Man Made Non Cellulosic Fiber - Nylon
1. Unit 11
Prepared by –

Institute of Design & Technology
Surat
2. Nylon is the first man made synthetic fiber (pure
chemical fiber).
Manufactured from petroleum derivatives and
extruded from the spinneret and draw in desired
length.
Two varieties of nylon is used in apparel purpose –
nylon 6 and nylon 6.6
Nylon 6 polymer is made under the pressure,
extruded, chipped into flakes and melt spun through
spinneret, then filaments are cold drawn.
3. Strength – good tenacity. Strongest textile fiber.
Strength lost when wet. But has excellent abrasion
resistance.
Elasticity – good elasticity. High elongation and
excellent recovery.
Resilience – excellent resilience. Retains smooth
appearance and wrinkles from daily activities.
Drapability – excellent draping qualities. Light weight
sheer nylon has high draping quality. Medium weight
can drape very nicely.
4. Heat conductivity – nylon of open construction will
be cooler than closed construction ex net.
Absorbency - low. Water remains on surface and
hence dries quickly. So its suitable for raincoats.
Cleanliness and washability – easy care garments.
Dirt doesn’t cling and can be wiped with damp cloth.
As its thermoplastic fiber usage of hot water should be
avoided.
Reaction to bleaches – nylon are white and doesn’t
need bleach. Graying nylon should be bleached with
oxidizing bleach like hydrogen peroxide.
5. Shrinkage – retains shape after washing and doesn’t
shrink.
Effect of heat – should be ironed in low temp. hot
iron would result in glazing and then melting of fabric.
Effect of light – low resistance to sunlight. So not at
all suitable for curtains or draperies.
Resistance to mildew – doesn’t get attacked with
mildew.
Resistance to insects – doesn’t get attacked with
moths or insects.
6. Reaction to alkalis – prolonged exposure to alkali
weakens the fabric. Or else its excellent resistance.
Reaction to acid – less resilient to the action of acids
but id damaged by strong acids.
Affinity for dyes – nylon can be easily died and has
good resistance to fading.
Resistance to perspiration – nylon are resistant to
perspiration.
19. When washing nylon – separate white and color
fabrics and can use cold to hot water.
Dry nylon flat or in dryer on cool temperature.
Iron can be done on reverse side of fabric or else only
little steam can be done.
Dry cleaning nylon can be done but no bleaches.
20. The basic manufacturing process includes the
petroleum derivatives which are extruded from the
spinneret and drawn in desired length.
Nylon is a thermoplastic polyamide fiber composed of
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.
Basic raw material is coal
They have excellent strength, resilience, resistance to
insects etc.
Fabric has low absorbency making them suitable for
the rain wear.
