Our chosen song is Shine Ya Light by Rita Ora. From the three possible narratives below which one would
work best?
Narrative 1 ā€“ The video switches between clips of 3 or 4 different teenagers who are all outcasts for different
reasons and we see clips of them getting bullied at school but by the end of the song the teenagers have gained
confidence, they now accept themselves and have changed their situations.
Narrative 2 ā€“ The video presents clips of approximately 5 people expressing themselves in different ways. For
example one person could be dancing at an audition, another person could be painting street art or they could
be playing a musical instrument.
Narrative 3 ā€“ The video will focus on one character thatā€™s living in poverty with abusive parents. It will show
their journey and their attempts to improve their life e.g. getting a job

ā€¢ Out of the three narratives, narrative 1 and narrative 3 were equally less favourable in
comparison to narrative 2, as only two people chose either narrative 1 or narrative 3
as being their favourite.
ā€¢ This could be because the narrative ideas suggested in both narrative 1 and 3 could be
frequently used with other current songs and therefore the ideas arenā€™t considered
unique by the audience resulting in the audience not being engaged as they have
previously witnessed similar storylines and desire change.
ā€¢ The most popular narrative was narrative 2 with the majority of participants picking
it. This could be because participants felt that the storyline suggested in narrative 2 fits
well within the pop genre and the song suggested.
ā€¢ We chose to ask this question as we believe it will greatly benefit our work by helping
us to decide what narrative would be the best one to produce. Itā€™s vital that the
audience like the narrative as the narrative is the main part of the music video and if
the audience donā€™t like the narrative theyā€™re likely to have a negative association with
the song and not be engaged with the music video. We also felt that by asking this
question we could determine whether our narratives were adequate and if they fit into
our genre, if the participants didnā€™tā€™ like any of the ideas proposed we would know that
our ideas had to be rethought.

ā€¢ We asked our participants how many actors would be ideal to feature in the
music video. The outcome was that 31% of participants thought that 4 actors
was the ideal number of characters to feature in the music video and having
just 1 actor featuring in the music video was the least preferable result with
0% of participants suggesting that 1 actor was the ideal amount.
ā€¢ We chose to ask this question as we wanted to clarify the ideal number of
characters to feature in our music video. We felt that this was important as
too many actors can sometimes make the narrative too confusing and as a
result unengaging for the audience whereas too few actors can result in the
audience becoming bored as the camera is constantly on one person. In
addition to this a limited number of actors will also restrict to a certain extent
the type of narratives that could be used. We also felt that itā€™s important to
take the participants opinion on this matter as ultimately they will be our
target audience and therefore their needs to be met to ensure they remain
engaged and enticed within the music video.

ā€¢ One popular response in how the characters should
look in terms of their costume and makeup was to ā€˜fit
their roleā€™ for example a dancer would wear an outfit
in which the audience can easily associate the
costume as being dance related, essentially aiding the
narrative.
ā€¢ Participants also suggested that characters initiate
wearing a costume which noticeably makes the actors
look worse off and then as the narrative progresses to
a more desirable outcome the actors attire changes to
mirror this into a better choice of clothing
reemphasising that the atmosphere/situation has
changed which again aids the narrative.
ā€¢ We decided to ask this question as we felt it to be
important as the characters will be a main part of the
production as they will be featuring in the music
video however the questionnaire has revealed that the
participants feel that the characters appearance isnā€™t
as important as maybe other aspects as long as the
characters appearance is realistic. If the characters
appearance is realistic, the narrative will be
strengthened in terms of it being more believable and
therefore the audience are likely to be fully engaged.

ā€¢ When participants were asked what type of camera shot they would expect in a
music video, the most popular response was a close up. This could be because in
other already existing music videos close ups are shown frequently therefore by
using close ups in our video the production appears more realistic but is at a
slight risk of not being unique.
ā€¢ The response that was not so popular amongst participants was a shot reverse
shot which is normally used when characters are having a conversation and as
we are creating a music video and want to highlight the song as being the main
focus there will be very limited conversations which take place in the music video
making the music video appear more realistic.
ā€¢ We decided to ask this question in order to confirm our initial thoughts regarding
the type of camera shots that would be appropriate and it was important to
consult members from our target audience as their preferences need to be taken
into consideration because we want the music video to be popular amongst our
audience.

