INTRODUCTION
Rayon is a natural-based material that is made
from the cellulose of wood pulp or cotton. This
natural base gives it many of the
characteristics—low cost, diversity, and
comfort—that have led to its popularity and
success. Today, rayon is considered to be one
of the most versatile and economical man-
made fibers available. It has been called "the
laboratory's first gift to the loom."
MICROSCOPIC STRUCTURE
➤ The structure of rayon fiber is generally os
that of smooth, inelastic filament like glass
rod. However different process, addictive
and finishing techniques can vary physical
appearance and structure of the fiber.
CHEMICAL STRUCTURE
➤ Chemical structure of viscose rayon is
same as that of cotton, that is Cellulose,
but the polymer chains are much shorter.
The degree of polymerization value of
rayon is 400 - 700 while that of cotton is
5000
MANUFACTORING

process
PROCESS
1] Cellulose
Purified cellulose for rayon production usually
comes from specially processed wood pulp. It
is sometimes referred to as “dissolving
cellulose” or “dissolving pulp” to distinguish
it from lower grade pulps used for paper-
making and other purposes.
2] Steeping
The cellulose sheets are saturated with a
solution of caustic soda (or sodium
hydroxide) and allowed to steep for enough
time for the caustic solution to penetrate the
cellulose and convert some of it into “soda
cellulose”, the sodium salt of cellulose.
3] Pressing
The soda cellulose is squeezed mechanically to
remove excess caustic soda solution.
4] Shredding
The soda cellulose is mechanically shredded to
increase surface area and make the cellulose
easier to process. This shredded cellulose is often
referred to as “white crumb”.
5] Aging
The white crumb is allowed to stand in contact
with the oxygen of the ambient air. Because of
the high alkalinity of white crumb, the cellulose
is partially oxidized and degraded to lower
molecular weights.
6] Xanthation
The properly aged white crumb is placed into a
churn, or other mixing vessel, and treated with
gaseous carbon disulfide. The soda cellulose
reacts with the CS2 to form xanthate ester
groups. The carbon disulfide also reacts with the
alkaline medium to form inorganic impurities
which give the cellulose mixture a characteristic
yellow crumb.
7] Dissolving
The yellow crumb is dissolved in aqueous
caustic solution. The large xanthate
substituents on the cellulose force the chains
apart, reducing the interchain hydrogen bonds
and allowing water molecules to solvate and
separate the chains, leading to solution of the
otherwise insoluble cellulose.
8] Ripening
The viscose is allowed to stand for a period of
time to “ripen”. Two important process occur
during ripening: Redistribution and loss of
xanthate groups.
9] Filtering
The viscose is filtered to remove undissolved
materials that might disrupt the spinning process or
cause defects in the rayon filament.
10] Degassing
Bubbles of air entrapped in the viscose must
be removed prior to extrusion or they would
cause voids, or weak spots, in the fine rayon
filaments.
11] Spinning

The viscose is forced through a spinneret, a
device resembling a shower head with many
small holes. Each hole produces a fine
filament of viscose. As the viscose exits the
spinneret, it comes in contact with a solution
of sulfuric acid, sodium sulfate and, usually,
Zn++ ions. Several processes occur at this
point which cause the cellulose to be
regenerated and precipitate from solution.
Water diffuses out from the extruded viscose
to increase the concentration in the filament
beyond the limit of solubility.
12] Drawing
The rayon filaments are stretched while the
cellulose chains are still relatively mobile. This
causes the chains to stretch out and orient
along the fiber axis. As the chains become
more parallel, interchain hydrogen bonds form,
giving the filaments the properties necessary
for use as textile fibers
13] Washing
The freshly regenerated rayon contains many
salts and other water soluble impurities which
need to be removed. Several different washing
techniques may be used.
14] Cutting
If the rayon is to be used as staple (i.e., discreet
lengths of fiber), the group of filaments
(termed “tow”) is passed through a rotary
cutter to provide a fiber which can be processed
in much the same way as cotton.
