Critical Evaluation Question 3
By Louis Piper
Group 9
Why we made a questionnaire
We created a questionnaire so that we could learn from our
target audience whether our film was engaging and appealing to
our target audience, and whether we needed to edit our film in
order to fully engage them. We printed 10 questionnaires and
handed them out to a sample of our target audience and asked
them to review our film, evaluate it and suggest any
improvements that we may need to make in order to make their
viewing experience more enjoyable. We created the
questionnaire on Microsoft Word and then printed it off, handing
it out to our target audience. We showed our rough cut film to
the target audience and then asked them to rate our film, it’s
content and their personal reaction from viewing the film. Our
results were positive as our target audience enjoyed their viewing
experience and gave our film high ratings- the average point score
being 8.5/10 on how much they enjoyed our film. Moreover,
another question we asked was what age group do you believe
our film is aimed at and over 60% of the questionnaire feedback
agreed and believed our film was perfect for our target audience
meaning our questionnaire was very successful and effective.
The Rough Cut

encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
We uploaded our rough cut version on to YouTube so that our target audience could view the film and then review
the film telling us what they love about the film and what we need to improve on. After the questionnaire we would
take on board the improvements we received and then upload the final and finished version of our film, this would
also allow us to compare our final film to the rough cut version.
Question 1; On a scale of 1 to 10, what rating would
you give our film?
After our questionnaire participants had viewed the film we asked them to review it and evaluate how much they
enjoyed it. The first question we asked was “what rating would you give the film?” our responses to this question
were very good as our average score was; 7.6/10 proving that our film was enjoyable for our target audience and
allowed us to achieve our aim of entertaining our audience. On one of the questionnaires, we received a rating of
10/10 showing that one of target audience members really liked our film- each questionnaire was given to a sample
of our target audience. We were heavily pleased and relieved to hear that our film was enjoyed by our target
audience and that they all thought it was a good film.
Question 2; Did you understand the film’s storyline?
When we asked our audience whether they understood the film’s storyline we received a very positive reply. 100%
of our audience said that they understood our film meaning that we conveyed a clear plot and was enjoyable for our
audience to watch and wasn’t confusing for them. Our response to this information was that we believed that
having an understandable storyline would mean the audience would enjoy the film more, immerse themselves in it,
relate to the characters and plot and ultimately attract wider audiences, we additionally believed that we would
achieve our aim under the Uses and Gratifications theory of giving our audience a chance to escape from real life
and seek pleasure and relaxation from media products.
Question 3; On a scale of 0-10, how well do you think
the audio presented in the film worked? In order to make a successful and engaging film, the music has to entice the reader and combine effectively with the
content so that it sounds right and isn’t too distracting, and must obviously add to the film. Romantic Comedies use
music throughout their films in order to convey the romance and humour, subtexts, settings, emphasis on the
audiences and engage them, therefore we wanted our results to be positive and for our music to work, in order to
engage our audience and capture the conventions of a romantic comedy. Fortunately our results were very positive,
our audience gave us an average rating of 7.3/10 which meant that our audio worked well and aided the film,
however it could be improved upon in order to fully work and allow them to immerse themselves when viewing our
film.
We aimed to improve our audio anyway as we found
music that was better suited as well as missing audio so
after the rough questionnaire we planned on improving
our music and audio so that we could improve our
average rating and allow our audience to fully immerse
themselves when viewing our film.
Question 4; Do you have any
suggestions/improvements about the audio in our
film?
In order to make our film fully immersive to our audience and making viewing it to be enjoyable, we asked them in
the questionnaire what aspects of the audio needed improving and if they had any suggestions on how to improve
the audio. We of course had our own ideas on how to improve the audio in our film, however we wanted to hear
our target audience’s opinion in order to fix their improvements and make our film as enjoyable and attractive as
possible. We set a deadline for when the rough cut version had to be uploaded to YouTube, and due to the issues we
encountered during filming, we didn’t record some of the voice overs in time so there was missing audio in our film,
this was noticeable and was picked up by our audience and many commented on the distracting silences which we
planned on improving anyway and was immediately fixed for when our final film was ready to be uploaded. Another
comment we received was that voice overs were unclear, due to the rough cut having missing voice overs, after we’d
received the questionnaire results we began improving our film and seems though we were adding in missing voice
overs, we re-recorded some of the voicers so that they were much more clearer, taking our audience’s feedback on
board and ensuring their viewing experience was as enjoyable and immersive as possible. Our soundtrack for the
film and the backing music was important for the film and we were keen to hear our audience’s reviews on the
audio, after uploading the film I noticed an error where the music suddenly stopped oppose to fading out, one of
the audience members noticed this and suggested we faded the music in and out, this was a really positive reply to
our questionnaire as that was an error we were planning on fixing straight after the questionnaire results were back.