ā€¢ We decided to ask the audience what kind of setting they would expect
our music video to have. There were various responses including a house,
a school and some participants suggested multiple settings. However all
the responses to this question aided the narrative choice that was
previously selected. For example as narrative one is centred around
children get bullied, many people that chose this narrative suggested the
ideal setting would be in a school. It was important to ask the participants
what kind of setting they would prefer as the wrong setting would be a
fatal error in the production of the music video and could affect its
potential interest amongst viewers due to the product not being realistic
which would lead to members of the audience becoming bored easily and
therefore distracted.

After asking participants what props they
would think would be appropriate for
our music video it was clear from the
responses that the props had to work in
accordance with the narrative and the
characters specific role. The reason
behind this is to enhance the music video,
making it more realistic and believable
which will help to lock the audiences
attention within the product. Some
participants were unsure of what props
should be used which indicates that props
may not be as important as other aspects
in the production according to the
audience. Therefore we should spend less
time focusing on props and more time on
other aspects such as the characters
appearance which was made apparent to
be quite important to the audience.

process in order to enhance the music video?

the most popular response were transitions. This could be because in other already
existing music videos transitions are shown frequently therefore by using transitions in
our video the production appears more realistic but is at a slight risk of not being
unique. In addition to this transitions could be the most popular choice out of the
selected effects as people who donā€™t do have any media knowledge regarding
terminology may be unaware exactly what the other effects are whereas transitions are
well known amongst the majority of people.
ā€¢ The response that was not so popular amongst participants was a voice over which is
normally used to make it obvious to the audience the plot or what is currently
happening but as we are creating a music video and want to highlight the song as
being the main focus having a voice over would go against this and have to interrupt
the music at some point therefore it is unlikely that a voice over will be used.
ā€¢ We decided to ask this question in order to confirm our initial thoughts regarding the
type of effects that would be appropriate and it was important to consult members
from our target audience as their preferences need to be taken into consideration
because we want the music video to be popular amongst our audience.

  • 2. Our chosen song is Shine Ya Light by Rita Ora. From the three possible narratives below which one would work best? Narrative 1 ā€“ The video switches between clips of 3 or 4 different teenagers who are all outcasts for different reasons and we see clips of them getting bullied at school but by the end of the song the teenagers have gained confidence, they now accept themselves and have changed their situations. Narrative 2 ā€“ The video presents clips of approximately 5 people expressing themselves in different ways. For example one person could be dancing at an audition, another person could be painting street art or they could be playing a musical instrument. Narrative 3 ā€“ The video will focus on one character thatā€™s living in poverty with abusive parents. It will show their journey and their attempts to improve their life e.g. getting a job 0 2 4 6 Narrative 1 Narrative 2 Narrative 3 Numberofparticipants Narratives The number of participants that thought narrative 1, 2 or 3 would fit best with our chosen song

Evaluation of Graph 1 ā€¢ Out of the three narratives, narrative 1 and narrative 3 were equally less favourable in comparison to narrative 2, as only two people chose either narrative 1 or narrative 3 as being their favourite. ā€¢ This could be because the narrative ideas suggested in both narrative 1 and 3 could be frequently used with other current songs and therefore the ideas arenā€™t considered unique by the audience resulting in the audience not being engaged as they have previously witnessed similar storylines and desire change. ā€¢ The most popular narrative was narrative 2 with the majority of participants picking it. This could be because participants felt that the storyline suggested in narrative 2 fits well within the pop genre and the song suggested. ā€¢ We chose to ask this question as we believe it will greatly benefit our work by helping us to decide what narrative would be the best one to produce. Itā€™s vital that the audience like the narrative as the narrative is the main part of the music video and if the audience donā€™t like the narrative theyā€™re likely to have a negative association with the song and not be engaged with the music video. We also felt that by asking this question we could determine whether our narratives were adequate and if they fit into our genre, if the participants didnā€™tā€™ like any of the ideas proposed we would know that our ideas had to be rethought.