MODIFIED
VISCOSE
RAYONS
different types
➤ Tyre Yarn : A viscose solution of viscosity 100 poise containing
modifiers 1-3% by weight of cellulose and with a CS2 content of 40% is
spun underripe into aqueous spinning bath.
➤ High Wet-Modulus Yarn [HMW] : In this process the aging of alkali
cellulose is eliminated and dissolving cellulose xanthate in water rather
than in a caustic soda also eliminate the ripening of cellulose xanthate.
Lower the concentration of acid used in spinning bath with little salt.
These are known high wet modulus which means to have greater
resistance to deformation when wet.
➤ Polynosic Fibre : Polynosic is similar rayon fibre but
difference in process of manufacturing that viscose rayon.
Since the manufacturing process is different so their
morphological structure is also different. Generally polynosic
fibre has high crystallinity and high orientation. This give
high mechanical strength and chemical resistant, high wet
modulus and more dimension stable.
➤ Super High Wet Modulus Rayon : By adding 1%
formaldehyde to spin bath or to the viscose substantially
increases the toughness and plasticity of viscose gel. We can
get the stretch of 500-600%. Disadvantage of this compound
is that it is very toxic.
properties
BLENDS
➤ Blends : Regular rayon and high wet
modulus usually blend with many
fibers like polyester, acrylic, nylon,
acetate, cotton, flax, wool and ramie.
➤ with polyester, nylon and acrylic :
Rayon contributes absorbency,
comfort and softness
➤ with cotton : It alter appearance to
create soft luster.
➤ with wool: It decreases the cost
➤ with flax and ramie : It can help
produce appearance that are
typically associated with linen like
fabrics.
SPECIALITY RAYON
Flame retardant fibers:
Flame retardance is achieved by the adhesion of the correct flame- retardant
chemical to viscose. Examples of additives are alkyl, aryl and halogenated alkyl or
aryl phosphates, phosphazenes, phosphonates and polyphosphonates. Flame
retardant rayon have the additives distributed uniformly through the interior of
the fiber and this property is advantageous over flame retardant cotton fibers
where the flame retardant concentrates at the surface of the fiber.
Super absorbent rayons:
This is being produced in order to obtain higher water retention capacity (although
regular rayon retains as much as 100 % of its weight). These fibers are used in
surgical nonwovens.
Micro denier fibers:
Rayon fibers with deniers below 1.0 are now being developed and introduced into
the market. These can be used to substantially improve fabric strength and
absorbent properties.
Cross section modification:
Modification in cross sectional shape of viscose rayon can be used to dramatically
change the fibers aesthetic and technical properties. For example: Viloft: A flat
cross sectional fiber sold in Europe, which gives a unique soft handle, pleasing
drape and handle. Fiber ML(multi limbed): Another modified cross section fiber
that has a very well defined trilobal shape. Fabrics made of these fiber have
considerably enhanced absorbency, bulk, cover and wet rigidity all of which are
suitable for usage as nonwovens.
PROPERTIES
• Rayon is a versatile fiber
• Rayon is very soft, cool comfortable and very good absorbent property but could
not be able to protect body heat and used in humid steamy climatic conditions.
• Rayon fibre has the same comfort property as natural fibres.
• Rayon can replicate the feel and texture of silk, cotton, linen and wool.
• Rayon can easily be dyed in variety of colors
• Rayon has very lower elastic recovery of any fibre.
• HWM rayon is very stronger and reveals good durability. HWM rayon can be
machine washed.
• Usual rayon fibres recommended care for dry cleaning purpose only.
USE
• Apparel: Accessories, blouses,
dresses, jackets, lingerie, linings,
millinery, slacks, sportshirts,
sportswear, suits, ties, work
clothes
• Home Furnishings:
Bedspreads, blankets, curtains,
draperies, sheets, slipcovers,
tablecloths, upholstery
• Industrial Uses: Industrial
products, medical surgical
products, nonwoven products,
tire cord
• Other Uses: Feminine hygiene
products
CARE TIPS
Most rayon fabrics should be dry-
cleaned, but some types of fabric and
garment construction are such that they
can be hand or machine washed.