The final reply we received was that the overall volume needed to be improved, this wasn’t an issue we noticed
however it was easy to fix and meant that our film was enjoyable and immersive to our audience.
“Complete the
audio – No
Silences”
“Make some voice
overs clearer”
“Fade the music in and out, no complete, sudden stops”
“Increase the overall
volume”
Question 5; What genre do you believe our film is?
Whilst we wanted our film to be engaging and attractive for our target audience, and whilst their responses to the
questionnaires suggested that they enjoyed the film and found it engaging, we also wanted to make sure that they
could identify the correct genre. We wanted our audience to enjoy our teenage rom-com and not enjoy watching it
thinking it to be a different genre; i.e spoof (however we did include a mild spoof kiss, our film isn’t a spoof film). In
the questionnaire I gave the audience very similar options such as; “Romance” “Comedy” “Rom-Com” and “Teen
Movie” as I wanted our film to have a clear genre, and for the genre to be clear for the audience, moreover this
would allow us to identify whether the audience were enjoying our “Teen Rom-Com” or were enjoying a “Spoof
Romance film”. The results we received were very positive as the most popular answer was a Teen Movie with
Comedy and Rom-Com being close seconds.
Whilst we planned for our film to be a Rom-Com when
we began filming and gaining inspiration from other
films, we began to realise it was showing conventions of
both genres. However, with a Rom-Com being the
second most common response we believe our
questionnaire to show positive results as the genre was
clear to the audience, we capturing the conventions of
a Rom-Com and our audience were enjoying our film as
a Rom-Com and not as another genre.
Question 6; What age group do you believe our film
is aimed at?
Similar to asking about the genre, we wanted our audience to feel immersed and engaged with the film and be able
to relate to the characters, so we asked what age group they believed our film attracted. The audience for the
questionnaire were samples from our target audience so we hoped that they believe that their age group would feel
most attracted to the film. Our target audience is mid-teens to young adults so we hoped that our target audience
reviewing the film would agree, and our results from the questionnaire were positive as 64% of our audience
suggested Teens as the most suitable audience (9 out of 14).
We had other similar suggestions such as Pre-Teens and
Young Adults which we believe could fit into our target
audience meaning that our responses were very
positive as our target audience believed that they were
the best audience and that our film attracted their age
group the most.
Question 7; What certificate do you believe our film
is?Another important question was whether our target audience agreed with the certificate that our short film best suited. We
didn’t want our audience to feel like the content in our film was too inappropriate for the certificate we had already allocated
and we didn’t want our certificate to be too high for our audience, so we were keen to see an our audience’s perspective on our
content. The results were tied between a “U” certificate and a “12/12a” certificate which is ironic as we had judged our film to be
a PG. We looked into a U certificate however we believe the passionate kiss which Isaac dreams about could have connotations
making it inappropriate for a U certificate but not too strong for a 12/12a so we instead gave it a PG rating which we believed
best suited our film. In addition to this, the first certificate we felt our film was rated at was a 12/12a as we had more ideas for
kissing scenes and a less subliminal gay character, however after toning the kiss down and making Luke’s sexuality more
subliminal we changed the certificate.
We believe, however, that our results were still positive as the
audience suggested our previous certificate (and hadn’t
researched into the BBFC guidelines) and also suggested a
certificate that we also agreed our film could pass for. We did
receive an anomaly in a 15 suggested certificate however
when the audience member explained that they suggested 15
because the film was aimed at 15 year olds (teens) and often
a gay character wouldn’t be seen clearly in a U film.
Question 8; On a scale of 0-10, how much did you
enjoy viewing our film?
