get a clearer idea of who people want to see in a pop
music magazine whereas in the last question I gave a list of acts for people to
choose from which might not have been accurate as people could of just chose
any for the sake of completing the questionnaire. From this pie chart I can see
that the audience really like Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith which I wouldn't of
known if I just used the last question. Now I am considering using one of
these two artists for the cover of my magazine.
6. Q5)Give three words in which you would

I asked this question to help me decide what the title of my music magazine is
going to be, the most popular word in which people associated with pop music
was happy. Therefore, I could name my magazine ‘Happy Hour’ or ‘Pop Joy’.
Some people also said that they think of the word ‘gossip’ in terms of pop music
so maybe I could call my magazine ‘Juicy’ or ‘Gossip Galore’ however I need to
remember that the main focus of my magazine is music so my title ideally must
refer to this or have connotations of pop music.

I asked people what they most like about pop music so that I can understand
what my intended audience expects in a pop music magazine. The aspect
people most liked was the ‘upbeat sound’. In terms of producing my pop
magazine, I could include feature articles on weekly pop songs to engage the
target audience.

I asked people what their favourite colour is, this is an extremely
important question in regards to helping me produce a pop
magazine that appeals to the intended audience. The most
popular colours were pink, yellow and red which are the colours I
will use in my pop magazine, these colours connote pop as they
are bright and bold and suggest happiness.
9. Q8)How often would you say you purchase a

This question is vital in deciding the frequency of publication for my pop
magazine, from the questionnaire I was able to discover that most people buy
magazines monthly so I will most probably use monthly as my frequency of
publication so that the target audience are willing to purchase it this way.
Also, now that I am aware people buy magazines mainly monthly I can start
thinking of monthly feature articles which might appeal to my target audience
eg ‘Music Monthly’.
10. Q9)How much would you be willing to pay for a

£4.00-5.99
This question has helped me think of possible prices for my magazine, most
people said they would be willing to pay £1-2.00 for a magazine. Therefore,
I will most likely use this as my price because I know the audience is willing
to pay it and my magazine will then have a higher chance of being
successful.
11. Q10)What would you expect to see on a pop

I asked people what they would expect to see on a pop magazine double page
spread because I need to make sure that my magazines double page spread is as
appealing as it can be for the target audience. Most people I asked stated that
they would mostly expect to see a cover story or a Q&A so I will be considering
either of these when creating my magazine double page spread. Along with the
previous questions I asked about what pop artists/bands people liked and this
one I have a clear idea of what my double page spread might feature.

I asked different people what they would prefer to see in a pop magazine, most
people said they would prefer to read a cover story or a Q&A. This question is
important in producing my magazine because I need to make sure that my
magazine is consistent in appealing and keeping the target audience interested.
Also, no one said they would want to see images so when I am creating my
magazine I will try to use less images and focus more on the written part.
Without the questionnaire I wouldn't know specifically what people want in a
pop magazine and I would probably include boring features which don't appeal
much to the intended audience.
13. Q13)Would you be more atttracted to a magazine if
there were free posters of your favourite artist
inside?
Would you be more attracted to a

In order for my magazine to be successful and appeal to the intended audience I
need to find out everything people want to see in a pop magazine, I asked
whether people would be more attracted to a magazine if there were free posters
of their favourite artist inside, the majority of people answered yes. Thus, I now
think it is a good idea to include free posters in my magazine.

To ensure my magazine is successful I also need to know which shot types
people prefer to see on my magazine front cover as it is the first thing the
target audience see. Most people said that they would prefer to see a medium
close up, I will use this feedback when producing my magazine.
15. Q15)Would you rather the subscription details

From this question I have learnt that most of the people I asked would rather
that the subscription details appeared on the contents page of the magazine,
when I create my magazine I will include mine on the contents page as I
know this is where people want them to be.
16. Conclusion
Overall, the questionnaires I gave out for my audience research have allowed me
to analyse what people want and prefer to see in a pop magazine giving me
more ideas in terms of my colour scheme, cover stories and how I am going to
produce my magazine so it appeals to the target audience. Furthermore, I now
have a better understanding of which pop acts people like and I will probably
be using these when creating my magazine. Finally, the audience research has
been effective and without it my magazine would have low chances of being
successful. I am now confident that my magazine will appeal to its intended
audience and have a high chance of being successful.