◦ Fabrics containing rayon can be bleached;
some finishes, however, are sensitive to
chlorine bleach.
◦ Use mild lukewarm or cool suds. Gently
squeeze suds through fabric and rinse in
lukewarm water. Do not wring or twist
the article.
◦ Smooth or shake out article and place on a
non-rust hanger to dry. Rayon sweaters
should be dried flat.
◦ Press the article while damp on the wrong
side with the iron at a moderate setting.
If finishing on the right side is required,
a press cloth should be used.
◦ Between wearings, rayon articles may be
pressed with a cool iron.

It is sometimes referred to as “dissolving cellulose” or “dissolving pulp” to distinguish it from lower grade pulps used for paper- making and other purposes. 2] Steeping The cellulose sheets are saturated with a solution of caustic soda (or sodium hydroxide) and allowed to steep for enough time for the caustic solution to penetrate the cellulose and convert some of it into “soda cellulose”, the sodium salt of cellulose. 3] Pressing The soda cellulose is squeezed mechanically to remove excess caustic soda solution.
  • 7. 4] Shredding The soda cellulose is mechanically shredded to increase surface area and make the cellulose easier to process. This shredded cellulose is often referred to as “white crumb”. 5] Aging The white crumb is allowed to stand in contact with the oxygen of the ambient air. Because of the high alkalinity of white crumb, the cellulose is partially oxidized and degraded to lower molecular weights. 6] Xanthation The properly aged white crumb is placed into a churn, or other mixing vessel, and treated with gaseous carbon disulfide. The soda cellulose reacts with the CS2 to form xanthate ester groups. The carbon disulfide also reacts with the alkaline medium to form inorganic impurities which give the cellulose mixture a characteristic yellow crumb.
  • 8. 7] Dissolving The yellow crumb is dissolved in aqueous caustic solution. The large xanthate substituents on the cellulose force the chains apart, reducing the interchain hydrogen bonds and allowing water molecules to solvate and separate the chains, leading to solution of the otherwise insoluble cellulose. 8] Ripening The viscose is allowed to stand for a period of time to “ripen”. Two important process occur during ripening: Redistribution and loss of xanthate groups. 9] Filtering The viscose is filtered to remove undissolved materials that might disrupt the spinning process or cause defects in the rayon filament.
  • 9. 10] Degassing Bubbles of air entrapped in the viscose must be removed prior to extrusion or they would cause voids, or weak spots, in the fine rayon filaments. 11] Spinning
The viscose is forced through a spinneret, a device resembling a shower head with many small holes. Each hole produces a fine filament of viscose. As the viscose exits the spinneret, it comes in contact with a solution of sulfuric acid, sodium sulfate and, usually, Zn++ ions. Several processes occur at this point which cause the cellulose to be regenerated and precipitate from solution. Water diffuses out from the extruded viscose to increase the concentration in the filament beyond the limit of solubility.
  • 10. 12] Drawing The rayon filaments are stretched while the cellulose chains are still relatively mobile. This causes the chains to stretch out and orient along the fiber axis. As the chains become more parallel, interchain hydrogen bonds form, giving the filaments the properties necessary for use as textile fibers 13] Washing The freshly regenerated rayon contains many salts and other water soluble impurities which need to be removed. Several different washing techniques may be used. 14] Cutting If the rayon is to be used as staple (i.e., discreet lengths of fiber), the group of filaments (termed “tow”) is passed through a rotary cutter to provide a fiber which can be processed in much the same way as cotton.
  • 12. ➤ Tyre Yarn : A viscose solution of viscosity 100 poise containing modifiers 1-3% by weight of cellulose and with a CS2 content of 40% is spun underripe into aqueous spinning bath. ➤ High Wet-Modulus Yarn [HMW] : In this process the aging of alkali cellulose is eliminated and dissolving cellulose xanthate in water rather than in a caustic soda also eliminate the ripening of cellulose xanthate. Lower the concentration of acid used in spinning bath with little salt. These are known high wet modulus which means to have greater resistance to deformation when wet.