With our project aims stemming from the Uses and
Gratifications theory, having our audience enjoy viewing
our film was of paramount importance as we wanted
them to immerse themselves when viewing the film and
be able to seek pleasure from viewing, ignoring real life
stresses and pressure. We asked our audience to vote
from 0-10 on how much they enjoyed viewing our film
and we felt that our responses were very positive; with
an average score of 9.1 out of 10. We always planned to
improve our film so that it was fully enjoyable for our
audience and allows them to relax and release all their
worries and pressures, so we happily surprised when we
discovered that our target audience found our their
viewing experience of our rough cut so enjoyable. This
additionally meant that our target audience were
hopefully going to enjoy our final film even more and
allow us to fully achieve our aim of allowing our
audience to immerse themselves and forget all about
the pressures and stress from real life. What made our
results even more positive was that the most popular
rating was a 10! (10 being 40% whilst 8 and 9 being 30%)
meaning that some members fully immersed in our rough
cut and would definitely watch it again; and therefore the
final film would hopefully attract them even more.
Question 9; Can you suggest any improvements for
our film?
Whilst our results for our film and how much our audience enjoyed viewing the rough cut, we still knew that
there were improvements in order to make our film as engaging and immersive as possible. We had our own
ideas on what needed improving in order to make the film more enjoyable for our audience, however we
additionally wanted to see if the audience felt anything needed changing, their opinions and suggestions were
important for us as the members of the questionnaire we a sample from our target audience. When we
uploaded our rough cut we were aware of certain improvements required; one of the suggested improvements
was that our film needed to flow better, we believed the lack of flow might have been affected by the missing
scenes so we finished filming any missing scenes and scenes that needed improving as well as editing the film
to give a much quicker pace. We believed this added to the flow and gave our film more of a narrative which
would result in our audience enjoying our film more and more likely to be able to relax and feel engaged when
viewing the film. A lot of our suggested improvements were more to do with the audio, oppose to the visuals,
we saw this as a positive as the audio is easier to fix oppose to visuals (as that would require re-filming). One
member suggested that the sound effects needed improving and that the voices needed to be clear, we then
searched on royalty free websites to find the perfect sound effects that would improve the film and the film’s
humour so that viewing the film was more enjoyable, furthermore, we either re-recorded speech on
microphones to give the audio more volume and resolution, or re-shot the scene if the voices were too hard to
match-up. We believe that our audience’s suggestions definitely improved our product and meant that the
final version would allow them to immerse themselves when viewing as we took all of their improvements on
board, as well as ones we recognised ourselves, in order to allow our audience to immerse themselves when
watching the film, and achieve our aim of giving our audience pleasure and relaxation when viewing our film.
“Make it flow
better”
“Improve
sound effects
and make
voices clearer”

Reviewing our final film
Despite our film being finished and exported to YouTube, there are still aspects of it which we would improve such
as the audio and the some of the shots in order to improve the visuals, furthermore, after receiving our results back
from our final questionnaire some audience members suggested improvements we could have made. Some
improvements that were suggested were that some of the sound effects didn’t work in certain scenes, and other
scenes could have done with a sound effect. If we were to re-edit our film I would definitely fix any sound effects
that I wasn’t completely sure on as I’d want my whole target audience to enjoy viewing our film and not feel
distracted by any out of place sound effects. Another suggestion we received regarding audio, which I too noticed
and would plan on improving was, the ambient sound present from the settings where we filmed, whilst this
arguably could be beneficial in order to make the film seem more realistic and evidence the setting, it instead
became too distracting and some of our audience members stated that they would have given our audio a higher
mark if it weren’t for the background noise. If I could edit the film I would definitely plan on removing all
background noise from the setting to avoid distracting our audience, I would either use a microphone to record any
dialogue, or re-shoot the scenes but at a time where the set was quieter. I would also want to re-shoot some shots
and scenes in order to shoot different and new angles, allowing us to engage our audience more and to show off our
skills in cinematography, I also believe this would make our film more exciting. Despite all of this, I am very happy
with our final product which was heavily improved from our rough cut and attracted our target audience. I believe
we captured the conventions of a romantic comedy/teen movie and created a successful teenage rom-com short
film, as well as achieving our aims, inspired by the Uses and Gratifications theory. I believe we achieved our aims of
engaging our audience and allowing them to immerse themselves and gain pleasure and release from real life
stresses.