  • 5. Evaluation of Graph 2 ā€¢ We asked our participants how many actors would be ideal to feature in the music video. The outcome was that 31% of participants thought that 4 actors was the ideal number of characters to feature in the music video and having just 1 actor featuring in the music video was the least preferable result with 0% of participants suggesting that 1 actor was the ideal amount. ā€¢ We chose to ask this question as we wanted to clarify the ideal number of characters to feature in our music video. We felt that this was important as too many actors can sometimes make the narrative too confusing and as a result unengaging for the audience whereas too few actors can result in the audience becoming bored as the camera is constantly on one person. In addition to this a limited number of actors will also restrict to a certain extent the type of narratives that could be used. We also felt that itā€™s important to take the participants opinion on this matter as ultimately they will be our target audience and therefore their needs to be met to ensure they remain engaged and enticed within the music video.
  • 6. How would you expect the main characters to dress in terms of their costume and makeup? Evaluation ā€¢ One popular response in how the characters should look in terms of their costume and makeup was to ā€˜fit their roleā€™ for example a dancer would wear an outfit in which the audience can easily associate the costume as being dance related, essentially aiding the narrative. ā€¢ Participants also suggested that characters initiate wearing a costume which noticeably makes the actors look worse off and then as the narrative progresses to a more desirable outcome the actors attire changes to mirror this into a better choice of clothing reemphasising that the atmosphere/situation has changed which again aids the narrative. ā€¢ We decided to ask this question as we felt it to be important as the characters will be a main part of the production as they will be featuring in the music video however the questionnaire has revealed that the participants feel that the characters appearance isnā€™t as important as maybe other aspects as long as the characters appearance is realistic. If the characters appearance is realistic, the narrative will be strengthened in terms of it being more believable and therefore the audience are likely to be fully engaged.

  • 9. Evaluation of Graph 3 ā€¢ When participants were asked what type of camera shot they would expect in a music video, the most popular response was a close up. This could be because in other already existing music videos close ups are shown frequently therefore by using close ups in our video the production appears more realistic but is at a slight risk of not being unique. ā€¢ The response that was not so popular amongst participants was a shot reverse shot which is normally used when characters are having a conversation and as we are creating a music video and want to highlight the song as being the main focus there will be very limited conversations which take place in the music video making the music video appear more realistic. ā€¢ We decided to ask this question in order to confirm our initial thoughts regarding the type of camera shots that would be appropriate and it was important to consult members from our target audience as their preferences need to be taken into consideration because we want the music video to be popular amongst our audience.
  • 10. What type of setting would you expect our music video to have?   • 11. ā€¢ We decided to ask the audience what kind of setting they would expect our music video to have. There were various responses including a house, a school and some participants suggested multiple settings. However all the responses to this question aided the narrative choice that was previously selected. For example as narrative one is centred around children get bullied, many people that chose this narrative suggested the ideal setting would be in a school. It was important to ask the participants what kind of setting they would prefer as the wrong setting would be a fatal error in the production of the music video and could affect its potential interest amongst viewers due to the product not being realistic which would lead to members of the audience becoming bored easily and therefore distracted. Evaluation After asking participants what props they would think would be appropriate for our music video it was clear from the responses that the props had to work in accordance with the narrative and the characters specific role. The reason behind this is to enhance the music video, making it more realistic and believable which will help to lock the audiences attention within the product. Some participants were unsure of what props should be used which indicates that props may not be as important as other aspects in the production according to the audience. Therefore we should spend less time focusing on props and more time on other aspects such as the characters appearance which was made apparent to be quite important to the audience.

  • 15. ā€¢ When participants were asked what type of effects they would expect in a music video, the most popular response were transitions. This could be because in other already existing music videos transitions are shown frequently therefore by using transitions in our video the production appears more realistic but is at a slight risk of not being unique. In addition to this transitions could be the most popular choice out of the selected effects as people who donā€™t do have any media knowledge regarding terminology may be unaware exactly what the other effects are whereas transitions are well known amongst the majority of people. ā€¢ The response that was not so popular amongst participants was a voice over which is normally used to make it obvious to the audience the plot or what is currently happening but as we are creating a music video and want to highlight the song as being the main focus having a voice over would go against this and have to interrupt the music at some point therefore it is unlikely that a voice over will be used. ā€¢ We decided to ask this question in order to confirm our initial thoughts regarding the type of effects that would be appropriate and it was important to consult members from our target audience as their preferences need to be taken into consideration because we want the music video to be popular amongst our audience.