  • 13. ➤ Polynosic Fibre : Polynosic is similar rayon fibre but difference in process of manufacturing that viscose rayon. Since the manufacturing process is different so their morphological structure is also different. Generally polynosic fibre has high crystallinity and high orientation. This give high mechanical strength and chemical resistant, high wet modulus and more dimension stable. ➤ Super High Wet Modulus Rayon : By adding 1% formaldehyde to spin bath or to the viscose substantially increases the toughness and plasticity of viscose gel. We can get the stretch of 500-600%. Disadvantage of this compound is that it is very toxic.
  • 15. BLENDS ➤ Blends : Regular rayon and high wet modulus usually blend with many fibers like polyester, acrylic, nylon, acetate, cotton, flax, wool and ramie. ➤ with polyester, nylon and acrylic : Rayon contributes absorbency, comfort and softness ➤ with cotton : It alter appearance to create soft luster. ➤ with wool: It decreases the cost ➤ with flax and ramie : It can help produce appearance that are typically associated with linen like fabrics.
  • 16. SPECIALITY RAYON Flame retardant fibers: Flame retardance is achieved by the adhesion of the correct flame- retardant chemical to viscose. Examples of additives are alkyl, aryl and halogenated alkyl or aryl phosphates, phosphazenes, phosphonates and polyphosphonates. Flame retardant rayon have the additives distributed uniformly through the interior of the fiber and this property is advantageous over flame retardant cotton fibers where the flame retardant concentrates at the surface of the fiber. Super absorbent rayons: This is being produced in order to obtain higher water retention capacity (although regular rayon retains as much as 100 % of its weight). These fibers are used in surgical nonwovens.
  • 17. Micro denier fibers: Rayon fibers with deniers below 1.0 are now being developed and introduced into the market. These can be used to substantially improve fabric strength and absorbent properties. Cross section modification: Modification in cross sectional shape of viscose rayon can be used to dramatically change the fibers aesthetic and technical properties. For example: Viloft: A flat cross sectional fiber sold in Europe, which gives a unique soft handle, pleasing drape and handle. Fiber ML(multi limbed): Another modified cross section fiber that has a very well defined trilobal shape. Fabrics made of these fiber have considerably enhanced absorbency, bulk, cover and wet rigidity all of which are suitable for usage as nonwovens.
  • 18. PROPERTIES • Rayon is a versatile fiber • Rayon is very soft, cool comfortable and very good absorbent property but could not be able to protect body heat and used in humid steamy climatic conditions. • Rayon fibre has the same comfort property as natural fibres. • Rayon can replicate the feel and texture of silk, cotton, linen and wool. • Rayon can easily be dyed in variety of colors • Rayon has very lower elastic recovery of any fibre. • HWM rayon is very stronger and reveals good durability. HWM rayon can be machine washed. • Usual rayon fibres recommended care for dry cleaning purpose only.
  • 19. USE • Apparel: Accessories, blouses, dresses, jackets, lingerie, linings, millinery, slacks, sportshirts, sportswear, suits, ties, work clothes • Home Furnishings: Bedspreads, blankets, curtains, draperies, sheets, slipcovers, tablecloths, upholstery • Industrial Uses: Industrial products, medical surgical products, nonwoven products, tire cord • Other Uses: Feminine hygiene products
  • 20. CARE TIPS Most rayon fabrics should be dry- cleaned, but some types of fabric and garment construction are such that they can be hand or machine washed. ◦ Fabrics containing rayon can be bleached; some finishes, however, are sensitive to chlorine bleach. ◦ Use mild lukewarm or cool suds. Gently squeeze suds through fabric and rinse in lukewarm water. Do not wring or twist the article. ◦ Smooth or shake out article and place on a non-rust hanger to dry. Rayon sweaters should be dried flat. ◦ Press the article while damp on the wrong side with the iron at a moderate setting. If finishing on the right side is required, a press cloth should be used. ◦ Between wearings, rayon articles may be pressed with a cool iron.
